Portugal have no plans to man-mark Belgium playmaker Kevin de Bruyne as it would merely play into the hands of their multi-talented side, midfielder Joao Moutinho has said ahead of Sunday's Euro 2020 last 16 tie.

De Bruyne has only played 135 minutes at the tournament but has one goal and two assists, inspiring Belgium to a 2-1 comeback over Denmark and playing a pivotal role in the 2-0 win over Finland.

Moutinho said his team would have to work hard to keep De Bruyne at bay but would be better off coming up with a plan to deprive Belgium space overall.

"If he has space to play he's even more dangerous. But if they all have space, all of them will be able to play their game more calmly and that will make our job even more difficult," he told a news conference on Saturday.

"Kevin is very competent, we have to watch him closely but not just focus on one player. That would set the others free and that would be even worse. As a team we will try to minimize their strengths and make the most of ours."

Coach Fernando Santos also ruled out targeting individuals.

"It's not about pulling one of our players over to talk about player A, B or C because we have to focus on what we have to do as a team," he said.

"We can't afford to concede them any space, because of how much quality they have in midfield and attack. The team that defends the best, who knows how to manage the ball better and create opportunities, will win the game."

Portugal, who came third in Group F with four points, have two days less to prepare for the game than Belgium, who pulled off a clean sweep of victories to top Group B.

But Moutinho dismissed suggestions that would work against his side. "We can't give it too much importance. They'll have two more days than us but we will have had four to get to the game," he said.

"It happened to us at Euro 2016 and we still managed to recover well. We just have to make sure we rest and train well and are at 100%."

Euro 2020: Portugal won't man-mark Belgium's danger man Kevin De Bruyne, says Joao Moutinho

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez said on Saturday (June 26) that their last-16 Euro 2020 showdown against holders Portugal would depend on the first goal.

"I think in those sort of games there is always depending on the first goal," he told reporters at a news conference.

"We all know that Portugal are a group of phenomenal individuals [...] and a real threat on the counter-attack."

"When you see the two types of teams that we will have on the pitch will it will depend a lot on how the first goal goes in and how the game develops at that point," he stated.

Belgium last played such an important tie three years ago when they were beaten by France in the World Cup semi-finals.

Asked about striker Cristiano Ronaldo, defender Jan Vertonghen said they had respect for him but said his team was ready to play the tournament holders.

"He's the biggest player in the history of Portugal," he said.

"But tomorrow it is not Belgium against Ronaldo, it is Belgium against Portugal. And they have a lot of good players, a lot of of quality players and we do as well. So we will be ready," he said.

Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo is one goal away from setting a new record for most national team goals, while Belgium's Romelu Lukaku is Belgium's top scorer with 63 in 96 international appearances.

The comparison with the two has dominated the build-up to the last-16 clash between holders Portugal and top-ranked Belgium, in what could be the clash of the round.

Belgium's Romelu Lukaku believes he should be classified now as a world-class striker and says everything fell into place for him in the season just finished, as he looks ahead to meeting Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in the European Championship on Sunday.

The comparison with the two has dominated the build-up to the last-16 clash between holders Portugal and top-ranked Belgium in Seville, in what could be the clash of the round.

Ronaldo is one goal away from setting a new record for most national team goals, while Lukaku is Belgium’s top scorer with 63 in 96 international appearances.

"At his age, he continues to shine and I'm going to try and get as close to his achievements as possible," Lukaku said of his Portuguese rival, who he added was a major source of inspiration and motivation.

"Oh, I need competition. When someone says he's better than me, I want to transcend him. Ronaldo wants to be the best at everything,&nbsp;Kylian&nbsp;Mbappe also wants to win everything," Lukaku told reporters.

"I've taken a big step. Robert&nbsp;Lewandowski, Karim&nbsp;Benzema, and Harry Kane used to be talked about as world-class strikers. For me, those sort of comment was always limited to: 'He is in shape'. Well, now I'm world-class, too. That was my personal goal.

"It was important to start winning trophies, and the Serie A title with Inter gave me motivation and now I also want to win with the Red Devils. It would be the ultimate recognition for this team. If I play badly I will be really disappointed in myself and the team, because now is the right time to harvest."

Belgium’s golden generation has been top of the FIFA rankings for almost three years but is without a major tournament triumph, losing in the semi-finals of Russia 2018 to France three years ago.

"We were not mature enough at the World Cup against France. We tried too hard to do well and were beaten. Now we know how to win in many different kinds of ways.”

In a separate Saturday interview on Belgian television, Lukaku said success at Euro 2020 would cap a dream season.

"Everything has finally fallen into place this season. I have worked very hard in recent years and worked under the right coach at the right time. I analyzed myself a lot, and that really made a difference in playing better," he added.

Over 70 per cent of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus">coronavirus</a> cases in the Lisbon area are from the more contagious <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/kappa-delta-who-releases-greek-nomenclature-for-covid-variants-including-ones-found-in-india-388657">Delta variant</a>, which is quickly spreading to other parts of the country, a report said late on Friday, as authorities scramble to stop a worrying rise in infections.

The national health institute, Ricardo Jorge, said in its report that the Delta variant, first identified in India, represented 51 per cent of cases in mainland Portugal, showing the variant is "spreading rapidly" as it happened in Britain.

New coronavirus cases rose by 1,604 on Friday, the biggest jump since February 19, when the country of just over 10 million people was still under lockdown. In total, Portugal has recorded 871,483 cases and 17,081 deaths since the pandemic began.

Although most new cases are still concentrated in the populous Lisbon region, the southern Algarve region, famous for its beaches and golf courses, has the highest COVID-19 reproduction "R" number of 1.34, the report said.

The jump in infections comes after tourism-dependent Portugal opened to visitors from the European Union and Britain in mid-May. Most businesses have reopened and, as the summer season kicks off, beaches are packed.

On Thursday, Portugal imposed stricter rules, including forcing restaurants to shut earlier over the weekend in Lisbon and in the Algarve tourism magnet Albufeira, a popular destination for British visitors.

Britain removed Portugal from its quarantine-free travel list earlier this month and Germany declared Portugal to be a "virus-variant zone" on Thursday, a measure that will trigger severe restrictions on travel to and from the country.

The number of people in need of hospital care in Portugal, which faced its toughest battle against the virus in January, has also increased. There are 71 COVID-19 patients in intensive care in Lisbon, occupying 86 per cent of beds allocated to those infected by the virus.

To tackle the surge, Portugal is speeding up the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/coronavirus-vaccine">vaccination</a> of younger people at a time only around 30 per cent of the population has been fully vaccinated so far.

Delta variant 'spreading rapidly' from Lisbon to rest of Portugal

Top-ranked Belgium and their golden generation face an early reckoning at the European Championship against determined holders Portugal, who clawed their way into the last 16 to set up the potential match of the round on Sunday.

The contrast in progress could not have been greater with Belgium masterfully overcoming adversity to win all their group games, while a pugnacious Portugal saw their fortunes ebb and flow before they finished third in their section after holding world champions France to a 2-2 draw on Wednesday.

An extra day of rest was Belgium's reward for topping Group B, having seen the talismanic trio of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, and Axel Witsel all return from injury after it looked as if the heart of the team had been torn out on the eve of the tournament, threatening to scupper their strong chances.

The influence of the trio was clearly displayed when they came on after a torrid first half in Belgium’s second group against Denmark, neutralizing the emotion-fueled hosts and turning a halftime deficit into a 2-1 win in Copenhagen.

That allowed Roberto Martinez to rest players in the 2-0 win over Finland on Monday in a textbook tournament scenario.

But whether it turns out to be the ideal recipe for success in the knockout phase remains to be seen. It could be counterargued that Portugal is better prepared, having had to scrap against the likes of Germany, who beat them 4-2, and France.

SIMPLER FORMULA

Portugal coach Fernando Santos offered a simpler formula.

“These matches are all like finals now and if you don’t play well, you don’t win,” he told reporters.

“In league competitions, you can play badly and still win but here at this tournament, at this stage, if you don’t play well, you’ll lose... every time.”

Portugal has their own talisman in Cristiano Ronaldo, who needs one more goal to become the all-time top scorer in international soccer.

“He is in the form of his life,” said Belgium defender Toby Alderweireld, “but as a team, we can stop him. That has always been our strength.”

“But they will be difficult, they are a real tournament team,” he added.

The juxtaposition between the match-winning capabilities of Ronaldo and Belgium’s own prolific marksman Romelu Lukaku adds intrigue to the game at La Cartuja stadium

With 63 goals for his country, Lukaku, who is eight years younger than Ronaldo, might one day challenge the Portugal captain’s record.

Football: Early reckoning for top-ranked Belgium against title holders Portugal

Three-times European champions Germany shrugged off their opening game loss and announced their arrival as serious contenders at Euro 2020 with an emphatic 4-2 win over highly-rated&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;in their Group F match on Saturday.

The Germans had been beaten by world champions France in their opener prompting serious questions over their ability to make a challenge in this tournament but Joachim Loew's side responded to the pressure with an outstanding performance.

Cristiano Ronaldo had given the defending champions a 15th minute lead with his 107th international strike but Germany went in at the break 2-1 up thanks to own goals from Ruben Dias and Raphael Guerreiro.

The Germans turned on the style in the second half with efforts from Kai Havertz and the impressive Robin Gosens making it 4-1 before Diogo Jota pulled a goal back for&nbsp;Portugal.

The result throws the 'Group of Death' wide-open and gives Germany a strong chance of progressing to the last 16.

Germany, who face Hungary in their final game in Munich, move into second place in the group on three points, a point behind leaders France and level on points with the Portuguese. Hungary drew 1-1 with France earlier on Saturday.

It was not merely the result that suggested some pundits were wrong to write off Germany - the fluency of their passing, the killer crosses and the intelligent running was a reminder of the enduring qualities of German football that has delivered so much success on the biggest stages.

"Overall it was an outstanding performance from the team, great attitude, great spirit, we had many chances, outstanding," said Loew.

STRONG START

Germany started with purpose and confidence and thought they had grabbed the lead in the fifth minute through Gosens but VAR ruled that Serge Gnabry had been in an offside position.

Against the run of play,&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;grabbed the early lead, hitting the Germans on the break with Bernardo Silva picking out Jota on the left of the box and his low cross was tapped in from close range by Ronaldo.

It was the&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;skipper's third goal in two games and his first ever against Germany but Joachim Loew's side kept their cool and continued to play positive football before eventually getting their reward.

The Germans drew level in the 35th minute when Joshua Kimmich's cross from the right was volleyed at the back post by Gosens and flew into the net off the outstretched foot of&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;defender Dias as he looked to stop Havertz converting.

It was another own goal that gave Germany the lead -- Kimmich drove in a low ball from the right and Guerreiro's attempted clearance flew past his goalkeeper Rui Patricio.

Portugal&nbsp;replaced Bernardo Silva with Renato Sanches at the break but Germany took a firm grip on the game with a third goal six minutes after the restart -- a well-worked passing move ending with Havertz turning in a low ball from the left delivered by the influential Gosens.

GERMANY BUZZING

Germany were buzzing now and it was no surprise when they made it 4-1 on the hour with Gosens finishing off another well constructed attack, heading home a Kimmich cross at the far post.

Portugal&nbsp;struck back quickly though when a deep free-kick from Guerreiro looked to be heading out but Ronaldo acrobatically hooked the ball inside to Jota who slotted home.

Sanches fired a warning of a potential comeback when he thundered a long distance drive against the woodwork but Germany's victory was never really in doubt.

The threat from the wide areas was particularly impressive with Gosens dynamic on the left and Kimmich impressive on the right while Havertz's ability to ghost into space was never neutralised by the&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;defence.

"We wanted better movement up front. From the start there was tempo, good combinations, from the wings with Kimmich and Gosens... that was our plan and it worked," said Loew.

Despite a 3-0 win over Hungary in their opening game,&nbsp;Portugal's progress to the last 16 is not secure and they need to take something from their final game against France in Budapest.

"Anyone can progress. This group was always very strong," said&nbsp;Portugal&nbsp;coach Fernando Santos. "Whether we progress or not is still up to us. And we must respond to this."

Euro 2020: Germany bounce back with statement 4-2 win over Portugal

Portugal defender Ruben Dias said a grueling season with club side Manchester City had motivated him for Euro 2020 and he hoped to outdo himself in the national team's title defense.

Center-back Dias, who was named England's&nbsp;Footballer of the Year by the&nbsp;Football&nbsp;Writers' Association, played 50 matches for City in all competitions in the 2020-21 campaign apart from his national team commitments.

"This just motivates me. I like to outdo myself and I like to play always on the red line," Dias told reporters.

Global players' union FIFPRO warned that player welfare was not being considered when competition calendars were drawn up.

The Euros were postponed by a year due to the COVID-19 crisis, which delayed the start of the 2020-21 season and forced European leagues to complete the demanding season in time for the summer tournament.

A number of top club coaches criticized the compressed schedule but Dias played down the impact of fatigue.

"I want to do things that nobody has done before and the chance to represent my country with all these games behind me only motivates me further," Dias said.

"This also leads me to believe I can show that I'm doing well, that I'm strong, and that I can keep on playing."

Portugal began their campaign by beating Hungary 3-0 and take on Germany in their Group F match later on Saturday.

"Our expectations are that we're going to be facing one of the best teams in the Euros," Dias said.

"We're also one of the best teams and we're fully aware that even if we started off on the right foot we need to have our feet planted firmly on the ground."

Football: Portugal's Ruben Dias says demanding season motivated him for Euros

Ronaldo said on &nbsp;Monday he was looking forward to beginning Euro 2020 in front of a packed Puskas Arena against Hungary as he prepares to lead defending champions Portugal in their search for a repeat triumph.

At 36 years old Ronaldo is set take the field in front of 68,000 fans in the Hungarian capital on Tuesday in what should be Portugal's simplest match in a tough Group F alongside Germany and world champions France.

"It's perfect. I wish every single venue could host a full house. It's great for viewers and players, but sadly it's not up to us to decide," said Ronaldo.

"We know the pandemic has its influence. I wish we could always play before a full house."

Portugal have lost Joao Cancelo from their squad to Covid-19 after the Manchester City right-back tested positive for the virus on Sunday, but Ronaldo says the team are not worrying about the pandemic.

"We don't talk about Covid because we're tired of it. It's a sad situation but we're focused... Nothing will shake us... We're just focused on playing.

"I think the team is ready, physically and emotionally. The players are young but that doesn't stop us from dreaming. I know all the players are ready."

The Portugal captain is set to become the first person to play in at least one match at five European Championships, and also has another record in sight.

He needs just five more goals to equal Iranian Ali Daei's all-time mark of 109 international goals, a feasible target at this summer's tournament should Portugal go deep.

"I'm not the same player I was 18 years ago, 10 years ago, five years ago... you keep adjusting," said Ronaldo.&nbsp;

"I'm more mature, if a player wants to play for many years he needs to learn how to adapt. From 18 to 36 years old I've learned to adjust and adapt, and I've always been able to win personally and collectively."

A win over the Magyars would go a long way to ensuring Portugal qualify for the next round at least as one of the tournament's best third-placed teams as coach Fernando Santos targets two Euro titles in a row with a talented squad.

"Right now we think we have what it takes to win the cup," said Santos.

"There are very good opponents, seven or eight teams are playing to take the trophy home, and there are dark horses who also think they have a chance. The only difference is that we hold the title."

Portugal will soon be removed from England's so-called 'green list' that allowed quarantine-free travel between the two countries, th UK government announced on Thursday. The move has been slammed by Lisbon and Britain's tourism sector

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland announced the same rule would also apply to their travellers.

Portugal was the only European nation placed on the green list and UK's latest move is likely to prove disruptive to thousands of British holidaymakers.

The Portuguese foreign ministry reacted angrily, tweeting: "We take note of the British decision to remove Portugal from the travel 'green list', the logic of which we cannot understand".

A popular summer destination for Britons, from Tuesday at 4 am (0300 GMT) Portugal will be on the amber list, which requires travellers to quarantine at home for 10 days on their return and take several Covid-19 tests.

It joins other European Union countries on the list, with no nations added to the green section.&nbsp;

British government advises against travel to amber-listed countries.

Meanwhile, seven countries -- Afghanistan, Bahrain, Costa Rica, Egypt, Sri Lanka, Sudan and Trinidad &amp; Tobago -- will move from England's amber list to its red list from Tuesday, requiring 10 days costly quarantine in a hotel on return. Having won their first major trophy at Euro 2016, Portugal approach this year's tournament with a far better squad than last time and crucially have the belief which previous sides seemingly lacked.

For all the emotion released by Portugal's success five years ago, their Euro 2016 campaign was laced with good fortune, highlighted by the fact they only won one of their seven matches after 90 minutes.

Aside from some notable names, their squad was short on quality and their triumph was built on excellent game management, an over-reliance on Cristiano Ronaldo plus a kind draw which saw them avoid the top sides until facing France in the final.

They will get no such accommodation this time as they have been placed in the unforgiving Group F containing Germany and world champions France, with Hungary the weakest link.

So it is a good thing they have one of the most exciting squads around, full of proven matchwinners to take the burden off Ronaldo.

Their list of defenders alone makes for impressive reading. Ruben Dias was arguably Manchester City's most inspirational player in their dominant run to the Premier League title while club teammate Joao Cancelo has had his best-ever campaign at fullback and complements left-back Raphael Guerreiro perfectly.

Coach Fernando Santos has a wealth of options in holding midfield with a number of top candidates to partner with mainstay Danilo Pereira, but it is his attacking options that are the most exciting.

Indeed, the only concern for the coach is finding a place in the team for an overflowing list of stars containing Joao Felix, Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Diogo Jota, Andre Silva as well as the insatiable Ronaldo, who is heading into his ninth major tournament.

Ronaldo, who has scored 103 times for his country, is one of few survivors of the Euro 2016 side but a winning thread remains in the current crop of players after they lifted the 2019 Nations League.

To Santos, the experience of finally getting over the line could be crucial.

"Since I can remember, Portugal always went to tournaments to win, that's the standard. When I said I was going to Euro 2016 to win, I just verbalized what many thought in the past," Santos told newspaper Record in May.

"The players were surprised but now they believe it. It was not a question of not wanting to, it was because they had never really thought about it and doubted it was possible. But I was convinced if we did certain things and managed to instill in the players the benefits of doing them, we could beat anyone."

If a lack of belief held back previous talented sides containing the likes of Eusebio or Luis Figo, there can be little excuse for the current team, which is both as talented as any that came before it and knows what it takes to win on the biggest stage.

Football: Portugal have talent and mentality to go all the way again

Portuguese authorities have relaxed COVID-19 safety rules for thousands of English fans coming to Porto for Saturday's Champions League final, no longer requiring them to stay in bubbles and lifting restrictions on movement.

"The borders are open. The city and the country are opening up little by little. Within what is possible, freedom (of movement) will not be conditioned," Porto police Superintendent Cardoso da Silva told a news briefing on Thursday.

"There are no restrictions of movement for fans."

However, with only two days to go until match day, Silva said the contingency plan in place was under constant re-evaluation and could still undergo some alterations.

A police source told Reuters Portuguese authorities did not have enough time to fully prepare for the final as UEFA only announced it would move the event to Porto from Istanbul around two weeks ago.

Eight British police officers specialised in dealing with football fans are in Portugal and will work with Portuguese police to help ensure public order.

There will be a "robust" police presence around the stadium and the city, Silva said, though he did not specify how many officers have been mobilised to patrol the streets.

London Metropolitan Police Superintendent Lysander Strong, who is in Portugal to coordinate the operation between the two forces, said the two clubs had sent recommendations to fans to follow social distancing rules and wear a mask.

Since May 17, British visitors have been allowed into Portugal with proof of a negative PCR test result.

Silva said that around 80 charter flights with English soccer fans were expected to land on Saturday for the clash between Manchester City and Chelsea. Around 180 buses will take fans to the stadium.

Under rules previously announced by the Portuguese government, passengers were to fly back within 24 hours. But police spokesman Marco Almeida said that now they can stay longer if they choose not to take scheduled return flights.

Football: Cristiano Ronaldo leads formidable attack in Portugal's Euro squad

Portugal's&nbsp;football&nbsp;league has scrapped plans to welcome fans back into stadiums for the final round of fixtures on Wednesday.

In a statement released on Monday, the Liga Portugal cited the timing and uncertainty surrounding requirements that the country's health authorities will set out, as well as questions over fairness given only home teams would be allowed fans.

"In today's meeting, Board members unanimously decided that conditions will not be met for test-pilot events to take place and thus they are not authorising the return of fans," a Liga Portugal statement read.

"Given the uncertainty remaining about the conditions that health authorities will put in place, it would be impossible to prepare an implementation plan just one day before the games take place.

"This important reason is also compounded by the fact that the penultimate round of games did not have any fans in the stadiums.

"Now, given different objectives are still up in the air, allowing only one of the teams to have fans in the ground would be a grave distortion of sporting integrity and fairness amongst the sides."

The statement did, however, confirm the league would begin talks with the relevant authorities to ensure that fans could return to grounds for the beginning of the 2021-22 season.

Earlier this month Sporting won their first Primeira Liga title since 2002 but the relegation places are still to be decided with three points separating second-bottom Farense from Portimonense in 14th. Nacional have already been relegated.

This is the first season where there will be a relegation playoff, with the team that finishes third from bottom pitted against the third-placed team in the second division.

Porto's Estadio do Dragao stadium is due to host this season's Champions League final on May 29 between English clubs Manchester City and Chelsea.

European&nbsp;football's showpiece event was scheduled to be in Istanbul but UEFA shifted the final to Porto after Turkey was placed on the British government's red-list for travel, meaning English fans would not have been able to attend.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi won't be going to Portugal and France in early May as planned, in the backdrop of increasing COVID-19 cases in the country.

Modi was to travel to Portugal for the 16th India-EU summit on May 8th, following which he was to travel to France on a bilateral visit. India has been reporting over 250,000 Covid cases for some days, raising widespread concerns. The situation is dire in the national capital Delhi, which reported 10 deaths every one hour in the last 24 hours due to covid. The 15th India-EU summit took place virtually amidst the Covid pandemic in July last year as the PM had to defer his Brussels visit back then. The development comes in the backdrop of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson deferring his India visit for the second time due to Covid crisis. PM Modi won't be going to Portugal, France as Covid cases surge

More than six years after his arrest in a major corruption investigation, Portugal's former Prime Minister Jose Socrates will stand trial, but only on lesser charges of money laundering and falsifying documents, a judge in Lisbon ruled on Friday.

In a decision that sent shockwaves through the country, Judge Ivo Rosa of Portugal's highest criminal court dismissed the corruption accusations against Socrates, 63, as weak, inconsistent or lacking sufficient evidence, and noted that the statute of limitations had run out on some of them.

"Prosecutors' arguments are based on speculation and fantasy," he said while reading out his decision.

Rosa also dismissed tax fraud charges against Socrates, who will be tried on three counts of money laundering worth some 1.7 million euros and three others of faking documents related to service contracts and the purchase and renting of an apartment in Paris.

Socrates has denied wrongdoing, labelling the investigation as politically motivated as he sought to avoid a trial.

Businessman Carlos Santos Silva, a friend of the former prime minister who is accused of acting as a middleman in the deals, will also stand trial. He also has denied the charges.

A socialist who served as prime minister from 2005 to 2011, Socrates was arrested at Lisbon's airport in November 2014 as part of Portugal's biggest-ever corruption investigation, codenamed Operation Marquis. It was the first time an ex-premier had been arrested in the country.

He spent months in jail before being placed under house arrest.

In a country notorious for its slow justice system, it took prosecutors three years after the arrest to formally charge Socrates with 31 crimes allegedly committed in the 2006-2015 period.

Those included passive corruption while in office, tax fraud and financial crimes in an alleged scheme involving the disgraced former heads of Banco Espirito Santo (BES) and Portugal Telecom. Ricardo Salgado, former head of the collapsed BES, will be tried for "confidence abuse". Salgado has denied wrongdoing.

"Something unique happened here today. All the great lies of the prosecution collapsed," Socrates told reporters, adding that he will fight the remaining accusations. A few protesters shouted "Shame!" as he spoke.

No trial date has been set and both sides are expected to appeal Rosa's decision.

Socrates stepped down as prime minister in March 2011, during the middle of his second term, after a debt crisis forced him to request an international bailout for the Iberian nation.

A subsequent centre-right government imposed a painful austerity program including tax hikes and wage and pension cuts.

The Socialist Party returned to power in 2015 under current Prime Minister Antonio Costa, who had led the interior ministry for two years during Socrates' first term in office.

Belgium top the group with seven points from three games, three points ahead of the Czech Republic who fell to a 1-0 defeat in Wales after Daniel James headed a late winner from a cross by Gareth Bale. The Welsh have three points.

Both sides ended with 10 men after Patrik Schick saw red for the Czechs just after halftime, while Connor Roberts was sent off for the hosts shortly before the winning goal.

The Netherlands could not quite match their neighbours Belgium but four goals in nine second-half minutes helped them demolish Gibraltar in Group G.

Only Steven Berghuis's goal separated the sides at halftime but Luuk de Jong, Memphis Depay, Georginio Wijnaldum and Donyell Malen all scored in quick succession before Donny van de Beek added a sixth and Depay got his second to give the Dutch their biggest away win since a 7-0 success over San Marino in 1993.

The Netherlands have six points, one behind Turkey who were surprisingly held to a 3-3 draw at home by Latvia.

Turkey had beaten the Dutch and Norway in superb fashion to lead the group but came unstuck as Davis Ikaunieks scored late on for Latvia to deny the hosts a third consecutive win.

World Cup Qualifiers: Belgium hit eight, seven for Dutch, Portugal survive scare

&nbsp;Portugal have themselves to blame for squandering a two-goal lead against Serbia in their World Cup qualifier before a livid Cristiano Ronaldo was denied a clear winner in stoppage time, forward Diogo Jota said.

Saturday's Group A match in Belgrade ended in a 2-2 draw after Ronaldo's stoppage-time effort crossed the line before it was cleared by Serbia defender Stefan Mitrovic, who then blocked a goal-bound follow up from Bernardo Silva.

A furious Ronaldo walked off the pitch and threw the captain's armband on to the turf seconds before Dutch referee Danny Makkelie blew full time, having been booked for dissent after the officials failed to award the goal. There was no VAR in place to review the decision.

"What happened can't happen at this level because we switched off and let Serbia draw level 15 minutes into the second half," said Liverpool forward Jota, whose brace had given the Portuguese a 2-0 lead in the first half.

"It looked like the hard part was done after a very good first half but Serbia changed their formation at halftime, scored quickly and built on from there.

"We failed to kill the game off and we can't let that happen again in the future."

Coach Fernando Santos added:

"I warned my players at halftime Serbia would make changes by switching to one up front in order to boost the midfield and I have no explanation why we let them back into the game.

"But we regained control after Serbia equalised and in the end we had a goal that didn't count."

Serbia coach Dragan Stojkovic praised his team for a spirited fightback.

"The word 'surrender' is not part of our vocabulary and the result as well as the performance shows that we are on the right track," he said. "Don't forget we were up against the European champions but I still hoped we could win the match."

The result left Serbia top of the group on four points from two games ahead of Portugal on goals scored, with Luxemburg behind them on three points after a shock 1-0 win in Ireland.

IPU chief: India, Portugal are brothers; backs UNSC permanent membership for India

The rising influence of the Indian-origin community around the globe has made it impossible for governments to ignore the largest diaspora in the world.

It’s not just the US or UK where the Indian diaspora is influential. Indians account for a third of the United Arab Emirates’ total population. Countries like Canada, the UK and the US have several politicians and representatives who trace their roots to India—from US vice-president Kamala Harris to Canadian senator Sarabjit Marwah.

Over 200 Indian-origin people occupy leadership positions in as many as 15 countries, including the US and the UK, building a legacy for future generations, according to a first-of-its-kind list by a US-based organisation working among the Indian diaspora.

The 2021 Indiaspora Government Leaders List, which was released on Monday, had drawn from government websites and other publicly-available resources to prepare the report to showcase the achievements of the community leaders across different sectors.

It said that more than 200 leaders of Indian heritage have ascended to the highest echelons of public service in 15 countries across the globe, with over 60 of them holding Cabinet positions.

"It is a huge source of pride to have the first woman and first person of colour as the Vice President of the world's oldest democracy be someone of Indian heritage. We wanted to use this seminal moment on Presidents' Day to highlight a host of others in the diaspora who also are in public service," said Indiaspora founder M R Rangaswami, a Silicon Valley-based entrepreneur and investor.

He was referring to Kamala Harris, the first woman Vice President of the United States.

"These leaders are building a legacy for future generations, and one that extends beyond our community to all of the constituents and communities that they serve," Rangaswami said in a statement.

The list also includes diplomats, legislators, heads of central banks and senior civil servants from countries with significant histories of diaspora migration, such as Australia, Canada, Singapore, South Africa, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

"It is an honour to be included on the 2021 Indiaspora Government Leaders List. As the longest-serving Indian-American member of Congress, I am proud to be a leader in the Indian-American community, which has become an integral part of American life and society," said Congressman Ami Bera, Chairman of the US House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia.

With more than 32 million people of Indian-origin or (PIOs) globally, according to India's Ministry of External Affairs, Indians are the largest diaspora population in the world.

The officials on the 2021 Indiaspora Government Leaders List collectively represent more than 587 million constituents, and their countries account for an estimated USD 28 trillion in GDP, demonstrating the impact these leaders are having globally, Indiaspora said in a statement.

"It truly is inspiring to note the remarkable contribution that government leaders of Indian heritage have made to advance the societies that they now represent.

"For a sizable segment of the population, it is government policy addressing social injustices that lead to a transformative path of sustainable socio-economic progress," said Rosy Akbar, Fiji's Minister of Education, Heritage, and Arts.

The list includes immigrants from India, as well as professionals born in countries such as Singapore, South Africa, England, Canada and the US.

Portugal's Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa is also of Indian descent. Born on July 17, 1961, in Lisbon, Costa was raised in the intellectual circles frequented by his parents, Orlando da Costa, a communist writer descended from a family from Goa, Portugal's former colony in India, and Maria Antonia Palla, a journalist and women's rights advocate.

"As a proud Indo-Canadian, it is an honour to be included in the 2021 Indiaspora Government Leaders List alongside an accomplished and diverse group of leaders from the India diaspora," said Senator Ratna Omidvar.

"I am eternally proud of my Indian heritage but also being Canadian. Canada has given me its protection and its opportunities, and in return, I am committed to making it a better place so that it continues to be a land of protection and opportunity for future Canadians," he said.

While some of the officials are part of their country's first wave of immigration, arriving as refugees or for economic opportunities, others serving in their governments are part of subsequent waves of diaspora, who came for educational opportunities, or are of subsequent generations, Indiaspora said.

"It is inspiring to see the number of Indian diaspora&nbsp;who are entering the public arena," said Indiaspora Board Member Arun Kumar, chairman and CEO at KPMG India, who served as Assistant Secretary of Commerce in the Obama administration.

"Having had the opportunity to serve, I can speak to what a memorable and fulfilling experience it was. Above all, it was a meaningful way to give back. My hope is that this cohort of leaders will set an example for even more of the Indian diaspora to aspire to public service," Kumar added.

From US, UK to Portugal & Canada: Indian-origin politicians are everywhere

Portugal parliament is expected to pass a law that will allow medically assisted euthanasia. The law, if passed will make Portugal fourth country in Europe to legalise euthanasia. The proposal to change the law was approved in February in the Catholic-majority country. The bill legalises access to assisted suicide for adult patients in a situation of "extreme suffering and irreversible damage". Doctors and psychiatrists must validate the decision if the patient's ability to make a "free and informed" choice is in doubt. The vote is expected to take place around midday (local time) today.

Any new bill must then be signed into law by recently re-elected president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, a staunch Catholic and conservative who has not publicly taken a position on the issue.

The president can choose to veto the law but a second vote by lawmakers can override the decision.

"People deserve the right to be able to choose," said retired oncologist Jorge Espirito Santo, who has campaigned for years to make euthanasia legal.

He added he was expecting a "historic day".

The Catholic Church, which predominates in Portugal, campaigned against the draft bills both among its faithful and those of other denominations.

"The Church's position has not changed," spokesman for the Portuguese Episcopal Conference, Father Manuel Barbosa told AFP.

"Of course we hope that this law will not be approved."&nbsp;

Portugal is confident the European Commission will approve its plan to rescue ailing flag carrier TAP, Finance Minister Joao Leao said in an interview, adding that he expected that green light by the end of March.

The government unveiled its overhaul plan last month, proposing 2,000 job cuts by 2022 and pay cuts of up to 25%, while saying the airline would need around 2 billion euros ($2.46 billion) in extra funds with state guarantees to cover financing needs until 2024.

The stakes are high: if the EU executive rejects Lisbon`s proposal, TAP would have to immediately repay a 1.2 billion euro rescue loan agreed in June, which could lead to its insolvency.

Leao told Reuters that, as part of the rescue plan, the government envisaged converting that loan to equity, which could raise the government`s stake in the airline to about 90%. The government was not contemplating asking private bond holders to take a haircut on payments to ensure TAP`s financial viability, but had not yet ruled it out either.

"The main concern of the plan is that to make the firm sustainable," Leao told Reuters.

Formal negotiations with the European Commission formally started this month, he said, adding: "We expect in the first quarter to have the plan approved."

"We are proposing that a big part of this (1.2 billion euro) loan is converted from loans to equity, so that the financial indicators of the firm improve," Leao said.

The Portuguese government currently has a 72.5% stake in the company. Leao said "one possibility" was to turn the whole loan into equity, which he estimated could boost that stake to around 90%.

He stressed that "the support measures by the government are limited in time," adding that the aim was that TAP would eventually return to financing itself on the markets.

"It is important for the firm to live by itself ... so that as soon as possible, if possible starting next year or later on, the firm can stop having to be financed by the state."

Asked if the ailing carrier should aim to do so on a standlone basis or strike an alliance with another air carrier, he said: "it might be interesting to have another player to also help TAP to make sure the firm becomes competitive and profitable."

TAP reported losses of more than 700 million euros for the first nine months of 2020.

Asked if there could be a haircut on the 725 million euros of debt held by TAP`s bondholders, he responded: "so far, is not in the plan, but that is a discussion we need to have with the European Commission to make sure that all stakeholders are involved".

Gravitas: The pandemic is far from over

Portuguese singer Carlos do Carmo, one of the country`s most beloved artists who was known as the "Sinatra" of the soulful, melancholic fado music, died on Friday at the age of 81.

Do Carmo, born in Lisbon in 1939, said goodbye to the stage last year after a long career during which he took fado around the world. He became the first Portuguese artist to receive a Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014.

He died on the morning of New Year`s Day at Lisbon`s Santa Maria hospital after suffering an aortic aneurysm, Portuguese media reported.

"Carlos do Carmo was not only a notable fado singer... one of his greatest contributions to Portuguese culture was the way he renewed fado and prepared it for the future," Prime Minister Antonio Costa wrote on Twitter.

"He was the voice of Portugal," President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said on broadcaster TVI.

Fado, which grew out of the streets and taverns of Lisbon in the 19th century, expresses the Portuguese tendency to "saudade" - a word for which no direct translation exists but implies a bitter-sweet sense of longing.

Although traditional fado songs were the core of do Carmo`s career, he brought in influences from the musical styles of artists ranging from Brazilian bossa nova musicians to Frank Sinatra to give the musical form his own twist, at times singing with an orchestra instead of the traditional ensemble of just a singer and two guitar players.

He took fado to the world`s biggest stages, from London`s Royal Albert Hall to New York`s Town Hall. He also supervised a film about fado, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2007.

In 2009, do Carmo was chosen by Lisbon`s then mayor alongside leading fado performer Mariza to be the ambassador of the musical genre`s candidacy for world heritage status, granted two years later by UNESCO.

Tributes poured in on social media upon news of his passing. The Portuguese navy posted on Twitter on Friday that Lisbon, the city that inspired one Carmo`s most iconic songs, "woke up feeling sadder today".
