<p>However, the choice of date coincides with the arrival of the&nbsp;European settlers at Sydney Harbour in 1788.</p>

<p>For some, the date marks the start of a violent colonial campaign that nearly erased the Aboriginals from their native lands.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Indigenous Australians make up 3.8 per cent of the country's 26 million people and have occupied the land for at least 65,000 years.</p>

<p>Counted among the most disadvantaged people in the country who face several issues including poor health and education, they have been rejecting the holiday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Aboriginal elder Adrian Burragubba attended one of the rallies and said "Australia Day doesn't mean anything to us".</p>

<p>Captain Cook's statue was reported felled near Jacka Boulevard, cut off at the shins and sprayed with the words: "The colony will fall."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Elsewhere, former British monarch Queen Victoria's statue was smeared with red paint.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Victorian premier, Jacinta Allan condemned the attack and said this sort of "vandalism" did not have a place in Australian society.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We will be working with the council to repair and reinstate the statue in St Kilda that has been vandalised overnight," said Allan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are launching new pathways in order to learn French in public schools with the initiative "French for All, French for a Better Future". We are developing the network of Alliances françaises, with new centres to learn French," read the statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are creating international classes which will allow students, who do not necessarily speak French, to join our universities. Last, but not least, we will facilitate the visa process for any former Indian students who studied in France," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Macron arrived in India on Thursday (Jan 25) afternoon and landed in the northern Indian city of Jaipur where he, alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi, took part in a roadshow.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Macron, the sixth French leader to attend India's Republic Day parade, has been a trusted ally of New Delhi. After India extended the invitation for the parade, following the alleged refusal by the US president, Macron immediately accepted the request.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India had ordered 36 Rafale jets from France in 2015 and&nbsp;the Indian Air Force received the last of these fighter aircraft in December 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In July 2023, during PM Modi's Paris visit, the two countries signed up to "extend their ground-breaking defence cooperation in advanced aeronautical technologies by supporting the joint development of a combat aircraft engine".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two countries are also key partners in&nbsp;the Indo-Pacific region, where they remain "open to inviting strategic partner countries in the region to participate in Indo-French [naval] exercises".</p>

<p>Despite admitting to starting the fire in the trial that started in September last year, Aoba's attorneys entered a&nbsp;not-guilty plea. His team&nbsp;argued that even if he was to be convicted, he should be given a reduced sentence on account of his "state of diminished capacity", adding that he was delusional at the time of the attack.</p>

<p>Notably, Aoba&nbsp;claimed the anime studio had stolen his ideas after rejecting his novels at an annual award contest the studio hosts. However, to this date, there is absolutely no evidence that the studio plagiarised his work.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The boy’s family has also alleged medical negligence by a private doctor in providing treatment to the young student that led to his death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday (Jan 16) stayed the decision by the Allahabad High Court ordering the inspection of the Shahi Idgah mosque complex in Mathura by a court-appointed commissioner in connection with the Krishna Janmabhoomi case.</p>

<p>The bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and Dipankar Datta presided over the case and stayed the December 14, 2023, order by the HC. Justice Khanna said some legal issues needed sorting out, adding that the application filed before the HC, seeking the appointment of a commissioner was “very vague”.</p>

<p>“Can an application be made like this? We have reservations about the application. Look at the prayer. It’s so vague. Read it. You cannot make an omnibus application like this. You have to be very clear about what you want the local commissioner to do,” said Justice Khanna.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the Mosque committee which has approached the SC, argued that the Allahabad HC could not have passed the order when an application seeking rejection of the suit was pending.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The apex court added the issue of the transfer was also coming up which means that the HC court order cannot be executed.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Issue notice. Tag with transfer matter, list on 23rd January. Proceedings before the High Court can continue but commission cannot be executed till next date," the court said, noting that the next hearing will take place on January 23.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cape Verde went through its last malaria peak in the late 1980s. Since then, it has been confined to two islands: Santiago and Boa Vista. Both the islands have now been malaria-free since 2017.</p>

<p>In 2007, eliminating malaria became a national objective for Cape Verde, and subsequently, it came up with a strategic malaria plan from 2009 to 2013.</p>
