If we talk about US, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Wednesday that it is planning to make the monkeypox disease a nationally notifiable condition.&nbsp;

According to the WHO, monkeypox typically lasts between two and four weeks and is self-limiting. It can be especially dangerous for children, expectant mothers, and those with impaired immune systems as a result of other conditions. Incubation typically lasts six to thirteen days, however, it can last for up to twenty-one days.

This year, more than 16,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox have been reported in more than 75 countries, and according to a WHO official, the actual number is likely higher. She emphasised, however, that the outbreak of monkeypox, which was spreading quickly, could be stopped with the appropriate measures.

WHO Europe has forecast just over 27,000 monkeypox cases in 88 countries by Aug. 2, up from 17,800 cases in nearly 70 countries at the latest count.

Making predictions beyond that is complex, scientists around the world told Reuters, but there is likely to be sustained transmission for several months and possibly longer, they said.

"We have to get in front of this," said Anne Rimoin, an epidemiology professor at the University of California, Los Angeles.

"It's clear the window of opportunity for doing so is closing," added Rimoin, a member of the WHO expert committee on monkeypox that met last week to determine whether the outbreak constituted a global health emergency.

A majority of committee members voted against the move and, in an unprecedented step, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus declared an emergency anyway.

Global health experts said action stemming from that declaration needs to be urgent, including increased vaccination, testing, isolation for those infected and contact tracing.

"Transmission is clearly unchecked," said Antoine Flahault, director of the Institute of Global Health at the University of Geneva, who chairs the WHO Europe advisory group. Jimmy Whitworth, a professor at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, said he expected that cases would not plateau for at least the next four-to-six months, or until the those at highest risk of infection have been either vaccinated or infected. Sexual health organizations recently estimated that could be around 125,000 people in the UK.

Monkeypox has been a globally neglected public health problem in parts of Africa for decades, but cases began to be reported outside countries where it is endemic in May.

It generally causes mild to moderate symptoms, including fever, fatigue and the hallmark painful skin lesions, that resolve within a few weeks. Five people have died in the current outbreak, all of them in Africa.

Monkeypox emergency could last months, with window closing to stop spread, experts say

In an effort to avoid stigmatising patients who could delay seeking care, New York City has requested the World Health Organization (WHO) to rename the monkeypox virus on Tuesday (July 26). In a letter to WHO Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, New York City public health commissioner Ashwin Vasan stated, “We have a growing concern for the potentially devastating and stigmatizing effects that the messaging around the 'monkeypox' virus can have on... already vulnerable communities.” Vasan further stated in his letter that the WHO had suggested changing the name of the virus, connected to smallpox, during a press conference last month, AFP reported.

Currently, with 1,092 infections discovered so far, New York has more cases of the illness than any other city in the US. So far, no deaths have been reported in Europe or the United States.

Over two thousand cases of monkeypox have been documented worldwide since instances first emerged in portions of Europe, the United Kingdom, and Spain. The fact that monkeypox is not unheard of is surprising. Here is all the information you require regarding it.

In the year 1958, Copenhagen, Denmark saw an animal outbreak that led to the discovery of the Monkeypox Virus in monkeys kept for research. Since then, outbreaks have occurred but remained confined to animals.

The World Health Organization (WHO) states that the very first human case of monkeypox was detected in a nine-year-old boy residing in the Democratic Republic of Congo in the year 1970. At first, cases were reported from several rural areas, but later on, infected humans began to pop up in various states in Africa. Since then, various cases have been detected, but it remains limited to Africa.

What is monkeypox?

If you've heard of smallpox or have unfortunately experienced it, you already have a basic understanding of what monkeypox is. Monkeypox, on the other hand, is a similar form of pox that will cause you to experience more of every symptom the pox family exhibits. Surprisingly, it is less severe than smallpox. According to the WHO, monkeypox is a virus that is transferred from animals to human beings (zoonotic) with symptoms similar to those of smallpox.

Exhaustion or fatigue

A rash that can resemble pimples or blisters and can form on the face, the inside of the mouth, the hands, feet, chest, genitals, or the anus. Before the rash entirely disappears, it passes through several stages. Sometimes the rash appears first, then the accompanying symptoms. Some people merely get a rash.

Usually, the disease lasts two to four weeks. The WHO states that those who have been vaccinated for smallpox are protected against monkeypox to some extent, but if you see symptoms, do reach out to a medical expert.

How does it spread?

Monkeypox is found in regions where there are animals, typically, in Africa. Animal to human transmission occurs when humans come into contact with an infected animal. When a person has direct physical contact with an infected person who is exhibiting symptoms, human-to-human transmission occurs. This can be done intimately or by touching and hugging. Although it is unclear whether or not those who don't have any symptoms can spread the virus.

But as of yet, nothing is clear. One can catch it through infected bedding, clothes, utensils, etc. that belong to an infected person.

How fatal is monkeypox?

Monkeypox has not proved to be as fatal as the coronavirus. According to the WHO, "Around 3–6% of reported cases have led to death in endemic countries in recent times, often in children or people who may have other health conditions."

Prevention is better than cure, but what if you do catch it?

The monkeypox is not as deadly as COVID-19, but it is something to be concerned about. Hygiene and social distancing are keys to protecting oneself from any kind of virus or disease. Make sure to keep your surroundings clean and wash your hands. If you do catch the pox, you should, "take care of the rash by letting it dry if possible or covering it with a moist dressing to protect the area if needed." Avoid touching any sores in the mouth or eyes. Mouth rinses and eye drops can be used as long as cortisone-containing products are avoided. Vaccinia immune globulin (VIG) may be recommended for severe cases. "An antiviral that was developed to treat smallpox (tecovirimat, commercialised as TPOXX) was also approved for the treatment of monkeypox in January 2022".

As of June 2022, the pox has not been declared an epidemic or a pandemic, but if we, as individuals, are not careful, things can escalate quicker than we think. If we follow basic hygiene and follow social distancing norms, Any small breakout can be prevented.

Here are five facts related to monkeypox that you need to know:

1. Symptoms:

Monkeypox typically takes 6 to 13 days to develop, although it can take anything from 5 to 21 days or symptoms to appear. The virus is self-limiting with symptoms that last between two and four weeks. Children are more likely to experience severe cases.&nbsp;

The symptoms can be first during the invasion period (0-5 days), marked by fever, severe headache, back pain, and severe asthenia (lack of energy). The second can be, that after the onset of a fever, the skin eruption often starts one to three days later. Instead of the trunk, the rash is more frequently found on the face and limbs. In nearly 95 per cent of the instances, it affects the palms of the hands and soles of the feet with the face.&nbsp;

In general, the case fatality ratio of monkeypox has traditionally fluctuated from 0 to 11 per cent; higher in young children. The case fatality rate recently has been between 3 and 6 per cent, WHO reported.&nbsp;

 
2.&nbsp;Vaccination:

Several observational studies have shown that smallpox vaccination is almost 85 per cent effective in preventing monkeypox.

Smallpox vaccinations cidofovir, ST-246, and vaccina immune globulin can be used to help in treating the virus.

However, in 2019 a brand newer vaccine based on the Ankara strain of the modified attenuated vaccinia virus was authorised for the prevention of monkeypox. This is a two-dose vaccine that is still only partially available.

The instructions a persons need to follow include avoiding getting in touch with anyone who has a rash that resembles monkeypox, never touching a person infected with monkeypox, sharing utensils with someone who has monkeypox, using an alcohol-based hand sanitiser, or often washing your hands with soap and water.

CDC also issued preventive guidelines for people who have monkeypox: Stay alone at home or stay in a separate room or area from people and pets you live with.

The virus currently does not have any specific treatment. Typically, patients must stay in a specialised hospital to prevent infection from spreading and to manage general symptoms.&nbsp;

Notably, this is India’s fourth monkeypox case. The previous three have been reported from southern Kerala state.

The country's very first case was reported on July 14, while the second one was reported on July 14 in Kerala's Kannur district, and the third one was reported on July 22 in Kerala's Malappuram district.

Kerala Health Minister Veena George had said on Friday, "A 35-year-old man contracted the infection and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital where he was admitted for fever after returning from UAE on July 6."

On Saturday, the World Health Organisation declared monkeypox a global public health emergency of international concern.

The UN health agency has called on nations to adopt measures that protect the health, human rights and dignity of affected communities.

It informed that more than 16,000 cases have now been reported from 75 countries and there had been five deaths so far.

For all of these reasons, I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern." said Dr Tedros. WHO director-general took the call himself However, it is interesting to note that the Health Regulations Emergency Committee which had remained undivided on declaring the outbreak a 'global emergency' in a meeting last month had not differed in its stance in the Saturday meeting as well. Nine members were against and six were in favour of the declaration.
