IPL 2018: Throwback to some acrobatic catches in history of IPL

Sunrisers Hyderabad, popularly known as "The Orange Army," came into the existence in 2012 when they replaced former Hyderabad-based franchise Deccan Chargers after they were controversially terminated in the Indian Premier League.

The franchise is owned by Kalanithi Maran of Sun TV channel Network and has Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, as its home ground.

They have a glorious record when they made it to the playoffs in the first season and claimed the IPL trophy in 2016.

Hyderabad always believed in having a power-pack bowling but it has been compromising with its batting side.

If we talk about this year's squad of Sunrisers Hyderabad, then again Hyderabad has decked-up talented bowlers as their "trump cards", who will be guided by Lankan legend, Muttiah Muralitharan as their bowling coach.

Hyderabad had retained Indian pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar for Rs 8.5 crore. The Indian pacer displayed his brilliance in India's recent tour to South Africa.

The spin department is quite strong as they the Orange Army has invested in Afghanistan's spin-star Rashid Khan who has a terrific record of 135 wickets in 91 T20s, averaging 15.14 at under 6 runs an over.

The in-form Ranji bowler Thangarasu Natarajan who played for Karnataka can also be a valuable wicket-taker. England bowler Chris Jordan might give a boost to the squad with his pace and swing.

Mehdi Hasan and Shakib Al Hasan of Bangladesh will provide variation in bowling, which is necessary for IPL that deals with injuries on regular basis due to a hectic schedule.

When it comes to batting, the top order is very aggressive as they have power hitter Shikhar Dhawan and Captain David Warner.

Apart from that, they have New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, who will provide stability at the crucial No-3 position.

The middle order is quite settled with Manish Pandey, Carlos Brathwaite, Wriddhiman Saha and the experienced Shakib-Al-Hasan.

Yusuf Pathan (IPL career batting strike rate of 145.49) will add value to the team with his destructive batting.

They have released some known players like Yuvraj Singh, Ben Cutting, Mustafizur Rahman, Ben Laughlin, Moises Henriques.

The squad is well balanced and the bench is very strong but Hyderabad have invested quite a lot in Manish Pandey, in that place they could have opted for some another batsman.

Under the guidance of coach Tom Moody, VVS Laxman and leadership of David Warner, the Orange Army is a strong contender in IPL-XI.

Here is the squad list of Sunrisers Hyderabad:

Retained:

David Warner (12.5 cr)

Bhuvneshwar Kumar (8.5 cr)

Purchased:

IPL 2018: Squad analysis of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Afghan bowler Rashid Khan is the trump card

Several eyebrows were raised from different quarters when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced Dinesh Karthik as its new skipper, replacing Gautam Gambhir, for the XIth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, his splendid knock in recently concluded Nidahas Trophy, which took India to an impossible victory, has ended all the speculations being raised on his batting ability.

His brilliant cameo of 29 runs off just 8 balls stole all the limelight as he hit a last-ball six to power India to a four-wicket win.

But in IPL, it will be Karthik's consistency to score runs and cricketing experience which KKR will be counting on.

The two-time champions will be entering the upcoming edition with lightest squad of only 19 players making their way into the franchise.

Hence, it would be fascinating to see how KKR performs under Karthik's leadership.

During the IPL auctions, Kolkata invested a lot on young uncapped talent, with India U-19 stars Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi making their way to the team.

Nagarkoti and Mavi impressed with their speeds in the ongoing U-19 World Cup and were bought by KKR for Rs 3.6 crore and Rs 3 crore respectively.

Apart from the two speedsters, KKR also bought U-19 top-order batsman Shubman Gill who scored three fifties in four matches at the U-19 World Cup.

The franchise spent Rs 1.8 crore to buy his services for the upcoming season.

However, the strength in the squad, once again, lies in the spin bowling department.

The franchise retained West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine, who became one of the key figures in the Gambhir era. With an uncanny ability to take wickets in crucial moments, Narine is surely one player on which the team can reply on.

After Narine, KKR also retained Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav via Right-to-Match which will further add to their spin bowling arsenal.

Another smart buy of KKR was batsman Chris Lynn. The Australian explosive was bought for Rs 9.6 crore and he can be a one-man army for the side.

Jamaican first-class cricketer Andre Russell will also remain Karthik’s go-to option in this edition of the cash-rich tournament.

Meanwhile, the one gap which KKR failed to fill is of having any leadership figure in the squad. After Gambhir’s departure, KKR should have looked for a player who can help the side get stability during crucial stages.

Dinesh Karthik current form is a positive development for the side but it will be interesting to see him perform the role of captain.

Another loose area in the team is of having only 19 players in the squad, and with a long tournament in hand, a weak bench strength might cause troubles for them.

Even if one or two players pick up an injury, the side will find it hard to find replacements in the bench.

But overall, the side is strong on spin

Retained:

IPL 2018: Here's the full schedule and timings of all matches

Indian Premier League's (IPL) widely celebrated franchise, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are coming back into the scheme of things after facing two-year suspension for alleged spot-fixing.

The 11th edition of premier league is just around the corner with the Yellow Brigade already becoming the cynosure of social media and cricket fans with their comprehensive team roster to be led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

As the CSK will take on holders Mumbai Indians to kick-start the 2018 edition on April 7 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, here's an overall analysis of the newly formed team.

Chennai retained Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja before the auction.

They have also made some exciting buys in the auction, with Dwayne Bravo, Imran Tahir, Shane Watson, Murali Vijay, Mark Wood, and Harbhajan Singh set to play for the franchise, this year.

The team surprised everyone when they bought former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson for Rs 4 crore, which was four times his base price.

Being one of the most successful franchises in IPL cricket, the team is weak when it comes to Indian medium pacers. The team will enter the ground with over-reliance on foreign seemers.

Apart, Shardul Thakur, who has some international experience and Deepak Chahar with experience in few IPL games, the team relies on foreign seamers.

Ravindra Jadeja, Imran Tahir, Karn Sharma, Harbhajan Singh, and Mitchell Santner forms their spin bowling department along with the part-timers, Suresh Raina and Kedar Jadhav.

Other than this, it would be important for CSK skipper Dhoni to return in his form.

Many cricketing experts raised serious questions over CSK's ability to win games in seamer-friendly conditions.

In the last few years, the right-hand batsman's abilities have been questioned a lot as his big hitting seems to be on a downward curve.

The former Indian captain’s strike rate in the IPL 2017 was a poor 115, considering his strike rate was 163 and 149 in IPL 2013 and 2014 respectively.

As per a record, in 2017, Dhoni managed to score only 15 boundaries and 16 sixes in 16 matches.

However, CSK has the most experienced players in this squad with 10 out of 25 of them being above the age of 30.

The list includes key players like Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni, Shane Watson, Dwayne Bravo, Harbhajan Singh, Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir and Kedar Jadhav, and most of them are expected to start every IPL game.

Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya recently revealed in an interview that he used to hide his car for almost two years as he could not pay the EMI.

Pandya, who also plays for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, came up through the ranks in the domestic circuit and soon found himself donning the coveted blue jersey.

The cricketer also spoke about how he struggled before gaining recognition and how his and his brother's hard work paid off.

"No one knew that we had struggled for three years when we didn't have a single penny. Saving five to ten rupees was a big trouble for us. I still remember during IPL, before that we won the national T20 in South Africa, Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament and Krunal and I got around Rs 70 thousand each. I had told my brother that we would survive on this money for some time because we were struggling for three years," Pandya told a television channel.

"We hadn't paid the EMI of our car for two years and used to hide the car as we did not want the car to be taken away. Everything we earned in those three years was about paying the EMI and having food at the table and nothing else," he said.

But life took a u-turn for Hardik, when he featured for MI in the IPL in 2015 as they lifted the title for the second time.

"God is kind. My first year with MI, we won the IPL and then I got a cheque of Rs 50 lakhs. From there, I paid off the EMI of our old car and bought a new car as well. Imagine, three months back we were struggling and fighting for money and within three months I have Rs 50-60 lakhs in my pocket. It was all about saving at that time. From there, things changed," Hardik was quoted as saying.

The Baroda all-rounder has played 37 matches for MI, scored 406 runs and recorded an impressive strike-rate of 142.45 and also has 10 wickets to his name. Apart from this, the right-handed batsman has played three Tests, 29 ODIs and 24 T20s for India and scored 178, 584 and 140 runs respectively.

Mumbai Indian fans should be weary of one man in today's final - MS Dhoni, after all he is etched in their memory as the man who hit that 'super six' in the 2011 World Cup final at the Wankhede against Sri Lanka. Mumbai coach Mahela Jayawardene who was at the receiving end on that day will also be a tad uncomfortable when the Ranchi star comes out to bat.

MS has always relished a final encounter be it the ICC T20, 50-over World Cup, Champions trophy but importantly in the context of the IPL - the former Indian captain has featured in most IPL finals - seven including this year's clash with Mumbai Indians. Rohit Sharma's men should be very afraid.

Dhoni has been quietly racking up the runs in this edition, focussing on returns-280 runs in 15 matches @ an average of 114. One of the great finishers of the game, he has hit more sixes than boundaries in this season -14 boundaries and 16 sixes, in fact he has hit more sixes compared to boundaries for the first time in this season- maybe the best of Dhoni is yet to come.

Rising Pune Supergiants have a huge psychological edge over Rohit Sharma's men having beaten them in the first qualifier easily by 20 runs and outclassed them at home & away in this season. Dhoni left a few scars on the Mumbai bowlers in the first qualifier after he hit a quickfire 40 off 26 balls with five sixes in a crucial 73-run stand with Manoj Tiwary which tilted the game in Pune's favour on Tuesday.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and coach would have to sit down with Malinga, McClenaghan and Bumrah to devise a plan to stop the Dhoni onslaught, maybe introducing Harbhajan would be a good ploy. The trick is to get Dhoni early and not allow him to settle down because once he is able play himself in, the death overs become a nightmare for the opposition as Bumrah and McClenaghan found out to their horror at the Wankhede.

Pune Supergiants have all to play for in their debut appearance in the final as they will be dismantaled after the final match and just like Chennai Superkings who no longer exist but have left an indelible mark, Pune spearheaded by Dhoni power under Australian Steve Smith can outclass the star studded Mumbai Indians.

IPL final: Mumbai Indians beat Rising Pune Supergiant by one run

Gautam Gambhir's Kolkata Knight Riders have overcome the first hurdle in the knock-out phase by toppling Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL qualifier. Gambhir's men will now face the 'real test' as they take on Mumbai Indians in the second qualifier on Friday.

Skipper Gautam Gambhir will obviously feel uncomfortable with the overall statistics since his team has lost 13 of the 18 encounters so far against the Mumbai side in the IPL. In fact, it has got worse for Kolkata this season with Gambhir's men losing both matches - home & away - to Mumbai this year. On both occasions, Kolkata were beaten comfortably by 6 wickets by Mumbai.

Kolkata Knight Riders may have peaked too early in this IPL, after making a mixed start winning the first game against Gujarat Lions by an emphatic 10-wicket margin, the Knights lost to Mumbai Indians by 4 wickets but they quickly regrouped and went on a winning streak winning three games in succession against Kings XI Punjab, Sunrisers Hyderabad & Delhi Daredevils but lost unexpectedly against Gujarat Lions at home.

Also Read: KKR beat Sunrisers by 7 wickets

The defeat spurred the Knights to win the next three games in succession against Daredevils, Rising Pune Supergiants & Royal Challengers Bangalore which catapulted them to the top of the table. However, after a three-game high, the Knight Riders slipped down the table to end in fourth place managing to sneak into the qualifiers.

In the match against Sunrisers, Kolkata showed their mettle by first restricting Warner's men and then knocking off the target with four balls to spare with skipper Gautam Gambhir leading from the front, unbeaten on 32(2 sixes, 2 fours) in just 19 balls after his team lost 3 wickets for just 12 runs in a rain-hit match. The Knights finally reached the 48-run target in 5.2 overs.

In Friday's eliminator, Gautam Gambhir will have to lead from the front. The KKR skipper will have to open the innings if Kolkata intends to take on a rival against whom they haven't won a single game this season. The KKR top order has to fire and bowlers led by Umesh Yadav will have to come out all guns blazing.

KKR will probably start with a slight advantage having seen the nature of the Bengaluru pitch first-hand just a couple of hours ago. Even then, Mumbai Indians will not hold back led by Rohit Sharma they will have their own plan to checkmate KKR.

T-20 fans have never had it so good, may the best team win!

IPL Qualifier 2, Kolkata Knight Riders vs Mumbai Indians: Gambhir must lead from the front

Kolkata Knight Riders' Indian Premier League play-off fate hangs in balance after suffering a defeat against Mumbai Indians in their last round league match here today.

Chasing 174 to win, KKR were restricted to 164-8 by Mumbai Indians, who dished out a disciplined bowling effort at Eden Gardens here.

This is the sixth loss for KKR in the tournament. They are now placed at the third place with 18 points. Their fate now depends on the match between Kings XI Punjab (14) and Rising Pune Supergiants (16) tomorrow.

If Punjab wins tomorrow then three teams will be on 16 points and it will come down to the run-rate to decide the play-off line-up.

Mumbai, who are already through to the play-offs, consolidated their position at the top of the table with 20 points after their 10th victory.

Manish Pandey (33) was the top-scorer for KKR but the hosts lost too many wickets early in the innings to put pressure on the middle and lower-order.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians tested their bench with much aplomb as Ambati Rayudu and Saurabh Tiwary slammed half- centuries to lift them to 173-5.

Making his debut for Mumbai Indians, Tiwary seized the opportunity with a glittering 43-ball 52 (9x4) while Rayudu who made a comeback after more than a month was Mumbai's top- scorer with a spectacular 63 from 37 balls (6x4, 3x6).

For KKR, Trent Boult (2/30) took two wickets, while Ankit Rajpoot (1/14) and Kuldeep Yadav (1/25) took one wicket each after skipper Gautam Gambhir won the toss and elected to bowl in the match which was delayed due to rain and thunderstorm.

Kolkata Knight Riders suffer nine-run loss to Mumbai Indians

Skipper Rohit Sharma played a sublime knock to lead Mumbai Indians to a five-wicket win over laggards Royal Challengers Bangalore, ensuring themselves of a berth at the IPL play-offs, here today.

RCB, opting to bat, put up 162 for eight with Ab de Villiers hammering 43 off 27 balls.

It was a rather straightforward chase for Mumbai as the home team reeled off 59 runs in the last six overs, courtesy some crisp hitting from Rohit, who ended with 56 off 37 balls.

Hardik Pandya remained unbeaten with the captain, scoring 14 off nine balls.

With the win at Wankhede, Mumbai moved to the top of the points table with eight wins out of 10 games fetching them 16 points.

On the other hand, it was another disappointing performance from the star-studded RCB, who are very much out of contention for a play-off berth. The loss was their eighth in 11 matches.

Fittingly, Rohit hit the winning runs, a cracking drive past mid-off. It was one of the six boundaries he hit alongside a maximum.

The quick start to the chase was provided by Jos Buttler (33 off 21) and Nitish Rana (27 off 28) after Parthiv Patel was out for a first ball duck.

Earlier, Mitchell McClenaghan claimed three wickets as Mumbai Indians produced a disciplined bowling performance to restrict RCB to a modest total.

Besides McClenaghan (3/34), Krunal Pandya (2/34) took two wickets, while Karn Sharma (1/23) and Jasprit Bumrah (1/33) accounted for wicket apiece.

For RCB, de Villiers emerged as the top-scorer after he blasted three fours and as many sixes during his 27-ball innings, while Pawan Negi (35) and Kedar Jadhav (28) provided the late charge to take the team past the 150-mark.

RCB lost their first wicket in the fourth over when Mandeep Singh (17) went for the slog sweep and was caught by Hardik.

In the sixth over, McClenaghan removed Virat Kohli (20) when the RCB skipper flicked a slower ball straight to short midwicket and Rohit took a simple catch, reducing the visitors slipped to 40 for two.

De Villiers then blasted McClenaghan over backward point for a four before sending him over sweeper cover for a maximum as RCB scored 52-2 in the powerplay overs.

The South African gave Krunal Pandya the same treatment as RCB accumulated 13 runs off the ninth over.

After 10 overs, they were 80 for 2 but Travis Head (12) holed out to Hardik at deep midwicket and RCB slumped to 85-3.

De Villiers brought up the 100 with a six off Krunal over the square leg boundary but was dismissed in the next delivery by the same bowler for the fourth time in as many meetings.

Shane Watson's poor run continued and he went down cheaply again to leave RCB struggling at 108-5 in 13.4 overs.

Negi and Jadhav then steadied the innings, taking ones and twos to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Negi finally exploded in the 18th over, producing a couple of sixes off Lasith Malinga over extra cover and long- off, before smashing a six over long-on boundary in the next over to bring up the 150.

The final over yielded just five runs as McClenaghan dismissed Negi and Jadhav in successive deliveries, while S Aravind ran himself out while looking for a single.

IPL: Mumbai seal playoffs spot after win over Bangalore

Jasprit Bumrah produced one of the finest death overs in the history of Indian Premier League as Mumbai Indians nearly committed harakiri before edging out Gujarat Lions in a thrilling Super Over finish.

Chasing a modest target of 154, Mumbai Indians were cruising along at 104 for 2 in 13 overs and then 127 for 4 in 16 overs. An inspired spell by James Faulkner (2/34) and Basil Thampi (3/29) coupled with Ravindra Jadeja's brilliance in the field saw Mumbai Indians nearly pull off a defeat from the jaws of victory.

There were four run-outs including three in the last seven balls as Mumbai Indians were all-out for 153 off the final ball.

The One Over Eliminator saw Mumbai Indians score 11 with Kieron Pollard hitting Faulkner for a boundary and a six.

Defending 11 runs, Bumrah bowled a no-ball and wide in his first three deliveries but displayed brilliant variations of slower deliveries including a few in the blockhole as Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum could manage only six runs.
Each of his deliveries were unplayable proving why he is an asset fpr the Indian team in limited overs format.

The seventh win took them to 14 points and on par with Kolkata Knight Riders. One more victory from the remaining five games will seal their spot in the last four.

For Gujarat Lions, the sixth defeat in nine matches further diminished their chances of qualifying for the next stage.

First it was the collective effort from the bowlers that enabled them to restrict Gujarat Lions to a manageable 153 for 9 with Krunal Pandya (3/14) doing the star turn.

Lasith Malinga (2/33), Jasprit Bumrah (2/32) and Harbhajan Singh (1/23) also played their part to perfection.

Parthiv Patel then punched his way to 70 off 44 balls with the help nine fours and a six setting the platform for a victory before it all got messed up.

James Faulkner bowled a good 14th over where he removed Rohit Sharma (5) and Parthiv. Basil Thampi then removed Kieron Pollard (15) to reduce MI to 127 for 5, still needing 27 runs for victory. However Krunal (29) kept his cool but was run-out off the last delivery of the final over bowled by Irfan Pathan.

Earlier, Gujarat Lions suffered a batting collapse before a rear-guard action saw them post a decent 153 for 9 after opting to bat.

Save young Ishan Kishan (48 off 35 balls) and the seasoned Ravindra Jadeja (28), the other Gujarat Lions batsmen were guilty of playing loose shots with home team reeling at 101 for 7.

It was Andrew Tye's 12-ball-25 with two sixes and two fours and 42-run eighth wicket stand with Faulkner (21 off 27 balls) that atleast provided Gujarat with a total to fight.

This was after the former India U-19 captain Kishan's attractive strokeplay provided a solid platform which they failed to capitalise.

Malinga made a successful comeback into the team removing the dangerous Brendon McCullum (6) and in-form Aaron Finch (1) to make it easier for the other bowlers.

Harbhajan was once again at his parsimonious best. He found an able ally in left-arm spinner Krunal as the duo tightened the noose around the Lions batting line-up.

In fact, Krunal after fireworks with the bat was today lethal with the ball.

The Harbhajan-Krunal duo gave away only 37 runs between them in the eight overs bowled and also poached four wickets.

More importantly, they bowled as many as 27 dot balls. Add Malinga's 10 to it, Mumbai Indians' three bowlers in all produced more than six maiden overs to make life miserable for the Lions batsmen.

The start was good for Lions despite Malinga cleaning up McCullum. Kishan hit some fantastic strokes including a six each off Malinga and Mitchell McClenaghan. Malinga was smashed over mid-wicket while McClenaghan was hooked for good measure. He also hit six boundaries.

But once skipper Suresh Raina failed to check his shot off a Jasprit Bumrah delivery, things started falling apart.

Finch (1) was played on off Malinga.

Dinesh Karthik (2) was stumped when Krunal deliberately pushed one down the leg.

At 56 for 4, Jadeja joined Kishan as they added 27 runs before Harbhajan, who had kept the Jharkhand left-hander quiet after the first over got him to loft one that was taken by Pollard at long.

Jadeja and Irfan Pathan were snuffed out before Tye and Faulkner joined hands to do some damage control.

(PTI)

IPL: Superb Bumrah wins it for Mumbai Indians in 'Super Over'

Mumbai Indians' bowlers rose to the occasion after team's tough time with the bat as the hosts recorded their sixth win on the trot with a comfortable 14-run victory over Delhi Daredevils in an IPL match, here tonight.

Daredevils, believed to have one of the best attacks, restricted the hosts to 142 for eight but were terrible in run chase, managing only 128 for seven.

The visitors were gasping at 24 for six at one stage before a 91-run stand between South African pair of debutant Kagiso Rabada (44) and Chris Morris (52) raised their hopes. However, it only reduced the margin of defeat.

Kiwi paceman Mitchell McClenaghan (3/24) scalped three batsmen to rock the Delhi top and middle order and Jasprit Bumrah (2/21) broke the seventh-wicket stand between the South Africans to shape his side's win.

Delhi needed 30 runs off the final 12 balls but Bumrah and Hardik Pandya denied the rivals a memorable win after they made remarkable recovery through Rabada and Morris.

Leg-spinner Amit Mishra returned exceptional figures 4-0-18-2 while Australian paceman Pat Cummins (2/20) also chipped in with two wickets in Daredevils' good bowling show.

It was a collective bowling effort from Daredevils with Rabada (1/30) and skipper Zaheer Khan also contributing in choking the Mumbai line-up which is full of devastating batsmen.

However, the batsmen could not complement the good work done by the bowlers and suffered their fourth loss in six matches.
Mumbai Indians on the other hand consolidated their position at the top with sixth win in a row.

Earlier, It was Hardik Pandya's 24 off 23 balls and West Indian Kieron Pollard's 26 off 29 balls that helped the home side to go beyond the 140 run mark after being 84/5 at one stage.

Mumbai managed to score only 32 runs in the last five overs as Daredevils skipper Zaheer made some good bowling changes.
Daredevils were also brilliant in the field as they managed to run out three Mumbai batsman including Hardik. For the visitors,

Australian paceman Pat Cummins (2/20), South African Kagiso Rabada (1/30), who made his IPL debut, were impressive.

Openers Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler stitched 37 for the first wicket in four overs. Buttler made his intentions clear as he hit a six off Chris Morris in the second over, followed by a boundary.

Buttler, the star of Mumbai's game against Kings XI Punjab, got a life on 11 after being dropped by wicket-keeper Rishab Pant on the last ball of the second over.

The Englishman then hammered Rabada for a maximum over the mid-wicket fence. However, in the same over, Rabada, clinched his first IPL wicket as he cleaned up Parthiv (8).

Buttler struck Zaheer for two boundaries in the fifth over. But Buttler?s stay at the crease was cut short by a brilliant throw by Sanju Samson, who came from short cover to hit the stumps as Mumbai slumped to 47/2.

Buttler made 28 off 18 balls, hitting two sixes and three fours.

In the eight over, Cummins removed in-form Nitish Rana (8) as he gave a sitter to Corey Anderson at deep mid-wicket.

In the very next over, skipper Rohit Sharma (5) again fell to a leg spinner, this time Mishra as he was caught by Cummins at deep backward square leg.

In the 13th over, Mishra claimed his second wicket as he sent back Krunal Pandya for 17 as he edge to stumper Pant. Half of the Mumbai side was back to the pavilion on 84.

IPL: Mumbai Indians out-bowl Delhi Dardevils, win by 14 runs

Jos Buttler went on a rampage with a breathtaking 37-ball-77 as Mumbai Indians cantered home by eight wickets against Kings XI Punjab maintaining their pole position in the Indian Premier League, here tonight.

Hashim Amla's superb 103 enabled Punjab put up a competitive 198 for 4 in 20 overs but Buttler made a mockery of the target with Mumbai Indians knocking off the runs in only 15.3 overs.

If Amla was sublime, Buttler's power-packed shots were scary as he hit seven fours and five sixes, completely overshadowing the effort from the illustrious South African.

The talented Nitish Rana (62 no off 34 balls) was equally exhilarating as he also sent the Kings XI bowlers on a leatherhunt hitting as many as seven sixes. Buttler-Rana stand got MI 85 runs in less than 8 overs.

Rana got the 'Purple Cap' back and finished the match with a six off Mohit Sharma.

Mumbai now have 10 points from six games having won five matches in a row while KXIP slumped to their fourth defeat.

Chasing a near 200-target needed a mandatory good start and Jos Buttler was finally up for it as he punished the two 'Sharmas' -- Ishant and Sandeep with equal disdain.

The pint-sized Parthiv Patel also matched him stroke for stroke as they basically finished the contest in the Powerplay overs itself adding 81 runs.

Parthiv's contribution was 37 off 18 balls, hitting four boundaries and two sixes.

Both the batsmen matched each other stroke for stroke as the 50 came up in the fourth over itself.

If Sandeep with his military medium pace was getting tonked by Buttler for bowling fuller deliveries, Parthiv was seen using Ishant's bounce whipping him for a six behind square.

Buttler was seen muscling Sandeep ovr extra cover as Glenn Maxwell had no answer to this onslaught.

Finally, Marcus Stoinis bowled a slower one as Parthiv mistimed it to Maxwell standing at the circle at mid-off pouched an easy catch.

Earlier Amla's classy hundred powered Kings XI Punjab to a competitive 198/4 after being put into bat first.

Playing shots that would delight the purists, Amla spanked all the Mumbai Indians bowlers en route his unbeaten 104 off 60 balls, which included as many as six sixes apart from eight boundaries.

In fact five of the half dozen sixes were hit off Sri Lankan slinger Lasith Malinga (0/58 in 4 overs).

There were straight hits, shirt arm jabs over long-on, slashes over point, hook, and a majestic pull-shot in 'Nataraja style', which brought up his first hundred in shortest format as well second of this edition.

Skipper Glenn Maxwell, on his part played a typically breezy innings smashing 40 off 18 balls with the help of four boundaries and three sixes.

It was the 3rd wicket partnership between Amla and Maxwell that produced 83 runs in only 5.3 overs to send the Mumbai attack in complete disarray.

The last six overs produced an astounding 87 runs after KXIP were 111 for 2 at the end of the 14th over.

It was the 15th over of the innings were Maxwell decided to tee off taking 28 runs off the Mitchell McLenaghan over.

The KXIP skipper hit the hapless New Zealand international for three sixes and two fours as he got the required momentum.

The very next over from Malinga saw Amla punce on him taking 22 off that over and suddenly 50 runs came off two overs.

While Jasprit Bumrah cleaned up Maxwell but Amla was well set by then as he showed one and all that a century in shortest format could be scored playing all the proper cricketing shots. There were drives on the up, cut shots and also lofted shot in-front of the square as well as behind the square.

The true nature of the pitch also helped Amla, who infact enjoyed Malinga's back of the length deliveries.

It was baffling as senior pro Harbhajan Singh, who gave away only 12 runs in 2 overs, didn't get to finish his quota of overs.

Mumbai Indians pull off thrilling four-wicket win over Kolkata Knight Riders

Captain Steven Smith's love affair with Pune continued as he led Rising Pune Supergiant to a seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians in an IPL match, dishing out an unbelievable unbeaten knock under pressure in a tense last-over finish, here today.

Smith finished off the match with two consecutive sixes in the final over and remained not out on 84 from 54 balls as Pune chased down the target of 185 with one ball to spare as the match went down the wire.

Former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni's inability to finish off matches put pressure on the home side and Smith, at the other end, pulled of a sensational innings at the same ground where he had smashed a century to set up a memorable win for Australia in the recent Test series.

Pune needed 13 runs from the final over and Smith hit a six off the fourth ball, picking a Kieron Pollard slow ball needing another four for a win from two balls. He did not wait for the final delivery and hit the fifth ball of the final over to the stands to the huge roar of home crowd to reach 187 for 3 in 19.5 overs.

India batsman Ajinkya Rahane also made a significant contribution as he hit a brilliant 60 from 34 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes.

Smith and Rahane stitched 58 runs for the second wicket from seven overs to lay the foundation for the run chase.

Pune began brightly but lost Mayank Agarwal (6) in the fourth over bowled by Mitchell McClenaghan and that put some brake on the quick start.

The other opener Ajinkya Rahane and captain Steven Smith batted sensibly with a mix of caution and aggression to take Pune to 93 for 1 at the halfway mark.

Rahane reached to his 32nd T20 fifty with a four off Hardik Pandya in the ninth over but he fell two overs later while attempting a pull shot with Nitish Rana taking a smart catch at deep square leg.

Rahane hit six boundaries and three sixes in his 34-ball knock and shared 58 runs for the second wicket with Smith.

Smith then dropped anchor and showed his class by hitting some exquisite shots to ensure that Pune remained in the hunt in his debut captaincy for the Pune side.

Smith was dropped on 36 off the bowling of McClenaghan with Nitish Rana being the culprit.

Mumbai raised some hopes of a win after Hardik Pandya dismissed Ben Stokes, this IPL season's costliest buy, for 21.

But it was shortlived as Smith snatched the game from the jaws of defeat.

Earlier, Hardik Pandya's late heroics took Mumbai Indians to 184 for 8 after leg-spinner Imran Tahir produced a sensational three-wicket burst in the space of 10 balls.

South African Tahir (3/28), who was unsold in the IPL auction and drafted in the Pune team as a late replacement, triggered a top-order collapse to put brakes on Mumbai's rollicking start after they were put into bat.

Mumbai did not have any substantial partnership after the opening wicket stand of 45 between Parthiv Patel (19) and Jos Buttler (38) before Pandya's late flourish took them to a competitive total. Pandya remained not out at 35 from 15 balls (1x4; 4x6) as Mumbai added 64 runs in the last five overs.

Tahir cleaned up Patel in his second ball of the match, giving Pune the first breakthrough after Mumbai had knocked off 41 runs in the first four overs. He dealt a body blow to Mumbai in his next over by sending back captain Rohit Sharma (3 off 7 balls) who tried to work Tahir's delivery to the leg side without any foot movement only to lose his stumps.

Just two balls later, Tahir dismissed opener Buttler in an LBW decision to rock the Mumbai innings. Butler, who hit three sixes and as many fours in his 19-ball knock, was a bit unlucky as it appeared the ball got an inside edge of his bat.

Butler had hit his England team-mate and this season's costliest buy Ben Stokes (1/36) for two consecutive sixes to set the tempo of the match.

Rajat Bhatia (2/14) had Ambati Rayudu caught and bowled for 10 before Mumbai reached 100-run mark in 13th over. Bhatia then cut short Krunal Pandya's (3) stay at the crease to just five balls to reduce Mumbai to 107 for five in the 14th over.

Nitish Rana tried to steady the Mumbai innings with a 28-ball 34 but he was also out in 16th over. Kieron Pollard was dismissed for 27 (17 balls; 3x4; 1x6) in the penultimate over by Stokes for the bowler's first IPL wicket.

Hardik Pandya then stunned the home crowd as he scored four sixes and a boundary to take 30 runs from the final over bowled by Ashok Dinda.
