Indian women's hockey team has qualified for the quarter-finals at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics after&nbsp;Great Britain defeated Ireland 2-0 in the last game of Pool A. As a result, the Indian women's team finished at the fourth spot in Pool A and hence progressed to the next round.&nbsp;

After losing the second of his 2016 Rio Olympic backstroke titles to Russian Evgeny Rylov on Friday an unhappy Murphy hinted doping had played a part in his demise.

Murphy later walked back his comments saying they were not directed specifically at his Russian rivals but at the sport which he said still has a big doping problem.

The Russian Olympic Committee hit back on Twitter labelling U.S. complaints as nothing more than sour grapes, prompting a fiery response from USADA chief Travis Tygart.

"The Russian state and sport officials put the dark cloud over themselves and in the process, tragically, pushed their athletes out in the storm," fumed Tygart in an email to Reuters.

"Now these officials want to continue to lie, deny and attack those with the courage to stand up to their deceit and blatant disregard for the rules and the truth.

"That’s fine because we all know if you cheat, you have no problem lying about your cheating."

Along with Russia, Tygart also took aim at two other familiar targets - the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) - for what USADA has viewed as a limp response to Russian doping scandals.

Russia is competing in Tokyo as representatives of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) because the country was stripped of its flag and anthem for doping offences, a punishment that Tygart has decried as a joke.

"Unfortunately, we’ve seen this horror film already – where the Russian state-sponsored doping programme walks free and Russia wins while the IOC and WADA leaders attempt to pull the wool over the world’s eyes by claiming Russia is ‘banned.’," said Tygart.

"All can now see this ‘ban’ once again for the farce that it is.

"It is barely a ‘rebrand’ and will do nothing to stop the corruption in Russia and likely will embolden others willing to win by any means.

"It’s a doomed system that allows, as it has here, one nation to make a mockery of the Games by their thirst for medals over values."

Tygart challenged the ROC that if they want the world to stop questioning them about doping then make test results public.

"They should put their money where their rhetoric is by making individual tests by athlete name public and allow a transparent international accounting of the reality of whether things have changed within Russia, as the evidence of the last years is that nothing has unfortunately," Tygart said.

"I’m surprised by the gold medal," Litvinovich, who turned 20 last month and still has braces on his teeth, told reporters.

"I had been aiming for a second or third place. I don’t have any strong emotions right now. I think those came up when I saw the score," he said, adding that he had expected Hancharou to be in the top three.

Dong, who took gold in London in 2012, was fifth after qualifications but managed to power higher after a stunning routine, overtaking Hancharou, who had come into the finals in second place but fell to fourth.

"This medal means a lot to me," Dong said.

Schmidt said he could hardly believe the results.

"I put so much into this performance, it is honestly pretty surreal but a really good feeling to win this medal for myself and for my country, I'm super proud to make history," said Schmidt. "Can't believe it really.

"I was sitting in second with two to go it was second, third or fourth so when I popped up above Vlad (Hancharou) I was over the moon."

Germany's independent elite athletes grouping Athleten Deutschland have urged the IOC to act.

"It... appears grotesque that athletes who test positive have to spend their quarantine in prison-like conditions, while IOC members stay in expensive luxury hotels and are provided with high daily allowances," said Maximilian Klein, Athleten Deutschland's representative for international sport policy.

Among the biggest issues are lack of fresh air and training facilities, the quality of food, small living quarters and an absence of basic amenities such as laundry.

"It's unfortunately for all of us but particularly also the athletes the extra measures that have to be taken in terms of isolation and we fully sympathise with everyone who's had to go through this," said IOC spokesman Mark Adams.

"There are certain regulations that the Japanese health authorities imposed - we can't do much about that - but there are things that can be done."

Tokyo Games spokesperson Masa Takaya said organisers had managed to provide more space for them outside their rooms while teammates could bring food.

"The situation has been improved and we are trying to implement a more flexible approach to accommodate these positive cases," Takaya said. "We would like to extend our sincere sympathies to them. It must be a heart-wrenching feeling (to test positive at the&nbsp;Olympics)."

Athleten Deutschland said conditions were currently not good.

"In the current quarantine hotel, for example, there is an insufficient provision of fresh air. The food supply is neither rich nor balanced and does not meet the specific nutritional requirements of high-performance athletes," it said in a statement.

"It is unclear to them what the exact procedure of quarantine is and what steps have to be taken after it is over."

So far dozens of athletes and team staff have been quarantined at the Games, with 21 new Games-related COVID-19 cases record on Saturday for a total of 241 infections since July 1. Not all of these are athletes.

Tatjana Schoenmaker won the women`s 200m breaststroke on Friday in a world record time of 2:18.95 to deliver South Africa`s first gold medal of the Tokyo Games.

Djokovic has never won the Olympic singles title, with a bronze medal in 2008 his best result at the Games, but will face either Alexander Zverev or Jeremy Chardy in the last four.

"Matches are not getting easier, but my level of tennis is getting better and better.

The 34-year-old Serb, who has already captured the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledon titles this season, was never in trouble against Nishikori, who made 16 unforced errors.

After losing to Titmus for a second time in Tokyo with a disappointing fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle, there was some consolation for Katie Ledecky with the American winning the inaugural 1,500 freestyle gold to capture her sixth Olympic title.

World record holder Kristof Milak of Hungary powered to the men's butterfly 200m gold, despite being forced into a last-minute change of swimming trunks.

The women's 200 freestyle, part two of Titmus's 'duel in the pool' with Ledecky, turned instead into a battle with Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey with Canada's Penny Oleksiak third.

Titmus won in a time of 1:53.50 while Ledecky, the defending gold medallist, finished a distant 1.71 behind the Australian.

"I’m bloody exhausted," said Titmus. "That was a tough race. I knew Siobhan would be hard to beat. I could tell from the way she swam (in her heat) yesterday it would be tough to beat her,"

Once again the 20-year-old Titmus, dubbed 'The Terminator', delivered a blistering final lap -- she had been in third place at the 150m turn with Haughey in the lead.

Titmus had beaten Ledecky to gold in the 400m freestyle on Monday and she becomes the first Australian woman to complete the 200-400 Olympic double since Shane Gould at the 1972 Munich Games.

Ledecky made sure she will not leave Japan empty-handed however with her comfortable victory in the 1,500 freestyle, with teammate Erica Sullivan picking up silver and German Sarah Kohler bronze.

"I’m so happy. It was a little one-two, which is very cool," she said. "You couldn’t have a better outcome than that ... after the 200 I knew I had to turn the page pretty quick."

As for her disappointment in the showdown with Titmus, Ledecky was philosophical.

"Maybe people feel bad for me not winning everything. But I want people to be more concerned about other things going on in the world," she said.

Titmus and Ledecky are expected to face each other in the 800m freestyle on Saturday in which the American is heavily favoured, and they will also be on opposite sides in the 4x200m relay.

'A BIT GUTTED'

Ohashi, who won the women's 400m medley on Sunday, produced her own double with victory in the 200m medley ahead of Americans Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass.

Walsh lead at the 150m mark but Ohashi pipped her over the final, freestyle leg, of the race to delight her Japanese teammates in the spectator-free arena.

"Seems like a dream," said Ohashi. "It doesn’t feel real. In the last 15 it was really hard, my legs were really hurting but I just kept kicking."

After individual golds for Adam Peaty and Tom Dean, Britain's success in the pool continued with the quartet of Dean, Duncan Scott, James Guy and Matthew Richards coming within touching distance of a world record in the relay.

It is the first time since 1908 that Britain have won three swimming golds at one Games.

The British team won in six minutes, 58.58 -- just three hundredths shy of the world record set by the United States in 2009.

"It was so close to the world record in the end, if anything, I'm a bit gutted," said Scott.

They finished 3.23 seconds clear of the Russian team while Australia claimed the bronze.

The United States finished fourth, the first time they have not medalled in this event, aside from the boycotted Moscow Olympics.

Hungarian Milak lived up to his billing as the heavy favourite in the butterfly ahead of Japan's Tomoru Honda with Italy's Federico Burdisso taking bronze.

His time of 1:51.25 was an Olympic record, surpassing Michael Phelps' mark from an event he once dominated.

Phelps had set the previous Olympic record of 1:52.03 in Beijing. Milak's world record of 1:50.73 came at the world championships in Gwangju in 2019.

His time might have been even faster if not for a mishap with his swimming trunks which forced a quick change.

Showing reporters a ripped pair of trunks, he said: “They split 10 minutes before I entered the pool and in that moment I knew the world record was gone.

"I lost my focus and knew I couldn’t do it ... but I am happy with the gold medal."
