Scientists advising the World Health Organization (WHO) on monkeypox say the window is closing to stop its spread, with cases currently doubling every two weeks, raising concerns that it will take several months for the outbreak to peak.

WHO Europe has forecast just over 27,000 monkeypox cases in 88 countries by Aug. 2, up from 17,800 cases in nearly 70 countries at the latest count.

Making predictions beyond that is complex, scientists around the world told Reuters, but there is likely to be sustained transmission for several months and possibly longer, they said.

"We have to get in front of this," said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"It's clear the window of opportunity for doing so is closing," added Rimoin, a member of the WHO expert committee on monkeypox that met last week to determine whether the outbreak constituted a global health emergency.

A majority of committee members voted against the move and, in an unprecedented step, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared an emergency anyway.

Global health experts said action stemming from that declaration needs to be urgent, including increased vaccination, testing, isolation for those infected and contact tracing.

"Transmission is clearly unchecked," said Antoine Flahault, director of the Institute of Global Health at the University of Geneva, who chairs the WHO Europe advisory group. Jimmy Whitworth, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said he expected that cases would not plateau for at least the next four-to-six months, or until the those at highest risk of infection have been either vaccinated or infected. Sexual health organizations recently estimated that could be around 125,000 people in the UK.

Monkeypox has been a globally neglected public health problem in parts of Africa for decades, but cases began to be reported outside countries where it is endemic in May.

It generally causes mild to moderate symptoms, including fever, fatigue and the hallmark painful skin lesions, that resolve within a few weeks. Five people have died in the current outbreak, all of them in Africa.

Beyond Africa, monkeypox is spreading chiefly in men who have sex with men, putting sexual health clinics on alert for new cases.

"I remember clearly ... saying that 'I think I'm going to die,' because I can't eat, I can't drink. I can't even swallow my own spit," said Harun Tulunay, 35, a sexual health advocate who was hospitalized with monkeypox in London earlier this month but has since recovered.

'SUSTAINED TRANSMISSION'

While monkeypox is not causing large numbers of deaths globally, an unpleasant virus establishing itself in new populations is still bad news, scientists said.

Flahault's group has modeled three scenarios for the coming months, all of which include "sustained transmission," either between men who have sex with men; beyond these groups and possibly into more vulnerable populations, like children, or between humans and animals.

The latter scenario risks the establishment of a monkeypox reservoir in animals in new countries, as it has in parts of west and central Africa, said Flahault.

Ongoing transmission could also lead to mutations that make the virus more efficient at spreading in humans, scientists said.

On Tuesday, German scientists released a study ahead of peer review that found mutations in one of the 47 cases they sequenced that could help monkeypox spread in people more easily.

"The alarm bell was going off (in Africa) but we kept hitting the snooze button. Now it's time to wake up and do something about it," Rimoin said. "An infection anywhere is potentially an infection everywhere."

Monkeypox emergency could last months, with window closing to stop spread, experts say

In an effort to avoid stigmatising patients who could delay seeking care, New York City has requested the World Health Organization (WHO) to rename the monkeypox virus on Tuesday (July 26). In a letter to WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, New York City public health commissioner Ashwin Vasan stated, “We have a growing concern for the potentially devastating and stigmatizing effects that the messaging around the 'monkeypox' virus can have on... already vulnerable communities.” Vasan further stated in his letter that the WHO had suggested changing the name of the virus, connected to smallpox, during a press conference last month, AFP reported.

Currently, with 1,092 infections discovered so far, New York has more cases of the illness than any other city in the US. So far, no deaths have been reported in Europe or the United States.

In the month of May 2022, the monkeypox had begun spreading its testicles, throwing us mortals into a state of paranoia while scientists began searching for answers to the what and how questions. Over two thousand cases of monkeypox have been documented worldwide since instances first emerged in portions of Europe, the United Kingdom, and Spain. The fact that monkeypox is not unheard of is surprising. Here is all the information you require regarding it.

The Big Bang Theory of Monkeypox:

In the year 1958, Copenhagen, Denmark saw an animal outbreak that led to the discovery of the Monkeypox Virus in monkeys kept for research. Since then, outbreaks have occurred but remained confined to animals.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the very first human case of monkeypox was detected in a nine-year-old boy residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the year 1970. At first, cases were reported from several rural areas, but later on, infected humans began to pop up in various states in Africa. Since then, various cases have been detected, but it remains limited to Africa.

What is monkeypox?

If you've heard of smallpox or have unfortunately experienced it, you already have a basic understanding of what monkeypox is. Monkeypox, on the other hand, is a similar form of pox that will cause you to experience more of every symptom the pox family exhibits. Surprisingly, it is less severe than smallpox. According to the WHO, monkeypox is a virus that is transferred from animals to human beings (zoonotic) with symptoms similar to those of smallpox.

Exhaustion or fatigue

A rash that can resemble pimples or blisters and can form on the face, the inside of the mouth, the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or the anus. Before the rash entirely disappears, it passes through several stages. Sometimes the rash appears first, then the accompanying symptoms. Some people merely get a rash.

Usually, the disease lasts two to four weeks. The WHO states that those who have been vaccinated for smallpox are protected against monkeypox to some extent, but if you see symptoms, do reach out to a medical expert.

How does it spread?

Monkeypox is found in regions where there are animals, typically, in Africa. Animal to human transmission occurs when humans come into contact with an infected animal. When a person has direct physical contact with an infected person who is exhibiting symptoms, human-to-human transmission occurs. This can be done intimately or by touching and hugging. Although it is unclear whether or not those who don't have any symptoms can spread the virus.

But as of yet, nothing is clear. One can catch it through infected bedding, clothes, utensils, etc. that belong to an infected person.

How fatal is monkeypox?

Monkeypox has not proved to be as fatal as the coronavirus. According to the WHO, "Around 3–6% of reported cases have led to death in endemic countries in recent times, often in children or people who may have other health conditions."

Prevention is better than cure, but what if you do catch it?

The monkeypox is not as deadly as COVID-19, but it is something to be concerned about. Hygiene and social distancing are keys to protecting oneself from any kind of virus or disease. Make sure to keep your surroundings clean and wash your hands. If you do catch the pox, you should, "take care of the rash by letting it dry if possible or covering it with a moist dressing to protect the area if needed." Avoid touching any sores in the mouth or eyes. Mouth rinses and eye drops can be used as long as cortisone-containing products are avoided. Vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) may be recommended for severe cases. "An antiviral that was developed to treat smallpox (tecovirimat, commercialised as TPOXX) was also approved for the treatment of monkeypox in January 2022".

As of June 2022, the pox has not been declared an epidemic or a pandemic, but if we, as individuals, are not careful, things can escalate quicker than we think. If we follow basic hygiene and follow social distancing norms, Any small breakout can be prevented.

At first, cases were reported from several rural areas, but later on, infected humans began to pop up in various states in Africa. Since then, various cases have been detected, but it remains limited to Africa. What is monkeypox? If you've heard of smallpox or have unfortunately experienced it, you already have a basic understanding of what monkeypox is. Monkeypox, on the other hand, is a similar form of pox that will cause you to experience more of every symptom the pox family exhibits. Surprisingly, it is less severe than smallpox. According to the WHO, monkeypox is a virus that is transferred from animals to human beings (zoonotic) with symptoms similar to those of smallpox. Symptoms Headache Fever Back and muscle aches Enlarged lymph nodes Exhaustion or fatigue Chills A rash that can resemble pimples or blisters and can form on the face, the inside of the mouth, the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or the anus. Before the rash entirely disappears, it passes through several stages. Sometimes the rash appears first, then the accompanying symptoms. Some people merely get a rash. Usually, the disease lasts two to four weeks. The WHO states that those who have been vaccinated for smallpox are protected against monkeypox to some extent, but if you see symptoms, do reach out to a medical expert. How does it spread? Monkeypox is found in regions where there are animals, typically, in Africa. Animal to human transmission occurs when humans come into contact with an infected animal. When a person has direct physical contact with an infected person who is exhibiting symptoms, human-to-human transmission occurs. This can be done intimately or by touching and hugging. Although it is unclear whether or not those who don't have any symptoms can spread the virus. But as of yet, nothing is clear. One can catch it through infected bedding, clothes, utensils, etc. that belong to an infected person. How fatal is monkeypox? Monkeypox has not proved to be as fatal as the coronavirus. According to the WHO, "Around 3–6% of reported cases have led to death in endemic countries in recent times, often in children or people who may have other health conditions." Prevention is better than cure, but what if you do catch it? The monkeypox is not as deadly as COVID-19, but it is something to be concerned about. Hygiene and social distancing are keys to protecting oneself from any kind of virus or disease. Make sure to keep your surroundings clean and wash your hands. If you do catch the pox, you should, "take care of the rash by letting it dry if possible or covering it with a moist dressing to protect the area if needed." Avoid touching any sores in the mouth or eyes. Mouth rinses and eye drops can be used as long as cortisone-containing products are avoided. Vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) may be recommended for severe cases. "An antiviral that was developed to treat smallpox (tecovirimat, commercialised as TPOXX) was also approved for the treatment of monkeypox in January 2022". As of June 2022, the pox has not been declared an epidemic or a pandemic, but if we, as individuals, are not careful, things can escalate quicker than we think. The viral illness has just recently started to spread outside of Africa, where it is endemic. But as of early May reports of a few cases in Britain indicated that the outbreak has reached Europe.&nbsp;

More than 75 nations have confirmed more than 16,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox this year. However, as per the technical lead, Lewis asserted that the actual figure was probably higher. There have been five fatalities and deaths, which all happened in Africa.&nbsp;

The symptoms include high fever and backache. The decision was made on Monday (July 25) during a review meeting presided over by Delhi Governor V K Saxena. The Delhi government requested the district and other concerned officials to follow the Centre’s guidelines on the management of the infection. These guidelines also state that required arrangements from the airport to the hospitals need to be established or reinforced.

As per the sources, the isolation unit at LNJP Hospital, which has a dedicated 20-member staff to care for such patients, will be deployed to travellers at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, exhibiting signs including all the symptoms of monkeypox. They further said that the district administration would confine the family members and do contact tracing while sending the samples of the suspected patients to the National Institute of Virology, Pune.&nbsp;

Here are five facts related to monkeypox that you need to know:

1. Symptoms:

Monkeypox typically takes 6 to 13 days to develop, although it can take anything from 5 to 21 days or symptoms to appear. The virus is self-limiting with symptoms that last between two and four weeks. Children are more likely to experience severe cases.&nbsp;

The symptoms can be first during the invasion period (0-5 days), marked by fever, severe headache, back pain, and severe asthenia (lack of energy). The second can be, that after the onset of a fever, the skin eruption often starts one to three days later. Instead of the trunk, the rash is more frequently found on the face and limbs. In nearly 95 per cent of the instances, it affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet with the face.&nbsp;

In general, the case fatality ratio of monkeypox has traditionally fluctuated from 0 to 11 per cent; higher in young children. The case fatality rate recently has been between 3 and 6 per cent, WHO reported.&nbsp;

 
2.&nbsp;Vaccination:

Several observational studies have shown that smallpox vaccination is almost 85 per cent effective in preventing monkeypox.

Smallpox vaccinations cidofovir, ST-246, and vaccina immune globulin can be used to help in treating the virus.

However, in 2019 a brand newer vaccine based on the Ankara strain of the modified attenuated vaccinia virus was authorised for the prevention of monkeypox. This is a two-dose vaccine that is still only partially available.

The WHO said the primary prevention methods for monkeypox include increasing public awareness of risk factors and teaching individuals about the step they may take to avoid exposure to the virus.&nbsp;

As per the guidelines issued by CDC for the prevention. The instructions a persons need to follow include avoiding getting in touch with anyone who has a rash that resembles monkeypox, never touching a person infected with monkeypox, sharing utensils with someone who has monkeypox, using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, or often washing your hands with soap and water.

CDC also issued preventive guidelines for people who have monkeypox: Stay alone at home or stay in a separate room or area from people and pets you live with.

The virus currently does not have any specific treatment. Typically, patients must stay in a specialised hospital to prevent infection from spreading and to manage general symptoms.&nbsp;

4.&nbsp;Monkeypox instances have begun to be reported in various nations such as Singapore, and South Korea.

The Delhi government has been asked to track the patient's contacts. Meanwhile, more than 10 close contacts of the patient have already been isolated at his West Delhi residence.&nbsp;

The 31-year-old man, who has not been named, is admitted to Maulana Azad Medical College, confirms Health Ministry. The patient was admitted to the hospital with fever and skin lesions.

Notably, this is India’s fourth monkeypox case. The previous three have been reported from southern Kerala state.

The country's very first case was reported on July 14, while the second one was reported on July 14 in Kerala's Kannur district, and the third one was reported on July 22 in Kerala's Malappuram district.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George had said on Friday, "A 35-year-old man contracted the infection and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital where he was admitted for fever after returning from UAE on July 6."

On Saturday, the World Health Organisation declared monkeypox a global public health emergency of international concern.

The UN health agency has called on nations to adopt measures that protect the health, human rights and dignity of affected communities.

It informed that more than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries and there had been five deaths so far.

Monkeypox: New study shows symptoms are making recognition of case more difficult

India has confirmed its second case of Monkeypox infection just five days after it detected its first one. The second case has also been detected from the southern Indian state of Kerala where the first case was reported on July 14.
