Delhi rain update: Heavy rainfall lashes national capital & NCR; IMD predicts showers till weekend

Sixteen children, aged between 10 and 18, have been rescued in the Philippines after Australian police discovered sexually explicit material on the phone of a man arrested in Sydney. A joint global cooperation between the&nbsp;Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) led to the amazing rescue.&nbsp;

As per CNN, the PNP executed warrants at multiple locations in the Metro Manila area and a province in Northern Philippines, leading to the recovery of the abused children. The joint effort was aimed at combating child exploitation and abuse.

<h2>How the rescue unfolded</h2>

The investigation, as per CNN, began in January when the Australian Border Force intercepted a 56-year-old man from Queensland upon his return to Sydney from the Philippines.&nbsp;

An examination of the man's phone revealed child abuse material and messages outlining his intentions to engage in the sexual abuse of children in the Philippines.&nbsp;

The man was subsequently charged with grooming and possession of child abuse material, offences that carry a potential maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. However, he failed to appear for a scheduled court appearance on May 30, resulting in an arrest warrant being issued.

"However, these children’s lives have been irrecoverably damaged and we know there are too many other children still at risk," added the officer.

Efforts are ongoing to locate additional suspected victims, and the children rescued have been placed under the care of the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development.

Claudia Ackley, the&nbsp;prominent Bigfoot hunter who claimed to have encountered the cryptid, passed away at the age of 51. She was found dead at her Tennessee residence on July 3. Her partner, Ed Brown, informed The US Sun that her cause of death is suspected to be a heart attack.

Ed said he "lost a soldier," adding that he was out of town for work and grew concerned when he didn't hear from Claudia for an extended period of time, the Hindustan Times reported.&nbsp;

He said, "She wasn't moving so the police were called and discovered she had passed away. That was Thursday, July 2. Her last messages were on Thursday so I assume at some point that evening she passed away."

He added, "More tests need to be done, but according to police, she died of cardiac arrest."

He also mentioned that her death might have been caused by hypertension or an issue with her medication, although nothing has been proven yet.&nbsp;

Claudia's Bigfoot Sighting in the forest:

The mother-of-two claimed to have seen the cryptid on 27 March 2016 in the mountains of Big Bear, California. Following her sighting, Claudia returned to the location and found a giant 22-footprint and another 13-inch footprint near the site, both with all five toes.

After the sighting, she reached out to locals who shared similar stories and the hiker reported hearing screams resembling "women getting raped."

Claudia also found thousands of similar sightings across the US and established a PTSD group for survivors of bigfoot sightings.

Recounting the incident, Claudia in an interview with The Sun in 2018, explained that one evening, around 6:30 pm, she and her daughters were on a hike, capturing videos and photos on her phone. Suddenly her daughters froze with an expression of fear, confirming they saw something.

Upon noticing their reactions, she quickly ran about 20 feet ahead of them and witnessed an enormous creature weighing around 800 pounds, with a large head, huge ears and black almond-shaped eyes.

"He was like a Neanderthal man with lots of messy hair. He was kind of perched about 30 feet up between two branches of a tree and I'm looking at it, trying to register: ‘What is it this? What am I looking at?"

Following her encounter, Claudia filed a lawsuit against the California Department of Fish and Wildlife in an effort to prove the existence of the animal.&nbsp;

Ed stated that her goal was to prompt real investigation and research. He said Claudia not only believed in what she saw, but she also had verifiable photographic evidence and had multiple witnesses who saw the same thing.&nbsp;

"No matter what you believe, she collected everything she could to go forward with this and come hell or high water she was out to prove they existed."&nbsp;

Till now, nothing has been proven.&nbsp;

Who was Claudia Ackley? Famous Bigfoot hunter passes away at 51

In the aftermath of a devastating train crash that claimed the lives of at least 293 people in India, more than 50 bodies remain unclaimed, leaving families in a state of limbo and grief. The tragic accident occurred on June 2&nbsp;in the Indian state of Odisha, when a passenger train collided with a stationary goods train, derailing onto an adjacent track.

Subsequently, some of the overturned coaches were struck by another passing train. With over 1,000 people injured, it is considered the deadliest rail accident in India this century.

<h2>A month later, families still await news</h2>

Stored in a deep freeze container, the 52 bodies are in varying conditions, making identification a challenging process for grieving families.

One month after the deadly accident, while the accident site has been restored, many families are still unable to find closure as they continue their search for the bodies of their loved ones.&nbsp;

In Bhubaneswar city, near the AIIMS government hospital where the bodies are being kept, Shiv Charan, a resident of West Bengal, has been living in a guest house for the past month, reports BBC.

Charan visits the hospital regularly in the hope of finding his brother Krishra's body, with whom he spoke moments before the crash.

However, the agonising wait seems endless, as he has only managed to identify some of his brother's clothes and is awaiting the results of a DNA test before he can claim them.&nbsp;

Like many others, Charan has sent his DNA samples for testing, a crucial process implemented by the authorities to ensure accurate identification when multiple claimants are involved. However, the timeline for receiving the test results remains uncertain.

Speaking to BBC, he said: "No one has told me when the report will come."&nbsp;

Charan says he wouldn't leave without his brother's body. "I want his last rites to be performed properly," he said. Similar to him, other families too have been camping nearby awaiting information on their lost loved ones.

<h2>Identification process continues</h2>

As per BBC, last week, 29 bodies were identified through DNA reports, and officials have begun handing them over to their respective families. However, there are still 52 bodies that remain unidentified.&nbsp;

Biswajit Sahu, the chief public relations officer of East Coast Railways, assured the publication that the identification process is being conducted cautiously to prevent any errors.&nbsp;

He said that the identification of next of kin "is being done with the help of railway officials, Odisha police, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation officials and AIIMS staff."

Nevertheless, as per authorities, as time goes on, the task of identifying the bodies becomes increasingly challenging. Questions have arisen regarding the duration for which unclaimed bodies can be kept and what should be done if there are no claimants.&nbsp;

Some have suggested mass cremation as a possible solution. However, as per Sahu, no decision can be made until the DNA testing process is completed.

Charan says he wouldn't leave without his brother's body. "I want his last rites to be performed properly," he said. Similar to him, other families too have been camping nearby awaiting information on their lost loved ones. Identification process continues As per BBC, last week, 29 bodies were identified through DNA reports, and officials have begun handing them over to their respective families. However, there are still 52 bodies that remain unidentified. Biswajit Sahu, the chief public relations officer of East Coast Railways, assured the publication that the identification process is being conducted cautiously to prevent any errors. He said that the identification of next of kin "is being done with the help of railway officials, Odisha police, Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation officials and AIIMS staff." Nevertheless, as per authorities, as time goes on, the task of identifying the bodies becomes increasingly challenging. Questions have arisen regarding the duration for which unclaimed bodies can be kept and what should be done if there are no claimants. Some have suggested mass cremation as a possible solution. However, as per Sahu, no decision can be made until the DNA testing process is completed. A US court has ruled that two precious metals companies must pay nearly $146 million in restitution and penalties after more than 500,000 American Silver Eagle coins that vanished under their care. The firms, Argent Asset Group and First State Depository Company, owned by Robert Higgins, have been accused of orchestrating a "fraudulent and deceptive scheme" by promising to store the coins for customers but failed to do so.

<h2>The lost "treasure"</h2>

As per BBC, an investigation revealed that the coins, which were supposed to be held in vaults, could not be located. As part of the settlement, Argent Asset Group and First State Depository Company have been ordered to make compensation of $112.7 million and pay a penalty of $33mn.

The US Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), alleged that Higgins' companies operated "fraudulent silver leasing programmes" known as the Maximus Program and the Silver Lease Program between 2014 and 2022.&nbsp;

The CFTC stated that the firms "solicited and misappropriated at least $7 million in funds and silver from at least 200 customers" and also made "false and misleading excuses for why assets could not be withdrawn".

<h2>What are American Silver Eagle Coins?</h2>

American Silver Eagle coins are backed by the US government, with each coin guaranteed to contain at least one troy ounce (31.1g) of 99.9 per cent pure silver, according to the United States Mint.

Investigators discovered more than 500,000 American Silver Eagle coins and over 9,000 gold coins missing from customers' accounts. Instead of the coins, they found empty boxes with "IOU" slips that are used to represent customers' holdings, however, they&nbsp;contained no assets.

The CFTC emphasised the severity of the misconduct and stated that appropriate enforcement actions were necessary.&nbsp;

"This kind of egregious behaviour merits the full weight of the Commission's enforcement authority."

In addition to the monetary penalties, the court ruling regarding the missing American Silver Eagle coins has also mandated the closure of the implicated firms, Argent Asset Group LLC and First State Depository Company LLC, reports Market Watch. Moreover, the owner, Robert Higgins, has been permanently barred from participating in the commodities industry.

In a terrible accident, two people died and three others were injured after a giant rock tumbled down a hill and smashed three cars on&nbsp;the Kohima-Dimapur National Highway in the northeast Indian state of Nagaland. The incident took place during a landslide amid heavy rains.&nbsp;

A video posted by news agency ANI shows the moment the rock rolled down and hit the cars in a 'blink-and-you-miss-it' manner. The&nbsp;dashboard cam footage showed the cars in a stationary position, stuck in a jam around 5 pm on Tuesday (July 4) when the boulder came out from nowhere and within seconds, flattened the cars.

The frighteningly quick nature of the accident&nbsp;offered&nbsp;no chance for the victims to react. The cars were turned into a heap of metal as if&nbsp;someone had folded a paper. Police informed that one person died on the spot while another succumbed to injuries undergoing treatment at the&nbsp;Referral Hospital. Three others were injured and receiving treatment.&nbsp;

Taj Mahal, the famous monument of love in India's Agra, recently became the location of a heart-wrenching incident. Tourists visiting the legendary monument left their dog locked in a car in scorching heat, which unfortunately lead to the poor pet's death.&nbsp;

Witnesses captured the poor animal's plight and shared videos of it online. Authorities soon responded and a UP Police unit promptly reached the spot but was unable to save the dog's life.

The Titan submersible tragedy

On 18 June 2023, OceanGate's Titan Submersible began its expedition to the shipwreck of The Titanic.&nbsp;

The vessel was carrying five passengers: Shahzada and Suleman Dawood, a father-son duo driven by their fascination with the Titanic; Paul-Henri Nargeolet, a renowned French scientist and Titanic expert, on his 38th dive to the Titanic wreckage; Hamish Harding, a British airline executive and Stockton Rush, the founder and CEO of OceanGate, who was piloting the submersible.

Just hours after the descent began, contact with the submersible was lost. As per the United States Coast Guard, the disconnection happened after one hour and forty-five minutes into the dive. Four days later, the Coast Guard announced the discovery of debris from the Titan and said that all the passengers have perished in an implosion that would've instantaneously killed all onboard.

Ukraine's army has made modest progress in the south and Russian forces have advanced in Donbas region, the industrial heartland of the war-ravaged nation. The war's frontline is frozen, and a month after the launch of Kyiv's much-heralded counter-offensive, neither side seems able to force a decisive breakthrough. Ukrainian forces over the past week recaptured nine square kilometres in the east. The country's deputy defence minister says Ukrainian forces also captured 28 square kilometres in the south. It is a far cry from Kyiv's lightning successes seizing 9,000 square kilometres in just nine days east of Kharkiv at the start of last September. It was followed by 5,000 square kilometres more in November, in the Kherson region.

Thousands of small dead fish washed ashore on the banks of the Amshan River in Majar-al Kabir in Maysan province in southeast Iraq amid blistering weather conditions.&nbsp;

Linking the wildlife disaster to possible drought conditions in the area, officials on Monday announced that they'd be investigating the matter of the river, which is home to almost nine aquatic species.&nbsp;

Iraq's agricultural ministry said that it is forming a committee to look into the cause of deaths, AFP reported, citing news agency INA.

Thousands of dead fish wash ashore in drought-hit Iraq, probe on

Congress Member of Parliament Hibi Eden is being heavily criticised by his own party and opposition leaders for proposing a private bill to shift south Indian state Kerala's capital from Thiruvananthapuram to Ernakulam. The leaders have been urging the 40-year-old MP to withdraw the bill, moved in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament.

Eden, who is from Ernakulam constituency, proposed the private member’s Bill in March, urging to change the state's capital. He argued that since the capital is located at the tip of the state, it is inaccessible to residents of the northern districts, Hindustan Times reported.&nbsp;

Only parliament will decide on Bill

The young MP justified his move by claiming that he submitted the Bill considering people’s opinions. He said that he did not intend to hurt the feelings of people from any particular region. Giving an explanation for not consulting the party leadership before submitting the bill, he said that the "clearance" from the party was not mandatory for presenting a private Bill earlier and assured to abide by the party rules in future.&nbsp;

Recently on Facebook, Eden said that only parliament will decide on the bill to accept or decline the demand.&nbsp;

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan dismissed the bill, saying that there was no need to relocate the capital.&nbsp;

The controversy regarding the Bill came to light when the Union government asked the state government for its views on the matter.&nbsp;To this, the state responded that in 1954, Thiruvananthapuram was chosen as the state capital and during the existing circumstance it continues to still support the move.&nbsp;

Leaders oppose Eden's Bill, say no need for controversy

Congress Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor opposed Eden's move, calling it illogical. He said, "He has every right to move a private member’s Bill, but this proposal is not grounded in logic. Not every state’s capital needs to be centrally located. Chennai is at the northern end of Tamil Nadu, and even Delhi, the capital of India, is in the north."

Similarly, the leader of the opposition in Kerala, VD Satheesan from Congress who also represents the Ernakulam district, said he called Hibi immediately after he heard about the bill and conveyed his displeasure.

He said, "Hibi is like my younger brother." He added that this is not the stand of the Congress party and has told Hibi to withdraw the Bill and there is no need for any further controversy.&nbsp;

P Rajeeve, senior Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader told reporters, "Even his party leaders have conceded that it is an immature and impractical idea. It only leads to a useless discussion. Hibi took a stand to meet his election goals."

Congress Party disowns MP Hibi Eden's private bill to shift Kerala's capital, calls it illogical

He Jiankui, the Chinese scientist who faced international condemnation in 2018 for creating the first gene-edited children, has presented a new research proposal involving modifying human embryos to address the challenges of the ageing population. He, who was sentenced to three years in prison in 2019 for "illegal medical practices," resurfaced last year and announced the opening of a research lab in Beijing. Recently, he posted a research proposal on social media outlining plans to gene-edit mouse embryos and human-fertilised egg cells to investigate if a mutation can protect against Alzheimer's disease.

<h2>Juankui's new proposal&nbsp;</h2>

Notably, the proposed experiment would involve abnormal fertilised egg cells not suitable for implantation.&nbsp;

In a one-page document, the scientist&nbsp;proposed&nbsp;research involving gene-editing of mouse embryos and human fertilised egg cells or zygotes. He plans to test whether a mutation "confers protection against Alzheimer’s disease."&nbsp;

This reportedly will help with the nation's ageing population.

"The ageing population is of grave importance as both a socioeconomic issue and a strain on the medical system … Currently, there is no effective drug for Alzheimer’s disease," wrote the scientist in his proposal.

However, unlike previous experiments that landed him in jail, He stated that "government permits and ethical approval" would be required before any experimentation, emphasising that no human embryo would be implanted for pregnancy.

<h2>Government approvals</h2>

While it remains uncertain if He would obtain approval for such research in China, experts argue that the current proposal lacks scientific validity.&nbsp;

After He's previous research was exposed, Chinese authorities tightened regulations and ethical standards governing human gene editing. They banned He from engaging in assisted reproductive technology services and placed limitations on his work with human genetic resources.

Scientists and medical ethics experts have expressed concern and confusion about He's new proposal involving gene editing of embryos. Some consider the proposal to be more of a publicity stunt than a substantiated research agenda. Critics question the ethical implications of genetically modifying embryos to address a complex disease like Alzheimer's, which lacks a clear, single genetic cause. Experts argue that the proposal raises ethical, scientific, and safety concerns.

<h2>Experts criticise "violations" of ethics</h2>

The proposal attracted criticism from experts who drew parallels to He's earlier work, which was widely criticised for its ethical and safety concerns, as it had the potential to alter human DNA across generations.&nbsp;

In March of this year, over 200 Chinese scholars released a statement condemning He's "attitude and refusal to reflect on his criminal actions of violating ethics and regulations of gene editing."

As per CNN, they also called for regulatory authorities to launch a new investigation into the scientist's "alleged re‐violation of scientific integrity, ethical norms, laws and regulations."

"The ethical boundaries shall not be crossed," they remarked.
