The case of Madeleine McCann, a British girl who vanished 16 years ago at the age of three from a holiday apartment in Portugal, resurfaced this week to dominate global coverage as Portuguese authorities restarted their search for her.

The police conducted the search, which entered its third day on Thursday (May 25), in the Algarve area of Portugal, where the minor went missing in 2007 while on holiday with her parents and siblings.

The search had been requested by German officials and was being carried out in the presence of British authorities, according to the police.

Officers are scouring an area near the Arade Dam, some 30 miles from the beach hamlet of Praia da Luz, where the family was on holiday.

According to local media, the location was visited by a German man who has been mentioned as a suspect in the case. Hans Christian Wolters, a German prosecutor, told NDR that "we just have some indications that we might find evidence there," as reported by the New York Times.

The searches have reignited a case that has gripped Europe for years, spurring a multinational search effort and become the topic of books, front pages, and a Netflix documentary series, as well as endless conjecture, false hopes, and tips.

How did Madeleine disappear?

Madeleine's parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, stated they left Madeleine and her siblings, two-year-old twins, in their holiday apartment while they dined at a nearby restaurant.

When Madeleine's father checked on the kids at 9 p.m., they were all there, but when his wife checked on them about an hour later, Madeleine was gone. Soon after, a search began, although it yielded few substantial leads.

The girl's disappearance sparked an outpouring of public attention and sadness comparable to the British national mourning following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, with Madeleine's face emblazoned on "Missing" posters and T-shirts.

An early inquiry by Portuguese police yielded no tangible evidence but generated significant condemnation because Madeleine's parents were labelled as suspects. They were formally cleared in 2008.

In 2020, German prosecutors stated unequivocally that they did not expect to locate Madeleine alive, and that fresh evidence led them to think that the girl was most likely the victim of a homicide.

Who is the suspect?

It was unclear why the additional searches were launched, but German officials said in 2020 that a German sex offender was being investigated on suspicion of murder. They did not identify him, but German news outlets recognised him as Christian B.

From 1995 until 2007, the suspect resided in the Algarve area of Portugal on and off. He has a criminal record for child sexual abuse, and he was already in a German jail at the time of his identification for an unrelated sexual crime and narcotics offences. According to a German prosecutor, the suspect made a profit not just from drug peddling but also from working in restaurants, selling old automobiles, and stealing from hotel rooms and holiday houses.

After making a public plea on the 10th anniversary of Madeleine's abduction in 2017, British authorities announced they got their first information concerning the suspect. He has never been charged with any charges in connection with her disappearance, and he has consistently denied any participation. The Portuguese police made him an official suspect in 2022.

In recent years, British media have been filled with interviews with people who have known the suspect in an attempt to piece together helpful information.

What about previous search operations?

Hundreds of people have helped the family search for Madeleine all around the world.

The joint effort by German and Portuguese officials is the first formal search in the dam region, however in 2008, Marcos Arago Correia, a Portuguese lawyer unrelated to the case, engaged professional divers to explore the area after receiving some clues.

In 2014, British police searched scrubland near the resort where Madeleine went missing for several days as part of Operation Grange, but discovered no evidence.

On May 3, Madeleine’s family gathered to commemorate the 16th anniversary of her disappearance. “Still missing ……. still very much missed,” her family wrote in a statement. “We await a breakthrough,” it added.

The recently elected Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has garnered criticism over his stance on the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine and said he does not want to “please anyone” with his views about the conflict, on Saturday (April 22), amid his five-day visit to Portugal.

What did Lula say in Lisbon?

The statement came after he arrived a day prior, in Portugal, and was faced with protests as many stood waving Ukrainian flags and holding photographs depicting conflict atrocities outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon.

Lula’s stance has not only angered the people in Lisbon but also the West and Kyiv for suggesting Ukraine and Russia are to blame for the conflict that began over a year ago. Addressing the press in the Portuguese capital, on Saturday, beginning his first visit to Europe after being elected president he called for a “negotiated” settlement between Kyiv and Moscow.

“While my government condemns the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity, we support a negotiated political solution to the conflict,” said Lula, following a meeting with the Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. He added, “Brazil does not want to take part in this war. Brazil wants to create peace.”

Last week, the Brazilian president faced criticism after he said the United States and its European allies should stop supplying arms to Ukraine as they are prolonging the war. “If you are not making peace, you are contributing to war,” said Lula.

Subsequently, the White House accused him of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”, while the Ukrainian government has criticised the Brazilian president for treating "the victim and the aggressor” the same way.

Protests in Lisbon over Lula’s visit

Portugal is a founding member of NATO and also sent military aid to Ukraine while the country’s president has previously said that Kyiv had the right to defend itself. On Saturday, Rebelo de Sousa also acknowledged that Portugal has a “different position” on the ongoing conflict adding that “for a road to peace to become a possibility, Ukraine must first have the right to respond to the invasion.”

The capital city of Portugal witnessed protests, on Friday, after many gathered outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon over Lula’s recent remarks.

A Ukrainian refugee named Yana Kolomiiets who was among the protesters and had been in Portugal for four months and said she felt “terrible” after hearing Lula’s comments last week, reported Reuters. The 27-year-old also said, “It has made me so upset because I don't know how the president of Brazil can support (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…this killer.”

Brazil wants to create peace.” Last week, the Brazilian president faced criticism after he said the United States and its European allies should stop supplying arms to Ukraine as they are prolonging the war. “If you are not making peace, you are contributing to war,” said Lula. Subsequently, the White House accused him of “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”, while the Ukrainian government has criticised the Brazilian president for treating "the victim and the aggressor” the same way. Protests in Lisbon over Lula’s visit Portugal is a founding member of NATO and also sent military aid to Ukraine while the country’s president has previously said that Kyiv had the right to defend itself. On Saturday, Rebelo de Sousa also acknowledged that Portugal has a “different position” on the ongoing conflict adding that “for a road to peace to become a possibility, Ukraine must first have the right to respond to the invasion.” The capital city of Portugal witnessed protests, on Friday, after many gathered outside the Brazilian embassy in Lisbon over Lula’s recent remarks. A Ukrainian refugee named Yana Kolomiiets who was among the protesters and had been in Portugal for four months and said she felt “terrible” after hearing Lula’s comments last week, reported Reuters. The 27-year-old also said, “It has made me so upset because I don't know how the president of Brazil can support (Russian President Vladimir) Putin…this killer.” (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
A pioneering auction will be launched by Portugal in the second half of 2023 for rights to put on sale hydrogen that will be injected into the national gas grid, which some perceive as a key step to kickstart the fledgling hydrogen market of Europe.

Portugal announced on Thursday, February 16, that it will end its controversial Golden Visa programme for new foreign property buyers. The announcement came in wake of housing crisis in Portugal, which is among the poorest countries in Western Europe. Apart from scrapping the Golden Visa scheme, Portugal also announced a ban on new licences for Airbnb and other short-term holiday rentals. Foreign real estate buyers, who already have golden visas and want to renew their visas, will now only be eligible for it if their properties are used as their own home, or if these units are placed in the long-term rental market.

The house and rental prices in Portugal have skyrocketed and more than 50 per cent of workers earned less than 1000 euros per month last year. In Lisbon alone, the rent prices jumped a whopping 37 per cent in 2022. Prime Minister Antonio Costa said at a press conference in Lisbon on Thursday following a cabinet meeting that to fight real estate production, Portugal will "eliminate the issuance of new golden visas".

Portugal is a dominantly tourism-dependent economy, and when policies like Golden Visa encourage wealthy foreigners to invest in the country, its locals find it hard to rent or buy a house. Portugal’s 8.3 per cent inflation rate has worsened the problem further.

PM Costa said that the crisis was now affecting all families, not just the most vulnerable. Though it is not clear, when will these measures come into effect. All these measures will cost the Portuguese government at least 900 million euros ($962.19 million) and some of them would be approved next month and others will be voted on by lawmakers.

A new system would be introduced to regulate rent increases, PM Costa added, and the government will offer tax incentives to landlords who convert tourism properties into houses for locals to rent.

New licences for tourism accommodations, like Airbnbs, will be prohibited, though rural areas with less population will be exempted from this measure.

The Social Democrats said the measures were an “attack” on the rights of property owners and businesses.

The State would rent vacant houses direct from landlords for a period of five years and put them on the rental market.

What is the Portugal Golden Visa scheme?

The Portugal Golden Visa is an immigrant investor programme by the government that grants residency in the country to people who invest in properties worth at least 500,000 euros ($532,215) or create 10 jobs in Portugal. The scheme began in 2012 and by May 2020 has been credited with investments of over 6.8 billion euros ($ 7.2 billion) from over 20,000 persons.

New measures and Digital Nomad Visa

Housing groups argue that measures would mean little if the government continued to promote other policies to attract wealthy foreigners like Digital Nomad Visas introduced in October. It allows foreigners with high monthly incomes from remote work to live and work from home in Portugal without paying any local taxes.

How people are reacting to new measures announced by Portugal

At a small housing protest in Lisbon, 23-year-old activist Andreia Galvao accused the government of failing to live up to the promise it made to address the housing crisis in the past.

"The goal was that by 2024 all Portuguese would have access to quality housing, it doesn't look like that will happen," she said. "The situation is dramatic."

The Housing is a right group said the measures do not change the "system in place" in which large real estate investment funds control a significant chunk of the market.

Also Read | Israel passes law to strip 'convicted terrorists' of their citizenship Portugal is a dominantly tourism-dependent economy, and when policies like Golden Visa encourage wealthy foreigners to invest in the country, its locals find it hard to rent or buy a house. Watch | Portugal considers stopping its 'Golden Visa' × The Social Democrats said the measures were an “attack” on the rights of property owners and businesses. New measures and Digital Nomad Visa Housing groups argue that measures would mean little if the government continued to promote other policies to attract wealthy foreigners like Digital Nomad Visas introduced in October. It allows foreigners with high monthly incomes from remote work to live and work from home in Portugal without paying any local taxes. How people are reacting to new measures announced by Portugal At a small housing protest in Lisbon, 23-year-old activist Andreia Galvao accused the government of failing to live up to the promise it made to address the housing crisis in the past. "The goal was that by 2024 all Portuguese would have access to quality housing, it doesn't look like that will happen," she said. "The situation is dramatic." The Housing is a right group said the measures do not change the "system in place" in which large real estate investment funds control a significant chunk of the market. Portugal to end Golden Visa, curtail Airbnb rentals to address local housing crisis

At least 4,815 children have faced sexual abuse at the hands of Portugal's Catholic clergy in the last 70 years, as per findings of a commission. The youngest victim was a two-year-old. Priyanka Sharma explains.

Gravitas: Massive Church abuse scandal rocks Portugal

An investigation by an independent commission recently has unearthed the dirty face of child abuse at the hands of Catholic clergy in Portugal. The horrifying testimonies of the survivors become the ground of the commission's inquiry. The commission with the help of a large network of victims was able to make a deeper cut into finding out the ongoing paedophilia in the staunchly Catholic country.

The Portuguese inquiry which was commissioned by the church revealed that there are about 5,000 children who have become victims of child abuse since 1950. The report comes after the testimony of over 500 survivors last year. Commission head, Pedro Strecht, responded to the inquiry findings saying “This testimony allows us to establish a much larger network of victims, at least 4,815."

To do away with this gruesome malice, the country's bishop will reportedly convene in March. As per reports, the time for the majority of the offenders has passed its limit for bringing about the charges but 25 of these cases have been transferred to the prosecution service.

Victims' voices

Many victims have come forward to unlock their pain in front of the commission and recount the horror they have lived. A 43-year-old woman, who spoke on the condition of anonymity has alleged that a priest raped her during confession when she was just a 17-year-old novice nun.

The woman revealed that she kept it a secret for a long time because of her deep-seated fear of speaking out against the clergies in a largely Catholic country. At one point, she said she mustered up the courage to bring culprits to justice but no one did anything to help her.

She expressed her anger saying that a bishop asking for forgiveness for his sins does not hold any meaning for her. “We don’t know if they mean it," she said adding, “The church needs to cleanse itself."

But this is not just Europe...

The child abuse cases which has now come to light in Portugal are nothing new as these accusations have been emerging every now and then from all across the world. Data exposes the magnanimity of the situation which can make anyone sit up and notice. The United States, too, have its own share of the burden when it comes to tackling these child abuse scandals carried out by the priests and the Catholic churches.

For instance, the legal bearing of the lawsuits got pretty real for the Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego. As per reports, now the diocese may soon become bankrupt as it stares down “staggering" legal costs thanks to about 400 lawsuits against its priests for allegedly sexually abusing children.

The Diocese in a statement said that a whopping $550 million in legal charges are against priests who are not presently serving.

All these cases, as per Diocese, were filed after a 2019 bill which make it possible for child sexual abuse victims in California to no longer face deadlines to file civil claims. At the time, California State Representative Dawn Addis in her remarks said that it's "time to end this arbitrary and cruel time limit on justice."

What is the new law?

Under the previous law, minor sexual assault survivors only had until their 40th birthday to seek justice in civil court however with the new bill the time limit is now dropped. It has opened floodgates as most of the alleged abuses were reportedly cited in the suits that took place 50 to 75 years ago. These child abuse victims just do not come forward by that age sometimes.

The data suggests that in New York, nearly 11,000 cases were filed in state courts seeking to hold Catholic dioceses responsible for sexual abuse by clergy. And it is interesting to note that like in California mass sexual abuse litigations are being filed all across US.

A total of 23 states, along with two territories and Washington, D.C., have passed laws that suspend statutes of limitations for sexual-abuse victims. However, there is one more loophole, the way the bankruptcy claims-filing procedures are.

The loopholes in the Bankruptcy filings

Judges who look at these filings in the Bankruptcy courts sometimes set up their own deadlines. This becomes an issue because when the victim misses the deadline they get nothing or they get only some of the claim from the accumulated amounts for unknown claimants.

In December 2019, Pope Francis in a bid to crack down on sexual abuse cases abolished the rule of pontifical secrecy. The changes let go of a practice of keeping silent on those who report sexual abuse or allege they have been a victim. At the time, Pope Francis vowed zero tolerance saying he will come down heavily on stopping the abuse. Even so, there are growing voices which continues to call for more to put an end to it all.

EXPLAINED: The ugly face of Child sexual abuse in Catholic church

Thousands of teachers in Portugal took to the streets of the capital city of Lisbon on Saturday (February 11) in the latest round of demonstrations demanding higher pay and better working conditions. The teachers have been calling for an improvement in tenure and career progression, and salaries to keep pace with inflation, a report by a news agency AFP said. The National Federation of Teachers (FENPROF), which is the main union of the teaching profession, said that over 150,000 teachers took part in the rally.

FENPROF Secretary General Mario Nogueira said, "This is probably the biggest demonstration of teachers." Augusto Figueiredo, a technology teacher from Rio Maior, told AFP, "We are outraged," adding, miserable salaries, discriminatory appraisals, and inhuman schedules were the reality of the teaching profession at present.

"We're really tired, no one is listening to us, this government needs to listen to us," Joao Tristao, a sports teacher, told the news agency on Saturday.

Apart from the above demands, the protesting teachers also want their real working hours to be taken into account. Maria da Luz Ribeiro, an English teacher, told AFP that working time had to be released as she expressed concerns about the future of teachers and schools in Portugal. "I was forced to work longer to try to improve my pension," Riberio, who stopped working last year, added.

Saturday's national demonstration in Lisbon comes after a series of protests and rotating strikes, which have led to the closure of schools. Earlier, Portugal's Education Minister Joao Costa said that negotiations with teachers' unions were ongoing and that they hoped to reach an agreement soon.

Portugal is one of Western Europe's poorest countries. Citing government data, a report by the news agency Reuters on Saturday said that more than 50% of workers earned less than 1,000 euros per month last year and the minimum wage is 760 euros per month.

The protests are not only limited to teachers. Nurses have been striking lack of career advancement and doctors are expected to walk out for two days in March, Reuters reported. On Thursday, the CGTP, which is Portugal's biggest umbrella union, held protests and strikes across the country against rising prices and urged the government to increase the pay of workers.

Dogs bring joy to any household they are brought in. Most dogs live for 10-15 years. But a dog in Portugal, at a grand old age of 30, has been named oldest dog ever by the Guinness Book of World Records. The dog, Bobbi, broke the record that stood for nearly a century.

Bobbi lives with Costa family in the village of Conqueiros in Portugal. On February 1, Bobbi was 30 years and 226 days old.

The previous record for oldest living dog was made by Bluey, a dog in Australia who died at the age of 29 years and five months.

Bobbi's age has been validated by Portuguese government's database.

Leonel Costa, Bobbi's owner, was eight years old when Bobbi was born. He told BBC that since the family at the time had too many animals, puppies born along with Bobbi had to be put down.

Leonel and his brothers then hid Bobbi from their parents. The pup was eventually discovered and the family decided to keep it.

Portugal: Thousands of teachers from across the country protest in Lisbon

Video footage released by Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr showed Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo arriving in Riyadh and greeting fans late Monday (January 2) after joining the club on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The 37-year-old Ronaldo is expected to be formally introduced by his new club at a news conference scheduled for Tuesday (January 3) after a medical exam. Ronaldo departed Old Trafford last month following an explosive television interview in which the forward said he felt betrayed by the club and did not respect their Dutch manager Erik ten Hag.

Ronaldo, a former Real Madrid player, reportedly disagreed with Santos' choice to sit him against Switzerland and Morocco. However, his fiancée Georgina Rodriguez criticised Santos for putting him on the bench for the first half of the match against Morocco. Ronaldo bowed his head in defeat and began the arduous journey to the tunnel at Al Thumama Stadium while wiping his eyes.

From the beginning of the World Cup in Qatar, Ronaldo has been the subject of several controversies. After a contentious interview with Piers Morgan that resulted in the termination of his contract with Premier League team Manchester United, he landed in Qatar. Ronaldo during the interview confirmed this will definitely be his last should Portugal lift the title. Naturally, Ronaldo's previous squad was the primary focus of the discussion, and when questioned about the Red Devils since his return in 2021, he was blunt. “At United, the progress was zero, in my opinion," Ronaldo said. It did stir a lot of controversies and now it will be interesting to watch which club will sign Ronaldo after the World Cup games in Qatar.
