News brief: Big stories of the day

Crowds of well-wishers cheered Britain`s Prince Harry as he made an impromptu walkabout on Friday outside the ancient walls of Windsor Castle on the eve of his wedding to U.S. actress Meghan Markle.

Queen Elizabeth`s grandson was joined by Prince William, his elder brother, and best man, as he mingled with excited fans waving red, white and blue Union flags less than 24 hours before Saturday`s lavish ceremony.

One fan handed the prince a teddy bear during the 10-minute excursion before the brothers waved to the royal fans chanting "We want Harry!" and returned to the castle. They were due to spend the night in a luxury hotel nearby.

"I`m gobsmacked. He was so lovely. I can`t get over he shook our hands," said Thelma Speed, 89.

Her daughter Deborah Goodes, 60, who named one of her sons after the prince, was equally smitten.

"I’ve seen him on the television, but in the flesh, he looked really great," she said. "I can see why she’s marrying him."

The walkabout in open-necked shirts came as the last touches were put in place for the royal extravaganza at the castle, to the west of London and home to monarchs for almost 1,000 years.

Harry, 33, will marry Markle, 36, a star of the TV drama "Suits", in the castle`s 15th-century St George`s Chapel at a ceremony that begins at 1100 GMT.

CHARLES TO TAKE FATHER`S PLACE

Harry`s office announced that his father Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, would walk Markle down the aisle in place of her father.

Thomas Markle, pulled out days before the event, telling the celebrity website TMZ he was recovering from heart surgery, in a family drama that played out in the glare of media attention.

Buckingham Palace said Markle`s African-American mother, Doria Ragland, had met the 92-year-old queen and her husband Prince Philip, 96 on Friday. It also confirmed that Philip, who had hip replacement surgery last month, would be at the wedding.

Markle and her mother, a yoga instructor who a royal source said had charmed Prince Charles when they met during the week, arrived at a luxury hotel near Windsor where they were to spend the night before the wedding. Markle said she felt "wonderful".

The well-wishers mingling with journalists and armed police were taking in the emotion as well as the pomp.

"Every daughter should have their dad but obviously he`s not very well. I do feel sorry for her. It must be heartbreaking for her," said Moira Moss, who was camping outside the castle.

A former army officer and one-time royal wild child, Harry met Markle in July 2016 on a blind date set up through a mutual friend. Markle said she had known little about him while Harry said he had never heard of Markle or watched her TV series.

MODERN BRITAIN?

After the schism of Brexit divided the United Kingdom and triggered a wave of doubt about its future place in the world, the glittering union of one of the most popular royals and an elegant U.S. divorcee may offer some distraction.

The British remain broadly supportive of the monarchy, albeit with a sense of mild irony about the pomp and pageantry that accompany it, though many have deep respect for the current monarch, Queen Elizabeth, after 66 years of dutiful service.

For some black Britons, the prospect of a mixed-race princess has increased interest in the monarchy, so far all white. The wedding address will be given by a black American bishop.

"Meghan will bring a new perspective to the royal family," royal biographer Claudia Joseph said. "Obviously she comes from a very different background and ... that’s hugely important to take the royal family into the future."

This wedding has drawn comparisons with some remarkable episodes of recent royal history: Edward VIII’s relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson, which led him to abdicate in 1936, and the queen’s late sister Margaret’s decision to call off her marriage to an equerry, Peter Townsend.

But many Britons will not even watch the wedding, despite massive media interest.

WEDDING FEVER

Markle is expected to enter the chapel alone with her bridesmaids and page boys before joining Charles in the choir - the area where the clergy and choristers sit.

After the hour-long ceremony, the couple will process through Windsor`s ancient streets in an open 19th-century Ascot Landau carriage pulled by four Windsor Grey horses.

Markle`s wedding cake - a lemon and elderflower creation with buttercream icing - took six bakers five days to prepare, according to its designer Claire Ptak.

Police were expecting more than 100,000 people to throng the streets outside the castle - the queen`s home and the oldest and largest inhabited fortress in the world.

Harry, the younger son of the late Princess Diana, has always been a popular member of the royal family.

At just 12 years old, he walked behind his mother`s coffin as her funeral cortege made its way through London after her death in a car crash in 1997.

He has spoken publicly about the pain of that loss, supported the cause of wounded veterans, and embraced campaigns for awareness about mental health.

“I remember Princess Diana dying," said Nick Lemin, 45 who grew up in Windsor but now lives in Brisbane, Australia. "I think she’d be very, very proud of Prince Harry and the family and how they are living their lives."

Windsor Castle was badly damaged by a fire in 1992, a year Elizabeth famously described as an “annus horribilis” after three of her four children’s marriages failed, including Charles` marriage to Diana.

Well-wishers cheered Britain`s Prince Harry as he made an impromptu walkabout on Friday

"I can see why she’s marrying him." The walkabout in open-necked shirts came as the last touches were put in place for the royal extravaganza at the castle, to the west of London and home to monarchs for almost 1,000 years. Harry, 33, will marry Markle, 36, a star of the TV drama "Suits", in the castle`s 15th-century St George`s Chapel at a ceremony that begins at 1100 GMT. CHARLES TO TAKE FATHER`S PLACE Harry`s office announced that his father Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, would walk Markle down the aisle in place of her father. Thomas Markle, pulled out days before the event, telling the celebrity website TMZ he was recovering from heart surgery, in a family drama that played out in the glare of media attention. Cheering crowds greet Harry on walkabout ahead of UK wedding extravaganza

Prince Harry weds U.S. actress Meghan Markle on Saturday in a lavish ceremony that unites the pomp of British royalty with Hollywood glamour.

Hundreds of millions of people across the world are expected to tune in to watch the wedding of Queen Elizabeth`s popular grandson and the American star of the TV drama "Suits" at the 15th Century St George`s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

More than 100,000 fans will cram the narrow streets of the town 20 miles (30 km) west of London, dominated by the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world, a home to 39 English monarchs since 1066.

"I love all the regalia, all the hoo-hahs, the procession with the cavalry," said Jane Tofolo, 50, from southwest London, who shook hands with Harry when he held an impromptu walkabout with his brother and best man outside the castle on Friday evening.

"It will be spectacular because us Brits do all that very well."

Harry, 33, is sixth in line to the British throne. Markle, 36, is a divorcee whose mother is African-American and father is white.

For many, the wedding is a fairytale. For some black Britons, it illustrates the breakdown of barriers in modern Britain.

To others, it is an irrelevance. Polls have suggested that most Britons will not bother tuning in to watch the event.

The hour-long ceremony begins at 1100 GMT, with weather forecasts predicting blue skies and sunshine.

The bride will arrive at the church with her mother, Doria Ragland, 61, with whom she was spending Friday night at a luxury hotel. Harry was staying at another hotel with elder brother and best man Prince William, whose daughter Charlotte and son George will be among the bridesmaids and page boys.

CHARLES TO LEAD MEGHAN

Harry`s father and heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles will walk his future daughter-in-law down the aisle after Markle`s father pulled out due to ill health.

Thomas Markle, 73, a lighting director for TV soaps and sitcoms, told the U.S. celebrity website TMZ he had undergone heart surgery on Wednesday. Confusion over his attendance marred the build-up to the wedding, which had been carefully choreographed for months by royal aides.

On Friday, Ragland met the 92-year-old monarch and her husband Prince Philip, 96, who will be among the senior royals in the 600-strong congregation. It will also include a smattering of celebrities, including fellow cast members of Markle from "Suits".

The service will be conducted by the Dean of Windsor with Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury and the spiritual head of the Anglican Church, overseeing the exchange of vows. A black U.S. bishop, Most Reverend Michael Bruce Curry, will give the wedding address.

After the ceremony, the newlyweds are expected to greet some of the 1,200 members of the public specially invited into the grounds of the castle before setting off on a carriage procession through Windsor.

A reception will be held in the castle`s St George`s Hall before 200 guests join the couple at an evening event at Frogmore House, another grand mansion in the grounds.

The prince and his new wife, who are expected to be given a new title by the queen to mark their marriage, are not immediately leaving on honeymoon and will carry out their first official engagement as husband and wife next week.

Educated at the exclusive Eton College, a stone`s throw from Windsor, Harry, the younger son of the late Princess Diana, gained a reputation as a royal wild child.

He admitted smoking cannabis, getting drunk when underage in a pub, scuffled with paparazzi outside a London nightclub and drew outrage by dressing as a Nazi officer at a party.

But he turned his image around after joining the army, where he spent 10 years and included two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Last year, he spoke openly of his emotional torment following the 1997 death of his mother in a Paris car crash. Aged just 12, he walked solemnly behind her coffin in the funeral cortege.

BLIND DATE

He met Markle on a blind date in July 2016 set up through a mutual friend. Harry said he had never heard of his future wife or watched her TV series, and she said she knew nothing of the prince.

But after just two dates, he whisked her off to Botswana for a holiday, camping under the stars.

"The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was confirmation to me that all the stars were aligned, everything was just perfect," Harry said when their engagement was announced last November.

Harry`s gilded upbringing is in stark contrast with Markle`s. She was born and raised in Los Angeles and her parents divorced when she was six.

After a number of minor roles in films and on TV, she won the role as Rachel Zane in "Suits". She ran a successful lifestyle blog, thetig.com, and has worked as a humanitarian campaigner. In 2011, she married film producer Trevor Engelson but they divorced in 2013.

The intense spotlight on her father this week was indicative of the limelight she now faces.

Harry issued a public rebuke to journalists when they were dating, accusing some of sexism and racism. The prince has long had a testy relationship with the media. His mother`s limousine was being chased by paparazzi just before her fatal crash.

Hollywood mixes with royalty: The guest list at the royal wedding

As far afield as the windswept Falkland Islands, battered by the South Atlantic and home to colonies of penguins, the glittering royal wedding was a cause for celebration on Saturday.

Many residents of the Falklands, one of Britain`s remote outposts left over from imperial days, are fiercely patriotic and were looking forward to flying the Union Jack flag in honor of Prince Harry and his American bride Meghan Markle.

"As a Falkland Islander, I definitely feel a bond with the royal family as a symbol of Britishness. I am a staunch royalist," said Arlette Betts, speaking in her home on the waterfront in Port Stanley, the tiny capital and home to most of the archipelago`s 4,000 inhabitants.

Argentina disputes Britain`s sovereignty over the Falklands, which lie 300 miles (500 km) from the Argentine coast, and the two countries fought a war in 1982 over the islands. As a result, the British military is popular with the Islanders.

"I think we can all relate to them here in the islands, particularly since the young lads served in the military," said Leona Roberts, a member of the archipelago`s Legislative Assembly.

She was referring to Prince Harry and his older brother Prince William, who both had military careers before dedicating themselves full-time to royal duties.
Roberts was one of the organizers of a royal wedding party due to take place at the Falkland Islands Defence Force headquarters, where children were expected to dress up as princes and princesses and receive special gifts.

Betts, however, intended to spend the day at home in front of the television so she could give her full attention to events in faraway Windsor.

"I think some people are having a party but I would not want that. I like to be able to take it all in without being disturbed," she said.

The Falklands were just one of the locations many worlds away from Windsor Castle where people were celebrating the royal nuptials.

In India, a group of Mumbai`s famed dabbawalas, or lunch delivery men, chose a traditional sari dress and kurta jacket as wedding gifts for Harry and his bride, while at the Gurukul School of Art children painted posters of the royal couple and Queen Elizabeth.

In Australia, where the British monarch remains the head of state, some pubs were planning wedding parties, while a cinema chain was screening the event live across its network. Viewers were encouraged to come dressed in fun finery, with prizes for the most creative outfits.

In Melbourne, fashion designer Nadia Foti was planning to attend an "English high tea" where guests would wear plastic crowns and enjoy traditional British treats such as scones and the popular summer drink Pimm`s.

"It`s exciting for the fashion and the spectacular," said Foti. "It`s a joyous occasion and I`ve made a plum cake to celebrate in the classic English style."

American actress Meghan Markle wore a sleek dress by British designer Clare Waight Keller for her wedding to Prince Harry on Saturday, Kensington Palace said.

The long-sleeved dress with a boat neck had been eagerly anticipated by royal fans around the world for months, with speculation over which designer would have the coveted role of making the frock.

"The lines of the dress extend towards the back where the train flows in soft round folds cushioned by an underskirt in triple silk organza. The slim three-quarter sleeves add a note of refined modernity."

Priyanka Chopra at Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's wedding

As the world gears up to see Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot in a traditional manner on May 19 at St. George's Chapel, India also has a few ambassadors representing the country at the highly televised event.

Apart from Indian actress Priyanka Chopra, there are three other Indians attending the wedding.

Suhani Jalota from Mumbai who is the founder Myna Mahila Foundation, the NGO that promotes menstrual hygiene and was selected by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle as one of the seven charities to benefit from donations from the Royal Wedding.

The foundation is also one of seven charities the royal couple has selected for guests to donate money to in lieu of gifts after Markle visited it last year.

She will make her way from London to Windsor Castle, 20 miles away, to attend the royal wedding.

''It is a great honour and responsibility because I will be a representative of India at the wedding,'' Suhani Jalota

She will be wearing a peach sari and will be accompanied by three other women from her Myna Mahila Foundation.

Archana Ambre, 25, a sales manager from Myna Mahila Foundation who lives in Mankhurd slum, and Deborah Das, 31, production and HR manager with the charity, from Maharashtra Nagar slum, will also join the star-studded guest list with Suhani Jalota at the wedding inside Windsor Castle.

Neither Ambre nor Das had ever flown on an aeroplane before. In fact, Das did not even have a passport when she got the invitation card printed in gold with her name on in the post a month ago.

They have received invitations to the wedding alongside the founder of the charity, Suhani Jalota, 23, and its UK volunteer, Imogen Mansfield, 26.

Suhani Jalota is one of the 600 guests attending the St George’s Chapel service, whereas the other three will watch from inside the grounds of Windsor Castle alongside 100 schoolchildren, charity representatives and handpicked members of the public.

Apart from the Queen and royalty, famous stars like singer Sir Elton John, American tennis star Serena Williams, Meghan’s Suits co-stars, designer Mino Nonoo, and Victoria and David Beckham will also be seen.

“Meghan is sincere and well-researched. When she came to see us, she did not just talk about women’s empowerment because it was trendy. She knew her stuff,” Jalota said. “She said she would help us in any way she could. We never anticipated something like this would happen. It is an honour to be representing India — I feel so excited. It was a huge shock. I am looking forward to seeing Meghan and the other charities and we are really excited about seeing Priyanka.”

Victoria Beckham and David Beckham arrive for the royal wedding

Prince Harry and U.S. actress Meghan Markle marry on Saturday in a lavish ceremony that unites the traditional pomp of British royalty with Hollywood glamour, injecting new life into a monarchy striving to stay relevant in the modern age.

Millions around the world are expected to watch when Elizabeth`s popular grandson and the American star of the TV drama "Suits" tie the knot at the 15th Century St George`s Chapel in Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest inhabited castle in the world.

As dawn broke over its ancient stone walls, excited crowds began to assemble, many draped in British and American flags.

"I just think it will be magical. There will be so much shouting and cheering and noise. I love the royal family," said Ronda Musgrove, 59, who camped overnight on the street opposite.

More than 100,000 fans are expected to cram the narrow roads of Windsor, about 20 miles (30 km) west of London. Security was tight and visitors had to pass through police search points set up around the castle, home to 39 English monarchs since 1066

The world`s media has been gripped by the union of Harry, 33, the sixth-in-line to the British throne, and Markle, 36, a divorcee whose mother is African-American and father is white, and hundreds of TV crews have descended on Windsor.

To some black Britons, the wedding is a fairytale which personifies the breakdown of barriers and reveals a more modern Britain where a person`s background is no obstacle to even the most elite and traditional of institutions.

To others, it is an irrelevance or mild distraction to the schism of Brexit which has deeply divided the United Kingdom, and polls have suggested that most Britons will not bother tuning in to watch the event.

The hour-long ceremony begins at 1100 GMT, with weather forecasts predicting blue skies and sunshine.

The bride will arrive at the church with her mother, Doria Ragland, 61, with whom she was spent Friday night at a luxury hotel. Harry was staying at another hotel with elder brother and best man Prince William, whose daughter Charlotte and son George will be among the bridesmaids and page boys.

MARKLE`S MODERN OATH

Markle will enter the chapel unescorted. Then Harry`s father and heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles will walk his future daughter-in-law down the aisle.

Her own father Thomas Markle, 73, a lighting director for TV soaps and sitcoms, pulled out this week, telling the U.S. celebrity website TMZ he had undergone heart surgery on Wednesday.

Confusion over his attendance marred the build-up to the wedding, which had been carefully choreographed for months by royal aides and his name still appears in the order of service.

In a sign of modernity for the Royals, Harry will wear a ring while Markle will vow not to obey her husband. Interspersed with traditional hymns, a choir will perform American soul singer Ben E. King`s 196o`s hit "Stand by me".

His easy-going manner with the public is reminiscent of Diana, and he has picked up her campaigning baton with work on the welfare of military veterans, helping those with AIDS, and mental health issues.

WILD CHILD TURNED POPULAR PRINCE

Harry, who has long had a testy relationship with the media, issued a public rebuke to journalists when they were dating, accusing some of sexism and racism. His mother`s limousine was being chased by paparazzi just before her fatal crash.

Over the last 20 years since Diana`s death, the Royals have enjoyed much better media coverage with a sophisticated PR operation helping to turn round the perception of a hopelessly out-of-touch institution where the tribulations of the queen`s children were played out in national newspapers.

Elizabeth famously described 1992 as an "annus horribilis" (horrible year) after three of her four children’s marriages failed, including Charles` marriage to Diana, and part of Windsor Castle was badly damaged by fire.

The British remain broadly supportive of the monarchy albeit with a sense of mild irony about the pomp and pageantry that accompanies it, though many have deep respect for Elizabeth, after her 66 years of service.

Harry, along with brother William and his wife Kate, are at the forefront of an effort to modernise the monarchy by talking openly about their innermost feelings.

"It is just a maxim it is patently obvious the more you say, the more you can be examined," royal historian Hugo Vickers said. "Everything moves on gradually but there are certain risks and there is a lot to be said for maintaining the mystique."

After cold nights on Windsor streets, royal super-fans thrilled as big day dawns

With less than a day left for arrangements for the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle that is to take place tomorrow, the British Armed Forces have started practice with full dress rehearsals to start with. The world will see the British Queen Elizabeth’s descendants get married after a gap of 7 years as Prince William and Kate Middleton got married in 2011.

Their “dress rehearsal” today includes practising the long walk that is literally on an avenue called the Long Walk -- through Windsor Town and Castle, rehearsing the route of the carriage procession that Markle and the Prince will embark upon just after they take their wedding vows in St. George’s Chapel on Saturday afternoon. Also Read: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's cake will break with tradition, says royal wedding baker

The entire street up from the Castle will be decked with horses, riders in top hats, elaborately gilded helmets, crisp military uniforms and plenty of British flags for that extra touch of patriotism.

As revealed by the official sources, the Kensington Palace Twitter account, more than 250 members of the Armed Forces will be involved for “ceremonial support,” including “regiments and units with a special relationship with Prince Harry.” This, because Prince Harry served in the military for a decade, taking part in two tours to Afghanistan as a member of the Blues and Royals and the Army Air Corps. He also holds the title of Captain General of the Royal Marines.

Prince Charles to walk Meghan Markle down the aisle

Across the road from Queen Elizabeth`s Windsor Castle home, Lewis Davis huddles under a bus shelter, one of the many town`s homeless people who sleep rough in doorways in the genteel town.

Opposite, a new array of sleeping bags has appeared, the temporary home for royal superfans, some of whom have travelled thousands of miles to spend their days and nights on Windsor`s streets for a glimpse of the queen`s grandson Prince Harry and his fiancee Meghan Markle`s on their glittering wedding day.&nbsp

"They’ve got their own home, they’re camping. We actually live out here. That’s the difference," Davis, originally from the nearby town of Slough, told Reuters.

The issue of rough sleepers in Windsor made headlines in January when the local council leader said they would be cleared from the streets before Saturday`s wedding because their “detritus” was presenting the quaint town, dominated by the castle to the west of London, in a poor light.&nbsp

Simon Dudley, the leader of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead council, wrote on Twitter there had been an “epidemic of rough sleeping and vagrancy” in the town and said he wanted police “to focus on dealing with this before the #RoyalWedding”. His remarks drew criticism from local homeless organisations and even Prime Minister Theresa May.

"They shouldn’t really hide the fact that there are homeless people here," Davis said. "They should help us."

Homelessness has become a high-profile political issue in recent months, with official figures showing that there were 4,134 rough sleepers counted on a single night in England in autumn 2016, an increase of 134 percent since 2010 when there were fewer than 1,800.

The government has set a target of halving rough sleeping by 2022 and abolishing it by 2027, with May promising to spend 500 million pounds on tackling homelessness.

SUPERFANS

Other rough sleepers in Windsor said they feared that the authorities would clear them from the town`s streets before the wedding on Saturday - in stark contrast to the welcome that the royal fans, nestled down beneath swathes of fluttering red, white and blue bunting, had received.

Thames Valley Police, the local force in charge of the wedding security, they were working closely with the council and local services to “offer support” to the homeless in Windsor.

"A scheme has been set up for those who choose, to store their belongings at the Windsor Homeless Project during the Royal Wedding, and our officers have been assisting with transport of belongings, however this is entirely voluntary to ensure the safety of the homeless community," police said.

The council said all those sleeping rough had been offered somewhere to stay or a place to house their belongings while the more than 100,000 visitors throng the streets of Windsor this weekend.&nbsp

"We hope individuals will take up the offer to so that we can help prevent them from losing possessions on a day when the town will be extremely busy," the council said in a statement. &nbsp

The superfans by the castle have been banned from erecting tents as part of tight security measures and they were sympathetic to the homeless living just a stone’s throw away from where they were camping. &nbsp &nbsp“Everybody needs a place to sleep,” said American Donna Werner, who had travelled 3,000 miles from New Fairfield, Connecticut, to camp by the castle for several days. &nbsp &nbsp"Everybody’s not as lucky as some of us ... I feel bad for them," she said.

Fans have already started gathering outside Windsor castle days before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding.

U.S. actress Meghan Markle confirmed on Thursday her father would not be attending her wedding to Britain`s Prince Harry, the grandson of Queen Elizabeth, putting an end to days of speculation.

Markle`s father, Thomas, had been due to walk his daughter down the aisle at the glittering ceremony at St George`s Chapel at Windsor Castle on Saturday.

But the former lighting director for TV soaps and sitcoms gave a series of contradictory statements this week about whether he would be there, with the Los Angeles saying he had undergone heart surgery on Wednesday.

"I would like to thank everyone who has offered generous messages of support. Please know how much Harry and I look forward to sharing our special day with you on Saturday."

Saturday`s wedding will be a sumptuous show of British pageantry, likely to attract a huge world audience.

Supporters hope the union of one of the most popular royals and a glamorous American actress, a divorcee with a white father and an African-American mother, will reinvigorate the monarchy.

However, much of the carefully-planned and choreographed build-up to the ceremony has been overshadowed by confusion over whether Markle`s father.

Meghan Markle confirms father will not attend her wedding to Prince Harry

Months before meeting the Queen for the first time and having a "cuppa" with her Majesty, Meghan Markle brushed up on tea drinking etiquette at a cottage near Los Angeles -- where she was apparently a natural.

"Well, she learned it all here," Edmund Fry, the British-born owner of Rose Tree Cottage in Pasadena, told AFP in an interview this week. "On a scale of one to 10, by the time she finished coming to us, I would say she would probably be a 9.5.

"But I have to say that because I want her to come back for the other half point."&nbsp

Fry said the California-born actress, who will marry Prince Harry this weekend, on several occasions visited the picturesque tea room -- decked out with all things British -- where she was given the inside track on tea drinking.

"She came with friends and was very relaxed and very much in control," he recalled.

He said he shared some tips on the quintessential tea experience with the soon-to-be new member of the royal family, as she munched on traditional finger sandwiches and scones.

No slurping or dribbling
"I do believe that I mentioned, as I always do, that the handle of the cup is always left at three o'clock of course ... and the spoon always needs to be left at six o'clock and 12 o'clock," said the 77-year-old, who dresses in tails and white gloves while serving and educating his customers.

He added that Markle seemed like a natural on her repeated visits and was unlikely to make any faux pas -- like slurping or using her napkin to blow her nose or wipe her glasses &nbsp-- while sipping tea with the Queen.

"I remember telling her one of the habits in this country is people tend to get much more palsy walsy with their cup ... and they move it in front of them," Fry said, raising his eyebrows in despair.&nbsp

"Maybe it's because they have a tendency to dribble, I'm not sure," he added.

"But this is not a good thing to do."

Another no-no he shared with Markle, he said, was changing the table setting.

"If you were at the palace, you wouldn't dream of moving the cutlery and the silver or the china away from the place where it should be," he said.

Traditional English scones served with tea should also be sliced sideways and topped with jam and clotted cream before each half is eaten separately, pleaded Fry, who looks like a character straight out of "Downton Abbey."

"You don't want to put the two halves together because it ends up looking like a quarter pound hamburger, and the last thing you want is people having cream come down their jowls," he said in his cut-glass British accent.&nbsp

And please, when drinking tea, refrain from slurping or clinking the cup with the spoon when stirring, he added.

As for crooking the little finger while holding the cup and saucer, Fry said that was optional.

"It's not wrong to have your finger in, but ladies tend to leave the pinky slightly crooked," he said.

Fry said he will be celebrating Harry and Meghan's nuptials on Saturday with a wedding party, and will always keep a table open for the newlyweds.

"She will always have a table here, and Harry of course," he said. "There will be the time when he wants real bacon and he'll come here for it."

News brief: Five big stories of the day

Meghan Markle will be accompanied at her wedding to Prince Harry on Saturday by six bridesmaids, including 3-year-old Princess Charlotte, Kensington Palace announced today. There were earlier reports that Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra would be one of Markle's bridesmaids. Chopra is a friend of the bride and would be attending the wedding.

Princess Charlotte, fourth in line to the British throne, is the second child and only daughter of Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge.

She will join her uncle's wedding party at St George's Chapel in the town of Windsor, around 40 kms west of London.

Her elder brother, Prince George, aged four, will be a page boy alongside three other young boys.

He has performed the role of page boy previously for his aunt Pippa Middleton's wedding last year.

So far, the details of the bridesmaids' dresses and the page boys' uniforms remain under wraps, the BBC reported.

Markle, 36, will not have a maid of honour as she wanted to avoid choosing just one of her closest friends, it said.

Merkle is a humanitarian activist and former American actress.

As well as his niece and nephew, Prince Harry has also picked three godchildren - three-year-old Florence van Cutsem, two-year-old Zalie Warren and Jasper Dyer, six - to have starring roles on his big day.

Markle's goddaughters, Remi Litt, six, and her elder sister, Rylan, seven, will also be joining the procession of bridesmaids.

The three children of one of her best friends, Jessica Mulroney - Ivy, four, and Brian and John, both seven - will complete the picture.

Jessica is married to Ben Mulroney, a Canadian TV host and son of former Canadian prime minister, Brian Mulroney.

Prince George, the son of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, will have the experience to lean on - he was page boy at his aunt Pippa Middleton's wedding to James Matthews last year.

His sister, Charlotte, recently showed she was undaunted by the limelight when she visited her little brother, Prince Louis, at hospital after his birth.

With the world's cameras trained on Charlotte, she seemed to enjoy the attention, waving sweetly and smiling at the bank of photographers, the report said.

There are reports that Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra, also among Markle's close friends, is likely to be among the guests invited to the wedding celebrations.

Markle's mother Doria Ragland, who flew in from the US this week to meet the in-laws, is expected to step into the role of walking her daughter to the wedding altar.

The announcement on bridesmaids comes during a turbulent week for the royal couple. After first telling TMZ he would not be flying to the UK to walk his daughter Meghan down the aisle as planned, Thomas Markle later said he had changed his mind, according to the US-based celebrity news site.

"I hate the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history and walking my daughter down the aisle," he said yesterday, according to TMZ.

Markle has been involved in controversy since it was revealed he allegedly staged a series of photos captured by an American paparazzo.

Just hours later, the news site reported that Markle would not be attending as he said he would be undergoing heart surgery today, just three days before the royal wedding.

After news of Actress Meghan Markle's father decided to pull out of the Royal wedding which is set to take place on Saturday, reports on Tuesday said that the reason behind his absence is because he needed a heart procedure.

Thomas Markle, who lives in Mexico, was quoted as telling Los Angeles-based celebrity website TMZ.com that he was scheduled to undergo a heart repair and blockage clearance procedure early on Wednesday morning.

Markle, 73, was due to walk his daughter down the aisle in front of 600 guests including all the senior British royals and a smattering of celebrities.

On Tuesday, Markle told TMZ that he hated "the idea of missing one of the greatest moments in history and walking my daughter down the aisle."
But he later said doctors had scheduled surgery on Wednesday morning.

"They (doctors) will go in and clear blockage, repair damage and put a stent where it is needed," Markle told the website. Kensington Palace, Harry`s office, could not immediately be reached for comment on Tuesday.

But in a statement issued on Monday, it said called Thomas Markle`s comments "a deeply personal moment for Ms Markle."

"She and Prince Harry ask again for understanding and respect to be extended to Markle in this difficult situation," Kensington Palace said.

Earlier, it was said that he was not going to attend the wedding as he did not want to embarrass his daughter or the royal family after reports he had staged pictures with a paparazzi photographer for a fee. He also said he had suffered a heart attack a week ago.

Thousands of journalists from across the world are descending on the genteel town of Windsor for the wedding, and Thomas Markle told TMZ earlier this week that the media attention had taken its toll. He said he had been offered up to $100,000 for interviews and been ambushed by paparazzi whose snaps had shown him buying beer and looking disheveled.

TMZ said he had agreed to the staged pictures, which showed him looking at images of the couple on a computer and being sized up for a suit because he hoped they would improve his image.

The bride-to-be`s parents are divorced and while Harry has been pictured with her mother Doria Ragland, 61, there had been speculation about how Thomas Markle, a former lighting director for TV soaps and sitcoms, would feature.

However, the TMZ website reported on Monday that he had decided not to attend the glittering wedding at the castle, the home of English and British monarchs for almost 1,000 years.

When Harry weds Meghan: Queen gives formal consent to marriage

Britain's Prince Harry weds American actress Meghan Markle next Saturday in a union of youthful royalty and Hollywood glamour expected to reinvigorate the venerable House of Windsor.

Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth and sixth-in-line to the throne, and Markle, star of US&nbspTV drama "Suits" will tie the knot next Saturday at Windsor Castle, home to the British royal family for nearly 1,000 years.

With celebrities expected to join the queen and senior royals for the ceremony and reception, thousands of journalists from across the globe will descend on the picturesque town of Windsor.

"It's absolutely marvellous. It's going to be a very special day for everybody," Harry's father Prince Charles said during a visit to France this week.

Harry, 33, a former army officer and one-time royal wild child, met his bride-to-be on a blind date in July 2016 after being set up through a mutual friend. Markle, 36, said she knew little about her royal date while Harry said he had never heard of Markle or watched her TV series.

However, it was love at first sight, and after just two dates, he whisked her off to Botswana for an intimate holiday, camping under the stars.

"The fact that I fell in love with Meghan so incredibly quickly was confirmation to me that all the stars were aligned, everything was just perfect," Harry said in an interview to mark the engagement last November.

"This beautiful woman just tripped and fell into my life, I fell into her life."

Saturday's wedding will take place at St George's Chapel of Windsor Castle, the queen's home west of London and the oldest and largest inhabited fortress in the world.

Some 40 monarchs have called the castle home and the chapel contains the remains of 10 kings, including Henry VIII and George VI, Elizabeth's father.

Set against all this tradition, Markle is a stark contrast in modernity. As a divorcee, with a white father and African-American mother, her background has provided a source of huge interest and comment, not all positive.

Harry's Kensington Palace office issued a rebuke to the media in November 2016, decrying the sexism and racism Markle had suffered in some press reports.

Markle's family has continued to come under scrutiny, with her half-siblings criticising her in newspapers and saying they had been snubbed after not receiving invitations to the wedding.

However, both her divorced parents, mother Doria Ragland, a clinical therapist, and father Thomas Markle, a former TV lighting director for soaps and sitcoms, will play "important roles" on the day.

Markle is due to arrive at the chapel in a car with her mother, while her father will escort her down the aisle.

Perspective

This wedding has drawn comparisons with some remarkable episodes of recent royal history: Edward VIII's relationship with American divorcee Wallis Simpson, which led him to abdicate in 1936, and the queen's late sister Margaret's decision to call off her marriage to an equerry Peter Townsend.

"Meghan will bring a new perspective to the royal family," royal biographer Claudia Joseph said. "Obviously she comes from a very different background and ... that's hugely important to take the royal family into the future."

The younger son of the late Princess Diana, Harry has always been a hugely popular figure member of the royal family.

A cheeky child who stuck his tongue out at photographers, he left a lasting memory in the minds of many when aged just 12, he walked solemnly behind his mother's coffin as her funeral cortege made its way through London after her death in a car crash in 1997.

"I don't think any child should be asked to do that, under any circumstances. I don't think it would happen today," he said in an interview published last June.

The impact of her death threw the prince off the rails, and his teenage years were overshadowed by negative headlines. In 2002 he admitted smoking cannabis and getting drunk when underage in a pub near the royal family's country estate.

He later scuffled with paparazzi outside a London nightclub and caused outrage by dressing as a Nazi officer at a party.

He began to get his life back on track after joining the army, serving two tours of duty in Afghanistan and escaping the media scrutiny and other trappings of his gilded upbringing.

Popular

Now a campaigner on mental health issues, he says he was close to a breakdown in his 20s. Such frank admissions of frailty have resonated with Britons as has his natural ease when mingling with the public.

"One of the reasons why Prince Harry is so popular is when he was young he was something of a wild child, he got himself into a number of scrapes," said royal historian Hugo Vickers.

"All that has served to do is make him even more popular."

A poll last week found 71 percent of respondents had a favourable view of Harry. That made him the second-highest rated members of the royals, just behind his brother but ahead of the 92-year-old queen.

Markle, who was born in Los Angeles, made her first TV appearance in a 2002 episode of the medical drama "General Hospital" and has appeared in other TV shows and films.

In 2011, she married film producer Trevor Engelson but they divorced two years later. She achieved the greatest fame as an actress for her starring part as Rachel Zane in the legal drama "Suits". She bowed out of the series last month after her character married her long-time love interest.

Meghan will not become a princess in her own right, but her unlikely marriage to Harry has led many to describe it as a magical children's story.

"The Americans love the British royal family and when you have an American actress marrying a British royal prince, it is the stuff of fairy tales," biographer Joseph said.

However, certainly not everyone in Britain agrees and an opinion poll this week suggested more than half the country would not watch the wedding.

"The idea that someone's aspiration should be to marry into someone else's wealth and status, the idea that Meghan Markle wasn't already successful in her own right, I don't think that's ok," Graham Smith, the chief executive of the anti-monarchist campaign group Republic, told Reuters.

"That's not my idea of a fairy tale."

Popular Now a campaigner on mental health issues, he says he was close to a breakdown in his 20s. Such frank admissions of frailty have resonated with Britons as has his natural ease when mingling with the public. "One of the reasons why Prince Harry is so popular is when he was young he was something of a wild child, he got himself into a number of scrapes," said royal historian Hugo Vickers. "All that has served to do is make him even more popular." A poll last week found 71 percent of respondents had a favourable view of Harry.

When Harry weds Meghan: A week until Britain's royal wedding

She is now royalty so it natural that she would find a place at Madame Tussauds London. The waxwork of "Suits" actress Meghan Markle, who is set to wed Prince Harry later this month, is the latest addition to Madame Tussauds museum.

"Dressed in their famous engagement announcement outfits, Meghan`s figure sports the sold-out green P.A.R.O.S.H. dress and a replica of the engagement ring designed by Harry himself, with some added Madame Tussauds London magic to make it sparkle elegantly on the future Duchess` perfectly manicured hand," the museum said in a statement.

Ahead of her wedding, Meghan Markle finds a place in UK's Madame Tussauds

When she marries her prince next week, Meghan Markle will join a distinguished line of American citizens who have become real-life royalty over the years - though not all their love stories had fairy-tale endings.

The wedding vows that Markle and Britain's Prince Harry will exchange at Windsor Castle on May 19 will transform the Los Angeles-born divorced actress into nobility. Afterwards, she will have plenty of women to serve as her role model for the "Dos and Don'ts" of being royal.

Markle could seek to follow in the footsteps of Princess Grace of Monaco, said John Lehman, whose cousin Grace Kelly was a Hollywood star whose 1956 marriage to Prince Rainier III made her Princess Grace of the small Mediterranean principality.

"She went through some awkward years getting the people in Monaco to accept her," said Lehman last week.

Studying hard to overcome cultural barriers in her adopted country, Princess Grace quickly mastered the French language and won the hearts of royalty and commoners alike.

"It didn't take too long before she was 'their' princess," said Lehman, a former U.S. navy secretary who often visited Princess Grace at her palace before she died in a car crash in 1982. He is now chairman of the Princess Grace Foundation-USA, which supports emerging artists.

A less promising predecessor may be Baltimore socialite and divorcee Wallis Simpson, the wife of Britain's King Edward VIII. The king abdicated the throne in 1936 in order to marry Simpson.

From the outset, the British establishment was uncomfortable with her because she was so outspoken, said Anne Sebba, author of "That Woman: The Life of Wallis Simpson Duchess of Windsor."

"I think the problem for Wallis really was that she was brash," Sebba said. "She would walk into a room and say, 'Hi, I'm Wallis.' She'd wear lots of jewelry. She'd talk about money."

Queen Noor of Jordan, who was married to King Hussein from 1978 until his death in 1999, also is from the United States.

Lee Radziwill, a sister of former U.S. first lady Jacqueline Kennedy, is an American socialite whose 1959 marriage to Prince Stanislaw Albrecht Radziwill of Poland ended in divorce 15 years later.
