NFL: Chiefs' quarterback Patrick Mahomes named league MVP second time

Recently-retired quarterback Tom Brady said on Monday he will make his highly-anticipated debut as a lead NFL analyst with Fox Sports in the fall of 2024. Speaking during an appearance on Fox Sports' "The Herd with Colin Cowherd", the seven-time Super Bowl champion said he will use the time off to focus on other aspects of his life before beginning preparations for his broadcasting career. "Decompression's really important," Brady said when asked if he needed downtime before stepping into the TV booth to begin his new role as a lead NFL analyst.

"You're on this kind of really crazy treadmill, hamster wheel for a long time, loving the moment and journey. At the same time, it's a daily fight.

"I have appreciation for so many people that are so committed every day to showing up, to put their max effort into their life and career. For me, I want to be great at what I do — talking, even last week, with the people at Fox Sports, and the leadership there, allowing me to start my Fox opportunity in the fall of 2024, something that's great for me," he added.

The 45-year-old Brady, who announced his retirement from the NFL last week after 23 seasons with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, agreed last May to join Fox Sports when his age-defying playing career came to an end. Terms of Brady's deal with Fox Sports were never disclosed but media reports said he agreed to a 10-year contract worth $375 million.

There have been no shortage of players who went on to become football analysts after their NFL careers and Brady, whose intense preparation for games has been well-chronicled, wants to give himself every chance he can to succeed in his next role.

"I'll take some time to really learn, become great at what I want to do, become great at thinking about the opportunity and making sure I don't rush into anything," said Brady. "One thing about my (NFL) career ... I wanted to be fully committed and I never wanted to let people down, I think my biggest motivator was that.

"So even in the future I want to be great at what I do and that always takes some time and strategizing and learning and growing and evolving."

Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin was discharged from hospital in Cincinnati on Monday, just a week after suffering a cardiac arrest during an NFL game, medical staff confirmed. Hamlin was released from the University of Cincinnati Medical Center and flew to Buffalo where he will continue his recovery at another hospital. "We are thrilled and proud to share that Damar Hamlin has been released from the hospital and returned to Buffalo," UC Medical Center said. "He is doing well and this is the next stage of his recovery."

In separate posts on Twitter, Hamlin thanked medical staff in Cincinnati while paying tribute to the outpouring of goodwill across the sporting world. "Grateful for the awesome care I received at UCMC," Hamlin wrote, adding that staff at his new hospital, Buffalo General Medical Center, have "already made me feel at home!" "Watching the world come together around me on Sunday was truly an amazing feeling," Hamlin added in a separate tweet. "The same love you all have shown me is the same love that I plan to put back into the world 'n more." The 24-year-old safety was left in critical condition last Monday after collapsing during the Bills' clash with the Cincinnati Bengals, forcing the abandonment of the game.

The scary incident shocked the sports world and once again drew more scrutiny on the physically punishing nature of America's most popular sport. Hamlin had made steady progress since being admitted to hospital last week, regaining consciousness on Wednesday before addressing team-mates via a video call on Friday. University of Cincinnati Medical Center physician William Knight, who accompanied Hamlin to the airport before his transfer to Buffalo on Monday, cautioned it was still too early to say whether the Bills player would resurrect his NFL career.

"I think we're in the same place -- it's entirely too premature to discuss not only his football, we're focused on his day-to-day recovery," Knight told reporters during a briefing. "He still has a ways to go in terms of his recovery. We're thrilled where he is today. Knight said doctors in Cincinnati had already been in contact with Hamlin's medical carers in Buffalo. "I can confirm he is doing well and this is the beginning of the next stage of his recovery," he said. UCMC physician Timothy Pritts added that Hamlin would face ongoing monitoring and tests to determine what had caused his cardiac arrest last week.

"We continue to be ecstatic about his recovery," Pritts said. "We anticipate that he will undergo an ongoing series of tests and evaluations to determine what caused the incident on Monday night." Pritts meanwhile revealed that Hamlin had watched Buffalo's 35-23 victory over the New England Patriots on Sunday from his hospital room -- and had reacted wildly after team-mate Nyheim Hines returned the opening kick-off 96 yards for a touchdown. "He was beyond excited," Pritts said. "When the opening kick off was run back he jumped up and down, got up out his chair and set off every alarm possible in the ICU in the process.

"It was an appropriate reaction to a very exciting play." Pritts added meanwhile that the normal recovery time for someone in Hamlin's condition was in the range of "weeks to months." "The goal for every patient who has suffered a serious illness or injury is to have them return to as close to baseline as possible," Pritts said. "We anticipate that he will have likely ongoing needs – whether that is therapy or networking with various specialists. "But he appears to be neurologically completely intact and there's no reason to believe that he won't continue his path to recovery."

'He is doing well': Buffalo Bills ace Damar Hamlin discharged from Cincinnati hospital

Damar Hamlin has been able to awaken and communicate with his medical team after the Buffalo Bills safety suffered cardiac arrest on the field during a Monday night NFL game in Cincinnati, his doctors told reporters on Thursday. Two physicians caring for the 24-year-old said he was "demonstrating signs of good neurological recovery" and was able to communicate in writing. Hamlin remains on a ventilator in the intensive care unit (ICU) at University of Cincinnati Medical Center to assist his breathing.

He collapsed on the field after making a tackle in the first quarter of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals and had to have his heartbeat restored on the field. The physicians said Hamlin had in writing asked who won the game. The response: "Damar, you won - you won the game of life," Dr Timothy Pritts said. That he was asking about the outcome of the game showed, "it's not only that the lights are on - he's home," Pritts said. "It appears that all cylinders are firing within his brain, which is greatly gratifying."

Dr William Knight described the last three days for Hamlin as a long and difficult road. "He has been very sick and has made a fairly remarkable recovery." The positive update was welcome news for the Bills, as they prepare for their final regular season contest on Sunday. An emotional Bills quarterback Josh Allen told reporters on Thursday about receiving word their teammate was awake and thinking of them.

"His dad said the first thing he is going to ask when he wakes up is ask who won the game," said Allen. "Sure enough that's what he did. "As teammates you love hearing that response," Allen continued. "The first thing on his mind wasn't poor me it was how are my teammates doing, did we win this game and that's powerful in itself. "We heard that news this morning and there was nothing that could have been told to us to bring our day down."

The next milestone, doctors said, was getting Hamlin breathing completely on his own. They said it was too soon to say whether the hit or a preexisting condition caused Hamlin to go into cardiac arrest. Asked whether there was a possibility of him playing professional football again, Knight told reporters: "It's entirely too early to have that conversation."

Knight said Hamlin was still critically ill and remained in the ICU, adding that the focus was on getting him off the ventilator "and on the road to recovery." The doctors credited the Bills' medical staff for quickly recognizing that Hamlin had no pulse and promptly administering Cardiopulmonary resuscitation. "This went as well as something like this can go under very challenging circumstances and they did a fantastic job, which is why we're here today," Pritts said.

BILLS GET BACK TO WORK

The game, which Cincinnati led 7-3, was postponed after the injury and the league late Thursday announced that it would not resume at all. The Bills were back on the practice field on Thursday preparing for their crucial regular season finale, when they host the New England Patriots. The Bills are battling the Bengals and Kansas City Chiefs for the top seed in the American Football Conference, which comes with a first-round playoff bye.

"Yesterday Damar's father spoke to the team and the message was the team needs to get back on focusing on the goals they had set for themselves," said Bills head coach Sean McDermott. "I'm paraphrasing him but Damar would have wanted it that way and that includes our game against New England this week." "The news today was a big help getting us back focused on the game this weekend," McDermott added.

Fans, athletes, celebrities and politicians, including U.S. President Joe Biden, have all offered Hamlin their prayers and support. Famed Niagara Falls - both the American Falls and Canadian Horseshoe Falls - were illuminated in Bills blue on Tuesday as a show of support for Hamlin, the team and the nearby city of Buffalo.

NFL Players Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said he hoped this incident "sends a message" to fans and the NFL community. "Our men are not gladiators," Smith said. "I hope ... that people are aware of the humanity of this game - and yes, it's dangerous, and yes, it's scary, yes, it's entertainment. "But my hope is that people understand and appreciate the sheer humanity of this game."

NFL star Damar Hamlin had to be resuscitated twice at the hospital after suffering from cardiac arrest on the field during the US National Football League game in Cincinnati on Monday night, his family members revealed.

The Buffalo Bills safety continues to remain in critical condition, but his health has been “trending upwards” in his recovery, and things are headed in a “positive direction”, his family said.

“His heart had went out, so they had to resuscitate him twice,” his uncle, Dorrian Glenn, told CNN on Tuesday.

“They resuscitated him on the field before they brought him to the hospital and then they resuscitated him a second time when they got him to the hospital.”

However, a family friend of Hamlin, Jordon Rooney, clarified on Wednesday that Glenn misspoke and the safety was only resuscitated once.

“Right now things are moving in a positive direction,” Rooney told NFL Network.

“What the doctors were looking to see, I think they saw that. There were some reports last night that he was resuscitated twice. I wanted to clarify, we misspoke, he was only resuscitated once.”

Hamlin collapsed on the field while tackling Cincinnati Bengals receiver Tee Higgins, whose helmet appeared to hit Hamlin in the chest. After the initially getting on his feet, Hamlin fell on his back.

His injury came as a shock to his family and loved ones.

"I've never cried so hard in my life," Glenn told CNN. "Just to know, like, my nephew basically died on the field and they brought him back to life. I mean, it's just heartbreaking."

Since 2006, NFL has made fortunes out of this trick. By delaying the release of the Week 18 schedule, the NFL always has the opportunity to ensure that whichever game receives the coveted prime-time slot has the most playoff implications.

The YouTube video platform has won the right to broadcast most NFL football games in the US next year, it announced Thursday, a major win by the Google subsidiary that underscores the growing role of streaming in sports. Google will pay around $2 billion a year over seven years, US media reported, for the right to broadcast Sunday games on its subscription YouTube TV service, available only in the United States.

YouTube TV subscribers, who now pay $64.99 a month for a viewing package, will have to pay an added fee -- as yet undetermined -- to view the games, or they can view them on an a-la-carte basis on its YouTube Primetime Channels platform. They will not be able to see games involving their local teams, which are covered by a separate contract. Moreover, YouTube TV will not have exclusive rights -- the Fox and CBS networks will continue to share some broadcasting rights within the United States.

National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell welcomed the development, saying it ushered in a "new era of how fans across the United States watch and follow the NFL."

For years the NFL has built a growing presence on YouTube, with videos offering game summaries and highlights. That has allowed the league to reach a younger audience -- one that favors short, punchy videos over broadcasts of full matches, which can last three hours or more.

"This partnership is yet another example of us looking towards the future and building the next generation of NFL fans," Goodell said.

The NFL's official YouTube channel currently has more than 10 million subscribers, who regularly watch short videos showing high points from one of the world's most powerful sports leagues. The NFL wants to further exploit its new arrangement by providing more official content to YouTube and connecting YouTube creators to its events.

The rights being purchased by YouTube TV were previously held by satellite operator DirecTV, which paid the NFL around $1.5 billion a year, according to several US media.

YouTube TV has more than five million subscribers, and hopes the new deal will help it greatly extend its reach.

The NFL will toughen its concussion protocols to prevent a repeat of the situation that led to Miami star Tua Tagovailoa's concussion, the league said Saturday.

In a joint statement with the NFL Players Association on a review into Tagovailoa's injury, the league and union said that steps of the protocol were followed as written.

"The NFL and NFLPA agree that the outcome in this case is not what was intended when the protocols were drafted," their statement said.

"As such, as has been done in previous cases, based on the advice of the parties' respective medical experts, the protocol will be modified to enhance the safety of the players."

The term "ataxia" -- defined as abnormality of balance/stability, motor coordination or dysfunctional speech caused by a neurological issue -- will be added to the mandatory symptoms that will result in a player being removed from a game.

If either a team physician or a neutral physician involved in concussion protocol finds a player is suffering from ataxia, the player will not return to the game and will be placed into concussion protocols.

Whether or not the change would be made before Sunday's NFL games was not explicitly stated. Indianapolis beat Denver on Thursday in the first game of the week.

The change will tighten a loophole that allowed Dolphins' quarterback Tagovailoa to play on after his head struck the turf on a September 25 game against Buffalo.

Tagovailoa struggled to leave the field and was checked for a concussion but declared to have only a back injury and returned for the second half.

He passed testing over the next four days and was controversially allowed to play against Cincinnati, where had his had slammed against the turf. He spent several minutes on the field before being carried off on a stretcher.

Tagovailoa was diagnosed with a concussion and neck injury after that. He will not play for Miami on Sunday against the New York Jets.

The joint investigation found that protocol was followed. Tagovailoa was examined after his injury in the Buffalo game and the Miami team physician cleared him after talking with an unaffiliated neurological consultant.

Tagovailoa told the medical staff he had aggravated a back injury on the play and that caused his stumble as he tried to leave the field, according to the report.

The medical staff found that the gross motor instability displayed by Tagovailoa was not caused by a neurological issue, which would have required him to be pulled from the game, but was instead from a back injury.

The team doctor and consultant, however, did not conduct their own exam of Tagovailoa's back during the concussion examination, instead relying on the prior exam by other medical staff, the joint statement said.

Tagovailoa showed no signs or symptoms of a concussion during his locker room exam, the remainder of the game or the four days before the Cincinnati kickoff, according to the statement.

NFL toughens concussion protocol in wake of Miami star Tua Tagovailoa's injury

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson was issued an 11-game ban and fined $5 million by the NFL on Thursday in a settlement between the league and the NFL players union.

The terms of the deal also require Watson to undergo a professional evaluation by behavioural experts and to follow their treatment program.

Watson has been accused of sexual assault and inappropriate conduct during massage sessions in civil lawsuits filed by 25 women during his time with the Houston, Texans.

Watson missed the entire 2021 NFL season for "non-injury personal reasons" and was traded to the Browns in March for six NFL Draft picks, three of their first-rounders.

The Browns signed Watson to a five-year deal worth $230 million, the largest contract with the most guaranteed money in NFL history.

Watson's fine plus money from the NFL and the Browns will be part of $7 million in donations to support the work of organizations that fight to prevent sexual misconduct and assault and support survivors of such actions.

"Deshaun has committed to doing the hard work on himself that is necessary for his return," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said.

"This settlement requires compliance with a professional evaluation and treatment plan, a significant fine, and a more substantial suspension."

Watson will miss the first 11 games of the NFL campaign that begins in September and be eligible to return to the Browns on November 28, just in time for his first possible game to be a December 4 contest at Houston against his former club.

Watson last week apologized to women who "I have impacted in this situation" but has denied wrongdoing in the incidents, which took place between March 2020 and March 2021.

On Thursday, Watson said he stands by his innocence and looks forward to telling his side of the full story.

"That's definitely the plan. That's definitely the goal," Watson said.

"I feel like through this whole process we've been trying to tell my side of the story but a whole lot of people didn't pay too much attention to it.

"One day we will. Only time will tell. I continue to keep being the person I am, keep showing the community how good a human being I am. I want to keep showing that and keep pushing forward."

Judge Sue Robinson found Watson violated the NFL's personal conduct policy earlier this month and issued a six-game ban, but the NFL appealed the outcome to a disciplinary officer, who did not, and now will not, make a ruling following the settlement between the NFL Players Association and the league.

Cooper Kupp scored two touchdowns and Aaron Donald spearheaded a fearsome defensive display as the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 23-20 to win the Super Bowl on Sunday.

Kupp scored a decisive touchdown with 1min 25sec remaining to give the Rams the lead at SoFi Stadium before Donald grabbed the Rams' record-equalling seventh sack of Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow to seal a blockbuster victory.

Donald's sack of Burrow was the dramatic final act of a gripping contest between the star-studded Rams and the Bengals, whose bid to win a first-ever Vince Lombardi Trophy fell agonizingly short.

"I'm just so happy," said Rams defensive star Donald. "I wanted this so bad. I dreamed this."

"One play and we're world champs," Donald added of his crucial late sack of Burrow. "Any way to get to him. We made it."

Wide receiver Kupp was named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player three years after missing the Rams' prior appearance in a Super Bowl through injury.

"It is unbelievable," Kupp said. "To be able to experience this with my family. It has been such a fun ride. Up and down but fun."

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, meanwhile, paid tribute to his team's never-say-die approach.

"I'm so proud of this team," Stafford said. "There are so many guys on our team that deserve this, so many guys who gave their heart and soul to this team.

"That game today is the story of our season. It's up and down it's tough. We're a tough team. We showed up late and got it done."

The Bengals had stormed into a 20-13 lead early in the second half after a controversial Tee Higgins touchdown and an Evan McPherson field goal.

Higgins raced for a 75-yard score but replays showed he grabbed Rams' safety Jalen Ramsey's facemask before breaking clear -- an infringement that should have led to a penalty.

'Stars came to life'

But the Rams, who had struggled to build momentum on offense after a game-ending injury to Odell Beckham Jr. in the first half, clawed their way back into the game thanks to their rampant defense led by Donald.

Burrow was sacked repeatedly at key moments to prevent the Bengals from extending their lead.

Matt Gay's field goal pulled the Rams back to 20-16 heading into the fourth quarter.

Stafford then led a 15-play, 79-yard drive that benefited from three crucial Bengals penalties near the goal line before Kupp plucked a one-yard pass in the end zone for the go-ahead touchdown.

"Stafford and Kupp came to life," said Rams head coach Sean McVay -- who becomes the youngest ever head coach to win the Super Bowl at the age of 36. "Our best players shined the brightest when they had to and that's why we got it done."

Kupp and Beckham had both scored early touchdowns to give the Rams a 13-3 lead in the second quarter before the Bengals battled back into the contest.

The defeat was brutal on Bengals quarterback Burrow, the 25-year-old rising star who has helped transform Cincinnati's fortunes this season.

Burrow finished with 263 passing yards and one touchdown but was buffeted all night and sacked seven times, equalling the record for the most sacks in a Super Bowl.

"It stings, but we had a great year," Burrow said. "I was disappointed in my performance. I thought I could have given us a chance to win. You live and learn."

Stafford, meanwhile, finished with 283 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions.

It was the Rams second franchise Super Bowl victory and their first since returning to Los Angeles from St. Louis in 2016. Their previous win came in 2000.

Sunday's showstopping finale was a fitting end to one of the most gripping NFL post-seasons in years.

With Los Angeles basking in a February heatwave, a 70,000-capacity crowd packed with Hollywood celebrities were given a show-stopping halftime show led by icons Snoop Dogg, Dr.Dre, Eminem and Mary J. Blige.

I dreamed this." Wide receiver Kupp was named the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player three years after missing the Rams' prior appearance in a Super Bowl through injury. "It is unbelievable," Kupp said. "To be able to experience this with my family. It has been such a fun ride. Up and down but fun." Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford, meanwhile, paid tribute to his team's never-say-die approach. "I'm so proud of this team," Stafford said. "There are so many guys on our team that deserve this, so many guys who gave their heart and soul to this team. "That game today is the story of our season. It's up and down it's tough. We're a tough team. We showed up late and got it done." The Bengals had stormed into a 20-13 lead early in the second half after a controversial Tee Higgins touchdown and an Evan McPherson field goal. Higgins raced for a 75-yard score but replays showed he grabbed Rams' safety Jalen Ramsey's facemask before breaking clear -- an infringement that should have led to a penalty. "Our best players shined the brightest when they had to and that's why we got it done." Kupp and Beckham had both scored early touchdowns to give the Rams a 13-3 lead in the second quarter before the Bengals battled back into the contest. Kupp, Donald star as Rams down Bengals in Super Bowl thriller

NFL star Tom Brady confirmed his retirement from the sport on Tuesday, officially bringing the curtain down on a glittering 22-season career.

The 44-year-old Tampa Bay Buccaneers superstar, widely regarded as the greatest quarterback in history, made the announcement in a post on Instagram.

Brady, winner of a record seven Super Bowls, said he was quitting after deciding he could no longer make the "competitive commitment" to continue.

"I have always believed the sport of football is an 'all-in' proposition -- if a 100% competitive commitment isn't there, you won't succeed, and success is what I love so much about our game," Brady wrote.

"This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore.

"I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention."

Brady's announcement draws a line under three days of feverish speculation that he was preparing to call time on his career.

News of his imminent retirement had been reported by ESPN citing multiple sources close to the player on Saturday.

However, Brady did not comment, with other reports saying he had not decided one way or another.

On Monday, the former New England Patriots star had been coy during an appearance on his own podcast, saying he was considering his future on a day-to-day basis.

Record-studded career

"I think when the time's right I'll be ready to make a decision one way or another, just like I said last week," he had said.

But those remarks turned out be just one final piece of misdirection from the veteran signal-caller, a five-time Super Bowl Most Valuable Player and three-time NFL season MVP a record tally of 243 regular-season victories.

Brady set NFL career passing records with 7,263 completions on 11,317 attempts for 84,520 yards and 624 touchdowns.

The bulk of his career was spent with the New England Patriots, where he won six Super Bowls in tandem with head coach Bill Belichick.

Brady did not mention the Patriots or Belichick in his initial farewell message on Tuesday, but later thanked the team in a message on Twitter.

Brady's career was studded with milestones and records that may never be beaten. He is the oldest player to play in and win a Super Bowl, a stage he graced on no fewer than 10 occasions.

His collection of Vince Lombardi Trophy victories also includes his memorable performance in the 2016-2017 championship game, when he led the Patriots back from a 25-point deficit to complete the greatest Super Bowl comeback in history.

Brady added an improbable seventh Super Bowl to his collection in 2021 after opting to join Tampa Bay in 2020. He led the Buccaneers back into the playoffs this season, but they exited in the divisional round with a 30-27 home loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

'A thrilling ride'

"My playing career has been such a thrilling ride, and far beyond my imagination, and full of ups and downs," Brady said Tuesday.

"When you're in it every day, you really don't think about any kind of ending. As I sit here now, however, I think of all the great players and coaches I was privileged to play with and against -- the competition was fierce and deep, JUST HOW WE LIKE IT.

"I will remember and cherish these memories and re-visit them often. I feel like the luckiest person in the world."

Messages of congratulations beneath the Instagram post read like a who's who of the sporting world on Tuesday, with many saluting Brady as the "G.O.A.T (greatest of all time)" or using a goat emoji.

"Get your butt up and do one more year," joked NBA icon Shaquille O'Neal, before adding: "Love u bro. Absolute joy to watch."

Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps added: "Congrats bro! Enjoy the next chapter."

Tennis star Naomi Osaka, former world footballer of the year Kaka and England soccer captain Harry Kane were among other athletes congratulating Brady.

Former Denver Broncos quarterback and Hall-of-Famer John Elway described Brady as a "true winner who handled himself with class throughout his entire career."

"Even with those seven Super Bowl rings, he never lost that competitive fire to be the best," Elway said.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, meanwhile, paid tribute to Brady as "one of the greatest to ever play in the NFL."

"An incredible competitor and leader, his stellar career is remarkable for its longevity but also for the sustained excellence he displayed year after year," Goodell said.

Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians meanwhile said Brady joined the team in 2020 as "the greatest football player of all time."

"He set a standard and helped create a culture that took our team to the mountaintop," Arians said.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft said Brady's career had been a "dream come true" for fans of the franchise.

"You didn't have to be a Patriots fan to respect and appreciate his competitiveness, determination and will to win that fueled his success," Kraft said in a statement. "As a fan of football, it was a privilege to watch."

From Dwayne Johnson to Michael Phelps: Reactions pour in as NFL legend Tom Brady confirms retirement

Tom Brady says he will "know when the time is right" but for now he taking his future "day-by-day" and hasn't made up his mind about retiring from the National Football League.

Brady said plans for a quiet weekend at home with the family watching the NFL playoffs was shattered when reports came out Saturday that he would retire after 22 seasons and seven Super Bowl rings.

"I was trying to enjoy a nice weekend," Brady told a US-based SiriusXM podcast 'Let's Go!' "It didn't quite turn out that way because my phone got really busy, but that's just part of being in the situation I'm in."

American sports broadcaster ESPN cited unidentified sources saying that Brady would retire. The report did not say when Brady planned to make an announcement.

Brady reiterated on Monday that he is still mulling over his future.

"Sometimes it takes some time to really evaluate how you feel and what you want to do," he said. "I think when the time's right I'll be ready to make a decision one way or another, just like I said last week.

"I think for me, it's literally day to day. I'm just trying to do the best I can every day, evaluate things as they come, and I'm trying to make a great decision for me and my family."

Asked about the timing of a decision, Brady said: "I don't know. I'll know when the time is right. Like I've always said, I'm very blessed to play as long as I have. As things have gone on in the later parts of my career ... there's a lot of interest in when I'm going to stop playing. I understand that. When I know, I'll know. When I don't know, I don't know. I'm not going to race to some conclusion about that."

Brady said he wasn't pleased that his retirement speculation ended up being a distraction from the playoff games on the weekend.

"There were some very important games on the weekend," Brady said. "The focus should be on those great games."

'I'll know when the time is right': Tom Brady says he is still mulling over his NFL future

Questions about Tom Brady’s future intensified Saturday after reports surfaced that he planned to retire after 22 seasons in the NFL. His agent declined to put a timetable on such a decision or to confirm the veracity of the reports.

“Without getting into the accuracy or inaccuracy of what’s being reported, Tom will be the only person to express his plans with complete accuracy,” Don Yee, Brady’s agent, said Saturday in a statement. “He knows the realities of the football business and planning calendar as well as anybody, so that should be soon.”

Brady, who once said that he would retire only when his performance started to decline, this season led the league in passing yards (5,316), completions (485) and touchdowns (43) for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady, 44, and the Buccaneers lost last week in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Los Angeles Rams, after he nearly led his team to yet another incredible comeback.

Brady is under contract with the Buccaneers through the 2022 season, but the team would get back $16 million of his signing bonus should he retire.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington first reported that Brady would be retiring around 2:30 p.m. Eastern time on Saturday, citing “multiple sources.” Brady’s lifestyle brand, TB12, appeared to confirm the news on its Twitter account minutes later, but it subsequently deleted its post.

At the time of the news breaking, a representative from the Buccaneers said he was unable to confirm Brady’s retirement. Bruce Arians, the team’s head coach, told the Tampa Bay Times that Brady had not informed the organization of his plans to retire.

Adding to the confusion, Brady’s retirement was splashed on the front of NFL.com, which cited its insider reporter Ian Rapoport. The retirement was also heavily covered by the NFL’s official social media accounts.

A league spokesman, Brian McCarthy, meanwhile, said the NFL had not been officially informed that Brady is retiring. The NFL is not only a football league but also a media company competing to report news like any other, two ends that sometimes awkwardly intersect.

Yee’s statement attempted to pause the commotion and, potentially, allow Brady to announce his future plans on his own terms, but the news cycle was already churning. At 4 p.m. Eastern time, Mike Silver reported for Bally Sports that Brady had contacted Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht to tell him he had not made a final decision on retirement. Bay Area news station KRON followed with a report citing Brady’s father, Tom Brady Sr., as saying that his son is not retiring.

ESPN said in a statement that it stood by the reporting of Schefter and Darlington, and Schefter reiterated that position on-air during an appearance on the network during halftime of a telecast of a college basketball game.

Brady’s public comments in the days since Tampa Bay’s season ended had seemed to point to his retirement. On his “Let’s Go!” podcast with Jim Gray last week, he talked about wanting to be more available for his wife, Gisele Bundchen, and three children and said he would make a decision with them about what’s next.

If this is it, so many details of Brady’s career sound apocryphal. His seven championships are more than any franchise has won. He would retire as the NFL’s career leader in touchdown passes, yardage and victories. He was named Super Bowl MVP five times. Only one other quarterback, John Elway, even started in five Super Bowls.

Brady rose to stardom with the New England Patriots, ascending from a sixth-round draft pick in 2000, No. 199 overall, to the most prominent on-field member of an enduring dynasty. But with the Patriots unwilling to sign him to a long-term contract, Brady in March 2020 bolted for the Buccaneers, leaving the only team and head coach he ever played for, Bill Belichick, for one of the NFL’s least successful franchises.

With the Buccaneers, Brady mastered a new offense, adjusted to new teammates and coaches and dominated the league, all while the coronavirus pandemic restricted in-person contact. He won his seventh title, over Kansas City, in February in the Buccaneers’ home stadium.

Speculation about Tom Brady's retirement intensifies

The NFL warned clubs and players on Thursday that COVID-19 outbreaks among unvaccinated players in 2021 could cause forfeits without pay to either club and teams liable for financial losses.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell informed teams of the policy for the upcoming season in a memo, which encourages players to get vaccinated but falls short of a mandate under terms of its deal with the players union.

NFL teams began pre-season training camps this week with the 2021 campaign set to start in September.

Under terms established in the memo, if a team has a COVID-19 outbreak and a game cannot be played or rescheduled during the 18-week season, the team with the outbreak will forfeit the contest.

The team responsible for an unplayed game due to unvaccinated players or staff will be responsible for covering financial losses for the canceled game and possible discipline for the commisioner.

That move essentially pressures teams to get their personnel vaccinated as the potential expenses for an unplayed game, from ticket refunds to lost league telecast revenue, could be steep.

There will also be peer pressure from teammates as well as players on other teams, who risk losing their paychecks from a game because a rival club has an outbreak and forfeits.

The memo states the NFL plans to play its entire 272 games, 17 contests per club, over 18 weeks, with no extra week to allow for rescheduling.

"We do not anticipate adding a '19th week' to accommodate games that cannot be rescheduled within the current 18 weeks of the regular season," the memo said.

The moves should avoid the major rescheduling issues COVID-19 produced last season, games being played on every day of the week and teams juggling plans to complete the season.

Vaccinated individuals who test positive but are asymptomatic can return to activities after two negative tests 24 hours apart while unvaccinated people will have a mandatory 10-day isolation.

"If a game is cancelled/postponed because a club cannot play due to a Covid spike among or resulting from its non-vaccinated players/staff, then the burden of the cancellation or delay will fall on the club experiencing the Covid infection," the memo said.

"We will seek to minimize the burden on the opposing club or clubs. If a club cannot play due to a Covid spike in vaccinated individuals, we will attempt to minimize the competitive and economic burden on both participating teams."

The NFL cites the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in creating the new regulations for the upcoming season.

According to the NFL Network, more than 78% of NFL players have had at least one shot of a vaccine and 14 teams have at least 85% of players vaccinated.

"We can play a full season if we maintain a firm commitment to adhering to our health and safety protocols and to making needed adjustments in response to changing conditions," the memo said.

"These operating principles are designed to allow us to play a full season in a safe and responsible way and address possible competitive or financial issues fairly."

"We will seek to minimize the burden on the opposing club or clubs. If a club cannot play due to a Covid spike in vaccinated individuals, we will attempt to minimize the competitive and economic burden on both participating teams." The NFL cites the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in creating the new regulations for the upcoming season.

Kansas City Chiefs' Robinson and Daniel Kilgore placed in COVID-19 list: Report

The National Football League has stepped up its pandemic protocols with tougher restrictions going into effect on Saturday to try and mitigate the spread of coronavirus on the same day the Las Vegas Raiders found themselves in the midst of another outbreak.

The stricter measures, which will last until the end of the season, include forcing players to wear masks during practice sessions, a strict 15-minute time limit per person in the dressing room, and making sure all players and coaches have a negative test from the previous day before being allowed into the club's facilities.

"It has been said many times that our 2020 season cannot be 'normal' because nothing about this year is normal," NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a memo to all the teams on Wednesday.

"Flexibility and adaptability have been critical to our success to date and we must continue with that approach."

The league also said in the memo that 28 of the 32 teams had already been slapped with temporary stricter measures for Covid-19 reasons. Of those 28, a total of 16 had been on them more than once.

"The upcoming holidays, beginning with Thanksgiving next week, will introduce new risks of exposure that we need to address now," Goodell said in the memo.

"Because we have a highly sophisticated program of daily testing, we know when the virus enters our facilities, which underscores the importance of contact tracing and other steps to minimize close contacts within a facility."

Other protocols include: all meetings held virtually unless outdoors or with pre-approval for indoors; locker room usage discouraged on non-game days; meals served on a grab-and-go basis; limits of 10 players in the weight room at one time.

According to the latest test results announced by the league earlier this week, 95 players and 175 team personnel had tested positive through November 14 since monitoring began in August.

Teams across the league have continued to report cases of Covid-19 despite safety protocols put in place this season.

On Wednesday, the Raiders placed seven more players on the Covid-19 reserve list, four days before the team is due to host the Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs. Eleven Raiders players are now on the Covid list, although the game is expected to go ahead.

In a separate development, the Los Angeles Rams also confirmed a Covid-19 case -- the first positive case found by the team this season. The Rams said Wednesday the team had placed tight end Kendall Blanton, defensive back Jake Gervase and wide receiver J.J. Koski on the Covid-19 reserve list.
