Meghan Markle, the wife of Britain's Prince Harry, announced on Thursday she would become the patron of four organisations to champion causes close to her heart, including the National Theatre and charities supporting women and animal welfare. 
 
Queen Elizabeth, 92, has passed on her patronages of the National Theatre and the Association of Commonwealth Universities, which she has held for decades, to Meghan, who married the queen's grandson last year. 
 
Known as the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan will also become the patron of Smart Works, a charity helping long-term unemployed women, and animal welfare charity Mayhew.

"The Duchess is delighted to become Patron of both national and grassroots organisations that are part of the fabric of the UK, and is very much looking forward to working with them to bring wider public attention to their causes," Kensington Palace said in a statement. 
 
The National Theatre said it was a privilege to welcome Meghan, an American former actress who starred in television drama Suits before she married Harry. 
 
"The Duchess shares our deeply-held conviction that theatre has the power to bring together people from all communities and walks of life. I very much look forward to working closely with Her Royal Highness in the years to come," Rufus Norris, the director of the National Theatre, said.

As Britain`s heir apparent, Charles has waited longer than any of his predecessors to become monarch and would be the oldest king in a lineage that dates back 1,000 years.&nbsp;

Charles has used his position to campaign on issues including climate change, architecture and farming, often raising prescient concerns about the environment, his supporters say.&nbsp;

"When my mama succeeded and became queen and my grandfather died so young, aged 57, I ended up becoming heir to the throne aged four," Charles said in a BBC documentary aired last week.

"You have to make of it what you feel is right - there`s nothing laid down so that`s what makes it so interesting, challenging and of course complicated."

However, critics have accused him of inappropriate interfering because British monarchs are bound by Britain`s unwritten constitution to stay out of politics.&nbsp;

In last week`s documentary, Charles said he would stop "meddling" in campaigns which he felt strongly about.&nbsp;

"I`m not that stupid," he said. "I do realise that it is a separate exercise being sovereign."&nbsp;

In the BBC film, William said he hoped his hard-working father would spend more time with his grandchildren.

"Now he`s reached his 70th year, it`s a perfect time to consolidate a little bit as most families would do; you are worried about having them around, making sure their health`s OK," he said. "He`s the fittest man I know but equally I want him to be fit so he`s 95 going on, so having more time with him at home would be lovely."

However, William acknowledged that Charles still believed he had much to achieve.

"He hasn`t even reached the point that his natural progression should do - ie being monarch - so he`s still got his job to do," he said.

A research fellow at Downing College, Cambridge, the 29-year-old sits at the cutting edge of Alzheimer's research, and has been praised for her ground-breaking work building a 'library' of drug-like molecules to target irregular proteins that cause degenerative brain diseases," notes the citation on the young biochemist.

"With dementia now the leading cause of death for women in England and Wales, her early breakthroughs and research could not be more vital," it adds in reference to Joshi, who completed her MSc in Biotechnology from University of Pune before moving to the UK.

Crowds of well-wishers cheered Britain`s Prince Harry as he made an impromptu walkabout on Friday outside the ancient walls of Windsor Castle on the eve of his wedding to U.S. actress Meghan Markle.&nbsp;

Queen Elizabeth`s grandson was joined by Prince William, his elder brother, and best man, as he mingled with excited fans waving red, white and blue Union flags less than 24 hours before Saturday`s lavish ceremony.

One fan handed the prince a teddy bear during the 10-minute excursion before the brothers waved to the royal fans chanting "We want Harry!" and returned to the castle. They were due to spend the night in a luxury hotel nearby.

"I`m gobsmacked. He was so lovely. I can`t get over he shook our hands," said Thelma Speed, 89.&nbsp;

Her daughter Deborah Goodes, 60, who named one of her sons after the prince, was equally smitten.

"I’ve seen him on the television, but in the flesh, he looked really great," she said. "I can see why she’s marrying him."

The walkabout in open-necked shirts came as the last touches were put in place for the royal extravaganza at the castle, to the west of London and home to monarchs for almost 1,000 years.

Harry, 33, will marry Markle, 36, a star of the TV drama "Suits", in the castle`s 15th-century St George`s Chapel at a ceremony that begins at 1100 GMT.

CHARLES TO TAKE FATHER`S PLACE

Harry`s office announced that his father Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, would walk Markle down the aisle in place of her father.

Thomas Markle, pulled out days before the event, telling the celebrity website TMZ he was recovering from heart surgery, in a family drama that played out in the glare of media attention.

Buckingham Palace said Markle`s African-American mother, Doria Ragland, had met the 92-year-old queen and her husband Prince Philip, 96 on Friday. It also confirmed that Philip, who had hip replacement surgery last month, would be at the wedding.

Markle and her mother, a yoga instructor who a royal source said had charmed Prince Charles when they met during the week, arrived at a luxury hotel near Windsor where they were to spend the night before the wedding. Markle said she felt "wonderful".

The well-wishers mingling with journalists and armed police were taking in the emotion as well as the pomp.

"Every daughter should have their dad but obviously he`s not very well. I do feel sorry for her. It must be heartbreaking for her," said Moira Moss, who was camping outside the castle.&nbsp;

A former army officer and one-time royal wild child, Harry met Markle in July 2016 on a blind date set up through a mutual friend. Markle said she had known little about him while Harry said he had never heard of Markle or watched her TV series. 
After just two dates, he whisked her off to Botswana for a holiday, camping under the stars.

Markle`s wedding cake - a lemon and elderflower creation with buttercream icing - took six bakers five days to prepare, according to its designer Claire Ptak.

Police were expecting more than 100,000 people to throng the streets outside the castle - the queen`s home and the oldest and largest inhabited fortress in the world.

Harry, the younger son of the late Princess Diana, has always been a popular member of the royal family.&nbsp;

At just 12 years old, he walked behind his mother`s coffin as her funeral cortege made its way through London after her death in a car crash in 1997.

He has spoken publicly about the pain of that loss, supported the cause of wounded veterans, and embraced campaigns for awareness about mental health.&nbsp;

She was referring to Prince Harry and his older brother Prince William, who both had military careers before dedicating themselves full-time to royal duties. Roberts was one of the organizers of a royal wedding party due to take place at the Falkland Islands Defence Force headquarters, where children were expected to dress up as princes and princesses and receive special gifts. Betts, however, intended to spend the day at home in front of the television so she could give her full attention to events in faraway Windsor. "I think some people are having a party but I would not want that. I like to be able to take it all in without being disturbed," she said. The Falklands were just one of the locations many worlds away from Windsor Castle where people were celebrating the royal nuptials. In India, a group of Mumbai`s famed dabbawalas, or lunch delivery men, chose a traditional sari dress and kurta jacket as wedding gifts for Harry and his bride, while at the Gurukul School of Art children painted posters of the royal couple and Queen Elizabeth. In Australia, where the British monarch remains the head of state, some pubs were planning wedding parties, while a cinema chain was screening the event live across its network. Viewers were encouraged to come dressed in fun finery, with prizes for the most creative outfits. In Melbourne, fashion designer Nadia Foti was planning to attend an "English high tea" where guests would wear plastic crowns and enjoy traditional British treats such as scones and the popular summer drink Pimm`s. "It`s exciting for the fashion and the spectacular," said Foti. "It`s a joyous occasion and I`ve made a plum cake to celebrate in the classic English style."
