However, now the director has risen the curtain from over the clouds and made an astonishing submission over the budget of his latest movie sequel. Though the director refrained from revealing any numbers to the public but his response in queries has made clear that the movie production cost is TOO MUCH. While speaking with GQ magazine about sequel's budget, the director said “Very f***** [expensive].”</p>

<p>Moreover, the director Cameron in a conversation told Disney and 20th Century Studios executives that his sequel budget was so high that it represented “the worst business case in movie history.” Over the budget he said that the movie has to be the third or fourth highest-grossing film in history to earn any profits. <p>A new initiative to promote the inclusion of Muslims in filmmaking has been created by an advocacy group with the support of the Walt Disney Co. — following a report issued this year that found that Muslims are rarely depicted in popular films and that many Muslim characters are linked to violence.</p>

<p>The project, the Pillars Muslim Artist Database, was announced Tuesday by the Pillars Fund, an advocacy group in Chicago. It produced the earlier report on depiction along with the University of Southern California Annenberg Inclusion Initiative and others.</p>

<p>That way, “Muslims around the country would be able to opt in and talk about their talents, talk about their expertise,” Shaikh said. “It was really meant to be a resource for studios, for the film industry.”</p>

<p>The report on depiction, “Missing &amp;&nbsp;Maligned,” was issued in June and analysed 200 top-grossing movies released between 2017 and 2019 across the United States, Britain, Australia and New Zealand.</p>

<p>Pillars, along with the Inclusion Initiative and British actor Riz Ahmed and his production company, Left Handed Films, also released a companion report titled “The Blueprint for Muslim Inclusion” that was intended to “fundamentally change the way Muslims are portrayed on screen.”</p>

<p>Before the reports were issued, Shaikh said, Pillars had begun conversations with Disney, which supported the creation of the database with a $20,000 grant.</p>

<p>That guide was created “to help move beyond the outdated, inaccurate and often offensive depictions of Native peoples in pop culture,” the group said in a statement. It includes sections on “Combating Negative Stereotypes,” “Avoiding Cultural Appropriation” and “Supporting Native Storytellers.”</p>

<p>The support of the Pillars and IllumiNative projects is the most recent example of how Disney has promoted diversity amid complaints that Hollywood offers too few opportunities to women, people of color and the disabled.</p>

<p>Some of Disney’s best-known offerings from decades ago, including “Song of the South” and “Dumbo,” have been criticized for including racist imagery and what have been seen as thinly veiled racist caricatures.</p>

<p>“Aladdin,” an Oscar-winning animated movie that Disney released in 1992, featured a mainly white voice cast and an opening song with lyrics about a faraway place: “Where they cut off your ear/If they don’t like your face/It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home.” (Disney said in 1993, after objections by members of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, that the ear-cutting reference would be removed but the word “barbaric” remained.)</p>

<p>Over the past several years, however, as the company’s executive chairman, Robert Iger, has emphasized diverse casting and storytelling, some of the studio’s projects have been widely seen as pioneering.</p>

<p>“Black Panther,” the Disney-Marvel superhero blockbuster released in 2018, had an almost entirely Black cast as well as a Black director. A collection of movies and streaming service shows announced in 2019 by Marvel also emphasized diversity on both sides of the camera.</p>

My theory on selective representation of <em>desi</em> distinction in cinema stems from these ideas: it is an offshoot of prejudices against immigrants, a brainchild of the propagators of ‘our land, our rent, our jobs’ dogma. “Oh, yes, I do know him. That&nbsp;dude… ‘Sound Of Metal’, right?” was someone’s social media reaction to a post on Riz Ahmed. It is appalling that&nbsp;Ahmed, a longtime British-Pakistani actor-rapper, a Primetime Emmy Award winner, and this, in 2021—Oscars nomination for ‘Best Actor In A Leading Role’— is his only claim to fame? A line from Ahmed’s own song—‘<em>Immigrants (We Get The Job Done)'</em> from ‘The Hamilton Mixtape’—lingers on my mind as I try to put a fitting conclusion to his segment:</p>

But is it worth the agent fees and expensive tickets and all that jazz for being, let’s say for example, a taxi driver in some future installment of ‘Deadpool’ where South-East Asians are a Karan Soni, and Ryan Reynolds, still the Deadpool?</p>

There’s a joke among my peers about Dev Patel every time an Indian or Pakistani role&nbsp;goes to some actor that is not Mr. Patel himself—which, between us, is rarely the case. “<em>Abbe</em>, Dev Patel busy <em>hoga</em>… <em>Abbe</em>, Dev Patel <em>zyada </em>charge<em> kar rahaan hoga</em>… (Man, Dev Patel must be busy…. Dev Patel must be charging more). Actors from this side of the globe have&nbsp;been synonymous to small, insignificant, nameless characters in Hollywood for so long that even Indians struggle to comprehend how—on Earth—did a new, promising actor even make it to Hollywood, or just Netflix? Isn’t that just brutally sad?</p>

Probably the least known controversy surrounding Steven Spielberg—and we get why; the man, the mystery, the whole shebang—is that he lifted the basic idea of ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial’ from Indian masterpiece-deliverer, the late Satyajit Ray’s unreleased&nbsp;film ‘The Alien’. Like Chan, Ray did get an honorary Oscar in 1992 for his outstanding contribution to cinema—but he was given the award in haste, while&nbsp;on his death bed, and not half as ‘young’ as Chan. Even in death, Ray’s thunder was stolen by a white man—it is believed that Spielberg, along with his other high-brow industry friends, pushed for Ray’s honorary award. For obvious reasons, you get it.&nbsp;</p>

Although some of us are puffed with pride for making Asian artists—and rightly so—a part of the global fabric that forms the very essence of cinema, a question that needs to be pondered upon: If #OscarsSoWhite triggered more nominations, and subsequent wins, for the black community, then has the unfortunate #stopasianhate played a catalyst in putting Asians on a pedestal?</p>

True, between haters ‘busting <em>bindis</em>’ (South-East Asian reference) and #IAMNOTAVIRUS &nbsp;hashtags, Asians have broken many artistic barriers. But, has recognition become the new form of appeasement? Hope not. No, after all these years, this better not be a fad. &nbsp;</p>

In a parallel universe, a little film called ‘Minari’ was making big noise—142 nominations across award shows, big and small—and people couldn’t stop gushing over Alan Kim’s ‘I'm not pretty, I'm good looking’ shenanigan or the fact that he sobbed uncontrollably after having won the Best Young Actor at Critic’s Choice Awards. The boy was all of eight and the last time white folks mollycoddled a (white) kid on the internet was when Oscar-winning ‘Room’ presented a raw, fine actor, Jacob Tremblay. But this is a Japanese-American boy with epicanthic folds. So, what happened? Turns out, a lot! ‘Minari’ was also the doorway to a ‘sweet, sweet’ revelation in grandma Youn Yuh-jung. The actress’s late-blooming appeal of the 'Wild West' is evident when the mere sight of Glenn Close leaves her trembling with joy, in the middle of a red-carpet interview, “Oh! It’s Glenn Close!” she screams with excitement. At 73, Hollywood must really look like a spaceship showing up, unannounced, and Glenn Close, a goddess of an alien. Childlike glee is Jackie Chan’s forte, and the famous alter ego that gets him instant recognition. Somehow ‘the funny man’ image stuck, not his body of work. De Niro is set to play Maniscalco`s father Salvo in the film, reuniting the pair after first appearing together in ace film director Martin Scorsese`s mob drama `The Irishman`.</p>
