As a result of this "ecologic fragility", pathogens that typically circulate in animals are increasingly jumping into humans, he said.&nbsp;

"Unfortunately, that ability to amplify that disease and move it on within our communities is increasing - so both disease emergence and disease amplification factors have increased."

His commentary comes as cases of monkeypox continue to rise outside Africa, where the pathogen is endemic.

But monkeypox, which spreads through close contact, is much less severe, with symptoms typically including a high fever and a blistery chickenpox-like rash that clears up after a few weeks.

The community spread of Monkeypox in England is raising some serious concerns as the country has now recorded at least 183 infections in the month of May.

The cases caused panic worldwide with people comparing it with the deadly coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak that killed millions in the past two years.&nbsp;

As per a report by Associated Press, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention noted that there have been more than 1,400 monkeypox cases and 63 deaths in four countries where the disease is endemic - Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo and Nigeria.&nbsp;

However, measures to counter the spread were not there in African countries. The bias is evident as after the recent identification of cases, Britain has vaccinated more than 1,000 people who were at risk of contracting. The authorities also bought 20,000 more doses.&nbsp;

As mentioned, EU officials are in talks to buy more smallpox vaccines from Bavarian Nordic, the maker of the only such vaccine licensed in Europe, AP reported. US government officials have released about 700 doses of the vaccine.&nbsp;

Dr Jimmy Whitworth, a professor of international public health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine said that limited vaccine supply and competing health priorities have meant that immunisation against monkeypox hasn't been widely pursued in Africa.&nbsp;

"It's a bit uncomfortable that we have a different attitude to the kinds of resources we deploy depending on where cases are. It exposes a moral failing when those interventions aren't available for the millions of people in Africa who need them," he said as quoted by AP.&nbsp;

Calling for strict action, the World Health Organization has warned that the monkeypox outbreak can be just ''the peak of the iceberg''.

WHO’s epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention chief Sylvie Briand has expressed concerns about monkeypox's growing number of cases worldwide.

“We don't know if we are just seeing the peak of the iceberg,” Briand said during a press briefing.

The UN agency has said that it is considering whether the outbreak should be assessed as a "potential public health emergency of international concern" or PHEIC.

"At the moment, we are not concerned about a global pandemic," she said.

"We really don't actually yet know whether there's asymptomatic transmission of monkeypox - the indications in the past have been that this is not a major feature - but this remains to be determined, she added.

Monkeypox is related to smallpox, which killed millions around the world every year before it was eradicated in 1980. But monkeypox is much less severe, and most people recover within three to four weeks.

It eventually means that the particular population is no longer protected against other viruses in the same family.&nbsp;

But there seems to be a new problem plaguing a number of countries as the number of monkeypox cases are going up with every passing day. The total number of cases in the United Kingdom has already gone up to 78 with seven more cases on Wednesday but scientists believe that the monkeypox virus has been circulating unsuspected in multiple nations for quite some now.

The UK has reported the highest number of cases in the world till now with around 20-25 countries getting affected in the last month alone. According to the official data, around 200 cases have been detected around the world and although it has existed in parts of Africa in the past, this is the first outbreak of the monkeypox virus outside the continent.

Professor David Heymann, who chairs a World Health Organization expert group on infectious threats to global health, believes that the virus has been present in the UK for the last two to three years, but the impact was not detected earlier.

Even as monkeypox swarms US and Europe affecting thousands of people, a new research has claimed to have found the potential cure to treat the viral infection. Scientists have said that giving antiviral medications might shorten symptoms and reduce the amount of time a patient is contagious. The antivirals are designed for smallpox. The medication, if effective as the study suggests, can be a major breakthrough for several countries who are already reeling under the surge of COVID-19 outbreak. There are currently no licensed treatments for monkeypox in humans. The only available drugs, identified in the study, are Brincidofovir and Tecovirimat.

So far, both the drugs are only approved in the USA for the treatment of smallpox.

The study was published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases after analysing seven patients who were treated for monkeypox between 2018 and 2021 in the United Kingdom, The Independent reported.

The researchers pointed out that their study is based on a small sample group and called for further investigations around the antiviral treatments.

Their findings said that monkeypox was found in throat and blood samples of the patients. Five of them spent more than three weeks in isolation – up to 39 days – as they received prolonged positive PCR test results.

“The disease course of the patients we report on were challenging and resource-intensive to manage, even in the high-income setting of the UK. Monkeypox outbreaks will continue to occur in west and central Africa, and healthcare workers around the world must remain vigilant to the possibility of monkeypox in travellers presenting with fever and rash. Our observations in this small series support further research into antivirals to treat this neglected tropical disease,” the report said.

So far, both the drugs are only approved in the USA for the treatment of smallpox. The study was published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases after analysing seven patients who were treated for monkeypox between 2018 and 2021 in the United Kingdom, The Independent reported. The researchers pointed out that their study is based on a small sample group and called for further investigations around the antiviral treatments. Their findings said that monkeypox was found in throat and blood samples of the patients. Five of them spent more than three weeks in isolation – up to 39 days – as they received prolonged positive PCR test results.
