<h2>Who won gold and bronze in the event?</h2>North Korean Ri Song Gum won the gold medal in the event with a total of 213 kg (91 kg in snatch and 122 kg in clean and jerk). The bronze medal went to Thailand's Thanyathon Sukcharoen who lifted a total weight of 198 kg (88 kg in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk).

During her event, Chanu struggled in the snatch part of the event and failed to lift 87 kg but soon found her rhythm in the clean and jerk part of the event where she confidently lifted 109 kg, 112 kg and 115 kg.

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu failed to reprise her Tokyo 2021 performance and finished fourth in the 49kg weightlifting on Wednesday (Aug 7) at the ongoing Paris Olympics 2024. She lifted a total weight of 199 kg (88 in snatch and 111 kg in clean and jerk).

Chanu had won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 games and became the first Indian weightlifter to do so. Before her, Karnam Malleshwari had won a bronze medal in Sydney 2000 games.

The request particularly highlighted the issues faced by the state where the central government has acted and employed a big security force to enable peace.

"We don't want to fight. We just want peace to return to Manipur. Right now, it is a fight between the Kuki militants and Meiteis," boxer Sarita Devi said.

"Every day Meiteis are being killed, their houses are being burnt down, and children have lost their parents. The Centre has said that it has deployed about 40,000 forces in the state, but they are nowhere to be seen.

"The forces cite the Suspension of Operations (SoO) as the reason behind not being able to take any action against the militants. It has been a month since Manipur is burning,” the memorandum added.

On the historic occasion, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi&nbsp;hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort, New Delhi on Monday morning. From Virat Kohli to Mirabai Chanu: Sporting icons wish countrymen on India's Independence Day

Despite the absence of sporting disciplines like shooting, tennis, archery and Greco-Roman wrestling, India recorded a fabulous campaign at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as the athletes returned home with an impressive 61 medals. India dominated in wrestling and weightlifting at the Games, winning a total of 12 and 10 medals in two sporting disciplines, respectively.

It was a year of some historic firsts for the Indian contingent at the Games as the country won a medal for the first time in lawn bowls. India also won their maiden Commonwealth Games medals in Steeplechase and race walk at Birmingham making it a memorable affair for the nation.

India's best-ever performance at the Commonwealth Games came in the 2010 games in New Delhi as the host nation. However, the country's impressive show in Birmingham can be a close second despite the medal tally being lesser than the 69 medals won in 2002 or 66 medals bagged in 2018.&nbsp;

In 2010, India had won a total of 49 medals in the sporting disciplines that were missing in the Birmingham Games this year. If these medals are removed from the overall tally of 101, we are left with 52 medals, including 17 golds which are way below India's tally this year.

Chanu bagged India's first gold medal at the mega event after dominating the proceedings in the 49kg final. She lifted a record 201 kg overall to set a Games record and successfully defend her title.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist had won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia and was one of the favourites to win the title once again this year. She came up with a flawless display in the final by lifting a record 88kg in the snatch round before lifting 113 kg in the clean and jerk round to finish on top of the podium.

Her 88 kg lift in the snatch was also Chanu's personal best and was 12 kg more than her nearest rival in the snatch round at the final on Saturday. The 27-year-old was in a league of her own as she completely dominated the event on her way to gold.

Reacting after her fabulous lop-sided victory, Chanu said she felt her competition was not against her opponents in the final but herself. The Indian star weightlifter also stated how Commonwealth Games has been easy for her and she wanted to match her personal best at the event which she successfully managed to pull off.

“It was not a competition against the other opponents, and I was only competing with myself and did not have to fight much. Everybody knows that the Commonwealth Games is easy for me but I wanted to give it my personal best,” Chanu told India Today after clinching gold at the CWG 2022.

Chanu had gone for a 90 kg lift in her third attempt during the snatch round on Saturday but failed to pull it off. The Indian weightlifter revealed she has been able to lift 90 kg during training but it didn't come off on Saturday. However, the newly-crowned gold medallist said she was happy with her effort at the Games this year.

“My target in this competition was to better my ‘snatch’ game, since it is a weak point of mine. So, after we came back from Tokyo, we worked a lot on it. I am very happy that I was able to touch 88kgs. I have touched 90 in practice, but it did not happen today. However, I am very happy with my performance,” said Chanu.

Mirabai is the heavy favourite to win the gold medal as her nearest rival has a personal best of 168kg (72kg snatch+96kg clean &amp; jerk) while Mirabai's&nbsp;personal best stands at 207kg (88kg+119kg). Similarly, pugilist Lovlina Boroghain will be up against N Ariane in round 1 of the 70 kilogrammes category.&nbsp;

India at Commonwealth Games 2022, Day 2 full schedule: Mirabai Chanu and Lovlina Borgohain in action

The Commonwealth Games 2022 edition is set to get underway on July 29 (Friday) in Birmingham, England. The forthcoming edition has been keenly awaited by many Indian sports fanatics, especially after seeing the Indian contingnent's performance in the last year's Tokyo Olympics.

Team India is a strong squad comprising several star athletes, such as PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led India men's hockey team and Savita Punia's women's hockey line-up, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Manika Batra, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, etc.

Neeraj Chopra, India's star javelin thrower, misses out due to a groin injury, nonetheless, there is enough firepower in the Indian contingent to impress in the upcoming event in Birmingham. Ahead of the opening ceremony, to be held&nbsp;at the Alexander Stadium, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) named Sindhu as the flagbearer, followed by Manpreet Singh.

Being handed over such a huge responsibility, Sindhu said after the announcement on Wednesday (July 27), "It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer."&nbsp;

On Wednesday (July 27), PV Sindhu added another feather to her illustrious hat as the 27-year-old superstar shuttler has been named as India's flagbearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to kick off in Birmingham on July 29.

It was touted to be a two-way battle between Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu for being the flagbearer before the shuttler was given the responsibility by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Neeraj, for the unversed, has bowed out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury which he sustained during his silver-medal win in the men's javelin throw final at the recently-concluded World Atheltics Championships.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday.

Sindhu was India's flagbearer at the last edition, in Gold Coast, where she returned with a silver medal in the women's singles. This time around, the two-time Olympic medallist will be eager to secure the elusive gold medal.
