Failure is hard to digest. This is exactly what once happened to the newly crowned weightlifting world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu.

Mirabai, who brought laurels to the country by clinching a Gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships last month, actually thought of quitting the sport after receiving flak for her failure to win a medal at the Rio Olympics.

"I was really low after the Olympics. It took me a lot of time to get over the disappointment. I even thought of giving up the sport and stop training. The comments in social media, the criticism against my coach really hurt me," said Chanu, as reported by PTI.

To overcome the failure at the Olympics, Chanu left no stone unturned and worked on her technique and even went for regular sessions to her psychologist.

"My psychologist also played a big role. I used to go to my psychologist twice in a month but after the Olympics, I started taking sessions every week and it really helped me," she added as per PTI.

In Rio 2016, Chanu had put up a disappointing performance as she could not get an overall total in women's 48 kg, after failing to lift the weight in any of her three attempts in clean and jerk section.

But now, after taking India to new heights, Chanu eyes the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games scheduled to take place next year.

'Thought to quit after Rio loss,' says Weightlifting World Champion Mirabai Chanu

India won its first weightlifting World Championships gold medal since 1995 when Mirabai Chanu defeated the Thai favourite Thunya Sukcharoen in the women's 48 kg on Wednesday.

Vietnam had a one-two finish in the men's 56 kg, and Francisco Mosquera Valencia of Colombia became the first non-Asian winner at 62 kg since 2003.

Mirabai had failed to register a total at the Rio Olympics because of nerves and while she said she was also nervous at Anaheim Convention Centre she made three clear clean and jerk lifts for a total of 194 kg to deny Sukcharoen, who failed with her last attempt, by one kilogram.

India's last World Championships winner was Karnam Malleswari, who in 2000 became the country's first female Olympic medallist in any sport.

In the 56 kg weight class Vietnam's Thach Kim, who had finished on the podium behind the North Korean Om Yun-chol in the past three World Championships, lifted 279 kg to beat compatriot Tran Le Quoc and Thailand's Witoon Mingmoon.

Mosquera Valencia, a silver medallist in 2015, made up a six-kilogram deficit in the snatch to win the 62 kg with a total of 300 kg from Japan's Yoichi Itokazu and Georgia's Shota Mishvelidze.

North Korea did not enter this year, while nine other leading nations are banned for doping offences.
