In a shocking incident in the US state of Ohio, a 17-month-old toddler was admitted to the ICU after sustaining burns during a police raid where officers deployed flash-bang devices. The mayor of the city of Elyria has since ordered an investigation into the incident after a woman alleged that police officers who raided her home had the wrong address.

‘It’s the wrong house’

The police and the resident have given conflicting accounts of what happened on January 10, during the raid on a residence in the 300 block of Parmely Avenue.

In a statement, on Friday (Jan 12) the Ohio police said that they executed a search warrant at the correct address as part of a criminal investigation and the child did not “sustain any apparent, visible injuries.”

However, the toddler’s mother Courtney Price told NBC News that audio from her security camera says otherwise. In the audio shared with the media, on Tuesday (Jan 16) someone can be heard saying, “It’s the wrong house.”

It was not immediately clear who made the remark as the police deployed flashbangs also known as stun grenades – a device that produces a bright flash and a loud noise to stun or disorient people without causing serious injury.

The police broke a window and deployed the device near her 17-month-old son Waylon who was already on a ventilator. “All I seen was lights flashing and smoke coming into the house,” she told CBS News.

“I didn’t know what to do because there was guns pointed at me. I wanted to run to him, but I knew if I ran to him...they could’ve shot,” Price added. According to media reports, Courtney and her son were the only ones home at the time of the raid.

“I kept screaming, ‘My baby, my baby is on a ventilator. My baby’s in here’,” Price said.

Speaking to the local media, Reida Jennings, who rented the house to the Price family said the mother and her son were staying with her as Waylon waited for his surgery for a heart defect.

“The baby is now in the ICU. He’s got burns all over him, inside of his lungs are burned,” Jennings told WJW.

She said that the Ring camera footage showed that the flashbang hit Waylon and alleged that the police let the toddler “lay there for about 35 to 45 minutes in the smoke.”

‘Serious and disturbing’

Elyria Mayor Kevin Brubaker called the incident “serious and disturbing.” He added, “The allegations against our police department are extreme and deeply concerning…I have ordered a complete review of the incident and requested all information be released to the public as soon as possible.”

The mayor’s office released over two hours of footage from the body cams worn by eight officers, on Tuesday (Jan 16).

Price told WOIO that Waylon had been diagnosed with chemical pneumonitis after the raid which she said was caused due to the chemicals released by the flash-bangs.

The Elyria Police Department has since denied the allegations. “Any allegation suggesting the child was exposed to chemical agents, lack of medical attention or negligence is not true,” said the police in a statement.

Ohio voters on Tuesday (Nov 7) approved a ballot measure to legalise recreational marijuana, delivering a major blow to Republicans who failed to instate a proposed law.

In a resounding victory for reproductive rights supporters, Ohio voters decisively rejected Issue 1, a Republican-backed ballot measure aiming to heighten the difficulty of enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution.

This outcome signifies a significant advancement in the ongoing struggle to safeguard women's reproductive freedoms.

At the core of Issue 1 was a proposition to elevate the requirement for future state constitutional amendments to attain 60 per cent support, a significant increase from the existing simple majority mandate.

The intention was to complicate the inclusion of abortion rights within Ohio's constitution.

Moreover, the measure sought to impose more stringent regulations on groups seeking to introduce ballot initiatives by mandating signatures from voters across all 88 Ohio counties, up from the current 44 counties.

The proposal also aimed to abolish a 10-day "curing" interval during which groups could replace invalidated signatures.

Decisive rejection of Issue 1

According to projections by the Associated Press, Ohio voters unequivocally dismissed Issue 1. With 97 per cent of precincts reporting, 56.7 per cent of voters opposed the measure, while 43.3 per cent supported it.

Consequently, any forthcoming amendment addressing abortion rights on the November ballot will necessitate only a simple majority for incorporation into Ohio's constitution.

A strategic blow to restrictive abortion measures

The defeat of Issue 1 was celebrated by reproductive rights advocates and Democrats, who had consistently asserted that the measure aimed to obstruct their pro-choice stance in the November ballot.

The revelation of admissions by several Republican state legislators that Issue 1 was strategically designed to hinder abortion rights lent further validation to these claims.

This triumph underscores the potency of abortion rights as a pivotal political factor. Ongoing polling consistently indicates substantial public support for abortion protections.

Democrats have adeptly harnessed this sentiment to achieve pivotal electoral successes.

This strategic approach is exemplified by the victories of abortion-rights proponents in all seven states where similar issues were on the ballot since the Roe vs Wade decision.

Political implications

The Ohio ballot measure's outcome reverberates beyond the state's borders, highlighting abortion's contentious status for GOP candidates.

The defeat of Issue 1 carries substantial implications for the forthcoming 2024 elections. Notably, key Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence, expressed their endorsement of Issue 1, amplifying the measure's national significance.

A strategic blow to restrictive abortion measures The defeat of Issue 1 was celebrated by reproductive rights advocates and Democrats, who had consistently asserted that the measure aimed to obstruct their pro-choice stance in the November ballot. Also watch | US Army chief of staff steps down as abortion row holds up Pentagon appointments Democrats have adeptly harnessed this sentiment to achieve pivotal electoral successes. This strategic approach is exemplified by the victories of abortion-rights proponents in all seven states where similar issues were on the ballot since the Roe vs Wade decision. Political implications The Ohio ballot measure's outcome reverberates beyond the state's borders, highlighting abortion's contentious status for GOP candidates. The defeat of Issue 1 carries substantial implications for the forthcoming 2024 elections. Notably, key Republicans, including former Vice President Mike Pence, expressed their endorsement of Issue 1, amplifying the measure's national significance.
A mother in Ohio named Kristel Candelario, aged 31 and residing in Cleveland, has been accused of murder after allegedly abandoning her 16-month-old child at home while she went on vacation to Puerto Rico and Detroit.

City officials revealed that Candelario left her child unattended from June 8 to June 16. Upon her return on Friday, June 16, she discovered her daughter unresponsive.

Following the incident, law enforcement authorities swiftly intervened. The toddler was promptly transported from the Cudell neighborhood's 3100 block on West 97th Street to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner by local authorities. However, the medical examiner has not yet disclosed the cause of the toddler's death.

Investigations revealed that the child was severely dehydrated, leading to her untimely demise.

Candelario was apprehended in connection with her daughter's death. Suleyn Gonzalez, a neighbour, informed WOIO, a CBS affiliate, that the grandmother typically took care of the baby in her absence. Gonzalez expressed her dismay, stating, "(The baby's) mom always wanted to go out and just left her with her grandma and all that."

Candelario is now facing charges of murder and is scheduled to appear in court on June 28 for a pre-trial hearing, reported Newsweek.

Indiana: Yellow chemical plume disperses in New Albany, investigation underway

Many residents of East Palestine, Ohio, have now returned to their homes, after Norfolk Southern train derailed earlier this month and dumped more than 100,000 gallons of hazardous chemicals into the air and water.

The track has been cleaned and the enormous cloud of smoke from the burning vinyl chloride has drifted away. Rail service has resumed in the town.

Nonetheless, the 4,700 people of East Palestine claim that they continue to smell chemical residue in the air, notice an oily sheen in the water, and feel queasy and sick. The disaster's long-term ramifications are a growing source of concern, as reported by Vox.

Pete Buttigieg, the secretary of transportation, visited East Palestine this week and expressed regret for his delay in addressing the derailment. President Joe Biden was criticised for travelling to Ukraine this week rather than Ohio by former President Donald Trump, who also paid a visit to the region, as reported by AFP.

Other government representatives are attempting to reassure the public that most of the risk has subsided. Mike DeWine, the governor of Ohio, and Michael Regan, the administrator of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), visited East Palestine this week and drank tap water at a resident's house, as per a Vox report.

“You don’t know who to trust. That’s a big part of it — the uncertainty. You don’t know if you’re going to have to move,” one resident, Carolyn Brown, told ABC News. “We need to feel that we’re safe.”

What lies ahead for the people of East Palestine, Ohio?

The National Transportation Safety Board found that 11 of the 38 vehicles that derailed on February 3 contained hazardous chemicals. These substances included flammable carcinogenic gases like vinyl chloride and poisonous flammable liquids like butyl acrylate. The situation was made more difficult by some leaks, flaring, and burns.

“Each of the chemicals that leaked are respiratory irritants, and some of their breakdown products are also irritants,” said Marilyn Howarth, an environmental toxicologist at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who spoke to Vox.

Researchers studying occupational health have shown that employees who are frequently exposed to substances like vinyl chloride had greater incidences of liver cancer.

As per Howarth, the signal may not appear for 20 years or more. Unlike the population of East Palestine, these employees were exposed to larger amounts and in confined settings. The impacts of exposure from the railway crash are not yet known, but it will be important to monitor vinyl chloride concentrations in the area for years to come because the severe effects have a long latency.

Meanwhile, contaminants from burning vinyl chloride, such as dioxin, and other compounds that leak, such as butyl acrylate, can contaminate water sources for years and spread across watersheds and underground aquifers that provide drinking water.

An analysis of data from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s measurements of pollutants released from the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio, suggests if the concentrations of certain of these pollutants continue to be high, it may eventually pose a risk to the residents' health. The compounds could be stirred up by temperature changes or strong winds and released into the atmosphere.

According to the research, acrolein was a molecule that was most abundant in East Palestine.

Plants, algae, rodents, and microbes can all be treated by acrolein. The substance is poisonous and clear at room temperature. According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, it can irritate and cause inflammation of the skin, mucous membranes, and respiratory system.

East Palestine's residents will also need to monitor their health, as per Philip Landrigan, head of the public health department at Boston College, who examined 20,000 first responders and rescue personnel in New York City after the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

He told Vox that of the most important takeaways from that research, according to him, was the necessity of routine health checks to identify issues as they developed over time, in addition to determining exactly what was in the dust that people were breathing in.

Who pays for the cleanup?

The cleanup following the train disaster and the response has been mandated by the EPA to be covered by Norfolk Southern. According to the EPA administrator Regan, if they fall short, the rail operator may be fined $70,000 per day.

“Norfolk Southern will pay for the mess that they created and the trauma that they inflicted on this community,” he said during a press conference this week.

Some locals are currently considering suing the railroad company. Norfolk Southern has also pledged to help and provide the town with $5.6 million in financial support, as per ABC news. But, re-establishing confidence between the community and the government will be one of the biggest challenges.

You don’t know if you’re going to have to move,” one resident, Carolyn Brown, told ABC News. “We need to feel that we’re safe.” What lies ahead for the people of East Palestine, Ohio? ALSO WATCH | Ohio train derailment: Environmental disaster East Palestine's residents will also need to monitor their health, as per Philip Landrigan, head of the public health department at Boston College, who examined 20,000 first responders and rescue personnel in New York City after the 9/11 attacks in 2001. WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
