The man who was found guilty of raping and impregnating a 9-year-old Ohio girl, who had to travel out of state to end her pregnancy, was on Wednesday sentenced to life imprisonment.

28-year-old Gerson Fuentes entered a plea agreement which will make him eligible to seek parole after serving 25 to 30 years. If granted parole, Fuentes would then have to register as a sex offender.

As per AP reports, Common Pleas Court Judge Julie Lynch, who wasn't required to approve the plea agreement, said that the girl’s family “begged” the judge to back it. Lynch called the deal a “very hard pill for this court to swallow.”

“Anyone who’s ever been in this courtroom for the last 20 years knows how this court feels about these babies, young people, being violated,” AP quoted Lynch as saying. “However, today, by the request of the family, this court will be sentencing without comment.”&nbsp;

The maximum sentence would have been life without parole. Settling the case before trial would excuse the survivor from having to testify in court.

Zachary Olah, an attorney who represented Fuentes, told The Columbus Dispatch after the hearing that his client has been cooperative since the beginning.

“He was anxious to get this resolved,” Olah said.

The girl turned 10 before having the abortion. According to Franklin County prosecutors, she confirmed that Fuentes attacked her.&nbsp;

Nearly 25 states have either banned or imposed restrictions on abortion since the Supreme Court struck down Roe, though many of the new laws are still being litigated.

A mother in Ohio named&nbsp;Kristel Candelario, aged 31 and residing in Cleveland, has been accused of murder after allegedly abandoning her 16-month-old child at home while she went on vacation to Puerto Rico and Detroit.

City officials revealed that Candelario left her child unattended from June 8 to June 16. Upon her return on Friday, June 16, she discovered her daughter&nbsp;unresponsive.

Following the incident, law enforcement authorities swiftly intervened. The toddler was promptly transported from the Cudell neighborhood's 3100 block on West 97th Street to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner by local authorities. However, the medical examiner has not yet disclosed the cause of the toddler's&nbsp;death.

Investigations revealed that the child was severely dehydrated, leading to her untimely demise.

Candelario was apprehended in connection with her daughter's death. Suleyn Gonzalez, a neighbour, informed WOIO, a CBS affiliate, that the grandmother typically took care of the baby in her absence. Gonzalez expressed her dismay, stating, "(The baby's) mom always wanted to go out and just left her with her grandma and all that."

Candelario is now facing charges of murder and is scheduled to appear in court on June 28 for a pre-trial hearing, reported&nbsp;Newsweek.

The police in a statement identified the victim. They said: "On April 20, 2023, at 12:50 am, Columbus Police officers were dispatched to the 1000 block of W. Broad St. on a reported shooting. Upon arrival, the officers located an adult male victim, identified as SAIESH VEERA, M/O/24, suffering from a gunshot wound."

Rohit Yalamanchili, who is overseeing the online fundraiser, said that the deceased youth's graduation from his master's course was just 10 days away. Veera was reportedly the first in his family to have travelled to the US for studies.&nbsp;His father had passed away two years prior.

Almost a month after the tragic derailment near the Pennsylvania border in East Palestine, Ohio, the US Justice Department on Thursday filed a lawsuit against the transportation provider Norfolk Southern Corp seeking damages for alleged Clean Water Act violations.&nbsp;

The US lawsuit was filed Thursday on behalf of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) seeks to hold Norfolk Southern "accountable for unlawfully polluting the nation’s waterways and to ensure it pays the full cost of the environmental cleanup," as per CNN.&nbsp;

Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a Friday release said, “With this complaint, the Justice Department and the EPA are acting to pursue justice for the residents of East Palestine and ensure that Norfolk Southern carries the financial burden for the harm it has caused and continues to inflict on the community."&nbsp;

On 3 February, 38 cars of Norfold cargo train including 11 carrying hazardous materials derailed and resulted in the release of over 1 million gallons of hazardous materials in the environment, as per Ohio's Attorney General Dave Yost.

EPA Administrator Michael Regan said “no community should have to go through what East Palestine residents have faced.”

Earlier this month, Ohio had also sued Norfolk Southern. Yost in Mid-March alleged&nbsp;that Norfolk Southern breached&nbsp;several local, state, and federal laws&nbsp;as well as the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of Ohio (CERCLA).

“This derailment was entirely avoidable,” Yost had told earlier this month. “I’m concerned that Norfolk Southern may be putting profits for their own company above the health and safety of the cities and communities they operate in.”

While railroad workers burnt off a dangerous chemical from five tanker cars of the cargo train, thousands of people of eastern Ohio were under evacuation orders.

The ages of the victims and other details weren't immediately available. No arrests have been reported so far.

A leak of a chemical substance resulted in plume dispersion in New Albany skies in Floyd County, in US state of Indiana on Monday (local time), as per reports by WLKY television station.&nbsp;&nbsp;

According to Kent Barrow, the Floyd County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director, the leak was detected Tuesday at a Blue Grass Chemical Specialties facility on Industrial Boulevard.&nbsp;The leak was reported at 10:15 am and now the officials are trying to understand what led to the incident.&nbsp;

Barrow said that a tank containing nitrate solution leaked due to overflow. The solution was used to clean metal.&nbsp;After the leak, a visible yellow plume was released into the air.&nbsp;

However, the officials now claim that the plume has since dissipated, even as it is yet to be ascertained how much of the nitrate solution overflowed and the level of plume released in the air.&nbsp;

Paul McCauley, vice president at Blue Grass Specialties, confirmed that the incident does not pose any threat to the public but cautioned that breathing in the affected area is still not good.&nbsp;

He said that inhaling the plume could lead to&nbsp;respiratory issues.&nbsp;On chemical spill, the New Albany Mayor Jeff Gahan said, "I spoke with Blue Grass Chemical Specialties's chemical engineer, and he informed me that the smoke was a form of nitrogen oxide that is not harmful at these quantities."&nbsp;

"There was no explosion or fire at the plant, and the reaction has stopped. Emergency Management crews, after utilising gas monitors on site, have now given the all clear for the area. The yellow smoke has dissipated from the area and affected roadways are open," Gahan added.&nbsp;

What is significant to note is that even as the inside of the plant was "contaminated" with the plume, it did not result in hospitalisation of anyone and that everyone inside the facility was safe.&nbsp;An internal investigation will be able to unlock the mystery behind the overflow of the solution.&nbsp;

This is the first time that a leak of this level has been recorded at&nbsp;the facility as this is not an isolated incident and a leak&nbsp;happened before as well.&nbsp;

The officials asked Mount Tabor Elementary and people nearby the plant to shelter in place. However, it was lifted just after noon. Interstate-265 highway was briefly shut down however has now been reopened.&nbsp;

The impacts of exposure from the railway crash are not yet known, but it will be important to monitor vinyl chloride concentrations in the area for years to come because the severe effects have a long latency.

Meanwhile, contaminants from burning vinyl chloride, such as dioxin, and other compounds that leak, such as butyl acrylate, can contaminate water sources for years and spread across watersheds and underground aquifers that provide drinking water.

An analysis of data from the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.epa.gov/oh/east-palestine-ohio-train-derailment-emergency-response">US Environmental Protection Agency</a>’s&nbsp;measurements of pollutants released from the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, suggests if the concentrations of certain of these pollutants continue to be high, it may eventually pose a risk to the residents' health. The compounds could be stirred up by temperature changes or strong winds and released into the atmosphere.

According to the research, acrolein was a molecule that was most abundant in East Palestine.

Plants, algae, rodents, and microbes can all be treated by acrolein. The substance is poisonous and clear at room temperature. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can irritate and cause inflammation of the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory system.

The derailment was reported in Ohio's East Palestine region, about 15 miles south of Youngstown.&nbsp;Mayor Trent Conaway said firefighters from three states responded due to the location of the derailment about 51 miles (82 kilometres) northwest of Pittsburgh and within 20 miles (32 kilometres) of the tip of West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle.

The killing of an Indian American family in Ohio state has stoked fears within the diaspora community who are now calling for an urgent need to tackle mental health.

On January 18, Anish Rajan Rajaram was found dead alongside his mother and father in his Dublin home.

The police reached their house around 2 am after a friend of theirs reported that he had not heard from them.

During the initial investigation, it was found that they died by firearm and have been deceased for several days. Officers did not observe signs of forced entry to the home. The Dublin Police suspect&nbsp;that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. Police have been working to notify the next of kin before identifying the victims.

The incident sent a shock wave amongst the community as this was the third disturbing occurrence reported from the Indian American in a month.

Earlier this month, an Indian man named Param Sharma was arrested in San Francisco for endangering his wife and kids as he drove his car off a cliff.

In the second week of January, a Houston man named Subramaniam Ponnazhakan stabbed his 9-year-old only son.

Rajni Mehra, an Ohio resident who was informed of the family's death through a WhatsApp forward, said she was shocked by the incident.

"This happened in my city. Dublin is a small, peaceful city. It shakes you to know that people may be fighting personal battles," she told American Bazaar outlet.

Another resident, Rachna Bhasin, said there was an urgent to address mental health among the Indian American community, and demanded a counselling service for the community.

"We are all immigrants and truth be told we all feel lonely at a certain level. Lack of any trustworthy sources to seek help in case of depression and little or no emphasis on mental well-being can have negative impacts."
