Touching Queen Elizabeth has long been considered one of the greatest taboos surrounding the British monarch, one of the unwritten rules about how people are expected to behave around the royal family.

When American actress Meghan Markle walks down the aisle of St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle to marry the queen's grandson Prince Harry on May 19, she will have to have mastered those protocols.

Lucy Hume, the associate director at Debrett's, a professional coaching company founded in 1769 and an authority on modern British etiquette, explains how members of the public should act if they happen to meet a member of Britain's royal family.

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I MEET A MEMBER OF THE ROYAL FAMILY?

"One of the key things to bear in mind is how to greet a member of the royal family when you meet them for the first time, and it's customary in a formal situation for women to curtsy - a brief bob is sufficient - and for men to bow from the neck."

WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I MEET A ROYAL AT A LESS FORMAL EVENT?

"Sometimes you might encounter a member of the royal family at a reception or a less formal occasion, in which case it might be appropriate to shake their hand, but it's best to wait for them to offer their hand first before you reach out yours."

WHAT DO I CALL THE ROYALS WHEN I MEET THEM?

"If you are introduced to the queen, you address her as 'Your Majesty'. Any other members of the royal family are addressed as 'Your Royal Highness' and for women you thereafter would call them 'Ma'am' and, for men, you would call them 'Sir'."

CAN I ASK A ROYAL FOR A SELFIE?

"It's not usually appropriate to do so. So if you do want to take a photograph, ask their permission first, possibly get somebody else to take a photograph but it's important to respect that person's personal space."

IS IT OKAY FOR ME TO PUT MY ARM AROUND A ROYAL?

"Best not to initiate personal physical contact with a member of the royal family. Again, it may be that they offered to give you a hug or to put their arm around you, but usually wait and see what's expected or what's appropriate for the event."

WHAT HAPPENS IF I GET SOMETHING WRONG?

"You're not going to be in trouble. There are no official legal rules in place. Apologise if you feel you may have caused offence, but try not to panic, and stay calm."

WILL THE ROYALS BE KIND TO ME IF I MESS UP?

"It would seem from what we've seen of members of the royal family in public that they are very accustomed to a variety of different situations. They meet people from different backgrounds all the time and they're very accustomed to putting people at ease it's unlikely you would cause offence."

Meghan Markle's post-wedding challenge: Master British royal protocol

Meghan Markle's father will walk her down the aisle at St George's Chapel in Windsor Castle to marry Prince Harry on May 19, the Kensington Palace announced today.

Thomas Markle, 73, will be by the side of his daughter, who will drive up to the wedding venue with her mother, Doria Ragland, 61.

"Both of the bride's parents will have important roles in the wedding. On the morning of the wedding, Ms Ragland will travel with Ms Markle by car to Windsor Castle," the Kensington Palace statement said.

"Mr Markle will walk his daughter down the aisle of St George's Chapel. Ms Markle is delighted to have her parents by her side on this important and happy occasion," the statement said.

Thomas Markle, a former Hollywood lighting director, now lives in retirement in Mexico. There had been a lot of media speculation if he would be part of the wedding ceremony as American actress Markle was known to be closer to her mother, who divorced her father in 1988.

Ragland, a yoga enthusiast, reportedly works at a non-profit mental health clinic and specialises in helping the geriatric community in the US.&nbsp

But the Kensington Palace has confirmed that they both will be an important part of the wedding party. The bride-to-be's parents will arrive a week before the wedding to meet senior royals, including Harry's grandparents -? Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh.

They will also meet her fiance's father, Prince Charles, as well as Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The announcement comes soon after Thomas Markle Junior, Meghan's half-brother on her paternal side, wrote an open letter claiming his father was not invited to the wedding.

In the harshly-worded letter, he also warned Prince Harry that his half-sister was a "jaded, shallow, conceited woman" and marrying her was "the biggest mistake in royal wedding history".

In other details released by the Kensington Palace today said, the 36-year-old Markle will not have a maid of honour and all her bridesmaids as well as pageboys at the ceremony will be children.&nbsp

During the ceremony, Lady Jane Fellowes, the older sister of Harry's late mother Princess Diana, will give a reading as a representative of his mother's Spencer side of the family.

The location of the couple's honeymoon has not yet been revealed. However, the first royal engagement of the newly-weds will be the week after the wedding.

The Kensington Palace also released details of what members of the public can expect on the big day. Around 1,200 people have been invited into the grounds of Windsor Castle to participate in a large picnic as part of the wedding ceremony. The Windsor town centre will be decorated with bunting and ceremonial banners along parts of the route and there will be live entertainment, the palace said.

The couple will travel through the town in a carriage before arriving at St George's Chapel for the ceremony, to which 600 guests have been invited.

"After the service has concluded, the newly-married couple will proceed out of the church and acknowledge the 200 representatives of Prince Harry's charities gathered in the Cloister.

"The couple are delighted that these people, who will be such an important part of their official work in the years to come, will be the first people they see after their wedding," the palace statement said.

The final aspect of the wedding open to the public and live television coverage will be the new bride and groom departing Windsor Castle for the evening reception at nearby Frogmore House, located within the grounds of the Home Park in the town of Windsor.&nbsp

Meghan Markle's father to walk her down the aisle at royal wedding

Actress Meghan Markle and Prince Harry will tie the knot on May 19 and believe it or not, the guests to the royal wedding will not be treated with any grand gastronomic spread; the invitees have been asked to get their own food.

The idea is to let everyone get their own tidbits and share food to achieve a picnic-like scenario which will be personal and family-like.

However, there will be light refreshments and snacks on offer from the royal side.

According to reports, over 600 people have been invited to Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel for what is been touted as the biggest wedding of the year.

Meanwhile, reports inform that decades-old slices of cake from British royal weddings - including those of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and Prince William and Kate Middleton - will go up for auction.

The five cake slices from royal weddings are expected to fetch hundreds and perhaps thousands of dollars each next month as memorabilia at the sale in Las Vegas, Julien's Auctions said.

"These come from people who attended the wedding and kept them in the freezer the entire time," Julien said of all the cake slices, adding they have not been preserved by other means.

Guests to get their own food at Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's wedding

As Prince Harry's wedding to Meghan Markle inches closer, public hunger for all things royal will get its dessert as decades-old slices of cake from British royal weddings - including those of Prince Charles and Princess Diana, and Prince William and Kate Middleton - go up for auction.

The five cake slices from royal weddings are expected to fetch hundreds and perhaps thousands of dollars each next month as memorabilia at the sale in Las Vegas, Julien's Auctions said.

But for those looking to play royal taster, there is a word of caution.

"They're not edible," Darren Julien, the Los Angeles-based auction house's chief executive, said ahead of the June 23 sale.

A slice from Charles and Diana's wedding, presented in a white box with "CD Buckingham Palace 29th July 1981" in silver printing and wrapped in a paper doily, is estimated to fetch $800-$1,200, the auction house said.

"These come from people who attended the wedding and kept them in the freezer the entire time," Julien said of all the cake slices, adding they have not been preserved by other means.

More than 600 guests have been invited to Harry and Meghan's May 19 wedding, which will take place at Windsor Castle's St. George's Chapel, with a further 200 being invited for the reception.

The fruitcake made for Prince William and Kate Middleton's 2011 wedding comes in a tin presented to guests with an enclosure card saluting attendees that said: "With best wishes from TRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in celebration of the wedding of TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge."

It is pegged to sell for $600-$800. Julien's sold a slice of William and Kate's cake for $7,500 in 2014.

Other cake slices include Charles' 2005 wedding to Camilla Parker Bowles and Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson's 1986 nuptials, which each is estimated to fetch $600-$800.

The piece of royal cake from Princess Anne's 1973 marriage to her first husband, Captain Mark Philips, is expected to sell for $300-$500.

"It's kind of hard to throw something out that has been given to you by the royals," Julien said.

British royal wedding cake slices to be sold

Before US&nbspactress Meghan Markle becomes a British citizen after marrying Queen Elizabeth's grandson Prince Harry, she'll have to learn who opened Britain's first Indian restaurant, the size of the Lake District and the age of "Big Ben".

The details are potential questions would-be Britons face when they take a "Life in the UK" test, which all applicants must pass before becoming British citizens, answering a minimum of 18 out of 24 questions correctly.

Despite marrying into the royal family on May 19, Markle, 36, will herself have to successfully navigate the test and demonstrate sufficient knowledge of historical facts and some obscure British trivia, such as the height of the London Eye ferris wheel.

However, many of the questions - of which there almost 3,000 - are alien to those born and raised in Britain.

"How difficult are them questions?! They're too difficult," said 46-year-old chef Tony Poston, who was shell-shocked after he failed a practice test with a result of 58 percent.

"I did history at school but some of them are just absolutely stupid," he said, with his mouth wide open in astonishment.

Another Briton, Jenny Tate, a 53-year-old practice manager from London, was almost hysterical after she failed the test.

"I'm so sorry about that. That's shocking. That's actually quite hard," she said.

Not all the questions require an acute knowledge of history dating back centuries or knowing the height and age of well-known landmarks.

There are some questions about modern-day British life - you need to know that a general election is held every five years, and that it's illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to buy tobacco, amongst others.

But the test has come under fire by politicians and academic critics who say it serves no purpose, and that the majority of questions are absurd.

"It's gone from being something about practical trivia, to the purely trivial," said Professor Thom Brooks, 44-year-old Dean of Law at Durham University.

Brooks, originally from New England in the United States, is personally familiar with the test, having sat the quiz in 2009 ahead of becoming a UK citizen two years later.

He said it was irrelevant to British everyday life and the government had changed it in 2013 to remove useful information such as registering with a doctor and how to report a crime. One applicant, he said, had failed it more than 60 times.

Last month, a report by Britain's House of Lords committee on citizenship agreed with Brooks and said the government should carry out a comprehensive review.

"You've got stuff in the handbook anyway, about how tall is the London Eye? How big is the Lake District? And who set up the first curry house, what was it called, and what street was it on? Do facts like this, are these required to becoming British, or to integrating?" Brooks asked.

"It's a British citizenship test that very few British citizens can pass."

The London Eye is 443 feet (135 metres) tall, the Lake District covers 885 square miles (2,292 kilometres), Big Ben's clock is over 150 years old, and Sake Dean Mahomed set up the first Indian restaurant in London in 1810. The Hindoostane Coffee House no longer exists, but a plaque commemorating Mahomed - who died in 1851 - is there in its place.

A random survey carried out by Reuters found that out of 41 Britons, only 23 could answer questions they were shown correctly.

The 50-pound ($69) citizenship test is one of the hurdles Markle faces as she gives up her US&nbspnationality to become British.

The complicated process, which Britain has made harder in recent years in an attempt to cut net immigration rates to less than 100,000 a year, requires Markle to have lived in Britain for three years, to have good knowledge of English and to be of sound mind.

The requirement of earning a combined income of at least 18,600 pounds should not prove to be too burdensome for a prince of the realm and his new wife, however.

For many applicants though, the citizenship test is a major stumbling block. The most recent official figures showed that 133,490 tests were taken in 2016 with 47,312 failures.

Despite her new royal status, Markle will not be exempt for learning how many lawmakers sit in the Scottish Parliament or when Mahomed, who opened Britain's first curry house, was born.

"She really will have to do the test so it won't be any wave of the hand of her majesty that will change it," Brooks said.

Alanna Varshney moved to London from California in 2009. She passed the citizenship test in February of this year after vigorous preparation - online practice exams, studying the guidebook, making flashcards and quizzing her British husband.

She thinks most Brits would be "stumped" by the facts and figures that she had to learn, but got lucky with one particular question during her exam.

"My favourite was about which colony in 1776 declared its independence from the United Kingdom," said the 38-year-old who works in marketing, recalling the moment she burst into laughter and got a funny look from the adjucator during the exam.

"If I hadn't got that one right I would have felt really ashamed."

Although Varshney succeeded, some of the Britons quizzed by Reuters thought Markle might fare better than they had.

"She's a bright girl, she might get half!" grinned retired engineer David Armstrong, 58, after himself failing multiple answers.

Kerry Washington, meanwhile, gushed over Lopez. “[She’s] an iconic performer … But she’s also a mother, an entrepreneur, an activist, a designer, a beauty icon, a philanthropist and a producer,” wrote the Scandal star. “She is an undeniable force and powerful example.”

Elsewhere in the issue, Taraji P. Henson had kind words for Cardi B. “She’s clear on her talent and she’s not trying to get in anybody else’s lane. She recorded ‘Bodak Yellow’ because it’s what she loved. Now she’s the biggest thing in music,” Henson exclaimed. “And even with all those eyeballs watching, she’s still unapologetically herself. Cardi B’s here to stay baby, and I’m happy to be a witness.”

Princess Diana would approve of her son Prince Harry's marriage to U.S. actress Meghan Markle, according to author Andrew Morton whose famous biography of the late royal caused an uproar in Britain some 25 years ago. Like Diana's union to heir-to-the-throne Prince Charles in 1981, Markle and Harry's wedding next month has captivated the world`s media and drawn inevitable comparisons between the two.

And there are indeed many similarities, said Andrew Morton whose explosive book about Diana in 1992 first blew apart the myth of a fairytale marriage and who has now penned "Meghan: A Hollywood Princess", a biography of the new royal-to-be.

"Diana died at 36, Meghan comes into the scene at 36. In a way she's picked up Diana's baton - she's both elegant, she's glamorous and also she's a humanitarian," he told Reuters. "So Diana would have very much have approved of Meghan and seen that kind of working of fate almost."

Morton`s biography of Diana was an international best-seller, revealing her union with Prince Charles was broken beyond repair and that she had suffered eating disorders and been driven to suicide attempts by the misery of her life with Charles. After her death in a Paris car crash in 1997, Morton revealed she had been his prime source and had smuggled tape recordings out of the palace to him.

In his latest book about Markle, which he describes as a snapshot, said a fuller picture would probably emerge in 10 years time, he has had to rely on those who knew her growing up in California where he conveniently has a home, some family members and colleagues as well as people who work at the palace. "I still have my ins there," he said.

Extracts from the book include how Ninaki Priddy, a childhood friend of Markle said the actress had been fascinated by the royal family. "She wants to be Princess Diana 2.0," Priddy is quoted as saying. It`s not a description Morton shares.

"Her friend was rather exaggerating," he said. "I think Meghan wants to be Meghan 1.0, that is to say, known for being Meghan not for being in the shadow of somebody else. "That is not to say she was unaware of Harry's mother, who was described as the world's most photographed woman before her death.

"She certainly knew about Diana, she watched the funeral, she was very affected by it, she and her friends collected toys to give to needy children in response," Morton said.

In a TV interview given after their engagement was announced last November, Harry said Markle and his mother would have been best friends and as "thick as thieves", disclosing that the ring he gave his fiancee and which he designed contained diamonds from jewellery once owned by Diana.

HALO RELATIVELY INTACT
Extracts from Morton's book published in the media have given the impression of Markle as a social climber who has turned her back on friends and even on her first husband in a quest for fame and success, even sending her wedding ring back in the mail.

"Some people have fallen out with her, some people adore her," said Morton, who has also penned biographies of actor Tom Cruise, singer Madonna and Monica Lewinsky, The White House intern whose affair with Bill Clinton almost toppled the U.S. president.

"As people who`ve read the book say, she`s emerged with her halo relatively intact."

Whereas Diana famously found adapting to royal life incredibly difficult, Morton thinks Markle will find the change much simpler. Being photographed on red carpets had prepared her for the royal walkabouts and meeting the public. "I think the royal family has changed. I think the impact of Diana has been to make the royal family more accessible both inside and outside Buckingham Palace," he said.

"Here is a woman who is camera-ready, not camera-shy, a woman who is very confident who is very assertive, who took control of the engagement interview for example. "However, he suggests some royal protocol will be hard to get used to.

"This is a girl who was a gender equality advocate for the United Nations having to bow and courtesy to the queen and even Kate Middleton (wife of Harry's elder brother William) in private occasions," he said.

"I think Meghan will cope but she will find some of the flummery difficult to bear."

Princess Diana would have approved of her son Prince Harry's marriage to Meghan Markle

One of soon-to-be royal Meghan Markle`s family member is not happy with her, as the Suits star has allegedly not invited the relative concerned and her family for the May 19 wedding.

The actor`s estranged half-sister, Samantha Grant, has filed a complaint against Markle, claiming that the latter has ignored the family for her May 19 wedding to Prince Harry, according to the Fox News.

"At issue is not a matter of closeness as more than 1000 complete strangers are invited. A family is a family," Grant tweeted on Wednesday. "I have an uncle I have only seen once but I would never say he is not family because we are not close.

"Humanitarians move forward with love and kindness especially to Family." Grant also claimed that she and Markle are 15th cousins with Harry." And it`s not only Meg who is a 15th cousin to Harry. My brother and I are also. I was the first born Markle to my father. Exclude the [Markles] from this wedding would be highly inappropriate," Grant tweeted on Thursday.

Along with the tweet, she also posted a family tree, which she claimed was of Markles, to prove that they are related to the royal family. Meanwhile, the 36-year-old is busy with her wedding preparations and soon she may permanently move into Nottingham Cottage at Kensington Palace along with Prince Harry. However, when she was just a star, Markle had been visiting London to promote her legal drama series.

She would often stay at Grosvenor House apartments in Mayfair and called it her favorite property. "I can give you the most honest answer it`s my favorite property I`ve ever stayed at," Meghan had said in an interview with Jumeirah magazine in 2015.

"I`m very fortunate that I have the luxury of staying at so many amazing places, but the service, and being able to stay somewhere where it feels like home, where every need is anticipated, it`s all fantastic. I really love it here and I`m happy to be staying. I`m even happy that I don`t have to fib.

"The service apartments by Jumeirah Living are located on Park Lane in Mayfair. There are 130 residences within the building, including four London Suites and four Penthouse Suites.Apart from 24-hour room service, the guests can also avail in-residence spa and beauty services. They can also exercise at the fitness center and enjoy food at the restaurant, The Atrium, so it`s no wonder Meghan was such a fan.

Why is Meghan Markle's sister upset with her?

U.S. President Donald Trump, his predecessor Barack Obama and British Prime Minister Theresa May have not been invited to the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on May 19, royal and British government sources said on Tuesday.
Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth and younger brother of Prince William, will marry Markle, an American actress best known for her role in the TV series "Suits", at St George`s Chapel in Windsor Castle.

"It has been decided that an official list of political leaders – both UK and international - is not required for Prince Harry and Ms. Markle`s wedding," said a spokesman for Kensington Palace, the official residence of William and Harry.

"Her Majesty`s Government was consulted on this decision, which was taken by The Royal Household," the spokesman said. "Her Majesty`s Government" is the official name of the British government.

A Kensington Palace source confirmed the Obamas would not be attending and said the wedding guests would be people who have an existing direct relationship with the groom or the bride or with both. That excludes Trump.

There had been some speculation that the Obamas might be invited due to the personal rapport between the former president and Harry, but it would have been diplomatically awkward to invite the Obamas and not the Trumps.

Although the royal family is expected to steer well clear of politics, Britain`s delicate constitutional balance means that its members have to consult discreetly with the government to ensure their public actions comply with foreign policy.

A British government source confirmed May would not be attending and said there had been no expectation that she would.

The government source noted that the wedding venue was significantly smaller than Westminster Abbey, where Harry`s older brother William wed Kate Middleton in 2011 in the presence of then Prime Minister David Cameron and other politicians and diplomats.

Obama, who was then in office, was not invited to that wedding and the United States was represented by its ambassador to the United Kingdom.

Kensington Palace on Tuesday named some of the 1,200 people, chosen because of their strong leadership and community service, who have been invited into the grounds of Windsor Castle on the wedding day to join the celebrations.

The list included people who ran a wide variety of charity organisations as well as veterans from the armed forces who have suffered life-changing injuries.

Trumps, Obamas not invited to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding

Britain's Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have chosen a charity working for women in Mumbai's slums among a handful of organisations unveiled on Monday that will become recipients of donations in place of gifts for their royal wedding next month.

Myna Mahila Foundation is among seven charities hand-picked by the couple as they announced that anyone who might wish to mark their wedding day on May 19 should consider making a donation to one of the charities, rather than sending a wedding gift.

The foundation, which aims to offer Mumbai women stable employment close to their homes as well as breaking taboos around menstrual hygiene by offering them access to low-cost sanitary napkins, was chosen by Markle after she saw its work "first-hand" during a visit to India last year, Kensington Palace said.

"Myna Mahila Foundation is delighted to be a part of this special occasion for Ms Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. This support will enable us to expand our reach into more urban slums in Mumbai, empowering local women through access to menstrual hygiene products and employment opportunities," said Suhani Jalota, who founded the charity in 2015.

The foundation works as a "trusted network" in Mumbai's urban slums, empowering its staff through training in women's health, English, Maths, and life skills such as self-defence.

The sanitary products are manufactured and distributed by women from these communities as part of wider professional and personal support to help them "grow as individuals and businesswomen".

Markle had written about the charity in 'Time' magazine after her visit to Mumbai in March, 2017.

"During my time in the slum communities outside of Mumbai, I shadowed women who are part of a microfinance system where they manufacture sanitary napkins and sell them within the community," the American actress wrote.

"The namesake of the organisation, Myna Mahila Foundation, refers to a chatty bird ('Myna') and 'Mahila' meaning woman. The name echoes the undercurrent of this issue: we need to speak about it, to be 'chatty' about it," she said.

Kensington Palace said Harry and Markle do not have any formal relationships with the charities chosen.

"The couple have chosen charities which represent a range of issues that they are passionate about, including sport for social change, women's empowerment, conservation, the environment, homelessness, HIV and the armed forces. Many of these are small charities, and the couple are pleased to be able to amplify and shine a light on their work," the palace statement said.

The other charities chosen include the Children's HIV Association (CHIVA), which supports children growing up with HIV and their families across the UK and Ireland, Crisis - the UK's national charity for homeless people, Scotty's Little Soldiers - a charity for bereaved Armed Forces children, StreetGames, which uses sport to change lives across Britain, Surfers Against Sewage - a UK-based marine conservation and campaigning charity, and the Wilderness Foundation UK, which promotes the benefits and enjoyment of wild nature.

"Prince Harry and Ms Meghan Markle are incredibly grateful for the goodwill shown to them since the announcement of their engagement and are keen that as many people as possible benefit from this generosity of spirit. The couple have therefore asked that anyone who might wish to mark the occasion considers making a donation to charity, rather than sending a wedding gift," the palace statement said.

Harry, 33, fifth-in-line to the British throne, and Markle, 36, are set to get married in a ceremony at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on May 19.

They had earlier revealed that their wedding flowers will also be given to different charities after the occasion.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle love story to be made into a TV movie

The leader of the anti-immigration UK Independence Party announced today he had ended his relationship after his girlfriend reportedly made racist remarks about Prince Harry's fiancee Meghan Markle.

Henry Bolton said he ended his brief liaison with 25- year-old Jo Marney after the Mail on Sunday newspaper published what he described as "appalling and insulting" text messages she reportedly sent.

"I don't defend these comments whatsoever... As of last night, the romantic side of our relationship is ended," he told ITV television.

Bolton, who took up the UKIP leadership in September, said Marney had been suspended from the party.

He is under pressure to resign over his liaison.

According to the Mail on Sunday, she wrote messages to a friend complaining that Markle -- an American actress of mixed race who is due to marry Harry in May -- would "taint our royal family" with her "seed".

"Next will be a Muslim PM (prime minister). And a black king," she was reported to have written.

In a statement, Marney said her remarks were "deliberately exaggerated to make a point" and were taken out of context, but "I fully recognise the offence they have caused".

Bolton had already made headlines this month over his decision to end his marriage and start dating Marney.

He has resisted widespread calls to resign as UKIP's third elected leader since Nigel Farage stepped down in the wake of Britain's 2016 vote to leave the European Union.

The party has struggled to find a role since the Brexit referendum and has been beset by infighting.
