Pep Guardiola said Friday he would like to "stay longer" amid speculation at least one of the candidates to be the next president of Barcelona would like to bring the celebrated manager back to the Nou Camp.

Guardiola is in the final year of his contract with City, a situation that had already led to plenty of debate about his future, before Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font suggested he could return to the Catalan club, where his trophy haul included a pair of Champions League titles.

But when those comments were put to him during a Friday news conference, Guardiola replied: "I am incredibly happy here. I'm delighted to be in Manchester and I hope I can do a good job this season to stay longer."

Although Guardiola has won two Premier League titles since joining City from German giants Bayern Munich in 2016, European glory has proved elusive during his time at the Etihad.

Injuries have disrupted City's start to this season, with Guardiola's men in a lowly 13th place in the English top flight ahead of their match away to Sheffield United on Saturday.

Guardiola said City's plight had been made worse by a shortened pre-season break and a fixture programme compressed by the demands of the coronavirus pandemic.

And that led him to argue the Premier League should revert to allowing five substitutes, as happened during the closing stages of last season after lockdown.

"Definitely they should, they should 100 percent," he said. "It's not about one club.

"There are statistics that they don't deny -- that in the Premier League players have 47 per cent more muscular injuries than the previous season, due to no preparation for most of the teams and the amount of games.

"All the leagues -- Germany, Spain, everywhere -- (allow) five substitutions to protect the players, not to protect one team. Hopefully they can reconsider and do what the rest of the world does because we have to adjust to the pandemic situation and other things.

"The reality is completely different now to before. Intelligent people adjust to the situation in the world - football is about the players. We'll see."

Guardiola eager to extend Man City stay

Teenage defender Rayan Ait-Nouri marked his Wolves debut with a goal as the Midlands club beat Crystal Palace 2-0 at Molineux on Friday to move up into third place in the Premier League.

Victory put Wolves level on points with the leading Merseyside duo of Everton and reigning champions Liverpool ahead of the bulk of this weekend's fixtures.

France Under-21 left-back Ait-Nouri joined Wolves on a season-long loan&nbsp;-- with an option to buy -- from Ligue 1 Angers this month.

It took him just 18 minutes to open the scoring with a first-time shot.

Portuguese winger Daniel Podence doubled Wolves' lead nine minutes later, when he turned in Pedro Neto's cross from close range.

"For Rayan Ait-Nouri I am really pleased because it is the first game and what a better start can he have?" Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo told the BBC.

"He is 19 with a lot of things to improve. He has to get so many things on board and that's the work."

Wolves almost had a third goal before half-time as Nelson Semedo and Leander Dendoncker went close with long-range efforts.

"I think we were good but we should play better," added Nuno.&nbsp;

"We started well. We had a good team in front of us. At the end of the first half we slowed down our pressure and Palace had chances."

Meanwhile, Nuno said being deprived of their passionate fans, with spectators barred from grounds because of British government Covid-19 protocols, made home games tough for Wolves.

"It's all about the performance, the table is not important," he insisted.

"The work is important. Playing without fans requires a lot of focus, we haven't the edge of Molineux."

VAR denied Palace a penalty when Palace's Patrick van Aanholt was found to be offside, before being fouled by Willy Boly.

Palace's defeat was made worse when when Luka Milivojevic was sent off late on following a VAR review of his challenge on Wolves substitute Joao Moutinho.

Defeat left the south London side ninth in the table, with Palace manager Roy Hodgson unconvinced by Milivojevic's dismissal.

"I'm not disappointed with how the players played for most of the game," said Hodgson. "But I'm disappointed with that opening 20-minute spell."

The former England manager added: "I spoke to the referee about the red card. I made my views clear. I don't think it was a red card. It was a fair challenge."

At a time when some of the countries in Europe are again heading towards a lockdown due to surge in COVID-19 cases, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> clubs are pushing to allow a limited number of fans inside the stadium. Manchester United have said that they can safely host 23,500 fans at Old Trafford while maintaining social distancing measures in a bid to curb the spread of the deadly virus.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero will be out for perhaps as much as a month, coach Pep Guardiola told a press conference in Marseille on Monday.

City will be without the Argentine on Tuesday against Marseille in the Champions League.&nbsp;

Aguero, who had just returned from injury, suffered a muscle problem in the&nbsp;Premier League draw at West Ham on Saturday.&nbsp;

"We knew he wasn't in the best condition," Guardiola said. "When you are out four or five months for a knee injury you always have the risk when you come back of injuries."

"It will be 10-15 days minimum. If it is longer it will be three weeks to a month. I don't know."

Guardiola said he wants "Sergio to come back when he has fully recovered. We miss him a lot. What he has done for this club is extraordinary, he is a City legend."

Brazilian Gabriel Jesus is also absent, but Guardiola said he did not regret not recruiting a striker in the transfer window.&nbsp;

"We couldn't, the club does what it can, but we lacked income at the end of the season. And then we would need a striker of the level of Gabriel and Sergio, and we don't have the means".&nbsp;

Son Heung-min pounced to steal a 1-0 win for lacklustre Tottenham on Monday, linking up with Harry Kane yet again as Jose Mourinho's side climbed to fifth in the Premier League table.

All of the traditional "big six" clubs have dropped unlikely points in the early weeks of the season and Spurs looked set to leave Turf Moor frustrated.

But South Korea forward Son scored his eighth league goal of the season in the 76th minute, heading in from close range after a headed pass from Kane.

Spurs now have 11 points from six games, just two points behind leaders Everton after their third win of the season.

Mourinho hailed his attacking stars, who have now combined for 29 Premier League goals -- only Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard have managed more, with 36.

"It is an understanding that comes from Maurcio (Pochettino's) time," said Mourinho. "I don't want all the credit myself, let's share with Mauricio.&nbsp;

"They play together for a long time, probably a different way because Harry is not always a nine now.

"What pleases me more about them both is that they are two top players but close friends, no jealousy, they both play for the team."

<h2>- Relief -</h2>

The hard-earned three points will be a huge relief to Mourinho, whose side looked like world beaters earlier this month when they hammered Manchester United 6-1 before blowing a 3-0 lead against West Ham.

Tottenham's attacking momentum vanished at Turf Moor, where they struggled to make an impression against Sean Dyche's side, who remain in the relegation zone, without a win this season.

Kane was able to get behind Burnley's defence in the early minutes following a Toby Alderweireld ball over the top but the England striker's first touch took him too wide and his shot sailed harmlessly over.

There was a lengthy stoppage as Alderweireld needed treatment on a bloody right eyebrow after being caught inadvertently by Ashley Barnes' flailing arm. The Belgian had his head bandaged before play continued.

Slightly against the run of play, Burnley had the ball in the back of the net when Barnes seemingly sprang the offside trap and buried the ball past Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris but the flag went up.

It was not until the 38th minute that the game had its first shot on target, Ashley Westwood bringing a low save out of Lloris after Josh Brownhill had stolen the ball off Tanguy Ndombele on the edge of the area.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson then cut in from the right and forced Lloris into action once more as the home side ended the half on top.

Tottenham again struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages of the second half, with Burnley coming close to taking the lead.

James Tarkowski put a header wide from close range before Mourinho threw on Erik Lamela to replace Lucas Moura in the 57th minute, with Gareth Bale still waiting for his first Premier League start in seven years.

The match sparked into life late on, when Kane cleared another header from Tarkowski off the line.

Son failed to take advantage of a clear chance before Kane flicked on a corner to the South Korean, who dived headlong to break the deadlock and seal the win.

Premier League: Son and Kane to the rescue for lacklustre Spurs

Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti on Thursday defended goalkeeper Jordan Pickford over a reckless tackle that left Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk with a serious injury as he said that suggesting it was pre-meditated tackle was “not fair”.

The England international has been central to widespread criticism, mostly from Liverpool fans, after his challenge in last week’s Merseyside derby, which left the Dutch centre-back with knee ligament damage.

Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum said that the goalkeeper was “stupid” and made the challenge without any concern for his opponent’s welfare.

However, Ancelotti has dismissed the tack while saying that everyone at Everton is sorry about Van Dijk’s injury, which will keep him out for several months.&nbsp;

"To be clear, we are really sorry for the injury of Virgil van Dijk. Every one of us hopes he can recover soon and well," he told Everton TV.

"There was this contact with Jordan Pickford. It was mistimed contact but the fact the Premier League is so fast, it is not so difficult to arrive a little bit later."

The Everton boss said his goalkeeper's intention had been to win the ball, not to hurt Van Dijk.

"To say it was pre-meditated and this and that, in my opinion, is too much," he said. "Virgil van Dijk knows this. This is football and unfortunately, you can be injured.

Premier League: Carlo Ancelotti defends Jordan Pickford over Van Dijk tackle row

Another high-scoring Premier League weekend left the title race wide open as Liverpool suffered the devastating blow of losing Virgil Van Dijk to a knee ligament injury.

The champions also dropped two points in a contentious 2-2 Merseyside derby draw as Everton remain in top spot.

Aston Villa are the only side with a 100 percent record after Ross Barkley's late winner beat Leicester 1-0.

But Chelsea and Tottenham's title credentials were again called into question after they managed to spurn multiple-goal leads to draw 3-3 at home to Southampton and West Ham respectively.

AFP Sports looks at three talking points from the Premier League weekend.

<h2>Derby costs Liverpool dear</h2>

Liverpool had the look of champions as they bounced back from a 7-2 humiliation at Villa before the international break with a much-improved performance at Everton.

But Jurgen Klopp's men lost more than just two points as decisions went against them at Goodison Park.

Van Dijk's season is likely over as he faces surgery on the ligament damage caused by a horrible lunge from Jordan Pickford that went unpunished when Liverpool led 1-0.

The Dutch giant's presence was missed as Everton twice scored headed goals to come back and snatch a point with the help of a VAR review to rule out a stoppage time winner for Liverpool.

But the loss of Van Dijk for a prolonged period threatens to be an even bigger blow to the Reds' title defence.

<h2>Another Kepa calamity</h2>

Chelsea could have moved level on points with Liverpool&nbsp;to bolster hopes that their huge summer transfer spend will be rewarded with a title challenge.

However, Frank Lampard's men twice let the lead slip as defensive problems continue to blight the Blues.

Kepa Arrizabalaga had another afternoon to forget in goal as his howler allowed Che Adams to score Southampton's second.

The Spaniard has already lost his place to Willy Caballero and Edouard Mendy this season, but returned due to an injury suffered by Mendy on international duty.

Mendy is clearly Lampard's long-term solution, but he has to also find a way to make Chelsea a better defensive unit in general.

Kepa was not in goal when they conceded three times to West Brom last month and Chelsea have now lost 63 goals in 43 league games under the former England midfielder.

<h2>Bad defending breeds better entertainment</h2>

Chelsea are far from alone when it comes to having a poor defensive record.

Barkley's late strike ensured there have still been no goalless draws and a quarter of the 48 Premier League games so far have featured six or more goals.

Tottenham have contributed to three of those as the combination of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min again shone in a 3-3 draw with West Ham.

Kane and Son have combined for 18 goals already this season, but Spurs could not even see out a three-goal lead with just eight minutes remaining.

Manuel Lanzini's sensational 94th-minute strike snatched a point for David Moyes's men but the former Manchester United manager is keen to see a return to some decent defending to go along with the drama.

"I can't work out if it is the quality of the forwards. I look it and see a lack of good defending," said Moyes.

"Games are played very one end and the other end. It is exciting, but I think if you are a purist you like to see good defending too."

Another high-scoring Premier League weekend left the title race wide open as Liverpool suffered the devastating blow of losing Virgil Van Dijk to a knee ligament injury.

Derby costs Liverpool dear Liverpool had the look of champions as they bounced back from a 7-2 humiliation at Villa before the international break with a much-improved performance at Everton. Another Kepa calamity Chelsea could have moved level on points with Liverpool to bolster hopes that their huge summer transfer spend will be rewarded with a title challenge. Bad defending breeds better entertainment Chelsea are far from alone when it comes to having a poor defensive record. Barkley's late strike ensured there have still been no goalless draws and a quarter of the 48 Premier League games so far have featured six or more goals. Tottenham have contributed to three of those as the combination of Harry Kane and Son Heung-min again shone in a 3-3 draw with West Ham. Three talking points from the Premier League

West Ham ruined Gareth Bale's Tottenham return with a stunning late fightback from three goals down to rescue a thrilling 3-3 draw, while Aston Villa extended their perfect start with a dramatic 1-0 win at Leicester on Sunday.

Tottenham were leading 3-0 when Bale came on as a 72nd minute substitute for his first appearance since joining on a season-long loan from Real Madrid.

But he suffered a debut to forget as Tottenham capitulated in astonishing fashion.

The Wales star was one of the main Tottenham culprits as he missed a golden opportunity to wrap up the points before West Ham's Manuel Lanzini snatched a stoppage-time equaliser.

Tottenham took the lead with just 45 seconds gone when Son Heung-min and Harry Kane combined to create a goal for the seventh time this season.

Kane was the catalyst, dropping deep into midfield before unfurling a majestic long pass that found Son, who cut into the West Ham area and curled his shot into the far corner.

It was Kane's turn to get on the scoresheet in the eighth minute as he nutmegged Declan Rice and fired into the bottom corner from the edge of the area.

Tottenham's sizzling start featured a third goal in the 16th minute, with England captain Kane heading in from Sergio Reguilon's pin-point cross for his 10th goal of the season.

Back at Tottenham seven years after leaving for Real in a then world record deal, Bale hopes to prove he is still a world-class talent despite a long spell out of favour with Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane.

But it was West Ham who were the dominant force after Bale's introduction to replace Steven Bergwijn.

Fabian Balbuena nodded in from Aaron Cresswell's cross after 82 minutes and Davinson Sanchez's headed own goal from Vladimir Coufal's delivery three minutes later left Tottenham panicking.

Bale should have scored in stoppage-time, but he shot wide after bursting into the area and Lanzini made him pay with a brilliant 25-yard blast into the top corner.

West Ham are the first team in Premier League history to avoid defeat in a game having trailed by three or more goals as late as the 81st minute.

"The game was under control. We had Harry Kane to score the fourth when he hit the post, then Gareth Bale to kill the game. This is a game that was in the pocket and we lost two points," Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho said.

"We should be stronger. They were lucky but maybe they deserved that luck. We were unlucky but maybe we deserved that."

At the King Power Stadium, Villa left it until the 90th minute to seal their fourth successive victory.

Ross Barkley, on loan from Chelsea, took John McGinn's pass and fired home from the edge of the area.

Just months after avoiding relegation on the final day of last season, Villa move up to second place.

They thrashed champions Liverpool 7-2 before the international break and now sit three points behind leaders Everton.

Villa have won their opening four games of a league season for the first time since 1930-31 and boss Dean Smith said: "It is a really good start. To come here and get the win, this is a really good team.

"There are a lot of tired legs but they are getting into the season slowly but surely. We will savour what we are doing at the moment."

<h2>- Mitrovic misery -</h2>

At Bramall Lane, Fulham's Aleksandar Mitrovic endured a penalty nightmare in a 1-1 draw with Sheffield United.

Mitrovic fired over with his second half penalty after Jack Robinson handled.

Ademola Lookman put Fulham ahead in the 77th minute with a superb solo effort.

But Serbia international Mitrovic was penalised for a high foot on Robinson in the 85th minute and Billy Sharp made him pay as he drove his penalty down the middle.

Alexis Mac Allister netted his first Premier League goal in the 90th minute to give Brighton a 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace.

Spurs rocked on Bale's return, Villa extend perfect start

After suffering a potential season-ending blow to Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool are now sweating on the fitness of Joel Matip after the Reds defender was spotted near Liverpool’s local hospital after the Merseyside Derby against Everton.

While Van Dijk has suffered a massive injury, which could ultimately rule out of the remainder of Premier League 2020-21 season, Matip is said to have picked up a minor knock.&nbsp;

Notably, Van Dijk is out for several months as he will require surgery on the ACL injury he suffered in the derby against Everton. Whereas, Matip underwent a scan with no major issue detected.&nbsp;

With not many centre backs available fully fit, manager Jurgen Klopp must decide whether to risk Matip against Ajax in their UEFA Champions League clash. If Matip misses out, then Fabinho is likely to drop to centre-back alongside Joe Gomez. Or else, Liverpool could look to youngsters Nathaniel Phillips, Rhys Williams, Sepp van den Berg and Billy Koumetio, who have all been in and around Liverpool’s first team set-up.

"I personally think it will be Fabinho who slots in there," the former Reds full-back Glen Johnson told The Mirror.

"Teams will show a team like Liverpool respect, so they won't be pressing all the time from the front.

"You need players at the back who can set the game up, and I think Fabinho can certainly do that, because obviously he's very good on the ball and used to playing in midfield.

After Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool sweat over Joel Matip's fitness

Bruno Fernandes atoned for a missed penalty as Manchester United blitzed Newcastle with late goals on Saturday while VAR denied Liverpool a cathartic victory against Everton on another day of breathless drama in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Chelsea conceded late to draw 3-3 at home to Southampton while Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola got the better of former assistant Mikel Arteta in a 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men went into their match at St James's Park desperate to restore pride after a 6-1 hammering by Spurs before the international break but were immediately in trouble when Luke Shaw turned the ball into his own net.

United were back on level terms midway through the first half when captain Harry Maguire met Juan Mata's corner with an unstoppable header, just days after the misery of a red card for England against Denmark.

The visitors were handed a golden chance to take the lead from the spot after VAR awarded them a penalty for Jamal Lewis's challenge on Marcus Rashford but Karl Darlow dived to his right to save Fernandes's 58th-minute spot-kick.

However, the Portuguese made amends for his miss with a superb 86th-minute strike and there was still time for goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Rashford, who made it 4-1.

"Great result and great character to come back, led by a very inspirational captain," Solskjaer told Sky Sports.

"Harry scored and leads by example," he added. "He showed good character, I am happy for him. He had a couple of difficult weeks since he last played for us.

"The season started for us today. We have come up to the speed of the game and that showed today."

<h2>- VAR agony -</h2>

Jurgen Klopp's champions were desperate to re-establish their authority after their 7-2 mauling against Aston Villa but were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw after Jordan Henderson's late strike was chalked off for offside.

Everton, who have not beaten Liverpool since 2010, remain three points clear of their Merseyside rivals at the top of the table after a number of controversial calls went their way at Goodison Park.

Klopp was mystified that Henderson's potential winner in added time against 10-man Everton was ruled out for a barely perceptible offside decision against Sadio Mane.

He was also at a loss to explain how Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford had not been dismissed and had not conceded an early penalty for a knee-high challenge on Virgil van Dijk.

Klopp said: "We lost one player in a situation where VAR was not involved with Virgil and maybe another one (Thiago Alcantara) in the red card situation and scored a legitimate goal which didn't count -- so obviously not our day but the performance was the performance I wanted to see."

Everton showed their new-found mettle by twice coming from behind, with Michael Keane and the prolific Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelling out goals from Mane and Mohamed Salah.

But the pivotal moment in the match came when Van Dijk was on the receiving end of a dangerous late lunge from Pickford early in the game, which forced the Dutchman off.

However, no penalty was awarded after a VAR review because Van Dijk had been marginally offside and Pickford was lucky to avoid a red card.

Richarlison was shown a straight red card for a dangerous tackle on Thiago in the 90th minute before the VAR drama in the final seconds.

Van Dijk and Thiago both went to hospital for scans on their knee injuries after the game.

<h2>- Werner double -</h2>

&nbsp;

Chelsea looked to be in total control after cruising into a 2-0 lead against Southampton at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of new signing Timo Werner's first Premier League goals.

But a goal from Danny Ings shortly before half-time and a second-half strike from Che Adams wiped out their lead.

Frank Lampard's side rallied immediately to regain the lead, Werner teeing up Kai Havertz, only for Jannik Vestergaard to power home an added-time equaliser.

City returned to winning ways after an indifferent start to the season, courtesy of a first-half goal from Raheem Sterling, who condemned Arsenal to their seventh straight defeat in league matches between the two sides.

Late blitz saves Man Utd blushes as VAR denies Liverpool

Liverpool's Premier League title defence was rocked on Sunday with the news Virgil Van Dijk must undergo knee surgery amid reports the Dutch defender could miss the rest of the season.

Van Dijk hobbled off after a shocking challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in a 2-2 draw in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.

"The centre-back damaged knee ligaments following an incident involving Blues goalkeeper Jordan Pickford after six minutes at Goodison Park," Liverpool said in a statement.

"Van Dijk was required to be substituted and further assessment on the injury has revealed an operation will be needed.

"No specific timescale is being placed upon his return to action at this stage."

Van Dijk has been pivotal to Liverpool's resurgence under Jurgen Klopp since making a then world record £75 million move for a defender from Southampton in January 2018.

The 29-year-old has started every league game for the past two seasons as the Reds won the Champions League in 2019 and ended a 30-year wait to win a league title earlier this year.

"Virgil played for us I don't know how many games in a row. He plays with pain, he plays with pretty much everything, but he couldn't play on. That's not good," said Klopp.

Prior to Van Dijk's arrival, Klopp's time at Anfield had been beset by defensive collapses.

Now the German must find a solution to the huge hole left in his defence without the chance to dip into the transfer market with the window not open again until January.

There are parallels with the serious knee injury that Manchester City centre-back Aymeric Laporte suffered at the start of last season.

Without the Frenchman, City's title defence imploded paving the way for Liverpool to cruise to the league by 18 points.

Van Dijk's absence is compounded by goalkeeper Alisson Becker also being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

Without the Brazilian in goal, Klopp's men have conceded nine times in their last two matches, including a historic 7-2 humiliation as Aston Villa two weeks ago.

The loss of Van Dijk's dominant aerial presence was obvious as Everton scored twice from headers to come from behind in a contentious derby at Goodison Park.

England international Pickford somehow escaped punishment for his dangerous lunge into Van Dijk's knee as the two collided at the back post.

Liverpool have reportedly asked the Premier League for clarification on the use of VAR as not only was Pickford not dismissed, but Jordan Henderson's late winner was ruled out for a dubious offside against Sadio Mane on review.

Klopp was also not happy with another reckless Everton challenge that earned Richarlison a straight red card for taking out Thiago Alcantara.

The Spanish international was able to complete the game, but has also been sent for scans to discover the extent of a knee injury.

"When I left the pitch, Thiago told me in the red card situation with Richarlison he thinks he got injured," Klopp added.&nbsp;

"We will see if it's true or not, but if he felt like this then we need to have a look."

Liverpool confirm knee ligament damage for Van Dijk amid fears season is over

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero on Saturday came into the spotlight not due to his goal-scoring prowess but for his behavior on the field as he was heavily criticized on social media for putting his arm on the shoulder of female assistant referee Sian Massey-Ellis during Man City’s 1-0 win over Arsenal.

Aguero argued with Massey on the sidelines over a throw-in call which went against him early in the second of the Premier League encounter at the Etihad Stadium. After disputing the throw-in call, Aguero briefly put his arm around the female assistant referee’s shoulder as she began to walk away.

While it was Aguero’s first match since June after the knee surgery, the Argentine found himself as the focal topic on social media with his former team-mate Micah Richards saying on Sky Sports that Aguero should “know better”. Many bashed Aguero while some defended him saying that it is the nature of the game and the Argentine didn't have any ill-intention behind it.

Jurgen Klopp says football can help bring people together in tough times as Liverpool gear up to face Everton on Saturday in a city placed under tough coronavirus rules.

Klopp's champions travel to face Carlo Ancelotti's Premier League leaders for a second Merseyside derby behind closed doors in four months.

Liverpool has been placed under the "very high" alert level of the British government's new three-tier system to check the spread of Covid-19.

Under the strict rules many pubs and bars are closed and people are not allowed to socialise with anybody beyond those they live with.

The Liverpool squad itself has been hit in recent weeks, with Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara testing positive.

"I like to think that here football is always a massive point in this city," said Klopp. "I think months ago we discussed 'is football really necessary, does football play a role in society?'

"Obviously from a subjective point of view I was pretty sure it does.

"Usually when bad things happen, this city comes really together and tries to make the best of it. That is what we try from a football point of view for sure.&nbsp;

"I think if we played Man City now on the weekend it would have the same importance, it's just football is an important thing.

"It's just now because we are both clubs from the city, the whole city is united and will watch one football game, not two."

Klopp hopes derby unites virus-hit Liverpool

Gareth Bale is expected to make his second Tottenham debut against West Ham on Sunday, but Jose Mourinho claims even the Welsh star's place is not guaranteed as he revels in the squad depth at his disposal.

Bale has returned to north London on a season-long loan from Real Madrid after seven years of highs and lows since joining the Spanish giants for a then world-record fee.

He scored in two Champions League finals as Madrid won the competition four times in his first five seasons.

But Bale's performances also attracted plenty of criticism, while he struggled with injuries and the adaptation to life in Spain.

Injury has also delayed his Tottenham return on the field, but the familiar surroundings have made the 31-year-old more relaxed after his Madrid misery and he has been pictured in the stands supporting his new team-mates.

Mourinho said on Friday that Sergio Reguilon, who also moved from Madrid to Spurs last month, commented that Bale looks a "different guy" from the shy figure in the Spanish capital.

But questions remain over whether he can emulate the success of his first spell with Tottenham, when he developed into one of the world's best.

In the final season before his big move, Bale scored 26 goals but it still was not enough to secure a place in the Champions League as Andre Villas-Boas's side finished fifth.

During his time in Spain, Spurs became Champions League regulars, reaching the final for the first time in 2019.

This season is the first in five years Tottenham are not in Europe's top club competition, but a Champions League return is the least they expect after bringing back Bale to form a potentially thrilling front three alongside Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Kane and Son have combined spectacularly to thrash Manchester United 6-1 and Southampton 5-2 already this season.

Injuries to both hampered Spurs' chances of making the top four last season, but Mourinho is confident he now has the squad to challenge on multiple fronts.

&nbsp;

<h2>- Winning mentality -</h2>

&nbsp;

Despite the club's rise in recent years, Tottenham have still not won a trophy since 2008.

"We have a squad where every player has to fight a lot and play very well to deserve a place in the team," said Mourinho.

"The squad is so good, so strong. We have so many options that I refuse to say this player is a first choice.

"I can feel even in the players this feeling I love. They are happy but they are worried.&nbsp;

"They are happy that the squad is good, that people are coming to make the squad better. But at the same time they are worried about themselves, 'am I going to play or not going to play?' This is the kind of feeling you have in the top teams and we are having that now."

Bale has plenty of experience of those demands from his time at Madrid, which is regarded as bittersweet at best despite winning 13 trophies.

"By going to Madrid, winning trophies and going far with the national team I feel like I have that winning mentality of how to win trophies," Bale said on his return.

"You don't realise it until you're there and in those situations in finals, knowing how to deal with the situation, the nerves, the pressure.

"That all goes with experience, so hopefully I can bring that to the dressing room, bring a bit more belief to everybody that we can win a trophy.

"The target is to do that this season. Not to just win one but to be fighting on every front possible."

Bale return adds stardust as Mourinho targets trophies for Spurs

Premier League clubs on Wednesday rejected plans put forward by Liverpool and Manchester United for radical changes to the league’s structures and finances and said they would conduct their own review of the game.

The “Project Big Picture” proposals would have seen an increase in funds for the 72 clubs in the Football League (EFL) but also include special voting rights for the biggest clubs in the Premier League and a reduction of teams in the top flight from 20 to 18.

The plan has been fronted by EFL chairman Rick Parry and would have included a 250 million-pound ($325.85 million) bail-out for his clubs, who face acute financial issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But at a meeting on Wednesday of all 20 Premier League clubs, the plans were rejected with a separate, broader-based review by the entire league initiated and a more limited bail-out for lower division clubs.

“All 20 Premier League clubs today unanimously agreed that Project Big Picture will not be endorsed or pursued by the Premier League, or The FA,” the league said in a statement.

“Further, Premier League Shareholders agreed to work together as a 20-club collective on a strategic plan for the future structures and financing of English football, consulting with all stakeholders to ensure a vibrant, competitive and sustainable football pyramid.”

The process will include the FA, the UK government and the EFL, added the statement.

<h2>RESCUE PACKAGE</h2>

The Premier League also said it had agreed to offer a rescue package to League One and League Two (third and fourth tier) clubs.

“This offer will consist of grants and interest-free loans totalling a further 50 million pounds on top of the £27.2m solidarity payments already advanced to League One and League Two this year, making a total of 77.2 million pounds,” the statement said.

“Discussions will also continue with the EFL regarding Championship clubs’ financial needs. This addresses Government concerns about lower league clubs’ financial fragility.”

The UK government’s Culture Minister Oliver Dowden, who is responsible for sport, has been urging the wealthier clubs to help out the lower league teams and said the offer was a “good start”.

“I urge them to work together and stay focused on helping clubs through the crisis,” he said.

Despite the huge attention focused on the proposals, which were leaked on Sunday, neither of the two American owners, Liverpool’s John W Henry or Manchester United’s Joel Glazer, took part in the online meeting, leaving their executives to represent them.

Premier League CEO Richard Masters said the meeting had been “candid, constructive, positive in the end”.

Although FA chairman Greg Clarke said on Tuesday that the Project instigators had talked about a possible breakaway from the Premier League, Masters said he had heard no such threats.

“I don’t think anybody has been talking about breaking away. So I want to make that clear,” he said.

Feelings have been running high among owners and officials from the Premier League’s smaller clubs, some of whom believe the top teams tried to railroad them.

“Whilst there has been a lot of things said and done, a lot of speculation over the last four days, I don’t think it’s irreparably damaged the Premier League,” Masters said.

The EFL, whose clubs had been largely in support of Project Big Picture given the promise of increased funds including a 250 million-pound rescue fund said it would meet with all its 72 clubs on Thursday to discuss the new bail-out offer.

“As we have maintained across the past 72 hours, there is a significant issue facing the English footballing Pyramid and therefore it is encouraging that there is an acknowledgment that a review of the current status quo is required,” the EFL said in a statement.

“The EFL welcomes the opportunity to contribute to any wider debate with colleagues across the game as we seek to finally address impossible economic pressures and deliver on the objective of having a sustainable EFL in the long-term.”

Premier League clubs reject 'Project Big Picture'

Liverpool face Premier League pacesetters Everton this weekend determined to prove their 7-2 drubbing by Aston Villa was just a bizarre blip while misfiring Manchester United could slip into the relegation zone.

The Merseyside derby kicks off the Premier League action on Saturday after the international break, with Manchester City's match against Arsenal also catching the eye.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be desperate to turn around Manchester United's fortunes at Newcastle after their 6-1 humbling by Tottenham.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of the action.

&nbsp;

<h2>Can Everton end Liverpool hoodoo?</h2>

Everton have been rivals to Liverpool in name only for the past decade, without a win against their near-neighbours since 2010.

But the Goodison Park club are top of the table with four wins out of four and Jurgen Klopp will not be relishing the short trip across Stanley Park.

The champions are smarting from their pummelling at Villa, which followed impressive wins against Chelsea and Arsenal, and it will be the defence that is giving the German boss his biggest headache.

Liverpool have conceded 11 goals in the Premier League so far -- only West Brom have conceded more (13) -- and they are coming up against the Premier League's joint top-scorer in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has six goals.

The forward, who scored for England on his debut last week, is quick to praise fellow attackers James Rodriguez and Richarlison.

"I demand high standards from myself every day," he told Everton TV. "I continue to work hard, like I always have, to get into this position. I am just grateful the quality behind me is producing the opportunities for me to score the goals."

&nbsp;

<h2>Man Utd must stop rot</h2>

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described his side's 6-1 defeat at home to Tottenham as the "worst day" in his career as a Manchester United player or manager.

United are just three points above the relegation zone after shipping 11 goals in their three matches so far and their confidence looks to be in tatters.

The question until recently was who would partner Harry Maguire at the back but the world's most expensive defender is himself enduring a horror season on and off the pitch.

The central defender's latest low point was his red card during England's 1-0 defeat to Denmark in the Nations League on Wednesday.

Left-back Luke Shaw, whose place is under threat from the arrival of Alex Telles, urged United to tighten up.

"We need to be clinical and, especially at the back, we need to be more solid," Shaw said. "Not just as a backline but throughout the whole team, a bit more defensively solid and a bit more compact."

&nbsp;

<h2>Spurs' feelgood factor</h2>

Jose Mourinho's Tottenham started the season with a disappointing Premier League defeat against Everton but they are unbeaten since then despite a hectic schedule leading up to the international break.

Their seismic victory at Old Trafford brought an end to a sequence of eight matches in 22 days as Spurs reached the League Cup quarter-finals and qualified for the Europa League group stage.

Lucas Moura says Tottenham are keen to pick up where they left off.

"We need to start the new month in the same way, with the same fighting spirit," he said. "I'm very positive. I think we are building a very strong squad and we can dream of big things this season, that's our objective."

&nbsp;

<h2>Villa meet Leicester in summit clash</h2>

When Aston Villa escaped relegation on the final day of the 2019/20 season, few would have expected them to be second in the table, with three wins out of three, in mid-October.

Defender Ezri Konsa is confident they can maintain that flying start against Leicester, who are just behind Villa on goal difference.

"It's been a great start for us," he said. "We've carried on our form from last season, and we need to keep going and keep the focus on ourselves.

"The chemistry in the squad has gone up another level and we keep building on that in training."

"I continue to work hard, like I always have, to get into this position. I am just grateful the quality behind me is producing the opportunities for me to score the goals." Man Utd must stop rot Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described his side's 6-1 defeat at home to Tottenham as the "worst day" in his career as a Manchester United player or manager. "Not just as a backline but throughout the whole team, a bit more defensively solid and a bit more compact." Spurs' feelgood factor Jose Mourinho's Tottenham started the season with a disappointing Premier League defeat against Everton but they are unbeaten since then despite a hectic schedule leading up to the international break. I think we are building a very strong squad and we can dream of big things this season, that's our objective." Villa meet Leicester in summit clash When Aston Villa escaped relegation on the final day of the 2019/20 season, few would have expected them to be second in the table, with three wins out of three, in mid-October. Defender Ezri Konsa is confident they can maintain that flying start against Leicester, who are just behind Villa on goal difference. "It's been a great start for us," he said. "We've carried on our form from last season, and we need to keep going and keep the focus on ourselves. "The chemistry in the squad has gone up another level and we keep building on that in training." Liverpool face Everton threat as Man Utd bid to stop the rot

With defender Harry Maguire going through a tough patch on the field, Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels the England international will “bounce” back after a torrid start to the season but could be out of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> match against Newcastle United due to injury.

Maguire – the world’s most expensive defender, has struggled in the 2020-21 season since the Greek court case in August. The 27-year-old was handed a suspended 21-month sentence for many charges including assaulting a police officer.
On Wednesday, Maguire was sent off during England’s 1-0 defeat to Denmark in the Nations League as his poor run of form continued.&nbsp;

"When Harry is part of the England team that beats number-one ranked Belgium, that's just a normal day and then you get the headlines when you get the sending-off," said Solskjaer.

"Harry's got great resilience. I know he'll bounce back. I'll know that he wants to play, he wants to just work his way out of the last couple of games that he's been criticised for."

Solskjaer further said that Maguire picked up a niggle against Denmark and would undergo a fitness test on Friday. Before the internationals break, Manchester United were thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham Hotspur.&nbsp;

"It's one of those things that you have to get over as soon as you can and move on," Solskjaer said. "We know any little chance from outside... you want to create a division.

"I think Bruno (Fernandes) spoke really well the other day about how we are united, we have to stay together. We can't listen to everyone outside. We've got to just get on with it."

Harry Maguire will 'bounce back' after torrid start but could miss Newcastle United match: Solskjaer

New proposals backed by Liverpool and Manchester United for wide-ranging reform of English football have been criticised by the UK government, Premier League and fans' groups.

The so-called "Project Big Picture" has been labelled a "power grab" by the Premier League's biggest and wealthiest clubs, taking advantage of the dire financial position of the English Football League (EFL) -- which comprises the three divisions directly beneath the top flight -- amid the coronavirus crisis.

But many in the EFL, including chairman Rick Parry, back the plan as a means of addressing the imbalance in resources between the top and bottom of the football pyramid.

AFP Sport looks at what "Project Big Picture" proposes and who could gain from it:

<h2>Competition reform</h2>

The principal difference on the field would be the reduction of the Premier League from 20 to 18 teams with the overall number of clubs in the top four English divisions shrinking from 92 to 90.

Only two teams would be automatically promoted to and relegated from the Premier League with third-bottom in the top tier joining third, fourth and fifth in the second-tier Championship for the traditional end-of-season play-offs.

The League Cup and season curtain-raiser, the Community Shield, would also be scrapped, providing more space in the calendar for lucrative pre-season tours and potentially more matches in European club competition for the biggest clubs.

<h2>Revenue sharing</h2>

The Premier League would provide an instant £250 million ($325 million) cash injection to the EFL to prevent clubs going bust at a time when they are without match-day revenue due to coronavirus restrictions.

A further £100 million would be provided to the English Football Association, which also has mounting coronavirus costs due to international games behind closed doors, notably to help women's football. &nbsp;

There is also more funding for the lower leagues in the long-term. In future, Premier League and EFL broadcast rights would be sold together and 25 percent distributed down the divisions.

<h2>What's the catch?</h2>

The principal objection to the plans is that the power will be concentrated in the hands of the "big six" - United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.

At the moment, a majority of 14 from the 20 Premier League clubs is required for any significant decisions to be passed with each club having one vote.

Under the proposals, the "big six" and the other three longest-serving Premier League members - currently Everton, Southampton and West Ham United - would hold the balance of power with only six of those nine needed to vote in major rule changes.

That would include the power to approve or block takeovers of other clubs, for example the Saudi-backed deal for Newcastle United that recently fell through.

Moreover, each club could sell the rights of up to eight live matches a season direct to fans over their own channels. That would be far more lucrative for the bigger clubs with huge worldwide fanbases, but is likely to reduce collective TV deals, where the EFL's 25 percent share comes from.

Parachute payments for clubs relegated from the Premier League would also be abolished.

<h2>Who is backing it?</h2>

Parry, formerly the Liverpool chief executive, has been the most vocal senior figure supporting the plan after months of warning that EFL clubs face a £200 million black hole in their finances with games being held behind closed doors.

Despite being behind the proposals, Liverpool and United are yet to comment publicly. However, the plans have received considerable support from clubs throughout the EFL.

<h2>Who is against it?</h2>

A powerful alliance of the Premier League, government and supporters groups has warned about selling control over the game to a small band of clubs.

The Football Supporters Association described the plans on Tuesday as a "sugar-coated cyanide pill offered up by billionaire owners who do not understand or care about our football culture".

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the project was the "type of backroom dealing that undermines trust in football governance", while the Premier League warned some of the plans would have a "damaging impact on the whole game."

<h2>What comes next?</h2>

Even in the unlikely event that a majority of Premier League clubs backed the plans, they would not come into force until 2022/23.

However, with such strong opposition, these proposals are likely to just be the starting point for negotiations on how to balance the interests of the biggest clubs with protecting the football pyramid.

The most pressing need is that for a bailout of the EFL -- The chairman of fourth-tier London club Leyton Orient, Nigel Travis, has claimed some clubs will disappear within six weeks without financial support.

What is English football's 'Project Big Picture' and who stands to benefit?

Premier League chiefs have called for unity after leading clubs discussed a "damaging" overhaul that would trigger the most radical changes to English football in decades.

A Daily Telegraph report on Sunday claimed Liverpool and Manchester United have been driving the 'Project Big Picture' talks, which would rank as the biggest revamp of the sport since the Premier League was launched in 1992.

Among the proposals being considered are a reduction in the Premier League from 20 to 18 teams, the abolition of the League Cup and the Community Shield and greater voting power for 'big six' clubs Liverpool, United, Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.

In return for agreeing to those controversial ideas, the Premier League would reportedly give 25 per cent of its annual income to the 72 clubs in the Championship, League One and League Two.

It was suggested the Premier League would make a £250 million ($326 million) payment to the Football League to address the existing crisis, while the Football Association would receive what is being described as a £100 million "gift".

Liverpool's American owners, the Fenway Sports Group, came forward with the initial plan, which has been worked on by United co-chairman Joel Glazer, according to the report.

There will be huge debate over the proposals, which have come in response to the Football League's request for financial aid to stave off the damaging economic impact of the coronavirus.

Football in England has been played behind closed doors since March because of the pandemic, with no sign of fans returning to stadiums until next year at the earliest.

English Football League chairman Rick Parry said the plans should be welcomed, telling the Telegraph: "It is definitely going to be challenging and it is an enormous change so that won't be without some pain.

"Do I genuinely think it's for the greater good of the game as a whole? Absolutely.

"And if the (big) six are deriving some benefit then why shouldn't they. Why wouldn't they put their names to this otherwise?"

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Damaging impact' -</h2>

&nbsp;

But the Premier League hit back at Parry and distanced themselves from the incendiary scheme.

"English football is the world's most watched, and has a vibrant, dynamic and competitive league structure that drives interest around the globe," a Premier League statement said.&nbsp;

"To maintain this position it is important we all work together.&nbsp;

"Both the Premier League and The FA support a wide-ranging discussion on the future of the game, including its competition structures, calendar and overall financing particularly in light of the effects of COVID-19.&nbsp;

"Football has many stakeholders, therefore this work should be carried out through the proper channels enabling all clubs and stakeholders the opportunity to contribute.

"In the Premier League's view, a number of the individual proposals in the plan published today could have a damaging impact on the whole game and we are disappointed to see that Rick Parry, Chair of the EFL, has given his on-the-record support.

"The Premier League has been working in good faith with its clubs and the EFL to seek a resolution to the requirement for COVID-19 rescue funding. This work will continue."

To reduce the Premier League from 20 to 18 teams, the report claimed four clubs would be relegated directly, with two promoted from the Championship.&nbsp;

In addition, there would be play-offs involving the team to finish 16th in the Premier League and those in third, fourth and fifth in the second tier.

The mooted change to voting proposals would also infuriate smaller clubs in the top-flight.

The 'big six', along with Everton, West Ham and Southampton would be granted special status.

If six of those nine clubs vote in favour of a proposal, it would be enough to get it passed.

The Uruguayan striker left Ligue 1's Paris St Germain after his contract expired last season, joined United on a free transfer, penning a one-year deal with an option to extend for a further 12 months.

"I know that once you're out on the pitch, the number you have on your shirt has no influence," the 33-year-old striker told the United website.

The iconic jersey was previously worn by United greats George Best, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

"But when you get the chance to pull on the No. 7 shirt at United... it really is a nice responsibility to have. I hope that I can do it great justice and leave it in as high regard as the many great players who have worn it before me."

While in PSG, Cavani scored 200 goals in 301 appearances becoming the all-time leading goal scorer for the French side.&nbsp;

"It's right up there with the best leagues anywhere in the world," he said. "For me that's a real honour and a new challenge, which really excites me a lot.

Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has now heavily criticized the players saying they could get the manager sacked if they continue to underperform.

Underperforming Manchester United players could get Solskjaer sacked: Roy Keane

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> chief executive Richard Masters has pleaded with the government to rethink its stadium supporter ban, calling for football to be treated "fairly".

Matches at the end of last season in the English top-flight and the beginning of the new campaign have been played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus crisis.

Plans to pilot a limited return of fans from October 1 were shelved last month due to tighter lockdown measures following a surge in cases of Covid-19 in Britain.

Masters told The Times newspaper that he welcomed the return of audiences to concert venues but said football stadiums should be included.

"It's good news that (concert) venues can run socially distanced events indoors, it gives them a lifeline," he said. "We are starting to see the return of the paying spectator at a ticketed event and we just believe that football should be allowed to do the same.

"We do understand why caution is needed but what we are asking for is consistency from government so that sport is treated as fairly as other activities."

"We are a highly regulated environment. We have the Sports Grounds Safety Authority in place to ensure that supporters are safe at all times and we're outdoors in a highly stewarded environment. What we really need is clarity for our clubs and supporters and a road map from government."

Masters said Premier League clubs were facing a number of tough challenges including the scrapping of the October return date for fans, expectations to help clubs lower down the pyramid and the frustration of seeing entertainment arenas close to football grounds reopen with no "roadmap" for the return of supporters.

Masters cited the example of the Bundesliga, which has allowed limited number of fans back depending on local virus rates, as one that clubs could potentially follow.

"The government is managing the country around local conditions so we have to be flexible in that respect," he said.

"We have been in regular conversation with our German counterparts and we are aware of how it's working and how it is not working for some clubs where the numbers are higher.

"Like everything, you have to start somewhere and just to do it would be fantastic. Football needs its voice back, we need fans back in the stadiums to provide that missing ingredient.

"Having fans back, even if it is not exclusively across the league, has given German football a massive boost."

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has pleaded with the government to rethink its stadium supporter ban, calling for football to be treated "fairly".

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters has pleaded with the government to rethink its stadium supporter ban, calling for football to be treated "fairly". "We do understand why caution is needed but what we are asking for is consistency from government so that sport is treated as fairly as other activities." "We are a highly regulated environment. Premier League chief pleads for rethink of stadium fan ban

Liverpool became the first reigning English champions to concede seven goals in a league match since 1953 and Manchester United were thrashed 6-1 as inquests started after a humiliating day for England's two most successful clubs.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side thought they had grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons against Tottenham on Sunday but Jurgen Klopp's team upstaged them in a scarcely credible 7-2 defeat against Aston Villa.

Klopp can argue Liverpool's defeat is a bizarre one-off after an impressive start to the season but United appear to be in deep trouble as the international transfer deadline looms on Monday.

Liverpool, who romped to the title by 18 points in the 2019/20 campaign, went into their match at an empty Villa Park with a 100 percent record in the league this season.

They were missing first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker through injury and were also without Sadio Mane and Thiago Alcantara, who have both tested positive for coronavirus, but were still expected to have too much for their opponents.

But Villa forward Ollie Watkins scored a first-half hat-trick and Jack Grealish had a hand in five goals as Liverpool's high line was torn apart by the home side's counter-attacking.

"It was unexpected but it happened tonight," said Klopp, whose side lost just four league matches over the previous two seasons.

"We put all our rubbish things and mistakes in one game and hopefully we can start again."

The Liverpool boss said he was desperate to get his players back on the training pitch but they are now heading off for an international break before gathering again for a tough-looking challenge at table-topping Everton.

"I would love to have a training session tomorrow and Tuesday and to talk about it, but the boys go back off to international duty," Klopp said. "Hopefully they come back healthy and we use the two days to prepare for Everton."

<h2>- United woes -</h2>

&nbsp;

While Liverpool will hope their result is an anomaly, there is plenty of evidence that United have lost their way.

The Old Trafford club have not competed for the Premier League title since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 but hopes were high after they finished third last season.

That optimism has been misplaced, with United soundly beaten 3-1 at home by Crystal Palace and incredibly fortunate to escape with a 3-2 victory at Brighton last weekend.

But they sank to a new low at an echoing Old Trafford on Sunday as Harry Kane and Son Heung-min ran riot, scoring two goals apiece against the home side, who were reduced to 10 men after the first-half sending-off of Anthony Martial.

Former United defender Gary Neville, now a TV pundit, described their performance as "an absolute shambles" as they matched their 6-1 loss to Manchester City in 2011.

United's players were fortunate there were no supporters in the ground to witness the rout.

Club captain Harry Maguire apologised to fans in an Instagram post, saying the performance was "unacceptable" and Marcus Rashford said there were no excuses.

Solskjaer took the blame for the humiliation, which once again raises major questions about whether he is the man to restore the club to their former glories.

"It's a horrible feeling, the worst day I've had as a Manchester United manager and player," said the Norwegian manager.

"It's nowhere near good enough. I hold my hands up. It's my decision to pick the team I did. Also as a squad, that's not good enough for Manchester United."

The chastening defeat comes at the end of another difficult transfer window for United, who look to have failed in their pursuit of their number one target, Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho.

Uruguayan striker Edinson Cavani is reportedly set to join the Red Devils after leaving Paris Saint-Germain, but it is at the other end of the pitch that United are most in need of reinforcements.

Brazil left-back Alex Telles appears likely to arrive from Porto but it does not look enough to shore up a leaky defence that has shipped 11 goals in three Premier League matches.

While Liverpool remain favourites to win a second successive Premier League table despite their humbling, United already look out of the running as they scramble for answers

Liverpool, Man Utd lick wounds after humbling Premier League defeats

Liverpool's in-form Senegalese forward Sadio Mane has tested positive for Covid-19 and is self-isolating, the club said Friday.

"Sadio Mane has tested positive for Covid-19 and is currently self-isolating according to the necessary guidelines," Liverpool said in a statement.

"The forward, who started and scored in Monday's 3-1 victory over Arsenal, has displayed minor symptoms of the virus but feels in good health overall.

"However, like with Thiago Alcantara, Liverpool Football Club are - and will continue to - follow all protocols relating to Covid-19 and Mane will self-isolate for the required period of time."

Thiago missed the Arsenal game after his own positive test and he and Mane will both be absent for Sunday's Premier League trip to Aston Villa.

Manager Jurgen Klopp will hope to have both players available when the Reds return to action after the international break in October 17's Merseyside derby at Everton.

Mane, 28, has been in fine form this season, scoring both goals in Liverpool's win over Chelsea before also netting against the Gunners.

His enforced isolation will also affect his international commitments after Mane was named in Senegal's squad for their upcoming friendlies against Morocco and Mauritania.

The Premier League is asking football's lawmakers to allow more flexibility and leniency for referees assessing handballs after being told by players and managers that the current regulations are too harsh.

England's top division has fielded complaints after a number of incidents in the opening rounds of the season, including that Eric Dier should not have conceded a penalty for Tottenham against Newcastle on Sunday when a ball came off his outstretched, raised arm.

Despite facing away from the ball, Dier was penalized because his arm was adjudged to be in an unnatural position after jumping to challenge Andy Carroll for the ball.

The penalty,&nbsp;&nbsp;awarded after a VAR review,&nbsp;allowed Callum Wilson to score and secure a 1-1 draw for Newcastle in stoppage time at Tottenham.

"You cannot jump without your hands," Dier told the BBC.

"You cannot defend without using your arms to balance and move so it is what it is."

Premier League referees, though, have to abide by the laws of the game formulated by the International Football Association Board. There is, however, English influence on the panel that first met in the 19th century. The home nations in the United Kingdom -- England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales -- have half of the votes and world governing body FIFA has the other four.

A clarification to the handball law in 2019 stated that hands or arms cannot make a players' "body unnaturally bigger".

The Premier League's Professional Game Match Officials body hopes the Laws of the Game could be updated and will ask IFAB for greater latitude.

Six of the 20 penalties awarded in the opening three rounds of the season have been for handball.

The Premier League has already responded to criticism by encouraging referees to soften their interpretation of handballs while still working within the spirit of the Laws of the Game.

According to a presentation shared within the Premier League, referees have now been told to consider the expected position of the arm,&nbsp;rather than just being outside the body line,&nbsp;when determining whether a handball should be penalised.

"Where the arms are clearly used for balance and/or protection," the presentation slide states, "it is less likely to be penalized."

That is also the case "where it is clear the player does not have the ability to react" and when the arm does not clearly block a direct shot.

The Premier League's interpretation of the law should also see players not penalized if:&nbsp;the "ball travels from close proximity where the player has a limited opportunity to respond." -&nbsp;the "player falls and the hand/arm is between the body and the ground to support the body, but not extended laterally or vertically away from the body."

Based on the Premier League's revised guidance for referees to interpret the laws, Victor Lindelof would not have conceded a penalty for Manchester United in a loss to Crystal Palace this month because his arm was in a natural running position.

Manchester City have announced the signing of Ruben Dias. The 23-year-old centre-back joins from Portuguese outfit Benfica, with Nicolas Otamendi moving in the opposite direction. Having undergone a medical in Lisbon prior to completing the deal, Dias arrived in Manchester on Monday.

A product of the Benfica academy, Dias enjoyed individual success at youth level, featuring in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship Team of the Tournament in 2016 and being named Cosme Damião Revelation of the Year the following season.

He went on to win both the Portuguese title and Super Cup during his three seasons in the first team, while also competing in the Champions League.

With 19 senior international caps already to his name, Dias won the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 with his native Portugal. He was named man-of-the-match in the final and also featured in the team of the tournament alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Virgil Van Dijk and City teammate Bernardo Silva.

Rúben Dias said: “To have the opportunity to join a club like Manchester City is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I couldn’t turn down. Their success speaks for itself. They have been the dominant team in England over the last few years, playing an attacking brand of football which I feel suits my own game.

“It is really exciting to be part of such a talented squad and to play for a world class manager like Pep Guardiola, who has a proven track record of developing young players like myself. “I believe I can improve here, at a club whose ambitions match my own and I will give everything to be successful and win titles.”

Txiki Begiristain added: “Ruben is a player we have admired for some time and we have been impressed with how he has progressed at Benfica. He has developed into a real leader and as a defender, he has all the attributes we are looking for. He is strong in the air, good in one v one situations and technically, he is very good, so we are confident he can thrive in our system.

“He is young but has gained valuable experience at a big European club in Benfica and we’re really pleased we’ve been able to sign him. He is another talented addition to the squad and someone who is only going to get better working under Pep.”

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson lambasted the interpretation of the handball rule after his side became the latest victim of a soft penalty award in a 2-1 defeat by Everton on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti's men extended their perfect start to go top of the Premier League as Richarlison's controversial spot-kick split the sides after Cheikhou Kouyate cancelled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fifth goal of the campaign.

Eagles defender Joel Ward was penalised for handball after the video assistant referee advised Kevin Friend to consult the pitchside monitor.

"I have to make bold statements, which I make no apologies for. I have despair about a rule that I believe is ruining the game of football," said Hodgson.

The former England manager was equally scathing of the easy awarding of penalties for handball when his side were the beneficiaries for their second goal in a 3-1 win at Manchester United last weekend.

"I predict what will happen is players will start flicking the ball on to a hand and screaming handball," added Hodgson. "A really good game destroyed by a decision."

Everton held on in the second half to make it three successive league victories and five wins in a row in all competitions, suggesting they could be contenders for a top-four finish.

"It is good to see the spirit in the team in this moment. We have started the season well," said Ancelotti.

"We have to look only for the momentum, that is good in this moment. In a busy time with another game on Wednesday, we have to keep the motivation, ambition and we are doing really well. The danger is behind us all the time when we do not behave properly."

The visitors went ahead with their first serious attack in the 10th minute.

Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez unfurled a sublime pass into Seamus Coleman and the captain cut back for Calvert-Lewin to net with conviction.

Palace hit back in the 26th minute when Kouyate got between Michael Keane and Richarlison to head his second goal for the club.

The Eagles richly deserved it and yet they were almost immediately pegged back when VAR had to look at a handball incident involving Ward on the half-hour mark.

Richarlison's cross had hit the Palace full-back on the shirt sleeve and it was not deemed a spot-kick, but it was only a brief let-off for Hodgson's men.

In the 40th minute, James's superb pass was headed by Lucas Digne onto Ward's hand in the penalty area.

Friend pointed to the spot after using the pitchside monitor and Richarlison fired into the corner to put Everton back in front.

Calvert-Lewin should have grabbed his sixth goal of the season and put the game to bed in the 51st minute, but his effort from James's corner sailed wide.

As rain poured down in south London, Palace pressed for an equaliser, with Wilfried Zaha and Ebere Eze having shots blocked.

Premier League: Kepa dropped as Caballero starts in goal for Chelsea

Manchester United and Chelsea need a swift response to their title credentials being damaged by home defeats last weekend, while one or both of Liverpool and Arsenal's perfect records will come to an end when they face off at Anfield on Monday night.

Crystal Palace and Everton also have the chance to claim top spot when they meet at Selhurst Park on Saturday, while the other side with maximum points from the opening two weekends, Leicester, face a daunting trip to Manchester City.

Gareth Bale will not be fit to feature to Tottenham when they host Newcastle on Sunday, but Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are enough for the Magpies to fear after the England captain set up the South Korean to score four at Southampton.

Chelsea travel to bottom-of-the-table West Brom, who are still seeking their first point back in the top-flight.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of this weekend's action.

<h2>Mayday for Man Utd?</h2>

Optimism that United could return to challenging for the title after a 14-game unbeaten run to end last season was washed away with that unbeaten record as Palace were good value for their 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men looked desperately short of match sharpness having had barely two weeks of pre-season training.

A month-long off season was also disruptive off the field with captain Harry Maguire being handed a suspended prison term in Greece, which he is appealing, and teenage striker Mason Greenwood being sent home by England for breaching coronavirus protocols when on international duty.

There is also outcry among the United fanbase at a lack of signings in the transfer market, while their rivals still spend freely despite the economic affects of the pandemic.

The Red Devils desperately need three points at Brighton on Saturday to bring some calm, but the Seagulls have shown enough in their opening two games to suggest United face a far tougher test than when they won 3-0 on the south coast in June.

Brighton were the better side for long spells despite losing 3-1 to Chelsea on the opening weekend and bounced back with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Newcastle.

United did manage to get past Championship side Luton in the League Cup on Tuesday despite Solskjaer making 10 changes, but the Norwegian needed to bring on Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Greenwood in the latter stages to kill the tie off with Rashford and Greenwood getting on the scoresheet.

"We need to get competitive games and minutes into the legs of our players because normally we're in a pre-season after such a short training (period)," said Solskjaer.

"It's great for them to get minutes as well but also goals."

<h2>More motivated Everton shine</h2>

Everton's investment in the transfer market is reaping immediate rewards as they have won their opening two league games of the season for the first time in seven years.

Carlo Ancelotti has been able to recruit Champions League-winning quality in James Rodriguez, alongside Brazilian international Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure in midfield.

"The players have come back with more ambition and motivation," said Ancelotti after finishing 12th last season. "The new signings have helped us be more motivated."

Palace will provide an early test of how far Ancelotti's men can go this season as they have picked off Southampton and United at ease on the counter-attack with Wilfried Zaha rediscovering his best form to score three times in two games.

<h2>Third time lucky for Liverpool?</h2>

Arsenal have got the better of Liverpool twice in recent months, but the acid test for Mikel Arteta's side comes at what he described as the "toughest place to go in the world", Anfield, on Monday.

The Gunners rode their luck to beat the Reds after Jurgen Klopp's men had sealed the title last season, but the Community Shield clash between the two a month ago was a far more balanced game, which Arsenal won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal have built on their momentum from winning the FA Cup by beating Fulham and West Ham to strengthen the conviction that Arteta can lead them back into the top four this season.

But Liverpool showed in sweeping aside Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend that they remain the team to beat and have only strengthened with the signing of Thiago Alcantara.

They played the match without Joao Cancelo, Bernardo Silva, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Sergio Aguero, Aymeric Laporte and Eric Garcia. Man City, who have won the League Cup for the past three seasons, will start the defence of their trophy against Bournemouth on Thursday and Guardiola knows they cannot afford to lose more players. "All we want is the seven players that are out to come back," he said. "Now we have a competition that we cannot spend the energy that we spent today, before Leicester (on Sunday), so we're going to play mostly academy players and try to keep the energy for the Premier League. "With this lack of preparation and seven players out and not coming back soon, we have to keep the players from Monday as safe as possible. "We will see how many are available, how they recover. We have just three days. We won the Carabao (League) Cup three times in a row and we would like to continue but we don't have the players in this period to play every three days." (Inputs from AFP)
