In the realm of filmmaking, few directors are as dedicated to the cinematic experience as Christopher Nolan. His latest film, Oppenheimer, is no exception. Recognising the importance of the big screen, Universal Pictures has made tickets available early for over a thousand premium large format (PLF) screens, including options like IMAX 70mm, 70mm, IMAX digital, 35mm, and Dolby Cinema.

To help moviegoers understand the significance of these formats, Nolan recently provided a guide in an interaction with the Associated Press. Nolan emphasised the unique experience that these large format screens offer, explaining that they provide an unparalleled immersion that cannot be replicated at home.&nbsp;

Nolan told AP, "You rarely get the chance to really talk to moviegoers directly about why you love a particular format and why if they can find an IMAX screen to see the film on that’s great. We put a lot of effort into shooting the film in a way that we can get it out on these large format screens. It really is just a great way of giving people an experience that they can’t possibly get in the home.”

<h2>3D without the 3D?</h2>

Shooting Oppenheimer on high-resolution film cameras, specifically IMAX 65mm and Panavision 65mm, enhances the sharpness, clarity, and depth of the image. When projected in IMAX 70mm, Nolan said the film creates a 3D-like effect without the need for glasses, enveloping the audience in the world of the movie.

The decision to shoot on 65mm and project in 70mm stems from historical reasons. In the past, the extra 5mm space on the film was reserved for the soundtrack, but with digital sound, this is no longer necessary. Nolan explained that the 5mm difference is purely a visual enhancement that improves the overall quality of the viewing experience.

<h2>But IMAX has its own challenges</h2>

Shooting in IMAX format presents its own challenges, as the captured information must be carefully planned to ensure equal success across different screen shapes and aspect ratios. Nolan and his cinematographer, Hoyte van Hoytema, employ a technique called "centre punching the action" to ensure that nothing is lost when presented in different theatres. Despite the technical considerations, Nolan affirms that there is no compromise to composition, allowing the film to be enjoyed in various formats without sacrificing its artistic integrity.

“We have to plan very carefully because by shooting an IMAX film, you capture a lot of information. Your movie is going to translate very well to all the formats because you’re getting the ultimate amount of visual information. But there are different shapes to the screen — what we call aspect ratios. What you have to plan is how you then frame your imagery so that it can be presented in different theaters with equal success," he said.

<h2>Black and white sequences in Oppenheimer</h2>

Regarding the significance of the black-and-white sequences in Oppenheimer, Nolan explains that they serve a specific storytelling purpose. The film features two timelines: one in colour, representing Oppenheimer's subjective experience, and one in black and white, providing an objective view from a different character's perspective. “I knew that I had two timelines that we were running in the film. One is in colour, and that’s Oppenheimer’s subjective experience. That’s the bulk of the film. Then the other is a black-and-white timeline. It’s a more objective view of his story from a different character’s point of view," he said.

To maintain equal image quality for the black and white portions, Nolan collaborated with Kodak and Fotokem to develop the first-ever black and white IMAX film stock.

<h2>Nolan's favourite format to watch Oppenheimer</h2>

Nolan's favourite format for viewing Oppenheimer is IMAX 70mm, which offers the best possible experience in theatres. However, digital presentations, including IMAX digital and exhibitor PLF options, will be more widely accessible to audiences. Nolan assures viewers that the original film has been meticulously digitised for other formats, ensuring an exceptional experience regardless of the screen.

As for the best seats in the theatre, Nolan shares his personal preference. In a Cinemascope ratio theatre, he likes to sit near the front, in the middle of the third row. In an IMAX 1.43:1 stadium, he prefers to be slightly behind the centre line, right at the middle, a little further back.

<h2>What is Oppenheimer about?&nbsp;</h2>

In Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy steps into the role of J Robert Oppenheimer, the complex and enigmatic theoretical physicist who is remembered as the father of the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer was appointed as the director of the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico, where the bomb was built. The film features a huge starry ensemble supporting cast. Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, and Kenneth Branagh also star.

Oppenheimer releases on July 21.

Christopher Nolan unveils the ultimate movie-watching guide for Oppenheimer

Ace filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer has earned itself an R-rating. Not the first time, but it is definitely a rare feature in his film. Nolan’s other films that got this rating were&nbsp;2000 release Memento and Insomnia in 2002. Post that, all his films largely stayed in the PG-13 area.

In fact, actor David Dastmalchian once revealed that The Dark Knight film had edited out a scene involving his character to maintain the PG-13 rating. Interestingly, his war film, Dunkirk, also earned a PG-13 rating despite of featuring multiple battle scenes.&nbsp;

As for the upcoming film, Oppenheimer, will release on July 21 and is Christopher Nolan’s first film since the pandemic era-Tenet. Tenet came out in 2020.&nbsp;

Oppenheimer is also the longest film of his career at nearly three hours. It stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, considered to be the father of the atomic bomb as leader of the World War II-era Manhattan Project. Nolan showed off footage in April at CinemaCon, where he spoke about his reasoning for making a film about the theoretical physicist.

The film also stars Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt and Florence Pugh.

Oppenheimer is Christopher Nolan’s first R-rated film in 20 years

Christopher Nolan goes back in time to narrate the story of a man tasked with making the atomic bomb. Actor Cillian Murphy plays J Robert Oppenheimer who was given the monumental task to make the atomic bomb a reality. The second trailer of the highly anticipated film Oppenheimer dropped on Monday and gives a further glimpse into Oppenheimer's passion project and his personal life. The film also features Katherine ‘Kitty’ Oppenheimer, Matt Damon as General Leslie Groves Jr and Robert Downey, Jr as Lewis Strauss from US Atomic Energy Commission.

Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, the tense trailer shows the immense pressure the nuclear physicist is under&nbsp;to make sure that the US is the first to make the bomb ahead of enemies like Germany. The teaser gives a glimpse into how, on several occasions, Oppenheimer and General Groves clash as the latter is the director of the Manhattan Project and wants clean results.

Oppenheimer will be Nolan's first release after Tenet which&nbsp;was released in 2022. Oppenheimer is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J Sherwin. The film is set to release worldwide on July 21, 2023 - the same day as Greta Girwig's Barbie which stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling.&nbsp;

Oppenheimer also features&nbsp;Florence Pugh, filmmaker Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Harnett, Rami Malek, actor-filmmaker Kenneth Branagh, Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich and Matthew Modine&nbsp;

Oppenheimer trailer: Christopher Nolan's film explores Robert Oppenheimer's life

The day Christopher Nolan called Cillian Murphy about his new film, Oppenheimer, Murphy hung up the phone in disbelief. The Irish actor, though a regular presence in Nolan films going back almost two decades, had always been a supporting player. This time Nolan wanted him to lead.

“He’s so understated and self-deprecating and, in his very English manner, just said, ‘Listen, I’ve written this script, it’s about Oppenheimer. I’d like you to be my Oppenheimer,’” Murphy, 46, told The Associated Press recently. “It was a great day.”

For Murphy, it is never not exciting to get a call from Nolan. It’s just hard to predict if he’s going to. He knows there are some movies he’s right for and some movies he isn’t.

“I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part,” he said. “But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him.”

<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bK6ldnjE3Y0" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>

Murphy first met Nolan in 2003. He was brought in to screen test for Batman —not just the movie, the character. Murphy knew he wasn’t right for the Dark Knight, but he wanted to meet the man who’d directed Insomnia and Memento. They hit it off and Murphy got to tap into a sinister intensity to play the corrupt psychiatrist Dr. Crane/Scarecrow, who would go on to appear in all three films. Nolan would also call on Murphy to be the conflicted heir to a business empire in Inception and a traumatised soldier in Dunkirk.

“We have this long-standing understanding and trust and shorthand and respect,” Murphy said. “It felt like the right time to take on a bigger responsibility. And it just so happened that it was a (expletive) huge one.”

Soon after the phone call, Nolan flew to Dublin to meet Murphy to hand him a physical copy of the script, which he devoured right there in Nolan’s hotel room in September 2020. It was, he said, the best he’d ever read.

Then the scale of it started to sink in.

This would be a film about the charismatic and controversial theoretical physicist who helped create the atomic bomb. Oppenheimer and his peers at Los Alamos would test it on July 16, 1945, not knowing what was going to happen. Then several weeks later the United States would drop those bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing tens of thousands of people and leaving many with lifelong injuries.

As Nolan said last week in Las Vegas, “Like it or not J. Robert Oppenheimer is the most important person who ever lived.”

Oppenheimer, which opens in theaters on July 21, features a starry cast including Emily Blunt as Oppenheimer’s wife Kitty, Matt Damon as Leslie Groves Jr., Robert Downey Jr. as Lewis Strauss, Gary Oldman as Harry S. Truman, and many more rounding out the pivotal players in and around this tense moment in history.

“You realise this is a huge responsibility. He was complicated and contradictory and so iconic,” Murphy said. “But you know you’re with one of the great directors of all time. I felt confident going into it with Chris. He’s had a profound impact on my life, creatively and professionally. He’s offered me very interesting roles over and I’ve found all of them really challenging. And I just love being on his sets.”

Murphy continued: “Any actor would want to be on a Chris Nolan set, just to see how it works and to witness his command of the language of film and the mechanics of film and how he’s able to use that broad canvas within the mainstream studio system to make these very challenging human stories.”

<iframe allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hflCiNtY6MA" title="YouTube video player" width="560"></iframe>

Over the years, Murphy has come to appreciate that with Nolan there’s always something deeper to discover than what’s literally on the page. Dunkirk, he recalled, was only 70 pages and there wasn’t much to his character, not even a name.

“He said, ’Look, let’s figure it out together and you and me can find an emotional journey for the character. And we did it. We did it out in the water on that boat. That comes from trust and respect,” Murphy said. “I’m really proud of that performance.”

As with all Nolan endeavors, secrecy around Oppenheimer is vitally important. Murphy loves the “old fashioned approach” that builds interest and anticipation.

The difference with Oppenheimer and other Nolan originals, though, is that this is rooted in historical fact. You can read the book it’s based on, Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. You can watch the 1981 documentary The Day After Trinity&nbsp;on The Criterion Channel.

And you can try to parse Nolan’s words for clues. He’s talked about recreating the Trinity Test, the fascinating paradoxes, the twists, turns and ethical dilemmas and that the story is cinematic and both dream and nightmare. But ultimately, it’s something that just needs to be seen.

“The question will be how Chris presents it,” Murphy said. “I think people will be very surprised and wowed by what he does. Anything I say will just seem a bit lame as compared to seeing this in an IMAX theater.”

The time for discussions will be after the movie comes out.

“There’s an awful lot to talk about when we can talk freely,” Murphy said with a smile.

He did offer up that they worked hard to get Oppenheimer’s look right, from the silhouette to the pipe to the porkpie hat. The man, he said, “seemed aware of his own potential mythology.” But, again, those conversations will have to wait.

“I’m really proud of the movie and I’m really proud of what Chris has achieved. This was, for sure, a special one, certainly because of the history with me and Chris. We were not walking around the set high fiving, but it did feel special.” Murphy said. “It’s an event every time he releases a film, and rightly so. Whether I’m in them or not, I always go to see his movies.”

Cillian Murphy: Christopher Nolan will 'surprise and wow' people with Oppenheimer

In the early morning of July 16, 1945, J Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist, and director of the Manhattan Project, watched as the world's first nuclear bomb exploded in the New Mexico desert. The blast was so powerful that it lit up the sky like a second sun, and Oppenheimer later recalled that he thought of a verse from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita just then: "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one." It was one other verse from the scripture that he spoke of and has come to be deeply associated with him. Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, is in his universal form, and proclaims to Arjun: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds."&nbsp;

The technology that Oppenheimer helped develop served as the basis of Little Boy and Fat Man, two atomic bombs that laid waste to the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. The bombings effectively ended World War II, as Imperial Japan surrendered.

Oppenheimer had been instrumental in the development of nuclear weapons, but witnessing the destructive power of the bomb he helped invent made him question the morality of what he had done. In the years that followed, he became an outspoken advocate for nuclear disarmament, a stunning transformation that actually came very quickly after the destruction in Japan.

<h2>Who was J Robert Oppenheimer?</h2>

Born in New York City in 1904, Oppenheimer was a child prodigy with a passion for science. He studied at Harvard University and the Christ's College, Cambridge, and in the 1930s, he became involved in the study of atomic physics. In 1942, he was recruited by the US government to work on the Manhattan Project, a top-secret program to develop the world's first nuclear bomb.

Oppenheimer was appointed as the director of the Los Alamos laboratory in New Mexico, where the bomb was designed and built. He oversaw a team of thousands of scientists, engineers, and support staff, and he worked tirelessly to ensure that the bomb was ready for use as soon as possible. Despite his efforts, the bomb was not completed in time to be used in the European theatre of World War II, but it was ultimately, as describe above, used to devastating effect against Japan.

<h2>Oppenheimer, the unlikely apostle of peace</h2>

Only 11 days after the bombings in Japan, Oppenheimer urged then-US president Harry S. Truman to ban nuclear weapons. But the president was by now worried about Soviet Union's aggression and paid him no heed. Oppenheimer also told Truman that he (Oppenheimer) had blood on his hands.&nbsp;

It is believed by scholars that Oppenheimer's request to Truman was not actually driven by the death and destruction in Japan, but by the possibility of further devastation that atomic weapons in the future could bring.

Oppenheimer had become disillusioned with the technology he had helped create. He began to publicly speak out against the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and he became an advocate for arms control and disarmament.

He strongly opposed the development and test of the H-bomb, a weapon with far greater destructive power than the original atomic bomb, in 1952. But his opposition to the bomb did not go down well with the government. It was the time of McCarthyism, after all — a time of intense anti-communist suspicion and persecution of dissenting voices. He was removed from the Atomic Energy Commission.

In 1954, Oppenheimer's political views came under scrutiny when he was accused of being a security risk by the US government. During the height of the Cold War, Oppenheimer's past associations with left-wing political groups and his vocal opposition to nuclear testing made him a target of suspicion for many in the government.

Despite his contributions to the Manhattan Project, Oppenheimer was ultimately stripped of his security clearance and barred from further government work. In the years that followed, Oppenheimer continued to speak out against nuclear weapons, and became a prominent voice in the anti-nuclear movement.&nbsp;

<h2>The threat of nuclear weapons in the present time</h2>

The devastating impact of nuclear weapons is something that cannot be understated, with the potential to annihilate entire cities and leave a lasting impact on the environment for years to come. A full-fledged nuclear war would obliterate all life from earth. Moreover, the rise of non-state actors and terrorist groups has added a new dimension to the threat of nuclear weapons. The possibility of nuclear weapons falling into the wrong hands and being used for malicious purposes is hard to ignore. In the decades following Oppenheimer's death in 1967, there have been several scares, but until now, his fears have blessedly not come to pass.

<h2>Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer</h2>

Oppenheimer's story will be explored on the big screen with Christopher Nolan's upcoming biopic of the scientist, titled simply Oppenheimer. The film, which is set to star Cillian Murphy in the role, promises to be a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of Oppenheimer's life and legacy. The film also features Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett, and Kenneth Branagh in the cast.

In the early morning of July 16, 1945, J Robert Oppenheimer, a physicist, and director of the Manhattan Project, watched as the world's first nuclear bomb exploded in the New Mexico desert. The blast was so powerful that it lit up the sky like a second sun, and Oppenheimer later recalled that he thought of a verse from the Hindu scripture the Bhagavad Gita just then: "If the radiance of a thousand suns were to burst at once into the sky, that would be like the splendor of the mighty one." It was one other verse from the scripture that he spoke of and has come to be deeply associated with him. Lord Krishna, an incarnation of Vishnu, is in his universal form, and proclaims to Arjun: "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." Explained | The mind of Oppenheimer, inventor of nuclear bomb who turned pacifist

Christopher Nolan's movies are events unto themselves. His next, Oppenheimer, if you pardon my crude pun, is going to blow up the big screens worldwide in July this year. The star-studded biopic follows the life and times of one J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist who is called the "father of the atomic bomb" for his contribution to the Manhattan Project, which led the invention of the first atomic bomb. Cillian Murphy essays the role of Oppenheimer. But the film has a veritable army of big names in the supporting cast, including Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, Benny Safdie, Michael Angarano, Josh Hartnett and Kenneth Branagh.

During his presentation, Nolan was welcomed with a hero's reception, erupting in cheers and whistles, as per The Hollywood Reporter. Footage from the movie was also screened during the presentation.&nbsp;

"In learning about that story, I wanted to be there in that room with them and see what that must have been like. I wanted to take the audience there. To do so, I’ve assembled the most incredible cast and the finest technicians," said Nolan.

He added, "Like it or not, J. Robert Oppenheimer is the most important person who ever lived. He made the world we live in — for better or for worse. And his story has to be seen to be believed, and I am certainly hopeful audiences will come to your theaters to see it on the biggest screens possible.”

This is the first project by Nolan in more than two decades that does not involve Warner Bros, the studio with which he had a falling out over the release strategy of his last pic, the science-fiction action-thriller Tenet.

Hoyte van Hoytema, who Nolan also collaborated with on Interstellar and Dunkirk, will handle the camera. Jennifer Lame is the editor. Ludwig Göransson has written the background score, returning from Tenet.

Who, really, was Oppenheimer?

Oppenheimer has a complicated legacy. It is said that he regretted helping build the most destructive weapons humanity has ever seen. The project he worked on directly resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths in Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He later famously quoted the Bhagvan Gita, saying “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds,” referring to how his invention cost the lives of so many.

Oppenheimer releases on&nbsp;&nbsp;July 21.

Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer': Everything you need to know

There is nothing ace filmmaker Christopher Nolan cannot do to keep things real in his films and his latest revelation about his much-anticipated movie 'Oppenheimer' proves the same. The 52-year-old recently revealed that he recreated the first nuclear weapon detonation without using any VFX or CGI effects for his upcoming movie.

Nolan shared that he favours practical effects over VFX. And, that is quite evident in his work as he once blew up a real Boeing 747 to shoot an important scene for 'Tenet'.

While speaking to Total Film magazine, the director said, "I think recreating the Trinity test (the first nuclear weapon detonation, in New Mexico) without the use of computer graphics was a huge challenge to take on."&nbsp;

"Andrew Jackson, my visual effects supervisor, I got him on board early on, was looking at how we could do a lot of the visual elements of the film practically, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating, with my team, Los Alamos up on a mesa in New Mexico in extraordinary weather, a lot of which was needed for the film, in terms of the very harsh conditions out there,&nbsp;there were huge practical challenges," Nolan added.

Nolan's film is based on nuclear physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who was universally regarded as the "father of the atomic bomb". He was also&nbsp;the director of the Manhattan Project, which was a research and development undertaking during World War II that produced the first nuclear weapons.

Speaking further about the film in the interview, Nolan shared that 'Oppenheimer' is a "story of immense scope and scale".

"It's one of the most challenging projects I've ever taken on in terms of the scale of it, and in terms of encountering the breadth of Oppenheimer's story. There were big, logistical challenges, big practical challenges," he shared.

The director continued, "I had an extraordinary crew, and they really stepped up. It will be a while before we're finished. Certainly, as I watch the results come in, and as I'm putting the film together, I'm thrilled with what my team has been able to achieve."

Starring Martin J. Sherwin. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh, 'Oppenehimer' will hit the theatres on July 21, 2023.

Certainly, as I watch the results come in, and as I'm putting the film together, I'm thrilled with what my team has been able to achieve." Starring Martin J. Sherwin. Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., and Florence Pugh, 'Oppenehimer' will hit the theatres on July 21, 2023. Our first look teaser at Christopher Nolan's next feature 'Oppenheimer' is finally here. It is likely the same teaser that the fans at the recently concluded San Diego Comic-Con were treated with. The film is a biographical take on the titular American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, who is remembered as the father of the atomic bomb for his contribution to the invention of the most destructive weapon the world had ever seen at the height of World War II. Played by Irish actor Cillian Murphy, a notable Nolan regular, the film explores his life and the circumstances surrounding the big invention and the destruction of life and property it wreaked on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The teaser begins with a voiceover that says, "The source from which the sun draws its power has been loosed." Then we see Murphy walking down the corridor in a suit and top hat, surrounded by photographers eager to capture the moment. The scene is in monochrome, but the entire film is likely in full colour.

We see the visuals of the fiery mushroom cloud that engulfed the two cities and obliterated all signs of life from them. Another voiceover says, “The world is changing, reforming. This is your moment." Perhaps Emily Blunt, who plays the role of Oppenheimer's wife Katherine Oppenheimer.&nbsp;

The teaser, probably wisely, does not show much of the film and the plot it will follow, but nevertheless leaves one intrigued. The man or, shall we say, character the film is based on makes for an interesting study, and now that Murphy is in the cast, there probably cannot be a more suitable person to play the role. He not only looks the part, but his dramatic chops will ensure he will do justice to the script (also penned by Nolan).

He also opposed the creation of the hydrogen bomb, which would go on to make the atomic bomb look like a squib.
