American television host Ellen DeGeneres stepped out in support of royal couple Prince Harry and Meghan Markle who have been under fire lately for their decision to use a private jet to get to their vacation destination. Degeneres' reaction comes after singer Elton John blasted British media for unnecessarily scrutinising the royal couple.&nbsp;

Soon after the news broke out of their getaway to Nice, France, with their son Archie, headlines focused on their use of the private aircraft, as some claimed that it seemed to contradict their move on protecting the environment.

On Monday, DeGeneres weighed in on the matter and argued a message on Twitter saying the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were undeserving of the criticism. The host also noted that how after meeting the couple in England with her wife Portia de Rossi, she was impressed by their behaviour and their "down-to-earth and compassionate" nature.

"Portia and I met Prince Harry and Meghan in England to talk about their work on wildlife conservation," DeGeneres tweeted. "They were the most down-to-earth, compassionate people."

"Imagine being attacked for everything you do, when all you`re trying to do is make the world better," she added, alongside a photo of the smiling couple.

After a whirlwind exit from the royal family, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s story has become a point of interest for Netflix.&nbsp;

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos expressed interest in working with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle on their story of exit from the British royal family, something that hogged headlines larger part of this month ever since the two made this shocking announcement.

At an event in Los Angeles, when Sarandos was asked if Netflix would be interested in working the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, he said, "Who wouldn’t be interested? Yes, sure."

According to industry insiders, the couple could follow in the footsteps of Barack and Michelle Obama and strike a deal with Netflix. Interestingly, soon after the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/megxit-prince-harry-meghan-markle-to-no-longer-bear-royal-highness-title-275149">news of Megxit </a>came out, it was revealed that Meghan Markle has signed a voiceover deal with Disney in return for a donation to an elephant charity.

For the unversed, both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will not use their “royal highness” title and have taken a step back from their royal duties as they aim to become financially independent and will divide time between North America and the UK -- meaning they spend more time in America than Britain.

On another note, actress Helena Bonham Carter wished&nbsp;Meghan Markle good luck post royal exit. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/reel-queen-to-real-queen-helena-bonham-carter-wishes-meghan-markle-good-luck-post-royal-exit-275708">Read about it here.&nbsp;</a>

Netflix interested in Meghan Markle, Prince Harry's story of royal exit

They may have left Britain and royal duties to live a private life in Canada, but Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have not been able to shrug off the prying media off their back even in a new country.&nbsp;

The couple started their new life in Canada on Tuesday but on the first day itself their lawyers had to issue a warning to media over the recent photographs of Meghan Markle.&nbsp;

The Duchess was photographed while taking a stroll with the couple's son Prince Archie and their two dogs. Two bodyguards were seen accompanying Meghan.&nbsp;

In Britain, the pictures were used by The Sun and the Daily Mail newspapers.

Following their <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/prince-harry-meghan-markle-quit-royal-front-line-in-shock-move-273083">shock exit from life as working royals</a>, Harry jetted out from Britain to join Meghan late Monday at a luxury house outside Victoria on Vancouver Island.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have temporarily set up base at the wooded home, having spent six weeks there over Christmas with their baby son Archie.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/british-royals-being-victim-of-media-invasion-275866">In pics:&nbsp;5 times members of the British royal family got into legal feuds with the media</a>

Their shocking announcement on January 8 that they wished to step back from their royal duties rocked the monarchy.

The couple, who married in May 2018, admitted last year that they were struggling with media scrutiny and have regularly hit out at the press in statements and in the courts.

On Tuesday, lawyers claimed the images were taken by photographers hiding in bushes and spying on the US former television actress, the BBC reported, and that she did not consent to the photos. The couple were prepared to take legal action, according to the BBC.

The lawyers claim there had been attempts to photograph inside their new home using long lenses, and say paparazzi are camped outside the property.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/megxit-prince-harry-meghan-markle-to-no-longer-bear-royal-highness-title-275149">Megxit: Prince Harry, Meghan Markle to no longer bear 'royal highness' title</a>

A freelance photojournalist working in the area, who said he was from California but wanted to remain anonymous, said the potential legal issues are "kind of tough," but that he does not let them affect his work.&nbsp;

"Canada has freedom of the press laws," he said, sitting in the driver's seat of a white SUV with his photography gear on the passenger's side.

"From what I understand, as long as you are not following them, harassing them, breaking the law, as long as it’s a matter of public interest -- and the monarchy always is -- then the press is free to cover it."

- 'No other option' -

Harry, 35, and 38-year-old Meghan are bowing out entirely from representing the monarchy, in a crisis that has shaken the centuries-old institution.

Harry said Sunday that they did not want to quit their royal duties but <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/we-had-no-other-option-than-to-step-back-as-royals-prince-harry-275343">reluctantly accepted there was "no other option"</a> if they wanted to cut loose from public funding and seek their own income in pursuit of a more independent life.

Under their new arrangement, the Sussexes are free to earn their own commercial income -- though at a greater cost than they first envisaged.

They can no longer represent Harry's grandmother Queen Elizabeth II or be referred to as their royal highnesses, and must repay taxpayers' money spent on their UK home.

They will no longer receive public money -- though 95 percent of their annual funding comes from his father Prince Charles, via the heir to the throne's hereditary land and property estate.

To what extent that will continue, and who will cover their security bill -- currently met by the British police -- remains to be seen.

- Questions over funding -

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Tuesday denied having spoken "directly" with Queen Elizabeth about the security costs, after British media reports that the country had offered to foot the bill.&nbsp;

"Discussions continue to be ongoing and I have no updates at this moment," Trudeau told a news conference.

Canadian media have estimated the cost of protecting the couple and their eight-month-old son Archie at about Can$1.7 million (US$1.3 million) a year. Other estimates run higher.

Britain's Justice Secretary Robert Buckland said there must be a "line of delineation" over who pays the security costs.

Asked whether British taxpayers should fund the Sussexes while they are in Canada, he told Sky News television: "I don't have an easy answer to that."

The couple intend to raise their own income streams. They have launched their new Sussex Royal website and trademarked the name.

However, the queen's senior advisor on heraldry suggested they should not be allowed to use the royal moniker, having relinquished their public duties.

"I don't think it's satisfactory. One cannot be two things at once. You either are (royal) or you're not," Thomas Woodcock, the Garter King of Arms, told The Times newspaper.

In a role that dates back to the 15th century, he is involved in making sure that royal symbols are not used illegitimately for commercial purposes.

Woodcock, who was giving his personal opinion, said the final decision would rest with the sovereign.

- 'Leave them in peace' -

Like Britain, Canada is a Commonwealth realm, meaning Queen Elizabeth is the head of state.

Residents walking dogs on a path near the Sussexes' new home told AFP that they opposed intrusion into their new Canadian set-up, and were proud of the local instinct to give them space.

"We don't like it. Leave them in peace," said Anne Girling, adding she had met Meghan jogging on a trail nearby and they wished one another "good morning."

Sue Starkey, another dog walker, described the area as a "really friendly" community.&nbsp;"Our neighborhood has been so respectful and giving them space," she said.&nbsp;"I'm really happy they're here and I hope they can find some peace."

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle's lawyers warn media as the couple start new life in Canada

Remember in December 2017 when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry announced their engagement? The images of Harry in a blue trouser suit and Meghan in white coat flashed across TV screens and newspapers all over the world. Meghan was wearing the coat created by a Canadian brand Line - The Label, sold out within minutes. So much so that the brand’s website crashed. The interest in the royal couple has been unprecedented. When they got married in May 2018, two billion viewers glued to their TV screens to watch the ‘fairy-tale’ wedding worldwide.

So, it wasn’t a surprise when @SussexRoyal broke Instagram records for the fastest one million followers (in less than six hours) in April last year. From their son Archie’s arrival to the bombshell decision to step back from royal duties – all announcements were made through this social handle. But what next?

The big question after Megxit is that with literally no cash flow from the royal chambers, how would the royal couple or should we say the celebrity couple will eke a living?

Brand partnerships, sponsorship deals, and social media appear to be the most lucrative and quick source of income for the couple. Global brands are ready to queue outside their Vancouver pad to get them on board. No doubt they can give any global celebrity a run for their money. Not to forget, before stepping into the royal shoes Meghan was also running her fashion and lifestyle blog - The Tig. The blog was discontinued and Meghan bid adieu to her fans with a sweet thank you letter. So, the social media influencer role is open for both. From AIDS to mental health to fashion and sport their ideas will sell like hot cake. And, the new parents also have all the rights and some experience to talk about parenting and bringing up a global citizen.

But what remains to be seen is for how long this love and affection for them would stay now that the royal titles have left their sides. The royal couple can also tread the road Obamas have opted for. Former US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle launched their production company Higher Ground in May 2018 and signed a multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix. Their first production American Factory has even got an Oscar nod. When Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandon was asked if he would be interested in signing a deal with Harry and Meghan he quickly jumped on to so ‘who wouldn’t be’. Meghan sent ripples across showbiz when she signed a voice-over deal with Disney hinting at her comeback.

Imagine what if Meghan plans to write a book like the Obamas. Obama's memoir is expected to release this year before the 2020 Presidential elections. Michelle’s autobiography Becoming took the world by storm. The book sold 1.4 million copies in its first week. It became the best-selling book in the US for the year 2018.

Who wouldn’t want to get a sneak peek into how a biracial American divorcee managed to strut through the alleys of Buckingham Palace and got a nod from the Queen to marry her grandson. Or, how it feels to be a spare’s spouse and not an heir’s. Or, how rooted racism is into Britain’s psyche?

Obama made his first speech three-months after the end of his second term. He reportedly made $400,000 from that one speech. Harry, are you listening? So the possibilities for both of them are endless to cash in their celebrity status. So, the possibilities for both of them are endless to cash in their celebrity status.

The bold step taken by the couple has indeed shaken the monarchy and has exposed its weaknesses to the world yet again. Stepping down from the roles of senior royals seems a good idea and Harry is anyways sixth in the line of the throne but the decision to relocate to Canada only hints that the couple wants more liberty in executing their plans as a brand.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are so happy to share the joy of this day with members of the public who have been incredibly supportive since the birth of their son. They thank you for your kindness in welcoming their first born and celebrating this special moment. Their Royal Highnesses feel fortunate to have enjoyed this day with family and the godparents of Archie. Their son, Archie, was baptised wearing the handmade replica of the royal christening gown which has been worn by royal infants for the last 11 years. The original Royal Christening Robe, made of fine Honiton lace lined with white satin, was commissioned by Queen Victoria in 1841 and first worn by her eldest daughter. It was subsequently worn for generations of Royal christenings, including The Queen, her children and her grandchildren until 2004, when The Queen commissioned this handmade replica, in order for the fragile historic outfit to be preserved, and for the tradition to continue. Nearly 6 months after Prince Archie was christened, the names of his godparents have been revealed. Prince Harry's former nanny Tiggy Pettifer and his mentor Mark Dyer were given the titles for the youngest royal. Both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle had decided to not reveal the names of their son's od parents at the time of the christening in July 2019. Back then, the Buckingham Palace had released a statement saying the names of the baby's godparents "will remain private". Now in a recent report by the Sunday Times, the two names have been revealed. Reports state that former nanny Tiggy Pettifer has remained close to the boys since Princess Diana's death. Prince Harry was 12 back then. View this post on Instagram This morning, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was christened in the Private Chapel at Windsor Castle at an intimate service officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. Megxit: Prince Harry, Meghan Markle to no longer bear 'royal highness' title

By Laura Clancy

After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced on their website and Instagram that they are going to “step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent”, there was an explosion of interest on social media and the news. Everyone is asking what “financial independence” means, how this semi-separation will affect the monarchy, and whether the decision was affected by racist and sexist abuse against Markle.

Then there is media relations. The couple have said they will adapt their media approach for more “diverse and open access to their work”. This includes working with grassroots media organisations and more “credible” media outlets.

They will also be using “official communication channels” (the website and Instagram) to engage the public “directly”. Most notably, they will “no longer participate in the royal rota system” that determines which journalists can cover royal events in person – mostly royal correspondents from particular UK media outlets including the Daily Mail, The Times and The Sun. It all amounts to a clear attempt to take more control over how they are portrayed by the media – though they are arguably underestimating what is already in place.

No more priority access

The royal family need the media to function. They need to share their initiatives, patronages and philanthropic projects to appear to be “doing good”. This is, as I argue in my forthcoming book, a key mechanism through which to produce public consent for the monarchy.

They know this. Despite serious recent missteps – Prince Andrew’s disastrous Newsnight interview, for example – the monarchy run a very sophisticated PR programme. There is a constant battle over visibility: the monarchy must retain some semblance of fairytale and superiority (of being “above” politics, for example), or it risks being exposed as an institution invested in maintaining wealth and power at any cost. Therefore, visibility has to be tightly stage-managed. As political constitutionalist Walter Bagehot famously wrote: “We must not let in daylight upon magic”.

The royal rota system essentially means that the monarchy has control over who covers their events, what access they get, and who they speak to. Royal correspondent for the Daily Express Richard Palmer has tweeted about how rota journalists are stationed so far away from the royals it becomes impossible to document what happens. This, he says, inevitably leads to a series of identical stories about “good work” or royal women’s clothing.

Media coverage of royal tours works similarly. A team of correspondents have their itinerary organised by Buckingham Palace. This model reflects the “embedded journalism” agreement established during the Vietnam war. The agreement saw reporters attached to a particular military unit and deployed to war zones alongside it. This led to issues around impartiality and objectivity since it essentially operated as Ministry of Defence propaganda.

Not that any mainstream UK news outlet is sufficiently critical about the monarchy anyway – particularly in terms of wealth inequality, racial inequality or neo/colonialism. But by controlling access, the royals remove a vital opportunity for scrutiny. In view of this, Harry and Meghan’s intention to step away from it is remarkable.

‘Credible’ journalism

This is not to dismiss the racist and sexist abuse that Meghan Markle has faced at points by certain (right-wing) media outlets. This ranged from articles littered with coded language that called her “exotic” to others that said outright that she was “straight outta Compton” and from “a gang-scarred home”. It raises serious questions about UK media-political alignments and ideologies, particularly at a time of growing far-right movements around the world.

Some coverage, however, such as criticism of the couple using private jets while campaigning against climate change, is entirely valid. Also, the couple’s statement that they will only be permitting “credible” journalists to cover their events begs the question, who gets to decide who is credible?

The National Union of Journalists has said that this is an attempt to “prevent the media from functioning and [compromises] the ability of journalists to do their jobs, which is completely unacceptable”. The new restriction, particularly in light of the couple’s recent statement about suing the Mail on Sunday for publishing a private letter that Markle had sent to her father, feels like a sweeping criticism of all journalists and media organisations. While many have been particularly vicious towards Markle – the Mail on Sunday in particular – others such as Hello! have barely said a negative word about the royals in their history. This raises a different set of questions around bias.

The couple’s need to shape a new kind of royal relationship with the media justifiably raises issues about the practice of royal reporting, the role of the royal correspondent and the structural racism that exists within parts of the British media. It also exposes the battle for control over the royal narrative. As of yet, however, it is unclear whether circumventing the royal rota and carving a new path for engagement will give the Sussexes more say in the story that is told or how much they are hounded in the long run. As the news settles, it seems like things are just the same as they have always been.

Harry, Meghan, and a right royal battle for control

On January 8, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/most-memorable-moments-of-prince-harry-and-meghan-274211">the Duke and Duchess of Sussex</a>, unveiled their controversial plan to walk away from royal roles.&nbsp;

“We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support her majesty the queen,'' they said in a joint statement.

"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the commonwealth and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity," the statement added.&nbsp;

Apparently, the announcement on the Sussex Royal Instagram page blindsided the Queen and other family members who had no idea it was coming, it sent tabloids into overdrive. Meanwhile, the Queen summoned Senior Royals to an emergency summit to discuss the future of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.&nbsp;

Billed as <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/sandringham-summit-whos-who-at-the-royal-gathering-274052">the Sandringham summit</a>, the meeting took place at the Queen's estate in Norfolk and involved Queen Elizabeth II, Harry his father Prince Charles and his brother Prince William, with Meghan reportedly joining the discussions by phone from Canada.&nbsp;

Soon after, the queen released a statement, that said, "My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.&nbsp;

Monarchy in Crisis?&nbsp;

It looks like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have won the reluctant approval of the 93-year-old Queen. But what does their exit mean for the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/kate-middleton-and-prince-williams-first-2020-public-appearance-274618">British monarchy</a>? And what really went wrong? &nbsp;

Let’s look at this and the other scandals that have rocked the British royal family, the world's most famous monarchy, in the last few decades:

The Sussexes 'step back'&nbsp;

Prince Harry was known as the 'rebel prince' much before he met Meghan on a blind date in mid-2016, set up by a mutual friend. The relationship moved quickly and the couple immediately became endless fodder for the tabloids. In November 2016, Harry’s communications secretary issued a statement condemning the British press’s torment of his girlfriend. This was the start of their troubled relationship with the tabloids. A year later, in November 2017, they got engaged. In an interview, Harry said he tried to warn his future wife 'as much as possible'&nbsp;about the inevitable media scrutiny, but the couple was still 'totally surprised'&nbsp;by it.

Despite these early setbacks, they got married at Windsor Castle in May 2017. American-born, biracial, divorced, former actress Meghan Markle, who also happened to be an independent and outspoken woman, became the Duchess of Sussex. A year later, she gave birth to Archie, the first baby of part African descent in the family. The couple’s relationship and the birth of their son were heralded by many as immensely symbolic moments of modern Britain. An example of the monarchy embracing modernity, but it was not to be.

Throughout it all, the British tabloids kept criticising the Sussex with most of the ire being directed at Meghan. A top-selling British tabloid dubbed their announcement as 'Megxit', putting the blame squarely on Meghan's shoulders. This isn't surprising since she has been at the receiving end for negative coverage by the British press. For issues ranging from her family background to cradling her baby bump, and even eating avocados. One British Radio host was even fired after posting a tweet where he compared their offspring to a baby chimpanzee. It's safe to assume that her race had something to do with her becoming the media's new punching bag.&nbsp;

For his part, Prince Harry has been vocal about what he sees as sexist and racist coverage, even making a statement comparing the treatment of his wife to that of his late mother Princess Diana, who tragically died in a crash as her driver sped away to escape the paparazzi.&nbsp;

There was trouble on other fronts as well, rumours of a rift between Pince Harry and his older brother Prince William started emerging in March 2019. Around this time, Prince Harry and Meghan moved out of Kensington Palace. 2.4 million pounds of public money, which is about Rs 24 crores, was spent on upgrading their new official residence- Frogmore cottage. Soon after, the couple announced that they intend to split from their combined charity with the Cambridge and start their own charity, Sussex Royal.&nbsp;

Trouble was brewing in the Royal family and it started making headlines when they took part in an intimate documentary while on a tour to South Africa. They revealed the strain and pressure of living in the public eye. Meghan even said that her friends warned her not to marry Prince Harry because of the British tabloids and her husband declared that he would not be bullied into playing a game that killed his mother. In November, they announced that they will not be spending Christmas with other members of the Royal family. Opting for a six-week holiday in Canada instead where Meghan is currently residing. &nbsp;

Interestingly after their latest Instagram post, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gained 500,000 Instagram followers in just four days. They are now just 200,000 behind Prince William and Kate Middleton who have 10.8 million followers. In fact, when they joined Instagram last year on April 2, they made a Guinness World record for gaining 1 million fans within 6 hours
&nbsp;
So will Harry and Meghan keep their titles while stepping back from the royal life and moving overseas? Well, so far the Sussex has expressed no intentions of relinquishing their HRH (His Royal Highness or Her Royal Highness) titles.&nbsp;

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are now expected to split their time between the UK and Canada, a country that lies within the commonwealth. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has offered his support, saying most Canadians would welcome the couple making their home there. However, he also added that further talks are needed over the costs of security.&nbsp;

Which bring us to the question of money. Right now the two receive money from the sovereign grant, a fund set up by the UK government for the Royal family. Apart from this, between them, they are estimated to have a net worth of $30 million. An accumulation of Harry’s yearly allowance and inheritance from his mother Dian and Meghan’s TV earnings.&nbsp;

As British royals, the couple is barred from earning their own cash, but this will change. So we may soon see them build celebrity empires like the Obamas or even the Kardashians. But by distancing themselves from the crown, one way or the other, they are certainly charting a new course.

Prince Andrew's sex scandal&nbsp;

The 'megxit bombshell' comes just months after the Duke of York, Prince Andrew was forced to step down from Royal duties, amid accusations of a sex scandal.&nbsp;

Prince Andrew, the second son and third child of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip announced his decision after consulting both his mother and his brother&nbsp;Prince Charles, amid growing criticism following a television interview he gave about his friendship with the late convicted sex offender- Jeffrey Epstein who committed suicide in August last year while awaiting trial for sex trafficking.&nbsp;

Prince Andrew is accused of having sex with Epstein's alleged 'sex slave' Virginia Roberts when she was just 17. The Duke of York has denied these allegations. But the FBI is continuing to investigate the case to untangle his history with the shamed American financier and his human trafficking racket. &nbsp;

In a disastrous interview, Prince Andrew, eighth-in-line to the throne, defended his friendship with Epstein, leaving viewers across the world aghast. The outcry finally forced Buckingham Palace to distance itself from the disgraced Duke - many royal experts surmise that he will not return to public duties until he is fully cleared of any wrongdoing.

Interestingly, his former wife, Sarah Ferguson, affectionately known as Fergie, with whom he continues to share a home, has stood behind him through this controversy.&nbsp;

Sarah Ferguson's scandalous photo&nbsp;

The Duchess of York faced her own crisis in 1992 when she was frozen out of the Royal Family after compromising photographs emerged of her on holiday with John Bryan, her financial advisor.&nbsp;

The Duke and Duchess of York tied the knot in 1986 - but just six years later their marriage ended in a scandal - they announced their separation in March 1992, but were still married when these photographs were published. They would go on to divorce in 1996.&nbsp;

The royal family didn’t want anything to do with Ferguson after the incident, but she was recently accepted into the Royal fold again and even attended the Royal Wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.&nbsp;

Princess Diana’s Untimely Death
&nbsp;
Half-past midnight, a black Mercedes crashed into a concrete pillar outside the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris. And the world lost Princess Diana - the people's Princess.

Diana’s boyfriend, Dodi Fayed, and their driver Henri Paul also died in the crash. Only one passenger survived - Trevor Rees-Jones - Fayed’s bodyguard.&nbsp;

In the wake of the crash, given Princess Diana's complicated relationship with Prince Charles and the Queen herself, all kinds of conspiracy theories began to emerge. But in the 2008 inquest of Diana's death, it was concluded that paul’s drunk driving and speeding were to blame for the accident.&nbsp;

However, many questions remain unanswered - why were they not wearing seatbelts? Why didn't Princess Diana have her own bodyguards? And could Diana have been saved?&nbsp;

At her funeral in September 1997, her brother Charles Spencer blamed the paparazzi, describing his sister as “The most hunted person of the modern age".

And hunted she was on the night of the fateful crash, the couple was trying to evade the press.&nbsp;

Diana and Dodi Fayed died barely six weeks after beginning a romance - rumours of Diana's impending engagement and even a pregnancy meant that the couple was relentlessly pursued.

The Egyptian millionaire’s father, Mohamed al-Fayed, believed that Royal Family and British Secret Services were plotting against the marriage because they disapproved of the match.

Diana's activism and glamour made her an international icon, but the Princess of Wales faced difficulties within the royal family and in the public eye from the start.

Prince Charles married lady Diana spencer in 1981, and they welcomed Prince William in 1982 and Prince Harry in 1984, but their relationship was visibly strained. They separated in 1992, before formally divorcing in 1996.

Flouting tradition, in 1995, she gave an explosive interview to journalist Martin Bashir where she revealed that “There were three people in this marriage”, alluding to her husband’s affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, adding it was “a bit crowded.” She also admitted to an adulterous affair with her riding instructor, James Hewitt.&nbsp;

A few weeks later, the Queen herself urged her son and daughter-in-law to divorce, and the following year, they made it official. Sadly, Princess Diana was killed just a year later. However, with these acts of defiance, she set a new precedent for the next generation of royals.

Prince Charles and Camilla’s affair&nbsp;

On the other hand, Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, went on to wed Camilla in 2005, 34 years after their first meeting, and the two are still together.&nbsp;

Interestingly, a year before Diana's interview, he too publicly admitting to having an affair. His confession sent ripples through the Royal Family.&nbsp;

At the time, the public largely blamed Prince Charles’ relationship with Camilla for the breakdown of his marriage to Diana - it became the scandal of the decade.&nbsp;

Princess Margaret, the original rebel &nbsp;

Queen Elizabeth II has been the central figure of Britain's monarchy for more than six decades. Head of state of the United Kingdom and 15 commonwealth nations, she married Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh in 1947. They have four children, eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.&nbsp;

The queen only had one sibling – Princess Margaret, the late countess of Snowdon. The two sisters could not have been more different. While the British monarch is famously staid and consistent, her younger sister was known as a rebellious royal, ‘a&nbsp;wild child'.

She fell in love with group captain Peter Townsend, a royal air force officer and the equerry to her father King George.&nbsp;

Apart from being a commoner, peter was also a divorcee, and divorcees weren't allowed to remarry in the church of England, which Princess Margaret's sister was the head of.&nbsp;

After facing much opposition, the Princess cut off all ties with Townsend and went on to marry photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones in 1960 - the first royal marriage to be broadcast on television. &nbsp;

However, the Royal marriage soon started to crumble and after years of infidelity by both partners, the couple separated. It was the first royal divorce since King Henry VIII's in 1540. &nbsp;

King Edward VIII Abdicates&nbsp;

In December 1936, the Queen's uncle - King Edward VIII abdicated the British throne to marry his lover Wallis Simpson - an American socialite who was divorced from her first husband and was pursuing the divorce of her second. &nbsp;&nbsp;

Being the British Monarch, King Edward VIII was also the head of the Church of England and was forbidden to marry a divorcee. and so he abdicated the throne after ruling for less than a year. Thereafter, he took the title Duke of Windsor and embarked on a life with his new wife in Paris.

And now, more than eight decades later, Prince Harry is set to follow on his footsteps. The circumstances surrounding Prince Harry and King Edward VIII’s royal status decisions are very different. Harry is not the king, but he is set to become a ‘part-time’ royal, having made a decision to quit or reject the royal life and defying the British monarchy.&nbsp;

On January 8, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, unveiled their controversial plan to walk away from royal roles. “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the royal family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support her majesty the queen,'' they said in a joint statement.

"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to the Queen, the commonwealth and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity," the statement added. Apparently, the announcement on the Sussex Royal Instagram page blindsided the Queen and other family members who had no idea it was coming, it sent tabloids into overdrive. Meanwhile, the Queen summoned Senior Royals to an emergency summit to discuss the future of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Billed as the Sandringham summit, the meeting took place at the Queen's estate in Norfolk and involved Queen Elizabeth II, Harry his father Prince Charles and his brother Prince William, with Meghan reportedly joining the discussions by phone from Canada. Soon after, the queen released a statement, that said, "My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family. Monarchy in Crisis? It looks like Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have won the reluctant approval of the 93-year-old Queen. But what does their exit mean for the British monarchy? And what really went wrong? Let’s look at this and the other scandals that have rocked the British royal family, the world's most famous monarchy, in the last few decades: The Sussexes 'step back' Prince Harry was known as the 'rebel prince' much before he met Meghan on a blind date in mid-2016, set up by a mutual friend. In an interview, Harry said he tried to warn his future wife 'as much as possible' about the inevitable media scrutiny, but the couple was still 'totally surprised' by it. Throughout it all, the British tabloids kept criticising the Sussex with most of the ire being directed at Meghan. A top-selling British tabloid dubbed their announcement as 'Megxit', putting the blame squarely on Meghan's shoulders. This isn't surprising since she has been at the receiving end for negative coverage by the British press. For issues ranging from her family background to cradling her baby bump, and even eating avocados. One British Radio host was even fired after posting a tweet where he compared their offspring to a baby chimpanzee. It's safe to assume that her race had something to do with her becoming the media's new punching bag. For his part, Prince Harry has been vocal about what he sees as sexist and racist coverage, even making a statement comparing the treatment of his wife to that of his late mother Princess Diana, who tragically died in a crash as her driver sped away to escape the paparazzi. There was trouble on other fronts as well, rumours of a rift between Pince Harry and his older brother Prince William started emerging in March 2019. Around this time, Prince Harry and Meghan moved out of Kensington Palace. 2.4 million pounds of public money, which is about Rs 24 crores, was spent on upgrading their new official residence- Frogmore cottage. Soon after, the couple announced that they intend to split from their combined charity with the Cambridge and start their own charity, Sussex Royal. Trouble was brewing in the Royal family and it started making headlines when they took part in an intimate documentary while on a tour to South Africa. They revealed the strain and pressure of living in the public eye. Meghan even said that her friends warned her not to marry Prince Harry because of the British tabloids and her husband declared that he would not be bullied into playing a game that killed his mother. In November, they announced that they will not be spending Christmas with other members of the Royal family. Opting for a six-week holiday in Canada instead where Meghan is currently residing. Interestingly after their latest Instagram post, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle gained 500,000 Instagram followers in just four days. They are now just 200,000 behind Prince William and Kate Middleton who have 10.8 million followers. In fact, when they joined Instagram last year on April 2, they made a Guinness World record for gaining 1 million fans within 6 hours So will Harry and Meghan keep their titles while stepping back from the royal life and moving overseas? Well, so far the Sussex has expressed no intentions of relinquishing their HRH (His Royal Highness or Her Royal Highness) titles. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are now expected to split their time between the UK and Canada, a country that lies within the commonwealth. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has offered his support, saying most Canadians would welcome the couple making their home there. However, he also added that further talks are needed over the costs of security. Which bring us to the question of money. Right now the two receive money from the sovereign grant, a fund set up by the UK government for the Royal family. Apart from this, between them, they are estimated to have a net worth of $30 million. An accumulation of Harry’s yearly allowance and inheritance from his mother Dian and Meghan’s TV earnings. As British royals, the couple is barred from earning their own cash, but this will change. So we may soon see them build celebrity empires like the Obamas or even the Kardashians. But by distancing themselves from the crown, one way or the other, they are certainly charting a new course. WATCH: Royal mess continues × Prince Andrew's sex scandal The 'megxit bombshell' comes just months after the Duke of York, Prince Andrew was forced to step down from Royal duties, amid accusations of a sex scandal. Prince Andrew, the second son and third child of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip announced his decision after consulting both his mother and his brother Prince Charles, amid growing criticism following a television interview he gave about his friendship with the late convicted sex offender- Jeffrey Epstein who committed suicide in August last year while awaiting trial for sex trafficking. Post split from royal family, Meghan Markle visits a women's charity in Canada

Amid the royal spat in Britain, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that there would be "many discussions to come" including on whether it will take on some costs of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/the-royal-exit-of-meghan-markle-and-prince-harry-things-we-know-so-far-274179">Prince Harry and Meghan Markle</a>'s security.

Speaking to a Canadian television network, Trudeau said so far the Canadian government has not been involved with their plans but confirmed that the government will play a role if they choose to live in Canada.

"There's still a lot of decisions to be taken by the royal family, by the Sussexes as themselves, as to what level of engagement they choose to have," Trudeau said in response to a reporter's question.

On being asked whether Canada will pay the security costs, Trudeau said, "I think that is part of the reflection that needs to be had and discussions are going on."

"I think there is there is a general feeling of appreciation for the Sussexes," Trudeau also said.

This comes after Queen Elizabeth reluctantly agreed to her grandson<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/independence-day-queen-elizabeth-ii-agrees-grandson-harry-wife-meghan-can-exit-senior-royal-role-274105"> Prince Harry and his wife Meghan's wish for a more independent future </a>after the British royal family held crisis talks on Monday to resolve a widening rift among the Windsors.

Harry and his American actress wife will now begin a "period of transition" that will see them split their time between Britain and Canada as they also seek a lifestyle less encumbered by royal duties and to end their reliance on public funding.

A final decision on the future of the couple, officially the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will be determined in days, Queen Elizabeth said in a statement.

"My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family," Elizabeth said.

"Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family."

The statement was highly unusual both in its informal tone and its personal nature, addressing the couple by name rather than by their titles.

Meghan, who is currently in Canada with their infant son Archie, had been expected to join Monday's discussion by telephone.

The royal crisis was triggered when Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, publicly announced last week that they wished to step back from royal duties and spend more time in North America.

Although there had been initial discussions about their future, neither the queen nor Charles were consulted beforehand, a step seen as hurtful and premature by a family whose roots go back through a thousand years of European history.

It also exposed suspected divisions in the Windsor family and prompted soul-searching over what it means to be royal in the 21st century.

"New role"

Harry and Meghan say they want a "progressive" new role for themselves and financial independence. As one of the world's most glamorous couples, they have also made clear that they were struggling with the intense media scrutiny.

Last year, they announced legal action against a British tabloid, and Harry said papers had been bullying his wife in a way reminiscent of the hounding his mother Princess Diana had suffered before her death in a Paris car crash in 1997.

But it is unclear how they will pull off a partial pullback from royal roles - which some media have dubbed "Megxit" in a play on Britain's tortuous Brexit departure from the European Union - or who will pay for a transatlantic lifestyle.

Currently, they are mainly funded by money from Prince Charles's Duchy of Cornwall estate as their royal roles have precluded them seeking personal incomes.

"These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days," the queen said in her statement.

Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said most Canadians are very supportive of having the royals in the country. "But how that looks and what kind of costs is involved, there is still lots of discussions to have," Trudeau told Global News in a television interview.

There are no provisions in Canada's Citizenship Act that confer Canadian citizenship status to members of the royal family by virtue of their status as a member of the monarchy, Canada's immigration department said in an emailed statement.

To become legal permanent residents of Canada, they would need to apply through normal immigration processes, the statement added.

Prince Charles, 71, has long sought a leaner royal family, but it is unclear how Harry and Meghan would fit into that model - especially if they essentially become Hollywood superstars.

In trying to resolve the crisis, the most powerful members of the so-called royal "Firm" are aware that the final outcome could shape the monarchy's future.

Elizabeth has served the country loyally since ascending the throne in 1952, earning the respect and admiration of most Britons, including many republicans, but the family has also sometimes faced accusations of being aloof and out of touch.

The breakdown in royal relations has dominated the British media for days, with newspapers running a host of stories, based on quotes from unidentified royal insiders, about a split between Harry and William, the Duke of Cambridge, and anger at the top of the family amid suspicion of leaks and ostracism.

In a sign of the tensions, Harry and William issued a rare public statement on Monday to denounce a report by the Times newspaper based on an unnamed source which said Harry and Meghan had been pushed away by "a bullying attitude" from William who had not been welcoming to Meghan.

"False"

"Despite clear denials, a false story ran in a UK newspaper today speculating about the relationship between The Duke of Sussex and The Duke of Cambridge," the statement said.

"For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful."

The furore over the couple, who married in May 2018 in a glittering ceremony watched by millions round the world, comes after a tough 2019 for the royal family.

Prince Andrew's friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein came under uncomfortable scrutiny while the queen's husband, Prince Philip, 98, received a police warning over a car crash.

Harry and his American actress wife will now begin a "period of transition" that will see them split their time between Britain and Canada as they also seek a lifestyle less encumbered by royal duties and to end their reliance on public funding. A final decision on the future of the couple, officially the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, will be determined in days, she said in a statement. (Meghan Markle and Harry | Photo Credit: Reuters) "My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family," Elizabeth said. "Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family." The statement was highly unusual both in its informal tone and its personal nature, addressing the couple by name rather than by their titles. Independence Day: Queen Elizabeth II agrees grandson Harry, Meghan can exit senior royal role

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex caught the British Royal family and the global media off guard last week when they announced their bombshell decision to quit front-line duties.

Harry and Meghan decided on this issue without consulting any senior royals from the sovereign downwards.

Queen Elizabeth has consented to her grandson Harry and Meghan's desire for an increasingly autonomous future after the British regal family held emergency chats on Monday to determine an augmenting fracture among the Windsors.&nbsp;

So, what will be their future course of action and how their lives will be?

Here’s everything we know so far.

Reason for leaving?

In a statement on their official Instagram account the couple said that&nbsp;“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex

During an interview, Prince Harry talked about how Princess Diana's demise in a fender bender while attempting to escape paparazzi keeps on being such a disastrous piece of his illustrious life.

“I think being part of this family, in this role, in this job, every single time I see a camera, every single time I hear a click, every single time I see a flash it takes me straight back, so in that respect, it’s the worst reminder of her life as opposed to the best,” he said during the interview.

What will happen to their Royal residence and financial security

According to the sussexroyal.com (official website of British Royals), the couple will keep on utilizing Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, England, as their official residence – with the consent of the queen. Subtleties on their Canadian home have not yet been uncovered.

There is no data concerning who will fund their security in North America but the Royal grant is just 5 per cent&nbsp;of the couple's earning. The rest 95 per cent of the money is a piece of the pay got by Prince Charles, produced by the Duchy of Cornwall.&nbsp;

Following their venturing down, Harry and Meghan won't get the Grant, yet they would like to keep accepting assets from the Prince of Wales.&nbsp;

Canada yet to decide if it will pay Harry and Meghan security costs

The Canadian government has yet to decide whether it will assume the security costs associated with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's decision to split their time between Canada and Britain, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Monday.

"I think that is part of the reflection that... needs to be had, and there are discussions going on," Trudeau said in an interview with Canadian television channel Global.

"We're not entirely sure what the final decisions will be, where the dispositions are and those are decisions for them," he said.

Canadian media have estimated that protecting the couple and their baby son Archie would cost about $1.3 million (Can$1.7 million) per year.

Subtleties on their Canadian home have not yet been uncovered. There is no data concerning who will fund their security in North America but the Royal grant is just 5 per cent of the couple's earning. "We're not entirely sure what the final decisions will be, where the dispositions are and those are decisions for them," he said. Queen Elizabeth II agrees to 'period of transition'; Harry & Megan to spend time in Canada, UK

Queen Elizabeth has summoned her grandson Prince Harry for a crisis meeting to discuss future arrangements for him and his wife Meghan following the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/as-prince-harry-and-meghan-markle-announce-separation-uk-monarchy-scrambles-for-solution-273323">couple's shock announcement</a> that they want to step back from royal duties.

Harry's father Prince Charles, the heir to the throne, and his elder brother Prince William, will also attend the meeting, due to take place on Monday at the queen's Sandringham estate in Norfolk, eastern England, a Buckingham Palace source told Reuters.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/meghan-markel-goes-back-to-canada-to-be-with-son-archie-after-royal-rift-273376">Meghan</a>, an American former TV actress, will try to join via telephone from Canada where she returned earlier in the week to rejoin the couple's baby son, Archie.

Harry and Meghan, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, surprised the rest of the royal family on Wednesday by publicly announcing they wanted a "new working model" that would allow them to spend more time in North America and to be financially independent.

They did not consult the 93-year-old monarch or other members of the family before making their announcement on a new website, a move which hurt and disappointed the queen and other royals, according to a royal source.

The meeting on Monday will be the first time the senior royals have met in person to discuss the concerns raised by Harry and Meghan.

Officials had been holding talks behind the scenes since the bombshell statement to try to work out a new arrangement for the couple, and a royal source said those efforts progressed well.

The consultations, which also included the British and Canadian governments, paved the way for a face-to-face meeting between Harry and the queen.

The palace source said it remained the queen's aim to a find a resolution to the crisis in days rather than weeks but it would require "complex and thoughtful discussions" and any agreement would take time to be implemented.

The split between Harry and the other Windsors is the latest crisis the royal family has faced in a period described last month as "bumpy" by the queen in a televised annual address.

Such is the global interest in Harry and Meghan that their news has overshadowed a scandal surrounding the queen's second son Prince Andrew and his friendship with disgraced late US&nbsp;financier Jeffrey Epstein, who hanged himself in jail in August while awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges.

The Sunday Times newspaper said the elder prince had spoken of his sadness at the rift. The brothers were close for years following the death of their mother Princess Diana in a Paris car crash in 1997.

The newspaper quoted William as saying to an unnamed friend: "I've put my arm around my brother all our lives and I can't do that any more, we're separate entities.

"I'm sad about that. All we can do, and all I can do, is try and support them and hope that the time comes when we're all singing from the same page. I want everyone to play on the team."

The couple said they would now "balance" their time between Britain and North America, rip up long-established relations with the press, and seek financial independence.

They released their shock statement on a pre-prepared new website, their Instagram account and through Buckingham Palace's email communications system.

An hour and 40 minutes later, the palace, seemingly rattled, issued a brief statement of its own, saying discussions were at an early stage and involved "complicated issues".

The mood in the palace was understood to be one of disappointment and even "hurt", according to the BBC, while Thursday's newspapers were full of reports of a family "split" and the queen's "dismay".

London's Evening Standard newspaper said they had "defied clear instructions from the queen" not to go public about any future plans at this time.

It added senior courtiers had warned the couple "will be punished for this".

Meanwhile Madame Tussauds London said it was moving its waxworks of the pair away from other top family figures "to reflect the upcoming change in the royal line-up".

- 'Going Rogue' -

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams said Harry and Meghan announcing this step without the 93-year-old monarch's blessing was "extraordinary".

"This is symptomatic, clearly, of the fact that they are unhappy with royal roles and feel deeply pressurised," he told AFP.

"They've chosen to... go rogue. The result, therefore, could have very serious consequences."

The couple's decision follows a turbulent year, in which they admitted to struggling in the spotlight, and growing apart from William.
They have also lashed out at negative news coverage and taken several papers to court -- another unusual move.

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the royal family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen," they said.

"We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution."

Meanwhile on their new website, they said they would no longer work with the royal rota -- a well-established system whereby media access is facilitated and the press take turns covering events and share the coverage.

Instead the pair will attempt to invite only "specialist", "grassroots", "credible" and "young, up-and-coming" media to events.
Royal analysts said the changes were unprecedented for senior family members.

"We would have them as members of the royal family carrying out some official duties but also operating privately as well, and there isn't really a precedent for that," said expert Victoria Murphy.

Britons passing Buckingham Palace on Thursday appeared surprised at the news. &nbsp;

"They both knew what they were getting into and I think that they need to meet that challenge," said Roger Sainsbury, a member of the armed forces.

- 'Different paths' -

Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, are among the core members of the royal family and -- along with William and his wife Kate -- are seen as embodying the monarchy's future.

They <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/meghan-markle-prince-harry-to-miss-christmas-in-uk-this-year-262066">spent six weeks over Christmas in Canada</a> after speaking of the pressure of being in the spotlight following their fairytale wedding at Windsor Castle in May 2018 and son Archie's birth 12 months later.&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/prince-harry-and-meghan-markles-possible-move-might-affect-canadian-taxpayers-273290">Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's possible move might affect Canadian taxpayers</a>

They skipped the royal family's traditional Christmas at Sandringham, the sovereign's private estate in eastern England, spending the festive season instead with Meghan's US mother Doria Ragland.

Rumours that all was not well with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex surfaced in October when Harry -- sixth in line to the throne -- admitted that he and William were "on different paths" and had good and bad days in their relationship.

Asked whether she was "not really OK" and if life had "really been a struggle" after becoming a mother and living under intense media scrutiny, Meghan appeared emotional and replied simply: "Yes."

Britons passing Buckingham Palace on Thursday appeared surprised at the news. "They both knew what they were getting into and I think that they need to meet that challenge," said Roger Sainsbury, a member of the armed forces. - 'Different paths' - Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, are among the core members of the royal family and -- along with William and his wife Kate -- are seen as embodying the monarchy's future. As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announce separation, UK monarchy scrambles for solution

On Sunday, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle announced they will step back from senior roles in the royal family - a move that has raised questions about how they will earn an income, who will pay for their security, and what their new positions will involve.
Exactly how they will combine private work and royal duties remains unclear. The couple in an initial statement said they hoped to become financially independent and set up a new charity while continuing some royal duties.

Who pays?&nbsp;

Harry and Meghan said in a question-and-answer section of their new website that they are seeking financial independence from the monarchy`s funding, known as the "Sovereign Grant". This is a government handout that covers the running costs of the royal household and travel expenses.

The couple said the grant was equivalent to 5% of their income towards running their official office. They did not say if they will give up the remaining 95 percent which comes from Prince Charles`s centuries-old private estate.

By foregoing money from the taxpayer, the couple indicated they will seek some form of private income.

"They value the ability to earn a professional income, which in the current structure they are prohibited from doing," the statement said. "For this reason they have made the choice to become members of the Royal Family with financial independence."

Where will they live?

They said they now plan to divide their time between the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/looks-like-theres-truth-to-meghan-markle-prince-harry-moving-to-canada-after-palace-refuses-to-deny-it-273019">United Kingdom and North America.</a>

They will continue to base themselves at Frogmore Cottage in the grounds of the queen`s Windsor Castle when in the United Kingdom. The property was recently renovated at a cost of 2.4 million pounds ($3.13 million) by taxpayers.

Meghan was born in Los Angeles and she grew up in Hollywood. Harry and Meghan spent the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/meghan-markle-prince-harry-to-miss-christmas-in-uk-this-year-262066"> last six weeks of 2019 in Canada</a> and their first official appearance of 2020 was a trip to Canada House in London, home of Canada`s diplomatic mission to Britain.

Who pays for security?

The couple made clear that they expected the government to continue to finance their security costs as mandated by the Home Office, which is responsible for the security of the royal family. The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/prince-harry-and-meghan-markles-possible-move-might-affect-canadian-taxpayers-273290">cost of the security</a> is never made public, but it is estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of pounds a year.

How will they earn money?

The couple`s new website Sussex Royal does not outline how they intend to fund themselves in future. Some of the Queen`s other grandchildren work, including Prince Andrew`s daughters <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/this-is-why-princess-beatrices-wedding-will-not-be-televised-like-sister-eugenie-or-cousins-william-and-harry-273232">Beatrice</a> and Eugenie, who work in business and the arts.
Last year, it was reported that Harry would be executive producer of a documentary on mental health with U.S. television mogul Oprah Winfrey for Apple`s video streaming service.

Royal biographer Penny Junor suggested Meghan, who starred in TV legal drama "Suits", might revive her acting career, given the demand and fees she could command.

Six months ago Harry and Meghan applied to the UK Intellectual Property Office to trademark the phrases Sussex Royal and Sussex Royal Foundation for use on books, stationery, clothing such as pyjamas and socks, charity campaigns and the provision of training, sport and social care.

What about the media?

The couple announced they are to radically change media access to their official engagements, and will no longer participate in the traditional "royal rota" system, which is an agreement providing access for royal correspondents.

The royal rota system allows access to their engagements by accredited correspondents, who pool photographs and video, to ensure minimum interference with the engagement itself.

Now the couple said their intention is to speak directly to the public through social media, and they would deny automatic access to some royal correspondents.

This means that they could be the target of more paparazzi photographers, who will no longer worry about losing access to official events if they are already excluded.

What will happen to their titles?

The couple made no mention of giving up their royal titles. Instead, they stated on their website that other royal family members retain their titles while earning an income.

"There is precedent for this structure and it applies to other current members of the Royal Family who support the monarch and also have full time jobs external to their commitment to the monarchy," the statement said.

Meet the 'half royals', Prince Harry and Meghan Markle; how will the separation from the family work out for the couple?

As Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their decision to step away from senior roles in the royal family and shift base to Canada, security experts of the country now feel that the couple's move could prove to be costly for Canadian taxpayers. The taxpayers could be on the hook for millions of dollars a year in security expenses due to the couple, security experts said.

The couple, formally known as the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/prince-harry-meghan-markle-quit-royal-front-line-in-shock-move-273083"> Duke and Duchess of Sussex</a>, stunned Queen Elizabeth and the rest of the royal family this week by saying they plan to spend much of their time in North America.

While the pair have not said where in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/looks-like-theres-truth-to-meghan-markle-prince-harry-moving-to-canada-after-palace-refuses-to-deny-it-273019">North America they planned to reside</a>, many observers pointed to Canada as a logical choice. The couple spent the last six weeks of 2019 in that nation, part of the British Commonwealth of countries that have the queen as their head of state.

The Canadian government would likely have a legal obligation to provide them with security because of their royal status, security experts said.

"I don`t believe they can refuse the government of Canada`s security," said Larry Busch, an ex-Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer who directed security for world leaders including U.S. presidents and the royal family.<a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/meghan-markle-zendaya-kylie-jenner-more-among-the-top-10-most-influential-dressers-of-2019-see-pics-263682">Also see:&nbsp;Meghan Markle named top fashion icon of 2019 dethroning Kylie Jenner</a>

The cost could easily run into the millions of dollars, said Mike Zimet, whose eponymous New York executive security firm has protected clients including US&nbsp;Senator Bernie Sanders and actors Lin-Manuel Miranda and Alec Baldwin.&nbsp;

"If they want private protection, then a whole machine needs to be built around them," he said.

The level of security they need would be defined by a threat assessment, said Joe Balz, president of GloProSec Preventative Services, a Toronto-based security company, and an ex-RCMP officer who has worked with the royal family and other heads of state in the past.

"There`s always going to be the odd idiot who causes some type of problem," Balz said, adding that they would be safer in Canada than in the United States, where gun laws are much laxer.

Prince Harry and Meghan have said gaining financial autonomy is a key goal, but declined to say whether this extends to the cost of security, stating that their security detail is mandated by the British Home Office.

They also would need to worry about kidnapping of their son, Archie, said Zimet, who called that threat a "major situation, especially when it comes to terrorists. Kidnap a kid, hold them for ransom, what are the parents going to do?"

A poll for Canadian news company Postmedia found that more than 60 percent of the 1,515 Canadians surveyed would support the appointment of Prince Harry as governor general, the queen`s representative in Canada, who acts as the head of state on her behalf.
The poll was conducted on January 6, two days before the couple announced their plan to move away from their senior royal roles.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's possible move might affect Canadian taxpayers

Trevor Noah had a good laugh on Thursday at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's expense. The South African comedian took sly digs at the royal couple hours after they announced their decision to step back from <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/prince-harry-meghan-markle-quit-royal-front-line-in-shock-move-273083">senior roles in the royal family.&nbsp;</a>

Reacting to the news on 'The Daily Show', Trevor jokingly suggested that it seems like it was Meghan's idea.&nbsp;

“This is what happens when you bring the first black woman into the Royal Family,” Trevor quipped and added, "She looked at Harry and was like, ‘You need a job! You a grown a** man, you can’t still be living in your momma’s house, Harry.'"

Trevor also pointed out that no matter what job Prince Harry took up, his royal title would never leave him.&nbsp;

'Should be good at waving': Trevor Noah has a job offer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

They are literally rewriting Britain's history. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan stunned the British monarchy on Wednesday by quitting as front-line members. Reports state that the couple did not consult Queen Elizabeth II before making the announcement.&nbsp;

In a shock announcement, the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/looks-like-theres-truth-to-meghan-markle-prince-harry-moving-to-canada-after-palace-refuses-to-deny-it-273019">couple said they would spend time in North America </a>and rip up long-established relations with the press.

Media reports said the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made their bombshell statement without notifying either Harry's grandmother the monarch, or his father Prince Charles.

The surprise news follows a turbulent year for the couple, who have openly said they have struggled in the spotlight and grown apart from Harry's brother Prince William. They have also reacted badly to negative news coverage.

"We intend to step back as 'senior' members of the royal family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen," they said in a statement released by Buckingham Palace.

"We have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution," they added.
"We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America."

The announcement appeared to catch the royal family by surprise.

Buckingham Palace put out a second statement an hour and 40 minutes later, saying discussions with Harry and Meghan were "at an early stage".

"We understand their desire to take a different approach, but these are complicated issues that will take time to work through," it added.

It was understood that the mood in Buckingham Palace was one of disappointment and even, according to the BBC, "hurt".

- Struggling in the spotlight -

Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, are among the most senior, core members of the royal family, and, along with<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/a-royal-split-britains-prince-harry-wife-meghan-to-get-new-base-at-buckingham-palace-203420"> William and his wife Kate,</a> seen as the monarchy's future.

The pair spent six weeks over Christmas in Canada after speaking of the pressure of being in the spotlight following their fairytale wedding at Windsor Castle in May 2018 and son Archie's birth 12 months later.

They skipped the royal family's traditional Christmas at Sandringham, the sovereign's private estate in eastern England, spending the festive season instead with Meghan's mother Doria Ragland.

Rumours that all was not well with the Sussexes surfaced in October when Harry, sixth in line to the throne, admitted that he and William were "on different paths" and had good and bad days in their relationship.

"We don't see each other as much as we used to," he told ITV television's Tom Bradby, whom Harry and William have grown to trust with interviews over the years.

Asked by Bradby if she was "not really OK" and life had "really been a struggle" becoming a mother while living under intense media scrutiny, Meghan appeared emotional and replied simply: "Yes."

Bradby said Wednesday that he sensed he was witnessing "a long, sad farewell to this royal life".

"This is a new war of the Windsors -- and it's not over yet."

- Media battle -

In October, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/lost-my-mother-now-my-wife-is-falling-victim-to-same-powerful-force-prince-harry-takes-legal-action-against-british-press-for-bullying-meghan-markle-253172">Harry issued a stinging statement</a> about general tabloid coverage and launched the first of a handful of lawsuits against newspaper publishers.

Asked if Meghan was facing the same media pressures as his mother Diana, who died in a car crash in Paris in 1997 while pursued by paparazzi, Harry told Bradby: "I will not be bullied into playing a game that killed my mum."

On a new website, the couple said they would no longer take part in the royal rota.

The rota system is an established arrangement between the palace and the press whereby news organisations take it in turns to cover events and then share the pictures, text and video with everyone in the pool, avoiding the mass media scrambles of the past.
Instead the couple will attempt to invite only "specialist", "grassroots", "credible" and "young, up-and-coming" media to events.

Queen Elizabeth's former press secretary Dickie Arbiter told Sky News television that the couple's approach was "a succession of doing things their own way -- which is the wrong way".

"Sometimes there's good press; sometimes there's bad press. You take the rough with the smooth."

- 'Always ends in tears' -

Currently, Harry and Meghan's costs are largely funded from Charles' private income from the heir to the throne's estates, while the police foots their security bill.

Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt told Channel 4 television that royals thinking they can earn money in a side career "has always ended in tears".

Newspaper headlines on Thursday included The Sun's "Megxit", saying the couple had sparked civil war at the palace.&nbsp;"They didn't even tell the Queen," said the Daily Mirror, while the Star said,&nbsp;"The Royal formerly known as Prince".

You take the rough with the smooth." - 'Always ends in tears' - Currently, Harry and Meghan's costs are largely funded from Charles' private income from the heir to the throne's estates, while the police foots their security bill. Former BBC royal correspondent Peter Hunt told Channel 4 television that royals thinking they can earn money in a side career "has always ended in tears". Newspaper headlines on Thursday included The Sun's "Megxit", saying the couple had sparked civil war at the palace. "They didn't even tell the Queen," said the Daily Mirror, while the Star said, "The Royal formerly known as Prince".
