Midfielder Kevin De Bruyne and goalkeeper Ederson will miss Manchester City's FA Cup quarter-final game against Newcastle United due to injuries, manager Pep Guardiola said on Friday.

Ederson was forced to come off during their 1-1 Premier League draw with Liverpool following a challenge on Darwin Nunez, conceding a penalty.

Meanwhile, De Bruyne has a groin strain which resulted in him being left out of Belgium's squad for friendlies with Ireland and England this month.

"Kevin's not ready. He already played in Anfield with some problems. But he's getting better. He's not ready for tomorrow. We spoke with Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco and he decided," Guardiola told reporters ahead of Saturday's game.

"I'm grateful because he didn't feel good and he could recover for the rest of the season. He played well (against Liverpool). All the players have problems, but the day after he didn't feel good, it's better to take care.

"Eddie (Ederson) is getting better, hopefully he'll be ready after the international break. Tomorrow, for sure (he will not play). He'll have two weeks off then, he'll recover, we'll see how he feels."

Guardiola also confirmed Jack Grealish has returned from a groin injury and will be a part of the squad. Grealish has not played since their 6-2 win over Luton Town in the FA Cup fifth round.

City are facing Newcastle for the fourth time this season, having beaten them twice in the league, but Eddie Howe's side knocked them out of the League Cup in September.

"This season and previous ones, since Eddie Howe was there and the people from Saudi Arabia took over (the club), it's always been tight games. We don't expect anything different," Guardiola said.

"We have an incredible chance at home with our people. We need the support of our fans in home games like we had against Manchester United (in a 3-1 comeback win), I don't remember that environment for a long time.

"Tomorrow isn't an exception. We need it to reach the semi-final at Wembley again."

FA Cup: Manchester City’s injured duo of Kevin de Bruyne and Ederson to miss Newcastle clash

A Chelsea fan pleaded guilty to assaulting Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka after invading the pitch to celebrate a goal at Stamford Bridge.

Jordan Chidley was involved in the incident with Dubravka in December after Chelsea's Mykhailo Mudryk scored a late equaliser in the League Cup quarter-final against Newcastle.

The 25-year-old admitted assault by beating and unlawfully going onto a playing area at a football match.

District judge Neeta Minhas issued a three-year, football banning order and fined him £807 at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday.

Prosecutor Malachy Pakenham told the court that Chidley climbed down onto the pitch after the goal and ran over to Dubravka.

"The steward tries to grab him, he then puts his arms out and grabs and touches the goalie who pulls away from him," Pakenham said.

The prosecutor told the court the contact was "quite minimal".

In Chidley's defence, the court heard what he did was not "malicious" but "it was just euphoria".

It was said that Chidley is "not a football hooligan" and this was a "one-off incident".

Chidley was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £323 and costs of £85.

Speaking after the incident, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: "I have always said the safety of the players, coaches, managers, referees, linesmen, that's the priority in any football match.

Premier League: Chelsea fan guilty of assaulting Newcastle United's Martin Dubravka

Arsenal climbed up to second in the Premier League with a 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest as Aston Villa's unbeaten home record was ended by a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle on Tuesday.

Goals from Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka maintained the Gunners' title push at the City Ground ahead of their clash at home to leaders Liverpool on Sunday.

Arsenal's first away win since early December takes Mikel Arteta's men within two points of Liverpool, who are in action on Wednesday at home to Chelsea.

The visitors struggled to make their dominance of possession count until 25 minutes from time when Jesus' effort from a narrow angle sneaked between the legs of former Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner.

Saka then fired home his 10th goal of the season from Jesus' cross.

"Against this team at home I have seen a lot of teams that have suffered," said Arteta. "I am pleased with the performance and winning the game."

Substitute Taiwo Awoniyi set up a grandstand finish when he outmuscled William Saliba to slot home on 89 minutes.

But it was too little, too late for Forest who slip to within two points of the relegation zone and with the threat of a points deduction hanging over the club for breaching the Premier League's financial rules.

<h2>Schar shines for Newcastle</h2>

Villa failed to join Arsenal on 46 points after losing at home in the league for the first time since February last year.

Unai Emery's men had won 16 of their 17 Premier League games at Villa Park since, but gave themselves a mountain to climb as Newcastle centre-back Fabian Schar scored twice from corners in the first half.

Newcastle had the second worst away record in the league before kick-off, but were cruising towards their first victory on the road since September when Alex Moreno turned into his own net under pressure from Jacob Murphy.

"It was mixed emotions for me because that team is an elite team. The mixed part is that we haven't seen that for a number of weeks," said Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, whose squad has been ravaged by injuries this season.

"We looked much like ourselves and we have players coming back."

Ollie Watkins reduced the arrears with his first goal for seven games and then had a second ruled out for offside.

But Villa are now looking over their shoulders in the race for a place in next season's Champions League as Tottenham can leapfrog them into fourth with victory over Brentford on Wednesday.

Newcastle climb up to seventh and within 11 points of Villa.

<h2>Luton thrash Brighton</h2>

Luton climbed out of the bottom three thanks to a stunning 4-0 win over Brighton as Elijah Adebayo scored a hat-trick.

Adebayo nodded in the opener after just 18 seconds and the Hatters were 2-0 up inside three minutes when Chiedozie Ogbene beat Jason Steele to a long pass over the top to walk the ball into an empty net.

Adebayo calmly slotted in at Steele's near post to make it 3-0 before the break and completed his hat-trick 11 minutes into the second half.

Everton drop into the relegation zone after failing to take their chances in a 0-0 draw at Fulham.

Crystal Palace eased fears they could be dragged into a battle for survival by twice coming from behind to beat bottom-of-the-table Sheffield United 3-2.

Eberechi Eze and Michael Olise were unsurprisingly the star men as the Eagles secured just a second win in 13 games.

Twice Olise teed up Eze for stunning finishes in the first half before Olise scored the winner after the break to life Palace up to 14th.

Ben Brereton Diaz and James McAtee were on target for the Blades, but they are now nine points adrift of safety.

Premier League: Arsenal up to second in after Forest win, Newcastle end Villa's unbeaten home streak

Newcastle ended their 13-year wait to beat bitter rivals Sunderland as Alexander Isak's double inspired a 3-0 win in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.

In the first Tyne and Wear derby since 2016, Eddie Howe's side put their bitter local rivals to the sword thanks to Dan Ballard's first-half own goal and Isak's brace after the break at the Stadium of Light.

Newcastle had lost six of their previous seven clashes with Sunderland, but their composed display neutered the fired-up Black Cats and delivered a first derby success since a 1-0 victory in 2011.

After four successive defeats in all competitions, Howe hoped the derby would be a "season-changing" moment to salve the wounds from their Champions League exit and poor Premier League form.

Whether vanquishing second-tier opponents will prove transformative remains to be seen, but for now local pride was all that mattered to the 6,000 Newcastle fans who waved their black and white scarves in delight at the final whistle.

While the northeast rivalry might lack the glamour of the Manchester and north London derbies, there is no questioning the rivalry between clubs separated by just 14 miles.

Encapsulating the enmity was a bizarre incident this week when Sunderland were forced to apologise to furious fans after a stadium bar was redecorated with Newcastle colours in the corporate hospitality section of the visitors' support.

Newcastle's fans were taken to the stadium on buses in a huge police convoy, then given their tickets to the match, in a bid to avoid the violent scenes that have marred previous encounters.

Howe had enlisted the help of the few Geordies in Newcastle's squad to tell the rest of his globally assembled squad just how important the derby is.

The message clearly hit home as Newcastle dominated a frenetic encounter.

Responding to the sound and fury in the stands, tackles flew in with abandon from both teams.&nbsp;

<h2>Newcastle take derby spoils</h2>

Sunderland's Jobe Bellingham, brother of Real Madrid star Jude, caught Joelinton with a crude lunge before Jack Clarke pole-axed Sven Botman to the audible delight of the Black Cats fans.

Amid the maelstrom, Newcastle kept their nerve and snatched the lead in the 35th minute as Ballard stretched to block Joelinton's cross but only succeeded in diverting the ball into his own net.

Sunderland gifted Newcastle their second goal less than 60 seconds after the interval when Almiron robbed the dawdling Pierre Ekwah inside his own area and teed up Isak to fire home from 10 yards.

Ballard's 90th minute foul on Anthony Gordon conceded a penalty that Isak converted to cap the exclamation point on Newcastle's victory.

Non-league Maidstone United, the lowest ranked team left in the competition, clinched a surprise 1-0 win against Stevenage to reach the fourth round for the first time.

There is a 69-place gap between George Elkobi's Kent-based club and third-tier Stevenage.

But in their first third round appearance since 1988, the National League South minnows made history as Sam Corne netted a penalty in first half stoppage-time before fans flooded the pitch in celebration at the final whistle.

In Saturday's other early third round ties, Leicester took a break from their Championship promotion push to beat Millwall 3-2 at The Den.

Ten points clear at the top of the Championship, the 2021 FA Cup winners were able to rest several players and still saw off Millwall through goals from Cesare Casadei, Ricardo Pereira and Tom Cannon.

Ipswich, who are second to Leicester in the Championship, moved into the fourth round with a 3-1 win at League Two side AFC Wimbledon.

Later on Saturday, inconsistent Chelsea will look to avoid a shock at home to Championship side Preston, while surprise title chasers Aston Villa travel to second-tier Middlesbrough.

FA Cup: Alexander Isak stars as Newcastle United beat bitter rivals Sunderland; Leicester beat Millwall

Nuno Espirito Santo clinched his first win in charge of Nottingham Forest as Chris Wood's hat-trick against his former club Newcastle inspired a 3-1 victory, while Liverpool will go top of the Premier League if they avoid defeat at Burnley later on Tuesday.

Wood left Newcastle to join Forest in a £15 million ($19 million) deal in June, but had scored only four times for his new club.

The 32-year-old New Zealand international managed just two league goals for Newcastle last term, but he surpassed that meagre total with a treble in 60 minutes at St James' Park.

Alexander Isak's first half penalty put Newcastle ahead, but Wood equalised just before the break.

He struck twice more in the second half to give former Tottenham manager Nuno his maiden victory with Forest in his second game in charge after replacing the sacked Steve Cooper.

It was Forest's first win in eight games and only their second success in their last 15 matches.

Forest moved five points clear of the relegation zone ahead of the rest of the day's matches.

Newcastle's fifth defeat in their last seven games in all competitions leaves them seven points adrift of the top four in seventh place.

Nuno's first game in charge ended in a painful 3-2 stoppage-time defeat against Bournemouth at the City Ground last weekend.

Morgan Gibbs-White fired narrowly wide in the opening minutes as Forest tried to erase the bitter taste from Nuno's first game.

But Newcastle took the lead in the 23rd minute when Sweden striker Isak was tripped in the area by Ola Aina.

Isak picked himself up to squeeze the penalty past Matt Turner for his 10th goal this season.

Anthony Elanga wasted two good chances to equalise when he fired into the side-netting and shot straight at Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka moments later when a pass to the unmarked Wood looked the better option.

<h2>Lethal Wood</h2>

Forest kept battling and Dan Burn's goalbound effort was scrambled away by the visitors' defence before they equalised in first half stoppage-time.

Making amends for his earlier mistake, Elanga was the provider as he took Gibbs-White's pass and cut back a low cross that Wood finished from close-range.

Isak should have restored Newcastle's advantage seconds later, but his header lacked the power to beat Turner.

Gibbs-White nodded inches past the post immediately after the interval.

In keeping with their lively opening to the second half, Forest snatched the lead in the 53rd minute.

Elanga was the catalyst again with a superb through-ball and Wood did the rest, twisting and turning until he had space to guide a cool finish past Dubravka.

Wood was in the mood and he completed his hat-trick on the hour, surging onto Murillo's pass and slaloming around Dubravka to slot home.

Later on Boxing Day, second placed Liverpool will climb above leaders Arsenal with a draw or win against second bottom Burnley.

Third placed Aston Villa will aim to step up their unexpected title challenge with a victory at troubled Manchester United.

Premier League: Chris Wood hat-trick gives Nuno first win as Nottingham Forest boss

Manchester City threw away a 2-0 lead at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday as the Bournemouth v Luton game was abandoned after defender Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch.

Pep Guardiola's champions dominated their match at the Etihad but two late goals from Roy Hodgson's men, including a stoppage-time penalty, could have a major impact on the title race.&nbsp;

Crystal Palace have been something of a bogey team for Guardiola since he arrived in England in 2016 -- they are one of only three teams to have won at the Etihad more than once, along with Manchester United and Chelsea.

The champions enjoyed nearly three-quarters of possession in the first half but had only Jack Grealish's goal to show for their dominance.

The England winger scored for the third league game in a row, sweeping home after being found by Phil Foden in the 24th minute.

City had the ball in the net again early in the second half after Julian Alvarez's free-kick found the net but the goal was ruled out, with Rodri deemed to be in an offside position.

However, moments later the home side did extend their lead, when Rico Lewis thumped the ball into the bottom left corner.

City seemed destined to move to within one point of Premier League leaders Liverpool but instead they collapsed in dramatic fashion.

The away side scored against the run of play to give themselves hope in the 76th minute when Jeffrey Schlupp shrugged off the attentions of the City defence and crossed for Jean-Philippe Mateta&nbsp;to poke home.

City fans faced a nervous last quarter of an hour and watched in horror when referee Paul Tierney pointed to the spot after Foden fouled Mateta.

Michael Olise made no mistake, slotting home in the 95th minute and boos rang around the Etihad at the final whistle.

<h2>Game abandoned</h2>

Struggling Luton took the lead against in-form Bournemouth when Elijah Adebayo&nbsp;rose highest to head home a corner in the third minute but Dominic Solanke levelled just before the hour mark.&nbsp;

But the game was halted midway through the second half as Luton's Lockyer received medical treatment after collapsing off the ball.

The defender, who also collapsed during the play-off final win against Coventry in May before undergoing heart surgery, was removed from the pitch on a stretcher surrounded by the medical team, and there was a standing ovation from the crowd.

After the players were taken off, the Premier League confirmed the match had been abandoned.

"Our thoughts are with Tom Lockyer and all players involved in today's match."

Chelsea returned to winning ways at Stamford Bridge against bottom club Sheffield United, winning 2-0.

Manchester City threw away a 2-0 lead at home against Crystal Palace on Saturday as the Bournemouth v Luton game was abandoned after defender Tom Lockyer collapsed on the pitch. Pep Guardiola's champions dominated their match at the Etihad but two late goals from Roy Hodgson's men, including a stoppage-time penalty, could have a major impact on the title race. Premier League: Man City squander lead vs Crystal Palace; Newcastle, Chelsea win

Newcastle United will need a helping hand on the Champions League matchday 6 as they take on seven-time champions AC Milan at St James’ Park on Wednesday (Dec 13) evening. With a three-way battle for the last-second spot in the group Paris Saint-Germain are also in the race and sit in the pole position after their controversial draw on matchday 5 against the Magpies. The night will also see Porto and Shakhtar Donetsk in action as they battle for another second spot in Group H.&nbsp;

<h2>Newcastle United seek helping hand</h2>

Newcastle United would have needed a win on the final day against AC Milan to reach the Champions League R16, only for their fate to be hanging in balance after a controversial draw against Paris Saint-Germain. The 1-1 draw for Newcastle means they are third in the Group F standings with five points. Borussia Dortmund have already qualified for the knockouts, meaning three teams will scramble for a place in the R16.

Dortmund with 10 points in five matches are at top of the charts while PSG are second with seven points. Both Newcastle and AC Milan are separated by goal difference and have five points each.

Newcastle’s encounter against AC Milan at St. James’ Park is a must-win and a failure will see them wave goodbye to the competition. Even a draw will see elimination for Newcastle along with AC Milan as they will both fail to leapfrog PSG on seven points. A win for Newcastle and a draw or a defeat for PSG will be the only equation that could see the Magpies reach the knockouts.

<h2>Porto, Shakhtar fight for second spot</h2>

Tied on nine points each Porto will advance to the R16 with a draw as they will attain a better head-to-head record with Shakhtar. However, any team emerging winner will advance to the next stage of the competition. Interestingly, if Barcelona lose by one-goal margin and Shakhtar win by six-goal margin they could win the group and condemn the five-time champions to second place. Atletico Madrid and Lazio will also go head-to-head with the winner of the contest winning the group.

Champions League: Newcastle United seek helping hand against Milan for R16 berth as PSG sit in pole position

Eddie Howe has defended Newcastle's position after a move by Premier League clubs to impose a temporary ban on loans between associated clubs failed to attract sufficient support. Eight of the 20 top-flight sides are understood to have opposed the move at a meeting on Tuesday, with 14 votes required for a vote to carry.

Saudi-owned Newcastle have been linked with a move in the January transfer window for former Wolves captain Ruben Neves from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. Newcastle are 80 per cent owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which also has controlling stakes in four Saudi clubs including Al-Hilal.

Neves, 26, could help boost Howe's midfield options in the absence of Italy international Sandro Tonali, who is serving a 10-month ban for breaching betting rules. Howe said Newcastle, seventh in the Premier League ahead of their home match against Chelsea on Saturday, were relaxed about the outcome of the vote.

"Newcastle as a club had a view. We voted our way in the way that we're allowed to and the vote came out on the side that it did," Howe said.

"Just from my dealings with it, we're very relaxed on it. It's not the be all and end all for us. We've got a squad that we really like. If we can get players fit before January the need to recruit will become much less intense for us."

Newcastle United's Eddie Howe insists against introducing temporary ban on loans between associated clubs

Newcastle shrugged off an injury crisis to beat Manchester United 1-0 on Saturday thanks to Anthony Gordon's second-half winner.

Victory takes Eddie Howe's men above United into fifth in the Premier League table and was the very least the home side deserved for a dominant display that should have been rewarded with more goals.

Gordon's solitary strike proved enough as he slotted in Kieran Trippier's cross in 55th minute.

But the three points came at a cost for Newcastle as goalkeeper Nick Pope hobbled off late on to add to their injury woes.

The Magpies were without 11 first-team players, yet were utterly dominant for the first hour against a United side that are yet to register a win against a side in the top nine of the Premier League table this season.

"We are well aware of our situation but the players have responded again," said Howe.

"I couldn't be happier with the players tonight, I thought we gave a really good display. The character and effort levels have been of the highest level."

Andre Onana was in the spotlight after his two glaring errors cost Erik ten Hag's men in a 3-3 draw at Galatasaray in midweek that could prove fatal to their chances of progression in the Champions League.

But the Cameroonian made an important early save to deny Miguel Almiron finding the far corner.

Newcastle also suffered Champions League disappointment in midweek as a controversial stoppage-time penalty denied them a famous victory at Paris Saint-Germain.

Howe's lack of options meant he was forced to name the same side for a third consecutive game with 17-year-old Lewis Miley starting in midfield.

But there was no sign of fatigue from the home side as United could not cope with Newcastle's energy on and off the ball.

"It definitely makes the result more satisfying that we pulled through with the same team," said Gordon.

"It's not just the lads that are injured, the ones that are playing have kicks and bruises...I'm limping . It's so satisfying because we know how hard we work for each other, so to get the win today is massive."

Alexander Isak's effort was deflected inches wide by Harry Maguire before Trippier's free-kick came back off the underside of the bar as Newcastle were unfortunate not to make their dominance count before half-time.

However, the deadlock was finally broken when Trippier was played in down the right and he picked out Gordon to tap home his sixth goal of the season at the far post.

Ten Hag finally responded only after falling behind as the ineffectual Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial were replaced by Rasmus Hojlund and Antony.

Yet those changes elicited little response from the visitors as United slumped to a sixth Premier League defeat of the season.

"All over you have to say Newcastle deserved to win," conceded Ten Hag.

"We will talk tomorrow with the team about it and move on to Wednesday (against Chelsea)."

The closest United came to levelling was when Fabian Schar blocked Sergio Reguilon's goalbound volley.

But that incident came with a cost for Newcastle as goalkeeper Pope jolted his shoulder in an attempt to save the Spaniard's shot.

United finally showed some urgency for the closing stages plus nine minutes of added time for Pope's injury and did have the ball in the net.

However, Maguire was clearly offside as he deflected in Antony's effort and Newcastle held on to close to within two points of the top four.

Premier League: Injury-laden Newcastle good enough for win over Manchester United

Eddie Howe insists Sandro Tonali has a future at Newcastle as the Italian midfielder awaits the outcome of an investigation into alleged breaches of betting rules. The 23-year-old, a £55 million ($67 million) signing from AC Milan in July, is at the centre of a probe in Italy and could face a lengthy ban.

Newcastle earlier this week issued a statement confirming Tonali was subject to investigation by the Italian prosecutor's office and Italian Football Federation in relation to "illegal betting activity".

"Sandro is fully engaging with the investigation and will continue to cooperate with all relevant authorities," it said.

Howe was asked on Friday whether the midfielder had and wanted a future at St James' Park. "That's not even been discussed because that's a 'yes' on both sides," he said.

"We will support him and back him and we see him being part of our team for many years, and I know that's the same back from his side to us. There are some things I feel you don't have to say. We are committed to him long-term."

Tonali left the Italy camp last week after reports of the investigation emerged but Howe said he was available to face Crystal Palace on Saturday. "He's had a very difficult couple of weeks," he said. "He's been dealing with a lot and from what I can see he's handling himself and his emotions strongly."

"Underneath that I'm sure there is lots going on. I'll have to make a call but I have to bring it back to football and try to make the best decision for the team." Howe said it was vital to support his player.

"It's very easy to forget how young he is," said the Newcastle boss. "He's had changes in his life -- coming from Italy to England. That is hard enough to deal with and now he has this situation."

"As a football club, straight away we will throw our arms around him, protect him, try to give him the love and support he needs to find solutions to problems he's had."

Howe added: "Footballers are human beings. To look at them any other way is wrong. They have, as we all have, weaknesses, vulnerabilities, things that happen can be difficult.&nbsp; The main thing is to try and identify it as we always do and try to help them get to the best level on football pitch."

Aston Villa's Nicolo Zaniolo was also sent home from Italy's training camp after he was notified he was under investigation for alleged gambling offences. Villa issued a statement on Friday confirming the 24-year-old midfielder was assisting Italian authorities and had met with senior officials at the club.

The statement added: "Zaniolo is training as normal with the first-team squad and available for selection ahead of this weekend's match with West Ham United."

On Tuesday, Juventus and Italy midfielder Nicolo Fagioli was handed a seven-month ban for breaching betting rules.

Football: Sandro Tonali may have future at Newcastle United even after breaching betting rules

Arsenal are back on top of the Premier League with ambitions to stay there as they host Wolves this weekend while champions Manchester City play faltering Tottenham. Newcastle take on Manchester United in a clash of two teams with high ambitions of their own while Chelsea face Brighton, still searching for consistency.

Here's&nbsp;three talking points ahead of the action, as per AFP Sport.

<h2>Can Arsenal mix style with substance?</h2>

Arsenal's last-gasp 1-0 win at Brentford last week, which took them back to the top of table, was their fifth Premier League victory by a single goal this season. The Gunners lack the fluidity they showed in the 2022/23 campaign and attacking numbers are down but former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes they are now better equipped to win the league.

"Perfect, pretty football is unlikely to win the league unless it's combined with a doggedness and resilience," he said on X, formerly known as Twitter.&nbsp;"Arsenal are better this year in these areas and the football will come in due course."

But former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, a Sky Sports pundit alongside Neville, believes Mikel Arteta's team need to win games more convincingly. "If Arsenal continue how they are, if this is the Arsenal we're going to see this season, I don't think they can win the league," he told Sky.

He added: "So many games are going to the wire and sometimes that can go against you.... Those games that finish 1-0 can easily go 1-0 the other way." Arsenal smashed Lens 6-0 in the Champions League in midweek in a reminder of what can happen when everything clicks.

<h2>Tottenham face daunting Man City trip</h2>

Early pacesetters Tottenham desperately need to arrest their slide after three straight defeats but champions Manchester City are their next port of call. Ange Postecoglou's team, unbeaten in their first 10 games, have developed the costly habit of letting leads slip -- losing to Chelsea, Wolves and Aston Villa despite scoring first each time.

Postecoglou is grappling with a lengthy list of absentees and suffered another blow with the loss of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur, expected to be out until February after suffering a serious ankle injury against Villa.

City last week showed a chink in their armour, failing to win at home in any competition for the first time this year when they were held 1-1 by Liverpool.

But Erling Haaland notched his 50th Premier League goal in just his 48th game at the Etihad -- obliterating Andy Cole's record -- and this week became the quickest player to 40 Champions League goals with his strike against RB Leipzig.

City will be confident normal order can be resumed at home.

<h2>Newcastle bank on home form against Man Utd</h2>

Newcastle v Manchester United pits a team with one of the best home records against a side who have been picking up wins on the road. Despite a long injury list, Newcastle have won six of their seven Premier League games at their St James' Park stronghold this season.

Erik ten Hag's Manchester United, despite their patchy form overall, have four victories out of six games away from home. Both teams have ambitions of qualifying for season's Champions League and they each face a battle to qualify for the knockout phase of this year's competition after midweek draws.

Newcastle, who recently hammered Manchester United 3-0 in the League Cup, will fancy their chances against a team who, while they have started to score more freely, remain vulnerable at the back.

United have conceded 33 goals in all competitions this season, the most in their opening 20 matches of any campaign since 1962/63.

Here's three talking points ahead of the action, as per AFP Sport. Can Arsenal mix style with substance? Arsenal's last-gasp 1-0 win at Brentford last week, which took them back to the top of table, was their fifth Premier League victory by a single goal this season. The Gunners lack the fluidity they showed in the 2022/23 campaign and attacking numbers are down but former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes they are now better equipped to win the league. "Perfect, pretty football is unlikely to win the league unless it's combined with a doggedness and resilience," he said on X, formerly known as Twitter. "Arsenal are better this year in these areas and the football will come in due course." But former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, a Sky Sports pundit alongside Neville, believes Mikel Arteta's team need to win games more convincingly. Tottenham face daunting Man City trip Early pacesetters Tottenham desperately need to arrest their slide after three straight defeats but champions Manchester City are their next port of call. Football: Man United's Carlos Casimiro will miss trip to Fulham due to injury, says Erik Ten Hag

The Champions League group stage has reached the business end as teams are scrambling for a spot in the knockout stage. Tuesday and Wednesday proved to be crucial for teams across Europe as giants like Manchester City and Real Madrid punched their tickets to the knockout stage. However, teams like Manchester United and Newcastle United are struggling to reach the knockouts with just one match to go in the Champions League Round of 16.

<h2>How can Manchester United reach R16?</h2>

Currently bottom of the four-team group standings, United need a miracle of sorts to reach the R16 with them on four points from five matches. Bayern Munich are top of the table with 13 points in five matches and have already won Group A. Copenhagen and Galatasaray are second and third respectively with five points each. Interestingly, both Copenhagen and Galatasaray meet on the final Matchday while United host Harry Kane-inspired Bayern Munich at Old Trafford in two weeks.

United’s only equation of reaching the R16 is simple, they must beat Bayern Munich at Old Trafford on Tuesday (Dec 12). However, they will need a helping hand from both Copenhagen and Galatasaray with their head-to-head clash should result in a draw. However, any other set of results in the two matches will see United get eliminated. If both the matches end in a draw and United fail to win on final matchday it will be curtains in Europe altogether for Erik ten Hag’s side.

<h2>What Newcastle need to do to reach R16?</h2>

Newcastle United would have needed a win on the final day against AC Milan to reach the Champions League R16, only for their fate to be hanged in balance after a controversial draw against Paris Saint-Germain. The 1-1 draw for Newcastle means they are third in the Group F standings with five points. Borussia Dortmund have already qualified for the knockouts, meaning three teams will scramble for a place in the R16.

Dortmund with 10 points in five matches are top of the charts while PSG are second with seven points. Both Newcastle and AC Milan are separated by goal difference and have five points each.

Newcastle’s encounter against AC Milan at St. James’ Park is a must-win and failing to win will see them wave goodbye to the competition. Even a draw will see elimination for Newcastle along with AC Milan as they will both fail to leapfrog PSG on seven points. A win for Newcastle and a draw or a defeat for PSG will be the only equation that could see the Magpies reach the knockouts.&nbsp;

Supporters of Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain clashed in the streets of Paris ahead of the hotly-anticipated UEFA Champions League (UCL) match at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night (Nov 28).

Supporters of Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain clashed in the streets of Paris ahead of the hotly-anticipated UEFA Champions League (UCL) match at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday night (Nov 28). The Newcastle supporters are in the French capital for their fifth European game of the season. However, prior to the match, videos going viral on social media showed the Magpies being targeted by PSG Ultra groups. The Newcastle supporters gathered for pre-match drinks at the local bars and restaurants were targeted by the PSG faithful. One of the videos showed flares and chairs being thrown while shattered window glasses could be seen lying on the floor. After the violence, Newcastle fans have been encouraged to stick together and not loiter around the city aimlessly without other fans. A group of Newcastle fans moved on to Café Seguin to continue the night. A group of around 30 PSG fans turned up, stood outside, threw a flare and chairs etc at the windows and doors," a spokesperson of Newcastle United Supporters’ Club (NUSC) was quoted as saying by Guardian. Notably, the incident comes on the back of 58-year-old Newcastle fan Eddie McKay being stabbed twice in the arm and once in the back after he travelled to San Siro in Italy for the match against AC Milan. It was Newcastle's first away game in the UCL after more than two decades. Newcastle vs PSG The Geordies arrive in Paris, desperate to seek a point after finding themselves at the bottom of Group F. Two consecutive defeats against Borussia Dortmund mean that Eddie Howe's men need to salvage at least a point to keep their hopes alive of making it out of the group. As for PSG, the team is currently in the second spot with six points and will be eager to avenge the loss suffered at St James' Park earlier in the campaign. Kylian Mbappe-led PSG were pumped 4-1 by Newcastle with goals from Fabian Schar, Dan Burn Sean Longstaff and Miguel Almiron shocking the Parisians. Arsenal have blasted the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) and backed manager Mikel Arteta on Sunday (Nov 5) after their 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United in the Premier League. The contest played at St. James’ Park saw referee Stuart Atwell award a controversial goal which sparked anger for the Gunners manager. The goal would later condemn Arsenal to their first defeat of the Premier League campaign, leaving Tottenham Hotspur as the only side unbeaten in the league.

<h2>What was the incident?</h2>

In the 64th minute of the match between the two teams, Newcastle were awarded the only goal by the match officials. The Video Assistant Referee (VAR)&nbsp;had a lengthy look at the incident for three main reasons - whether the ball went out of play, a potential foul by Joelinton in the build-up, and an offside on Anthony Gordon. However, upon several checks, the on-field referee and the VAR agreed to award the goal, leaving Arteta furious in the post-match interview.

To support the manager the club released a statement, backing him with full velocity and questioning the standards of refereeing in the league.

"Arsenal Football Club wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta's post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening," the statement read.

"We'd also like to acknowledge the huge effort and performance from our players and travelling supporters at St James' Park.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches, and supporters, all of whom deserve better. PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on the action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations, and apologies.&nbsp;

"We support the ongoing efforts of chief refereeing officer, Howard Webb and would welcome working together to achieve the world-class officiating standards our league demands,” the statement further added.

The match also had other controversial decisions that could have seen both sides reduced to 10 men. Kai Havertz was fortunate to have avoided a red card for a reckless lunge at Sean Longstaff before Bruno Guimaraes could have been given his marching orders for an off-the-ball forearm on Jorginho.

Premier League: Arsenal blast PGMOL for referee controversy in Newcastle game

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was incensed after his side suffered a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle at St. James' Park on Saturday (Nov 5) evening. Arteta labelled the defeat a 'disgrace' after Anthony Gordon's tap-in goal stood despite the Video Assistant&nbsp;Referee (VAR) checking the goal for three possible fouls.&nbsp;

Speaking after the match, Arteta did not hold back and called out VAR and the officials associated with it for not chalking off the goal. Gordon's goal meant that Arsenal suffered their first defeat in the Premier League this season.&nbsp;

“Embarrassing, it’s an absolute disgrace, that’s what it is: a disgrace," said Arteta, before adding:&nbsp;“There’s so much at stake, we’ve put in so many hours to compete at the highest level and you cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve had saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing."

“It’s not acceptable, there’s too much at stake. I don’t want to be in the hands of these people. I don’t know how to feel. I’m wasting my time, we are wasting our time."

With the match evenly poised after a competitive first half, Newcastle drew the first blood in the 64th minute when a cross from near the byline found its way in the six-yard box inside the Arsenal's goal. While Joelinton jumped over Gabriel, the ball ricocheted near Gordon who reacted first and tapped the ball home to gain the victory.&nbsp;

However, during the VAR check, the referees looked at the possibility of the ball having gout of play, Joelinton fouling Gabriel and Gordon being offside after goalkeeper David Raya came off his line.&nbsp;

<h2>Arteta left fuming</h2>

After a good four-minute delay, VAR concluded it didn't have conclusive proof to overturn the on-field call. The decision left Arteta fuming as none of the three fouls went his team's way.&nbsp;

"I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week."

With the loss. Arsenal have slipped to third on the points table and could tumble to fourth by the end of the match week if Liverpool manage to beat Luton Town, later on Sunday. VAR, however, has once again become the centre of controversy. In September, Liverpool's Luiz Diaz scored a clear onside goal against Tottenham Hotspur but the goal was not given after the VAR officials made a massive blunder.&nbsp;

Gordon's goal meant that Arsenal suffered their first defeat in the Premier League this season. “Embarrassing, it’s an absolute disgrace, that’s what it is: a disgrace," said Arteta, before adding: “There’s so much at stake, we’ve put in so many hours to compete at the highest level and you cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve had saying this cannot continue. It’s embarrassing." “It’s not acceptable, there’s too much at stake. I don’t want to be in the hands of these people. I don’t know how to feel. I’m wasting my time, we are wasting our time." With the match evenly poised after a competitive first half, Newcastle drew the first blood in the 64th minute when a cross from near the byline found its way in the six-yard box inside the Arsenal's goal. While Joelinton jumped over Gabriel, the ball ricocheted near Gordon who reacted first and tapped the ball home to gain the victory. However, during the VAR check, the referees looked at the possibility of the ball having gout of play, Joelinton fouling Gabriel and Gordon being offside after goalkeeper David Raya came off his line. Also read | Premier League: Liverpool blast PGMOL over 'unfair' VAR call, release strong statement after Spurs defeat Arteta left fuming After a good four-minute delay, VAR concluded it didn't have conclusive proof to overturn the on-field call. The decision left Arteta fuming as none of the three fouls went his team's way. "I've been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It's a disgrace and there's too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week." With the loss. Arsenal have slipped to third on the points table and could tumble to fourth by the end of the match week if Liverpool manage to beat Luton Town, later on Sunday. VAR, however, has once again become the centre of controversy. In September, Liverpool's Luiz Diaz scored a clear onside goal against Tottenham Hotspur but the goal was not given after the VAR officials made a massive blunder. (With inputs from agencies)

<h2>Tonali faces 10 months out</h2>

FIGC (Italian FA) President Gabriele Gravina said Tonali will be suspended for 18 months but eight of those months are commutable by attending treatment for gambling addiction and making at least 16 public appearances at centres for young soccer players and associations for recovering addicts.

This will come as a huge blow to Newcastle United, having secured the signing of Tonali on a $70-million deal from AC Milan. He was involved over the weekend in the Premier League game against Crystal Palace and played 20 minutes. He also came on as a substitute in the Champions League encounter against Borussia Dortmund where his side lost 1-0.

"We will throw our arms around Sandro and protect him and try to give him the love and support he needs to find solutions to the problems he's had," Newcastle manager Eddie Howe said last Friday.

"We see him being part of our team for many years. We are committed to him long term."

The 10-month ban further includes eight months of commutable attending treatment for gambling. This would mean, the Italian international could return to action in time for the start of the 2024-25 season.

<h2>What is the issue?</h2>

Tonali, Newcastle’s record signing in whopping $70 million was subject to investigation in early October where he was found guilty of placing bets. During his time with AC Milan, he placed bets on his team, which could still result in a match-fixing investigation for the players. The gambling bets were termed illegal and were under the radar of Italian authorities.

The 23-year-old has been assisting in the investigation which could serve as a relief to the player in long-term. However, the 10-month ban could see his short-term future in jeopardy as he will miss the rest of the Premier League season with Newcastle and will also sit on the sidelines during the Euro 2024 if Italy eventually make it to the showpiece event. However, had the midfielder not cooperated in the investigation, he could have faced a ban of three years.

Since the ban is yet to be imposed, Tonali is available for selection for the upcoming matches of Newcastle United. He has been training with the side ahead of their Champions League contest against German giants Borussia Dortmund. He played in the final 20 minutes in Newcastle’s 4-0 win against Crystal Palace and is likely to participate in the Champions League match.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, manager Eddie Howe said: "Sandro is fit and fine. Obviously, there's things going on, but it's the same as he was before the Crystal Palace match."

When pressed on Tonali's availability, Howe added: "As far as I'm aware, I'm expecting him to be available for tomorrow."

Football: Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali likely to get 10-month ban in gambling probe - Reports

Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali could face a long&nbsp;ban from football after admitting to betting-related offenses on Wednesday (Oct 18). The case comes from his time with AC Milan where admitted to multiple betting breaches while playing for the club. The Newcastle star was interrogated by the Turin prosecutor's office for almost three hours on Wednesday while he admitted to the offenses. He along with fellow Premier League star Nicolò Zaniolo were dropped from the recent Italian squad after being on the radar&nbsp;of the authorities.

<h2>Tonali admits offences</h2>

According to the Italian publication La Gazzetta dello Sport, Tonali admitted to the offence of also placing bets on his own team. This has complicated matters for the Newcastle player who was the club’s record acquisition in the summer. Italian betting rules are strict in case a player is found guilty of placing such deals on his own team. This could result in Tonali facing a longer ban than three years while the club could be on the receiving end of things.

In case Tonali is found guilty of betting on matches in which he has participated, he could be sanctioned under the match-fixing rules. However, the 23-year-old has claimed he did not place bets on Milan matches where he was playing. The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is deeply looking into the matter as the star player faces an uncertain future.

On the player side, his agent has claimed that he suffers from a gambling addiction that could result in mandatory therapy sessions instead of a ban. Currently, Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli has been sanctioned for similar offences having been found guilty. Fagioli was sentenced to a seven-month ban plus a fine and therapy on Tuesday.

The FIGC is also looking into matters surrounding the illegal betting platforms which could result in Tonali facing more sanctions. As things stand, he will be available for this week’s Premier League fixture against Crystal Palace for Newcastle. However, if the investigation moves at a rapid pace, he could be sanctioned sooner rather than later.

Newcastle United record-signing Sandro Tonali admits to betting charges, likely to face three-year ban

Newcastle United claimed a stunning 4-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in their first&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;match at St James' Park in 20 years, while holders Manchester City scored two late goals to get the better of RB Leipzig.

Elsewhere in Europe's elite club competition there was a victory for Barcelona in Xavi Hernandez's 100th game as coach and an agonising last-gasp defeat for Celtic against Lazio.

But Newcastle stole the show on a night to remember for their fans on Tyneside as Miguel Almiron, Dan Burn, Sean Longstaff and Fabian Schaer all scored to inflict on the French club their heaviest&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;group-stage loss since the Qatari takeover of 2011.

Almiron gave Saudi-owned Newcastle a 17th-minute lead following an error by PSG captain Marquinhos, and a Burn header that crossed the line before Gianluigi Donnarumma could swat it away was given after a VAR check for a possible offside six minutes prior to the break.

With Kylian Mbappe unable to make an impact, Longstaff pounced on passive defending to make it 3-0 early in the second half.

Lucas Hernandez pulled one back but a classy strike by Schaer rounded off a fine night for Newcastle at the death.

"PSG are such a good team, we had to defend really well and our spirit was brilliant," Newcastle manager Eddie Howe told broadcaster TNT Sports.

Newcastle go top of Group F and PSG are second after rivals Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan played out a 0-0 draw in Germany.

<h2>Alvarez strike sinks Leipzig</h2>

Reigning&nbsp;champions&nbsp;City are well on course to qualify for the knockout stages after successfully negotiating their hardest test in Group G to beat Leipzig 3-1 away.

Phil Foden finished off a fine move to put City ahead midway through the first half, only for Lois Openda to equalise just after the interval.

Foden then hit the bar from a free-kick and it looked like Pep Guardiola's side might have to settle for a point until substitute Julian Alvarez found the top corner with a superb strike on 84 minutes.

Alvarez then turned provider for Jeremy Doku to make it 3-1 in stoppage time as City made it two wins out of two in the competition this season.

"We played a fantastic game in all departments. Everyone was perfect," Guardiola told TNT Sports.

Red Star Belgrade and Young Boys got off the mark in the same group with a 2-2 draw in Serbia, where Osman Bukari grabbed an 88th-minute equaliser for the home team.

Cherif Ndiaye had given Red Star the lead but Young Boys -- who face City next -- drew level through Filip Ugrinic and then went ahead courtesy of a Cedric Itten penalty.

<h2>Barcelona beat Porto</h2>

Barcelona celebrated a landmark night for Xavi with a 1-0 victory away to Porto in Portugal in what was on paper their toughest assignment in Group H.

Ferran Torres scored the only goal as Lamine Yamal became the youngest ever starter in a&nbsp;Champions&nbsp;League&nbsp;match at the age of 16 years and 83 days.

"We had been talking about it, this match was worth half of the qualification," Torres told broadcaster Movistar.

Barcelona ended the game with 10 men after Gavi was sent off late on.

Earlier, Shakhtar Donetsk got a first win in the same group with a remarkable comeback from two goals down to beat Royal Antwerp 3-2 in Belgium.

Arbnor Muja and Michel-Ange Balikwisha had Antwerp 2-0 up at the break, but a brace by Danylo Sikan either side of a Yaroslav Rakitskyy goal turned the game on its head.

Antwerp still could have earned a draw but Toby Alderweireld missed a penalty deep in stoppage time.

Celtic suffered a second straight defeat in Group E after Pedro Rodriguez's 95th-minute strike gave Lazio a 2-1 victory in Glasgow.

Kyogo Furuhashi had put Celtic in front but Matias Vecino equalised, paving the way for the dramatic finale.

Atletico Madrid beat Feyenoord 3-2 in the same group, with Alvaro Morata scoring twice and Antoine Griezmann also on target.

The Dutch&nbsp;champions&nbsp;had led twice, first through a Mario Hermoso own goal and then through David Hancko, but Atletico hit back each time.

Barcelona beat Porto Barcelona celebrated a landmark night for Xavi with a 1-0 victory away to Porto in Portugal in what was on paper their toughest assignment in Group H. Ferran Torres scored the only goal as Lamine Yamal became the youngest ever starter in a Champions League match at the age of 16 years and 83 days. The Dutch champions had led twice, first through a Mario Hermoso own goal and then through David Hancko, but Atletico hit back each time. Police launch investigation after Newcastle United captain Jamaal Lascelles ‘attacked’ by gang of thugs

Premier League champions Manchester City racked up a club-record 17th successive home win in all competitions with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday. A superb strike from Julian Alvarez sealed the points for Pep Guardiola's side, but the relief they showed at the final whistle said a lot about a strong Newcastle display.

City's win lifted them to six points from two games alongside Brighton and Hove Albion who earlier in the day thumped Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-1 away.

Manchester United were unable to join City and Brighton at the top of the fledgling table though as they went down to a 2-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur in what was Ange Postecoglou's first home game in charge of the London club.

Liverpool came from a goal down to beat Bournemouth 3-1 although ended the game with 10 men after Alexis Mac Allister was shown a red card on his home debut.

Brentford are now unbeaten in 11 successive London derbies after they cruised to a 3-0 win at Fulham who also finished with 10 men after Tim Ream was sent off after conceding a penalty.

Manchester City made light of the absence of Kevin de Bruyne, who had surgery this week after damaging a hamstring in the 3-0 opening win over Burnley. In their first home game since clinching the treble last season, City's stunning feat was honoured in grand fashion before kickoff at The Etihad Stadium.

City will be contending for multiple trophies again this season, but Newcastle showed why Guardiola has tipped them to be amongst the contenders for their Premier League crown. That said, City were comfortably the better side in the opening half in which Alvarez broke the deadlock with a powerful strike in the 31st minute after being picked out by Phil Foden.

Newcastle grew in belief after the break but they discovered that for all City's attacking attributes, they also possess one of the tightest rearguards in Europe and Eddie Howe's side could find no way through to goal.

"There was a moment around 60-70 minutes in and I thought we could get control but they are a very good team and played through the press a few times," Howe said. "They strangle you with the ball to a degree. You tire yourself out getting it back and with fatigue the decision making goes slightly."

Tottenham continued to banish the clouds of gloom that had preceded the new campaign as they proved there is life after Harry Kane with a vibrant display against a sloppy United.

Pape Matar Sarr's maiden Premier League goal, struck high into the net from a deflected cross just after halftime, and a late own goal by Lisandro Martinez sealed the victory which gave Tottenham four points from two games.

"We want to entertain for sure but in terms of being successful," Postecoglou said. "The atmosphere was incredible today. The energy the fans created was amazing."

Brighton's impressive start to the season continued and they are leading Man City on goal difference after crushing Wolves with three goals arriving in a devastating nine-minute spell in the second half against pointless Wolves.

Kaoru Mitoma opened the scoring for Brighton in the 15th minute with a sensational solo goal and he turned provider in the first minute of the second half to set up Pervis Estupinan.

Solly March then scored twice in four minutes, with Julio Enciso assisting him on both occasions.

Liverpool beat Bournemouth 9-0 a year ago but they found the south coast club a tougher nut to crack this time.

They went behind to an Antoine Semenyo goal but replied with goals from Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah and Diogo Jota.

The gloss was taken off though as Mac Allister was sent off for a high tackle.

"Horrible start to the game," Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp said. "We needed a few minutes to shake it off and then we were really good."

Bryan Mbeumo scored twice and Yoane Wissa was also on target as Brentford got the better of Fulham at Craven Cottage.

Fulham lost Ream when he conceded the penalty in the 63rd minute that allowed Brentford to go 2-0 up. "The game was finished from that moment," Fulham boss Marco Silva said.

West Ham United face Chelsea on Sunday with Aston Villa at home to Everton -- all four sides seeking a first win.

Newcastle United release 8 players ahead of next season

Manchester United and Newcastle are on the brink of qualifying for next season's Champions League after Liverpool's 1-1 draw against Aston Villa, while Everton remain in relegation danger despite their dramatic 1-1 draw at Wolves on Saturday. United's 1-0 victory at Bournemouth, combined with Liverpool's failure to beat Villa, left Erik ten Hag's men and Newcastle within touching distance of ensuring Premier League top four finishes.

<h2>Man Utd, Newcastle on top four brink</h2>

Fourth-placed United and Newcastle, in third, are both three points clear of fifth-placed Liverpool, who have only one game left. Newcastle can seal their spot with a draw or win against Leicester on Monday or Chelsea on May 28. United take their turn at securing the lucrative top four place against Chelsea on Thursday and Fulham next weekend.

Liverpool's final game of the season is against relegated Southampton, but although they have a superior goal difference to United if they finish level on points, they are likely to have to settle for a place in the Europa League. At the Vitality Stadium, United took the lead in the ninth minute when Casemiro spun to meet Christian Eriksen's cross with an acrobatic bicycle kick from close-range.

United were unbeaten in their previous 134 league matches when leading at half-time and that remarkable sequence continued as they held firm after the interval. At Anfield, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was watching from the stands as he served a touchline ban following his recent rant about referee Paul Tierney. Villa wasted a 22nd-minute penalty when Ollie Watkins fired wide after the striker was brought down by Ibrahima Konate. Despite Watkins' miss, Unai Emery's team went ahead in the 27th minute through Jacob Ramsey's volley from Douglas Luiz's cross.

Roberto Firmino and James Milner, set to leave Liverpool at the end of the season, came on for their Anfield farewells in the closing stages. And it was Brazilian forward Firmino who rescued a point with his close-range finish in stoppage-time.

<h2>Everton drama</h2>

Yerry Mina's last-gasp equaliser boosted Everton's hopes of avoiding playing in the second tier for the first time since 1954.

Sean Dyche's men fell behind after 34 minutes when Adama Traore's shot was pushed out to Hwang Hee-chan, who netted from close-range.

Mina bundled in Everton's leveller nine minutes into stoppage-time to leave the fourth bottom Toffees two points above the relegation zone.

Third bottom Leeds would go above Everton with a win at West Ham on Sunday, while second bottom Leicester would also leapfrog Dyche's team if they beat Newcastle on Monday.

Premier League: Man Utd, Newcastle on brink of sealing top four places after Liverpool draw

Arsenal showed no sign of raising the white flag in the Premier League title race with a 2-0 victory at Newcastle United on Sunday to close the gap on leaders Manchester City to one point. Defeat would have left Arsenal's hopes of a first title since 2004 hanging by a thread but Martin Odegaard's brilliant strike and a Fabian Schar own goal sealed a vital victory.

Newcastle, bidding to cement third place and take a big step towards a top-four finish, dominated early on but Odegaard's sweet strike after 14 minutes gave the visitors the lead. Schar then inadvertently turned in Gabriel Martinelli's cross with 20 minutes remaining.

City, who have won 10 straight games to catch and then overhaul Arsenal, have 82 points from 34 games with the Gunners on 81 having played a game more.

Newcastle stay third on 65 but Manchester United could overtake them later on Sunday if they win at West Ham United.

If ever there was a test of the resolve of Mikel Arteta's Arsenal team it was a trip to St James's Park to face a Newcastle side on a roll in their quest to return to the Champions League after an absence of two decades.

They were fortunate to survive an early onslaught with Newcastle's Jacob Murphy thumping a second-minute shot against the foot of the post and Alexander Isak forcing Aaron Ramsdale into an early save.

Newcastle were then awarded a penalty after Bruno Guimaraes was blocked by Jakub Kiwior and referee Chris Kavanagh pointed to the spot for apparent handball, but after a VAR check the decision was overturned to the relief of the visitors.

Arsenal then took the lead with their first shot as Odegaard was allowed too much time and sent a skidding effort inside the post from outside the penalty area.

The visitors were devastatingly effective on the counter-attack and Odegaard was at the heart of all their best work, releasing Martinelli who forced Nick Pope into a smart save.

Pope came to Newcastle's rescue again in stoppage time at the end of a frenetic first half, keeping out Odegaard's shot.

The second half began in almost identical fashion to the first with Murphy's cross being headed against the post by Isak and Ramsdale somehow keeping out Schar's close-range header.

Martinelli then curled a shot against the crossbar and in the 71st minute carried the ball down the left before accelerating to the byline and fizzing in a low cross that deflected off the unfortunate Schar into the net.

PL: Arsenal overcome Newcastle challenge with a 2-0 win, stay alive in title race

Tottenham fought back from two goals down to hold Manchester United to a 2-2 draw on Thursday as Newcastle closed in on Champions League football with a 4-1 thrashing of Everton. Spurs were smashed 6-1 by Newcastle on Sunday to bring Cristian Stellini's four-game reign as interim manager to an end.

Things threatened to go from bad to worse in caretaker Ryan Mason's first match in charge as United stormed into a 2-0 lead by half-time. Jadon Sancho smashed home the opener after just seven minutes before Marcus Rashford turned on the afterburners to race past Eric Dier and fire in his 29th goal of the season.

"I don't think we were that good across the 90 minutes," admitted United boss Erik ten Hag. "After half-time we had to score another goal."

United fans taunted the home support with chants of "Harry Kane, we'll see you in June" amid interest from the Red Devils in Spurs' all-time top goal scorer.

But Tottenham finally showed some fight to boost their chances of qualifying for Europe next season. Pedro Porro reduced the arrears with a thumping strike before Kane crossed for Son Heung-min to level 11 minutes from time.

"I thought in the second half we were outstanding and the character we showed after last Sunday and going two goals down," said Mason. "I hope the fans can see that we were a team today and we ran for each other. In the second half we could have scored a lot more."

A point edges Spurs back up to fifth, but they remain six points adrift of fourth-placed United, who have two games in hand.

Newcastle opened up an eight-point cushion on the chasing pack for a top-four finish and a place in the Champions League next season as Callum Wilson scored twice at Goodison Park.

Eddie Howe's men struggled to find their rhythm before the break, but led thanks to Wilson's predatory finish after Jordan Pickford parried Joelinton's drive.

Newcastle then cut loose in the final 20 minutes as Joelinton headed in, Wilson found the top corner and then a sensational run from Alexander Isak teed up Jacob Murphy.

"Second half you saw us at our very best and we were very clinical in front of goal," said Howe. "Confidence was there and that was evident in the second half. We had to earn the right to get to that point."

Dwight McNeil's corner that crept in was scant consolation for Everton, who remain rooted in the relegation zone.

Only Southampton are keeping the Toffees off the foot of the table and they are now six points adrift of safety after a 1-0 home defeat to Bournemouth.

Marcus Tavernier scored the only goal at St Mary's to take the Cherries up to 14th and seven points clear of the drop zone.

Southampton thought they had snatched a dramatic 89th-minute equaliser but Che Adams' effort was ruled out for offside following a VAR review, pushing the Saints closer to the Championship next season.

"I don't think we were good enough," said Southampton boss Ruben Selles. "Until we conceded the goal we weren't in the game."

PL Round-Up: Spurs hold Manchester United to a 2-2 draw, Newcastle close in on UCL qualification

Tottenham sacked interim manager Cristian Stellini on Monday after Chairman Daniel Levy branded Sunday's 6-1 defeat at Newcastle "wholly unacceptable". Stellini, who was only put in charge last month after his former boss Antonio Conte left the club, will be replaced by Ryan Mason with immediate effect. Conte's long-term assistant won only one of his four games in charge, dealing what appears a fatal blow to Spurs' chances of Champions League football next season.

Tottenham still sit fifth in the Premier League but are six points adrift of the top four and have played at least one game more than the sides directly above them. A difficult season hit a new low at St James' Park as Spurs were 5-0 down after just 21 minutes.

"Sunday’s performance against Newcastle was wholly unacceptable," said Levy in a club statement. "Cristian will leave his current role along with his coaching staff. Cristian stepped in at a difficult point in our season and I want to thank him for the professional manner in which he and his coaching staff have conducted themselves during such a challenging time."

However, the decision to replace Conte with a member of his backroom staff in the first place has opened Levy up to more criticism from fans.

"We can look at many reasons why it happened and whilst myself, the board, the coaches and players must all take collective responsibility, ultimately the responsibility is mine," Levy added. "I met with the player committee today - the squad is determined to pull together to ensure the strongest possible finish to the season. We are all clear we need to deliver performances which earn your amazing support."

Mason, who also took charge towards the end of the 2020/21 season, will be in the dugout for Thursday's clash at home to Manchester United.

After finishing fourth under Conte last season, hopes were high that Tottenham could go even better this campaign as the former Chelsea boss was armed with over £100 million ($124 million) of new signings.

But after just one defeat in their opening 10 league games, Spurs have lost 10 of their last 22.

An astonishing rant by Conte, pointing the finger at his players' inability to perform under pressure, ended the Italian's time in charge. But things did not improve under Stellini as Spurs blew a goal and a man advantage at relegation-threatened Everton to draw 1-1 and lost 3-2 at home to Bournemouth before their collapse at Newcastle.

Tottenham's malaise has raised questions over the future of star striker Harry Kane.

The England captain has just one year left on his contract and is attracting interest from Bayern Munich and Manchester United.

The club's managing director of football Fabio Paratici also resigned last week after losing his appeal against a 30-month global ban from performing his role.

Paratici was handed the suspension by the Italian football federation (FIGC) in January after his former club Juventus were found guilty of false accounting.

Tottenham Hotspur sack interim manager Cristian Stellini following Newcastle beatdown

Newcastle United obliterated Premier League top-four rivals Tottenham Hotspur with a five-goal salvo in the opening 21 minutes on the way to a 6-1 rout at a rocking St James' Park on Sunday. A game billed as a crucial six-pointer in the race to secure Champions League qualification was effectively all over before the clock had reached 10 minutes as fifth-placed Tottenham collapsed like a pack of cards.

Jacob Murphy got the scoreboard ticking in the second minute after Hugo Lloris spilled a Joelinton shot and four minutes later Joelinton rounded Lloris to slot in his side's second goal.

Murphy then belted in Newcastle's third from long range after Tottenham conceded possession and there was a sense of disbelief in the stadium as Alexander Isak produced two clinical finishes in the space of two minutes to make it 5-0.

It was the second-earliest a team had taken a five-goal lead in Premier League history after Manchester City scored five in the opening 18 minutes against Watford in 2019.

Tottenham's fans high in the Leazes Stand had no stomach for any more humiliation with many heading for the exits and the long journey back home long before halftime.

The only question left was whether Newcastle would claim their biggest Premier League victory and whether Tottenham could avoid their heaviest top-flight defeat.

Tottenham improved after the break, although it was hard not to, with Harry Kane slotting in a consolation goal four minutes into the second half but Callum Wilson scored Newcastle's sixth one minute after coming off the bench.

It was the perfect response by Newcastle to last week's 3-0 defeat at Aston Villa and took them a big step closer to a return to the Champions League for the first time for 20 years.

Newcastle moved above Manchester United into third place with 59 points, six more than fifth-placed Tottenham who have also played a game more and whose hopes of a top-four finish now look to be all but over.
