Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has returned to training after picking up a knock before the international break but a late call will be taken on his return to action this weekend, manager Erik Ten Hag said on Friday (March 31).

Rashford missed England's European Championship qualifying wins over Italy and Ukraine after withdrawing from the squad earlier this month due to a knock he suffered during United's FA Cup quarter-final win over Fulham.

The 25-year-old is United's top scorer this season and has been in scintillating form with 30 goals for club and country.

"I have good hope, he trained but he had to do some treatment, he had to do some individual training. Today he joined in with the group," Ten Hag told reporters ahead of Sunday's trip to Newcastle United.

"We have one more day, so I have a good hope he will be available... I have seen him back this week and he has shown a lot of energy, a lot of motivation. It was a good spirit and a lot of focus."

Rashford's rise this season has seen him linked with a move to top European sides but Ten Hag said he wants to keep the club's talisman with talks ongoing over a contract extension. Rsahford's current deal ends next season.

"It's an internal process. We focus on winning games, of course also planning for the future, so in the back we're working on that," Ten Hag added.

"It's about agents, it's about football director John Murtough. Rashy and I are focusing on performing."

Ten Hag also said injured French forward Anthony Martial could make his return for the first time in two months.

United are third in the league standings with 50 points but fifth-placed Newcastle can overhaul Ten Hag's side on goal difference if they win at St James' Park.

Newcastle have the best defensive record in the Premier League this season having conceded only 19 goals in 26 games but the Dutch boss was more concerned about their time-wasting tactics.

"We know they delay, it's something that the refereeing doesn't want. They want to have tempo in the game, that is the aim of the Premier League, so they have to be consistent to let the game go," Ten Hag said.

"They've had a great season with their manager (Eddie Howe)... It's a team that is really hard to beat. We are looking forward to the challenge and the evidence is we can beat them."

Premier League: Marcus Rashford doubt for Man Utd's crunch Newcastle affair despite returning to training

Eddie Howe says further limits on spending would inhibit Newcastle's blueprint for success following a call from Liverpool owner John W Henry for tougher restrictions on clubs. Henry, initially a supporter of the collapsed European Super League, this week voiced his support for extra curbs on Premier League clubs to preserve healthy competition. But Magpies manager Howe, who has spent heavily since taking over at St James' Park in November 2021, said he would not welcome fresh limits on top of existing regulations.

<h3>Howe backs club ambitions</h3>

"I wouldn't want to see any more restrictions on spending," Howe said on Friday.

"We have spent money, don't get me wrong, but future restrictions would certainly deny our ability to improve as quickly as we want to."

Newcastle's sizeable investment since a Saudi-led takeover in 2021 has enabled them to mount a challenge to finish in the top four of the English top flight this season. They are currently sixth in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand despite a poor recent run. Howe's team also reached last month's League Cup final, which they lost to Manchester United.

Newcastle, who host Wolves on Sunday, have won just one of their past eight league games and scored only three goals in the process.

"There's a belief that we can win again and we need, very quickly, to fulfil that aim," Howe said.

"I've never sat here and talked us up in terms of targets, top four. But I have talked us up in terms of what I believe we can achieve and the quality we have in our group and I'm not going to change now."

<h3>Goals scoring issue for Newcastle</h3>

Newcastle's recent lack of goals has increased the clamour for record-signing Alexander Isak to start in place of England international Callum Wilson, who has scored only once in his past 14 appearances for the club. But Howe issued a note of caution over a player who has missed a significant chunk of the season with a thigh injury.

"He wants to play, like every player. I feel he is there, but is he 100 percent ready to play 90 minutes on a consistent basis? Probably not. I have been delighted by his attitude. I think he's in a good place."

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed the message that Sir Alex Ferguson passed on to him ahead of the big cup final on Sunday. Ten Hag said the former United manager did not need to do any talking to send a message, albeit his actions were enough. "He is by doing [instead of using words]. I think he left a legacy and that is Manchester United stands for winning and a winning culture," he told Sky Sports. The Dutch manager hoped that his side could make Ferguson happy with the performance against the Geordies. "I think he's such a great example for all of us, for humanity, but for all of us around and in Manchester United, he's such a big example and we hope that we can make him proud on Sunday." WATCH | Are the glory days back at Manchester United? × Ten Hag had dinner with Ferguson last week which generated a lot of chatter online. When quizzed about what he talked about with the legendary manager, the Dutch said: "I always enjoy speaking with people who have a lot of knowledge, a lot of experience and he wants to share it, he wants to help and support. Man United is his club and he feels so committed. We are doing well. It was a great night and I look forward to the next night with him." The last time the club won a trophy was in 2017 when Jose Mourinho managed to engineer a Europa League victory which he dubs one of the biggest achievements of his career. A club of United's stature being without any silverware for six years has agitated the entire fanbase. Thus, when Ten Hag's men step on the Wembley turf, expectations will be high. Carabao Cup: Rashford sizzles with a brace as Manchester United and Newcastle advance to semi-finals

Manchester United and an unusually goal-shy Cristiano Ronaldo were unable to find a way past Newcastle United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Sunday in a 0-0 draw that kept both teams in the top six.

Showing a passion and solidity sometimes lacking from their hosts, Eddie Howe's Newcastle had the best chance of the game with an extraordinary double header from Joelinton in the first half that came first off the crossbar then off the post.

Newcastle's Callum Wilson also had a penalty shout denied.

Feted before the game for reaching 700 club goals in his career, Ronaldo twice had the ball in the back of the net. But he was offside for the first, while the second was disallowed when he cheekily nicked the ball off Newcastle to stroke it home after claiming a free kick had been taken.

Ronaldo has only scored twice this season for Manchester United, with some pundits already declaring the twilight of his brilliant career. The result left Manchester United fifth on 16 points, with Newcastle sixth on 15 points with one more game played.

Antony was again Manchester United's brightest spark, with one close-range shot stopped by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope's shins. Despite seeing plenty of the ball, however, he was unable to wriggle past Newcastle's dogged defence or find the perfect cross for his fellow strikers.

Marcus Rashford, on as a substitute for Ronaldo, set up Fred with a late chance but the midfielder pulled his shot just wide. Rashford then missed a header in the final minute as Manchester United pressed for what would have been an undeserved winner.

Roared on non-stop by their travelling army, Newcastle had the best of the first half, frequently finding promising positions after sloppy passing by their opponents.

But without injured striker Alexander Isak, the visitors failed to apply the finishing touch their efforts deserved.

In the second half, Newcastle were forced more onto the backfoot, but in truth had little trouble holding out against the hosts.

Erik ten Hag's subdued strike force will again come under a harsh spotlight after an unimpressive mid-week Europa League performance when they missed countless chances and left it late for a 1-0 win over Omonia Nicosia.

Premier League: Newcastle United frustrate Manchester United and misfiring Ronaldo in goalless draw

Manchester City reclaimed top spot in the Premier League with a 5-0 drubbing of Newcastle United that allowed the reigning champions to open up a three-point lead over Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday.

Raheem Sterling scored twice for the hosts with Aymeric Laporte, Rodri and Phil Foden also on target as they shrugged off the bitter disappointment of their Champions League semi-final defeat by Real Madrid.

Sterling eased any early jitters with a header and Laporte`s tap-in gave City full control before the interval.

Rodri headed City`s third from a corner after the break and Foden swept in his side`s fourth before Sterling struck again in stoppage time as City took emphatic advantage of Liverpool`s 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur the previous day.

Newcastle`s Chris Wood spurned a great chance to give his side an early lead but the visitors were no match for City who took an important step towards a fourth title in five seasons.

City have 86 points to Liverpool`s 83 with both sides having three games remaining and City now have a superior goal difference. Pep Guardiola`s side need seven points from their last three games to be guaranteed the title.

Liverpool face Aston Villa on Tuesday with City up against Wolverhampton Wanderers a day later.

"The defeat to Real Madrid was so, so big but football is like this. You have to switch on the focus for the Premier League because it is even more difficult," Rodri said.

"We did brilliant today and we have to keep going. We expect nothing from Liverpool and we have to keep going. We have three finals and have to finish the season like we deserve."

City needed a response after their last-gasp heartbreak in Madrid and Newcastle proved ideal opposition in the sunshine.

Things might have got edgy if Wood had found the net with an early header from Allan Saint-Maximin`s inviting cross but he sent a tame effort straight at City goalkeeper Ederson.

City took the lead in the 19th minute when Ilkay Gundogan clipped a superb ball to the back post for Joao Cancelo to head back across goal for Sterling to nod in.

Wood had an effort ruled out for offside soon after and City moved further ahead after 38 minutes when Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka spilled the ball and Laporte converted.

Rodri lost his marker to head in Kevin De Bruyne`s corner after 61 minutes and Foden got in on the act when Oleksandr Zinchenko`s shot arrived at his feet and he diverted it in.

City saved the best to last with a flowing move allowing an unmarked Sterling to fire home.

Premier League: Manchester City trounce Newcastle United to open up three-point lead

Newcastle United`s Bruno Guimaraes grabbed a glorious stoppage-time winner with the first headed goal of his career as the hosts beat Leicester City 2-1 on Sunday to take another vital step towards preserving their Premier League status.

Guimaraes struck twice to secure the victory that moved Newcastle up to 14th place on 37 points, 12 above Burnley in 18th spot having played a game more, with Leicester now just three points ahead of the Magpies in ninth.

The Foxes went in front after 19 minutes from a cleverly-worked corner, the ball driven low into the box and pulled back for Ademola Lookman to fire goalwards, with his shot squirming under the body of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka into the net.

Guimaraes levelled for Newcastle on the half-hour mark with the first of his two goals, poking the ball over the line from between the legs of keeper Kasper Schmeichel.

The goal was initially disallowed but, after a pitch-side VAR review, referee Jarred Gillett reversed his decision and allowed it to stand.

Newcastle winger Allan Saint-Maximin thrilled and frustrated the home crowd in equal measure, his mazy dribbles occasionally laying the foundations for promising attacks but often ending with him giving the ball away cheaply.

The Frenchman started the second half with a couple of long-range shots that failed to hit the target before Leicester took over again, maintaining possession for long spells as Newcastle struggled to mount any coherent attacks.

Neither side created much of note until the dying moments, when Joe Willock broke down the left before crossing for Brazilian Guimaraes, who threw himself at the ball to head it into the net, to delight the home crowd.

The 24-year-old was yellow-carded for taking off his shirt in celebration, and after the final whistle he threw it to a young fan in the stands, a memento of an afternoon in which Newcastle looked to have finally put enough distance between themselves and the bottom sides to ensure top-flight survival.

Also read | Bhuvneshwar Kumar becomes first Indian fast bowler ever in IPL history to achieve massive feat The goal was initially disallowed but, after a pitch-side VAR review, referee Jarred Gillett reversed his decision and allowed it to stand. Newcastle United have signed New Zealand striker Chris Wood from relegation rivals Burnley on a two-and-a-half-year deal, the two Premier League clubs announced on Thursday.

The clubs did not disclose financial details of the transfer but British media reported that Newcastle paid Burnley 25 million pounds ($34.3 million) for the 30-year-old.

"This is a very exciting opportunity for me and I`m delighted to be a Newcastle United player," Wood said, who has 27 goals for New Zealand, in a club statement.

Wood had been a key player for Burnley, having scored 49 goals in 144 league matches during his four-and-a-half years at Turf Moor. He joined Burnley from Leeds United in 2017 for a then-club-record fee.

Chris Wood joins Newcastle United from relegation rivals Burnley

If Newcastle United`s grandiose plan to become one of Europe`s big hitters is to come to fruition any time soon, what happens in the next few weeks could prove pivotal. Trapped in what appears to be a four-club relegation battle after only one win in their first 19 Premier League games of the season, their prospects would ordinarily look grim.
But unlike bottom Norwich City, Burnley and Watford -- the three teams stuck in the mire with them -- Newcastle have an enormous transfer budget for the January window.

Since unpopular owner Mike Ashley`s reign was ended by a takeover by Saudi Arabia`s Public Investment Fund in October, the club`s fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of a posse of high-profile signings to ride in and save the day. Newcastle`s potential budget for new signings in January is reported to be as high as 200 million pounds ($270.86 million), keeping them in line with Financial Fair Play rules. And while in reality the outlay may not come close to that, such financial clout gives them a potentially huge advantage as they seek to maintain their top-flight status.

Identifying the right targets will be key, however, and fans will be encouraged by the seemingly imminent arrival of England full back Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid. Right back Trippier, who would cost around 12 million pounds according to British media, would represent a statement of intent from the club and help address the shortcomings in a Newcastle defence that has leaked 42 league goals so far -- a total matched only by Norwich. "I think (manager Eddie Howe) needs at least three or four (signings)," former striker Alan Shearer said last month. "Newcastle`s big issue at the minute is defensively. They`re nowhere near good enough those defenders that they`ve relied on for so long. They need a couple of defenders, someone with a bit of guile in the midfield and, also, someone to take the weight off Callum Wilson up front in terms of goals."

While Trippier`s signing would represent solid business, the dilemma Newcastle face is whether to go for short term fixes to help stave off relegation or begin the process of laying the foundations for a sustained recovery.
In an ideal world, manager Howe would prefer the latter option but will also be acutely aware that relegation could set the club`s plans back years, and could cost him his job. Tempting as the likes of Arsenal`s unsettled former skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Dele Alli might be, even on short-term loans, whether they would be best-suited for a relegation scrap is debatable.

Newcastle have also been linked to Burnley`s central defender James Tarkowski and Everton`s left back Lucas Digne as Howe looks to re-model his defence, although considering Newcastle`s new wealth, neither would be allowed to go cheaply.

While Newcastle`s current squad is clearly sub-standard, making wholesale changes is also risky. New signings need time to bed in but time is not a commodity Newcastle have in abundance. Unless results improve rapidly, they are likely to become the richest club in England`s second-tier.

England's Kieran Trippier could mark opening salvo in Newcastle United's escape bid

Covid-hit Chelsea were held to a goalless draw by Wolves on Sunday after the Premier League rejected their request to postpone the game as Manchester City put struggling Newcastle to the sword.

Just four games were left on the schedule this weekend out of the original 10 as Britain's worsening coronavirus crisis took its toll on the Premier League.

Clubs will meet on Monday to discuss what action to take, with growing questions over the integrity of the competition as the busy festive period looms.

Stumbling Chelsea, who have struggled with illness and injuries in recent weeks, were only able to name four outfield players on the bench for their match at Molineux.

The visitors, who have now won just two of their past six league games, enjoyed the bulk of possession but mustered just one shot on target and are now six points behind leaders City.

Thomas Tuchel was without Romelu Lukaku, Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who have all tested positive for Covid-19. Jorginho, Kai Havertz and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were also not in the squad.

Chelsea earlier confirmed that their request to have the game called off been turned down.

The European champions' request is understood to have been rejected because the Blues were deemed to have had enough players to fulfil the fixture according to Premier League regulations.

"We did ask to postpone the game," Tuchel confirmed before kick-off.

"We thought we had a strong case regarding the security and the health of the players.

"We have seven positive cases and every single day we've had another positive case coming in. We travelled together for three hours on the bus, we are in meetings together, we have lunch and dinners together. The situation does not feel like it will stop."

<h2>Newcastle calamity</h2>

Defending champions City crushed Newcastle 4-0 to confirm their position at the top of the table at Christmas.

Eddie Howe's side shot themselves in the foot in just the fifth minute, when calamitous defending handed City the lead after goalkeeper Martin Dubravka had carelessly conceded a corner.

The defence only half-cleared and Joao Cancelo hooked the ball back into the six-yard box. Newcastle appeared to be in little danger but Ciaran Clark inexplicably chose not to make a simple headed clearance and Ruben Dias headed the loose ball into the net.

The home side rallied and Joelinton went close to equalising with a stinging shot from distance that flew just wide of Ederson's right-hand post.

But City silenced the passionate crowd at St James's Park shortly before the half-hour, when Cancelo jinked his way past Joe Willock and Isaac Hayden before smashing a right-footed shot past the helpless Dubravka from the edge of the area.

City maintained their firm grip on the match in the second half, with Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling doubling their lead.

Pep Guardiola's City have now won eight league games in a row to move four points clear of second-placed Liverpool, who are in action at Tottenham later on Sunday.

But relegation-threated Newcastle remain three points from safety having now played two games more than Watford, who are just outside the drop zone.

The Magpies' wealthy new Saudi-backed owners have indicated they will invest significantly in the squad but before the January transfer window opens they have fixtures against Manchester United and Everton.

Premier League: Covid-hit Chelsea held by Wolves, Man City crush Newcastle United 4-0 to stay at top

The Premier League has lifted its ban on clubs striking sponsorship agreements with firms linked to their owners -- a move which will allow Newcastle United to sign deals with Saudi Arabian companies. The Premier League confirmed on Tuesday that the temporary ban, introduced in October after the sale of Newcastle United to a consortium led by Saudi Arabia`s Public Investment Fund (PIF), had been lifted.

But any `associated party` sponsorship deals will be subject to a process designed to ensure the deals reflect a "fair market value" and are not a means of distorting revenue to allow for greater spending under Financial Fair Play rules. The Premier League said that such deals will be subject to scrutiny from a special board which will take advice from an independent, external assessor. A data bank, created by the league, will also be used to create comparative assessment based on previous commercial deals.

Newcastle had been critical of the rule which they felt could limit their ability to strike deals, as their owners look to improve and develop the club and its squad. Newcastle are currently next to bottom in the Premier League but are expected to use the January transfer window to bring in new players.

The takeover of the club by the Saudi-led consortium, faced a lengthy approval process from the Premier League amid concerns that the Saudi government was, in effect, becoming a club owner. The Premier League, who came under pressure to block the deal, said it had received “legally binding” assurances that there was clear separation between PIF and the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, despite PIF being chaired by the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Huge relief! Newcastle United cleared to make Saudi deals if 'fair value'

Arsenal returned to winning ways and deepened Newcastle United`s relegation worries as goals by Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli sealed a comfortable 2-0 Premier League win on Saturday.

Bottom club Newcastle had new manager Eddie Howe on the touchline for the first time, but it made no difference as they were well beaten and remain without a league win after 13 games.

Arsenal, whose 10-match unbeaten run in all competitions came to a juddering halt at Liverpool last week, dominated the opening half with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang missing a sitter.

But their patience was rewarded as Saka finished superbly in the 56th minute before substitute Martinelli volleyed the second with his first touch.

Newcastle`s Jonjo Shelvey was denied by the woodwork in the first half but once they went behind, the 17th defeat in 18 league games against Arsenal looked inevitable.

Arsenal stayed fifth in the table, level on points with fourth-placed West Ham United while Newcastle, who have six points and are five behind 17th-placed Leeds United, are the sixth different team to fail to win any of their opening 13 Premier League games.

Of those, only Derby County in 2000-01 survived relegation. Howe, who had to watch last week`s 3-3 draw against Brentford from a hotel room due to a positive COVID-19 test, took some encouragement from his team`s display.

"I thought it was a good performance, especially the start. We were good for the first half an hour," he said.

"The pleasing thing today is how we started and finished the game. We created chances."

On a raw afternoon in north London, there was little to warm the hearts of Newcastle`s travelling Toon Army.
Their side were resolute and had Aaron Ramsdale not tipped Shelvey`s curling effort against the crossbar things might have been different.

Arsenal were over-deliberate but still carved out chances with Saka just failing to score on the stretch from Nuno Tavares`s superb diagonal pass.

Newcastle keeper Martin Dubravka, recalled for his first appearance of the season in place of Karl Darlow after recovering from injury, produced an acrobatic save to keep out Martin Odegaard`s free kick.

As halftime approached, Dubravka saved Emile Smith Rowe`s header and as the ball fell for Aubameyang he contrived to hit the post with the goal gaping.

When Arsenal finally cracked Newcastle`s defence it was no surprise Saka and Smith Rowe were involved. The latter combined well with Tavares who slipped a pass in for Saka to fire left-footed past Dubravka from a narrow angle.

Newcastle claimed a penalty when Callum Wilson chased Shelvey`s long pass forward but was knocked off balance by the covering Gabriel and within a minute they were two down.

Martinelli, who had just replaced the injured Saka, was picked out by a flighted pass from Takehiro Tomiyasu and as Dubravka came out the Brazilian planted a volley into the net.

Newcastle now face back-to-back home games against fellow strugglers Norwich City and Burnley.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli score as Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-0 in Premier League

Newcastle United's new manager Eddie Howe said on Wednesday that his first goal was to keep the club in the Premier League following their dismal start to the season, adding that his team must "suffer" and "sacrifice" to stay up.

Newcastle are winless and second from bottom in the league standings with five points from 11 games.

Speaking for the first time since succeeding Steve Bruce&nbsp;on Monday, Howe said: "I've had some good conversations with the owners but it's all about the short-term. The aim is to stay in the league, that's my main focus.

"Absolutely confident (can avoid relegation), but I make no promises on that. I'll give everything to the club. I believe we have the ability in the squad but it's going to take a lot of hard work and sacrifice."

Bruce left the club by mutual consent last month, two weeks after Newcastle were acquired&nbsp;by a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium.

Newcastle United appoint ex-Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe as manager after Steve Bruce's exit

Following Newcastle United being taken over by the new Saudi owners, the club locked horns with the Harry Kane-led Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League face-off on Sunday (October 17). Before the eventual result on Sunday, the exuberant fans of the top-flight club, which is now controlled by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), were seen dancing and rejoicing outside the St James’ Park along with waving the Saudi national flag; not pleasing a section.

'Culturally inappropriate': Newcastle urge fans to avoid traditional Arabic attire at games, release statement

Steve Bruce has left his position as Newcastle United manager by mutual consent, the Premier League team said in a statement on Wednesday, two weeks after they were taken over by a Saudi Arabian-backed consortium.

Bruce had appeared to be on borrowed time after the Premier League announced earlier this month that Newcastle had been sold to a consortium led by Saudi Arabia`s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

The 60-year-old had said following the change of ownership that he would understand if he was replaced but he was allowed to take charge of the 1,000th match in his managerial career when Newcastle hosted Tottenham Hotspur in the league, losing 3-2 last Sunday.

The signs were ominous, however, with Newcastle`s new director Amanda Staveley saying "change does not always happen overnight".

"I`m grateful to everyone connected with Newcastle United for the opportunity to manage this unique football club," Bruce said in a club statement.

"I would like to thank my coaching team, the players and the support staff in particular for all their hard work. There have been highs and lows, but they have given everything even in difficult moments and should be proud of their efforts.

"This is a club with incredible support, and I hope the new owners can take it forward to where we all want it to be. I wish everyone the very best of luck for the rest of this season and beyond."

Newcastle said Bruce`s assistant Graeme Jones will lead the team on an interim basis, starting with Saturday`s trip to Crystal Palace, and will be supported by the coaching team of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence, Ben Dawson and Simon Smith.

Sky Sports reported that former AS Roma manager Paulo Fonseca, who was on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year, was among a number of contenders for the job.

Newcastle`s defeat by Spurs, attended by Staveley and others on the board, spoiled the takeover celebrations at St James` Park, with fans also calling for Bruce to be sacked as Newcastle slipped to their fifth league loss of the campaign.

Bruce, who was appointed Newcastle manager in July 2019, was already on thin ice after a dismal start to the campaign that leaves the club languishing second-from-bottom in the league without a win after eight games.

Bruce, a lifelong Newcastle fan, was an unpopular choice for some supporters following his appointment after Spaniard Rafa Benitez left the club and said he was pained by the criticism and abuse he received.

He guided Newcastle to 13th and 12th-placed finishes in the league and helped them reach the quarter-finals of the FA Cup and the League Cup.

Ferran Torres scored his first Manchester City hat-trick as the Premier League champions beat Newcastle United 4-3 to claim an English record 12th consecutive away league win on Friday.

With Pep Guardiola's City having already bagged the title and Newcastle safe, there was nothing riding on the fixture but it served up some rich entertainment with Spaniard Torres especially enjoying himself at St James' Park.

"Incredible numbers and goals in his first season in the Premier League," Guardiola said of the 21-year-old signed from Valencia for 20 million pounds ($28.20 million) last August.

"He is so young and clinical. He is a guy brought as a winger but maybe we have to think as a striker."

Twice City had to come from a goal down as they extended the gap at the top of the table to 13 points.

Guardiola rested first-choice goalkeeper Ederson and handed 35-year-old former England player Scott Carson his first appearance for the club.

Carson's first action was to pick the ball out of the back of his net after Emil Krafth found space to head home Jonjo Shelvey's cross in the 25th minute.

Joao Cancelo's deflected drive levelled it up in the 39th minute and Torres put City ahead with a superbly improvised flick to direct Ilkay Guendogan's cross into the net.

But Newcastle were level in first-half stoppage time when Joelinton thumped a penalty past Carson after a complex VAR decision. Joelinton was clearly taken down by Nathan Ake in the box but VAR was required to decide whether Allan Saint-Maximin had been offside in the build-up.

It was proving a busy night for Carson and he faced another penalty just past the hour when Kyle Walker barged over Joe Willock in the area.

Carson saved Willock's effort but the Arsenal loanee turned in the rebound.

But City were in no mood to offer any gifts and were level again within two minutes as Torres converted a cross by Raheem Sterling on the stretch.

Two minutes later he completed his hat-trick when he showed great balance to volley home a rebound after Cancelo struck the woodwork with a fierce drive from outside the area.

Torres now has 13 goals in all competitions for City this season and while Carson's contribution has been far less, Guardiola was full of praise for his stand-in keeper, too.

"We are incredibly happy for him. He is an important player for us. He is a real leader and today was an exceptional day to let him play," the Spaniard said.

Premier League: Torres hat-trick as record-breaking Man City beat Newcastle

Manchester United came from behind to beat Brighton 2-1 on Sunday to cut Manchester City's lead at the top of the Premier League to 14 points, while Tottenham's top-four challenge suffered a setback as Joe Willock's late strike rescued a 2-2 draw for lowly Newcastle.

Not for the first time this season, United needed a second-half fightback after a dismal first 45 minutes to take all three points thanks to goals from Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood.

Danny Welbeck deservedly opened the scoring for the Seagulls against his old club before Lewis Dunk hit the crossbar for the visitors.

However, Brighton also repeated the story of their season as they failed to make the most of their dominance before the break.

Rashford slotted home an equaliser on 62 minutes from Bruno Fernandes's pass to reward United's marked improvement.

Fernandes was involved again for the winner as his cross was volleyed back across goal by Paul Pogba and into the path of Greenwood to head home just his second league goal of the season.

United's chances of chasing down City look forlorn with the runaway league leaders needing just 11 points from their remaining seven games to seal a third title in four years.

But victory opened up an 11-point cushion for the Red Devils over fifth-placed Tottenham and Liverpool in their quest to qualify for next season's Champions League.

"It's a long way up (to City), but we want to consolidate second place," said Solskjaer.

<h2>- 'Same coach, different players' -</h2>

Spurs were left to rue letting another lead slip away at St. James' Park.

Jose Mourinho's side were just five minutes away from moving into fourth place thanks to Harry Kane's first-half double.

Joelinton had put Newcastle ahead and Steve Bruce's men were rewarded for a much-improved performance when on-loan Arsenal midfielder Willock smashed in off the underside of the bar five minutes from time.

Tottenham edge ahead of Liverpool on goal difference but are still two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea with eight games left.

"I'm frustrated. We needed to win the match. We created some instability with so many individual defensive mistakes that we made," Mourinho said.

Asked why Tottenham have struggled to hold onto leads when his teams have been so solid defensively in the past, Mourinho replied: "Same coach, different players.

"The Premier League is hard and is high-level football, and when in some actions you don't show that you belong to that high level of football, it's difficult."

Willock's goal could prove invaluable for fourth-bottom Newcastle as they moved three points clear of Fulham, who were beaten 3-1 at Aston Villa.

Fulham looked set to move out of the drop zone when Aleksandar Mitrovic pounced on a loose pass by Tyrone Mings to score his first league goal since September.

Villa had looked devoid of ideas without talisman Jack Grealish due to injury.

But Dean Smith's men suddenly sparked into life to score three times in the final 12 minutes.

Egyptian winger Trezeguet came off the bench to score twice in three minutes to turn the game around.

Ollie Watkins then tapped home from Bertrand Traore's cross to round off the scoring.

<h2>- Saints alive -</h2>

Earlier on Sunday, Southampton took a huge step towards survival by coming from 2-0 down to beat Burnley 3-2.

Chris Wood's penalty and Matej Vydra's strike gave the visitors a dream start inside 28 minutes.

But Ralph Hasenhuttl's side&nbsp;hit back impressively as Stuart Armstrong and Danny Ings scored before half-time.

Nathan Redmond bagged the 66th-minute winner when he volleyed home from Theo Walcott's cross.

"These points were important," Hasenhuttl said. "When you see five goals it's always good for TV, but not so good for the hearts of the managers."

After only their second league win in 13 games, FA Cup semi-finalists Southampton are three points above Burnley, who sit seven points ahead of Fulham.

Singapore police are investigating a company linked to two entrepreneurs trying to buy Newcastle United after an accounting firm lodged a police report over unauthorised signatures on the group's financial statements.

The two Singaporean entrepreneurs, cousins Terence and Nelson Loh, head the Bellagraph Nova Group along with a Chinese business partner.

The group's bid to buy the English Premier League football club hit a snag after reports emerged last month of manipulated photos purporting to show former US president Barack Obama in a meeting with its founders in Paris, among other inconsistent claims.

Ernst and Young said Saturday it did not sign off on the documents of Novena Global Healthcare Group, but served as the auditor of a Singapore subsidiary in 2017.&nbsp;

"Ernst &amp; Young LLP were never the auditors of Novena Global Healthcare Group (incorporated in Cayman Islands)," a spokesperson said in a statement sent to AFP.

The police confirmed that a report was lodged and said they were looking into the matter.&nbsp;

The Novena Global Healthcare Group is owned by the Lohs, according to the Straits Times newspaper.&nbsp;

Terence Loh denied any wrongdoing through his lawyer, the newspaper reported.&nbsp;

Singapore police investigate firm linked to Newcastle bidders

Newcastle United said on Wednesday a Saudi-backed bid to takeover the club has now been rejected by the Premier League.

The investment group, which included the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben, said they had withdrawn their bid for the club in July after waiting months for the English top-flight's approval.

A&nbsp;£300 million ($391 million) deal to buy the side from unpopular owner Mike Ashley had been agreed in April.

However, the bid had attracted scrutiny due to the piracy of sports broadcast rights, including Premier League matches, in Saudi and the state's human rights record.

Amanda Staveley of PCP Capital Partners said when the bid was withdrawn that the Premier League wanted the Saudi state to become a director of the club as the PIF was not deemed to be an arm of the government.

"Newcastle United can confirm that the Premier League has rejected a takeover bid made by PCP Capital Partners, the Reuben Brothers and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) based on its Owners and Directors test," Newcastle said in a statement.

"This conclusion has been reached despite the club providing the Premier League with overwhelming evidence and legal opinions that PIF is independent and autonomous of the Saudi Arabian government.

"The club and its owners do not accept that Premier League chief executive Richard Masters and the Premier League have acted appropriately in relation to this matter and will be considering all relevant options available to them."

Masters said in a letter to Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah last month that Staveley's consortium had refused the opportunity to take the issue over the status of the PIF to independent arbitration.

Supporters have long campaigned for Ashley to sell the club as they have been disillusioned with his 13-year spell as owner, which has included two relegations from the Premier League.

"Mike Ashley understands fans' frustrations and would like to reassure them that he has been fully committed to ensuring this takeover process reached completion as he felt it was in the best interests of the club," added the Newcastle statement.

"Mike continues to be fully supportive to (manager) Steve Bruce, the players and all the staff and wishes them well for the upcoming season."

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said on Wednesday it will consider adapting its criteria for potential buyers after the failed takeover.

"We are going to look again at the owners' and directors' test and some of the issues and specifics of it," he told the BBC.

"It's time to have another look at it in light of recent events."

Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle rejected by the Premier League

Newcastle United fans say they have been treated with contempt after a 300 million-pound takeover bid from a Saudi-backed consortium collapsed on Thursday.

The group, which included Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund PIF, PCP Capital Partners and Reuben Brothers, announced they were ending their interest in the deal which had been delayed by the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a>’s owners and directors test.

The end of the Saudi bid left the North East club still in the hands of British businessman Mike Ashley, who has long faced protests and opposition from the fans.

Many Newcastle fans had welcomed the takeover, seeing it as a chance to boost the club’s fortunes through investment in new players.

But the bid had been criticised by human rights campaigners and had come up against questions about pirate broadcasts of Premier League games in Saudi Arabia.

Newcastle fans expressed frustration at the length of the Premier League’s scrutiny and press criticism of the takeover.

“The supporters of Newcastle United have been treated with contempt by large parts of the football media and the Premier League during this failed takeover process,” said the NUFC Supporters Trust.

“It’s been made clear that we are the least important people in a decision which affects us the most. We need answers,” they added.

Chi Onwurah, Labour Member of Parliament for Newcastle Central, said she would be contacting the Premier League.

“I know that many constituents will be disappointed and frustrated by the withdrawal of the latest NUFC takeover offer. I will be writing to the Premier League to ask why they took so long and gave so little clarity to NUFC fans,” she wrote on Twitter.

The city’s local newspaper, The Chronicle, published an open letter to the Premier League saying the team’s supporters were owed an explanation.

“A transformative but deeply controversial takeover is off. Having dreamed of something different, the city now confronts the reality of what Newcastle are: unloved, divorced from its people, deeply divided and facing the most uncertain of futures,” the paper wrote.

“The Premier League tonight stands accused of blocking a once-in-a-lifetime investment in the city and football club. It is a serious accusation that demands a response,” it added.

Noting that the Premier League has kept quiet, observing the confidential nature of the owners and directors test, the paper said the time had come for openness.

“But without clarity or the decency to even acknowledge the festering sores at one of your member clubs, we do not know. Left in the dark, Newcastle fans are furious tonight,” The Chronicle said.

The Premier League and Newcastle United did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Newcastle fans demand answers after Saudi bid collapses

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> wanted the Saudi state to become a director of Newcastle United for a takeover deal to go through, according to a leading member of the investment group who were looking to buy the club.&nbsp;

A proposed £300 million ($391 million) takeover collapsed on Thursday when the investment group of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben and Amanda Staveley of PCP Capital Partners said they had withdrawn their interest after three months waiting for the Premier League's approval.

Issues over Saudi piracy of sports broadcasting rights, including the Premier League, and pressure from human rights groups to block the deal complicated the process.

Staveley has been interested in buying the club for the past three years and had finally agreed a deal with Newcastle owner Mike Ashley in April with PIF reportedly set to take an 80 percent stake in the club.

"The Premier League wanted the country, Saudi, to become a director of the football club," Staveley told The Athletic.

"That's what this is about. They were effectively saying 'PIF wouldn't be the ultimate beneficial owner, we believe it's actually the government, therefore we want the country to become a director'.

"The Premier League made it so hard. It would be unprecedented. No country has ever become a director of a club. It's ridiculous."

Staveley also claimed that other Premier League clubs played a part in influencing the league's decision to stall over seeing the deal through.

Newcastle have not won a major domestic trophy since 1955, but could still count on regular crowds of 50,000 before coronavirus pandemic forced stadiums to close.

Many fans dreamed that the riches of a Saudi-backed project could replicate Manchester City's success in winning four Premier League titles since Abu Dhabi's Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008.

"We know that other clubs briefed heavily against it. Because they were jealous," Staveley added.

"Newcastle are the last great untapped club. The last great club with so much potential to grow and improve and with a fanbase who were already there and who wanted it so much."

Newcastle's all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer said the club's fans have been left angry and disappointed by the collapse of the takeover.

"There's a lot of anger, understandably so, and a massive amount of disappointment," Shearer told the BBC.

"They want their club to compete, they want their club to move forward, that's why yesterday was such a disappointing day."

Retail tycoon Ashley is a deeply unpopular figure among the Newcastle support for his treatment of fans and an unwillingness to invest on the field to improve the club's fortunes.

Newcastle have finished 13th in the Premier League table for the past two seasons and have twice been relegated to the Championship during Ashley's 13-year reign.

"We can only hope and pray that new owners come in at some stage and take the club back to where it belongs because that's what the fans of Newcastle deserve," said Shearer.

Premier League wanted Saudi state to become Newcastle director - Staveley

Newcastle United and the Premier League should put moral values ahead of the financial rewards from a proposed £300 million ($372 million) Saudi-backed takeover, the fiancee of murdered dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi said on Sunday.

Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, will reportedly take an 80 percent stake in Newcastle should the takeover be approved by the Premier League.

The mooted deal comes against the backdrop of the death of Khashoggi, a Washington Post contributor and US resident who was killed in 2018 while at Saudi Arabia's consulate in Istanbul to obtain paperwork ahead of his wedding to Hatice Cengiz.

Turkish officials say a 15-man Saudi squad strangled Khashoggi and cut his body into pieces. His remains were never found.

Cengiz has already called for the Premier League to block the Newcastle takeover and now she has questioned the morality of top-flight chiefs and the Tyneside club.

"Moral values should prevail," Cengiz told the BBC on Sunday.

"My message would be to the management of Newcastle United and to the decision makers.

"We should consider ethical values, not just financial or political ones. Money cannot buy everything in the world. So the message that will be given to people like Crown Prince is extremely important.

"There should be no place in English football for those credibly accused of atrocities and murder."

A Saudi court in December sentenced five people to death over the killing, handing three others long jail sentences and acquitting the remaining three charged in the case.

Rights group Amnesty International condemned the outcome as a "whitewash".

The two top figures investigated over the killing -- both part of the crown prince's inner circle -- were exonerated.

Both the CIA and a United Nations special envoy have directly linked the crown prince to the killing, a charge the kingdom vehemently denies.

"We don't want this deal to go ahead. We are not just talking about the murder of a human being but the efforts to keep all hopes regarding the future, to keep human rights alive, to support justice and to start a transformation in the Middle East," Cengiz said.

"This deal seems to be about buying something. But there is a wider picture. Saudi Arabia shows the world its face of reform.&nbsp;

"But it has another face where the reality is far from what is shown to the world. This is why we want this (deal) to be stopped and not be completed."

The Premier League must determine whether the bid fulfils its owners and directors' test.

Oliver Dowden, the UK culture secretary, told a meeting of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee last week it was a "matter for the Premier League" rather than government.

Khashoggi's fiancee insists moral values must come first in Newcastle takeover

A Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle United appears to be nearing completion at a time when the rest of the football industry is on its knees due to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

For Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the crisis presents a commercial opportunity and a chance to break into the lucrative Premier League.

But the potential £300 million ($370 million) deal, which will reportedly see the Saudi fund take an 80 percent stake in the club,&nbsp;is facing fierce opposition from human rights groups and one of Saudi's regional rivals.

The Premier League bubble is close to bursting as clubs scramble to avoid losing hundreds of millions in broadcast rebates if the season is not completed and a deep recession threatens income from gate receipts, merchandise and sponsorship.

As a result, transfer fees are expected to drop sharply while wages will also be depressed, with even the world's wealthiest clubs now hastily arranging pay cuts or deferrals with their star players.

<h2>- Rights concerns -</h2>

The spectre of a Saudi takeover throws another spanner in the works for the league's governance at a time of crisis.

Critics have accused Saudi Arabia of "sports washing", saying the government uses sport as a way of distracting attention from its human rights record.

Global rights group Amnesty International wrote to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters on Tuesday, warning the competition "risks becoming a patsy" unless it takes a serious look at the rights issue.

"If the crown prince, by virtue of his authority over the Public Investment Fund, takes control of Newcastle United, we are questioning how that can possibly be positive for the reputation of the Premier League," Felix Jakens, Amnesty UK's Head of Priority Campaigns and Individuals at Risk, told AFP.

The Newcastle bid comes just months after five people were sentenced to death over the 2018 murder in Saudi Arabia's Istanbul consulate of Jamal Khashoggi, a journalist who had been critical of the Saudi regime.

The murder, described as a "rogue" operation by Riyadh, tipped Saudi Arabia into one of its worst diplomatic crises and tarnished the reputation of the crown prince , who is the de facto ruler of the country.

But resistance to the deal may come down to a monetary rather than moral judgement.

One of the Premier League's biggest overseas broadcasters, BeIN Sports, has written to all 20 English top-flight clubs warning the "future economic model of football" is at stake if the Saudi takeover is allowed to go through.

Qatar-based BeIN accuses Saudi of masterminding the pirate broadcasting of BeIN output, which included EPL games, as part of a spat between Doha and Riyadh. Saudi denies the claims.

<h2>- Manchester City template -</h2>

For those competing at the top of the table, a Saudi-backed Newcastle could also become a threat on the pitch.

Prior to a takeover from Sheikh Mansour, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family in 2008, Manchester City had not won a major trophy since 1976.&nbsp;

The English champions have now won 11 in the past nine years, including four Premier League titles.

The investment required to raise City's status from mid-table mediocrity to title contenders resulted in losses of £584 million in the first six years of the Abu Dhabi reign.

By buying in at a time when most other clubs are strapped for cash, the PIF could transform Newcastle's fortunes on the field more quickly and at a much lower cost.

"The vultures and predators will pick off good players for very modest fees," football finance expert Kieran Maguire told AFP.

The Saudi PIF did not respond to AFP's request for comment.

The chances of other clubs mirroring what City and Qatari-owned Paris Saint-Germain have done in spending their way into the elite of European football seemed to have been ended by financial fair play (FFP) rules.

To gain access to UEFA's lucrative European competitions, clubs must not lose more than 30 million euros ($33 million) over a three-year period.

Indeed, subject to an appeal, City have been banned by UEFA from European competitions for the next two seasons for overstating their sponsorship revenue.

Premier League rules on FFP are far less restrictive, with losses up to £105 million over the course of three years allowed.

However, given the damage wreaked on the football industry by the coronavirus shutdown, the authorities may have to relax punitive sanctions for breaching FFP in the coming seasons.

A UEFA working group is already studying how FFP will need to be adapted following the crisis.

Should their appetite for spending not be curbed by FFP and with the PIF sitting on assets worth $320 billion, Newcastle could soon be the envy of European football.

Coronavirus crisis presents opportunity for Saudi's Newcastle project

The much-talked-about takeover of English club Newcastle United is set to be completed with Saudi-backed consortium PCP Capitals Partners paying the deposit amount while exchanging contracts with current owner Mike Ashley.

With contracts exchanged, the only element of the deal left is Premier League’s Owners and Directors’ Test, which verifies the ability to fund the club alongside checking any criminal records of those involved in a takeover.

After the Premier League’s Owners and Directors’ Test is completed, the remained of the £300m fee will be handed over to Ashley and the deal could be officially announced as early as the end of April.&nbsp;

The Premier League began the background checks earlier in April on those involved in Amada Staveley’s consortium, which includes Saudi’s Crown Prince, Mohammed bin Salman.

Saudi’s Crown Price controls the country’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which is set to own 80 per cent of Newcastle United’s shares.&nbsp;

However, any issues relating to Saudi’s human rights record would need a review from the UK government to decide whether the deal could be finalized – an extremely unlikely prospect.

Premier League leaders Liverpool head to Old Trafford on Sunday to face Manchester United and rarely have the odds been so in favour of an away win.

Liverpool have won just five times at United in the Premier League era and the Red Devils have won the fixture 16 times, but the gulf in quality between the sides has widened significantly in recent years.

While Juergen Klopp's side has a 100 per cent&nbsp;record in the Premier League, United have just two league wins this season and after their 1-0 defeat by Newcastle United the international break, they are down in 12th place, 15 points behind their arch-rivals.

To add to their problems, United look set to be without goalkeeper David De Gea who picked up a groin injury on international duty with Spain.

"David needs a scan. I think he'll be out. It certainly looked like it anyway...so it's just one of those things," said manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Argentine Sergio Romero is expected to stand in for De Gea and can expect a busy time against Klopp's potent attack.

French midfielder Paul Pogba has not yet recovered fully from his ankle injury but there is better news on the fitness of forward Anthony Martial and full-backs Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

"I can't tell you 100 per cent (who) is going to be fit as something might happen," said Solskjaer.

"But hopefully Aaron and Anthony will last the training this week and be available for selection. If it's for half a game or 30 minutes I don't know but let's see where they're at," he said.

United's Spanish midfielder Juan Mata believes the clash with their old rivals offers an opportunity to kick-start the season.

"We have a great chance to change the dynamic and we are all very motivated to take the win. We are United, we are playing at home and we will give everything to be able to take the victory that our fans deserve in such a special game," Mata said.

Champions Manchester City faces a tricky trip to Selhurst Park to face a Crystal Palace team who beat them at the Etihad in January.

City are eight points adrift of Liverpool. Palace sits just two points behind City in the sixth position after an impressive start to the season, but this fixture is the first of a straight run of five against sides directly above them.

Tottenham Hotspur, beaten 3-0 at Brighton &amp; Hove Albion last time out, will look to bounce back against winless bottom club Watford.

Fourth-placed Leicester City host Burnley who are seventh and Frank Lampard's improving Chelsea entertain Newcastle on Saturday.

Third-placed Arsenal visits Sheffield United on Monday.

Tottenham Hotspur, beaten 3-0 at Brighton & Hove Albion last time out, will look to bounce back against winless bottom club Watford. Fourth-placed Leicester City host Burnley who are seventh and Frank Lampard's improving Chelsea entertain Newcastle on Saturday. Third-placed Arsenal visits Sheffield United on Monday.
