No AI until high school: New York City schools introduce sweeping new rules

A fresh political and legal clash is unfolding in New York City as U.S. President Donald Trump takes aim at Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s proposed tax on high-value second homes.

Trump has criticised the measure, arguing that the tax could drive wealthy homeowners and investment away from New York City. He has also questioned whether the federal government has any legal authority to challenge the policy.

Mamdani’s administration, however, says the measure is aimed at making the city more affordable and ensuring that owners of expensive properties that are not their primary residences contribute more towards the city’s finances.

The proposed tax has already encountered a legal setback. A Staten Island court reportedly blocked its rollout, while the Mamdani administration has moved to appeal the decision and says it will defend the policy in court.

<h2>Zohran Mamdani's background and career</h2><p>Zohran Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda. He is the only child of the postcolonialist author Mahmood Mamdani and the award-winning Filmmaker Mira Nair. His father was a Gujarati Muslim who immigrated to Uganda. Mamdani has both paternal and maternal diasporic links to India. He studied partly in Cape Town and then moved to America. He described himself as ‘privileged’ and said that his reality was not the reality of New York City. "I never had to want for something, and yet I knew that was not in any way the reality for most New Yorkers."</p><p>He studied at the Bronx High School of Science, where he ran unsuccessfully for Vice President. &nbsp; There, he co-founded the school's chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine. He also played soccer for the West Side team. He was fond of Hip Hop music and collaborated with Ugandan rapper HAB under the nickname Young Cardamom. &nbsp;</p><p>He graduated in 2014 on African Studies. Before running for office, he was a housing counsellor. He said that he helped immigrants in Queens with eviction notices to help them keep their homes, an experience which motivated him to run for the office.&nbsp;</p><p>In 2015, he joined the New York political scene with the Democratic Socialist Party of America and campaigned for several other leaders like Khader El-Yateem and Tiffany Cabán. In 2020, he won the New York 36th State Assembly district, which encompasses Astoria and Long Island City in Queens. He ran on the issues of housing reform, prison reform and public ownership of utilities. He was re-elected without any opposition in 2022 and 2024. On October 23, 2024, he announced his Mayoral candidacy. He started campaigning with a call for free city buses and a rent freeze in rent-stabilised housing, increasing affordable housing units, establishing government-run grocery stores, and increasing taxes on the rich whose net earnings are more than $1 million.</p><p>&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Net worth of Zohran Mamdani&nbsp;</h2><p>According to Forbes, Mamdani has a net valuation of $200,000, which is significantly lower than $10 million of his opponent, Andrew Cuomo. &nbsp; His major property disclosure as a New York City assemblyman was the land in Uganda, which he acquired in 2012. From rapper to NYC mayoral candidate: How Zohran Mamdani became ‘worst nightmare’ of Trump

<p>In a stunning political development, Andrew Cuomo, the New York City former governor has conceded in the City’s mayoral Democratic primary to state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. He was trying to pull off a political comeback after resigning from office in 2021 amid a sexual harassment scandal.</p><p>The concession of Cuomo was unexpected as counting appeared to continue til next week under the ranked choice system, allowing the people of New York to pick up to five candidates in order of preference. Following the loss of the former governor, it marked the "biggest upset in modern NYC history," Trip Yang, a political strategist, told the BBC.</p><p>"A massive win for Zohran Mamdani that shows that when Donald Trump is President, New York Democrats want to see their leaders fight with enthusiasm and courage, and that's what Zohran showed voters,” he added.</p><p>In an interview, Cuomo told the New York Times that he was still evaluating whether he would contest the general election in November on the independent line.</p><h3>Who is &nbsp;Andrew Cuomo?</h3><p>Andrew M. Cuomo served as the 56th Governor of New York State. He was born into an Italian-American family and raised in Queens. The son of Matilda and the late Governor Mario Cuomo, Andrew Cuomo dedicated his life journey to public service and has proven leadership skills in order to make government work for the people of New York City.</p><p>Following his graduation from Fordham University and Albany Law School, he successfully led the campaign for his father for governor, and later served as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan, according to a report on the website of Andrew Cuomo.</p><p>He founded Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged (HELP) in Brooklyn, New York, in 1986. This initiative aimed to provide a single shelter for families who have since developed to become a national leader in the fight against homelessness, serving people of all backgrounds, including veterans, people with health challenges and disabilities, survivors of domestic violence and seniors.&nbsp;<br>In 2006, Andrew Cuomo was elected as Attorney General of New York and later served in the position for 11 years. During this service, with the theory of progressive government, he made it a functional reality, while simultaneously reimagining and rebuilding New York’s outdated infrastructure and putting the fiscal house of the city in order for the first time in a generation.</p><p>During Andrew Cuomo’s tenure, New York reasserted itself as a national leader in social progress. The son of Matilda and the late Governor Mario Cuomo, the former Governor Andrew Cuomo, dedicated his life journey to public service and has proven leadership skills in order to make government work for the people of New York City.

In a stunning political development, Andrew Cuomo, the New York City former governor has conceded in the City’s mayoral Democratic primary to state assemblyman Zohran Mamdani. He was trying to pull off a political comeback after resigning from office in 2021 amid a sexual harassment scandal. The concession of Cuomo was unexpected as counting appeared to continue til next week under the ranked choice system, allowing the people of New York to pick up to five candidates in order of preference. Following the loss of the former governor, it marked the "biggest upset in modern NYC history," Trip Yang, a political strategist, told the BBC. "A massive win for Zohran Mamdani that shows that when Donald Trump is President, New York Democrats want to see their leaders fight with enthusiasm and courage, and that's what Zohran showed voters,” he added. In an interview, Cuomo told the New York Times that he was still evaluating whether he would contest the general election in November on the independent line. Who is Andrew Cuomo? Andrew M. Cuomo served as the 56th Governor of New York State. He was born into an Italian-American family and raised in Queens. The son of Matilda and the late Governor Mario Cuomo, Andrew Cuomo dedicated his life journey to public service and has proven leadership skills in order to make government work for the people of New York City. Following his graduation from Fordham University and Albany Law School, he successfully led the campaign for his father for governor, and later served as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan, according to a report on the website of Andrew Cuomo. He founded Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged (HELP) in Brooklyn, New York, in 1986. This initiative aimed to provide a single shelter for families who have since developed to become a national leader in the fight against homelessness, serving people of all backgrounds, including veterans, people with health challenges and disabilities, survivors of domestic violence and seniors. In 2006, Andrew Cuomo was elected as Attorney General of New York and later served in the position for 11 years. During this service, with the theory of progressive government, he made it a functional reality, while simultaneously reimagining and rebuilding New York’s outdated infrastructure and putting the fiscal house of the city in order for the first time in a generation. During Andrew Cuomo’s tenure, New York reasserted itself as a national leader in social progress. His time in office saw major strides across key areas, boosting the economy, improving environmental standards, reforming the criminal justice system, and increasing college enrolment among high school graduates. Far-right activist and President Donald Trump’s ally, Laura Loomer, had recently targeted Chinese President Xi Jinping’s daughter, Xi Mingze, and demanded that she be deported from the United States.

Laura Loomer, a far-right activist and political commentator and President Donald Trump’s ally, has sparked a fresh controversy by targeting Indian filmmaker Mira Nair’s son Zohran Mamdani, a New York mayoral hopeful, with a post warning, “Get ready for another 9/11.” Zohran is Meera Nair’s son with her second husband, Mahmood Mamdani, a Ugandan with roots in Gujarat. Loomer, who is known for her incendiary remarks, said in a post on X, “A pro HAMAS Muslim socialist is about to be the next Mayor of NYC.” Mamdani, 33, a democratic socialist and current state assembly member from Queens, has been garnering interest as a progressive candidate amid growing support among young voters and immigrants. Mamdani has surged in fundraising and public interest as his campaign focuses on cost-of-living issues, including free buses and rent freezes, and all this appeals to voters who feel overlooked by the political establishment, said a New York Times report. However, his recent comment at a public forum drew criticism from Indian-American leaders. When asked whether he would join Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a press conference if PM Modi were to hold a rally in New York, Mamdani said he would not. New York Assembly member Jenifer Rajkumar, the first Hindu-American elected to state office, responded sharply. “At a time when New Yorkers are struggling with real issues—rising crime, a housing crisis, and growing hate—we cannot afford to be distracted by extreme, divisive language about foreign leaders,” she told the New York Post. “Hindu voters want our leaders to build bridges, not burn them.” ‘Zohran seeks to divide us by religion, pitting Muslims and Hindus against each other’ Human rights lawyer Jaspreet Singh added, “Zohran has used his platform to amplify some of the worst anti-Hindu rhetoric imaginable. Words matter… he seeks to divide us by religion, pitting Muslims and Hindus against each other.” In spite of the criticism, Mamdani’s campaign continues to resonate with certain sections of the electorate. His outreach to the city’s sizeable Muslim population, over 350,000 of whom are registered to vote, could prove pivotal, added NYT. “This June 24, in this Democratic primary, we have a chance to tell the world that Muslims don’t just belong in New York City but that we belong in City Hall,” Mamdani told a recent gathering at the MAS Bronx Muslim Center. Loomer had on Thursday targeted Chinese President Xi Jinping’s daughter, Xi Mingze, and demanded that she be deported from the US. In a post on X, Loomer said, “Let’s go! Deport Xi Jinping’s daughter!,” claiming that, “Xi Mingze lives in Massachusetts and went to Harvard!” “Sources tell me PLA guards from the CCP provide her with private security on US soil in Massachusetts!,” she added. Loomer didn’t provide any evidence to support her claims as she tagged US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in her post. Xi Mingze is the only daughter of Chinese President Xi Jinping and the celebrity soprano Peng Liyuan, and very little is known about her.

<p>In a successful test, a supersonic aircraft—which has the nickname “Son of Concorde”—came close to the speed of sound Mach 1 on Tuesday (Nov 5). This aircraft can now help travellers fly between New York and London in only three and a half hours.</p>

<p>This 201-foot-long single-seat XB-1 test model by American company Boom Technology reached 499 knots, which is around 574 miles per hour, in the milestone test, which took place at 23,015 feet&nbsp;above Mojave, California.</p>

<p>This was the seventh planned flight, which was carried out by former Navy test pilot Tristan “Geppetto” Brandenburg since March to “progress toward supersonic flight” as per the company, and the test has brought them close to restoring the rapid form of air travel safely and effectively.</p>

<p>The aircraft’s predecessor, the Concorde, could fly from London to New York in just three hours before it retired in 2003.</p>

New York City is going after rats with contraceptives. They are hoping to cut down the number of rats roaming the streets and subways by targeting their ability to reproduce. Special traps, with birth control pellets will be placed in locations where rats are known to thrive. The idea is simple, the rats eat the pellets, and over time, their birth rate drops.

NYC Mayor Eric Adams pleads not guilty to corruption charges

<p>New York City Mayor Eric Adams was indicted on five federal charges of bribery, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign donations. The indictment comes three years after authorities opened an investigation against him in 2021, with primary charges coming from allegations that he may have received funds from the Turkish government in exchange for official actions on Ankara’s behalf.</p>

<p>The indictment said that a “senior official in the Turkish diplomatic establishment” sent illegal donations to Adams’s election campaign in 2021. After he won the elections, a Turkish official allegedly wrote to one of Adam’s staffers that the foreign minister of Turkey was “personally paying attention to him.”</p>

<p>The day he won the elections, he allegedly received a text from a Turkish businessman, which read, “I’m going to go and talk to our elders in Ankara about how we can turn this into an advantage for our country’s lobby.”</p>

<p>As per allegations, in April 2022, a Turkish official won assurances from Adams that the mayor won’t speak about the Armenian Genocide as the Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day was approaching.</p>

<p>“Adams did not make such a statement,” the indictment said. Armenian Genocide Remembrance Day commemorates the killings of more than 1.5 million Armenians by Turks more than a century ago.</p>

New York City Police Commissioner Edward A. Caban resigned on 12 Sept at the request of City Hall after federal agents seized his phone last week as part of a criminal investigation. <p>According to a report issued by city officials, thousands of food delivery workers have lost their employment even though the cost of having a meal delivered has skyrocketed. However, the increase in the minimum wage in New York City has increased income for those workers who have managed to stay in their jobs.</p>

<p>The raises are mostly being attributed to a December law that raised the minimum wage to over $20 per hour, which delivery services like Doordash, Grubhub, and Uber Eats attempted to overturn with a lawsuit last year, according to a report by the city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection.</p>

<p>According to the report, those who were still working made $28.3 million each week, or 22% more, in the first quarter than they did in the previous one and 42% more than they did a year earlier. That's even though, according to the report, they worked 22% fewer hours per week.</p>

<p>According to the report, the average hourly salary, including tips, increased significantly from $11.72 last year to $19.26.</p>

<p>However, the study found that the number of active worker accounts on delivery apps fell to 99,000, a drop of 8% from the previous quarter and 9% from a year ago.</p>

<p>Since the controversial law was passed, thousands of people have lost their jobs. City officials believe that 65,000 delivery workers, some of whom are working through multiple apps, are affected.</p>

<p>Food delivery expenses have risen by 10%, with a 12% increase in restaurant menu pricing and a 58% increase in app fees to fund rising salaries.</p>

<p>As a result, customers tip less. While delivery prices have increased by an average of $2.30 per transaction, tips have decreased by $2.64, according to a study issued on Thursday.</p>

<p>According to the report, the average cost of food delivery ended up rising by 76 cents to $39.11 per order.</p>

<p>Despite increasing costs, deliveries rose 8% to 2.8 million in the first quarter compared to last year, while customers paid 10% more, totalling $103 million, according to the report.</p>

<p>The delivery apps argue that DCPW's optimistic portrayal is, at best, deceptive.</p>

<p>According to UberEats, there is a queue for delivery jobs, with around 27,000 New Yorkers looking for work, for the first time.</p>

<p>“The couriers who are still able to work need to work much harder, doing 80% more deliveries per hour than they did before the rule took effect,” UberEats said in a statement.</p>
