Oppenheimer (2023)

Cillian Murphy, in a career-defining performance in his latest film, brings the mysterious and tormented Oppenheimer to life with an almost otherworldly intensity. The portrayal captures the essence of a man torn between his insatiable hunger for discovery and the haunting spectre of the destruction he helps orchestrate.
Breakfast on Pluto (2005)

This whimsical and poignant film, directed by Neil Jordan, sees Murphy in the role of Patrick "Kitten" Braden, a transgender woman searching for her true identity in 1970s Ireland and London. With a delicate balance of vulnerability and resilience, Murphy's performance as Kitten is a triumph of empathy and nuance.
Red Eye (2005)

In this gripping and intense thriller directed by Wes Craven, Cillian Murphy portrays Jackson Rippner, a charming yet sinister hitman. The film follows Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams), a hotel manager who finds herself trapped on a red-eye flight with Murphy's character after he reveals his sinister intentions. Red Eye showcases Murphy's ability to portray a chilling antagonist with a magnetic presence. His character's calm demeanor and calculated manipulation create unnerving tension throughout the film. Murphy's performance adds an extra layer of complexity to the psychological cat-and-mouse game, making Red Eye a heart-pounding and memorable cinematic experience.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley (2006)

In this powerful historical drama directed by Ken Loach, Murphy embodies the role of Damien, a young doctor who becomes entangled in the Irish War of Independence against British rule. Set in the early 1920s, the film delves into the tumultuous period of Ireland's struggle for independence and the ensuing Irish Civil War. Murphy's performance is a masterclass in portraying the moral dilemmas faced by a man torn between his duty to his family and his allegiance to his country. With grace and intensity, Murphy delivers a performance that resonates deeply with the audience, breathing life into a pivotal chapter of Irish history.

Peacock (2010)

This lesser-known gem in Cillian Murphy's filmography is a testament to his ability to take on challenging and unconventional roles. Directed by Michael Lander, Peacock revolves around the enigmatic character of John Skillpa, a man leading a double life as both himself and a woman named Emma. Murphy's portrayal of this complex character is a tour de force, capturing the intricacies of John's split personality with astonishing finesse. His ability to convey vulnerability and internal conflict makes Peacock an intriguing and thought-provoking exploration of identity and human nature.

Cillian Murphy's top five performances, including Oppenheimer

As the Indian Box Office and Bollywood, in particular, continue to experience a lull, has the Barbenheimer mania caught on with the Indian audience? Watch this exclusive conversation with PVR MD Ajay Bijli only on The India Story.

Barbie and Oppenheimer have brought audience back to the theaters

Christopher Nolan's latest film, a Cillian Murphy-starrer biopic called Oppenheimer, has taken the box office by storm, even holdings its own against Greta Gerwig's Barbie. Murphy's performance as theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned "father of the atomic bomb," has garnered widespread acclaim. It also features names like Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh in its cast. The film is adapted from the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The event at the centre of the movie is the Trinity test, in which the first atomic weapon was successfully tested.

The film features a scene in which Oppenheimer, while at Cambridge, poisoned the apple of his university tutor Patrick Blackett (James D'Arcy) with potassium cyanide.

Oppenheimer's grandson speaks about the controversial scene

Charles Oppenheimer, Oppenheimer's grandson, spoke to TIME magazine about the scene and the film in general. He said while he found the film "compelling" and "engaging", there was one part that he did not like.

"The part I like the least is this poison apple reference, which was a problem in American Prometheus. If you read American Prometheus carefully enough, the authors say, 'We don't really know if it happened.' There's no record of him trying to kill somebody. That's a really serious accusation and it's historical revision. There's not a single enemy or friend of Robert Oppenheimer who heard that during his life and considered it to be true," said Charles.

"American Prometheus got it from some references talking about a spring break trip, and all the original reporters of that story — there was only two maybe three — reported that they didn't know what Robert Oppenheimer was talking about. Unfortunately, American Prometheus summarises that as Robert Oppenheimer tried to kill his teacher and then they [acknowledge that] maybe there's this doubt," he added.

WION's review of Oppenheimer read, "As Oppenheimer unfolds, Nolan presents us with a kaleidoscope of ethical dilemmas that transcend time. The film's resonance lies not only in its historical accuracy but also in its exploration of the human condition, the pursuit of knowledge, and the choices that shape our destinies. Oppenheimer is an unmissable cinematic event. I am not quite sure if it is indeed Nolan's best work as many have said, but it definitely comes close."

Oppenheimer's grandson disapproves of THIS scene in Nolan's film: The part I like least...

Cillian Murphy is happy that he wasn’t cast as Batman in Christopher Nolan’s reimagination of the caped crusader in his trilogy. Nolan cast Christian Bale as Batman and the director-actor duo was praised for the three films that gave the superhero-noir a new meaning. Now that Cillian has been earning praise for his role in Nolan’s Oppenheimer, he was asked how he felt about losing the glamorous part to Christian Bale.

Speaking to GQ magazine in an interview, Cillian Murphy said that it was “for the best” that Bale was cast as Batman. “Yes, I think it was for the best because we got Christian Bale’s performance, which is a stunning interpretation of that role.” He added, “I never considered myself as the right physical specimen for Batman. To me, it was always going to be Christian Bale.”

Christopher Nolan cast Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow

The director had a similar viewpoint. He didn’t think that Cillian could pull off the Batman role but he still asked him to screen test as he wanted Cillian as the anti-hero of the film, Scarecrow. “Everybody was so excited by watching [Cillian] perform that when I then said to them, ‘Okay, Christian Bale is Batman, but what about Cillian to play Scarecrow?’ There was no dissent,” Nolan recently told Entertainment Weekly. “All the previous Batman villains had been played by huge movie stars: Jack Nicholson, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jim Carrey, that kind of thing. That was a big leap for them and it really was purely on the basis of that test. So that’s how you got to play Scarecrow.”

Cillian Murphy opens up on losing Batman role to Christian Bale in Nolan's superhero trilogy

July 21 was an important day for cinema lovers all over the world as two big films -Barbie and Oppenheimer released worldwide. The films are drastically different from each other and yet have distinct voices. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer talks of World War II talks of America's journey to becoming a nuclear power while also highlighting the futility of war. Meanwhile Greta Gerwig's Barbie changes the age old narrarive of the oconic doll and takes on patriarchy and mysogny head on. WION's film critics Kshitij Mohan Rawat and Shomini Sen discuss the hype around the two films and if it truly a historic moment from cinema.

Barbenheimer: Dissecting the hype around Barbie and Oppenheimer | WION PODCAST

Christopher Nolan's new movie Oppenheimer, in which he chronicles the life of J Robert Oppenheimer, has taken the centre-stage in discussions surrounding the nuclear bomb and the life of the man who created such a destructive weapon. While the movie talks about a lot of things, it's peppered with baffling human emotions, mental disarray and repentance. It's about a success served cold and grisly. Here are the 8 dark shades of human lives depicted in the movie.

1. Fallacy of human mind

Mind is a mysterious world, full of waves of emotions and ideas all of which one may not be able to gather at once. To lose oneself to the atrocities unleashed by one's mind is only natural. But Nolan has shown how Oppenheimer lives through the pursuit of ultimate scientific glory in his initial days in Cambridge and Germany, only to fall into its fallacy of creating the most lethal weapon for deterrence among nations and for the world to find its peace. It's the mind of a scientist who is excited at the invention and is seeking happiness from the creation of something affirmative which may build the future of the world, unable to see its dark side.

2. 'To sin is a human business, but to justify sins is a devilish business'

This statement by Russian author Leo Tolstoy underlines the intense nuclear proliferation by Washington and Moscow that brought humanity closest to its prospect of annihilation. The statement also sits aptly for a few instances which the film depicts from the life of the scientist as well as that of former US president Harry S Truman. Oppenheimer is seen encountering a moment when rage takes over his sensibilities and he ends up poisoning an apple which he hopes his professor will eat.

ALSO READ | Trapped in politics: Should Dr Oppenheimer have been blacklisted for what he did?

This is a perfect example of how people sin and how Oppenheimer's character hints at the destructiveness it may unleash in future. But the devil is seen residing in Truman too, who in a chilling scene, nonchalantly hands over a white handkerchief to the scientist to wipe his hands, when the latter, filled with guilt and remorse, says "I have blood on my hand".

3. Even the most decorated people can go nude with loose morals

While going through the pre-decided hearing, Oppenheimer is shown standing at the conjunction of realism and hyperrealism, driven by shame and fear of societal defamation when he is forced to reveal his meetings with Jean Tatlock, as his wife sits behind and stares at his revelation. It's a perfect depiction of how the scientist, who was once "the man of the moment", is now being stripped naked because of some of his wrongdoings in his personal life.

4. Excitement to reach the finishing line fades once the line is crossed

There is hustle and bustle and speed as America races against time to create the deadliest weapon humankind has ever seen. Shallow breath, hard deadlines which seem impossible to be met and curious eyes that stare blankly at the future – this is what defines the environment of Los Alamos hours before the Trinity test. However, once the test is successful and the success is celebrated, there is an eerie lull that stands behind the back of Oppenheimer as he looks at trucks filled with bombs he created going away to show the world the magic he brought to existence.

5. Most magnificent magic may hide death in its heart

'Magic' is the word that Oppenheimer utters when he talks about the most anticipated Trinity test. There is a thirst of a magician to show the world the most perfect trick ever mastered. He seems to be willing to give away everything to make it happen. However, hours before the test, he seemed to be hounded by the thoughts of what if the fire he is about to ignite may burn the whole world. It is the gory truth that the soul is aware of and the human mind refuses to accept.

6. Evil awakens the devil

If we look at World War II, we may find the scale of balance faltering, failing to choose who is more atrocious. The persecution of Jews by Nazi Germany is seen as one of the darkest phases of mankind. Even when the world was witnessing it, the defined monstrosity of Nazi Germany must have left weaker Jews horrified and afraid and the stronger ones filled with rage to avenge the cruelty.

WATCH | Gravitas: Oppenheimer opens with a bang in Kashmir

Science doesn't remain confined to labs and experimental sites; it unfolds itself in the growing, burgeoning society. That's what happened with Isaac Newton's Third Law of Motion - "For every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction". It was the horrors committed by Nazis that somewhere seems to have led Oppenheimer, himself a Jew, to think about creating something which can eradicate them completely.

7. What is once gained is always meant to be lost

Oppenheimer, who became the greatest scientist of his time and earned the title of the "father of the atomic bomb" and was featured in TIME magazine as the "man of the moment", suddenly saw his life falling apart with his security clearance getting revoked and him being branded as a "Russian spy". It is a full circle as life seems to complete its ecstatic dance, full of highs and lows, losing everything that once was earned through ideation, hard work and seldom through magic.

8. Humans don't ride on future, they get consumed by it

The future is a far-fetched dream that humans, like Oppenheimer, try to construct with their own efforts, only to find themselves stuck in its chaos and noise. As Oppenheimer takes the stage to address the roaring crowds after the success of the Trinity test, he seems to be troubled and lost in the future in which he had constructed himself. He is grieving and filled with sorrow and his vision is haunted by visuals of humans wailing and hurt after the bombing. Humans tend to believe they know it all, but what lies in future is just another magic that time reveals, eventually consuming us mere humans wholly.

Even when the world was witnessing it, the defined monstrosity of Nazi Germany must have left weaker Jews horrified and afraid and the stronger ones filled with rage to avenge the cruelty. WATCH | Gravitas: Oppenheimer opens with a bang in Kashmir Science doesn't remain confined to labs and experimental sites; it unfolds itself in the growing, burgeoning society. That's what happened with Isaac Newton's Third Law of Motion - "For every action in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction". It was the horrors committed by Nazis that somewhere seems to have led Oppenheimer, himself a Jew, to think about creating something which can eradicate them completely. 7. What is once gained is always meant to be lost Oppenheimer, who became the greatest scientist of his time and earned the title of the "father of the atomic bomb" and was featured in TIME magazine as the "man of the moment", suddenly saw his life falling apart with his security clearance getting revoked and him being branded as a "Russian spy". It is a full circle as life seems to complete its ecstatic dance, full of highs and lows, losing everything that once was earned through ideation, hard work and seldom through magic. 8. Humans don't ride on future, they get consumed by it The future is a far-fetched dream that humans, like Oppenheimer, try to construct with their own efforts, only to find themselves stuck in its chaos and noise.
Many would say that Oppenheimer's name should be written in golden letters in the history books, but there's also a section that would argue that his name should be part of the darkest chapters of history.

With the world premiere of Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, once again the physicist's name has become the centre of attention as the world discusses World War II, the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945, and the moral compass of the world we live in.

But they were shaken by reality and their consciences were jolted when horrifying details started to emerge from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the two Japanese cities bombed by America.

The US dropped two bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and August 9, 1945 respectively, wiping out around 90 per cent of the cities and killing around 129,000 and 226,000 people, including those who died as a result of radiation exposure. Japan surrendered a few days after the second attack, thereby ending the war.

The death toll spoke volumes about what was done... the victims of the atomic bombing were either dead or unable to speak in the aftermath of thermal flash burns.
Oppenheimer, portrayed by Cillian Murphy in the movie, went into a sense of guilt and contemplation of his actions. In order to avoid such catastrophe in the future, he visited then-president Harry S Truman in late October. Truman had given the greenlight for the use of both bombs.

History books have revealed, and as vividly shown in Nolan's movie, Oppenheimer began working with the US Atomic Energy Commission to control the use of nuclear weapons.

He even opposed the commission about creating a hydrogen bomb when Truman approached him in 1949. Oppenheimer believed that the H-bomb, according to him a weapon of mass genocide, was worse than the atomic bomb.

Trapped in politics: Should Dr Oppenheimer have been blacklisted for what he did?

While the recently released film Barbie looks all fun and pink and not-so-serious, there was a lot that went down during the production phase that makes the movie what it is. Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starrer Barbie raises some important questions about the current social and cultural dynamics, man-woman relationship, and the status quo in general. Among some of the most iconic moments from the film, America Ferrera’s impassioned monologue stands out.

Starring in the film as Gloria, a Mattel executive who helps Barbie land back on her feet, the Emmy-winning actor spoke about the double standards women face on a daily basis. The speech, however, took a lot of takes, in fact 30-50 takes.

America Ferrera shot the scene over two days

In a new interview, America Ferrera revealed that they shot the scene over “two days”. She said, “We shot it over two days. It’s one part of a much bigger scene with lots of characters in it. I had to do it many, many times for other people’s coverage and to get through the whole scene over the course of two days.”

Ferrera revealed that she had utmost control over the speech and that Barbie makers, Greta Gerwig and husband co-writer Noah Baumbach, gave her “so much freedom”. The speech even changed shape during filming, when Greta and America added a section where Gloria rails against women always having to appear grateful.

“There were moments in shooting the movie where Greta really had written something in a very specific way that she heard a very specific way in her head with particular cadence in a particular speed or a particular inflection,” Ferrera said. “I thought maybe this would be like that, but it was the opposite. She wanted me to completely make it my own and find it as we did it.”

It felt like they filmed 500 takes of the speech

Ferrera said it felt like she filmed 500 takes of the speech over the two days of filming, adding, “It was probably 30 to 50 full runs of it, top to bottom. By the end, [co-star Ariana Greenblatt] recited the monologue to me because she had memorised it because that’s how many times I had said it.”

Barbie is currently playing in theatres worldwide.

"I'd like to know where Lewis Strauss was on the day Kennedy was assassinated," read this post on social media platform X, previously known as Twitter. After coming across it, I immediately started to ponder whether or not Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has opened a can of worms by leading towards a new conspiracy theory about Kennedy's assassination.

Lewis Strauss was an American businessman, philanthropist, and naval officer who served two terms on the US Atomic Energy Commission. Robert Downey Jr has played the role of Strauss in Nolan's masterpiece.

JFK assassination in 1963

Former president of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) was assassinated in 1963. Even since his death, several conspiracy theories have circulated online and on the dark web, from the alleged involvement of the then-Cuban government... to the blame on the US administration, with claims of it being an inside job. A poll conducted by ABC News in 2003 found that 70 per cent of Americans believe Kennedy's death was the result of a broader plot.

Now after watching the movie, some are again asking on social media about a new theory, involving Strauss, the man who wanted to beat Robert Oppenheimer and plotted a conspiracy against him by allegedly aiding an inquiry. (spoiler alert)

The movie shows how Strauss colluded with William L Borden, who flagged Oppenheimer to the White House by writing a letter, referring to secret and confidential files. The letter led to the security hearing.

The Dark Sun: The Making of the Hydrogen Bomb by Richard Rhodes mentions that "The hearings broke Oppenheimer's spirit and he was never the same person afterwards".

Also read: Trapped in politics: Should Dr Oppenheimer have been blacklisted for what he did?

Bitter relations between Oppenheimer and Strauss

Strauss could hate Oppenheimer for a number of reasons. One, their political worldviews were different; second, Oppenheimer embarrassed him at a public hearing by mocking him in front of everyone; third, Strauss believed that Oppenheimer was responsible for creating a difference between him and Albert Einstein (the pond scene which was clarified towards the end of the movie).

Strauss was denied the position of Secretary of Commerce at the White House during the Eisenhower administration because of an outcry from the Senate. After around two months of hearings, his nomination was rejected by the Senate in 1959, which was apparently a humiliating defeat for Strauss.

In the movie, Strauss asks, "Who was it? Who voted against my confirmation?".

His aide replies, "A young hotshot out of Massachusetts trying to make a name for himself...John...John Kennedy".

Nolan's movie shows Strauss was ideologically different from Dr Oppenheimer, he has also been seen as someone who is spiteful. If the Oppenheimer security hearing was out of spite, what could he have done to someone who denied him a Senate seat?

Lewis Strauss was an American businessman, philanthropist, and naval officer who served two terms on the US Atomic Energy Commission. Robert Downey Jr has played the role of Strauss in Nolan's masterpiece. JFK assassination in 1963 Former president of the United States John Fitzgerald Kennedy (JFK) was assassinated in 1963. Also read: Oppenheimer review: Nolan's visually stunning epic fuses genius and guilt Now after watching the movie, some are again asking on social media about a new theory, involving Strauss, the man who wanted to beat Robert Oppenheimer and plotted a conspiracy against him by allegedly aiding an inquiry. (spoiler alert) The movie shows how Strauss colluded with William L Borden, who flagged Oppenheimer to the White House by writing a letter, referring to secret and confidential files. Bitter relations between Oppenheimer and Strauss Strauss could hate Oppenheimer for a number of reasons. Here are some posts on X. One user wrote, "Wait… did the Oppenheimer movie suggest that Lewis Strauss was the one who shot JF Kennedy?" Conspiracy theories around Kennedy's assassination are back, thanks to Oppenheimer

If you have seen Oppenheimer already you’d know that the film has self-censored certain intimate scenes in countries outside the US. The dark historical drama of Oppenheimer’s tryst with making the world’s first atomic bomb and then reeling under the internal pressure of bringing death upon humanity also features some intimate scenes between Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh’s character.

There’s one scene in which the theoretical physicist sits naked across from Florence Pugh’s Jean Tatlock, a Communist Party member with whom he had a torrid affair. In the unedited version of the film, Pugh is topless as she converses with Murphy’s character in a hotel room. But in the sequence that plays in countries like India and the Middle Eastern region, her body is seen covered with a computer-generated black dress.

The makers had voluntarily decided to give these scenes a modest touch so that the film can have a smooth release in these countries.

Oppenheimer: Florence Pugh's nude scene covered with CGI-dress in India and Middle East

A scene in Christopher Nolan's film Oppenheimer has offended religious sentiments. The movie features a reference to the Bhagavad Gita during a sexual scene. When does artistic freedom become an unacceptable liberty? Priyanka Sharma brings you the details.

Gravitas: Did Christopher Nolan insult Hindus?

Oppenheimer may have its share of controversy but that has not kept away the crowds. Srinagar's lone multiplex reported record sales on the day of the movie's release. This is the first time a Hollywood epic thriller has achieved a full house in Kashmir's multiplex. Priyanka Sharma brings you the details.

Gravitas: Oppenheimer opens with a bang in Kashmir

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer, exploring the life and work of theoretical physicist J Robert Oppenheimer (played by Cillian Murphy), is now playing in theatres worldwide. And as per estimates, its chances at the worldwide box office look really good. Its unlikely pairing with Warner Bros' Barbie, featuring Margot Robbie in the lead, in what was called 'Barbenheimer' clearly paid dividends. The two films complemented each other instead of serving as each other's competition. Anyhoo, Oppenheimer is Nolan's 12th movie, and the filmmaker is at the top of his game. There are few directors who can demand studios upwards of $100 million on a project that is not related to a popular intellectual property or franchise.

Indian director Ram Gopal Varma reacts to controversial Bhagvad Gita scene in Oppenheimer

With Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan's latest film, hitting theatres worldwide, it has received resounding acclaim from both critics and audiences. The film's success at the box office is further amplified by the Barbenheimer phenomenon, with eager moviegoers flocking to experience Nolan's storytelling prowess on the big screen once again. As expected with any Nolan production, Oppenheimer is sparking numerous discussions and debates among viewers, as they delve into its themes and intricacies. However, in contrast to some of Nolan's previous works, like the mind-bending Inception, Oppenheimer is not as head-scratching or enigmatic. Inception, in particular, was pretty dense throughout in terms of lore and even its ending was ambiguous. And even now, film buffs discuss what exactly that final moment meant.

What was Inception all about?

Inception revolved around Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Cobb, a skilled thief who delves into people's subconscious to steal information. As the story unfolds, Cobb traverses between dreams and reality until he finally reunites with his children in the last scene. In that pivotal moment, Cobb spins a totem — a device that determines if he is in a dream — but he chooses not to witness its outcome before cutting to black. This left audiences worldwide holding their breath in anticipation.

What does Inception ending mean? Christopher Nolan says his wife and producer Emma Thomas has the answer

During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Nolan may have given us an insight into the ending. He shared that, at some point, he frequently faced questions about the film's conclusion, especially when caught outside a screening.

Nolan attributed the best explanation to his wife and producer, Emma Thomas. He emphasised that the significance of the final shot lies in the fact that Cobb's character doesn't care about the distinction between dream and reality at that moment. It's a question Nolan doesn't feel entirely comfortable answering.

“I think it was Emma who pointed out the correct answer, really, is that the character, Leo’s character - the point of the shot is the character doesn’t care at that point. It’s not a question I comfortably answer," he said.

Also Read: Oppenheimer review: Nolan's visually stunning epic fuses genius and guilt What was Inception all about? Inception revolved around Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Cobb, a skilled thief who delves into people's subconscious to steal information. As the story unfolds, Cobb traverses between dreams and reality until he finally reunites with his children in the last scene. In that pivotal moment, Cobb spins a totem — a device that determines if he is in a dream — but he chooses not to witness its outcome before cutting to black. This left audiences worldwide holding their breath in anticipation. What does Inception ending mean? Christopher Nolan says his wife and producer Emma Thomas has the answer During a recent interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Nolan may have given us an insight into the ending. How did the audience react to Inception's ending? The audience reaction to Inception's ending was diverse and divided. Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer running full house in Kashmir's lone multiplex

Director Christopher Nolan's highly anticipated film Oppenheimer opened to packed theatres across the world on Friday. The three-hour-long bio-thriller opens with a flurry of scenes, not necessarily connected to each other, which bounce back and forth between black and white and colour. The film's initial shots can be confusing for most viewers and may even seem slightly incoherent.

The usual assumption, which applies to most films, is that scenes in colour showcase the linear timeline of the narrative while black and white scenes depict significant flashbacks into the past. But this rule does not apply to Nolan's Oppenheimer. The film does not use black and white and colour to denote past and present.

What do Oppenheimer's colour and black and white scenes signify?

The scenes featuring J Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) are seen in colour - whether he is in college as a student or in the latter half of his life. He also appears in black-and-white sequences, much like Lewis Strauss (played by Robert Downey Jr).

Both the characters are shown in two colour schemes, in both past and present. The colour schemes, though signify different points of view. The stark contrast in colour schemes is used to highlight the juxtaposition between the film's protagonist, Oppenheimer, and his eventual nemesis, Strauss.

Scenes in colour are from Oppenheimer's point of view. Those in black-and-white are supposed to be from Strauss' account.

According to a report in The Insider, the production notes of the film state that Nolan wanted Oppenheimer's perspective in colour with occasional cutaways to evocative, surreal imagery that symbolically expressed his interior world. The scenes that centre on Strauss would be in black and white.

According to Nolan, the challenge of the film was, "to tell the story of a person who was involved in what was ultimately an extraordinary destructive sequence of events, but done for the right reasons, and tell it from his point of view."

Critical Response to Oppenheimer

The film has received positive reviews from most critics across the world. WION's Kshitij Rawat wrote that the film is packed with great performances and called Robert Downey Jr's performance as a 'revelation'. "The biggest revelation of the movie comes from the unorthodox casting of Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Downey Jr, mostly renowned for playing Tony Stark or Iron Man, delivers an astonishingly restrained and introspective performance that delves into the enigma of human conscience. His portrayal is one of quiet power, a stark reminder that even amidst the grandest schemes of science and war, the weight of ethical contemplation remains as heavy as the heart of an atom." Read the full review of Oppenheimer here.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer has both colour and black-and-white scenes for this reason

Christopher Nolan-directorial 'Oppenheimer' is in the middle of a controversy over a reference to the Bhagavad Gita, the holy scripture of Hindus, during an intimate scene. In this scene, Oppenheimer appears to have sex as he reads out verses from the holy Hindu scripture. The scene features Cillian Murphy and Florence Pugh, who play J Robert Oppenheimer and Jean Tatlock respectively.

Netizens slam ‘Oppenheimer’ over explicit scene where ‘Bhagavad Gita’ is referenced

Most people have heard about the Manhattan project. And how the United States beat Nazi Germany in the nuclear race to produce the first Atomic Bomb. But what very few people seem to be aware of is the cost that the Democratic Republic of Congo has paid in America's quest for the nuclear bomb. The name Shinkolobwe may not ring a bell for many people. But this small Uranium mine located in the southern province of Katanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo is from where the United States sourced much of its Uranium ore that was used in the Manhattan project. WION's Mohammed Saleh tells you how the United States effected a military coup to control Congo's Uranium mine.

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is in the headlines for so many reasons - among many, the one thing that has gained the attention of netizens is the fascinating relationship and a sex scene between Dr J. Oppenheimer controversy: Netizens slam Nolan's film for placing Bhagavad Gita in a sex scene

It's Barbie and Oppenheimer week! The most-awaited movies of the year arrived at theatres worldwide together on July 21. The release of both films has been touted as the biggest box office clash fans have ever witnessed in recent years. Both Barbie and Oppenheimer are doing great business across the world, but as was expected, Greta Gerwig's film is a step ahead of Nolan's atomic bomb thriller.

Gerwig's film on the famous doll line has earned a whopping $22.3 million in Wednesday and Thursday box office previews. Meanwhile, Nolan's film made $10.5 million in previews, per Variety.

Both films are expected to attract a huge audience worldwide.

With the outstanding start, Margot Robbie's film has outperformed Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 previews, which earned $17.5 million.

Huge box office expectations

The release of Warner Bros. Barbie and Universal’s Oppenheimer has been seen as the biggest week post-pandemic. As per early estimates, Margot Robbie's film is expected to earn more than $100 million in the first three days of its release. Many reports are suggesting that it may earn more than $150 million.

Meanwhile, Cillian Murphy’s star-studded thriller will take the second spot, with estimates suggesting that the movie is eyeing $77 million in the first three days, per Deadline.

If we look at the critics' reaction, Nolan's Oppenheimer is the winner. The film garnered a 92 per cent score on the review aggregation platform, Rotten Tomatoes.
What is Barbie all about?

Directed by Greta, the movie follows the story of Barbie and Ken, who are expelled from Barbie Land due to their imperfections, and together they will explore the real world. The movie is co-written by Gerwig and Noah Baumbach.

WION's review on Barbie: Film critic Shomini Sen writes, ''I would still say that the film very smartly shows how society is and humanises the iconic doll. For decades Barbie has been one of the most popular toys for young girls, setting unrealistic standards of beauty. Sure, Mattel has reinvented the doll and made every girl believe that they can be whatever they want to be - just like their favourite doll, but the narrative of everything being overtly perfect has also done damage to several. Greta, in that sense, spins the narrative and adds a layer of cynicism to Barbie land to show how things are in real. Flawed, depressed, and definitely not perfect- even though the plastic remains constant.'' Read the full review here:
WION's review on Oppenheimer: Film critic Kshitij Mohan Rawat writes, ''As Oppenheimer unfolds, Nolan presents us with a kaleidoscope of ethical dilemmas that transcend time. Huge box office expectations The release of Warner Bros. Meanwhile, Greta Gerwig's film, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has garnered an impressive 89 per cent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Flawed, depressed, and definitely not perfect- even though the plastic remains constant.'' Read the full review here: More about Oppenheimer: Oppenheimer is based on the biopic of J. Oppenheimer: A visually stunning epic fuses genius and guilt

Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer is currently running in theatres around the world. The film is riding on positive reviews and should kick off its box office journey on a high note. Starring Cillian Murphy in the lead role, Oppenheimer centres around the life of J Robert Oppenheimer, the renowned theoretical physicist often referred to as the "father of the atomic bomb". The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer written by Kai Bird and the late Martin J Sherwin. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, among others also star.

Meanwhile, Nolan has opened up as to whether he would like to direct a James Bond movie.

Will Christopher Nolan direct a James Bond movie?

Nolan said while speaking at the Happy Sad Confused podcast, "The influence of those movies in my filmography is embarrassingly apparent. It would be an amazing privilege to do one. It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong."

"You wouldn’t want to take on a film without being fully committed to what you bring to the table creatively. So as a writer, casting, everything — it’s a full package.
Since Daniel Craig's retirement from the James Bond role, there has been much speculation about his potential successor. Michael G. Christopher Nolan says it'd be an 'amazing privilege' to direct a James Bond movie

In the unyielding crucible of Christopher Nolan's cinematic imagination, where reality and illusion dance an eternal tango, emerges Oppenheimer — an audacious epic biographical thriller that plunges us into the complex, morally turbulent life of one J Robert Oppenheimer. This visionary theoretical physicist, whose seemingly boundless intellect birthed the awe-inspiring yet chilling dawn of the Atomic Age through the Manhattan Project, now takes centre stage as the enigmatic maestro of Nolan's masterful symphony. Cillian Murphy's magnetic performance as Oppenheimer, flanked by a stellar ensemble, gives a mesmerising tale of science, secrets, and conscience.

What is Oppenheimer all about?

Oppenheimer, both written and directed by Nolan, is a sweeping opus of historical significance that draws inspiration from Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin's seminal biography, American Prometheus (which everyone should definitely read). Oppenheimer suffered from a dilemma. His work on the Manhattan Project leads to the creation of the first nuclear weapons, which are later used in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, resulting in a devastating loss of life and the beginning of the atomic age. He grapples with the moral implications of his scientific achievements. On one hand, he is driven by an insatiable hunger for discovery and the pursuit of knowledge, which leads to groundbreaking advancements in the field of physics and the development of the atomic bomb. On the other hand, he is haunted by the destructive power of his own creations and the immense human suffering they cause.

He dances between science and conscience.

Led by Cillian Murphy, Oppenheimer is packed with powerful performances

Cillian Murphy, in a career-defining performance, brings the mysterious and tormented Oppenheimer to life with an almost otherworldly intensity (those deep blue eyes!). As he embarks on a perilous journey through the unfathomable realms of physics and morality, the portrayal captures the essence of a man torn between his insatiable hunger for discovery and the haunting spectre of the destruction he helps orchestrate. Murphy's performance embodies Oppenheimer as a scientific prodigy haunted by the terrible consequences of his own brilliance — a dichotomy that lays the groundwork for the film's emotional core.

Emily Blunt, as Oppenheimer's long-suffering wife Katherine "Kitty" Oppenheimer, stands as a pillar in a tempest of ethical dilemmas. She crafts a poignant and deeply affecting portrait of a woman, married to genius, who must deal with her husband's inner demons, the weight of her own moral convictions, and his adulterous tendencies. Even in a minor role, Blunt is superlative.

Robert Downey Jr is a revelation as Lewis Strauss

But perhaps the biggest revelation of the movie comes from the unorthodox casting of Robert Downey Jr as Lewis Strauss, a senior member of the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Downey Jr, mostly renowned for playing Tony Stark or Iron man, delivers an astonishingly restrained and introspective performance that delves into the enigma of human conscience. His portrayal is one of quiet power, a stark reminder that even amidst the grandest schemes of science and war, the weight of ethical contemplation remains as heavy as the heart of an atom.

The supporting cast, including Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh, further solidify Oppenheimer as a gripping ensemble piece. Each actor (and there are many, many renowned faces that appear for a few minutes of screen time) breathes life into their respective characters, weaving an intricate tapestry of personal motivations, political maneuverings, and ethical quandaries.

Christopher Nolan's non-linear style plays well in Oppenheimer

Nolan's signature style, with its non-linear narrative, transcends mere storytelling, guiding the audience through a labyrinth of time and memory. Seamlessly transitioning between Oppenheimer's past and present, Nolan skillfully explores the fluidity of memory, perception, and remorse. His directorial prowess, matched with the stunning artistry of Hoyte van Hoytema, turns Oppenheimer into an exquisite visual epic, with many memorable visual images. The Trinity Test, which proved to the US government that this weapon indeed was as destructive as the scientists claimed, is depicted as an event of Biblical proportions. A moment of celebration comes a little later, but at first everyone is shaken by the enormity of the thing.

Ludwig Göransson is a worthy Hans Zimmer replacement

Ludwig Göransson thunderous and evocative score, a lot like the other Nolan regular Hans Zimmer, surges like the pulse of a splitting atom, heightening the film's emotional crescendos and lending palpable urgency to Oppenheimer's quest for both scientific truth and personal redemption. His composition serves as the heartbeat of the film, pulsating with emotion and propelling the narrative forward like a force of nature.

Will Oppenheimer's hefty runtime bother you?

It shouldn't. It didn't definitely bother me. The pace is not exactly blistering fast, but clever editing by Jennifer Lame (of Hereditary and Nolan's own Tenet fame) ensures that the film remains tightly constructed without unnecessary padding. There is a lot of talking. In fact, that is all, for the most part, there is. But Nolan is able to instill a sense of urgency and significance to the unfolding events.
