Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been appointed head coach of England`s test team, the country`s cricket board (ECB) said on Thursday. McCullum replaced Chris Silverwood who left the role in February after England were thrashed 4-0 in the Ashes in Australia, with Paul Collingwood stepping in as a caretaker coach.

McCullum, 40, is currently in charge of Indian Premier League side Kolkata Knight Riders but the ECB said he will be in place to start his role when New Zealand visit for a three-test series starting at Lord`s on June 2. "We are delighted to confirm Brendon as England men`s test head coach. It has been a real privilege to get to know him and understand his views and vision for the game," ECB managing director Rob Key said in a statement.

"He has a recent history of changing cricket culture and environments for the better, and I believe he is the person to do that for England`s red-ball cricket. "We were incredibly fortunate to have a seriously strong list of quality candidates for the post, with Brendon demonstrating he was our number one choice."
Former South Africa and India head coach Gary Kirsten had been linked with the role and Collingwood was also considered.

McCullum played the last of his 101 tests at Christchurch in 2016 against Australia, where he hit the fastest ever century in the format (54 balls). He finished his career with 6,453 runs including 12 hundreds and 31 half-centuries.

He will be tasked with working alongside newly-appointed test captain Ben Stokes to get England out of a slump after the team won only one of their last 17 matches, with Key describing the pairing as a "formidable coach and captain partnership".

"In taking this role on, I am acutely aware of the significant challenges the team faces at present, and I strongly believe in my ability to help the team emerge as a stronger force once we`ve confronted them head-on," McCullum said.

"Ben Stokes is the perfect character to inspire change around him, and I look forward to working closely with him to build a successful unit around us."

Ross Taylor scored only 14 runs in his final ODI match but more importantly pouched the catch to dismiss the final Netherlands batter and helped New Zealand romp to a 115-run victory and sweep the three-match series 3-0 here on Monday.

The Blackcaps rode on centuries by opener Martin Guptill (106 - 123b, 11x4, 2x6) and Will Young (120 - 112b, 6x4, 4x6) to post a mammoth 333/8 in their allotted 50 overs.

In reply, the Netherlands were bowled out for 218 in 42.3 overs, seamer Matt Henry claiming 4/36 at Seddon Park here.

New Zealand`s sixth straight win in the ICC Men`s Cricket World Cup Super League helped them leapfrog Pakistan to the eighth position on the virtue of a superior Net Run Rate (NRR). The Netherlands remain at the bottom of the 13-team table with 25 points from 10 games.

New Zealand consolidated their top position in the ICC Men`s ODI Player Rankings, while the Netherlands remain at the 14th spot, according to a report on the ICC website.

Earlier, Taylor managed 14 off 16 in his final outing, being dismissed caught and bowled by Logan van Beek. That was after Martin Guptill and Will Young`s 203-run second-wicket stand laid the foundation for New Zealand`s impressive first-innings effort of 333/8.

"It's the nature of this tournament (on losing toss), we have games coming quickly with very less turnaround time. Grateful to the ground staff for getting a game of nearly 50 overs, to Bangladesh for coming up and the umpires for getting the game on. It was easier to manipulate the field against pace, place it into pockets in the corners," said Sophie Devine in a post-match presentation.

"I was disappointed at not cashing in, it was a brilliant batting strip, as it's always been in Dunedin. The outfield was a bit slow, but Bates was so good. We know the competition is very tough, happy to pick the win here and we'll go on to play against India next, we have played them last month and know what's coming up," she added.

Chasing 141, New Zealand openers Sophie Devine and Suzie Bates put on 36 runs inside the first seven overs.

However, Bangladesh got the much-needed breakthrough in the seventh over as Salma Khatun bowled Devine (14) and this brought Amelia Kerr to the middle.

WWC 2022: 'We know what's coming up' - NZ skipper Sophie Devine ahead of big clash vs India

Hayley Matthews smashed a brilliant century to help the West Indies to a dramatic three-run victory over tournament hosts New Zealand in the opening match of the 12th Women's World Cup at Mount Maunganui on Friday.

The all-rounder, moved up the order to open the batting in place of Rashada Williams, took the game to New Zealand from the start and pummelled 16 fours and a booming six in her 128-ball 119.

The 23-year-old Barbadian returned to take 2-41 with her offspin and set back the New Zealanders in their bid to chase down 260 runs for victory in front of a sparse, COVID-19 restricted crowd.

Sloppy West Indies fielding gave Sophie Devine at least two lives and the New Zealand captain took full advantage with a battling 108 that kept the hosts in with a sniff of victory.

Seamer Chinelle Henry finally ousted the home captain with a brilliant juggled catch off her own bowling to set up a dramatic final five over under the Bay Oval lights.

Katey Martin (44) and Jess Kerr (25) needed six runs from the final six deliveries but Deandra Dottin, bowling her first over of the match, dismissed them both and ran out Hannah Rowe on the penultimate ball to leave New Zealand 256 all out.

"I thought we were right in it until the last over," said Devine.

"You don't get much more clutch than a bowler coming in in the 50th over and doing what Dottin did. So full credit to them but we've got to move on quickly."

Matthews said coach Courtney Walsh had called her on Thursday and told her she would be opening in place of Williams, who was ruled out of the match by concussion protocols.

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson desperate to get fit as he returns to training

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson may miss the upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa at home, said a report by stuff.co.nz. Williamson has been out of action since the Kanpur Test against India in November 2021 as he continues his recovery from an elbow injury.

"While Kane Williamson is making useful progress in his rehabilitation from an elbow injury which has ruled him out of the last three tests for the Black Caps, the Test series against the Proteas starting in Christchurch on February 17 is likely to be regarded as too early to push him into top-flight action," said the report.

It is now expected that opener Tom Latham, who captained the team in Tests against Bangladesh, will continue in the role for the Tests against South Africa. The squad, which will be announced later in the week, will be the first time the Blackcaps will feature in Test cricket minus Williamson and a retired Ross Taylor since January 2008.

"But New Zealand Cricket would continue to take a cautious approach, wanting to slowly ease him along with his recovery to ensure there are no setbacks. It`s understood the two Tests may provide too taxing a workload for the 31-year-old at this stage and potentially risk his fitness for the rest of a busy year for the Black Caps, which includes a three-Test series away to England in June and the Twenty20 World Cup starting in Australia in October," further said the report.

Williamson has been troubled by elbow injury since early 2021, when he had to sit out of the three ODIs against Bangladesh in March. Later in June, Williamson again was ruled out of the Birmingham Test against England due to the elbow issue.

Williamson then captained New Zealand to winning the World Test Championship in Southampton and being runners-up in the Men`s T20 World Cup at the UAE in October-November.

But the elbow injury`s recurrence resulting in late pull-out before the second Test against India in Mumbai meant that Williamson, 31, is now giving full attention to recovering from the injury.

On December 20, the Amazon Prime Video made another giant leap as it announced that it will start exclusively streaming cricket matches. The popular OTT platform have forged a partnership with the New Zealand Cricket and will live stream matches of the Black Caps starting January 2022.

In an exclusive interaction with www.wionnews.com's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo, spin-bowling all-rounder Mitchell Santner was thrilled to bits seeing the new alliance and said, "That's awesome. To see NZ cricket in another platform is outstanding. We have some diehard Indian fans who are keen to watch the Kiwis play Bangladesh at home, they can tune in early hours."

Further, Santner also opened up on India-NZ cricketing rivalry, which has been a talking point in the 22-yard cricket strip in recent times. With the NZC's matches now set to be live streamed on the OTT platform, the popularity of the Kiwis' line-up will be bolstered further. Hence, Santner spilled the beans on the Ind-NZ cricketing relations and said, "Yeah, it will only get better. We both fight pretty hard on the field but outside, everyone is pretty keen to sit down and have relaxing conversations (off the field). We are very lucky to play in the IPL and to share a change room with guys you have grown up watching is pretty cool. To play under MS Dhoni is been a massive one for me. To also bowl alongside Ravindra Jadeja is not a bad thing as well, being a left-arm spinner myself. "

Santner also recalled New Zealand's 2019 ODI World Cup final loss at the hands of England. While the contest was tied even in the Super Over, the Black Caps lost in terms of boundary count. Recalling how the Kiwis learned from their experience and used it to good effect to clinch the inaugural WTC finale, Santner said, "I think being there personally was very tough to swallow. you come so close....you can obviously look back at few different moments and can say 'this could have happened or that', but we channalised that (in the right way) and served as a motivation to be there and go one step further to beat India (in the WTC final). We were lucky enough to play two Tests against England (before the WTC finale) and was a big help as well."

NZ's dream run continued in the 2021 T20 World Cup. The Black Caps lost their tournament-opener to Pakistan but defeated India, Afghanistan, Scotland, Namibia and England (in the semi-finals) to book a place in the summit clash, where they lost to Australia by 8 wickets.

Santner opened up on how NZ have become a dominant team across formats and have done exceedingly well in recent ICC tournaments. "I think the depth we have got at the moment is definitely better than what it has been in two years. We are quite confident of the players we have got. We had two big games in Pakistan and India (talking about the T20 WC journey), we knew if we could win one of the two, we could have got some momentum throughout the tournament as T20s is such a massive momentum game. The results have shown that it is going right for us," the 29-year-old concluded.

Taylor acknowledged it wasn't an easy decision to make but felt the time was right.

"It's been an amazing journey and I feel incredibly fortunate to have represented my country for as long as I have," he was quoted as saying by NZC.

"It's been such a privilege to play with and against some of the greats of the game and to have created so many memories and friendships along the way.

"But all good things must come to an end and the timing feels right for me. I want to thank my family, friends and all those who have helped me get to this point.

"There'll be plenty of time for more thank-yous and reflections later in the season -- but for now I want all my energy and focus to be on preparing and performing for the BlackCaps this summer."

Taylor said he would remain available for Central Districts until the end of the season before making a decision on whether to continue playing domestic cricket.

Taylor has scored the most runs for NZ in Tests (7584) and is one of only four New Zealanders to play 100 Tests -- at 110 Tests, he joins Daniel Vettori 112, Stephen Fleming 111 and Brendon McCullum 101 on the list.

Coach Gary Stead told New Zealand Cricket that Taylor would undoubtedly bow out as one of New Zealand's greats.

"Ross has always been a hugely respected member of the side and we`re thankful for his contributions to the BlackCaps over an incredible career.

"His skills and temperament as a batsman have been world-class and his ability to perform at such a high level for so long speaks volumes of his longevity and professionalism.

"His experience has held the side together on countless occasions and his catching record speaks for itself. There's no doubt we're going to miss him when he`s gone.

"Seeing him hit the winning runs in Southampton to help win our first ICC World title is a moment I will never forget and I'm sure it's the same for many of the fans.

"I know Ross is really focused on performing well in these remaining series and going out on the right note."

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson, who is unavailable for the Bangladesh series while he rehabilitates an elbow injury, said Taylor had given his all to the New Zealand team over the years, and wished him well for the upcoming two Tests.

"Ross has been such a successful and influential part of the BlackCaps in all three formats that it`s hard to imagine the side without him," he said.

"He's been a colossus in the Test team; one of the chief contributors to the success New Zealand has achieved over the past eight or nine years, and one of our few, true batting "greats".

Recalling how the Kiwis learned from their experience and used it to win the inaugural WTC finale, Santner said, "I think being there personally was very tough to swallow. you come so close....you can obviously look back at few different moments and can say 'this could have happened or that', but we channalised that (in the right way) and served as a motivation to be there and go one step further to beat India (in the WTC final).

The results have shown that it is going right for us," he stated.

EXCLUSIVE | We fight hard on field but have relaxing conversations off it: Santner on India-NZ rivalry

Former New Zealand cricketer Chris Cairns is going through a difficult phase ever since the stroke left him paralysed from the waist down as in a recent media interview he said that he doesn't know if he will ever walk again.

In August, the 51-year-old underwent an aortic dissection which is a serious condition in which a tear occurs in the inner layer of the body's main artery (aorta).

In such conditions, the blood rushes through the tear, causing the inner and middle layers of the aorta to split (dissect) and in case the blood goes through the outside aortic wall, aortic dissection is often deadly.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) were dealt with a massive blow when the Tom Latham-led New Zealand cricket team decide to abandon their Pakistan tour at the last minute, ahead of the series opener in Rawalpindi on September 17, citing security concerns.

Following this, the England Cricket Board (ECB) also followed New Zealand Cricket Board (NZC) and withdrew their men's and women's teams tour of Pakistan. Thus, it has led to severe consequences for Pakistan as the Asian country has suffered financially whereas their reputation has once again been hampered, just when the Men in Green were beginning to host international games at regular intervals.

Amid all this, many claimed that the BCCI had a part to play to influence NZC and ECB to cancel their respective Pakistan tours on security grounds. For the unversed, even Pakistan's minister of Information and Broadcasting, Fawad Chaudhry, claimed that the threat to New Zealand originated from India.

The New Zealand women's cricket team's security has been beefed up significantly, as a precautionary measure, after the England Cricket Board (ECB) received a 'threatening email' related to the NZC.

"The ECB have received a threatening email relating to NZC. "The White Ferns have now arrived in Leicester and, as a precaution, security around them has been boosted."

In the past few days, cricket has been dealt with severely due to security grounds. Already the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) are dealing with huge monetary loss following the pullout of England and NZ's men's cricket team's tours of the Asian country, at the last moment.

ECB receives 'threatening email' related to New Zealand Cricket, security beefed up for visiting team in England

England have withdrawn their men`s and women`s teams from next month`s tour of Pakistan, the country`s cricket board (ECB) said on Monday, three days after New Zealand abandoned their tour of the country amid security concerns.

The England teams were each scheduled to play two Twenty20 international matches on Oct. 13 and 14 in Rawalpindi, with the women`s side due to stay on for a three-match one-day international series from Oct. 17-21.

"The ECB Board convened this weekend to discuss these extra England Women`s and Men`s games in Pakistan and we can confirm that the Board has reluctantly decided to withdraw both teams from the October trip," the ECB said in a statement. "The mental and physical well-being of our players and support staff remains our highest priority and this is even more critical given the times we are currently living in.

"We know there are increasing concerns about travelling to the region and believe that going ahead will add further pressure to a playing group who have already coped with a long period of operating in restricted COVID environments."

The ECB added that the men`s team touring under such conditions would not be ideal preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup next month.

"We understand that this decision will be a significant disappointment to the PCB, who have worked tirelessly to host the return of international cricket in their country," it added. "We are sincerely sorry for the impact this will have on cricket in Pakistan and emphasise an ongoing commitment to our main touring plans there for 2022."

New Zealand abruptly abandoned their tour of Pakistan on Friday citing a security alert, in a massive blow to the South Asian country`s hopes of staging regular international cricket.

The tour was due to get underway with the first of three one-dayers in Rawalpindi on Friday but the New Zealand team did not travel to the stadium.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern backed New Zealand Cricket`s decision to end the tour.

International teams have largely refused to tour Pakistan since an attack by Islamist militants on the Sri Lanka team bus in Lahore in 2009 that killed six policemen and two civilians.

There are fears that New Zealand`s decision to go home will keep them away and Australia, who are scheduled to visit in February-March next year, also appear wary.

A Cricket Australia spokesperson said the organisation was monitoring the situation and would "talk with the relevant authorities once more information becomes known".

England call off Pakistan tour after New Zealand security scare

New Zealand's cricket squad arrived in Pakistan Saturday for their first tour in 18 years, with batting coach Thilan Samaraweera returning to the country where he was shot in 2009.

Samaraweera was part of the Sri Lankan team that was attacked by militants near the Gadaffi Stadium in Lahore in 2009.

Samaraweera was shot in the left thigh and took three months after surgery to get back on the field. He has been working with the New Zealand team since 2019.

Those attacks led international teams to refuse to tour in Pakistan, forcing them to play in neutral venues in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

New Zealand great John R. Reid, who led the nascent cricketing nation to their first Test victory in 1956, has died aged 92, officials said on Wednesday, hailing him as a "colossus".

Reid, who was New Zealand's oldest surviving Test cricketer and one of the best all-rounders of his day, captained the Black Caps in 34 Tests including their maiden win, against the West Indies.

The victory in Auckland ended a 26-year winless streak for New Zealand, who are now second in the Test rankings and were narrowly beaten finalists at last year's ODI World Cup in England.

"John R. Reid was New Zealand cricket's Colin Meads," said New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White, referring to the legendary All Blacks lock.

"He was, and will remain, a household name in this country, having helped pave the way for everything that has come in his wake."

Reid, a hard-hitting batsman and a brisk seam bowler, also led New Zealand to their second and third Test wins during the drawn series in South Africa in 1961-62.

After making his debut aged 19 on the 1949 tour of England, Reid played 58 Tests, scoring 3,428 runs at an average of 33.28, while taking 85 wickets at 33.35. His top score was 142 against South Africa in 1961.

No cause of death was announced. Reid, who was also a New Zealand selector and an ICC match referee, is survived by his wife, three grandchildren and four grandchildren.

New Zealand vs India, 1st T20I: Virat Kohli eyes another record, Williamson looks forward to bounce back after Aussie debacle

Spinner Nathan Lyon took 10 wickets for the match as Australia underlined their absolute dominance of New Zealand with a crushing 279-run victory in the third Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Monday to sweep the series 3-0.

The hosts were utterly ruthless with bat and ball throughout the series and dismissed New Zealand for 136 having declared on 217 for two after lunch to hand the Black Caps an unlikely victory target of 416.

New Zealand had arrived with some confidence they could repeat the singular feat of the triumphant 1985–86 tourists from across the Tasman Sea but will return well beaten after injury and illness ravaged the squad.

With captain Kane Williamson and batsman Henry Nicholls missing because of a flu bug, New Zealand had no answer to the fearsome pace of Australia's quicks and the guile of Lyon's spin.

Lyon, aided by paceman Mitchell Starc's 3-25, cleaned up the tail on a deteriorating pitch to finish with 5-50 to add to his 5-68 in the first innings.

After New Zealand had slumped to 22-4, Colin de Grandhomme scored a gritty 52 and BJ Watling 19 off 108 balls and at one stage it looked like a fifth day might be needed for the first time in the series.

But with Matt Henry unable to bat because of a broken thumb sustained earlier in the match Lyon ended the resistance under the SCG lights when he had Watling caught by Pat Cummins.

"It's a great summer for the Australian Test side and it's very special to be part of it, to win Tests at home and be very clinical in all wins, very impressive," off-spinner Lyon said.

"To take 10 on my home deck in front of friends and family is pretty special but every chance you get to put the Baggy Green on is for me a dream come true."

Ross Taylor scored 22 runs for the tourists to take his career tally to 7,174 and overhaul Stephen Fleming as New Zealand's highest Test scorer.

It was a rare glimmer of light for the visitors and five balls after passing that milestone Taylor had his off stump removed by a peach of a delivery from Cummins, the world's top-ranked Test bowler.

"We were outplayed in all departments," said Williamson.

"We were good with the ball in hand but with the bat we couldn't be good for long enough ... Frustrating and disappointing coming here after playing some good cricket for a long period of time."

Prolific batting

Earlier, David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne had produced more of the prolific batting that has helped carry Australia to five thumping victories in five Tests against Pakistan and New Zealand in their home summer.

Warner secured his 24th Test century with an exhibition of batting on his home ground for 111 not out as the hosts looked to quickly inflate the lead of 263 with which they started the day.

The opener, born a few hundred metres from the SCG, hit 154 and 335 not out against Pakistan in the first two Tests of Australia's home season but had failed to get past the half-century mark in five innings in the New Zealand series.

The left-hander looked unlikely to repeat those failures on Monday after resuming on 23 with Australia 40 without loss and he reached the milestone with three runs through mid-wicket off 147 deliveries.

Three balls later Labuschagne, who had joined Warner after Joe Burns was caught and bowled by Todd Astle for 40, passed the half-century mark for the seventh time in Australia's five home Tests this year.

Australia captain Tim Paine declared after Labuschagne, who scored a maiden double century in the home side's first-innings 454, was caught at long for 59.

Warner finishes Australia's five home Tests with 786 runs at an average of 131, while Labuschagne's glorious summer ended with a tally of 896 runs at 112 and both man of the match and man of the series honours.

"I'm very lucky no doubt to be captaining this group, it's a special team," said Paine.

"Batting has become very consistent with Marnus leading this year and Steve (Smith) and David back ... it's pretty simple leading this side at times."

Labuschagne was handed a rare penalty by umpire Aleem Dar for running on the wicket but it never looked like the extra five runs being added to New Zealand's first innings score of 251 would make a difference to the outcome.

"There's no secret the SCG pitch is one of the more spin-friendly in Australia," Stead said in a statement. "Will offers something different to our two other spinners in the squad with his right arm off-spin and height.

"The fact he's played a lot of cricket in Sydney during his career for New South Wales will also be helpful as we prepare for this final Test."

Australia have already wrapped up a 2-0 victory in the three-match series after winning the first test in Perth by 296 runs.
