When a team of psychologists set out to identify a group which could help carve out a blueprint on how to deal with a pandemic without ringing alarm bells, their conclusions surprised them. Long-term fans of horror films and shows coped most easily with the harrowing effects of COVID-19 pandemic.

The pandemic has changed our cultural and social lives, making it difficult for one to adjust to reconfiguring our lifestyle to centre around “sanitisation” and “prevention”.

The New Scientist report, based on a study undertaken by psychologists, claims that the “morbidly curious” aka horror fans were psychologically less affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

In essence, he is suggesting that horror better equips people to be in control of their emotions and to exercise control over them.

The psychologist, Scrivner further extrapolated how horror films allow one to experience fear, to consequentially overcome it. This may creep into real life experiences of those familiar with the genre, to mould them into being more optimistic whenever stressful situations arise.

Of course, there are many other factors that the study ignored but eventually intends to imbibe after it is peer reviewed and has more scientific value.

A day before, Pakistan had announced that it will be downgrading diplomatic ties with India. In a follow-up move, the Imran Khan government also expelled Indian envoy to Pakistan Ajay Bisaria and said that the new Pakistan High Commissioner to India Moin-ul-Haq will not&nbsp;be sent to Delhi.

The Ministry of External Affairs in India&nbsp;responded to this saying that Pakistan's intention was to present an "<a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/pakistan-trying-to-present-alarming-picture-by-downgrading-diplomatic-ties-india-241467">alarming picture to the world of bilateral ties</a>".

Pakistan's move came in the wake of the Indian&nbsp;government's decision to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/jammu-and-kashmir-reorganisation-bill-passed-in-rajya-sabha-with-125-members-in-favour-240893">scrap Article 370</a> which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.

I never understood what made these personalities so magnetic or why their films were so repeatable, I just knew that their aura created a ripple across crowds. I was in it for Shah Rukh’s dimples and Kareena Kapoor’s sassy dialogues that retrospectively seem to have this deep emptiness at their core.&nbsp;

But the race to win a superstar’s fan club presidency isn’t exactly the battle the Indian film industry is currently fighting. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Despite the stampedes and impressive box office collections that Bollywood superstars have drawn over the ages, the Indian entertainment industry is currently experiencing a media tech renaissance; one that demands nuance over style from its artists, and rightly so, for many reasons.

&nbsp;The most salient drivers of this trend are ones we’re faced with every day - an infinite bandwidth of choices as a result of digital streaming and collective frustration toward the status quo. India has become home to the second highest population of internet users in the world after China with close to 462 million users, out of which over a third reside in rural towns.

The average Indian spends close to eight hours and twenty-eight minutes a week on their phone according to Limelight Networks - much more than what they spend in front of their television. That number was a 58 per cent increase from 2016 and is only expected to grow in the coming years given the prediction of smartphones alone becoming a 4.6 billion dollar global industry by 2019.&nbsp;

The soaring success and positioning of affordable smartphone companies have challenged the television’s historically superior position as the go-to entertainment platform.&nbsp;

In addition to winning the numbers game, the behavioural effects of social media in the last five years have exposed audiences to an unprecedented diversity of entertainment, thus raising their expectations from artists to unforgiving levels. The rise of digital streaming across India has finally filled a void and created an insatiable appetite for content that both inspires and entertains.

Metaphorically it has put blinkers on Indian viewers, keeping their gaze away from cinema halls and glued onto their micro screens. Evidently, this exposure to refreshingly bold content has catalysed a steady decline in the footfall of Indian cinemas. There is a reason why the marketing budgets of Bollywood’s biggest productions are digging deeper into their pockets as their promotion stunts get more and more ostentatious with every passing year. From helicopter rides to college campus visits to semi-cringe worthy photo ops at charities to spread the word about a film, there isn't much marketing teams are not doing at this point to get Indians off their small screens and onto bigger ones.&nbsp;

Thematically, the topics being dealt with in Indian digital streaming productions dissolve the viewer’s lens of fixed moral and ideological boundaries. Gritty crime thrillers, Horror without the forced erotica, and tales of women’s sexual desires have stretched the possibilities for creative exploration; without the fatal legal and social backlash.

Through powerful and risky storytelling, viewers hang suspended between the blackness of evil and whiteness of absolute purity; ruminating somewhere in the vast spaces of grey that enable us to enjoy the freedom of filmmaking. This welcomed change from archaic ‘saas-bahu’ soap operas has lured the biggest names in show business to join the movement; artists who have historically been inseparable from the large seventy-mm screens across movie theatres. From Saif Ali Khan to Nawazuddin Siddiqui to supposedly now Shah Rukh Khan and Alia Bhatt - both the damsels and the demigods have descended upon the grounds of India’s latest digital obsession. Hopefully, this is the beginning of the end of cinematic trash such as ‘Golmaal 4’ or ‘Yamla Pagla Deewana Phir Se’ - finally putting an end to franchises that shouldn’t have existed in the first place.&nbsp;

While this evolution may pose a threat to you if you’re attached to the ‘first day first show’ frenzy or if you’re the owner of a single screen cinema, I believe it is the first of many steps in the right direction both creatively and commercially for the Indian audiences. Users have clearly demonstrated a willingness to pay for premium content that is available on demand, giving brands and advertisers a new vessel to enhance their presence.

Apart from the advertising revenue per user feature, streaming services are also indirectly contributing to the evolution of payment mechanisms across the nation as they bolster Indian Fin-Tech initiatives such as third-party wallet companies, telecom wallet, mobile wallet and net banking. Content being produced, licensed and distributed digitally is also decentralising the power dynamics of traditional production houses.

Fortunately, this democratises the creative process itself while instilling a culture of meritocracy in an industry where the unspeakable “n” word is now ‘nepotism.’&nbsp;

Despite the ‘winner takes all’ aspect of competing digital streaming companies and broken regulations surrounding technology, I believe this newfound way of life is perhaps the most accurate forecast into the future of India’s volatile yet deeply loved show business.

Finally, the overall victory of content over formulae has inspired our favourite stars to lay one finger on the pulse of their viewers’ increasingly demanding sensibilities. As a country that inspires the creation of both 'Race 3' and 'Raazi' in the same year, maybe it’s time for Indian storytellers to take a moment and introspect before it’s too late and my generation replaces them with the next big thing on the internet.&nbsp;

Digital streaming has left little room for mediocrity in India

Thai filmmaker Nawapol Thamrongrattanarit wasn't sure whether to believe it when he was offered unfettered, behind-the-scenes access into the normally closely guarded and secretive world of one of Asia's biggest pop idol bands. Turns out the director got closer than he could have ever dreamed.

"There were no restrictions placed on me," said Nawapol, whose quirky arthouse films chronicling youth in the digital age have made him one of Thailand's most beloved auteurs.

"I just sat the band members down in front of the camera and we started to talk. For them, it was like confessions, like therapy."

The result is the engaging documentary "BNK48: Girls Don't Cry", which frames the rise of a Thai pop sensation from complete unknowns to having hundreds of millions of fans.

Previous documentaries on Asia's pop idols have been carefully controlled by band management.&nbsp;

Not so this time, as the film presents the young hopefuls of BNK48 and their real stories, rather than those dreamed up by a press office.

One member auditions for the band simply because it was her mother's wish, another because a fortune teller told her she would one day be a star, and a third because she had grown up fearing a life of anonymity.

"Always being a no one would be frightening," says 19-year-old Korn.

Nawapol picked up on the story of the band last year and sat several of its members down for emotionally charged reflections on their careers and their arduous training regimen, which include nine-hour daily workouts.

A brutal selection process eventually trims a 30-girl squad down to 16 -- a concept popularised by Japanese girl group megastars AKB48, from whom the Thai band is franchised.

Those who make the cut are featured in the band's singles and video clips, with more opportunities to face the public.

The others -- known as "Unders" -– must wait in the shadows as the spotlight shines on their friends, a process that seems to have a devastating emotional effect on some, while revealing a steely resolve in others.&nbsp;

One of the most poignant scenes features the main band members up on stage, while a single figure dances alone off-stage, pretending she is part of the main event.

"You have to face life's reality," says the 14-year-old Jib, who by the film's end has begun speaking more like a 40-year-old.

Auditions for the band were opened to girls aged 12-22, and there is a remarkable change of appearance and attitude in them all over the 12 months.

What surprised Nawapol most once he started filming was how the usually carefully stage-managed entertainers were willing to open up to his cameras, and how quickly they had changed as human beings.

"Usually these pop idols are carefully trained and what they say to the media never really means much," said Nawapol.&nbsp;

"But they immediately started talking to us about the realities, the hardships, and all the pressure that they are under."

Social media appears the chief culprit there, as selection for the shortlist is based largely on how many followers the ladies have, and how many "likes" they can gather.

"It's a feeling like you are being chased all the time," 17-year-old Pun explains of the stress of having to constantly improve her numbers.

The film made its international premiere at the ongoing 23rd Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) after a successful run in Thai cinemas that saw it collect around $300,000 at the box office, making the film among the country's most successful ever documentaries.

Choosing BIFF for the film's foreign debut seemed immediately fitting for Nawapol, given that South Korea is one of Asian pop's spiritual homes.

Girls' Generation member and Asian pop royalty Choi Soo-young won the loudest cheers on the red carpet for BIFF's opening night, while hundreds of fans braved the looming threat of Typhoon Kong-Rey to hear her speak at a meet-and-greet the following day.&nbsp;

"It's like these women have given up their youth, but they all seem to know exactly what they are doing," Nawapol said of his subjects.&nbsp;

"I'd like now to come back to them in five years and see where life has taken them."

BIFF concludes on Saturday.

'Baahubali' is an example of a warrior film, it is an Indian film. We have explored that space in Hindi cinema with 'Jodha Akbar', 'Padmaavat' but we have not gone all out.

"The opportunity we are seeking right now is to create something new and be remembered for it. It is a great opportunity to have Karan backing it and Varun ready to go with my vision," Shashank told PTI.

The director credited SS Rajamouli's epic war drama for opening up the market and showing people the potential of Indian cinema.

"We are hoping to create something unique with 'Rannbhoomi'. We hope people like it," he added.

Shashank said in terms of story ideas, Hindi films were no way behind Hollywood movies, but they do lack when it came to special effects.

"They make a film with a budget of 500 million dollars which we are going to make it in ten million dollars. I don't think we are any lesser in terms of thoughts, ideas, stories. A 'Baahubali' shows you can do things intelligently even if it is not of the highest level of animation, it has the highest level of thought. The construction of the film is beautiful and that is where the focus should be," the director said.

"Our animation and technique will improve when more and more countries are able to watch our films and get better recovery," he added.

While there were reports that Sara Ali Khan would be part of this film, Shashank refuted the rumours.

"No one is finalised. The story is in place, work on the screenplay is on. We will get down to casting once we are completely done with writing so that we can give proper narration as opposed to a one-liner."

"To sustain in the film industry for 18 years one has to keep doing exciting work. I do films that suit my personality, my time limit. I do films that I like," Kareena told PTI.

The actor says she has been a risk-taker right from the beginning of her career despite being a commercial heroine.

"When I was 22-year-old, I did 'Chameli' and people thought I would not do it. For me, it is all about having the right balance of things - commercial and being part of different kind of movies."

Citing the example films such as 'Udta Punjab', 'Ki and Ka', 'Chameli'&nbsp;and 'Omkara', Kareena insists that she has always picked up stories that "no mainstream commercial heroine" would do.

"I just see - is this film entertaining, is the script good? Can I see myself in it and do I have a good part? When all these things fall into place I tick a film and I am on board."

For her, there is a difference between being an actor and a star and she says she has always looked at herself first as an actor and then as a star.

"I don't think anyone joins the industry thinking, 'I want to become a star'. You join it because you like acting, you like movies, you are passionate about cinema. I enjoy acting and people like me, my work and that is why I am a star."&nbsp;

She also credits a loyal fan-base for standing by her in her successes and failures.&nbsp;

"I have a loyal fan following and I feel lucky to be one of those few actors to have the support of fans. I am a fan-built star as I have had successes and failures and nothing has deterred my fans. My fans have stood by me every time."

But there is a change in her priorities after the birth of son Taimur

"It is interesting when directors write roles for you, but maybe I can't do all kind of roles. Now I look at how much time a film would take. I have a limited amount of time because I have to give a lot of time to family and my son. So I will do one film a year because now I can't do three films."&nbsp;

Her next release is 'Veere Di Wedding', a story about four female friends played by- Kareena, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, and their trials and tribulations in the society.

"It is a fun film and people are talking about women empowerment and feminism. The story is about four girls. The director came up with this concept. So what is wrong (in that) as there was a 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. This story is from the female point of view...That's it!," Kareena says.

The four protagonists in the film use cuss words but Kareena says she fails to understand why there is so much focus on that.

"Saif Ali Khan was the villain in 'Omkara' and he was bad mouthing. He won a lot of awards for the film. It is required in the film, so it is there. Nobody is doing it just for the sake of it.

"This film's language and the platform is different. The audience we are catering to is also different. We are not forcingly saying anything, the tonality is such."

Madhuri Dixit Nene believes with cinema not being the only source of entertainment in today's digital world, it has become tougher for the young generation of actors to establish themselves.&nbsp;

Madhuri, who has been one of the most popular female actors in Hindi film industry, said audiences have lots of distraction&nbsp;now.&nbsp;

"Today, there is so much distraction for people, like Netflix, etc... There is so much clutter. So, to make a place for yourself is difficult," Madhuri told PTI.

"Earlier, only movies were the mode of entertainment, but today there are a lot of other things as well, so to make your own image is all the more difficult," she added.

The 51-year-old actor was last seen on-screen in 2014 in two films- 'Dedh Ishqiya'&nbsp;and 'Gulaab Gang'. She is now back with a Marathi film titled 'Bucket List'.

Madhuri will also be seen in 'Total Dhamaal'&nbsp;alongside Anil Kapoor and Ajay Devgn and with Sanjay Dutt in Karan Johar production 'Kalank'.

"'Bucket List' is a simple story of an ordinary housewife. We have not added any extra element. We have not compromised. 'Total Dhammal' is full on comedy, there is madness in the film. 'Kalank' is a classic film. I am excited about all the film," she said.

Apart from her movie projects, Madhuri is back on the small screen as a judge on dance reality show 'Dance Deewane'.

"I don't think I would like to try any reality show other than dance. As I feel dance is close to me, it is synonymous with me. I enjoy it. I enjoy watching people dance," she says.

"This show ('Dance Deewane') is super fun as it has three generations of people dancing on stage - son, father, and grandfather can also dance. This show has no age limit, we just want to see their Deewangi and how they dance," she added.&nbsp;

On the debate over kids participating in reality shows and their alleged exploitation, Madhuri said, "There are two ways of looking at it, one is this (exploitation) and the other is that there is so much talent in them and they are getting an opportunity to present it, so you can look at it both ways."

Director Shashank Khaitan and choreographer Tushar Kalia are also serving as judges on the show that will be aired on Colors channel from June 2.

'Dangal' director Nitesh Tiwari's next set for August 30, 2019 release

His box office credentials are unmatched today but Aamir Khan says despite facing initial scepticism of the industry people, he has always been someone who believed in experimenting with film roles.

The actor, who has completed 30 years in Bollywood, walked down the memory lane to reflect on the film choices that set him apart from the crowd and made him feel like a 'lone ranger'.

"When I came into the industry, I was a minority, I was a lone ranger, who was trying to do films that I believed in, but the market did not believe in it and a host of people also did not believe in it," Aamir said in a group interview.

With hits such as "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak", "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander", "Baazi", "Earth", "Sarfarosh", "Lagaan" and "Dangal", Aamir has come to be known as one of the most bankable stars in cinema today but the actor said it has not been an easy ride to stardom.

"I was constantly swimming against the tide to do the films I believed in. Now the tide has changed. So the films that I believed in then and no one else did, have actually become more mainstream today."

Aamir, 53, believes the audiences' sensibilities are changing and if "Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander" would have released today, it had better chances at the ticket window.

Asked if he thinks the risk has paid off now, he said, "I don't know if I can say that, I was not doing it for a pay-off, I was just doing it. I was not concerned if it will pay-off or not, my focus was to do films that I believed in. When I do a film like 'Talaash', I know it is not going to be the biggest hit of the year but I want to do it."

The actor has bridged the gap between commercial and content-driven cinema but insisted he is not searching for social content in a film.

"I am not setting out for what the next social issue. I have had a mixed range of films like ''Delhi Belly'', ''Thugs of Hindostan'', ''Dangal'', etc, I am getting drawn to stories which I like."&nbsp;

The actor said he reacts to a script like an audience member.

"It has to be something that excites me, engages me, sometimes it might have a message, sometimes it might not. I don't think whether it is commercial or not. I am not able to think like that. I feel my cinema should be good and I want it to be loved by as many people."

He became a star overnight with success of his debut film as the lead actor in "Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak" in 1988 and realised he had become famous when he could no longer use the public transport. In 1973, Aamir appeared as a child actor in his uncle Nasir Hussain's film "Yaadon Ki Baaraat".

"The first time I sensed I had become popular was after ''Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak''. It was quite mad. I did a successful film, but I didn't have the money to buy a car. I used to travel by autorickshaw, bus or a train but after a point, I couldn't," he said.

"I used to ask my uncle, 'Can I borrow your car? I have to go somewhere... There are just people everywhere I go'," he added.

Aamir said he earned Rs 11,000 for his debut.

Kajol's next film, directed by Pradeep Sarkar, is slated to hit the theatres on September 14, the makers say.

The movie, tentatively titled 'Eela', also features this year's National Award for Best Actor winner Riddhi Sen, who will play Kajol's son and Neha Dhupia, who will essay the role of a drama instructor.

It's going to be a busy few weeks ahead for actress Yami Gautam as she will juggle filming two films simultaneously. Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam starer 'Batti' has been in the news and was delayed by a few weeks, but after a long time we hear hat things have now come back on track for the Shri Narayan Singh film.

The shooting of Yami’s other film, 'Uri' too will start around the same time and hence, Yami is busy figuring out the dates to ensure that none of the projects get hampered.

Yami is playing an intelligence officer in 'Uri' and is currently, prepping for her role. The film also stars Vicky Kaushal in the lead.

A spokesperson of the actress says, “Yami is committed to 'Uri' and 'Batti'. There are overlapping dates however her team is confident that they can work out the dates and ensure she can dabble in the 2 films. With film and brand commitments, Yami has currently a very busy diary and she is excited about this phase.”&nbsp;
