Afghanistan's rulers Taliban on Tuesday said that all activities by Sweden in the nation must halt. The move comes a month after the burning of Quran outside a mosque in Sweden's capital Stockholm last month.

A 17-year-old Canadian has been brought for questioning by Japanese authorities after it was discovered he carved his name into an eighth-century UNESCO-listed temple in the historic city of Nara. The incident took place in the 1,200-year-old Toshodaiji Kondo temple complex on the afternoon of July 7. ''On the southwest side of Toshodaiji Kondo, there are wooden pillars supporting the roof. On the pillars to the side, the boy carved ‘Julian' on a wooden pillar about 170 centimetres above the ground with his nail,'' a police official was quoted as saying by CNN. The teenager defaced the pillar, situated in the temple's "Golden Hall" which is a designated national treasure. His parents were with him when he vandalised the ancient property, writing the word "Julian" by scratching the pillar. A tourist saw the teen defacing the pillar and told him to stop before notifying the temple employees. A monk at the temple said, "even though it [vandalism] may have been done without malice, it is still regrettable and sad". Under Japanese law, any person found damaging an object of "important cultural property" could face up to five years in prison or a fine of $2,120 (¥300,000; £1,650). The temple is one of the eight sites that make up the historic monuments of ancient Nara which was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. “Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines and the excavated remains of the great Imperial Palace provide a vivid picture of life in the Japanese capital in the 8th century, a period of profound political and cultural change,” reads the UNESCO inscription. WATCH | Climate activists turn Rome's iconic Trevi Fountain black × Man defaces Colosseum This is not the first instance where a tourist has been found defacing a centuries-old, historical monument. Last month, a tourist from Britain carved his and his girlfriend's name into an internal wall of the 2,000-year-old Colosseum in Rome. After becoming a subject of ridicule internationally, 27-year-old Ivan Dimitrov, the culprit, said he was unaware of the antiquity of the ancient monument. Also read | Tourist who carved names on Colosseum says he didn't realise it was 2,000-years-old In a letter addressed to the Italian authorities, Dimitrov said only now did he realise “the seriousness of the deed committed”. “Through these lines I would like to address my heartfelt and honest apologies to the Italians and to the whole world for the damage caused to an asset which, in fact, is the heritage of all humanity,” he stated in the letter. If convicted, he faces a fine of at least $16,500 (€15,000; £12,900) and a prison term of up to five years. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

New Zealand has expressed confidence in the advice of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), regarding Japan's plan to release treated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean.

On Monday, the nation said it has "full confidence" in the nuclear watchdog's advice.

What New Zealand said about discharge of treated 'nuclear' water from Fukushima plant

New Zealand's Foreign Minister, Nanaia Mahuta, met with IAEA director general Rafael Grossi in Auckland to discuss the IAEA's report on the proposed release.

As per AFP, during the meeting, Mahuta commended the IAEA's science-based approach and emphasised the need for meaningful engagement with the Pacific region due to its history with nuclear testing.

In a statement, the minister said: "I reiterated New Zealand's full confidence in the IAEA's advice and commended their science-based approach."

"I also felt it was important to draw attention to the Pacific's traumatic experience with nuclear testing and asked directly that meaningful engagement continues with the Pacific region on the proposed release," she added.

The nation itself has a strong nuclear-free policy and does not have any nuclear power stations.

What 'advice' did the nuclear watchdog give?

Last week, the UN nuclear watchdog gave the green light to a years-long project that looks to discharge treated water from the Fukushima plant, which was devastated by an earthquake and tsunami which hit the eastern coast of Japan in 2011.

The IAEA stated that Tokyo's scheme to release accumulated water from the nuclear plant and into the sea over the coming decades would have a "negligible" radiological impact on people and the environment.

As per the agency, the discharge is "consistent with relevant international safety standards" and "the controlled, gradual discharges of the treated water to the sea... would have a negligible radiological impact on people and the environment."

News agency AFP reports that at the Fukushima nuclear plant, approximately 1.33 million cubic metres of water, including groundwater, rainwater, and cooling water, have accumulated since the 2011 tsunami caused multiple meltdowns. The plant operator treats the water to remove most radioactive elements, except for tritium, and intends to dilute it before discharging it into the ocean over several decades.

Criticism by other nations

While New Zealand supports the IAEA's stance, Japan's plan has raised concerns among neighbouring countries. North Korea has criticised the IAEA for supporting the scheme, and China has announced that it will place a ban on certain Japanese food imports. Additionally, public concern has also grown in South Korea.

New Zealand backs UN nuclear watchdog's approval of Fukushima water release

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, has expressed his intention to prioritise "kindness" in his company's new Threads app. He says, that in contrast to Twitter, which has faced an increase in hate speech and misinformation, Threads is an attempt at creating a friendly and successful platform. However, within days of the platform being launched, right-wing figures have already begun challenging the app's content moderation practices by posting hate speech and misinformation.

Billionaire Satanists and the ambition to "blow up" on Threads

Research by Media Matters shows that within "24 hours of Threads' release, right-wing and fringe figures signed up for the platform". As per the Guardian, among them are white nationalist Richard Spencer, the former Breitbart writer, and white supremacists such as Nick Fuentes, an outspoken antisemite.

Of these, Fuentes was suspended from Instagram in 2019. On July 6th, in a live stream, he announced to his followers that he has signed up for Threads using a fake Instagram account.

Instagram's guidelines prohibit support or praise of terrorism, organised crime, and hate groups, promising to remove content that contains credible threats or hate speech.

However, just like other social media platforms, Instagram too has faced difficulties in controlling hate speech and misinformation.

Morning brief: Biden defends cluster bombs, Dutch PM resigns, and more

Artificial Intelligence has been the buzzword across the globe for the last year and a half. AI technology is breaking new barriers by the minute and a new study released this week by Harvard Medical School promises another breakthrough: AI-assisted brain surgery.

For decades, neurosurgeons have struggled to understand the tumours (or glioma, the most common type of brain tumour). To perform surgery to remove the tumour, the doctors need a host of information, so as not to damage the surrounding brain tissue.

They take a piece of sample and send it to a pathology lab to get real-time, immediate feedback. The pathologist runs the tests and informs them whether they are cutting the correct issue or what kind of cancer the patient has.

Usually, the entire process takes 15 minutes in state-of-the-art medical facilities. However, the analysis is not always accurate and it happens when the patient's skull is wide open on the surgical table.

“This process is not error-proof,” Dr. Kun-Hsing Yu, a professor at Harvard Medical School, told The Guardian.

“People are under stress, and the quality of the slide is sometimes not great, so occasionally we will have misdiagnosis arising from this fast process,” he added.

Developing the AI tool

To minimise the error and time wastage, Yu and his team turned their attention towards machine learning in which AI technology learns patterns without explicit instructions from a programmer and can help make the analysis easier.

The team developed an AI tool named Cryosection Histopathology Assessment and Review Machine, also called CHARM. The tech was developed using more than 2,300 brain tumour samples from 1,524 people with glioma. These samples “taught” CHARM what to look for when analysing tumour samples.

×

After teaching the model, CHARM was tested on a new set of brain samples. Astonishingly, the tool was 93 per cent accurate at spotting tumours and classifying them into the three major types of gliomas. Developing the AI tool To minimise the error and time wastage, Yu and his team turned their attention towards machine learning in which AI technology learns patterns without explicit instructions from a programmer and can help make the analysis easier. The team developed an AI tool named Cryosection Histopathology Assessment and Review Machine, also called CHARM. The tech was developed using more than 2,300 brain tumour samples from 1,524 people with glioma. These samples “taught” CHARM what to look for when analysing tumour samples. Astonishingly, the tool was 93 per cent accurate at spotting tumours and classifying them into the three major types of gliomas. Notably, each type of glioma has a different molecular makeup, a different pattern of growth and speed and, therefore, differing forms of treatment. Most importantly, CHARM is fast as it provided accurate analysis of some tumour cells in less than one second.
