Ant-Man 3 writer says MCU movie's bad reviews surprised him: 'Those were not good'

<p><strong><em>Ant-Man 3</em> movie review: </strong>The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a behemoth that appears to be too big to fail. Despite proclamations by Kevin Feige and others overseeing this interconnected film franchise, the Marvel formula has remained mostly consistent, with a few notable exceptions. But clearly, it still works. Even the less exciting installments, like the <em>Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania</em>, the 31st film in this juggernaut of a franchise, are met with raucous laughter and cheers every few minutes. While watching the movie in the theater, it seemed like the audience was primed to erupt with laughter at even the slightest hint of a joke. It has become a routine almost, a thing one just has to do.</p>

<p>Me? If you have read anything I have written about Marvel in recent times, you would know I got disillusioned long before Thanos faced the Avengers. Marvel formula bores me out of my mind.</p>

<p>There are, of course, benefits of a shared universe from a storytelling point of view. The sandbox allows the writers to create exciting, interconnected stories and explore the more interesting supporting characters further through spinoffs movies or TV shows. The world feels richer, complex, and lived-in when you spot hints of other characters while watching a movie or show unrelated to them. That sense of unity and shared continuity is what comic-book companies have cashed in on for decades.</p>

<p>But then, there are pitfalls as well. The tone largely has to stay the same. Feige and his team have to make sure the scribes understand the connections between the characters. And this breeds mediocrity of relying upon callbacks, cameos, and Easter eggs. It's not as though I completely abhor those. I began reading comics before I was 10 and have not stopped. I think I never will. I love all references to other stuff, but in moderation. Even as just a consumer of these stories, I understand they cannot collectively serve as an alternative to a well-crafted story, engaging dialogue, and fully-realised characters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But since this is the almighty formula and this is what fans of these movies expect, the people in charge of the MCU have no choice but to cater to those expectations.&nbsp;</p>

He is not all-powerful, but has technology, mind, and will at his disposal that is far superior to any superhero alone. Jonathan Majors plays Kang as somebody truly desperate but will never let it show on his face. He hides devilish intelligence beneath a reasonable, mild-mannered demeanour. "Just give me this, and I will give you that in return," he says, straight-faced (paraphrased to protect spoilers, of course). But Majors is nuanced enough to make that statement give an edge. It is a full-bodied performance that makes the movie less of a chore.&nbsp;</p>

<p>If you can't tell already,&nbsp;<em>Quantumania</em> is an absolute dud. I felt bad for genuinely great actors that populate this thing for having to mouth lines that might as well have come out from that AI thingy everyone these days seems so fond of. The script is, and I cannot stress this enough, execrable. The screenwriter behind this film is Jeff Loveness and that should frighten you. For he is also writing the next <em>Avengers </em>movie, <em>The Kang Dynasty</em>. MCU is certainly not getting any better soon.</p>

The world feels richer, complex, and lived-in when you spot hints of other characters while watching a movie or show unrelated to them. That sense of unity and shared continuity is what comic-book companies have cashed in on for decades. But then, there are pitfalls as well. The tone largely has to stay the same. Feige and his team have to make sure the scribes understand the connections between the characters. And this breeds mediocrity of relying upon callbacks, cameos, and Easter eggs. It's not as though I completely abhor those. I began reading comics before I was 10 and have not stopped. I think I never will. I love all references to other stuff, but in moderation. Even as just a consumer of these stories, I understand they cannot collectively serve as an alternative to a well-crafted story, engaging dialogue, and fully-realised characters. But since this is the almighty formula and this is what fans of these movies expect, the people in charge of the MCU have no choice but to cater to those expectations. Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantamania: Everything to know

<p>Paris' defence minister on Sunday condemned the latest instalment of Marvel's Black Panther franchise, which depicts French troops caught trying to steal resources belonging to the fictional African kingdom of Wakanda.</p>

<p>"I strongly condemn this false and deceptive representation of our armed forces," Sebastien Lecornu wrote on Twitter, responding to a clip from the November movie posted by a journalist.</p>

<p>The scene turns on a group of bound French soldiers being brought into a UN meeting, embarrassing Paris' ambassador to the world body, after they were caught on a secret mission to a Wakandan base in Mali.</p>

<p>Journalist Jean Bexon, who posted the Black Panther clip, noted, "The evil French mercenaries operating in Mali are dressed like soldiers from Operation Barkhane," a real-life military mission.<br />

France is particularly sensitive to its image in West Africa after military juntas in Mali and Burkina Faso demanded the departure of French troops, deployed to the Sahel region since 2013 to fight jihadists.</p>

<p>"I am thinking of and honouring the 58 French soldiers who died defending Mali, at its request, in the face of Islamist terrorist groups," Lecornu wrote.</p>

<p>The defence ministry told AFP that France was not calling for withdrawal or censorship of a work of art.</p>

<p>But "no revisionism can be allowed about France's recent actions in Mali: we intervened at the county's own request to fight armed terrorist groups, far from the story told in the film, namely a French army coming to pillage natural resources," the ministry added.</p>

<p>People close to Lecornu &nbsp;said he was "angry at seeing the film", which was released as Russia appears to be making progress in turning West African populations against France and its military deployments.</p>

<p>Mali called on Russia's Wagner mercenary group to reinforce its army once French troops left -- although the junta continues to deny hiring the fighters -- and there has been speculation that Burkina may follow suit.<br />

<p>Now Feige, while speaking to The Movie Business Podcast said, "I’ve been at Marvel Studios for over 22 years, and most of us here at Marvel Studios have been around a decade or longer together. “From probably my second year at Marvel, people were asking, ‘Well, how long is this going to last? Is this fad of comic book movies going to end?'”</p>

<p>He added, “I didn’t really understand the question. Because to me, it was akin to saying after ‘Gone With the Wind,’ ‘Well, how many more movies can be made off of novels? Do you think the audience will sour on movies being adapted from books?’ You would never ask that because there’s an inherent understanding among most people that a book can be anything. A novel can have any type of story whatsoever. So it all depends on what story you’re translating. Non-comic readers don’t understand that it’s the same thing in comics.”</p>

<p>He went on to iterate that writers and directors working on comic-book movies have a treasure trove of more than eight decades of stories and characters to mine from.</p>

Ever since the so-called 'Infinity Saga' ended with 2019's 'Avengers: Endgame', many MCU movies and shows have struggled to recreated the pre-Endgame magic. Not including the two specials from Marvel Studios, we saw three movies and three TV shows, and with an exception of 'She-Hulk', they all were disappointments (to this scribe, at least. You may differ). It appears James Cameron's prophesised so-called 'Avengers Fatigue' is finally here. Clearly, too much of anything, even MCU, is bad. Marvel Studios and its parent company Disney decided to expand the MCU by launching a half-dozen (or so) TV shows to support the new streaming service Disney+, and it has had the reverse effect. MCU feels smaller somehow.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the rumours of MCU's demise, exaggerated though they may be, can augur well for DC Extended Universe or DCEU. While the MCU started with 2008's summer release of Jon Favreau's 'Iron Man', the DCEU's beginning came half a decade later in 2013 with Zack Snyder's 'Man of Steel', and it has only played catchup since then.&nbsp;</p>

In association with Carter, JJ Valaya created some exquisite designs for actress Angela Bassett who played Queen Ramonda in the film. Now, the Mahershala Ali-led movie will release on September 6, 2024. It was earlier scheduled to be released on November 3, 2023. The release dates of 'Avengers: Secret Wars', 'Deadpool 3,' and 'Fantastic Four', have also been pushed. <p>The first early reactions of the upcoming Disney+ Marvel animated series 'I Am Groot' are here. Created by Ryan Little, the show is nothing more than a series of shorts and has no direct relation to the Marvel Cinematic Universe canon. It’s tagline reads “A hero of few words returns.” It features the adventures of &nbsp;Baby Groot as he grows up and interacts with a variety of characters. One of MCU's most adorable character, Groot first debuted in James Gunn's 2014 film 'Guardians of the Galaxy' as an adult version of himself. At the end of the movie, he sacrificed himself to save his comrades, the other Guardians.</p>

<p>But a new Groot sprouted up like a plant in his place, and grew up to become a new Groot. Vin Diesel returns to voice the character. Bradley Cooper, meanwhile, reprises the voice role of Rocket Raccoon from the main MCU timeline.</p>

<p>Decider's Alex Zalben wrote, "#IAmGroot? More like "cute," because Disney+'s Groot shorts are delightful little snippets featuring everyone's favorite mono-phrased tree alien. The media giant has been in hot water over its ambiguous approach to LGBTQ issues.</p>

More often than not the city is turned into a big pile of rubble, renewing the traumatic, deeply buried memories of those MCU fans who lived through 9/11.</p>

Because he was on a Malthusian quest to reduce the load on the universe -- so that the rest half of the living beings will be prosperous.</p>

Over the centuries, research has proven that it is not the population that is the problem, but resource distribution. Some have everything, and some have nothing. If only Thanos had solved the hunger problem, we would not be in this mess.&nbsp;</p>

We do not know how the new narrative is shaping up, and beyond a few vague hints, we do not know who will be the next Big Bad. But there are several upcoming MCU projects that should give more evidence so we can at least theorise. Even speculation is impossible without at least a little information.</p>
