It comes as a boost for the New Zealand side heading forward, who reached the finals on the past two occasions - having lost both times, against Australia in 2015 and England in 2019.

Boult, last year in August, alongside veteran batter Martin Guptill and out-of-favour all-rounder Colin de Grandhomme, decided against signing the central contract to continue playing franchise cricket around the world and spend more time with family. Upon mutually agreeing to the same, a deal was cut contrary to this, with both parties open to see Boult remaining committed to playing for the country, at least in mega-events.

On the other hand, right-hand express pace Adam Milne has signed his first central contract in five years. Following his remarkable run in the international cricket the past season, where he picked 24 wickets in total between 11 T20Is and five ODIs, Milne even picked a five-for against Sri Lanka in a T20I game in Dunedin this April.&nbsp;

Effective with the new ball and even at the death, Milne is set to get an extended run considering two ICC World Cups in one year from now - the 2023 World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Recently, Williamson opened up on his right knee injury and didn't rule himself out of the ODI WC.&nbsp;The New Zealand white-ball skipper&nbsp;ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in match one of IPL 2023 and underwent a surgery in New Zealand as he is now in the early stages of rehabilitation.&nbsp;

"I'm just trying to keep it week-to-week at the moment," Williamson was quoted as saying by India Today.

"I'm making progress, but I'm not putting a timeline on anything. I haven't had such a long-term injury before but talking to other people that have, the journey is a bit of a long one so if you look too far ahead it can probably become a little bit daunting.

"Whereas, one week at a time, ticking off those small markers, those little wins that are nice to experience. But also knowing that the journey won't be completely smooth and you have a few setbacks along the way that you have to navigate," he added.

He returned with 578 runs in the previous World Cup, including two fifties and an equal number of hundreds (also winning the Player-of-the-Series award), and led the side to the final where they lost to England in the Super Over (on boundary count).&nbsp;

He will be desperate to regain fitness before the commencement of the 2023 ODI WC. In the draft schedule, the Black Caps are set to kick off the tournament by playing defending champions England in the first game in Ahmedabad on October 05.

NZ captain Kane Williamson opens up on knee injury, chances of featuring in ODI World Cup

New Zealand seamer Trent Boult didn't sign the central contract with NZC for the current tenure as he wanted to play in the T20 Leagues around the world and spend more time with his family.&nbsp;

However, with the 2023 World Cup scheduled to begin in less than three months, NZC and Boult have cut a 'flexi' deal between them that might see the left-armer remain available and play ahead of the contracted players and earn a bit more also - a situation the former head coach Mike Hesson feels uncomfortable with.

Speaking with Sky Sports, Hesson expressed his displeasure over Boult getting an unfair advantage over centrally contracted players who have put in hard yards to be here in the first place. Boult, who represented Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2023, will now feature for MI New York for the inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC).

"It just gets really untidy when you've got 20 contracts, or however many is on that [NZC] list now and then you have an extra one [for Boult], and next year you might have three extra ones and."

Boult, who also appeared for the Blackcaps in T20 World Cup last year, is likely to get a go-ahead for this year's WC. Hesson feels while it could be a win-win situation for both Boult and NZC, it remains unfair to the current breed of players who are also vying for a spot in the side for the World Cup.

"This flexi contract, it might work really well for Trent, and it might actually work well for New Zealand Cricket, but it does open up a whole can of worms," Hesson added.

<h2>Boult wants some extra dollar now</h2>

Alongside Hesson, New Zealand's former assistant coach Craig McMillan shared the same views. McMillan said though he respects Boult for his services to New Zealand cricket, this current situation around the 'flexi' contract doesn't sit well with him either.

"It seemed only 12 months ago Trent Boult was more than happy to make his decision to move away from international cricket and take the riches of the T20 franchises around the world, and you couldn't bemoan him that," McMillan said.

"He'd had a wonderful career for New Zealand and been a great servant and now almost wants a little bit of a dollar each way. It's a difficult one. It doesn't sit overly well with me, and I'm sure it doesn't sit with some of the other players within the setup who are doing the hard yards then have to move back [when they return]," McMillan added.

Skipper Babar Azam smashed a magnificent century while pace bowler Haris Rauf took four wickets as Pakistan beat New Zealand by 38 runs in the second T20 international in Lahore on Saturday.

Azam, who fell for just nine in his 100th T20I on Friday, compensated with a brisk 58-ball 101 not out to lift Pakistan to a solid 192-4 in their 20 overs.

Rauf, who took a career best 4-18 in Pakistan's 88-run win in the series opener, finished with 4-27 to restrict New Zealand to 154-7.

Pakistan now lead the five-match series 2-0 with the last three matches in Lahore (April 17) and Rawalpindi (April 20 and 24).

Chad Bowes (26) and skipper Tom Latham (19) put on 44 for the first wicket in 6.2 overs, but as the asking rate soared New Zealand's chase lost steam.

"We have been there or thereabouts but weren't able to finish the innings off, both with the ball and bat," said Latham.

"When Babar plays like that, you tip your hat off."

Azam was the mainstay of the Pakistan innings after he won the toss and chose to bat.

He smashed a six and two fours in the last over to reach his third T20I century, becoming only the sixth batter to do so in the shortest format at international level.

Azam put on 99 for the opening wicket with Mohammad Rizwan, who scored 50 off 34 balls.

Azam, whose knock included 11 fours and three sixes, then added 87 for the fifth wicket with Iftikhar Ahmed, who finished 33 not out as the home team added 65 runs in the last five overs.

After removing Rizwan in the 11th over, New Zealand slowed Pakistan's charge as Matt Henry then dismissed Fakhar Zaman for a duck and finished with 2-29.

Saim Ayub also fell without scoring and Imad Wasim was out for two as Pakistan lost four wickets for just six runs in the space of 14 balls.

Azam started the 20th over on 84 and looked like he would end short of a century, but he took the attack to James Neesham -- dispatching the last ball over cover for a four to reach his ninth hundred in all T20 cricket.

Only Chris Gayle of the West Indies has hit more hundreds in the format with 22, while India's Rohit Sharma leads the T20I chart with four tons.

Pak vs NZ, 2nd T20I: Babar Azam ton, Haris Rauf four-for as host beat Kiwis by 38 runs

Tim Seifert was the match-winner for the second straight game as New Zealand clinched the T20 series against Sri Lanka with a tense four-wicket victory in Queenstown on Saturday.

Seifert blasted a career-high 88 off 48 balls to fire the Black Caps to 183-6 from 19.5 overs after the tourists had posted 182-6 in the third and final game at John Davies Oval.

The opener struck 10 fours and three sixes in an innings that bore many of the hallmarks of his unbeaten 79 when New Zealand levelled the series at Dunedin on Wednesday.

Captain Tom Latham provided the only meaningful support with 31 off 23 and New Zealand's middle order nearly conspired to lose the game after Seifert departed with four overs remaining.

Needing to score at little more than a run-a-ball at that stage, the Black Caps stuttered.

Needing 10 runs to win off the final over bowled by Lahiru Kumara (3-38), Mark Chapman struck a six off the first ball before he was the first of three New Zealand wickets to fall.

With two still needed off the last two deliveries, Rachin Ravindra held his nerve to find a gap in the outfield and secure the 2-1 series win.

Latham conceded the run chase should not have become so tight at the death.

"They put us under pressure so it was good to see the way the guys responded to that," Latham said.

"The way Timmy Seifert went out there and played was really important but obviously it wasn't ideal going down to the last couple of balls.

"I'd say we always had it under control though."

It completes a disappointing tour for Sri Lanka, who lost the Test and ODI series by the same 2-0 scoreline but were more competitive in the shortest format.

Captain Dasun Shanaka said his team adjusted gradually to New Zealand conditions and suggested Sri Lankan cricket officials should take careful note.

"I think it's about preparation. We should make sure when we come here again, we should come at least two weeks, three weeks before we play," Shanaka said.

"Once we got into the T20 series we started looking a different team."

Sri Lanka gave themselves a shot at victory after Kusal Mendis struck a rapid 73 off 48 balls, taking full advantage after being dropped by Daryl Mitchell at slip when on 10.

The opener-wicketkeeper went on to hit six fours and five sixes in his 12th half-century, falling just short of his career-high score of 79.

Having been asked to bat, Mendis was the dominant figure in an opening stand of 76 with Pathum Nissanka (25 off 25), before putting on a further 46 with Kusal Perera (33 off 21).

Wickets fell rapidly over the closing overs, preventing the tourists from going close to 200.

Seifert has not been included in New Zealand's squad for the white ball tour of Pakistan beginning on Friday as he is expecting the arrival of his first child.

Sri Lanka's next assignment is a two-Test home series against Ireland, beginning on April 16.

It was the first time England have lost a Test after forcing their opponents to follow on.

A topsy-turvy Test match swung back to New Zealand during the final two gripping days. England were on course for victory after declaring their first innings on 435-8, then bowling out New Zealand for 209.

Former skipper Kane Williamson dragged New Zealand back into the Test with a superb 132 in their second innings 483 on Monday, leaving England 258 to win.

As England chipped away at their target, Root's partnership with Ben Stokes ended on 121 when England's captain was caught at square leg.

The pressure on England intensified dramatically after Root went for 95 with England still 57 runs short.

Wicketkeeper Ben Foakes kept England in the fight with a cavalier 35, surviving a dropped catch by Michael Bracewell before clubbing three fours to the boundary.

After Foakes was caught by Wagner in the deep off Southee, it left the last pair James Anderson and Jack Leach still needing seven runs for victory.

Anderson clubbed a four to get within two runs before Wagner and Blundell combined to land the knockout punch.

"We were prepared to walk off and shake hands if we were not good enough, but it is special to be a part of such a game of Test cricket. We gave our everything out in the middle. We trust each other and a lot of the boys stand up whenever things go bad for us," said New Zealand captain Tim Southee after the match.

De Grandhomme, 36, made the decision to bring down the curtains on an impressive international career after discussions this week with New Zealand Cricket — which has agreed to release him from his central contract.

The Zimbabwean-born Kiwi said a range of factors had played a part in his decision, not least his struggles with injury and the increasing competition for places in all three formats.

"I accept that I am not getting any younger and that the training is getting harder, particularly with the injuries. I also have a growing family and am trying to understand what my future looks like post-cricket. All of this has been on my mind over the past few weeks," said the all-rounder in a statement.

Colin de Grandhomme bows out of international cricket for good

In what may come as a shocker to the cricketing community, New Zealand pacer Trent Boult has decided to step out of his New Zealand Cricket (NZC) central contract to spend more time with his family, fueling aspersions of an impending retirement from international cricket.&nbsp;

According to NZC, Boult requested the board to be relieved from his central contract which was duly accepted. David White, NZC chief executive stated that the board respected Trent's position but was saddened to lose a player of his class.&nbsp;

David White, the CEO of New Zealand Cricket is however, hopeful Boult will be part of the Kiwi squad for the showpiece event in Australia later this year. White said Boult is more likely to feature only in global tournaments now and might not take part in bilateral cricket.

"I’d imagine that he will be selected for the T20 World Cup in Australia because he’s been a big part of our plans and preparation for that. He knows he will be playing a significantly less amount of international cricket," White was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz.

"We’ve said to him that, in the future, priority for selection will be given to centrally contracted Black Caps and domestic players. Although, we will, on a case-by-case basis, consider him.

Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum has been appointed head coach of England`s test team, the country`s cricket board (ECB) said on Thursday.
