Kane Williamson said the legacy of the All Blacks inspires&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand's cricketers as he prepares to return from a long injury layoff to captain the team at the World Cup.

New&nbsp;Zealand&nbsp;have won their opening two matches in India in the absence of their skipper, who injured his knee while playing in the Indian Premier League in late March.

The Black Caps face Bangladesh in Chennai on Friday in their third match of the tournament.

"It's been quite a journey but largely a good one that's had some really good progress and you know I've said a number of times, really excited to be named in the World Cup squad, be sitting here now and really excited at the prospect of tomorrow," he said on Thursday.

The Black Caps have never won the World Cup, though they came agonisingly close in 2019, beaten by an England team who had scored more boundaries in the match.

That contrasts with the All Blacks, who have won the Rugby World Cup three times and play Ireland in the quarter-finals in France on Saturday.

Williamson, 33, was asked whether that legacy&nbsp;of success inspired his men.

"We love the All Blacks," he said. "You know, coming from&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand&nbsp;obviously rugby is our number one game and so I think everybody in the squad is pretty passionate about rugby and following their journey at the moment at the World Cup and the success that they've had.

"For us, we've had some really enjoyable times recently and got pretty close, but you still have to start again. And there's been some good performances so far."

He added: "We're here as a cricket team but I think something that you do hear often about their side is their culture, their environment, and their ability to keep moving forward as a team and adapting to what's in front of them, whether that's the movement of the game and how that keeps changing and evolving.&nbsp;

"They keep doing really well at staying ahead of that curve. We just want to keep getting better as a side, keep growing as a side and that's our focus."

<h2>'Small steps'</h2>

Williamson is a key batsman for&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealand, amassing 6,554 runs in one-day international cricket at an impressive average of nearly 48.&nbsp;

He said his return had involved a "series of really small steps", admitting there were doubts over whether he would be fit to play any part in the tournament although he did feature in the pre-event warm-up schedule.

"To be honest, it was probably a good thing just to get my head stuck into rehab each day and not sort of rush it and that was really my focus," he said.

"And I was fortunate as well I had a really, really good team around me back home and also fortunate not to have a lot of setbacks during that time, so there were lots of little steps forward which I guess accumulate to being here now really."

ODI World Cup 2023: New Zealand look to continue winning run as Bangladesh eye first victory

New Zealand won their second ODI World Cup 2023 game against the Netherlands by 99 runs, consolidating their position at the top of the table. The fact that New Zealand were without their top batter and regular skipper Kane Williamson and ace bowler Tim Southee, makes these two wins even more sweet.

While Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra hit centuries in the first game for New Zealand against England, all the top five batters scored runs in their second game against the Dutch as the Kiwis posted 322/7 in their 50 overs.

For the Blackcaps, Will Young scored 70 while the first game's Player of the Match Rachin Ravindra scored 51 in the Netherlands games. Apart from them, Daryl Mitchell scored 48 and stand-in skipper Tom Latham also managed to contribute 53.&nbsp;

With Kane Williamson most probably going to play in the next game for New Zealand, the Kiwis will have a difficult decision to drop one of the batters from their winning XI of the last two teams.

Speaking on the same, WION's cricket expert and 1996 World Cup-winning coach Dav Whatmore said that it could either be Glenn Phillips or Mark Chapman.

"It could either be Glenn Phillis or Mark Chapman who's going to be dropped when Kane Williamson comes back as rest of the batters are scoring runs," said Whatmore.

The chances are Chapman will get the sack rather than Phillips as the latter had been handy with his spin in the first game against England.

As for the bowling department, Tim Southee could replace Trent Boult who has been off-colour in the first two games for New Zealand while Matt Henry has done well.

In the spin department, Ravindra and Mitchell Santner, who took a five-for in the game against the Netherlands, seem a lock-in in the side for the next game as well.

New Zealand next play Bangladesh on October 13 in Chennai.

ODI World Cup 2023: Who will New Zealand drop when Kane Williamson is back? Dav Whatmore answers

Kane Williamson has been ruled of New Zealand's second match of the ODI World Cup 2023 as he recovers from the ACL injury sustained during the IPL 2023. The Kiwi batter also didn't take part in the Blackcaps' opening fixture against England as well. New Zealand had won the tournament opener against England by nine wickets and play Netherlands next on October 9 in Hyderabad.

The news was reported by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on their official Instagram handle.

"Kane's been progressing very well,” New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said on Sunday (October 8) as reported by the ICC.&nbsp;

"I think the fielding is still the element for him that he's just got to get a little bit higher, and he gets a little bit more trust in his body," he added before saying that the is confident of Williamson taking part in the third game on October 13 vs Bangladesh.

"But he's progressing really well and we are pretty confident that he will be playing the third match for us," added the Kiwi head coach.

"We've got another training to get through today, so we'll finalise the team (for the match against Netherlands) once we've got through that training."

"But at this stage with Kane, we are looking like the third game is when he will start the tournament.”

In Williamson's absence, New Zealand handed Rachin Ravindra his ODI World Cup debut vs England. The batter didn't disappoint as he scored fastest World Cup hundred for New Zealand during his unbeaten innings of 123 off 96 balls. He was also awarded Player of the Match for his ton and bowling figures of 1/76.

Ravindra, with Devon Conway who also hit 152 not out, tore apart England bowling attack with unbeaten 274-run partnership in Ahmedabad as the reached the 284 with nine wickets in hand.

ODI World Cup 2023: Kane Williamson ruled out of Netherlands match in a blow to New Zealand

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson's fifty in warm-up game against Pakistan injected a lot of confidence in Kiwi team's ODI World Cup campaign. Williamson, who had injured his ACL in IPL 2023, scored a fifty, although not fluent but enough to set up a successful run-chase of 346 runs. It's a massive boost for Blackcaps' plans who had taken the risk of including injured Williamson in the squad. The skipper, however, won't be playing the opening fixture against England but hopes to play afterwards.

"Just great to get through some batting out in the middle and be part of a match, which was really nice and it [knee] held up pretty well," Williamson said after New Zealand won the game. "[It needed] a little bit of icing afterwards but it's all part of the process. Yeah, it wasn't a reality certainly five months ago and [I've] been quite fortunate with some of that recovery and to be named in the squad is really exciting for me and just really looking forward to getting out there again. It was nice to do that today (September 29)."

"It was largely pretty good, which was pleasing. Nice to sort of build on that. It was a fantastic hit-out obviously. Pakistan are an outstanding side. I mean both teams were trying to get what they wanted out of it, in terms of bowlers getting overs they needed and time in the legs. So, it's an exercise, but also nice to compete and do all those things. As a bowling unit and batting unit, plenty to take away from it. There's always things to work on and it was a great batting performance today. It was a really good surface and it's nice that we were able to put together partnerships and get time in the middle," added Williamson.

The Kiwi skipper also aims to take to larger part in New Zealand's second warm-up game against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram on October 2.

'Fortunate' New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson pleased with knee holding up in ODI WC warm-up game vs Pak

New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee has been cleared to join the Kiwi ODI World Cup squad. The pacer had fractured his right thumb in the fourth and final ODI against England last month and flew&nbsp;back home afterwards.

Southee had surgery on his fractured thumb and continues to recover from the injury ahead of the Black Caps' opening match on the first day of the World Cup against England on October 5. If fit to play, it would be Southee's fourth appearance in the World Cup, having previously played in 2011, 2015 and 2019 editions of the quadrennial event.

Southee has been a stalwart of New Zealand cricket since making his debut in 2008. The pacer has played in 157 ODIs, taking 214 wickets with a best of 7/33. He also has batting abilities and has one fifty to his name in 50-over cricket. In ODI World Cups, Southee has 34 wickets to his name in 18 matches.

Southee is&nbsp;not the only injury concern for New Zealand who fell short of winning the World Cup last time against England in the final under dramatic (or unfortunate) circumstances. Kiwi skipper Kane Williamson is also under a cloud of doubt for their campaign opener after suffering an ACL injury in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023.

Williamson has also been added to the 15-man Kiwi squad and hopes to be fit for the game against England. This will be the fourth appearance for Williamson as well in the World Cup.

Currently, New Zealand are in Bangladesh for the three-match ODI series and are expected to fly to India soon to take part in the warm-up games. Kiwis, like all other teams, play two warm-up games ahead of the World Cup - against Pakistan on September 29 in Hyderabad and South Africa on October 2 in Thiruvananthapuram.

Tim Southee cleared to join New Zealand ODI World Cup squad as he recovers from hand injury

Bangladesh bowler Hasan Mahmud ran New Zealander Ish Sodhi out at the non-striker's end during the second ODI between the two teams in Mirpur on Saturday, September 23. Litton Das, the skipper of host team, however, decided to withdraw the appeal and called Sodhi back on the crease.

The incident happened in the 46th over of New Zealand batting and Sodhi was batting on 17 at the time. The leg-spinner went on to score 35 runs in the end as the Blackcaps posted modest 254 on a slow and turning pitch. The decision from Bangladesh to call Sodhi although won a lot hearts and even Sodhi hugged the bowler in the end. Have a look at the video here:

Batting first, Tom Blundell top scored for the Kiwis with 68 while Henry Nicholls scored 49. Sodhi's 35 were the third highest for New Zealand as their batmen found it hard to score on a typical sub-continent pitch. For Bangladesh, Khaled Ahmed and Mahedi Hasan took two-wickets each.

Bangladesh lost the first wicket early but returning batsman Tamim Iqbal scored 44 while trying to give some base to the chase but Sodhi had other plans. The leggie ran through the batting order as Bangladesh collapsed from 60/1 to 167 all out. Apart from Tamim, Mahmudullah also scored 49 on his return to the side.&nbsp;

Ish Sodhi was rightfully adjudged Player of the Match for his 35 runs and 6/39 bowling figures. New Zealand now lead the three-match series 1-0 after the first match was washed away. The leggie ran through the batting order as Bangladesh collapsed from 60/1 to 167 all out. Apart from Tamim, Mahmudullah also scored 49 on his return to the side. Ish Sodhi was rightfully adjudged Player of the Match for his 35 runs and 6/39 bowling figures. New Zealand now lead the three-match series 1-0 after the first match was washed away. The third and final game of the series will be played on September 26 before both the team fly to India for the upcoming ODI World Cup. WATCH: Bangladesh bowler runs out New Zealand's Ish Sodhi at non-striker end before calling him back

New Zealand spinner Ish Sodhi produced most satisfying performance of his career which included a maiden five-wicket haul as he claimed a six-for in his team's win over Bangladesh in second ODI. The performance came at the right time with ODI World Cup just around the corner.&nbsp;

"The most satisfying wicket actually was the fifth wicket," Sodhi said after the match. "Not necessarily because it was five wickets but I worked really hard on my run-up to bowl a fraction quicker compared to a year or two ago. That was the type of delivery that I was working hard towards. It was really pleasing to see that it got me a wicket."

Speaking on if he has changed in his bowling to be be more successful, Sodhi said he tried&nbsp;to get more skiddy.

"A lot of the really successful new-age leg spinners are a lot shorter than what I am. They get the ball to skid to keep the stumps in play all the time. I thought that the bounce could play against me sometimes. One, they don't actually hit the stumps.

"Sometimes on slow wickets, I can sit in the wickets a little bit more. I was trying to add the skiddy sort of nature to my game by changing my run-up a year ago. Certainly not trying to neglect my height as well. I am trying to use it as much as I can," he said.

Talking about his performance, the spinner definitely liked it and hoped for more such performances in the coming years.

"It is great to be in the company [of bowlers taking six-fors in ODIs]. I can hopefully produce some match-winning performances for New Zealand in the coming years," he said.

Rain washes out first ODI between New Zealand and Bangladesh

England crushed New Zealand by 100 runs in the fourth one-day international at Lord's on Friday to seal a morale-boosting 3-1 series victory as they fine-tune preparations for their World Cup defence.

Jos Buttler's power-packed team were indebted to opener Dawid Malan, who made a sparkling 127 off 114 balls in a total of 311-9 at a sun-drenched Lord's.

New Zealand, dramatically beaten by England in the 2019 World Cup final on the same ground, made a solid start but early wickets slowed their momentum and they were dismissed for 211 in 38.2 overs.

Off-spinner Moeen Ali was the pick of the England bowlers, taking 4-50 in his 10 overs

Both teams were missing a clutch of first-choice players for what served as a dress rehearsal for the opening match of the World Cup in the Indian city of Ahmedabad on October 5.

England's total appeared within range but Buttler brilliantly ran out Devon Conway with a direct hit before David Willey had Will Young caught behind for 24.

The visitors were reduced to 52-3 when Daryl Mitchell was bowled by paceman Brydon Carse with his third ball.

Tom Latham joined Henry Nicholls at the crease and the pair took the score to 88 before Latham was bowled by Moeen.

Moeen struck again, trapping Nicholls lbw for 41 to reduce the visitors to 122-5, with their task looking increasingly difficult under the floodlights.

The spinner dismissed Kyle Jamieson and Matt Henry in successive balls to reduce New Zealand to 169-8.

All-rounder Rachin Ravindra entertained the crowd with some lusty blows, but his dismissal for 61 off 48 balls, bowled by Sam Curran, signalled the end of the innings, with the injured Tim Southee unable to bat.

<h2>Malan stars with bat</h2>

Earlier, Malan anchored England's innings after they won the toss, making the most of his opportunity at the top of the order in the continuing absence of the injured Jason Roy.

Fellow opener Jonny Bairstow (13) departed early, bringing former Test captain Joe Root to the crease.

Root, in scratchy form, was dropped twice early, with New Zealand paceman Southee injuring his thumb in putting down the second chance, before running out of luck when he was bowled by Ravindra.

A New Zealand team spokesman later confirmed that Southee had dislocated and fractured a bone in his right thumb, putting his World Cup participation in doubt.

Harry Brook, not in England's provisional World Cup squad, failed to make the most of his chance to fill in for the rested Ben Stokes, departing for 10 to give Ravindra a second wicket.

Malan, who scored 96 in the third ODI, reached his three figures in the 32nd over with a whipped shot for two on the leg side.

Buttler soon departed in tame fashion, caught at mid-off for 36, reducing England to 195-4 and slowing their momentum.

Malan eventually fell for 127 edging a wide delivery from Ravindra to wicketkeeper Latham.

Wickets continued to tumble at regular intervals but Liam Livingstone (28), Sam Curran (20) and Willey (19) all chipped in as England moved past 300.

Ravindra finished with 4-60 off his 10 overs while Henry and Mitchell took two wickets apiece.

England put away New Zealand comfortably to secure ODI series ahead of World Cup

England's Test skipper Ben Stokes, who recently made a return to the 50-over squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup, scored 182 to set up the new highest individual score for his team in ODIs. Stokes scorched the New Zealand bowling attack in the third ODI of the ongoing ODI series for his record-breaking innings. Stokes' innings, which included 15 fours and nine sixes, came in 124 balls.

Before Stokes, Jason Roy held the record of the highest individual score for England in ODIs with his 180 against Australia in 2018. The innings from Stokes comes at the right moment for England as they look to defend their crown in the ODI World Cup which starts next month on October 5 in India.

Notably, Stokes was also the one who had orchestrated England's maiden World Cup victory in the final against New Zealand in 2019 under dramatic circumstances. With the innings, the Englishman also justified his inclusion in the ODI set-up right away. Stokes's inclusion in the side made a few heads turn as it potentially costed England's up-and-rising star Harry Brook his place in England's World Cup squad.

As for the match, the four-ODI series stood equal at 1-1 going into the third ODI on September 13. Stokes came out to bat in the third over at number four with England two down for 13 in 2.4 overs. The southpaw then added 199 runs for the third wicket with Dawid Malan (96).

Stokes then added 77 runs with his skipper Jos Buttler (38) before New Zealand pulled things back a bit. Stokes was the sixth English wicket to fall but not before he propelled his side to 348 in 44.3 overs. England, who looked set for 400 when Stokes was batting, couldn't capitalize on the platform once he departed and got all-out for 368 runs in 48.1 overs.

Ben Stokes records highest individual score for England in ODIs with sensational ton against New Zealand

New Zealand have announced their 15-man squad for the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup scheduled to be held in India from October 5. There were no surprises in the Kiwi squad with all the expected players making the cut. Adam Milne, the recently-injured fast bowler, was left out while all-rounder Rachin Ravindra was given a spot in the team. Apart from Milne, opening batsman Finn Allen also missed out.

Milne had played in the 2015 World Cup but has been sidelined ever since with injuries. He made a comeback to the ODI side in 2022 but picked up an injury in the ongoing four-match ODI series against England.

"We had to make a decision, ultimately, for the opening batting position and it came down Finn and Will Young," New Zealand coach Gary Stead said. "And we just felt that when we looked through what the potential gameplan was looking like in India, looked at the grounds, and also looked at the form of the two players as well that Youngy was the right guy to go with.

"We know the value Will brings and have been really pleased with the way he's played in the last couple of games without going on to get a big one but it certainly looks encouraging," he added.

New Zealand have been facing some injury issues with all-rounder Michael Bracewell also out with hamstring issues. This prompted Kiwis to expand their search for other options and hence Ravindra got a call. 2019 World Cup squad member Jimmy Neesham also made it to the squad.

CWC '23: New Zealand announce 15-man squad, Indian origin all-rounder Rachin Ravindra included

New Zealand fast bowler Adam Milne has been ruled out of the ongoing ODI series against England after picking up an injury. The Kiwis are currently in England for a four-match ODI series and lead it 1-0. Milne didn't play the first ODI either. The fast bowler, who has suffered from a low-grade hamstring injury, is now also under a shadow of doubt to make it to the final ICC ODI World Cup squad for the BlackCaps.

While New Zealand have selected a 15-man provisional squad for the quadrennial tournament, changes can be done till September 28 without permission from the ICC. New Zealand are expected to name their final 15 in an event on Monday, September 11.

New Zealand have six ODIs scheduled ahead of the World Cup in India - three against England and three against Bangladesh and Milne is expected to miss at least half of them. The development came after his injury was confirmed post scans following experiencing tightness in a training session.

Fast bowler Ben Lister, however, has been added in the New Zealand squad for the remainder of the England series. Speaking on the injury, New Zealand coach Gary Stead said: "We have short turnarounds between these matches and want to try and look after the players as much as possible with the upcoming schedule.

"With Ben already here in England, it meant we could have him join the squad at short notice without the recovery time of a bowler joining from New Zealand mid-series. Ben impressed us in the UAE and [in the] warm-up matches in England, and will continue to learn being around some senior players in the touring group," he added.

Also Read: Ex-USA coach Bruce Arena resigns from MLS after probe into 'insensitive and inappropriate remarks' New Zealand have six ODIs scheduled ahead of the World Cup in India - three against England and three against Bangladesh and Milne is expected to miss at least half of them. Notably, Lister was expected to play for Kent in County Championship. The pacer had made his international debut against Pakistan earlier this year but has not been included for the upcoming Bangladesh tour. New Zealand fast bowler out of England series with injury, doubtful for World Cup as well

Mitchell Santner starred with the ball before Tim Seifert led the way with the bat as New Zealand beat England by six wickets at Trent Bridge on Tuesday to end a four-match Twenty20 series all square at 2-2.

When Jonny Bairstow was making a quickfire 73, to give the Black Caps a reminder of his stunning Test century against them in Nottingham last year, T20 world champions England were on course for a huge total.

But, with England white-ball captain Jos Buttler officially rested from the game, New Zealand took four wickets for 35 runs -- with left-arm spinner Santner returning fine figures of 3-30.

New Zealand controlled their chase, with Seifert making 48 and the in-form Glenn Phillips 42 before Mark Chapman's unbeaten 40 completed a comfortable win with 16 balls left.

England will now face New Zealand -- the team they beat in the 2019 50-over World Cup final -- in a four-match one-day international series starting in Cardiff on Friday as they continue their preparations ahead of a title defence in India starting next month.&nbsp;

The first two matches of the T20 series witnessed two dominant England wins, by seven wickets and 95 runs, before New Zealand hit back with an equally emphatic 74-run success at Edgbaston on Sunday.

<h2>'Aggressive options'</h2>

"We were far from our best in the first two games and the last two have been closer to what this side is about," New Zealand captain Tim Southee said at the presentation ceremony.

"They (England) got off to a great start tonight but we knew that if we kept taking wickets it was the best way to slow them down. We were trying to be smart and make them take aggressive options."

Stand-in England captain Moeen Ali said: "They (New Zealand) bowled really well but we just lost some momentum after the powerplay so that was disappointing."

He added: "They had a brilliant start with the bat too and then we couldn't wrestle it back."

England were 105-1 off 11 overs after Moeen won the toss.

But Santner led New Zealand's fightback in the field with a haul that included the prize scalp of Bairstow in an innings where the next highest score was the 26 made by both Dawid Malan and Liam Livingstone.

Bairstow dominated the powerplay with three legside sixes, pacemen Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson the bowlers to suffer.

But his assault ended when he failed to clear long-on after lofting Santner down the ground.&nbsp;

Ish Sodhi, another of New Zealand's spinners, induced ring star Harry Brook -- left out of England's provisional World Cup squad -- to hole out for four before Santner removed both Malan and Moeen in the 16th over.

Bairstow suffered a shoulder injury while batting with the result that regular white-ball keeper Buttler was drafted in as emergency cover behind the stumps.

Seifert hammered Brydon Carse and Luke Wood for sixes before leaping teenage leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed had him caught and bowled in a return of 2-27 on his return to the team.

But Chapman made sure of New Zealand's victory.

New Zealand overcome Bairstow masterclass to level series with win in 4th T20I

Kane&nbsp;Williamson&nbsp;will captain New Zealand at next month's World Cup after making "sufficient progress" in his recovery from a knee injury, the country's cricket board said on Monday. Williamson&nbsp;underwent surgery after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the Indian Premier League in early April, which had cast doubt over his participation in the tournament.

The 33-year-old had been given two weeks to prove his fitness for the Oct. 5- Nov. 19 50-overs World Cup in India. "Williamson&nbsp;has made sufficient progress in his recovery to allow him to be included in the squad for the tournament starting in October," NZC said in a statement.

New Zealand coach Gary Stead praised&nbsp;Williamson's "phenomenal dedication", adding: "He's left no stone unturned in trying to get back playing cricket at the highest level. We are delighted to be in a place to select him.

"At the same time, he's also kept perspective about his recovery and hasn't wanted to rush or force his way back too early. As we've previously said, it's great he wants to play cricket for New Zealand in the long term." However, Stead stressed that there was no clear timeline for&nbsp;Williamson's return.

"As we've said throughout this process we want to give&nbsp;Kane&nbsp;every bit of available time to aid his recovery," Stead said. "The World Cup is not a short tournament and we will continue to monitor his progress over the next month ahead of the first tournament match."

The NZC added that the rest of the squad would be announced on Sept. 11. New Zealand play England in the final Twenty20 international of a four-match series on Tuesday, before facing the same opponents in a four-match one-day international series.

Kane Williamson set to captain New Zealand in CWC 2023 after progress in injury recovery

New Zealand cricket's new chief executive Scott Weenink is a 'Test cricket romantic' and will be looking to promote the same while ensuring that the Black Caps play revenue games as well. Weenink, 50, took over David White on August 30 and made the comments at his first press conference in Auckland.

"I'm a Test cricket romantic but also I see Test cricket as being key to keeping players playing for New Zealand," Weenink said. "I think if we didn't have Test cricket, it'd be much harder to keep them interested in that. They'd simply, you know, come back and play an ICC [event]. So absolutely, I'll be looking to try and promote Test cricket while balancing the fact that we do need to play the higher revenue parts of the game as well.

Speaking on being offered the role, Weenink said it was an 'honour' and that his key responsibility will be to maintain the relationship New Zealand cricket has with the community.

"It was a great honour to be offered the position," he said. "I love sport and cricket in particular, and I also love the business of sport - so this seemed like an ideal role. There's a finely balanced, symbiotic relationship between community and high performance cricket in New Zealand and one of my key responsibilities is to ensure that's maintained and sustained into the future."

Weenink, a former first-class cricketer from Wellington, is also the head of New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NCPA). He will, however, be stepping down from the post of NCPA president.

Speaking on his appointment, NZ Cricket Board chairman Martin Snedden said, "Scott understands cricket. He understands its context in New Zealand; where it's come from, where it is now, and where it should be going."&nbsp;

New Zealand are currently touring England for four T20Is and as many ODIs as well.

New Zealand cricket's new 'Test romantic' chief executive Scott Weenink aims to keep red-ball games relevant

Ace Kiwi seamer Trent Boult is committed to remaining available for selection for the 2023 Men's 50-over World Cup in India later this year despite not signing the central contract with New Zealand Cricket. His fellow seamer Adam Milne signed his first contract in five years.

It comes as a boost for the New Zealand side heading forward, who reached the finals on the past two occasions - having lost both times, against Australia in 2015 and England in 2019.

Boult, last year in August, alongside veteran batter Martin Guptill and out-of-favour all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme, decided against signing the central contract to continue playing franchise cricket around the world and spend more time with family. Upon mutually agreeing to the same, a deal was cut contrary to this, with both parties open to see Boult remaining committed to playing for the country, at least in mega-events.

On the other hand, right-hand express pace Adam Milne has signed his first central contract in five years. Following his remarkable run in the international cricket the past season, where he picked 24 wickets in total between 11 T20Is and five ODIs, Milne even picked a five-for against Sri Lanka in a T20I game in Dunedin this April.&nbsp;

Effective with the new ball and even at the death, Milne is set to get an extended run considering two ICC World Cups in one year from now - the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.

“Adam’s worked exceptionally hard and has shown good resilience over the past few years to be in a position to earn this contract offer," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. “He’s always been a top-class bowler, and we were impressed by his consistent contributions in the recent home summer and tour of Pakistan.”&nbsp;

While Finn Allen, Mark Chapman, and Blair Tickner all got retained after joining as mid-year contracted players, Ajaz Patel - only the third bowler ever to pick 10 wickets in an innings, was named on the list.

NZ captain Kane Williamson opens up on knee injury, chances of featuring in ODI World Cup

New Zealand seamer Trent Boult didn't sign the central contract with NZC for the current tenure as he wanted to play in the T20 Leagues around the world and spend more time with his family.&nbsp;

However, with the 2023 World Cup scheduled to begin in less than three months, NZC and Boult have cut a 'flexi' deal between them that might see the left-armer remain available and play ahead of the contracted players and earn a bit more also - a situation the former head coach Mike Hesson feels uncomfortable with.

Speaking with Sky Sports, Hesson expressed his displeasure over Boult getting an unfair advantage over centrally contracted players who have put in hard yards to be here in the first place. "If you want the IPL and two or three or four other tournaments as well, you probably can't have everything, and that's a decision you've got to make at the start of the year, and I just think the flexi contracts just make it a bit untidy," Hesson said on Sky Sports. "It just gets really untidy when you've got 20 contracts, or however many is on that [NZC] list now and then you have an extra one [for Boult], and next year you might have three extra ones and."

Boult, who also appeared for the Blackcaps in T20 World Cup last year, is likely to get a go-ahead for this year's WC. Hesson feels while it could be a win-win situation for both Boult and NZC, it remains unfair to the current breed of players who are also vying for a spot in the side for the World Cup.

"This flexi contract, it might work really well for Trent, and it might actually work well for New Zealand Cricket, but it does open up a whole can of worms," Hesson added.

<h2>Boult wants some extra dollar now</h2>

Alongside Hesson, New Zealand's former assistant coach Craig McMillan shared the same views. McMillan said though he respects Boult for his services to New Zealand cricket, this current situation around the 'flexi' contract doesn't sit well with him either.

"It seemed only 12 months ago Trent Boult was more than happy to make his decision to move away from international cricket and take the riches of the T20 franchises around the world, and you couldn't bemoan him that," McMillan said.

"He'd had a wonderful career for New Zealand and been a great servant and now almost wants a little bit of a dollar each way. It's a difficult one. It doesn't sit overly well with me, and I'm sure it doesn't sit with some of the other players within the setup who are doing the hard yards then have to move back [when they return]," McMillan added.

New Zealand seamer Trent Boult didn't sign the central contract with NZC for the current tenure as he wanted to play in the T20 Leagues around the world and spend more time with his family. Skipper Babar Azam smashed a magnificent century while pace bowler Haris Rauf took four wickets as Pakistan beat New Zealand by 38 runs in the second T20 international in Lahore on Saturday.

Azam, who fell for just nine in his 100th T20I on Friday, compensated with a brisk 58-ball 101 not out to lift Pakistan to a solid 192-4 in their 20 overs.

Rauf, who took a career best 4-18 in Pakistan's 88-run win in the series opener, finished with 4-27 to restrict New Zealand to 154-7.

Pakistan now lead the five-match series 2-0 with the last three matches in Lahore (April 17) and Rawalpindi (April 20 and 24).

"I am very happy&nbsp;to perform in this match," said Azam, who is now the joint most successful T20I captain with 42 wins, alongside England's Eoin Morgan and Afghanistan's Asghar Afghan.

"I had two good partnerships and then our bowling was once again excellent. We have got experienced and exciting young bowlers who gave us back-to-back wins."

Mark Chapman scored a battling 65 not out for New Zealand featuring four fours and as many sixes, but lost partners at regular intervals after the tourists made a decent start.

Chad Bowes (26) and skipper Tom Latham (19) put on 44 for the first wicket in 6.2 overs, but as the asking rate soared New Zealand's chase lost steam.

"We have been there or thereabouts but weren't able to finish the innings off, both with the ball and bat," said Latham.

"When Babar plays like that, you tip your hat off."

Azam was the mainstay of the Pakistan innings after he won the toss and chose to bat.

He smashed a six and two fours in the last over to reach his third T20I century, becoming only the sixth batter to do so in the shortest format at international level.

Azam put on 99 for the opening wicket with Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 50 off 34 balls.

Azam, whose knock included 11 fours and three sixes, then added 87 for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar Ahmed, who finished 33 not out as the home team added 65 runs in the last five overs.

After removing Rizwan in the 11th over, New Zealand slowed Pakistan's charge as Matt Henry then dismissed Fakhar Zaman for a duck and finished with 2-29.

Saim Ayub also fell without scoring and Imad Wasim was out for two as Pakistan lost four wickets for just six runs in the space of 14 balls.

Azam started the 20th over on 84 and looked like he would end short of a century, but he took the attack to James Neesham -- dispatching the last ball over cover for a four to reach his ninth hundred in all T20 cricket.

Only Chris Gayle of the West Indies has hit more hundreds in the format with 22, while India's Rohit Sharma leads the T20I chart with four tons.

Pak vs NZ, 2nd T20I: Babar Azam ton, Haris Rauf four-for as host beat Kiwis by 38 runs

Tim Seifert was the match-winner for the second straight game as New Zealand clinched the T20 series against Sri Lanka with a tense four-wicket victory in Queenstown on Saturday.

Seifert blasted a career-high 88 off 48 balls to fire the Black Caps to 183-6 from 19.5 overs after the tourists had posted 182-6 in the third and final game at John Davies Oval.

The opener struck 10 fours and three sixes in an innings that bore many of the hallmarks of his unbeaten 79 when New Zealand levelled the series at Dunedin on Wednesday.

Captain Tom Latham provided the only meaningful support with 31 off 23 and New Zealand's middle order nearly conspired to lose the game after Seifert departed with four overs remaining.

Needing to score at little more than a run-a-ball at that stage, the Black Caps stuttered.

Needing 10 runs to win off the final over bowled by Lahiru Kumara (3-38), Mark Chapman struck a six off the first ball before he was the first of three New Zealand wickets to fall.

With two still needed off the last two deliveries, Rachin Ravindra held his nerve to find a gap in the outfield and secure the 2-1 series win.

Latham conceded the run chase should not have become so tight at the death.

"They put us under pressure so it was good to see the way the guys responded to that," Latham said.

"The way Timmy Seifert went out there and played was really important but obviously it wasn't ideal going down to the last couple of balls.

"I'd say we always had it under control though."

It completes a disappointing tour for Sri Lanka, who lost the Test and ODI series by the same 2-0 scoreline but were more competitive in the shortest format.

Captain Dasun Shanaka said his team adjusted gradually to New Zealand conditions and suggested Sri Lankan cricket officials should take careful note.

"I think it's about preparation. We should make sure when we come here again, we should come at least two weeks, three weeks before we play," Shanaka said.

"Once we got into the T20 series we started looking a different team."

Sri Lanka gave themselves a shot at victory after Kusal Mendis struck a rapid 73 off 48 balls, taking full advantage after being dropped by Daryl Mitchell at slip when on 10.

The opener-wicketkeeper went on to hit six fours and five sixes in his 12th half-century, falling just short of his career-high score of 79.

Having been asked to bat, Mendis was the dominant figure in an opening stand of 76 with Pathum Nissanka (25 off 25), before putting on a further 46 with Kusal Perera (33 off 21).

Wickets fell rapidly over the closing overs, preventing the tourists from going close to 200.

Seifert has not been included in New Zealand's squad for the white ball tour of Pakistan beginning on Friday as he is expecting the arrival of his first child.

Sri Lanka's next assignment is a two-Test home series against Ireland, beginning on April 16.

NS vs SL 3rd T20I: Tim Seifert powers New Zealand to series win over Sri Lanka with match-winning 88-run knock

New Zealand beat England by just one run in a second-Test thriller on Tuesday to draw the series despite having been forced to follow-on in Wellington.

New Zealand set England a target of 258 runs to win, but the visitors were all out for 256 in dramatic scenes as the two-Test series finished 1-1.

Neil Wagner took the decisive wicket of James Anderson as New Zealand wicketkeeper Tom Blundell pulled off a diving catch to make history.

"Amazing achievement, hats off to everyone, everyone kept fighting." said Wagner, who finished with 4-62.&nbsp;

"That's the characteristics of this team, they played well, credit where it's due, but we found a way of contributing."&nbsp;
Blundell was delighted to hang on to the tumbling catch.&nbsp;

"Saw it well and luckily it went in clean. Pretty happy," said the wicketkeeper.

It was only the fourth occasion a team has won a Test after being asked to follow-on and the first time for New Zealand. England managed it twice, against Australia in 1894 and 1981, while India beat Australia in 2001.

It was the first time England have lost a Test after forcing their opponents to follow on.

A topsy-turvy Test match swung back to New Zealand during the final two gripping days. England were on course for victory after declaring their first innings on 435-8, then bowling out New Zealand for 209.

Former skipper Kane Williamson dragged New Zealand back into the Test with a superb 132 in their second innings 483 on Monday, leaving England 258 to win.

Having resumed at 48-1, England wobbled Tuesday morning by losing four wickets for just 27 runs before Joe Root steadied the ship by steering his team to 168-5 at lunch.

As England chipped away at their target, Root's partnership with Ben Stokes ended on 121 when England's captain was caught at square leg.

The pressure on England intensified dramatically after Root went for 95 with England still 57 runs short.

Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes kept England in the fight with a cavalier 35, surviving a dropped catch by Michael Bracewell before clubbing three fours to the boundary.

After Foakes was caught by Wagner in the deep off Southee, it left the last pair James Anderson and Jack Leach still needing seven runs for victory.

Anderson clubbed a four to get within two runs before Wagner and Blundell combined to land the knockout punch.

Kane Williamson, on Thursday (December 15), announced that he is stepping aside from New Zealand Test captaincy. New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC) has even named his replacement, with pacer Tim Southee set to take over from Williamson in whites.&nbsp;

Kane Williamson, on Thursday (December 15), announced that he is stepping aside from New Zealand Test captaincy. Williamson has taken the big decision after being in-charge of the Test line-up for more than six years. He, however, will remain the captain of the ODI and T20I side. New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC) has even named his replacement, with pacer Tim Southee set to take over from Williamson in whites. The 32-year-old Williamson said in a statement, "Captaining the Black Caps in Test cricket has been an incredibly special honour." Meanwhile, Williamson's successor Southee said, "It's been a surreal few days and it's just a massive honour to be appointed as Test captain. I love Test cricket, it's the ultimate challenge and I'm really excited by the opportunity to lead the team in this format." New Zealand all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme announced his retirement from international cricket on Wednesday. De Grandhomme, 36, made the decision to bring down the curtains on an impressive international career after discussions this week with New Zealand Cricket — which has agreed to release him from his central contract.

The Zimbabwean-born Kiwi said a range of factors had played a part in his decision, not least his struggles with injury and the increasing competition for places in all three formats.

"I accept that I am not getting any younger and that the training is getting harder, particularly with the injuries. I also have a growing family and am trying to understand what my future looks like post-cricket. All of this has been on my mind over the past few weeks," said the all-rounder in a statement.

"I have been fortunate enough to have had the opportunity to play for the BLACKCAPS since debuting in 2012 and I am proud of my international career — but I feel this is the right time to finish."

De Grandhomme departs the international stage with an impressive record, particularly in the Test arena; his 29 matches realising 1432 runs at 38.70, including centuries against the West Indies and South Africa, and 49 wickets at 32.95 — including six for 41 on debut against Pakistan.

A measure of his influence in the Test environment is that he featured in 18 wins, playing a key role in the BLACKCAPS inaugural ICC World Test Championship campaign, which ended with a victory over India in the final at Southampton.

De Grandhomme also proved valuable in the Kiwi ODI side, in 45 outings scoring 742 runs at a strike rate of 106.15 and taking 30 wickets at 41.00 with the ball, as the side reached a No.1 world ranking, and qualified for the final of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

In that tournament, he starred with a 47-ball 60 in a pulsating victorious chase against South Africa, scored 64 against Pakistan, and bowled superbly in the final against England, taking one for 25 off his 10 overs.

The powerful all-rounder also played in 41 T20Is, scoring 505 runs at a strike-rate of 138.35 and taking 12 wickets at 38.41 (economy rate of 8.61). De Grandhomme said he had cherished his time playing for the BLACKCAPS and sharing in such a successful time for New Zealand cricket.

Kiwi pacer Trent Boult steps out of his central contract. Fuels retirement talks

Ben Stokes was the difference between England and New Zealand in the 2019 ODI World Cup final, at Lord's. After 100 overs were completed, there was nothing separating both sides before a Super Over was held. Even the Super Over saw both teams ending with identical scores before Stokes-starrer England won in terms of boundary count.

Stokes' 84 not out ensured England ended at 241 all-out, in pursuit of 242, and even the Super Over saw both teams ending at 15 runs apiece. The all-rounder also chipped in with eight vital runs in the Super Over. Nonetheless, Ross Taylor -- former Kiwi great -- has revealed an interesting tale that Stokes -- whose father is a Kiwi -- could've played for NZ had it not been due to New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board's&nbsp;unfortunate decision taken some years back.

"He was 18 or 19 and very much a Kiwi,’’ Taylor wrote in his autobiography. "Over a Guinness, I asked him if he wanted to come and play in New Zealand. He was keen so I sent a message to New Zealand Cricket CEO Justin Vaughan saying this guy Stokes was a really good young cricketer and interested in playing for New Zealand."

"Vaughan replied along the lines that he could start playing domestic cricket and we’d see where it went. I went back, saying we’d have to offer him more than that because he wouldn’t be interested if it meant starting on the bottom rung of the ladder. Obviously, it didn’t come to anything," he added.

Taylor further wrote: "Ben was sincere about playing for New Zealand, but NZC would’ve had to have acted swiftly and decisively and given him some pretty solid assurances, which Vaughan clearly wasn’t prepared to do.’’

Thus, had NZC provided Stokes more stability, the current England Test captain would have been playing for New Zealand in today's times. For the unversed, he was born in NZ on June 4, 1991, and is now hailed as one of the finest all-rounders in the modern era.

'He was keen': Ross Taylor reveals Ben Stokes was eager to play for NZ, shares interesting tale

New Zealand pacer Trent Boult's decision to snub New Zealand Cricket (NZC)'s central contract has left many surprised. Boult was released from the central contract list by NZC on Wednesday (August 10) at his own request as the fast bowler has decided to spend more time with his family. Boult's participation in international cricket will now be limited as he is not a centrally-contracted player anymore.

While his decision has sparked rumours of early retirement, Boult will not regularly feature across all three formats for New Zealand. His participation will be reduced to a significant extent as the board will prefer players with central contracts over the left-arm pacer.

The release from the central contract has also put Boult's participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 in doubt. The left-arm fast bowler has been one of the vital cogs in the New Zealand pace attack over the years and played an instrumental role in helping his team reach the final of the T20 World Cup 2021 last year.

David White, the CEO of New Zealand Cricket is however, hopeful Boult will be part of the Kiwi squad for the showpiece event in Australia later this year. White said Boult is more likely to feature only in global tournaments now and might not take part in bilateral cricket.

"I’d imagine that he will be selected for the T20 World Cup in Australia because he’s been a big part of our plans and preparation for that. He knows he will be playing a significantly less amount of international cricket," White was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz.

"We’ve said to him that, in the future, priority for selection will be given to centrally contracted Black Caps and domestic players. Although, we will, on a case-by-case basis, consider him.

"I think it’s fair to say there’s more likelihood of him participating in global events than bilateral cricket. He’s just found it very demanding with a young family and wife he wants to spend more time with," he added.

33-year-old Boult has so far played 78 Tests, 93 ODIs and 44 T20Is for New Zealand in his international career with a total of 548 wickets in all three formats combined. Will Trent Boult play T20 World Cup after snubbing central contract? NZC CEO David White responds

Former England wicket-keeper batter Steve Davis had become the first cricketer to publicly come out as gay. Now, New Zealand's former pacer Heath Davis has also followed suit. The ex-Kiwi speedster, who represented the national side in 5 Tests and 11 ODIs, recently came out of the closet and revealed that he is gay.

Recently, Davis shared his side of the story and revealed how sometimes his off-field struggles impacted his performances on the 22-yard cricket strip.&nbsp;"The first tour to England [in 1994], I was starting to discover myself, was going to a few bars and things privately to see what life was… well, you are on the other side of the world, no one is going to know you. I left that part of my life there. There was a lot of that, just keeping your personal life separate," Davis stated in a documentary series for The Spinoff called "Scratched: Aotearoa's Lost Sporting Legends".

He further asserted, "It was lonely. Going to saunas and seedy places to get sex because you didn't want to be seen and that sort of stuff. I had systems and people in place where I could talk about these things but I didn't feel comfortable."
