<p>Mariah Carey&nbsp;sparkled Thursday as her peers inducted the beloved diva into the prestigious Songwriters Hall of Fame, part of a class that also includes Pharrell, Steve Miller and the Isley Brothers.</p>

<p>This edition of the gala that honours the composers behind pop culture's most indelible hits was years in the making after the 51st annual edition originally slated for 2020 was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.</p>

<p>A true industry award and who's who of music, the Songwriters Hall of Fame gala foregoes a televised event in favor of a festive dinner and intimate concert.</p>

<p>But even without a broadcast, the Manhattan ballroom was glowing with star power, not least thanks to Carey, who strutted the stage in a glittering, curve-hugging gown as she accepted the coveted honor.</p>

<p>Carey -- whose songwriting talent has long been overshadowed by her elastic vocal range and pop star image -- doubled as the night's stand-up comedian, making light of her own reputation as high-maintenance, at one point donning sunglasses to make a point about the less than ideal lighting.</p>

<p>But she struck a more earnest note in celebrating her fellow inductees and songwriters more broadly, calling them "unsung heroes."</p>

<p>For artist Jimmy Jam, who along with Terry Lewis produced a slew of massive hits including for Janet Jackson, Carey is among an elite class of songwriters whose work is timeless.</p>

<p>"There's nobody that's more savvy than her, that works harder, that knows all the intricacies of writing and is passionate about it," he told AFP on the red carpet.</p>

<p>Carey chose self-taught singing prodigy Liamani Segura to perform at the ceremony in her honor, and the 13-year-old led the crowd through a medley of the Long Island-born singer's smashes including "Fantasy," "One Sweet Day" and, of course, "All I Want For Christmas Is You."</p>

<p>Earlier in the night, inductee Miller shredded through his space dream of a hit "Fly Like An Eagle," after being inducted by his friend, the actor Bryan Cranston.</p>

<p>"It's really the highest honor -- the most intellectual honor," Miller, 78, told AFP on the red carpet of entering the songwriting pantheon. "It means the most to me."</p>

<p>- 'Sense of direction' -</p>

<p>Miller's performance followed a showstopper of an opening from St. Vincent, who inducted the Eurythmics -- the duo comprised of Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart -- after delivering a spot-on version of "Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)" that had Lil Nas X on his feet, a shock of blond curls bobbing atop his pale pink suit.</p>

<p>Stone, who performs as Vince Vance with the country-pop band Vince Vance &amp; the Valiants, accused the defendants of having illegally exploited his "popularity and unique style" and caused confusion by recording the newer song without his permission.</p>

<p>Carey`s and Stone`s songs have different lyrics and melodies.</p>

<p>Spokespeople for Carey and Sony Music did not immediately respond to requests for comment.</p>

<p>Carey`s song appeared on her album "Merry Christmas," and has long received widespread play on radio and in retail shopping environments during the holiday season.</p>

<p>It has also topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart every year since 2019, despite having been recorded a quarter century earlier. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" was Carey`s 19th No. 1 song, one fewer than the Beatles.</p>

<p>Stone said his own song had received "extensive airplay" during the 1993 Christmas season, and also appeared on Billboard charts.</p>

<p>Actor Nick Cannon is mourning the loss of his youngest child, baby boy Zen. Cannon announced on his daytime show 'Nick Cannon' that his five-month-old son Zen had died of brain cancer. Cannon shares the baby with model Alyssa Scott.&nbsp;<br />

"Today is a special one y`all for many reasons but it`s not gonna be an easy one. I haven`t even shared this with anybody, not even the crew. I had a very tough weekend," Cannon began. The talk show host said that they took Zen to the doctor when he was 2 months old after they noticed his head seemed large.<br />

"He had this really interesting breathing and by the time he was two months old I noticed...he had this nice sized head, I called it a Cannon head. We didn't think anything of it, he had a normal Cannon head. But I wanted to take him to the doctor to get the breathing and the sinus thing checked out. We thought it would be a routine process," he said.</p>

<p>The doctors discovered fluid building up in Zen's head and a malignant tumour that required brain surgery. He subsequently had the surgery and a shunt to drain the fluid from his head."We were faithful and hopeful for that time. We carried on, he was still just playing with his brothers and sisters, I embraced every moment. Zen's mom, Alyssa, was just the strongest woman I've ever seen. Never had an argument, never was angry. Was emotional when she needed to be but always the best mom, and continues to be the best mom," Cannon said.<br />

Zen is Cannon's seventh child. He was born earlier this year.&nbsp;<br />

According to Cannon, the baby's health took a turn for the worse around Thanksgiving as the "tumour began to grow a lot faster."<br />

The comedian said they spent "quality time" with Zen over the weekend in California, where he brought him to the ocean with Scott on Sunday before having to fly back to New York for his show.</p>

<p>The comedian got emotional on the show and revealed that this weekend was the last time he held his son."I didn't know how I was gonna handle today but I just really wanted to grieve with my family, people who love you. I didn't want to make it about any pageantry so I kind of went back and forth of what I should do but I was always taught, you go through it you grow through it, you keep pushing," Cannon told his audience.</p>
