"Environmental samples from the water system on the Bibby Stockholm (barge) have shown levels of Legionella bacteria which require further investigation," said a spokesperson at the Home Office, as quoted by Reuters.

"As a precautionary measure, all 39 asylum seekers who arrived on the vessel this week are being disembarked while further assessments are undertaken."

"No individuals on board have presented with symptoms of legionnaires' (disease), and asylum seekers are being provided with appropriate advice and support," added the spokesperson.

The potentially fatal bacteria 'legionella' can cause lung infections like legionnaires’ disease or Pontiac fever.

It is highly infectious and can be contacted by merely breathing a small droplet of infected water in the air.

The hulking three-story Bibby Stockholm barge has the capacity to house around 500 people in over 200 bedrooms. While it was currently housing 39 people, as per Reuters, more people were expected to be moved in over the coming weeks.

The discovery of legionella comes as an embarrassment for PM Rishi Sunak's government as it tries to showcase its tough new immigration policy. The barge in question was part of the government's high-profile strategy to deter people from arriving in the country on small boats.

Since January, 'cat island' Cyprus has lost hundreds of thousands of its feline population to a fatal strain of coronavirus called the Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP).

While the coronavirus strain is not transmittable to humans, it has wrecked havoc on the nation's cat population.

Now, to save the beloved cats that roam the island, unused coronavirus vaccination meant for human use will be made available to the furry residents of Cyprus, announced officials on Thursday.&nbsp;

<h2>Human vaccines for felines</h2>

As per an AFP report, the government has given the green light to this vaccination use after receiving a recommendation from the nations'&nbsp;agriculture ministry.

"Stocks of preparations that were used to treat human coronavirus cases and are no longer used can be made available," said Cyprus' cabinet in a statement.

It will be supplied through veterinary services in the form of anti-Covid pills.

<h2>The death toll</h2>

Animal advocates claim that an estimated 300,000 cats have been lost to the coronavirus strain since January.&nbsp;

In the southern part of the island, Dinos Ayiomamitis, head of Cats PAWS Cyprus and vice-president of Cyprus Voice for Animals, estimates that a third of the cats have succumbed to the virus.

However, the island's veterinary association argues that this number is an exaggeration and has put the number at under 10,000.

As the FIP outbreak continues to spread, animal rights organisations have raised the concern that Cyprus may soon come to be known as "the island of dead cats."&nbsp;

<h2>What is Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP)?</h2>

As per the Cornell University website, Feline infectious peritonitis is a viral disease in cats caused by certain strains of the feline coronavirus.

While most feline strains of coronavirus, known as feline enteric coronavirus (FeCV), are found in the gastrointestinal tract do not cause significant disease, in some cases it can become the dangerous disease known as FIPV.

As per the website, in about 10 per cent of FeCV-infected cats, the virus can mutate, infecting white blood cells and spreading throughout the cat's body. This triggers an intense inflammatory reaction, often in the abdomen, kidney, or brain, leading to the development of FIP.

Once a cat develops clinical FIP, the disease is usually progressive and almost always fatal.

Researchers have discovered a method for converting used plastic by transforming it into soap.

Some 200 million tonnes of plastic waste is produced in the world annually, yet a staggering 80 per cent of this waste finds its way to landfills, with a little fraction – less than 10 per cent – recycled.

Plastics are chemically similar to fatty acids, a key component in soap production. Nevertheless, the size was a problem molecularly, as the plastics are very large about 3,000 atoms long, whereas fatty acids are much smaller.&nbsp;

'The Christmas Magic'

The solution was found by Guoliang Liu, an assistant professor of chemistry at Virginia Tech.&nbsp;The concept, published in the journal Science, revolves around the conversion of polyethene into fatty acids and, subsequently, into soap. He said that the solution came unusually.

"It was Christmas. I was watching the fireplace."&nbsp;

Liu elaborated on this, explaining that&nbsp;burning plastic would work the same way.

"Firewood is mostly made of polymers such as cellulose. The combustion of firewood breaks these polymers into short chains, and then into small gaseous molecules before full oxidation to carbon dioxide. If we similarly break down the synthetic polyethylene molecules but stop the process before they break all the way down to small gaseous molecules, then we should obtain short-chain, polyethylene-like molecules."

The research team built an oven-like reactor to be used to burn plastic.

The temperature at the bottom was kept hot to break up the polymer chains, while the top was cool enough to stop them from breaking down too far.

They then collected the residue and found that the product they had created is a type of wax, a short-chain polyethene, and then converted the wax into soap.&nbsp;

Scientists discover new way to convert plastic into soap; here's how

Cooking can be a relaxing activity, but also a task. Sometimes deciding what to cook, especially with a limited pantry, can be the toughest thing you can do. To help people in such a scenario, a New Zealand supermarket has come up with an Artificial Intelligence (AI) based app.

The app called 'Savey Meal-bot' which was created by supermarket chain Pak 'n' Save asks users to enter in the various ingredients they have and auto-generates a meal plan or a recipe. But, the scenario has proven to be too good. The AI is suggesting people the weirdest, downright poisonous recipes.

<h2>Move over Cinderella's poison apple</h2>

You've heard of poison apples, but this is a new one. The app is suggesting out of the box recipes like 'Poison bread sandwiches' and 'mosquito repellent roast potatoes'.&nbsp;

These "unique" experiments came up when customers began experimenting with entering a wide range of household shopping products into the apps.&nbsp;

One recipe that was dubbed "aromatic water mix" was the recipe for chlorine gas, which, as per the bot, was "the perfect non-alcoholic beverage to quench your thirst and refresh your senses."

It recommended that the users should "Serve chilled and enjoy the refreshing fragrance."

Chlorine gas when inhaled can cause lung damage or death.

<h2>How it came to light</h2>

The curious bot and its weird recipes were shared on X, formerly Twitter. This prompted other New Zealanders to experiment and share their own results on social media.

A supermarket spokesperson chalked it up to a "small minority" using the bot inappropriately. He said they were disappointed to see "a small minority have tried to use the tool inappropriately and not for its intended purpose."

In a statement, the supermarket said it was "fine-tuning" the controls of the bot to ensure that it was safe and useful for the users.

In a warning notice, they warned users that the recipes were "not reviewed by a human being" and that the company cannot guarantee "that any recipe will be a complete or balanced meal, or suitable for consumption."

"You must use your own judgement before relying on or making any recipe produced by Savey Meal-bot," said the company.

Luke Valentine, a contestant on the 25th season of Big Brother, has been removed from the reality TV show for using a racial slur (N-word) in Tuesday's episode. Following a massive uproar online over the incident, the CBS network issued a statement assuring Luke's removal with immediate effect emphasising its "zero-tolerance policy" regarding racism.&nbsp;

The network said, "Luke violated the ‘Big Brother’ code of conduct, and there is zero tolerance in the house for using a racial slur. He has been removed from the house. His departure will be addressed in Thursday night’s show."

Who is Luke Valentine?

Luke Valentine is a 30-year-old illustrator from Florida, United States, making him one of the older houseguests on the show. He creates a webcomic called Spaltterbrain and has a huge following online as an artist, where he&nbsp;is responsible for all the content and branding.&nbsp;

Luke entered the show describing himself as an "airhead" and a "starving artist," with all confidence in winning the game. A video clip was shared on Instagram on August 5 with him saying, "I know I’m going to win ‘Big Brother’ because I got the hunger to win at all costs."

The long-running reality show follows the lives of different people living together in a house with cameras and microphones capturing every moment. In the end, one person wins the show and gets a cash prize of $750,000.&nbsp;

What did Luke exactly say?

In the clip, Luke used the 'N-word' while he was in a room with Cory Wurtenberger, Hisam Goueli and Jared Fields. He said, "I'm in the f---ing cheese room, n----." He took a pause and thought about what he said and tried covering up his word by replacing the "N-word" with "dude."&nbsp;

His casual attitude led to a huge uproar on the internet with an ex-contestant urging for his removal.&nbsp;

Andy Herren, the winner of season 15, posted on X (formerly Twitter), "Production should remove Luke. Set an example. Show current and future players that language like that will not be tolerated. #BB25."

Sajid Ali Sadpara is still grieving for his father but has found a way to pay his tributes to his old man.&nbsp;Sadpara, wearing his stitched-down coverall with Pakistan's green flag, routinely climbs the 8,611-metre K2 mountain peak to clean litter. The mountain is his father's final resting place.&nbsp;

Spent oxygen canisters, mangled tents and snarled ropes discarded over&nbsp;decades by climbers questing for the summit is the kind of litter Sadpara often encounters when setting up from the K2 Basecamp. Over a week,&nbsp;Sadpara's five-member team is able to collect some 200&nbsp;kilogrammes of litter from the world's second tallest mountain peak.&nbsp;

"I'm doing it from my heart.&nbsp;This is our mountain.&nbsp;We are the custodians," the 25-year-old was quoted as saying by AFP.

<h2>The accident&nbsp;</h2>

It was two years ago during a perilous winter season that Sadpara embarked upon K2 ascent with his&nbsp;father and two foreigners when illness forced him back.

"The three men who carried on were later discovered dead below the 'bottleneck'&nbsp;-- an overhang that looks like a frozen tidal wave on the final stretch before the summit," read the AFP report.&nbsp;

After recovering his father's body,&nbsp;Sadpara performed Islamic rites at a camp and marked the spot with GPS coordinates.&nbsp;

When quizzed about his devotion to the mountain,&nbsp;Sadpara says, "We want to be on mountains just for mental peace".&nbsp;

However, he believes that K2 is no longer as beautiful as it once used to be.&nbsp;

"We have destroyed its beauty with our own hands."

Despite the litter,&nbsp;Sadpara is committed to the task, after all, the mountain remains the shrine of his fallen father.&nbsp;

"Cleanliness is half of faith. Climbing to the top is a different thing," he explains. "Cleaning is something that you feel personally from the heart."

<h2>K2 - a peak difficult to conquer&nbsp;</h2>

K2 was formed after India collided&nbsp;with Asia over 50 million years ago. The collision resulted in the sprouting of the Karakoram range of mountains that span across modern-day Pakistan's&nbsp;northeastern Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Despite being 238 metres shorter than Mount Everest, located in Nepal, K2 has the reputation of being far more challenging. It&nbsp;requires more technical skills than those needed to conquer&nbsp;the tallest peak in the world.&nbsp;

The mountain was first conquered by Italians in 1954 and despite wind speeds in excess of 200 kilometres per hour and temperatures dipping below minus 60 degree&nbsp;Celsius (minus 76 Fahrenheit) during adverse conditions, the peak remains a dream ascent for mountaineering&nbsp;enthusiasts.&nbsp;
