New Zealand captain Kane Williamson may miss the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa at home, said a report by stuff.co.nz. Williamson has been out of action since the Kanpur Test against India in November 2021 as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury. 
 
"While Kane Williamson is making useful progress in his rehabilitation from an elbow injury which has ruled him out of the last three tests for the Black Caps, the Test series against the Proteas starting in Christchurch on February 17 is likely to be regarded as too early to push him into top-flight action," said the report. 
 
It is now expected that opener Tom Latham, who captained the team in Tests against Bangladesh, will continue in the role for the Tests against South Africa. The squad, which will be announced later in the week, will be the first time the Blackcaps will feature in Test cricket minus Williamson and a retired Ross Taylor since January 2008.

It`s understood the two Tests may provide too taxing a workload for the 31-year-old at this stage and potentially risk his fitness for the rest of a busy year for the Black Caps, which includes a three-Test series away to England in June and the Twenty20 World Cup starting in Australia in October," further said the report. 
 
Williamson has been troubled by elbow injury since early 2021, when he had to sit out of the three ODIs against Bangladesh in March. Later in June, Williamson again was ruled out of the Birmingham Test against England due to the elbow issue.

Taylor on Thursday confirmed that the current summer will be his last for the BlackCaps, marking the end of a remarkable 16-year international career. 
 
According to New Zealand Cricket (NZC), Taylor signalled his intentions on the eve of the Test series against Bangladesh, starting in Mount Maunganui on Saturday, confirming the two-match series would be his last in the red-ball cricket, before bowing out in the ODIs against Australia and Netherlands later this summer.

"But all good things must come to an end and the timing feels right for me. I want to thank my family, friends and all those who have helped me get to this point. 
 
"There'll be plenty of time for more thank-yous and reflections later in the season -- but for now I want all my energy and focus to be on preparing and performing for the BlackCaps this summer." 
 
Taylor said he would remain available for Central Districts until the end of the season before making a decision on whether to continue playing domestic cricket. 
 
Taylor has scored the most runs for NZ in Tests (7584) and is one of only four New Zealanders to play 100 Tests -- at 110 Tests, he joins Daniel Vettori 112, Stephen Fleming 111 and Brendon McCullum 101 on the list. 
 
Coach Gary Stead told New Zealand Cricket that Taylor would undoubtedly bow out as one of New Zealand's greats.

"The mental and physical well-being of our players and support staff remains our highest priority and this is even more critical given the times we are currently living in. 
 
"We know there are increasing concerns about travelling to the region and believe that going ahead will add further pressure to a playing group who have already coped with a long period of operating in restricted COVID environments." 
 
The ECB added that the men`s team touring under such conditions would not be ideal preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup next month. 
 
"We understand that this decision will be a significant disappointment to the PCB, who have worked tirelessly to host the return of international cricket in their country," it added. "We are sincerely sorry for the impact this will have on cricket in Pakistan and emphasise an ongoing commitment to our main touring plans there for 2022."

New Zealand's cricket squad arrived in Pakistan Saturday for their first tour in 18 years, with batting coach Thilan Samaraweera returning to the country where he was shot in 2009.

Samaraweera was part of the Sri Lankan team that was attacked by militants near the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore in 2009.

Samaraweera was shot in the left thigh and took three months after surgery to get back on the field. He has been working with the New Zealand team since 2019.

In the last six years Pakistan have hosted Zimbabwe, South Africa, Bangladesh, the West Indies and Sri Lanka as has security improved in the country.

New Zealand will play three one-day internationals (September 17, 19, 21) in Rawalpindi, and five Twenty20 internationals (September 25, 26,&nbsp;29, October 1 and 3) in Lahore.

The current New Zealand squad is weakened by the absence of eight of their top players, including skipper Kane Williamson who will be playing in the rescheduled Indian Premier League in the UAE from next week.

"For us, it's just about going there and trying to adapt to conditions," Latham added.

"So, another opportunity for the group and they're all looking forward to it," he added.

Five members of the T20 squad -- Todd Astle, Mark Chapman, Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell and Ish Sodhi -- are expected to arrive later on Sunday.
