The United States is "privately encouraging" Ukrainian leaders to show they are willing to deal with Moscow and end their stand against holding peace negotiations until Russian President Vladimir Putin is removed from office.

As per a report by the Washington Post quoting people familiar with the discussions, the request made by American officials was not intended to pressure Ukraine into entering negotiations. Instead, it is reportedly a "calculated attempt" to ensure that Kyiv maintains the support of other countries hesitant to ignite a war.

Netherlands staged a massive upset in the ongoing T20 World Cup at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday after defeating South Africa in their last Super-12 encounter, ensuring India a place in the semi-finals.

The South African batters choked and failed to chase a moderate score of 159 runs as the Dutch bowlers restricted them to 145/8 in their 20 overs.

Brandon Glover starred with the ball for the Netherlands as the pacer claimed three wickets in his two overs.

The clash between Pakistan and Bangladesh has now become a virtual quarterfinal as the winner of the clash will join India in the semi-finals from group two.

Chasing the target, South African openers Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock got off to a quick start with de Kock smashing a four in the first over, following it with a six in the second over.

Netherland pacer Fred Klaassen dismissed de Kock in the third over to draw first blood for the team.

The Dutch team's potent pacer Paul van Meekeren removed the SA captain in the sixth over sending both the openers back to the pavilion.

Rilee Rossouw did play some attacking shots in his brief stay but was dismissed for 25(19) by Glover in the 10th over, reducing South Africa to 68/3 at the end of 10 overs.

Proteas batter Aiden Markram was dismissed by Fred Klaassen in the 13th over even as he looked in fine touch and was stitching an important partnership with David Miller.

In the 16th over, Glover dismissed Miller to dent the Proteas' chances of winning the match and advancing into the semi-finals. Bas de Leede got rid of Heinrich Klaasen in the 18th over, the only recognised batter at the crease to knock on the door of victory.

After Klaasen's wicket, it was mere formality for the Dutch team as the South African team needed 36 runs off the last two overs with no recognised batter at the crease and a limping Keshav Maharaj batting alongside Kagiso Rabada.

The Netherlands gave away just 12 runs in the last over to secure a 13-run victory, their first-ever on South Africa.

Earlier, a late flourish from Colin Ackermann and Tom Cooper helped the Netherlands reach a total of 158/4 against South Africa in its last Super-12 encounter at the Adelaide Oval in the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Ackermann top-scored for the Dutch with an explosive unbeaten 41 from 26 balls. Experienced Tom Cooper also made a vital contribution of 35 runs from 19 balls. Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj took two wickets for the Proteas.

Put into bat first, the Netherlands were off to a brilliant start, scoring 17 runs in the first 2 overs with Stephan Myburgh being the aggressive one. Max O'Dowd looked to push the ball into the gaps and play second fiddle to his partner.

The openers struck a total of eight elegant boundaries in the first six overs taking their team to 48 runs without loss at the end of the powerplay, making it their best powerplay score in this tournament.

Just when the Netherlands looked on the path to getting to a good score, Aiden Markram dismissed Myburgh in the ninth over to give his team the first breakthrough.

Right-hander Cooper attacked the bowlers from the word go and smacked a six early in his inning. The aggression rubbed off on O'Dowd and he too slammed a six seeing his partner go after the bowlers. The Dutch team finished at 70/1 at the end of 10 overs.

Left-arm finger spinner Maharaj was hit for a six in the 13th over but scalped the wicket of O'Dowd to bring Ackermann to the crease. The bowler also dismissed Cooper in the 15th over to bring two new batters to the crease for the last five overs.

Pacer Anrich Nortje sent back Bas de Leede in the 18th over, ending his scratchy inning where inn he scored just one run off seven balls.

Thanks to Ackermann's late blitz, the Netherlands managed to score 31 runs off the last two overs helping the team reach 158/4 in 20 overs.

Colin Ackermann was declared the 'Player of the Match' for his crucial knock.

‘Peru Reacts’: Thousands of Peruvians take to streets, demand resignation of President Castillo

With the rather absurd trend of targeting popular paintings and art pieces by climate change activists gaining pace, another pair of such activists has now targetted two paintings by Spanish master Francisco Goya at a museum in Madrid.

Reportedly, two activists of a climate group named Extinction Rebellion on Saturday glued their hands to the frames of the two paintings at the Prado Museum. They also scrawled '+1.5ºC' on the wall which was a reference to the Paris agreement of capping warming at 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

The group also took to Twitter to share the video, saying it loved the act of its volunteers.

The United Kingdom's counterterrorism police in a recent statement have said that last week's firebombing attack on a migrant processing centre was motivated by "terrorist ideology".

On Saturday, the police said that evidence from the scene, including the devices used, suggests "an extreme right-wing motivation behind the attack," and that the attack was "motivated by a terrorist ideology", reports AFP.

On October 30, homemade bombs were thrown at an immigrant centre in the southeast port town of Dover. The attack on the Western Jet Foil Border Force centre left two of the staff with minor injuries.

The attack was carried out by a 66-year-old man who was later found dead nearby. Earlier, the police had refuted the terrorism angle, saying, "What appears clear is that this despicable offence was targeted and likely to be driven by some form of hate filled grievance, though this may not necessarily meet the threshold of terrorism."

According to the Powerball organisers, the odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292.2 million. Additionally, if two winners choose the same set of numbers, the jackpot would be split between them.

A day after US President Biden said coal plants are too expensive to operate and that his government was "going to be shutting these plants down all across America", he has received stiff resistance from his own partyman and influential West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin.

A day after US President Biden said coal plants are too expensive to operate and that his government was "going to be shutting these plants down all across America", he has received stiff resistance from his own partyman and influential West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. Reportedly, Manchin said the statement made by President Biden was not only outrageous, "and divorced from reality but also ignores the severe economic pain the American people are feeling because of rising energy costs.” Manchin, the democrat who has close ties to the coal industry and is one of the prominent voices in the blue camp, continued the attack and said the people of America were losing trust in Biden. “Comments like these are the reason the American people are losing trust in President Biden and instead believe he does not understand the need to have an all in energy policy that would keep our nation totally energy independent and secure," said Manchin. "It seems his positions change depending on the audience and the politics of the day. Politicising our nation’s energy policies would only bring higher prices and more pain for the American people." WATCH | WION Climate Tracker: America's biggest energy bill ever| How clean is Biden's clean energy plan? × As reported by WION, Biden made the rather bold call at an event in California on Friday. "I was in Massachusetts about a month ago on the site of the largest old coal plant in America. Guess what? It cost them too much money. They can't count. No one is building new coal plants because they can’t rely on it. Even if they have all the coal guaranteed for the rest of the existence of the plant," said Biden. Read more: 'We're going to shut all coal plants in America, replace with wind and solar power,' says Biden The Democrat leader added that his government was going to focus on wind and solar energy which will be using the same infrastructure set up as the one used for the coal-fired electricity transmission. "So it's going to become a wind generation. And all they're doing is, it’s going to save them a hell of a lot of money and using the same transmission line that they transmitted the coal-fired electric on, we're going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar power." Notably, this is not the first time that Biden has come down on the coal industry. In the lead-up to the US Presidential race, Biden had said that coal miners should learn to code. “Anybody who can go down 300 to 3,000 feet in a mine can sure as hell learn to program as well…Give me a break! 'We're going to shut all coal plants in America, replace with wind and solar power,' says Biden

Following a confrontation in which a far-right MP yelled "back to Africa" at a black colleague that sparked outrage across the political spectrum, the French National Assembly agreed Friday to punish him with an unusual 15-day suspension and salary cut.

Gregoire de Fournas, a recently elected National Rally member, has disputed that the outburst was a personal racial assault and has stated that he was making reference to a ship in the Mediterranean delivering rescued migrants.

Under its norms, which in general defend MPs' right to free expression while in session, the National Assembly's lower house has recommended the heaviest penalty imaginable.

Only twice in the history of Charles de Gaulle's Fifth Republic in France, which began in 1958, did an MP get such a censure.

The event occurred at a time when immigration tensions are at an all-time high and President Emmanuel Macron's administration has promised a new crackdown amid claims that it has failed to stop new arrivals or deport those whose residence applications have been denied.

Carlos Martens Bilongo of the left-leaning France Unbowed party (LFI) grilled the administration on Thursday on the SOS Mediterranee NGO's request for assistance in finding a port for the ship that recently saved 234 migrants at sea.

"It should go back to Africa!" interrupted de Fournas, a winegrower from the southwestern Gironde department, drawing gasps of shock from many in parliament.

The pronouns "it" and "he" have the same pronunciation in French, which led some to believe that de Fournas was specifically targeting Bilongo.
