False bomb threats were received by 15 synagogues in the metro region of New York City early on Friday (Dec 1), which included two houses of worship in Brooklyn and five houses of worship in upper Manhattan, as per the NYPD and a Jewish security agency.

The police said that the bomb threats were sent through email to five synagogues on the Upper East and Upper West sides, along with Hudson Heights, in Manhattan between 5:15 and 6 am local time and they warned of the presence of explosives inside the buildings, said police.

Speaking to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, director of the Community Security Initiative Mitch Silber said that intimidating emails were also sent to two synagogues in Brooklyn.

“Jewish congregations on Long Island and in Westchester County received the disturbing missives, too,” Silber said, as reported by the New York Post.

“There are multiple explosives inside the synagogue,” read one of the threats, as per the news agency. “These explosives will go off in a few hours and I will make history. I will make sure you all die,” it added.

Speaking to the Jewish news agency, Silber said that most of the threats were sent using contact forms on the websites of the synagogues, and all those emails were not found credible.

As per the police, the houses of worship in Manhattan which were targetted were the Park East Synagogue on East 68th Street near Third Avenue; the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue on West 68th Street near Central Park West; Congregation Rodeph Sholom on West 83rd Street near Central Park West; Congregation Ohab Zedek on West 95th Street near Columbus Avenue, and the Mount Sinai Jewish Centre on Bennett Avenue near Broadway.

Silber said that the early-morning hate campaign was aimed at forcing law enforcement to respond to the houses of worship while making interruptions in their operations.

“They’re really just to disrupt, to intimidate,” Silber said while speaking about the threats, and adding that an investigation will be started and that “there should be consequences.”

The threats were sent as the city saw an increase in antisemitic crimes so far this year, with nearly 275 such cases reported between Sunday and January 1, as per the latest NYPD data available.

The figure marked a nearly 3 per cent increase in hate crimes with 268 of them which were targeted towards Jewish victims getting reported in 2022, according to the statistics.

However, there has been an increase in reports of antisemitic offences in the city, especially since the start of the Israel-Hamas war in early October.

New York, one of the most populous cities in the US known for its bustling skyscrapers, is sinking under its own weight, a study done by NASA has warned.

The research conducted by scientists from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Rutgers University has pinpointed various locations in the city which are sinking at varying rates than the whole city.

The scientists said the sinking rate in these locations is faster than the average 1.6 millimetres per year experienced by the rest of NYC.

Among the areas which have been observed to be sinking faster are LaGuardia Airport, Arthur Ashe Stadium and Coney Island.

A city sitting atop ancient glacier that is now retreating

The researchers found that from 2016 to 2023, LaGuardia’s runways and Arthur Ashe Stadium was sinking at 3.7 and 4.6 millimetres per year, respectively.

While the whole city is sinking under the weight of skyscrapers, the newly identified hotspots are dipping because they sit atop an ancient glacier that is retreating.

And this is happening because of dual factors—natural and human, the study noted.

The ancient glacier covered most of New England about 24,000 years ago, and a wall of ice more than a mile high covered what is today Albany in upstate New York.

Some areas are getting uplifted

Interestingly, the team also found areas which are moving up.

East Williamsburg, Brooklyn, and Woodside, Queens areas were found to be rising by about 1.6 mm and 6.9 mm per year respectively.

The study’s co-author Robert Kopp of Rutgers University believe that groundwater pumping and injection wells used to treat polluted water may have played a role in the uplift of these areas, but added that further investigation is needed.

Several states of the United States issued an alert after one person died and 16 others were infected by West Nile virus which is spreading in New York City.

The virus is found in the five boroughs of the Big Apple: Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, Bronx and Manhattan.

State officials identified more mosquito pools infected with the virus this year in comparison to the five-year average.

As of Friday, 16 cases of West Nile virus were reported across the five boroughs, and the maximum number of cases were found in Queens, reported the Health Department of the city.

On Friday (September 15), the first death was reported due to the virus in Bergen County, New Jersey.

Out of the eight cases of West Nile virus so far reported in the states, six people were hospitalised, stated the New Jersey Health Department.

In 2022, the officials reported 20 cases of the virus in New Jersey, out of which four proved to be fatal.

On the other hand, New York City reported 46 cases last year, out of which two became fatal. Fortunately, no cases of the virus have been reported so far in New York.

What causes West Nile virus and how to protect oneself?

As per the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the West Nile virus has become the primary cause for the spread of mosquito-borne diseases in the US, as most of the cases were reported during the summer and fall.

As per data, roughly one in five people developed symptoms after they were infected with the virus. Additionally, one in around 150 people develop symptoms of severe illness like fever, muscle weakness, headache, altered mental status and paralysis.

The virus which originated in 1937 got its name from Uganda's West Nile district where it was first found and isolated. The virus is usually spread by mosquitoes which become infected after feeding on infected birds that are often carriers of the disease.

The virus is related genetically to the Japanese encephalitis family of viruses. Till now, no human vaccine has been invented for the virus.

As per health officials, people have to avoid mosquito bites to protect themselves from the virus.

Also, the population of mosquitoes can be reduced by preventing stagnant pools of water in swimming pools, gutters and buckets.

Severe thunderstorms, heavy rainfall and unfavourable weather conditions on Sunday wreaked havoc on the travel plans of Americans across the country. The most heavily impacted airports were Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, and LaGuardia Airports, all serving New York City. The effects were widespread, with over 1,600 flights canceled throughout the United States.

Among all the airports in the US, Newark Liberty International Airport bore the brunt of flight cancellations on Sunday with the maximum number of flight cancellations.

However, the issues faced by travellers extended beyond flight disruptions as they encountered problems in receiving their baggage as well.

Over 1,600 flights cancelled across US due to severe rainfall, thunderstorms

Some of the locals in New York City aren't happy after a recent proposal issued to cut down on coal and wood-burning pizza ovens by 75% in order to reduce emissions, New York Post reported.

New rules were drafted by the New York City's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) stating that field test data must show that the Emissions Control Device has reduced the existing cook stove's total particulate matter emissions by 75%.

The main objective of the proposal was to reduce air pollution coming from coal and wood emissions. Pizzerias are now required to evaluate whether they can install emissions control devices for their kitchen stoves, but some say those devices would cost a lot.

As quoted by Fox News, DEP spokesman Ted Timbers said in a statement Sunday: "All New Yorkers deserve to breathe healthy air and wood and coal-fired stoves are among the largest contributors of harmful pollutants in neighbourhoods with poor air quality."

"This common-sense (sic) rule, developed with restaurant and environmental justice groups, requires a professional review of whether installing emission controls is feasible," Timbers added.

What's the issue?

Some critics have said that the old and historic outlets would be impacted, and the smoky flavour of the pizzas might vanish if restaurants replace the coal/wood-fired ovens with cleaner-burning ones. Meanwhile, the officials say it will affect less than 100 of the city's countless pizza joints.

Scott LoBaido, an angry activist, was seen on the streets shouting war slogans while protesting the proposal. He even threw multiple pizzas at NYC Hall in response to the city's crackdown on coal and wood-fired ovens. He said Monday, "Well… this is the New York Pizza Party! Give us pizza or give us death!"

The Hindu festival of Diwali is likely to be a school holiday in New York City. According to a report by the Times of India on Sunday (June 18), the New York state legislature passed a bill last week to make Diwali a school holiday in the city before it was adjourned. Both the New York Senate and the Assembly voted in favour of the bill before they ended their session on June 10, the report said. The bill will now go to Governor Kathy Hochul who is expected to sign it to make it a law. Two earlier attempts to pass the bill in 2021 and 2022 had failed. Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, who introduced the bill, said it fulfilled the dream of the South Asian community when she passed her bill (A.7769) to designate Diwali as a public school holiday in New York City, the Times of India report added. Diwali has not been declared a national holiday in the United States yet. Last month, US Congresswoman Grace Meng introduced a bill in Congress to declare Diwali a federal holiday. If passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden, the Diwali Day Act would make the festival the 12th federally recognised holiday in the US, the report further said. This year Diwali will be celebrated on November 12. Pennsylvania declares Diwali an official holiday In April, the US state of Pennsylvania declared Diwali an official holiday. The announcement was made by Senator Nikil Saval on Twitter. "The Senate voted unanimously to recognize Diwali as an official holiday! To all Pennsylvanians who celebrate this festival of light and connection: you are seen, you are welcome, you matter," Senator Saval tweeted on April 26. The legislation to make Diwali an official holiday was introduced by Saval and Senator Greg Rothman. In a statement, Senator Rothman said, "Recognising Diwali as an official state holiday upholds and celebrates our Commonwealth’s rich cultural diversity." “Thousands of Pennsylvanians celebrate Diwali each year, including many residents of the 34th Senatorial District,” the statement added. After a dangerous TikTok trend led to indiscriminate stealing of cars in the US, particularly of the Hyundai and Kia models, the city of New York is suing the South Korean carmakers.

The city accused the automakers of negligence and creating a public nuisance by selling vehicles that are too easy to steal. New York argued that the carmaker did not install anti-theft devices called immobilizers on most of their cars between 2011 and 2022, making it easy to steal them.

“In electing profits over safety and deviating from industry norms by not including engine immobilizers as a standard safety feature, defendants created and maintained a public nuisance,” read the filing submitted to the US District Court in the Southern District of New York.

“This case is a clear example of what happens to public safety when car manufacturers choose not to include standard anti-theft technology in their cars,” the filing added.

“Making sure cars are not easy to steal protects both property and the public by keeping dangerous drivers in stolen vehicles off the roads,” it said

NYC's Roosevelt Hotel converts into migrant processing centre

New York City may soon sink under the sea predicts a new research. The city is sinking due to the weight of its towering skyscrapers. Coupled with the rising sea levels, this weight is pushing New York under at an average rate of 1-2 millimetres per year; some areas are sinking at twice this rate. Since 1950, the water surrounding New York City has risen by approximately 9 inches (22 centimetres). The rising water levels are a looming threat to the 8.4 million people of the city.

Researchers behind the study published in the Earth’s Future journal warn that "a deeply concentrated population of 8.4 million people faces varying degrees of hazard from inundation in New York City."

Why is New York sinking?

New York's iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, or rather their weight, are causing the city to sink.

As per the research estimates, New York City's buildings, including iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building and the Chrysler Building, weigh a total of 1.68 trillion pounds — equivalent to the weight of 140 million elephants. This enormous weight pushes down on a mixture of different materials beneath the city, causing it to sink just a little bit every year.

It says that while the city's largest buildings are constructed on solid bedrock, such as schist, the ground beneath also contains a mixture of sand and clays. This mixture contributes to the natural sinking occurring along much of the US east coast as the land adjusts to the retreat of glaciers following the last ice age.

Were the iconic buildings a mistake?

Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the US Geological Survey, and lead author of the research emphasised that constructing large buildings in New York was not a mistake, but it is essential to consider that each new construction further compresses the ground.

He said that the softer the soil, the more the buildings compress it.

Also read | Mumbai is sinking in the sea, says a study

Parsons explains that while there is no immediate cause for panic, the ongoing sinking process increases the vulnerability to flooding.

"It’s not something to panic about immediately, but there’s this ongoing process that increases the risk of inundation from flooding."

Is it just New York that risks sinking?

No, the threat exists for all the coastal cities worldwide.

Researchers caution that it's not just New York that faces this danger. The risks, as per the authors, will be shared by many other coastal cities around the world as the climate crisis deepens.

They assert that the combination of tectonic and human-induced subsidence, along with other factors, all indicate a growing danger for coastal and riverfront regions.

As per the study, Tianjin, located in China, holds the distinction of being the fastest-sinking coastal city worldwide, with a subsidence rate of 5.2 cm per year.

Apart from Tianjin and Mumbai, the study examined land subsidence in 99 countries around the world. Scientists have attributed the severity of both these disasters to the damning effects of global warming.

As per Parsons, proactive planning is the way. He stressed that proactive planning is important for New York and other coastal cities. He said that vulnerable cities "have to get planning for this. If you get repeated exposure to seawater, you can corrode steel and destabilise buildings, which you clearly don’t want. Flooding also kills people, too, which is probably the greatest concern."

Researchers behind the study published in the Earth’s Future journal warn that "a deeply concentrated population of 8.4 million people faces varying degrees of hazard from inundation in New York City." Why is New York sinking? Also read | Mumbai is sinking in the sea, says a study Parsons explains that while there is no immediate cause for panic, the ongoing sinking process increases the vulnerability to flooding. "It’s not something to panic about immediately, but there’s this ongoing process that increases the risk of inundation from flooding." Is it just New York that risks sinking? No, the threat exists for all the coastal cities worldwide. Researchers caution that it's not just New York that faces this danger. The risks, as per the authors, will be shared by many other coastal cities around the world as the climate crisis deepens. At least one worker died and five others were injured after a four-story parking facility collapsed in New York City's lower Manhattan near Pace University and the New York Stock Exchange on Tuesday (April 18). Footage shared by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday showed a rescue operation underway and multiple cars stacked on top of one another amid crumpled slabs of concrete. John Esposito, the chief of fire operations at the New York City Fire Department, said that one worker was pronounced dead on the scene, four more were hospitalised for injuries, and a sixth individual who was injured denied medical treatment. Esposito described all six people as workers who were inside the parking structure when it collapsed. The chief of fire operations said robotic devices were then deployed. 'It all happened so fast': Eyewitnesses recount collapse As per the Reuters, report, eyewitnesses said the collapse (of the parking structure) was swift and without warning. "It all happened so fast," said Thai Nguyen, who lives in Chinatown and is a manager of the nearby Kollective Klub, told the news agency. "Our store is two buildings from the parking garage, and we also have a hotel next to us. People ran inside asking if they could take refuge inside our store," Nguyen, 35, added. Sandy Imhoff, who lives in an apartment on the same street, said she fled her home with her two cats when her building began to shudder from the force of the collapse. Imhoff added that everyone in her building was able to evacuate. Online records from the New York City Department of Buildings showed that the parking structure, at the site of the collapse, was cited for 45 violations, including 25 since 2003, many related to its elevators. A filing in 2003 said ceiling slab cracks existed as well as defective concrete with exposed rear cracks. The filing also said that a penalty of $800 was paid for the violation. In New York City, not only humans, but dogs are also getting high. A rise in the intake of cannabis after the city legalised adult recreational use of the drug in 2021 has led to more dogs accidentally eating dropped marijuana products on streets and getting hospitalised.

According to the New York Times (NYT) newspaper, veterinarians are witnessing several cases a week, which was once a case per month.

Several pet owners say that their dogs are running into more dropped cannabis on the streets during walks. Though most dogs recover, the symptoms from consuming cannabis have petrified pet lovers.

Among the most common symptoms found in dogs are: loss of balance and difficulty walking, nausea, sleepiness and hallucinations.

Adding further problem is that some owners don’t even realise for days that their dogs had chewed on a joint while out on a walk.

In New York City, even dogs are getting high

A claim made by a guest on comedian Joe Rogan's podcast has set off treasure hunters to New York City's East River to look for potentially valuable prehistoric mammoth bones. Despite a lack of evidence to support the claim, treasure seekers using boats, diving apparatuses and equipped with technology like remote-operated cameras have been searching for the valuable piece of fossil that had allegedly been dumped in the 1940s.

It all began when John Reeves, an Alaskan gold miner, appeared on “The Joe Rogan Experience” for an episode that aired December 30.

In that show, he talked about his land, where he has personally unearthed numerous age-old bones and tusks.

Reeves said that under previous ownership, a lot of digging was done in the first half of the 20th century looking for gold, but what was unearthed was a trove of prehistoric mammal remains.

He claimed that some of that material was brought to New York City decades ago to be handed over to the American Museum of Natural History. But in that material, some fossils and bones deemed unsuitable for the museum were later dumped into the river.

Reeves cited a draft of a report put together by three men, including one who worked at the museum, that included a reference to these fossils and bones, reports AP news agency.

“I'm going to start a bone rush," Reeves told Rogan, while reading from the draft that gave out the location: East River Drive, which is now known as the FDR Drive, at around 65th Street.

“We'll see if anybody out there's got a sense of adventure," he said, adding, “Let me tell you something about mammoth bones, mammoth tusks —they're extremely valuable.”

And since then, a hoard of treasure seekers has been assembling at the river in the hopes of uncovering those potential valuable troves.

“I think the chances are just as good as the lottery. And people buy those tickets every day,” said Don Gann, 35, of New Jersey, a commercial diver who's been out on the water since early last week.

New York City: Three cops injured in machete attack on New Year's Eve; suspect shot

In a historic move, New York opened its first legal recreational marijuana dispensary in Manhattan's heart on Thursday.

Around 100 citizens queued outside the dispensary in East Village, New York City, which is being managed by the non-profit Housing Works, an organisation that works for AIDS patients and homeless people.

Speaking about the opening of a marijuana dispensary, Governor Kathy Hochul said, "The first legal adult-use cannabis sales mark a historic milestone in New York's cannabis industry."

In her statement, Hochul said that she expects the city to serve "as a national model for the safe, equitable and inclusive industry we are now building."

Ex-felons granted first licenses

The government authorities granted 36 groups or individuals, including Housing Works, for the first time license for a legal marijuana shop on November 21.

New York City aims at granting the first 150 licenses to traders who were earlier convicted of selling or possessing cannabis.

The city's goal is to mend decades of the disproportionate and unfair impact of the prohibition of marijuana, which has left a negative impact on African American and Hispanic communities.

The governor said that whatever tax will be collected from the marijuana dispensaries will "be invested in communities across the state to support public schools, addiction services, mental health services, housing and other community-based programmes."

Addressing the reporters, New York state senator Liz Krueger said that the opening of legal marijuana dispensaries will help "those most impacted by the failed cannabis criminalisation policies of the past."

A real monetary gain

Hard-line Mayor Eric Adams, who was once a police officer, agreed that the dispensary has economic benefits, stating that the "legal cannabis market could be a real boon to New York's economic recovery... through increased tax revenues".

In the shop's festive atmosphere, founder of Housing Works Charles King said that he was "eager to reinvest the profits to provide essential services to tens of thousands of New Yorkers who need it".

Manhattan borough president Mark Levine attended the shop's opening and purchased cannabis products, which included jelly beans.

It has been more than a year since consuming cannabis has been made legal for adults over the age of 21 in New York. As per City Hall's estimation, $1.3 billion should be earned in sales by 2023 and around 19,000 to 24,000 new jobs should be created in the next three years.
