<p>It was a historic feat for Chanu as her win came two decades after Indian trailblazer Karnam Malleswari became the first Indian woman to win an Olympic medal (Bronze) while competing at the 2000 Sydney Games in the women’s 69kg weight category.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chanu lifted 84kg and 87kg successfully. She began with a 84kg lift in her first attempt in the snatch segment and went on to improve with an 87kg lift. However, she failed to lift 89kg as she was placed in the second spot. China's HOU Zhihu created an Olympic record as she lifted 94kg.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After winning the medal, she said, "Was determined to give my best, 2016 Olympics proved to be a learning curve: Mirabai Chanu.&nbsp;I tried my best to win gold medal, I wasn't able to win gold, but I really tried. When I did 2nd lift, I understood I'll bring a medal along with me.&nbsp;I'm very happy that I've won the medal. <p>Mirabai Chanu has achieved a massive milestone after setting a new World Record in the women's 49kg Clean and Jerk with a massive 119kg lift on Saturday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian weightlifter also recorded a new personal best of 205kg (86+119). Her previous personal best was 203 kgs that she achieved in the National championships in Kolkata last year.</p>

<p>With this, Chanu clinched a bronze medal at the Asian Weightlifting Championship, which is her first tournament after over a year.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The former World Champion was off to a rough start as she failed twice in Snatch before lifting 86kg in her final attempt, however, she bounced back in the Clean and Jerk as she lifted 113 kg, 117kg and 119kg to storm to the bronze. The final list (119 kgs) set the new world record shattering the previous one which was held by Chinese lifter Jiang Huihua at 118 kgs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per chief National coach Vijay Sharma, Mirabai will qualify for Olympics (Tokyo 2020) after taking part in the Asian championships as she fulfilled the requirement of taking part in six designated events in the prescribed time frame.</p>

<p>Competing in the 48kg category, Chanu, who claimed a silver at the 2014 CWG, is being considered a sure shot medal prospect for India as her personal best of 194kg stands over 10kg more than her nearest rival in the competition.</p>

<p>Chanu had become only the second Indian weightlifter after Karnam Malleswari to emerge a world champion in November 2017 when she created a new world record of 194kg - 85kg snatch and 109kg clean-and-jerk - to lift gold at the World Weightlifting Championships in Anaheim, USA.</p>

<p>None of the lifters in her competition have touched even 180kg with her likely closest rival, Amanda Braddock of Canada, having a personal best of 173kg.</p>

<p>While Chanu's medal prospects make her the top draw for the Indian contingent, also in action will be the shuttlers, boxers, the women's hockey team and the table tennis players among others.</p>

<p>The hockey team had finished fifth the last time around and will be beginning its campaign against Wales tomorrow morning. The Indians had done well in the tour of South Korea coming into the Games, winning the series in a morale-boosting effort.</p>

<p>"We have practiced hard for these Games, I hope the results will reflect that," coach Harendra Singh said.</p>

<p>On November 30, Saikhom Mirabai Chanu became the first Indian in over two decades to win a gold medal at the World weightlifting championships. Chanu lifted 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk, to total an impressive 194 kg, in the women&rsquo;s 48kg, in the process of setting a new national record. She is only second Indian weightlifter after Olympic bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari to achieve this feat. Karnam had won the top prize in the Worlds twice in 1994 and 1995.&nbsp;</p>

In the F46 category, Sundar recorded his personal best effort of 60.36m ahead of Dinesh Priyantha Herath (Sri Lanka) who emerged second with 57.93m, followed by defending champion Guo Chunliang (China) with 56.14m.</p>

<p>Failure is hard to digest. This is exactly what once happened to the newly crowned weightlifting world champion Saikhom Mirabai Chanu.</p>

<p>Mirabai, who brought laurels to the country by clinching a Gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championships last month, actually thought of quitting the sport after receiving flak for her failure to win a medal at the Rio Olympics.</p>

<p>&quot;I was really low after the Olympics. It took me a lot of time to get over the disappointment. I even thought of giving up the sport and stop training. The comments in social media, the criticism against my coach really hurt me,&quot; said Chanu, as reported by PTI.</p>

<p>To overcome the failure at the Olympics, Chanu left no stone unturned and worked on her technique and even went for regular sessions to her psychologist.</p>

<p>&quot;My psychologist also played a big role. I used to go to my psychologist twice in a month but after the Olympics, I started taking sessions every week and it really helped me,&quot; she added as per PTI.</p>

<p>In Rio 2016, Chanu had put up a disappointing performance as she could not get an overall total in women&#39;s 48 kg, after failing to lift the weight in any of her three attempts in clean and jerk section.</p>

<p>But now, after taking India to new heights, Chanu eyes the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games scheduled to take place next year.</p>
