Euro 2024: Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo confirms it's 'his last' tournament

Turkey reached the knockout phase at a major tournament for the first time in 16 years after a bad-tempered 2-1 win over a battling 10-man Czech Republic at Euro 2024 on Wednesday. Vincenzo Montella's Turkey finished second in Group F behind Portugal to progress, as the Czechs were eliminated despite a brave performance on a sweltering night in Hamburg.

"Tonight we just want to celebrate, we deserve it," said Italian Montella. "But starting tomorrow we want to continue to make history."

Georgia also went through as one of the best third-placed teams after a stunning 2-0 win over Portugal in the group's other final game, eliminating Hungary.

Turkey will face Austria in the last 16 in Leipzig on Tuesday, their first major tournament knockout match since the Euro 2008 semi-finals, when they were beaten by Germany.

The Czechs were reduced to 10 men in the 20th minute when Antonin Barak was given the earliest red card in Euros history, beating the unwanted record set by France's Eric Abidal in 2008. Barak's pair of bookings were two of 18 yellow cards shown in total, with Tomas Chory also shown red after the final whistle in ugly scenes.

Hakan Calhanoglu powered Turkey into a 51st-minute lead, but Tomas Soucek lashed in an equaliser midway through the second half.

A frantic finale to the game ensued as the Czech Republic pushed for the winner that would take them through, but Cenk Tosun ended their hopes on the counter-attack in added time.

There were ugly scenes at the final whistle as fans ran onto the pitch, with Czech forward Chory brandished a red card in the aftermath. "We are upset, everyone wanted to advance, we had the right mindset," said Soucek.

"It was terribly hard with 10 men, we didn't want to concede, then we did, we levelled and pushed them until the last minute but then we conceded another."

The Czechs started strongly despite the tens of thousands of Turkey fans jeering their every touch, with Lukas Provod forcing Mert Gunok into an early save with a deflected shot. They were especially dangerous from Vladimir Coufal's long throw-ins, one of which Robin Hranac headed over when unmarked.

But Turkey were given a huge boost as midfielder Barak caught Salih Ozcan by the halfway line and was shown a soft second yellow card. Key Czech striker Patrik Schick could only feature among the substitutes after picking up an injury in the draw with Georgia last week.

He was given a yellow card for protesting from the bench after Provod was felled by a flying challenge.

- Tempers fray -

Turkey winger Kenan Yildiz was fortunate to stay on the pitch, only receiving a yellow for a nasty tackle on Hranac before elbowing Coufal in the face without punishment as tempers threatened to boil over.

Montella's side were struggling to break down their opponents despite the man advantage and almost fell behind when David Jurasek was denied by Gunok after a quick counter-attack.

Knowing defeat could send them home with Georgia leading Portugal, Turkey started brightly after the break and released the pressure on themselves with a crucial opening goal.

Yildiz had an effort brilliantly saved by Jindrich Stanek, but the Czech keeper suffered an arm injury in making the stop, and with him struggling to get back into position, Calhanoglu drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

Stanek was immediately replaced by back-up Matej Kovar as part of a triple change. The Czechs became increasingly stretched as they went in search of the two goals they needed to stay in the tournament, and Turkey's teenage star Arda Guler failed to convert from barely three yards out.

But Soucek gave the Czechs hope when he fired home after Gunok spilt the ball following another Coufal hurl into the box. The goal survived a long VAR review for a possible foul on the embarrassed keeper and a handball, before being eventually awarded to set up a thrilling finish.

Ivan Hasek's Czech Republic threw as many players forward as possible but could not find a moment of magic.Instead, Turkey hit them on the break and substitute Tosun struck a fine finish into the far corner, before the match ended in fiery fashion.

GEORGIA MAKE HISTORY, STUN PORTUGAL TO PROCEED AHEAD

Georgia are through to the last 16 of Euro 2024 after Wednesday's 2-0 win over Portugal, a historic triumph in the former Soviet Republic's first appearance at a major international tournament. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia's fine finish with less than two minutes on the clock in Gelsenkirchen and Georges Mikautadze's 57th-minute penalty ensured Georgia would claim the greatest football victory in the Black Sea nation's history.

Georgia's players celebrated with their delirious fans long after the final whistle, after inflicting a first defeat since the 2022 World Cup on Portugal, and being rewarded for the sheer fun they have brought to the tournament.

Willy Sagnol's team qualify from Group F as one of the four best third-placed finishers and face a daunting clash with Spain, who won all their group games, on Sunday.

"We just made history, nobody would have believed that we would have made it happen by beating Portugal, but this is why we are a strong team," Kvaratskhelia told reporters. "If there is even one percent chance you can make it happen if you believe."

Portugal had already qualified for the next round as group winners and coach Roberto Martinez made eight changes from the team which swept Turkey aside to guarantee first place last weekend.

However, his team were on top for most of the match and looked likely to equalise before Antonio Silva, who gave the ball away for the first goal, was harshly penalised for light contact with Luka Lochoshvili to give away the decisive penalty.

"We were low intensity, we conceded early which is what Georgia needed and after that we weren't clear headed in our passing or finishing," Martinez told reporters. "We tried to score but couldn't, that gave Georgia heart and in the end it was a deserved win."

Regardless Portugal will face Slovenia on Monday and, saving any injuries, Martinez will have a mostly rested first XI to call upon.

Euro 2024: WATCH | Cristiano Ronaldo fans force delay in Portugal vs Turkiye game

Former Chelsea and England international Frank Lampard has revealed that he avoided Cristiano Ronaldo after bumping into the Portuguese star during a holiday earlier this year, seemingly out of physical embarrassment.

Speaking ahead of Portugal's opening Euro 2024 match against Czechia, Lampard shared the funny anecdote when he was staying in the same hotel as 39-year-old Ronaldo.

"I bumped into him on holiday a few months ago, I was in the same hotel on the beach and fortunately his sun spot each day was a little down from me," Lampard told BBC.

"I made sure to stay away from him because he was in incredible shape. So I gave him a little bit of distance. I pulled him over for a picture with my son because of the incredible player he's been and I quickly put my t-shirt on and had a nice picture with him," said Lampard.

While most athletes retired in their early thirties, Ronaldo is still going strong and representing his country at the highest level.

"I noticed he was going to the gym twice a day with his personal trainer. Just shows you his dedication to what he does," said Lampard.

"I was sipping a beer watching him and gave him a ripple of applause as he walked back!"

Cesc Fabregas, who was on the panel alongside Lampard also applauded Ronaldo for his longevity in the sport and attributed his mentality as the factor that separated the five-time Ballon d'Or winner from the rest.

"I was sipping a beer watching him and gave him a ripple of applause as he walked back!" Cesc Fabregas, who was on the panel alongside Lampard also applauded Ronaldo for his longevity in the sport and attributed his mentality as the factor that separated the five-time Ballon d'Or winner from the rest. Ronaldo put up a tidy performance playing up front as some of the big chances created by him were thwarted by the opposition goalkeeper. Ater the match, Czechia manager, Ivan Hasek, paid a glowing tribute to Ronaldo by calling him one of the greatest to have ever graced the sport. "It's amazing how dangerous he is. He showed what a genius he is. I take my hat off to him. He's one of the best players in history,” said Hasek.
The Portuguese is the leading goal scorer in men’s international football with 128 goals in 204 official matches. He will be playing his final Euros, having featured in six previous editions, winning one (2016) and finishing runners-up (2004) in another.

The Al-Nassr star scored twice in the friendly match against Iceland on Tuesday (Jun 11) to indicate he was all prepared for the big tournament.

"I know I don't have many years of football left. It's a gift to play year after year, after 35. I'm 39 and every year is about enjoying [myself]. To score for the national team is special. The national team is the love of my life, winning the Euros would be a dream," said Ronaldo after the match.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner was part of the Portuguese squad which had stayed at the Grand Plaza Hotel during a visit to Ljubljana. The hotel management has now collaborated with media company POP TV to announce the auction of Ronaldo's bed, with all the proceeds going to charity.

Portugal's new centre-right Prime Minister Luis Montenegro unveiled his cabinet Thursday, after his centre-right coalition barely managed to emerge top in a badly fractured parliament.

Portugal PM-elect picks new cabinet

Portugal is holding a snap parliamentary election, voting is currently underway in the country polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. and will close at 7:00 p.m. local time. Results are expected around midnight. More than 10 million citizens are eligible to vote in this election. The choice is between Center left Socialist Party Center right Social Democratic party and a far right Chega party. Watch to know more!

Portugal heads for political instability, Parliament fails to elect speaker

Portugal's president named Luis Montenegro, head of the centre-right Democratic Alliance (AD), as the country's new prime minister on Thursday and invited him to form a minority government after eight years of Socialist rule.

The AD won a parliamentary election on March 10 by a slim margin, far short of a working majority. Montenegro, 51, has repeatedly said his party is prepared to govern on its own and will not negotiate a broad formal agreement with the far-right party Chega to work together.

Chega emerged as a political force after quadrupling its parliamentary representation - a first for a far-right party since the fall of a fascist dictatorship 50 years ago.

An AD government will be dependent on piecemeal deals in parliament with Chega or the left wing to pass legislation, making it potentially unstable.

The widely expected nomination by conservative President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa came shortly after midnight on Thursday after the remaining ballots from abroad were counted by the electoral commission, giving Chega two additional seats, while the AD and the Socialists added just one each.

Overall, the AD won 80 seats in the 230-seat legislature, which is expected to return next week, followed by the Socialists at 78 seats and Chega, which was founded just five years ago, with 50.

"The AD won the election...(so) the president...decided to nominate Luis Montenegro as prime minister," the president's office said in a statement.

The result underscores a political tilt to right-wing populism and a dwindling of Socialist governance across Europe, which is expected to result in gains for far-right parties in European elections in June.

After being named premier, Montenegro told reporters the government would be sworn in on April 2. Within 10 days of that date must present its programme to parliament, which is automatically approved unless parliament holds a vote to reject it.

Montenegro added that he would present his cabinet of ministers to Rebelo de Sousa next Thursday.

Analysts expect an AD government will be allowed to take over, and they see the 2025 budget as its first test of survival toward the end of this year. A rejected budget could lead to a new election.

Chega leader and former TV sports commentator Andre Ventura has threatened to vote against the bill and said the AD would be responsible for any political instability if it continues to ignore his party. But he also signalled support for at least some initial steps proposed by Montenegro.

Such initiatives include higher wages and benefits for healthcare workers, police and teachers, and lower income taxes.

Portugal's centre-right Democratic Alliance was set to finish first in Sunday's parliamentary election but fall short of an outright majority with 92 per cent of ballots counted, suggesting tough negotiations ahead with the far-right that made huge gains.

The populist, far-right Chega party came third with nearly 19 per cent of the vote, almost tripling its result in the last election in early 2022, when it won 7.2 per cent. It campaigned on an anti-establishment message, vows to sweep away corruption and hostility to what it sees as "excessive" immigration.

Pending the final tally, the Democratic Alliance (AD) garnered 29.8 per cent of votes, slightly ahead of the incumbent Socialist Party (PS) that had earned 28.7 per cent.

The provisional results were in line with exit polls published after polling stations closed at 8 pm (2000 GMT). Turnout was almost 65 per cent, up sharply from 51.5 per cent in 2022.

"It's the end of the two-party system," Chega leader Andre Ventura told reporters, referring to the PS and the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which helms the newly created AD. The two have alternated in power since the end of a fascist dictatorship five decades ago.

Sunday's vote clearly shows the Portuguese want a coalition government between the AD and Chega, Ventura added.

However, the AD has so far ruled out any deal with Chega, which could make for an unstable minority government that far-right lawmakers could topple at any point.

At the AD election night party, supporter Paula Madeiro said there was "no doubt that instability will be constant".

Alexandra Ferreira, a 21-year-old law student and member of the Socialist Party, said she was "very sad" with the results because of the far-right's growth. She said it showed that "we have a society with no memory", in reference to the dictatorship that ended in 1974.

AD supporter Joao Cunha, also 21, said the country's situation was bad after eight years of the PS in power, with young people still emigrating in search of better opportunities. He hoped a change in government would bring about reforms in healthcare and higher education.

Sunday's ballot was triggered by Socialist Prime Minister Antonio Costa's resignation amid a graft investigation four months ago.

Issues dominating the campaign in Western Europe's poorest country include a crippling housing crisis, low wages, sagging healthcare and corruption, seen by many as endemic to the mainstream parties.
