Mumbai team players celebrate IPL 2019 win at Ambani's residence Antilia

The IPL prize distribution ceremony almost plunged into a controversy after CoA member Diana Edulji expressed her wish to give away the winners' trophy, going against the convention.&nbsp;

Eventually, as per existing convention, acting president CK Khanna handed over the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/mumbai-lift-4th-ipl-trophy-with-1-run-win-over-chennai-218193">winners' trophy to Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma</a>.

While Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai didn't attend the IPL final between Mumbai and Chennai, other two members Diana and Lt Gen (retd) Ravi Thodge were present in Hyderabad.

"Edulji gave away the winners' trophy at the Women's T20 Challenge in Jaipur and she wanted to give away the trophy here also.

However, it was learnt that Khanna showed an e-mail from acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhry to IPL COO Hemang Amin, stating that convention of president giving away the trophy could be followed," a BCCI official privy to the incident told PTI on the conditions of anonymity.

When Rai was asked for his view on the issue, he in turn asked whether there was any need to change the convention.

"It was Lt Gen Thodge, who categorically told the former India women's team captain that acting president Khanna should be allowed to handover the trophy and the matter should be put to an end. She was certainly not happy but had to go with the majority view in this case," said another BCCI source.

Rai and Edulji have had their share of differences on most of the issues and the CoA has been able to take a few concrete decisions of late after Lt Gen Thodge joined the panel.&nbsp;

When Khanna was contacted, he refused to comment on the issue while calls to Edulji went unanswered.

"I am learning in every game, every time I take the field. I have to credit the team as well, it is up to the boys to step up otherwise the captain is made to look foolish," Rohit added.&nbsp;

The situation was eerily similar to Rohit had faced in 2017 final when Mumbai&nbsp;beat the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiants by one run in another thrilling finish.

Then it was former Australian pacer Johnson, who defended 11 runs in the final over to pull-off a one-run victory.&nbsp;

It was that deja vu moment for the Rohit Sharma.

"I clearly remember when we won here in 2017, it was Mitchell Johnson who bowled that last over and defended only 10 (sic) runs. So yes, sometimes you've got to go with only instincts, sometimes you've got to go a little backwards and think what these experienced players have done and what they bring to the table," Rohit said.

IPL 2019 Final: Rohit Sharma explains his gamble of picking Lasith Malinga over Hardik Pandya in last over

The stage is set for the final clash of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl-2019">Indian Premier League 2019</a>, there couldn't be&nbsp;a better ending of the tournament as the two most successful franchises will square off&nbsp;in what promises to be another thrilling clash and it will be interesting to see which team goes home with its fourth title.&nbsp;

Mumbai and Chennai have played a total of 27 matches out of which Mumbai won 16 and Chennai managed to win 11.&nbsp;

Since 2015, they have played a total of nine&nbsp;matches and Chennai have defeated Mumbai just two times and Mumbai emerged victorious on seven occasions.&nbsp;

They have met three times in IPL finals, and Rohit &amp; Co defeated Dhoni's side twice.&nbsp;

Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai can certainly take confidence out of the fact that they have won three out of the four finals they have been part of, including the two against Chennai in 2013 and 2015.&nbsp;

Previously, eight of the 11 finals have been won by the team that won the toss.&nbsp;

If Imran Tahir makes the Chennai's&nbsp;playing XI, he will be the first 40-year old to compete in an IPL Final.

Imran Tahir needs two more wickets to become only the second spinner in IPL history to bag the Purple Cap; the only spinner to finish as the season’s highest wicket-taker was Pragyan Ojha, back in 2010.&nbsp;

It can't be disputed that Mumbai go into the final as the favourites, having beaten Chennai as many as three times earlier in the tournament including in the Qualifier 1.&nbsp;

However, statistics count for little going into the title fight with both teams being in the situation before multiple times.&nbsp;

IPL 2019: Players to watch out for in final clash between Chennai and Mumbai

The league stage is over and now the fight to book a finale berth will start as four teams, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi and Hyderabad, will clash against each other to with the Indian Premier League 2019 title.&nbsp;

The first Qualifier is between defending champions Chennai and table-toppers Mumbai, which is scheduled for May 7.&nbsp;

Chennai team has been patchy after a strong start and finished its league engagements with a six-wicket defeat to Punjab at Mohali on Sunday. &nbsp;

But Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side will be happy to return to their den to take on Mumbai, probably its biggest IPL rival, to decide which team seals a spot in the May 12 final. &nbsp;

Chennai boasts of a tremendous record at home this season, winning six of its seven games at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.&nbsp;

A defeat, however, will provide both the teams a second chance in Qualifier 2 on May 10. &nbsp;

The Chennai top-order has fired in fits and starts in the league phase and will need to come out all guns blazing against a formidable Mumbai bowling attack that includes Jasprit Bumrah (17 wickets), Lasith Malinga (15 wickets), the Pandya brothers (Hardik 14 wickets and Krunal 10 wickets), leggie Rahul Chahar (10 wickets) and possibly Mitchell McClenaghan. &nbsp;

Skipper Dhoni (Chennai's highest run-getter with 368 runs from 12 matches, 3 fifties) has been the mainstay of a rather inconsistent Chennai batting unit and along with openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis and Suresh Raina holds the key in Saturday's game as the usually fluent Ambati Rayudu has struggled to get going. &nbsp; &nbsp;

Chennai, however, will miss the services of the Kedar Jadhav, who sustained a freak shoulder injury in the match against Punjab. &nbsp;

But Jadhav wasn't in the best of form and his absence would open up a spot for either Murali Vijay or Dhruv Shorey.&nbsp;

Bowling has been Chennai's strong point so far this season and becomes even more potent on Chidambaram's sluggish wicket. &nbsp;

Imran Tahir (21 scalps), the second highest wicket-taker this season after Kagiso Rabada (25), has been at the forefront of an effective Chennai spin trio, also including veteran Harbhajan Singh and Ravindra Jadeja (both with 13 wickets each).&nbsp;

And the success of Tahir &amp; Co against the powerful Mumbai batting line-up could very well determine the course of the match. &nbsp;

Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma (386 runs), the impressive Quinton De Kock (492, third leading run-scorer), Hardik Pandya (380) and Kieron Pollard will be hard to stop once they get going and Chennai's bowlers have a tough task at hand. &nbsp;

The onus would also be on the ever-improving Deepak Chahar, who has taken 16 scalps so far, to pick up early wickets for Chennai and stifle the rival batting line-up.&nbsp;

Going by the head-to-head record this year, Mumbai holds an upperhand having won both its encounters against Chennai in the preliminary phase. &nbsp;

Mumabi's head coach Mahela Jayawardene would be aware of the job at hand and won't take Chennai lightly despite the Lions' recent wobbly form.&nbsp;

Chennai will certainly receive a boost by playing the Qualifier 1 at home with the crowd fully backing the team in what promises to be a cracker of a contest.

There is hardly anything to differentiate between the two sides as both CSK and MI have won the title three times earlier.&nbsp;

Mumbai thrashed Kolkata by nine wickets in their Indian Premier League (IPL) clash here on Sunday. Mumbai dominated the visitors throughout the match and with this defeat, Kolkata's campaign for this season of IPL came to an end.

Chasing a modest total of 134 runs, Mumbai got off to a decent start as the openers, Quinton de Kock and Rohit Sharma, stitched a 46-run partnership. De Kock in the fourth overcame vehemently as he hammered two sixes and a boundary to Andre Russell.

However, in the seventh over bowled by Prasidh Krishna De Kock tried to smack the ball but got a top edge and Dinesh Karthik caught a brilliant diving catch which ended De Kock's 30-run inning.

Suryakumar Yadav then joined the skipper and both played safely and did not play risky shots. However, they kept on adding scores and both Sharma (55*) and Yadav (46*) clinched an easy nine-wicket victory over the visitors.

Earlier, Kolkata were sent to bat first as Mumbai won the toss and opted to bowl first. Kolkata had a decent start as both the openers, Shubman Gill and Chris Lynn, stitched a 49-run partnership.

However, it was Lynn who kept the scoreboard running as Gill was finding it difficult to find a gap. Mumbai's Hardik Pandya provided his team with their first breakthrough in the name of Gill, who scored 9 runs off 16 balls.

Hardik Pandya then sent the other opener, Lynn (41), back to the pavilion in his next over. Robin Uthappa and skipper Dinesh Karthik then came out to bat. However, their partnership did not last long as Karthik (3) became a victim of Lasith Malinga.

Kolkata's most destructive batsman Andre Russell then came out to bat but he failed to put up a good show as he was sent back to the pavilion on a duck.

Nitish Rana then accompanied Uthappa and both played opted to play fearlessly and struck some astounding shots. Both formed a 47-run partnership before Malinga got hold of Rana (26).

Jasprit Bumrah continuing his great form with the ball bowled the last over of the inning and took two wickets which included the wicket of the set batsman Uthappa (40) while conceding just three runs, which helped the hosts to restrict Kolkata to just 133 runs after a loss of seven wickets.

IPL 2019: Mumbai defeat Hyderabad in super over, book play-off berth

KL Rahul and Chris Gayle are the two names that pop up immediately whenever Punjab comes to the field in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL). &nbsp;

The responsibility of chasing the mammoth target or setting a fighting total have always fallen on these two players. The best part is they haven't disappointed.&nbsp;

In the 12 games so far, Rahul has scored 550 runs to become the most dependent batsman of the franchise.&nbsp;

When asked what is the mantra behind his superb form and how does he see himself hitting such big scores, Rahul in an exclusive interview to WION, said it's not the individual score that matters&nbsp;to him but the games he can win for the team.

"I always aim very very high. So, for me, I don't start the season thinking 400-500 or 600 runs is good enough for me because that's not a goal or achievement for me. It's always about how many games in a season I win for my team, so that's is what my focus is always on."

Rahul was quick to add that he doesn't care even if he scores 300 runs in one season, provided he plays a role in helping Punjab win the games.

"It doesn't matter even if I get 300 runs in a season or 800 runs in the season. But if I do not win games for my team then I feel like I am not doing my job. So, that's is what I focus on. In a tournament like IPL, it is important that you start well and when you start well you get some confidence and form. And if you stay focussed then the confidence and form just carry&nbsp;on for the rest of the tournament. So, it has been the key for me in the last two seasons," the Punjab opener added.

In most of the games, Rahul has made a valiant effort with the bat but lacked support from the other end.&nbsp;

However, the scenario has been different till Gayle is on the crease with him.&nbsp;
&nbsp;
When asked if there is any set plan they follow when they enter the crease, Rahul said they just give it some time and access the conditions.

"We don't really go in with a set plan, because as opening batsmen we have the responsibility to go out there and access the conditions, especially when we are batting first, to see what would be a par score and how much we should get on a wicket like that and also see the opposition, see who are the guys we have to target."

"So for that, we go that first couple of overs we are going to look to play cricketing shots and just look to take our time. Moreover, we all know if Chris starts over then there is no worry about the run rate. We will always get 20 runs extra than the par score. So we just look to give ourselves a little time and access the conditions," the 27-year-old said.&nbsp;

Punjab had decent outings in the first half of the tournament before losing the plot in the all-important second phase.&nbsp;

The team have 10 points from 12 matches and are desperately eyeing a victory to remain in the contention for the IPL 2019 playoffs.

The performance of the team has degraded in the second phase, however, Kl Rahul stressed that just because the results haven't gone their way, it doesn' mean they have been outplayed.&nbsp;

"The passion, the determination has always been there to go out and give it our best. Ashwin said in his last interview that we have not been outplayed even once we have hung in there. We have scrapped all through and we have put up a great show and all are games have been gone down to the wire and the crowds have enjoyed it."

"And at the end of the day, it is about putting up a great show. But results haven't gone our way. Again that a habit, if you win a couple of games you get on a roll and it keeps going that way. We are hoping that we will find that rhythm."

Punjab will next lock horns with Kolkata in a do-or-die encounter at the PCA IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali on Friday.&nbsp;

Rajasthan leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal took a memorable hat-trick in a five overs a side contest that was eventually called off due to intermittent rain, pushing Bangalore out of the IPL play-off race here on Tuesday.&nbsp;

Needing 22 off the final 10 balls, Royals were favourites to pocket two points but showers lashed Chinnaswamy again and both teams had to share a point each.

The no result keeps Rajasthan&nbsp;mathematically alive in the tournament as they have 11 points from 13 games with one match to go. The visitors were 41 for one in 3.2 overs when the rain returned to the Chinnaswamy with Sanju Samson (28 off 13) being their top-scorer.

Bangalore got a point from the called off game, taking them to nine points from 13 games, ending all their hopes of progressing in the tournament.&nbsp;

Rajasthan limited RCB to 62 for seven in five overs following Gopal's hat-trick.

Rajasthan had won the toss and opted to field but rain arrived and delayed the start of the game by three hours and thirty minutes.&nbsp;

The game finally began after a long delay, courtesy a commendable effort from the ground staff which readied the ground following multiple spells of heavy rain.&nbsp;

Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli (25 off 7) was on fire from ball one, depositing pacer Varun Aaron for a straight six. The loyal fans of the hosts, who stayed back for hours in the hope of a game, managed to get their money's worth with Kohli smashing Aaron for another six before AB de Villiers (10 off 4) got into the act as the first over went for 23 runs.&nbsp;

However, Gopal brought Rajasthan right back into the game in the following over by removing Kohli and de Villiers off successive balls before sending back Marcus Stoinis for a memorable hat-trick.&nbsp;

With the following batsmen going for the big hits from the word go, Bangalore did manage to cross the 50-run mark.&nbsp;

Rajasthan pacer Oshane Thomas too made instant impact by taking two wickets in one over.&nbsp;

IPL 2019: Chennai thrash Delhi by huge 80 runs

David Warner signed off his IPL 2019 campaign in style, notching up his eight fifty of the season to help Hyderabad take a step closer towards qualifying for the play-offs with a comfortable 45-run win over Punjab here Monday. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Playing his last match of the season before heading home for World Cup preparations, Warner struck a belligerent 81 off 56 balls with seven fours and two sixes to complete his IPL 2019 campaign with 692 runs, the highest so far in the tournament.

Chasing the imposing total, K L Rahul (79 off 56, 4x4s, 5x6s) made a valiant effort with the bat but lacked support from the other end as Punjab were restricted to 167 for eight.

By virtue of this win, Hyderabad have consolidated their fourth position in the table with 12 points from 12 games, while Punjab are at 10 points from as many matches.

Both the teams have two more matches to go with Punjab still in the hunt.&nbsp;

Punjab needed a brisk start but they didn't get one, losing explosive Chris Gayle early.

Gayle departed in the first ball of the third over, brilliantly caught by Manish Pandey off Khaleel Ahmed (3/40) with Punjab scoreboard reading 11.

Thereafter, Rahul and Mayank Agarwal (27 off 18) added 60 off 39 balls to take Punjab forward.

But just when the partnership was looking threatening, Agarwal was holed by Vijay Shankar off Rashid Khan (3/21) in the ninth over.

New man in Nicholas Pooran (21 off 10) played a short breezy knock before Bhuvneshwar Kumar took a beautiful catch at long-leg boundary off Ahmed to sent packing the batsman.

Rashid then came to the party and picked up two wickets -- David Miller (11 off 11) and skipper Ravichandran Ashwin -- in consecutive balls in the 13th over to stand in chance of registering a hat-trick which didn't materialise.

From there on, the asking was tall for Rahul and debutant Prabhsimran Singh (16) and the former finally perished in the 19th over after a beautiful knock to shut the doors for Punjab. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Earlier, Warner and Wriddhiman Saha (28 off 13) got Hyderabad off to a brisk start after being sent into bat. The duo took the Punjab bowlers to the cleaners to pile up 77 runs of the first six overs of powerplay.

Warner made his intentions clear from the onset, hitting young Arshdeep Singh for two boundaries in the opening over and then followed it up with a six over long-off in Mujeeb Ur Rahman's next over.

Mujeeb was in for some treatment as Warner hit two more boundaries in the spinner's next over and then Saha also found the fence to bring up Hyderabad' fifty in the fourth over.

Saha then went after Mohammed Shami (2/36) and hit the pacer for a boundary and six off consecutive balls.

Saha's innings came to an end when he under-edged a Murugan Ashwin delivery to debutant Prabhsimran Singh behind the stumps. Saha shared 78 runs off 6.2 overs with Warner for the opening stand.

Warner continued in the same vein and notched up his eight fifty of the season with a boundary off Shami in the 12th over.

Then came in in-form Manish Pandey (36 off 25) and he too played a quick knock in Warner's company.

Pandey, who struck three fours and a six, added 82 off 55 balls along with Warner before Kings XI skipper Ravichandran Ashwin (2/20) struck twin blows in the 16th over to remove both the set batsmen.

First Ashwin accounted for Pandey and then two balls later dismissed Warner, caught by Mujeeb at point of what was a tired-looking shot.
Then skipper Kane Williamson (14 off 7) and Mohammad Nabi (20 off 10) also played short cameos towards the end.

IPL 2019: Rohit Sharma fined 15 per cent match fees for code of conduct breach

Legendary Sachin Tendulkar has categorically refuted all<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bcci-ombudsman-issues-notice-to-sachin-tendulkar-for-conflict-of-interest-213378"> allegations of Conflict of Interest levelled against him</a> as he claimed to have neither "received any compensation" nor of holding any decision making a role in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/ipl-2019">Indian Premier League</a> franchise Mumbai team.&nbsp;

Tendulkar on Sunday filed a 14-point written response to a notice sent by Ombudsman cum Ethics Officer Justice (Retd) DK Jain. It was with regards to a Conflict of Interest complaint filed by the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association (MPCA) member Sanjeev Gupta.

As per the complainant, Tendulkar and Laxman are allegedly performing dual roles of a "support staff" of their respective IPL franchises Mumbai and Hyderabad and members of the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC).

"At the outset, the Noticee (Tendulkar) denies the contents of the Complaint in totality (except the statements specifically admitted herein). No part of the Complaint should be deemed to be admitted by the Noticee for lack of specific denials," Tendulkar wrote in his response which is in possession of PTI.&nbsp;

Since Gupta's complaints harped specifically on Tendulkar's role in the Mumbai team, the iconic cricketer in his response has made full disclosure of his role in the franchise.&nbsp;

"The Noticee (Tendulkar) has received no pecuniary benefit/ compensation from the Mumbai Indians IPL Franchise in his capacity as the Mumbai Indians 'ICON' since his retirement and is certainly not employed with the Franchise in any capacity.&nbsp;

"He does not occupy any position, nor has he taken any decision (including selection of team players) which could qualify as being in governance or management of the Franchise. Accordingly, there is no conflict of interest, either under the BCCI Rules or otherwise," world's leading run-getter further explained.

As far as his role in the Cricket Advisory Committee is concerned, Tendulkar mentioned that he was appointed as a member of the BCCI committee in 2015, which was years after his involvement with the Mumbai.

"The Noticee was appointed to the panel of the Cricket Advisory Committee ("CAC") in the year 2015. The Hon'ble Ethics Officer will appreciate that the Noticee was named as the 'ICON' for Mumbai Indians much prior to his empanelment with the CAC ? which fact has always been in the public domain.&nbsp;

"Accordingly, the BCCI aware of the Noticee's association with the Mumbai Indians Franchise at the time of his appointment to the CAC."

Tendulkar, in his disclosure, further makes it clear that the role of an icon -- the one he is performing right now in the IPL franchise team -- in no way is a position either in the management or the governance of the franchise.&nbsp;

"The Complaint wrongly assumes that the Noticee's association with the Mumbai Indians IPL Franchise (Franchise) is in the capacity of "governance", "management" or "employment"? thereby attracting a conflict under Rule 38 (4).&nbsp;

"His role is limited to providing guidance to the Franchise team by sharing his insights, learnings and working closely with the younger members in the team to help them realise their true potential."

On his reply to Gupta's question of him sitting in the team's 'dugout' -- place specified for players and support staff only, he termed the allegation as "absurd".&nbsp;

"A mentor cannot be qualified as "management" of the Franchise. If the Complainant's absurd logic were to be applied, a physiotherapist, trainer or a masseur would also be qualified as "management" of the Franchise," Tendulkar responded, making it clear that he is answerable to none of the support staff.&nbsp;

"It is also pertinent to note that the Mumbai Indians team has a head coach, who works side by side with coaches for specific disciplines such as bowling, batting etc. In ultimate coordination with the Director of Cricket Operations? none of whom the Noticee is answerable to or vice versa since his role is limited to that of providing guidance and motivation to the team."

Tendulkar also made it clear that in case Ombudsman wants to "continue proceedings", he would "request for a personal hearing along with his legal representatives."&nbsp;

Receive no monetary benefit from Mumbai team: Sachin Tendulkar's letter to Ombudsman

Mahendra Singh Dhoni Friday didn't turn up for Chennai due to fever and Mumbai skipper Rohit Sharma said the veteran stumper's absence came as a "massive boost" for his side en route to their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ipl-2019-rohit-sharma-led-mumbai-beat-chennai-by-46-runs-213798">46-run win in an IPL match</a> on Friday.&nbsp;

Sans Dhoni, Chennai failed to chase down a 156-run target set by Mumbai, bundling out for 109, their lowest total at home.&nbsp;

"It was a massive boost that MSD (Dhoni) wasn't around. Because his presence does a lot for their team. When you don't have Dhoni when they're chasing the score, then it becomes difficult for them," Rohit said at the post-match presentation ceremony. &nbsp;

"I'm sure his presence was missed by CSK. But he was sick, it's not in his control either," added the right-handed batsman, who struck 67, his first fifty of the season. &nbsp;

Rohit said it was a blessing in disguise for him to lose the toss as they too would wanted to chase on what eventually turned out to be another slow Chepauk surface. "I thought it was better to lose the toss since we wanted to chase as well. But we knew whether we bat first or bowl first, we'll still have to play good cricket. We spoke about that at the start of the game, but it was a great effort by the boys since it's not easy to come here and play," he said. &nbsp;

Rohit too was mighty relived to have scored his first half-century of the season Friday.&nbsp;

"It was a satisfying innings. I was getting 30s and 40s but not getting half-centuries. At no point was I worried about my form because I was hitting the ball well. I knew the day will come, and I guess today was the day," he said.&nbsp;

Chennai stand-in skipper Suresh Raina blamed the team's batting department for the loss. &nbsp;

"We didn't bat well. We kept losing wickets every 2-3 overs, so our batsmen need to take more responsibility. Our bowling has always been good this season. We thought 155 was chaseable. But we lost too many wickets in the powerplay and middle overs," he said. &nbsp;

"We didn't rotate the strike well either. It is important to go out there and see a few balls out, and then decide which bowler you want to go after. We need to sit as a batting unit and see where we're doing wrong. We have power hitters, we have experienced batsmen, we just need to relax as a batting unit."&nbsp;

Call of duty: Overseas players leave IPL midway for World Cup

Indian Premier League (IPL) side Mumbai have signed South African pace bowler Beuran Hendricks as an injury replacement for West Indian Alzarri Joseph for the remainder of the season, the IPL franchise said on Tuesday.

Joseph, who was a replacement for injured New Zealand pacer Adam Milne, had a stellar IPL debut this month when he recorded figures of six wickets for 12 runs against Hyderabad, the best bowling figures in the competition's history.

However, he failed to build on that performance and did not pick up a single wicket in his next two matches, leaking runs at a rate around 10 per over.

Joseph, 22, dislocated his right arm while fielding in the five-wicket loss to Rajasthan over the weekend.

Hendricks, who previously played for IPL side Punjab in 2014 and 2015, has played 10 Twenty20 internationals for South Africa, picking up 16 wickets.

Mumbai, who are third in the standings, next play Chennai away on Friday.

"Hopefully we can carry it forward from here," he added.&nbsp;

Earlier, batting first, Mumbai put up a decent 161 for 5 against thanks to Quinton de Kock's splendid knock. &nbsp;&nbsp;

De Kock smashed 65 off 47 balls with six fours and two sixes, adding 97 runs off 68 balls for the second wicket with Suryakumar Yadav (34 off 33 balls) that helped MI total gain a semblance of respectability.&nbsp;

Reinstated as skipper in place of Ajinkya Rahane, Steve Smith introduced leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal (2/21 in 4 overs) in the third over. &nbsp;

He deceived rival skipper Rohit Sharma( 5), who stepped out only to offer a return catch after failing to read a googly. &nbsp;

Gopal could have got rid of De Kock off the last ball of the over but Jofra Archer dropped a difficult chance at long on.&nbsp;

Making most out of this reprieve De Kock helped his team reach 50-run mark in 6.5 overs.&nbsp;

He reached his own half-century in 34 balls and his partnership with Suryakumar was broken when latter was caught in deep off Stuart Binny in the 14th over.&nbsp;

A few balls later Quinton de Kock too was holed out in long-on as Hardik Pandya and Pollard joined forces with scorboard reading 112 for 3 in 15 overs.&nbsp;

Pollard(10 runs 7 balls) was dropped by Archer once again. Hardik played another of his cameos scoring 23 off 15 balls.

IPL 2019: Steve Smith-led Rajasthan beat Mumbai by 5 wickets

Australian cricketer Steve Smith has replaced&nbsp;Ajinkya Rahane as the captain of Rajasthan franchise in the Indian Premier League tournament ahead of their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-ipl-2019-match-36-rajasthan-royals-vs-mumbai-indians-at-sawai-mansingh-stadium-212022">match against Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai</a> on Saturday.&nbsp;

At the time of toss, Smith said, "Ajinkya has done a terrific job in the last one and a half year and the team management thinks there's a need for a change."

"I have done a bit of leadership in the IPL with a bit of success, hopefully, I can lead the team well," he added.&nbsp;

Smith, who&nbsp;is back in action after serving a one-year ban for his role in the ball-tampering scandal, has served the Rajasthan team as skipper earlier.&nbsp;

Rajasthan have lost six out of their eight games, need to win at least five of their remaining six matches to have any chance of making the playoffs.

Smith was also named captain before the start of the 2018 edition but in the wake of the ball-tampering incident, it was decided that Rahane would lead the team in the Australian's forced absence.

"Rajasthan Royals will be led by the Australian batsman Steven Smith for the upcoming matches of the IPL. Ajinkya Rahane did a fantastic job in leading the team to the playoffs last year, however, the franchise now thinks a fresh approach is needed to bring their 2019 campaign back on track.&nbsp;

"Steve has always been part of the leadership team within RR and Rahane will continue to be a key voice in the side, therefore the Royals see this as a small restructuring process to secure the results required to move up the table," said the team in a statement.&nbsp;

However, Smith is expected to be available until May 1 but by then, the team would have played majority of its league games.&nbsp;

Star players Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler would also be leaving next week to join England's World Cup camp.&nbsp;

Mumbai's all-rounder Krunal Pandya feels that the time his younger brother Hardik spent away from the game has helped him become a better cricketer.&nbsp;

Hardik seems to be in menacing form with the bat ahead of the World Cup, having overcome a back injury and a massive controversy following his sexist comments on a popular TV show.

"When he was away from the game due to injury and the other reasons (controversy), he worked a lot on his fitness. We started playing the game together and one thing that I can say that cricket has always been his priority.&nbsp;

"Honestly, there are very few players who have a work ethic like him. His goal is always to improve and if you do that, you become consistent," said Krunal after the Pandya brothers guided <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ipl-2019-dominant-mumbai-defeat-delhi-by-40-runs-211642">Mumbai to a 40-run win over Delhi</a> on Thursday.&nbsp;

Be it spinners or bowlers with express pace, Hardik has developed the ability to hit them out of the park.&nbsp;

"Earlier he used to smash spinners, now he is also doing the same to pacers. He worked on that area during the off time he got and he has gotten the desired results," said Krunal.&nbsp;

"What like I most about is never give up attitude. Every year, he is adding something or the other to his game. In fact, I have also a learnt a lot from him."

Hardik (32 off 15) and Krunal (37 off 26) had amassed 51 off last 18 balls to propel Mumbai to 168 for five against Delhi.

Krunal said the extra 20 runs in the death overs made all the difference on a difficult Kotla wicket.

"I guess while batting it was a very tricky wicket. When I went inside and when Hardik came in we were not aiming for 170, we thought 145 was a good total on this wicket. The way Hardik batted, it changed the momentum for us and we ended up with those extra runs," he said.

"While bowling we knew how the wicket would behave and our bowlers knew to how to bowl on it."

While bowling, Krunal, who picked up the wicket of Colin Munro, also tried to bowl with a slingshot action like Kedar Jadhav.

IPL 2019: Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai defeat Bangalore by five wickets

After registering their maiden victory, Virat Kohli-led Bangalore will be looking to keep their playoff hopes alive when they face Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium.

The last time these two teams met in the season, it was a game marred by controversy as umpire failed to spot a no ball and AB de Villiers' effort went in vain for Bangalore.

Meanwhile, Mumbai will be looking to regain momentum after going down to Rajasthan in the previous game with the race for the playoff spots getting closer by the game.&nbsp;

The home team have little worries as captain Rohit Sharma is back in form and will be leading from the front.&nbsp;

He got off to a brilliant start against Rajasthan but was dismissed for 47. He is yet to register a half-century this season.

Bangalore’s dependency on AB de Villiers and Virat Kohli is no secret. Getting them early will be key for Mumbai to succeed but both the players have an impressive record at Wankhede.&nbsp;

The toss might well play a key role with Kohli preferring to chase rather than set a target.

For Mumbai, Lasith Malinga might return for the home team, especially after Alzarri Joseph leaked 53 runs in three overs in the last game and also looked to have hurt his shoulder during fielding.&nbsp;

Jasprit Bumrah will be the bowler to watch out for and especially his deliveries to Kohli will be something everyone will keep an eye on.

Navdeep Saini and Yuzvendra Chahal have been the only bright spark in an otherwise disappointing bowling line-up.&nbsp;

Dale Steyn might join the squad today and that should help the men in red.

Mumbai, having won their last three matches, are third on the table with 8 points and Rajasthan, seventh on the table, are still looking for only their second win in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/kagiso-rabada-to-wion-delhi-havent-used-me-as-an-upfront-bowler-209954">12th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).&nbsp;</a>

On the other hand, Bangalore have lost six matches on trot and are currently placed at the bottom of the table. But Punjab, have shown some great fight this season and are placed at fourth position with four wins and three reverses so far.&nbsp;

Mumbai stars Kieron Pollard and Alzarri Joseph, who have come up with two match-winning performances in the home team's last two matches, will be the players in focus.&nbsp;

Skipper Rohit Sharma, who did not play the last nail-biting encounter against Punjab, is expected to return for this fixture. &nbsp;In Rohit's absence, stand-in skipper Kieron Pollard ensured Mumbai continue their good run as his whirlwind 83-run knock in just 31 balls helped the side script a three-wicket win.

The winning runs were hit by 22-year-old Alzarri Joseph, who has been the new sensation in this year's cash-rich league after he clinched six wickets for just 12 runs against Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, for Rajasthan, it will Jofra Archer, who had given the side a chance to defend 151 against Chennai, with a superb spell of fast bowling. In his four overs, Archer bowled one maiden, took one wicket and gave just 19 runs to register an economy rate of 4.75.

Talking about the second game between Bangalore and Punjab then the Virat Kohli-led side slumped to their sixth straight loss after going down against Delhi last Sunday. The side has been inconsistent with both their bowling and batting faltering in many occasions.

Barring Kohli's 33-ball 41 and Moeen Ali's 18-ball 32 cameo, Bangalore's ordinary batting display took the side to a modest 149/8,&nbsp;

Meanwhile, for Punjab, the side is largely dependent on their explosive openers K L Rahul and Chris Gayle, While Rahul registered his maiden century in the last game, Gayle smashed 63- in just 36 balls to give Kings a perfect start.

For Mumbai, skipper Rohit Sharma's unavailability might be a problem as the openers, Quinton De Kock, Siddhesh Lad failed to perform with the bat. Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have also been dull this season. though Yadav scored in one game, it is not enough.&nbsp;

In bowling, Alzarri Joseph and Hardik Pandya's availability makes the department strong enough to defend any total. Jasprit Bumrah and Jason Behrendorff are the extended strengths of the team. The two can surprise the opponent at any moment.

Talking about Rajasthan, then the side majorly relies on Jos Buttler. Ajinkya Rahane and Sanju Samson are not performing to give their sides a win. Even Steve Smith and Ben Stokes aren't putting up a performance they are known for.&nbsp;

The bowling department of the team is stronger with Jofra Archer and Shreyas Gopal's presence. &nbsp;Ben Stokes, who dismissed Dhoni at a crucial stage, is an add on for the team.

Talking about the second game, the Bangalore need to settle their batting woes as De Villiers and Kohli are the only two players who are expected to perform.&nbsp; The team can also relay a bit on Parthiv Patel.

In bowling also, the team lacks strategy with Mohammad Siraj has been the costliest this season.&nbsp;Yuzvendra Chahal is the backbone of the side and is well supported by Navdeep Saini.

Talking about Punjab then apart from Gayle and Rahul, the side has David Miller and Karun Nair.&nbsp;The bowling department is also solid with the presence of Mohammed Shami, who took three wickets, and R Ashwin, who is in a terrific form.&nbsp;

So overall, both the games are a must watch encounter promising surprises and excellent displaying of cricketing skills.

IPL 2019: Jos Buttler hits 28 runs in one over of Alzarri Joseph, Twitterati come up with hilarious memes

Jos Buttler laid the platform with a rampaging 89 while Shreyas Gopal held his nerve at the death to power Rajasthan to a four-wicket victory over Mumbai in an Indian Premier League encounter on Saturday.

This was Rajasthan's second victory of the season in seven games after losing the last ball thriller to Chennai less than 48 hours back.

Put into bat, Mumbai rode on an aggressive 81 by South Africa's Quinton De Kock to post an imposing 187/5, but Buttler's 43-ball knock studded with eight fours and seven sixes set the tone before Royals survived a scare to finish the game in 19.3 overs.

The match will be forever remembered by young West Indies pacer Alzarri Joseph (0/53 in 3 overs), who was hammered for eight fours and three sixes and then was injured trying to save a boundary.

The 13th over changed the game's complexion as Buttler smashed two sixes and four fours off Joseph to bring down the equation to a manageable run-a-ball.&nbsp;

Buttler first conjured a 60-run opening stand with skipper Ajinkya Rahane (37 off 21 balls, 6x 4; 1x6) to lay the foundation and then added 87 runs for the second wicket with Sanju Samson (31 off 26 balls; 2x4, 1x6).

Buttler initially played second fiddle to Rahane but then upped his ante once skipper was gone. The Englishman in the eighth over hit Rahul Chahar for a six, and then in next over, smashed two sixes off Krunal Pandya as he raced to 50 off 29 balls.

When Buttler departed in the 14th over, Rajasthan needed 41 runs. But then came the twist in the tale when Mumbai did make a comeback of sorts sending four batsmen -- Sanju Samson, Rahul Tripathi (1), Steve Smith (12 ) and Liam Livingstone (1) -- back to the pavilion as Rajasthan slumped to 174.6 from 147/2.

However, Shreyas Gopal (13 not out) and K Gowtham (0 not out) held their nerves to take the side home in a tense situation. Gopal hit the winning boundary off Hardik Pandya as celebrations erupted in the Rajasthan camp.

Joseph was the costliest bowler having conceded 53 runs in three overs.&nbsp;
Earlier, Quinton de Kock hit a belligerent 81 as he powered Mumbai to an imposing 187 for 5 against Rajasthan Royals in their Indian Premier League game here Saturday.&nbsp;

South African De Kock was the wrecker-in-chief as he hammered six fours and four sixes in his 52-ball knock and got able support from skipper Rohit Sharma (47 off 32 balls), who made a comeback after missing out the last Mumbai game due to a leg injury.

A late cameo from Hardik Pandya (28 off 11 balls), in which he smashed three sixes and one four ensured Mumbai neared the 190-run mark.

Earlier, Rohit and De Kock took the opposition attack to the cleaners as the two added 96 for the first wicket. They started the onslaught in the third over amassing 18 runs with the South African hitting a six and four off Krishnappa Gowtham.

Then Rohit ripped apart pacer Dhawal Kulkarni, striking three fours, including a splendid cover drive, as Mumbai gathered 14 runs from it.

De Kock kept playing shots at will even as Mumbai reached 57/0 after Powerplay period. Then De Kock dispatched spinner Liam Livingstone for two sixes over deep mid-wicket as runs came thick and fast. He raced to his fifty in 34 balls.

Rohit, who struck six fours and a lone six, threw his wicket away giving a sitter to Jos Buttler off Jofra Archer.&nbsp;

And then Rajasthan made a good comeback removing Surya Kumar Yadav (16) and Kieron Pollard (6) to reduce the hosts to 136/3.

Rajasthan bowlers made a splendid comeback as they removed De Kock and Ishan Kishan before the Hardik show.

Meanwhile, it was Rohit's 100th match as captain for Mumbai (including the now-defunct Champions League T20 games) and it was Mumbai's overall 200th match.
