Apart from the severe and rare brain problem, experts have also found some evidence of a group of people with monkeypox who had more common neurological symptoms including headache, muscle ache, and fatigue.&nbsp;

In-depth analysis and further investigation are needed to understand the issue. So far, the research is unclear on how severe these symptoms were and how long they lasted. Also, a further probe&nbsp;is needed to know how many people with monkeypox had psychiatric problems, such as anxiety and depression.&nbsp;

There's a lack of certainty but the experts did find some cases where people with monkeypox infection can have neuropsychiatric symptoms. Notably, future research exploring this will need to follow up with people with no neuropsychiatric conditions before becoming infected with the disease.&nbsp;

Another study published in the&nbsp;New England Journal of Medicine,&nbsp;stated that over 500 people with monkeypox from 16 countries in the current outbreak.&nbsp;

Recently, two cases of monkeypox were reported and they confirmed encephalitis in Spain. However, the report clearly mentions that further study is needed to determine to what extent monkeypox is causing more serious problems like encephalitis and seizure.&nbsp;

Twitter failed to curb monkeypox hate speech aimed at LGBTQ community, says study

Indonesia, on Saturday (August 20) announced its first case of monkeypox. A 27-year-old patient returned home to Jakarta and felt feverish. He had rashes on his body.

"The tests done&nbsp;on August 18 concluded that he was infected with monkeypox," said Indonesian health ministry spokesperson Mohammad Syahril as quoted by Xinhua news agency.

Currently, a&nbsp;medical team is tracing those who came in close contact with the patient. Indonesia is setting up more 10 polymerase chain reaction laboratories at entry points like airports and ports. The ministry said that about 10,000 monkeypox vaccines are being procured.

On July 23, the World Health Organization declared the escalating global monkeypox outbreak a public health emergency of international concern.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "I have decided that the global monkeypox outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern."

Speaking at the press conference on the report of the 2nd meeting of the International Health Regulations Emergency Committee regarding the monkeypox outbreak, Ghebreyesus said that he convened the emergency committee, a month ago, to assess whether the monkeypox outbreak represented a public health emergency of international concern. He further said that during that meeting, the committee came to the conclusion that monkeypox was not represented as a public health emergency of international concern.

Dr Ramsay added, "Around 50,000 of these have been received to date and made available to the NHS for distribution across the country."&nbsp;

"The thousands of vaccines administered by the NHS to date among those at highest risk of exposure should have a significant impact on the transmission of the virus," she added.&nbsp;

UK monkeypox outbreak shows 'early signs' of plateauing, expansion has slowed

&nbsp;The Biden administration has decided to stretch out its limited supply of monkeypox vaccine by allowing a different method of injection that uses one-fifth as much per shot, according to people familiar with the discussions.

In order for the Food and Drug Administration to authorize so-called intradermal injection, which would involve injecting one-fifth of the current dose into the skin instead of a full dose into underlying fat, the Department of Health and Human Services will need to issue a new emergency declaration allowing regulators to invoke the FDA’s emergency-use powers. That declaration is expected as early as Tuesday afternoon.

The move would help alleviate a shortage of vaccine that has turned into a growing political and public health problem for the administration.

The administration has faced a barrage of criticism that it was too slow to ship vaccine that was ready for use to the United States from Denmark, where it was manufactured, and too slow to order that bulk vaccine stocks be processed into vials after the disease first surfaced in the U.S. in mid-May.

In less than three months, more than 8,900 monkeypox cases have been reported. The virus spreads from person to person primarily through close physical contact with infectious lesions.

Even though it invested more than $1 billion in developing the two-dose vaccine known as Jynneos that works against both monkeypox and smallpox, the government has only 1.1 million shots on hand. It needs about three times as many doses to cover the 1.6 million to 1.7 million Americans who, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, are at high risk of contracting monkeypox.

The vaccine is currently delivered in two 0.5 milliliter doses 28 days apart, with immune protection reaching its “maximum” 14 days after the second dose, according to the CDC.

The shot is recommended by the CDC for people who have been exposed to monkeypox and those who might be likely to get it. Those in the latter category include people identified as a contact of someone with monkeypox, those who know a sexual partner from the past 14 days was diagnosed with the disease and those who have had “multiple” sexual partners in that time frame in an area with “known monkeypox.”

Federal health officials said last week that so far, they have distributed about 600,000 doses of the vaccine to state and local jurisdictions.

The Department of Health and Human Services last week also issued a broader public-emergency declaration that allowed the federal government to more easily allot money and other resources to fight the virus.

Research on intradermal injection of the monkeypox vaccine is essentially limited to one study. It showed that when the vaccine was injected between skin layers, it induced an immune response comparable to that from a standard injection into the fat underneath the skin. Federal officials have consulted with a variety of outside groups about switching to the intradermal injection approach, including the Infectious Diseases Society of America, according to people familiar with the talks.

Some outside experts have criticized the data backing up the method for monkeypox as too thin and narrowly focused. The government’s decision to go with it is heavily based on a 2015 study that was sponsored by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. John Beigel, an NIH associate director of clinical research who has briefed federal health officials and the World Health Organization, said that switching to the intradermal method was a better option for preserving vaccine than administering just one of the two recommended doses, as some jurisdictions now do. One shot does not prompt nearly as strong an immune response as two, he said.

“The upside is you can stretch out doses,” said John Moore, a virus expert at Weill Cornell Medicine. “The downside is if you cut it too far or take too many liberties, you reduce the efficacy. And how are you going to know that? It’s educated guesswork.”

The intradermal method can be complicated for vaccinators, who must guide a needle into a thin space. If a vaccinator goes too deep and inserts the dose into fat, the patient might not receive enough vaccine, experts say. But if the needle is not inserted far enough, some of the vaccine could leak back out.

Such shots typically induce more redness and swelling but are less painful than a standard injection, the 2015 study showed.

They have previously been used in polio vaccination campaigns, for rabies and with tuberculosis skin tests.

The NIH had planned further studies into how well such shots work with the monkeypox vaccine, but the results were not expected until the late fall or early winter. Over the weekend, top federal officials came to a consensus that the government needed to embrace the approach now.

According to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), California has so far reported 827 monkeypox cases—the second highest in the country after New York.

The total number of cases in the country stands at 5,811. The outbreak has risen exponentially since the Boston health authorities confirmed the first US case in May.

These three major US states—California, Illinois and New York—account for 47 per cent of all confirmed monkeypox infections in the country. New York has emerged as the epicentre of the outbreak with nearly 1,400 confirmed cases as of Monday, reports CNBC.

"California is working urgently across all levels of government to slow the spread of monkeypox, leveraging our robust testing, contact tracing and community partnerships strengthened during the pandemic to ensure that those most at risk are our focus for vaccines, treatment and outreach," Governor Gavin Newsom said in a statement on Monday.

"We'll continue to work with the federal government to secure more vaccines, raise awareness about reducing risk, and stand with the LGBTQ community fighting stigmatisation," he added.

Newsom said the state officials are working across all levels of government to tame the spread of the disease through testing, contract tracing and community outreach.

Last month, the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared monkeypox a global health emergency after 19,000 monkeypox cases were reported in at least 78 countries.

The outbreak is unusual because the virus is spreading widely in North America and Europe. In the past, monkeypox spread at low levels in West and Central Africa where rodents and other animals carry the virus.

According to the CDC, monkeypox is primarily transmitting through skin-to-skin contact during sex. About 98 per cent of patients who provided demographic information to clinics were identified as men who have sex with men.

According to Kerala Health Minister Veena George, the 22-year-old had travelled on July 21st from the UAE and reached Kerala's Calicut airport on July 22nd. Thereafter, he went to his residence in the Thrissur district along with his friends. After staying at home for more than four days, he is said to have fallen ill and was hospitalised on July 27th.

While being treated at the private hospital in Thrissur, his condition is said to have deteriorated rapidly, following which he was put on ventilator support, and he succumbed on July 30th. According to health authorities, the patient's family had revealed to the private hospital on July 30th that the patient was already monkey pox positive, as per a pre-travel test taken in the UAE. This has raised concerns, and a probe is underway to determine what caused the delay in sharing information in that regard.

A follow-up test of this patient that was conducted in India's National Institute of Virology(NIV) has also confirmed that he was indeed monkey pox positive. On Monday, Kerala's Health Minister Veena George confirmed that the NIV test result of the deceased person had also revealed monkeypox positive.&nbsp;
