A tourist sparked a major bomb scare after he confused Portuguese words for pomegranate and grenade while ordering fruit juice from a restaurant in Lisbon city.

According to the Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manhã, the 36-year-old Russian speaker from Azerbaijan was using a translation app that erroneously gave out the wrong word for pomegranate.

When he showed the wrong translated word while ordering, the waiter thought that he was carrying a grenade and threatening to blow up the place, following which the police were called in.

The man, whose name has not been revealed, soon found himself surrounded by a group of armed police.

Five police officers then immobilised him, cuffed his hands, and escorted him to a police station for interrogation, the newspaper reported.

A video that went viral online purportedly shows the man being forced to lie face down on the ground before five officers approach him and handcuffed him.

Tourist sparks bomb scare in Portugal by confusing words ‘grenade’ and ‘pomegranate’

Portuguese police have extended an apology to the parents of Madeleine McCann for the way they conducted the investigation into the three-year-old's disappearance. The parents were initially listed as suspects and questioned by Portugal police after Madeleine went missing from a holiday complex in the Algarve in May 2007. The case remains unsolved.

As reported by BBC Panorama, a delegation of senior officers from Portugal travelled to London earlier this year to meet with Gerry McCann, Madeleine's father. During the meeting, they expressed their regret for the way detectives investigated the case and treated the McCann family.

The McCann family's ordeal began in September 2007 when, four months after Madeleine disappeared, Kate and Gerry McCann were named "arguidos," or suspects, in the Portuguese investigation.

Both were subjected to questioning by detectives who believed they had staged an abduction and concealed Madeleine's body. Kate McCann reportedly claimed she was offered a deal to admit to covering up her daughter's death in exchange for a reduced sentence. Although their arguido status was lifted in 2008, the McCanns remained under suspicion in Portugal for years.

Goncalo Amaral and legal disputes

Goncalo Amaral, the senior detective leading the case at the time, was later removed from the investigation but went on to write a book accusing the McCanns of involvement in their daughter's disappearance.

The McCanns pursued a libel case against him, which was ultimately dismissed by the Portuguese Supreme Court. They later appealed to the European Court of Human Rights but lost their challenge in September 2022.

Online campaigns and ongoing investigations

The couple has also faced harsh online campaigns accusing them of causing Madeleine's death and attempting to cover it up.

Portuguese police have now acknowledged that their initial investigation into Madeleine's disappearance was not handled properly.

They cited insufficient importance given to missing children at the time and a lack of appreciation for the McCanns' status as foreigners in an unfamiliar environment.

Portuguese police also disclosed that they have provided support to the German authorities who suspect that a 46-year-old German national, Christian Brueckner, was responsible for Madeleine McCann's disappearance.

Hans Christian Wolters, one of the German prosecutors, welcomed the Portuguese apology and mentioned ongoing developments in the McCann case.

Christian Brueckner lived near the Praia da Luz resort where the McCann family vacationed and spent time in the area from 2000 to 2017. He was formally named a suspect by Portuguese prosecutors in 2022. Currently, he is serving a seven-year prison sentence in Germany for drug trafficking and the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old woman in the same area where Madeleine disappeared.

Football: France, Belgium and Portugal qualify for Euro 2024 with last gasp wins

A rather unprecedented climate trial is currently underway at the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Strasbourg, France after six young people from areas in Portugal ravaged by wildfires took 32 European governments to court. Dubbed as the largest climate case ever to be heard by ECHR, the young people argue that the failure of the said nations to act fast enough on climate change is a violation of their climate rights.

The young Portuguese applicants, aged between 11 and 24, with the support of the British-based Global Legal Action Network (GLAN), filed the case in September 2020 against the 27 EU member states as well as Britain, Switzerland, Norway, Russia and Turkey. They are seeking a legally binding order that would force the states to act on climate issues.

While the hearing started early in the day and is scheduled to end on the same day, a ruling is not expected before the first half of 2024.

"Today we will stand up at the ECHR to argue for our rights and our future," the applicants wrote on social media ahead of the trial.

Rui Pinto (34), the Portuguese hacker whose shocking revelations on "Football Leaks" website shook European football, was convicted by a court in Lisbon on Monday (September 11) of nine crimes. He was handed a four-year suspended prison sentence.

The panel of three judges found Rui Pinto guilty of five counts of unauthorised entry into computer systems, one count of attempted extortion, and three counts of intercepting correspondence for accessing emails, as per reports in Portuguese media.

Pinto was convicted of hacking computers that belonged to Doyen sports investment fund, the Portuguese attorney general’s office and a Lisbon law firm. The judges said that it was not proven that Pinto hacked a website that belonged to the Portuguese soccer federation.

Pinto’s disclosures embarrassed star players, top clubs and influential agents between 2015-18 and helped drive official investigations across Europe.

The website made public the information about the transfer fees and salaries of football stars such as Neymar, Radmael Falcao and Gareth Bale. The website also accused clubs like Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain of flouting European soccer's spending rules.

During the trial, Pinto admitted he was behind the information that was published on the website which was set up in 2015. He, however, argued that he is a whistleblower and not a criminal. He added: “My work as a whistleblower is finished.”

He said he acted in public interest and not for personal gain. The court found him guilty of extortion in his dealings with Doyen.

His lawyers argued that Pinto had helped authorities inside and outside Europe to tackle crime in the sport.

They said that Pinto was helping authorities in France, Belgium, Switzerland and Malta in their soccer investigations.

After he was arrested, Pinto was in pre-trial detention in Lisbon. This included seven months in isolation. He was released after he started to co-operate with the police and entering a witness protection program.

He added: “My work as a whistleblower is finished.” He said he acted in public interest and not for personal gain. Portuguese hacker gets four-year sentence in 'Football Leaks' trial

A small coastal town in Portugal has become the talking point on internet after viral videos showed red wine spilling through its streets on Sunday (September 10).

The town of São Lourenco do Bairro and its streets were painted red after two tanks owned by Levira Distillery – a local winemaker, carrying a whopping 600,000 gallons of the booze, suddenly gave way, according to a report in the New York Post.

The locals, as surprised as the netizens, looked on with bewilderment as the wine, nearly enough to fill an Olympic swimming pool, flowed down a steep hill and onto the myriad streets of the town.

The spill, although accidental, was so massive that the local authorities had to trigger an environmental alert. They were later forced to divert the wine to stop it from contaminating the nearby Certima River. The Anadia Fire Department stepped in, blocked off the road and diverted the wine into a nearby field.

Bruno Fernandes ran the show for Portugal as they romped to a record 9-0 win over Luxembourg on Monday without suspended talisman and all-time top goalscorer Cristiano Ronaldo.

Roberto Martinez's side have now won all six of their qualifying games, without conceding a single goal and scoring 24 themselves, with Monday's scoreline being the country's largest-ever victory.

Portugal lead the Group J standings, five points clear of Slovakia in second place, whom they beat in Bratislava on Friday. Luxembourg are third, three points behind Slovakia.

Manchester United playmaker Fernandes, who scored Portugal's winner against Slovakia, laid on three goals as the Selecao filled their boots and scored one himself.
Goncalo Ramos, Diogo Jota and Goncalo Inacio struck two goals each, while Ricardo Horta and Joao Felix also scored.

Martinez, who replaced Fernando Santos after the Qatar World Cup, has a 100 per cent record at the helm to date.
"We are still at the beginning of a new era with a new coach and we are still taking on board the coach's ideas," said Jota.

"Today we set a reference point match (to look at in) the future."

Sporting Lisbon defender Inacio sent the hosts ahead in the 12th minute with a header from Fernandes' exquisite cross with the outside of his foot.

Pope Francis wrapped the last day of his Portugal visit with an open-air Mass before a huge crowd on Sunday (August 6), where he also closed the international festival of Catholic Youth with his own “I have a dream” speech, but for peace, particularly in Ukraine. As many as 1.5 million people attended the service at a waterside park near Lisbon, said the Vatican.

About the Mass on Sunday

According to the Vatican, the Mass, on Sunday, took place at the Parque Tejo park on the eastern outskirts of the Portuguese capital.

This comes as Portugal, like much of Europe, is witnessing soaring temperatures but did it not stop the faithful from gathering in large numbers, many of whom reportedly slept outside in sleeping bags or floor mats after attending a vigil there on Saturday night.

The pilgrims were seen protecting themselves from the blazing sun with umbrellas and makeshift tents. The event took place while Portugal’s state weather agency had issued a ‘red alert’ – the highest level – in Lisbon, on Sunday with the temperatures expected to hit 41 degrees Celsius.

Pope’s speech

The crowd was seen waving national flags and cheering as the 86-year-old pope arrived. During his speech, he urged them to take the fraternal experiences from the six-day jamboree back home and apply them to their daily lives.

Francis also thanked the youth for taking part in the festival and called them “the hope of a different world”. The pope is set to return to Rome, on Sunday evening, after an event to thank volunteers at the World Youth Day festival.

“Dear friends, allow me, this old man, to share with you young people a dream that I carry within me: it is the dream of peace, the dream of young people praying for peace, living in peace and building a peaceful future,” said the pope, during his speech, as quoted by Reuters.

He added, “As you return home, please continue to pray for peace. What is more, you are a sign of peace for the world, showing how different nationalities, languages and histories can unite instead of divide. You are the hope of a different world.”

The pope then went on to ask the young people to think about those who could not make it to the event due to the world’s many armed conflicts and wars and said, “In thinking of this continent, I feel great sorrow for beloved Ukraine, which continues to suffer greatly.”

Francis, who has repeatedly called for peace in Ukraine, also met with a delegation of 15 young people from the war-torn country.

Pope Francis’ visit

Ahead of Sunday’s Mass, Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa told public television RTP, “It has been an extraordinary moment of joy, of energy, with remarkable speeches by the Holy Father, with very important messages.”

During his visit, the pope also went to a community centre in Lisbon’s impoverished Serafina neighbourhood and prayed at the Catholic Shrine of Fatima with about 200,000 people at the site where the Church says the Virgin Mary appeared to three shepherd children in 1917.

On the first day of his visit, Francis met with 13 victims of clerical abuse at the Holy See’s diplomatic mission in the capital city. “The meeting was held in an atmosphere of intense listening and lasted more than an hour,” said the Vatican, at the time.

Next World Youth Day in South Korea

At the end of the Mass, on Sunday, Pope Francis also announced that the South Korean capital city, Seoul, will be the host of the next edition of the World Youth Day global gathering in 2027.

On Monday, Prime Minister Antonio Costa called it “the biggest international event” Portugal has ever hosted. World Youth Day, an event devised by the late Pope John Paul to form young Catholics in their teens or early 20s takes place every two to three years in different cities.

This will be the first event, since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and also the 86-year-old Pope’s first trip since intestinal surgery, last month.

Child sexual abuse in Catholic church

Pope Francis’ visit to Lisbon comes less than six months after the investigation by an independent commission led to the release of a damning report about child abuse at the hands of Catholic clergy in Portugal. According to the report, at least 4,815 minors were sexually abused over 70 years by the clergy – mostly priests.

This Is Our Memorial, an abuse awareness group, ahead of the pope’s visit said that while nothing can “repair” the lives and experiences of the victims, “we can and should do is remember them. Give them a voice. So that what happened never happens again.”

The group is planning to place outdoor signs to raise awareness about clergy sexual abuse. Additionally, a separate protest group, as per Reuters, has planned a demonstration in Lisbon’s Martim Moniz Square, on Friday.

In a press conference on Monday, Lisbon patriarch Manuel Clemente said that the Church was fully committed to addressing the issue.

Will Pope Francis meet with abuse victims?

Previous reports have suggested that Pope Francis will meet with abuse victims, but the meeting has not been confirmed by the Vatican. “This is to facilitate the process of healing, which is always personal, intimate and requires time to listen,” said Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni, as quoted by Reuters.

The Vatican has also indicated that if the meeting were to take place, it would be announced after the event to ensure privacy.

‘Walk of Shame’ installation

While Lisbon and its officials are in the midst of rolling out the red carpet for Pope Francis, the country’s famed street artist, Bordalo II, rolled out a carpet he called the “Walk of Shame”. The artist broke into a Lisbon venue where Francis will celebrate a mass next week and rolled out a massive carpet of oversized banknotes.

Bordalo II, whose real name is Artur Bordalo, known for his political art pieces often made from garbage, called his latest installation a “Walk of Shame” and criticised how much the state has spent on the event.

The images of the installation shared on Instagram feature huge 500-euro ($551) notes and even a video of how it was rolled out on the stage with the caption, “At a time when many people are fighting to keep their homes, their work and their dignity, millions of public funds have been invested to sponsor the tour of the Italian multinational.”

According to official estimates, the upcoming event will cost at least 161 million euros ($171 million) which is being paid for by the government, the Catholic Church, the city council of Lisbon and nearby Loures, reported Reuters.

Pope Francis’ upcoming visit to Portugal marked by controversies: Here’s why

Next week, Pope Francis is embarking on a five-day visit to Portugal, a country still grappling with a Catholic Church sex scandal that came to light earlier this year.

The Pope's arrival in Lisbon on August 2 marks the 42nd international trip of his papacy and the fourth World Youth Day, a significant gathering of young Catholics held in various cities worldwide every few years.

However, this occasion is overshadowed by the ongoing struggles of the weakened Catholic Church in Portugal and the broader developed world.

What is Portugal's church sex scandal?

In February, an independent commission published a disturbing report revealing that over 4,800 children had been abused by Catholic clergy members in Portugal since 1950.

Shockingly, the commission's chairman suggested that this number was likely just the beginning, hinting at a much deeper and widespread issue. The revelation sent shockwaves throughout the nation's Catholic community.

Meeting between the Pope and sex scandal victims

Although the primary goal of World Youth Day is to inspire and invigorate a new generation of young Catholics, Pope Francis faces a significant challenge in achieving this without addressing the dark chapter of the Church's past.

Traditionally, World Youth Days have been celebrated with enthusiasm, featuring concerts, vibrant youth festivals, and daily catechesis and prayer services. However, the shadow of the abuse scandal looms large over this event, forcing the Portuguese Church and Pope Francis to encounter this reality head-on.

In June, it was announced that the Pope would meet with victims of clergy abuse during his visit, although the specific details of the meeting have not been disclosed publicly.

Purpose of the Pope's visit

Filipe d'Avillez, a religion reporter in Portugal, believes that for Pope Francis' message in Portugal to be effective, it must resonate with both the victims of abuse and the bishops.

For survivors of abuse, d'Avillez argues, they must receive "encouragement and assurance that if they step forward and summon the courage to file complaints with diocesan abuse commissions there will be fair and swift action."

On the other hand, he believes that the Pope must call for transparency from the bishops, as many dioceses seem to be handling these cases with a lack of openness, returning to their old ways.

Before the commission's eye-opening report, senior Portuguese church officials had downplayed the extent of abuse, claiming that only a few isolated cases existed.

Now, crucial issues such as reparations for victims and the potential suspension of around two dozen active clergy members named in the panel's comprehensive 500-page report are bulking larger on the Pope's agenda when he lands in Portugal next week.

Massive church sex scandal comes to haunt Pope's visit to Portugal next week

Portugal's Telma Encarnacao scored one goal and set up the other in a 2-0 win over fellow Women's World Cup debutants Vietnam, sending the Southeast Asian side out of the tournament at Waikato Stadium on Thursday. Portugal are third in Group E with three points and will face the U.S. in their final group game in Auckland while Vietnam, yet to score or pick up a point, take on the Netherlands in Dunedin. Both matches will be played on Tuesday.

The U.S. are level on four points with the Netherlands but top the table on goal difference after the teams drew 1-1 earlier on Thursday. Portugal coach Francisco Neto made seven changes to the team that lost 1-0 to the Netherlands in their Group E opener and the decision paid off as first-half goals from Encarnacao and Francisca Nazareth earned them a first-ever World Cup win.

Neto will be thrilled with Thursday's accomplished performance as Portugal dazzled under the floodlights - a stark contrast to their struggling first display - although the scoreline did not reflect their dominance. Encarnacao swept Portugal in front after seven minutes with a smart first-time finish from Lucia Alves' cross before turning provider for Nazareth, who fired the ball past goalkeeper Tran Thi Kim Thanh in the 21st minute.

Only 11 places separate the two teams in the world rankings, with Portugal sitting higher at 21, but the contest was one-sided and the Europeans were firmly on top throughout with five attempts on target in the first half alone. They could not add more gloss to the result, however, as Kim Thanh, who helped restrict holders the United States to three goals in Vietnam's opening defeat, was once again key in ensuring they did not concede more than two.

However, despite Kim Thanh's efforts, Vietnam struggled to create chances and managed only one shot on target in the match when Nguyen Thi Bich Thuy drew a save from Patricia Morais just before the break.

FIFA Women's World Cup: Portugal beat Vietnam 2-0 for first win in mega event

Pope Francis is scheduled to visit Portugal the next week. His trip coincides with World Youth Day, which is eagerly anticipated by young Catholics. However, a big sex scandal rocking the Portuguese Church casts a cloud over Pope Francis' visit. Pope Francis will travel to Portugal from August 5 to August 10 for his 42nd worldwide trip. His main objective is to uplift and enthuse a new generation of young Catholics, but until he addresses the troubling history of Portugal's Catholic church, this will be very challenging.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal in his 200th cap for Portugal as Roberto Martinez's side thumped 10-man Iceland 1-0 in the Euro 2024 qualifiers on June 20. The win ensured that Portugal remain unbeaten in Group J with 12 points from four games.

Portugal took advantage of the situation and started pressing for a goal. The moment came one minute before the regulation time whistle as Ronaldo sent the ball into the Icelandic goal post from a close range.

Portugal's Euro 2024 Qualifier match late Saturday night ended with a 3-0 victory against against Bosnia-Herzegovina. Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes scored one and two goals, respectively. The game, however, will be best remembered for Cristiano Ronaldo being lifted up in the air by a fan.

Ronaldo, one of the most famous athletes in the world, has a huge fan following. It was evident during the football match as a fan invaded the pitch to meet his hero. A video of the incident has been going viral on social media as well.
