A giant fish, discovered in the Azores archipelago in Portugal last year, weighed around three tonnes (2,744 kilogrammes). The large ocean sunfish, believed to be the world's heaviest bony fish, was found dead.

Although, the fish was found last year, floating near Faial Island off Horta Harbor in the central North Atlantic in December, but details have been recently published in the Journal of Fish Biology.

In the report, a team of researchers who are affiliated with several institutions in Portugal released details of this extremely large ocean sunfish. The researchers worked with a colleague from New Zealand and another from Japan. They probed why the fish might have died.

Portugal is officially launching a one-year 'digital nomad' visa, and it’s directly aimed at remote workers. By launching this visa, Portugal joins the list of countries that already offer such opportunities to all internationals who plan to work remotely.

World Business Watch: Portugal announces a one-year ‘digital nomad’ visa for remote workers

Portugal has released the list of requirements for its highly anticipated Digital Nomad Visa. Priyanka Sharma brings you the details.

WION Fineprint | Portugal to introduce a Digital Nomad visa

Portugal is all set to introduce a new digital nomad visa which can be perfect for individuals who are currently working remotely. In the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic, a huge number of people have stopped going to the office and the new visa can be the perfect choice for such individuals.

According to the notification released by the Portuguese government, the visa will go into effect on October 30, and it will allow holders to stay in the country for up to a year. They can apply for an extension at the end of the period, but it will be judged according to normal visa regulations.

The country also has a golden visa program which is a “pathway to European citizenship” and according to Reuters, several Americans have moved to Portugal in recent years due to lax tax rules.

“Digital nomadism is a trend that has been gaining traction since the early 2020s and with the Covid-19 pandemic, remote working became a reality for many workers,” Patricia Casaburi, managing director of Global Citizen Solutions, an investment migration company, told Bloomberg.

However, the government has announced some rules and regulations when it comes to digital nomad visa. In order to apply for the visa, individuals will have to submit proof of tax residency along with employment contracts or documents which officially prove that they are self-employed.

The other main criterion for the visa is proof of income which needs to show that the earnings of the individual over the last three months are more than at least four times the national minimum wage in Portugal, which is currently €705 ($689) a month.

War-torn Ukraine will join Spain and Portugal in a bid to host the 2030 World Cup, presidents from the three countries' football associations announced on Wednesday. The original proposal was made public two years ago and the Spanish football association (RFEF) said in a statement the idea was backed by UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

"The Royal Spanish Football Federation and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) have incorporated the Ukrainian Football Association (UAF) into the Iberian Bid to organise the 2030 World Cup," RFEF said in a statement. "With the full support of Aleksander Ceferin, the Iberian bid incorporates the federation chaired by Andriy Pavelko in order to build bridges and project a message of unity, solidarity and generosity from all of European football," it added.

Portugal hosted the 2004 European Championship while Ukraine was a joint host with Poland of Euro 2012. "The example of tenacity and resilience set by the Ukrainian people is inspiring," the FPF said. The FPF added that the joint bid "aims to contribute through the power of football to the recovery of a country undergoing reconstruction". It added that the terms of Ukraine's role in the bid "will be discussed and defined in due course".

It follows the announcement last month from an Egyptian official that Egypt, Greece and Saudi Arabia are in talks to jointly host the 2030 World Cup. In August, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Paraguay launched their bid to host the event -- which is the centenary of the first World Cup, held in Uruguay -- with the hope of bringing the global showpiece back to its first home.

The 2026 edition has already been awarded to three countries -- Canada, Mexico and the United States. More than half of the 21 World Cup finals already staged have been in Europe but later this year Qatar will host the finals, the first time they have been played in the Middle East.

Alvaro Morata's late goal earned Spain a 1-0 win in Portugal and the last place in the UEFA Nations League finals on Tuesday, while the Czech Republic were relegated from the top tier after losing in Switzerland. Portugal, winners of the inaugural Nations League in 2019, needed just a point in Braga to finish top of Group A2 but dropped to second as Morata tapped in Nico Williams' header on 88 minutes.

"When we had to stand up, we did," Morata told TVE. "If we had lost, it had to be giving everything we had on the pitch, and that's what we did." Spain join the Netherlands, Italy and Croatia in the finals which are scheduled for June next year. Switzerland, who beat Spain 2-1 in Zaragoza on Saturday, were indebted to goalkeeper Yann Sommer as he saved a second-half penalty to preserve victory over the Czechs.

Remo Freuler and Breel Embolo scored within a minute of each other in the first half in St Gallen, but Patrik Schick pulled one back before the break. Schick saw his second-half penalty kept out by Sommer as the Swiss won 2-1, condemning the Czech Republic to relegation to League B. Scotland clinched promotion to League A after a 0-0 draw against Ukraine in Krakow, having beaten the same opponents 3-0 last week in Glasgow.

"We don't want to stop, we want to keep getting better," said Scotland coach Steve Clarke. "These players are desperate to do well for their country and they have had a great week." Robbie Brady's stoppage-time penalty gave the Republic of Ireland a 3-2 victory over Armenia in Dublin in the other game in Group B1.

Irish captain John Egan and Michael Obafemi put the hosts two goals in front but Armenia equalised as Artak Dashyan and Eduard Spertsyan struck in quick succession. Dashyan and Hovhannes Hambartsumyan were sent off to leave Armenia with nine players as Brady's winner saw the Irish finish third in the section.

Serbia took top spot in Group B above Norway as forward pair Dusan Vlahovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic got the goals in a 2-0 victory in Oslo. Mitrovic's strike was his 50th at international level. He scored a hat-trick in Saturday's 4-1 win over Sweden. Sweden will drop into League C after a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in Solna, where Emil Forsberg cancelled out Benjamin Sesko's opener for the visitors. Greece made it five wins from six in Group C2 as they beat Northern Ireland 3-1 in Athens. Kosovo thrashed Cyprus 5-1 in Pristina.

Spain pip Portugal to reach Nations League finals as Czech Republic go down

India is a sport-loving country. While cricket continues to rule the hearts of many across the nation, many other sports have also risen in popularity in recent years. Football is rising at a rapid pace but still has miles to cover to make an impact globally. The likes of Sunil Chhetri, Indian football captain, goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and the likes have created a strong base, but many of their young followers need to stand tall and help the country's football to make a strong impact worldwide.

Andre Villas-Boas -- football manager and Laureus ambassador -- is one of the youngest top-flight managers who won the Europa League with FC Porto at 33. The game has been associated with him over the years. Recently, he got a chance to interact with underprivileged kids during his three-day visit to India -- and spoke at length on the future of the game in the country during an exclusive interaction with Wion Sports' Editor Digvijay Singh Deo.

After conducting a masterclass for the young small children of Delhi, the former Chelsea manager Andre revealed how his meeting went with the young kids. "Emotionally, it was very very rewarding for me. Hope it was the same for them. I'm thankful for the work done by Slum Soccer for these kids in India. I'm humbled and honoured. In such difficult circumstances they live, without infrastructure, and these 30 kids are still able to enjoy themselves. Put out the best skills they have. Not only technical skills but also cooperation, leadership and communication are some important tools they can take into their future. I thank Slum Soccer once again and Laureus for the work they do. We need more and more to change other people's lives."

During his visit to Delhi, Andre caught up with young football fan Jatin, a goalkeeper for his local football club - Rurka Kalan. Their mutual love for football made them connect instantly and Jatin got a chance to interact with the former Chelsea manager, a moment he will not forget for quite some time.

Jatin earned the chance to meet Andre after winning a unique drawing competition, which featured hundreds of participants from around the world. The young Indian fan's design will now be engraved on the back of the 16th special edition timepiece that Swiss luxury watch manufacturer IWC Schaffhausen has launched in collaboration with Laureus Sport for Good.

“I am really excited to be in India to meet Jatin and the young people from Slum Soccer. It’s wonderful to think that the watch which Jatin helped to design will contribute to raising awareness for Laureus. It was a great honour recognising Jatin as the winner of the competition and we enjoyed talking about football during our time together.

I am also thinking of all the other young people, like Jatin, who are in Laureus programmes around the world, similar to Slum Soccer here in New Delhi, and who are benefiting from the experience. This is a brilliant and unique initiative and I would like to thank Laureus Global Partner IWC sincerely for their support," Andre said about his interaction with the young fan.

Football is certainly one of the most accessible sports to play. On being asked if he feels Indian football needs that push as, despite the population, India has not reached the levels it should have, Andre pointed out that we need to tap into the talent.

"I think you need a lot of reforms. I know a lot of Portuguese have come here for the stars league that you (India) have proposed. I spoke to them before coming and they told me to make the most of the experience. You need to create a culture. You need to get the football into schools, into kids' heads so that they idolise their heroes and try to emulate them. The Ronaldos and the Messis. But you need the infrastructure and conditions. You guys have enough technical skills, you just need to work on it."

The population of India surely indicates that there is no dearth of talent across any field. Thus, hopes for high for Indian football and the youngsters joining the game to take it to a level that it has never reached as yet.

Listen, the past six years have been the best ever. We have won the Euro and the Nations League. The talent coming through doesn't stop. One of the greatest footballers of all time, Ronaldo has been going strong despite turning 37 earlier this year. Remains of what can be regarded as the largest dinosaur ever discovered in Europe were found in a back garden in Portugal. When the property owner in the city of Pombal found pieces of fossilised bone in the yard and called scientists from the University of Lisbon, an excavation operation in the area began in 2017.

The vertebrae and ribs of what Spanish and Portuguese palaeontologists believe to be a brachiosaurid sauropod have been discovered at the site earlier this month.

The largest living land animal, and the largest of all dinosaurs, was the sauropod.

Elisabete Malafaia from the University of Lisbon said, "It is not usual to find all the ribs of an animal like this, let alone in this position, maintaining their original anatomical position."

As per the size of the bones discovered in the yard, the dinosaur was 12 metres tall and 25 metres long, The Guardian reported.

Researchers are hopeful that additional excavation will turn up more pieces of the same dinosaur because of the skeleton’s natural posture.

Marta Temido, the Portuguese health minister, stepped down on Tuesday after she received widespread criticism for her decision to temporarily close emergency obstetric services.

Marta Temido, the Portuguese health minister, stepped down on Tuesday after she received widespread criticism for her decision to temporarily close emergency obstetric services. It caused risky transfers of pregnant women from one hospital to another. It also led to the death of a pregnant Indian woman during transfer, India-based news agency ANI reported. The report also noted that the resignation was announced five hours after the news of the death of the pregnant woman in Lisbon. In a statement, the health ministry of the country said that Temido had decided to resign because she "realised that she no longer had the conditions to remain in office". On the official website of the Presidency of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had already assumed that he was awaiting the resignation request of Temido. The text read: "The President of the Republic was informed by the Prime Minister, (...) of the intention of the Minister of Health, Marta Temido, to cease her duties, a position she accepted." Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa said in a separate statement that he had accepted her resignation and thanked Temido for her work. The statement also mentioned that Costa also thanked her for organising a successful vaccination campaign against coronavirus (COVID-19). Death of pregnant Indian woman ANI mentioned that the pregnant Indian woman died on Saturday after she was transferred on Tuesday from Hospital de Santa Maria to Hospital Sao Francisco Xavier. She was getting transferred because of the lack of vacancies in the neonatology service. RTP News reported that during the transfer, there was a cardiorespiratory arrest. Resuscitation work was carried out on the woman during transit but she did not survive. The government took the measure to close emergency obstetric services, especially at weekends. This led to several hospitals without enough doctors during the summer holidays. In the country, the opposition parties and municipalities have criticised the minister because pregnant women sometimes have to make risky trips to hospitals far away. The heatwave has caused over 1,700 deaths on the Iberian peninsula alone, the World Health Organization’s European office said on Friday (July 22). The Iberian Peninsula is a mountainous region that is most associated with Spain and Portugal.

Not just in Spain and Portugal, the unprecedented heatwave has caused death and destruction across Europe. “Heat kills. Over the past decades, hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of extreme heat during extended heatwaves, often with simultaneous wildfires,” WHO regional director for Europe Hans Kluge said in a statement.

“This year, we have already witnessed more than 1,700 needless deaths in the present heatwave in Spain and Portugal alone,” Kluge added.

As quoted by the news agency AFP, the regional director further added that exposure to extreme heat “often exacerbates pre-existing health conditions”. The official added that “individuals at either end of life’s spectrum – infants and children, and older people – are at particular risk”.

A lot has been said and written about Cristiano Ronaldo's possible exit from Manchester United. Commencing his second innings at the Red Devils last year, Ronaldo's presence also couldn't help United finish the last EPL season on a high, ending at the sixth spot, and missing out on Champions League football as well.

While Ronaldo had made it clear that he is not going anywhere and will continue to be at the premier club, things have changed in the past few weeks. Since his agent has reportedly held discussions with several top clubs, which includes Chelsea, Bayern Munich, PSG, etc. (even though not much interest has been shown), a new twist has unfolded in Ronaldo's transfer saga.

As per reports, the Portuguese superstar has now received a mind-boggling offer from a club in Saudi Arabia. It has been reported by TVI and CNN Portugal, that the club has made a staggering and irresistible offer to rope in the Man United superstar with a transfer fee of £30 million and a salary of £105 million per year. Despite being 37, the Portuguese captain Ronaldo remains in huge demand across the footballing fraternity. He is one of the fittest athletes overall and bagged a total of 24 goals across competitions last season for the Red Devils.

Danielle van de Donk`s superb goal gave the Netherlands an important 3-2 win over Portugal in their Group C match at Leigh Sports Village on Wednesday, helping the defending champions move to the top of the group table. Damaris Egurrola gave the Dutch, a team hit by injury and illness, a seventh-minute lead with a fine header from a corner. Nine minutes later, Stefanie van der Gragt doubled the lead with another goal. But Portugal refused to give up and showed some remarkable resistance. Carole Costa scored a goal via the penalty in the 38th minute of the game to make it 2-1.

At half-time, Portugal was trailing by a goal in the game. Two minutes after the break, Diana Silva made things even for Portugal, heading home a fine cross from Costa. In the 62nd minute, Van De Donk netted the decider, collecting the ball on box`s edge and curling it into the far corner to make it 3-2 in favour of Netherlands.

Manchester United is aiming for a revamp ahead of the new EPL season. Despite that, the Red Devils haven't made a lot of signings. Thus, this has left Cristiano Ronaldo miffed and as per reports, he has been offered by his agent to move to Bayern Munich or Chelsea. While the Red Devils have maintained their stance that the star striker isn't up for sale, his agent Jorge Mendes is trying hard to find the best solution for the superstar footballer amid United's struggles for making a plethora of promising signings.

While there still is a couple of months for the summer transfer window to end, things might change with regard to Ronaldo. However, if he plans to switch and move to Chelsea or any other club, Man United might reportedly replace him with Paris Saint Germain (PSG) striker Neymar.

Talking about the 30-year-old Neymar, the Brazilian's case is quite opposite. Although the Brazilian hasn't indicated that he is willing to make a move from PSG, the French club is said to be looking to offload him for the right price. There are those who suggest that Neymar could be available for EUR 50 million this summer. Thus, Man United can certainly afford him at that price if they lose Ronaldo's services.

According to a report carried out in RMC Sport, Neymar remains top of Man United's wishlist as a potential replacement for Ronaldo.

After the Red Devils ended sixth in the last EPL season, there were speculations of Ronaldo leaving the club. Back then, he stated, "I was happy to be back in a club that really raised my career so it was unbelievable, the feeling when I came back again," Ronaldo said. "I was and still am very happy to be here," Ronaldo told Manchester United in an interview early this month. "The most important thing for me is to try to win the games and try to win some championship... but I believe that Manchester will be back where they belong. Sometimes it takes time, but I still believe," he added.

Thus, it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds for Ronaldo, also for Neymar, in the coming few weeks.

UEFA Nations League: Portugal thrash Czechs with two goals in five minutes

Portugal beat Switzerland 4-0 in the ongoing UEFA Nations League clash at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in Lisbon. In the one-sided encounter, Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice to have a memorable outing.

After William Carvalho opened the scoring for the Portuguese, Ronaldo followed suit and struck his first goal in the 35th minute. The five-time Ballon D'or winner found himself on the scoresheet once again, just after four minutes, as Portugal were 3-0 up at the time of the half-time interval. Later, Joao Cancelo scored in the 68th minute as Portugal romped past the hapless Swiss line-up.

It was after Portugal's second goal and the first of the evening for superstar Ronaldo that the cameras focused on his mother Dolores Aveiro. She was in attendance and stood up to applaud her son after he joined the scoring sheet and extended his lead as the top goal-scorer ever in men's international football (118* goals). Aveiro, a proud mother, was left in tears seeing Ronaldo's blitz. Here's the video:

Cristiano Ronaldo's mother in tears after her son scores in Portugal's 4-0 win vs Switzerland - Watch

Portugal striker Ricardo Horta grabbed a late equaliser to earn his side a 1-1 draw with Spain in their Nations League opener at Estadio Benito Villamarin on Thursday. Alvaro Morata had given Spain the lead but Horta`s goal ensured the great rivals drew for the fourth time in a row. Portugal have not won a competitive game against Spain since 2004 and have never beaten them on Spanish soil. "It tastes good because Spain is strong and we were playing away. It was a good result for Portugal," midfielder Bernardo Silva said. "We already knew them very well, but it`s tough to play against them."

Spain made a lively start in the League A Group Two match when midfielder Gavi had a chance from outside the box in the third minute but his effort was blocked. Portugal defender Pepe did well to stop midfielder Carlos Soler who was through on goal after receiving a precise low pass.

Morata put Spain ahead from close range following a fine passing movement involving midfielders Gavi and Pablo Sarabia in the 25th minute. "We didn`t finish it off, but we played a good game," Morata said. "We`ll see each other again. Soccer is like that, we have to look ahead."

The 29-year-old, hoping to play his first World Cup this year, is now three goals away from Raul`s national squad record of 61 across all age categories. "He`s not a player with stratospheric numbers, but everything Morata gives us in attack and defence," Spain coach Luis Enrique said. "It was a match similar to the previous ones. We could have won, but we could also have lost."

Portugal had opportunities to equalise through forward Rafael Leao and striker Andre Silva before halftime but both narrowly missed the target. Fernando Santos` side were once more close to levelling just before the hour mark after Leao received a pass from Silva and defender Diego Llorente failed to block his strike, but goalkeeper Unai Simon stretched to deny him.

Morata, meanwhile, had another good chance which went just wide of left post in the 64th minute before he was substituted. Substitute Horta equalised for Portugal eight minutes from time, leaving the Spanish defence behind as he latched on to a precise cross from defender Joao Cancelo inside the area and placed a shot into the middle of Simon`s goal.

Fans of both sides were able to enjoy a lively game which had caused the Spanish national team`s website to crash when tickets went on sale last week. The last positive result in the fixture was Spain`s victory on penalties at the 2012 European Championship and their last two friendly meetings finished goalless.

Both sides play three more Nations League games in the next 10 days. Spain travel to Switzerland between two matches against the Czech Republic while Portugal host the Czechs and face Switzerland twice.
Spain and Portugal will meet again on Sept. 27, in their last group fixture.
