Marble head, part of a female divinity: Experts

According to experts, the marble piece is believed to be part of a statue of a female divinity, perhaps Aphrodite due to its natural dimensions. The head is carved in Greek marble and displays elegant workmanship. The hair on the marble head is seemingly gathered at the back thanks to a "taenia", a ribbon knotted on the top of the head.

According to the Sovrintendenza Capitolina (Capitoline Superintendence), responsible for managing, maintaining and enhancing the capital's historic and archaeological heritage, the marble head was discovered during the redevelopment work of the "Mausoleum of Augustus and Piazza Augusto Imperatore" on the eastern side.

The Mausoleum of Augustus is a tomb built by Roman Emperor Augustus in 28 BC following his victory at the Battle of Actium. The structure is circular in plan and measures 90 metres in diameter by 42 metres in height, originally capped by a conical roof with a huge bronze statue of Augustus.

Scotland on Friday unveiled its plans to decriminalise the possession of all drugs for personal use, aiming to address the alarming drug death rate, which currently stands as the highest in Europe. Reuters reports that the devolved government in Edinburgh emphasised that these measures should be implemented by the British government in London, which has the authority to regulate drug-related matters within the UK's political structure.

What the Scotland government is proposing

The proposed policy change aims to shift the approach from criminalisation to treatment and support for individuals struggling with drug addiction.

By decriminalising drug possession, Scotland hopes to provide these individuals with the necessary assistance and increase their chances of finding employment during the recovery process.

Elena Whitham, Scotland's Minister for Drugs Policy, acknowledged that the proposals would spark debate but highlighted their alignment with the government's public health approach.

"While we know these proposals will spark debate, they are in line with our public health approach and would further our national mission to improve and save lives," said Whitham, in a statement.

"We are working hard within the powers we have to reduce drug deaths, and while there is more we need to do, our approach is simply at odds with the Westminster legislation we must operate within," she added.

Scotland's drug death rate remains a grave concern, with 327 deaths per million population in 2020. This figure significantly surpasses the next highest rate in Norway, which stood at 85, according to official statistics.

UK central government's stand

As per Reuters, a spokesperson for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak dismissed the possibility of any policy change, affirming the government's commitment to maintaining its tough stance on drugs.

"There are no plans to alter our tough stance on drugs," said the spokesperson.

The governing Scottish National Party, which advocates for Scottish independence, has been involved in clashes with the British government on other contentious issues, including a proposed gender recognition reform law.

Drug possession around the world

While drug possession is illegal in many parts of the world, several countries have already decriminalised various forms of drug possession — this includes Portugal, Netherlands, Switzerland and Czechia.

Health experts argue that such measures would enable individuals struggling with addiction to be treated as patients rather than criminals, emphasising the importance of a public health-oriented approach.

Scotland proposes decriminalisation of drugs to tackle Europe's worst narcotics related death rate

Two major banks in Bangladesh, including the largest state-owned lender, are planning to introduce trade transactions denominated in Indian rupees, announced officials on Friday. This move comes as Bangladesh aims to strengthen its declining foreign exchange reserves.

Traditionally, trade transactions in Bangladesh have been conducted exclusively in US dollars. However, Reuters reports that state-owned Sonali Bank and Eastern Bank have recently opened "nostro" accounts in rupees with India's State Bank of India and ICICI Bank, respectively.

Nostro bank accounts

The establishment of these nostro accounts will allow the banks to hold funds in rupees abroad and facilitate international trade and foreign exchange transactions, reports Reuters.

According to Afzal Karim, the managing director of Sonali Bank, "This is just the beginning. More banks will join us in the coming days."

The introduction of Indian rupee trade transactions is anticipated to alleviate pressure on Bangladesh's foreign reserves, he added.

"It will ease pressure on the foreign reserves."

The exchange rate mechanism for these transactions will be determined on a cross-currency basis by individual banks, with a formal announcement scheduled for July 11, according to Ali Reza Iftekhar, the managing director of Eastern Bank.

Why did Bangladesh introduce transactions in Indian Rupee

Talking to Reuters, Iftekhar said that by incorporating the Indian Rupee in trade with India, Bangladesh aims to establish a convenient and cost-effective mechanism for cross-border transactions.

"The use of the Indian Rupee in India-Bangladesh trade provides a convenient and cost-effective mechanism for conducting cross-border transactions, contributing to the strengthening of economic ties between the two nations," he said.

Bilateral relationship and Bangladesh's financial troubles

India stands as Bangladesh's second-largest import source after China. In the year leading up to June 2022, Bangladesh's exports to India amounted to $2 billion, while imports from India reached $13.69 billion.

Bangladesh has been facing challenges in paying for imported fuel due to a shortage of US dollars. Its dollar reserves have also seen a decline of over a third since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, reaching a seven-year low of $31.60 billion.

The devaluation of Bangladesh's currency, the 'Taka', by more than a sixth in the past 12 months through May further adds to the country's economic struggles.

Climate change affects some countries more than others. One such country is Iraq, a largely barren nation. The united nations says Iraq is one of the five countries most impacted by effects of climate change, and this is reflected by the thousands of dead fish that washed ashore on the banks of a drying marsh in southern Iraq.

Recently released bodycam footage has shed light on the aftermath of a major jewellery heist in Lebec, California. The jewellery heist as per a BBC report could be valued at $100 million, that could mean that the theft could be the most expensive jewellery heist in US history.

What happened a year ago

Almost a year ago, in 2022, two security guards made a stop at a Flying J convenience store while transporting jewellery worth millions from a show in San Mateo to Pasadena.

As per LA Times, in the early hours of July 11, 2022, sheriff's deputies responding to a vehicle burglary arrived at the Flying J Travel Center in Lebec, California.

There they discovered was a bold late-night heist that had just taken place—a Brink's tractor-trailer carrying millions of dollars worth of jewellery, watches, gems, and other items from a trade show had been breached.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, Jeremy Viger and David Swigart, engaged in a conversation with the Brink's drivers, capturing the interaction on their body cameras. The footage, recently obtained by The Times, provides new insights into the aftermath of the crime, which affected 14 jewellers whose merchandise was on display at the International Gem and Jewellery Show.

What does the newly unveiled footage show?

The deputies, as per the LA Times report, arrived at around 4 am, finding the truck stop filled with parked big rigs. They approached the drivers cautiously, aware that the thieves might still be in the vicinity.

"We are gonna post up here because you never know — they could still be lurking," says one deputy Viger.

The body camera footage, recorded from different angles, reveals a conversation that lasted approximately 45 minutes.

During the recorded conversation, Tandy Motley, one of the truck crew, mentions that he had been watched by a man at the jewellery show.

"He was staring me right in the eye," said the driver, as per the report.

"I’m pretty sure we were followed from the show where we got loaded," adds Motley.

Another revelation is the estimate cost of the heist.

The drivers discussed the value of the stolen merchandise, initially estimating it at $2.7 million. However, Brink's later stated in a legal filing that the stolen shipments were worth more than three times that amount. The conflicting valuations have led to lawsuits between Brink's and the jewellers involved.

The lawsuit

The heist has sparked a lawsuit filed by 14 jewellers against Brinks, the company responsible for the transportation of the precious jewels.

The value of the stolen jewellery is the subject of duelling lawsuits. One lawsuit was filed by Brink's against the jewellers whose merchandise was pilfered, and a counter-lawsuit filed by the jewellers against Brink's and other parties.

While Brink's has sought to limit the payout to the jewellers at $8.7 million, Attorney Jerry Kroll, representing the jewellers, puts the estimated value of the stolen jewellery at around $100 million.

However, Brink's says that the $8.7 million payout appropriately reflects the value declared by the merchants on shipping manifests.

Brinks as per a CBS news report stated that the jewellers had undervalued their goods, which impacted the security measures implemented during transportation. The company claims that if the jewellers had accurately declared the value of their goods, appropriate security measures would have been taken, and they would have compensated the customers accordingly.

Captured on camera: Body cam footage from biggest jewellery heist in US history reveals unknown facts

80-year-old Joe Biden has been dogged by salacious reporting over his son Hunter's troubled private life. The trained lawyer's battle with severe drug addiction has been well-documented. The cocaine revelation immediately sparked unsubstantiated speculation in right-wing circles that the recovering drug user was somehow responsible. Trump himself jumped on the bandwagon with a typically rambling, insult-laden message. The former President said - does anybody really believe the Cocaine is for the use by anyone other than Hunter & Joe Biden? Republican leader Ron DeSantis, long viewed as the most viable challenger to twice-impeached president Donald Trump, also hit out. The Florida Governor told outkick host Tomi Lahren - a lot of us have believed, Biden administration has been blowing it on a lot of fronts.

India Weather Update: IMD predicts light rainfall today in Delhi, issues red alert in Kerala

German police have apprehended seven men accused of planning a terrorist attack, inspired by the Islamic State (IS) group, in the country. The suspects, originating from central Asia, were known to "each other for some time and share radical Islamic ideology", according to the federal prosecutor's office.

The men had travelled to Germany from Ukraine around the same time when the conflict in Ukraine broke out in early 2022.

What they had planned

Forming a cell in June 2022, the group aimed to "commit headline-grabbing terrorist attacks in the spirit of IS".

Prosecutors revealed that the suspects had identified potential targets in Germany, scouted crime scenes, and attempted to acquire weapons before their plans were thwarted, reports news agency AFP.

"The suspects had already contemplated targets in Germany, scouted potential crime scenes and attempted to procure weapons."

However, authorities emphasised that there was no "tangible terrorist plot" in progress at the time of their arrest.

The suspects, consisting of five Turkmenistan citizens, one from Tajikistan, and another from Kyrgyzstan, were apprehended by German police in various locations within the western region of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Prosecutors alleged that, apart from the Kyrgyz suspect, the men had been "collecting funds for IS since April 2022", intending to send the money abroad to support the organisation.

Additionally, Dutch authorities arrested a Tajikistani suspect and his Kyrgyz wife, accusing them of "committing preparatory acts for terrorism offences". The male suspect was "also suspected of membership of the terrorist organisation Islamic State".

The Washington Post reports that German prosecutors have identified the men arrested there as Ata A., a citizen of Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan national Abrorjon K., and five citizens of Tajikistan — Mukhammadshujo A., Nuriddin K., Shamshud N., Said S. and Raboni Z.

Acute threat of Islamic terrorism

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasised the acute threat of Islamic terrorism and commended the focused efforts of security forces in combating such threats. "Our security forces remain firmly focused on tackling Islamic terrorism," said Faeser as reported by AFP.
