<p>China first announced plans in 2018 to build a new London embassy in keeping with its rising ambitions, buying land on the former site of the Royal Mint - the maker of British coins - for about 250 million pounds ($318 million).</p>

<p>China had plans to build a 700,000-square-foot embassy. The embassy would be China's biggest mission in Europe. It would almost be twice the size of the Chinese embassy in Washington.</p>

<p>But while unelected planning officers in London's Tower Hamlets council accepted the proposal, locally elected councillors overruled it in late 2022, rejecting it on security grounds and the impact on residents.</p>

<p>A spokeswoman for Tower Hamlets council said the Chinese government had until Thursday to appeal the decision, and no prior notice of plans to appeal had been given, something that would be needed if it wanted to overturn the decision.</p>

<p>The spokeswoman said that the Chinese government could submit a new application at a later date in order to use the site for an embassy in future.</p>

<p>Chinese officials have expressed frustration with the British government over its failure to help secure planning permission at official-level meetings, people involved in those talks have previously told Reuters.</p>

<p>A major controversy has erupted in East London after one of the walls of Brick Lane—a well-known spot for promoting street art—was covered with graffiti admiring the Chinese Communist Party ideology.</p>

<p>According to local media reports, Chinese students studying in the UK spray-painted the wall with 24 large red characters that read “prosperity, democracy, civilization, harmony, freedom, equality, justice, rule of law, patriotism, dedication, integrity, and friendliness”—the core socialist values outlined by the CCP and President Xi Jinping.</p>

<p>It is reported that the incident took place over the weekend and the students live-streamed their actions on the popular Chinese lifestyle app Xiaohongshu.</p>

<p>The act drew severe condemnation from netizens after the video spread to other social media platforms and was swiftly covered with anti-Beijing slogans.</p>

<h2><strong>Anti-China slogans emerge&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>Guardian reported that the pro-Chinese slogans were soon painted over with references to the Tiananmen Square massacre in 1989, with phrases seen like, “Free Taiwan”, “Free Tibet” and “Free Uyghurs”.</p>

<p>By Monday morning, the local council removed both the pro- and anti-China graffiti.</p>

<p>At the same time, the graffiti war was even more divisive online, with several rights groups and activists calling the move&nbsp;“disgraceful” and “Orwellian doublespeak propaganda”.</p>

<p>But one of the students who did the artwork said in his Instagram post that the piece "didn't have much political meaning".</p>

Graffiti war breaks out at London’s Brick Lane over China slogans  

<p>The UK police arrested a man on Tuesday in London after a stabbing incident took place outside the British Museum which, as per reports, prompted immediate evacuation of the popular tourist attraction.</p>

<p>As per London's Metropolitan Police, the incident occurred at around 10:00 am (0900 GMT) on the street bordering the southern perimeter of the world-famous site. The police further added the man had been arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm.</p>

<p>"Police have arrested a man on suspicion of GBH (grievous bodily harm) following an incident," the force said.</p>

<p>"A man was treated for a stab wound to the arm at the scene and taken by London Ambulance Service to hospital."</p>

<p>"His condition is being assessed."</p>

<p>According to the Met, it was "an isolated incident" and there was no remaining risk to the public.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It is not being treated as terror-related," the force added, noting the immediate area may remain restricted "for much of today".</p>

<p>London Ambulance Service released a statement saying that its medical professionals treated the man at the scene for a wound that he sustained on his arm due to the incident, "before taking him to a major trauma centre as a priority", as per Metro reports.</p>

<p>"The museum has now reopened with raised security including a heightened search operation."&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per news agency ANI reports, the posters of the rally, that emerged on social media, contained threats to the Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami and Shashank Vikram, Consul General of India, Birmingham.</p>

<p>A UK court on Tuesday will consider contentious plans to extend a scheme obliging the most polluting vehicles to pay for using London's roads, as opponents engage in protests — and even sabotage.</p>

<p>The High Court case comes fewer than two months before London Mayor Sadiq Khan's expansion of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is set to take effect.</p>

<p>The scheme — first introduced in 2019 and separate from the city's two-decades-old congestion charge — requires more polluting vehicles to pay a £12.50 ($16) toll on days they are driven within inner London.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some are escalating their opposition, with TfL confirming that more than 200 enforcement cameras have suffered sabotaged.</p>

<p>London's Metropolitan police have launched a "proactive operation" in response, charging two men in May with criminal damage and other offences.</p>

<p>"We have been proactively targeting those we suspect of causing or seeking to cause damage," said Detective Superintendent Daniel Smith, whose officers are leading the investigation.</p>

<p>"We are aware of the active discussions online and the passion felt by some in our communities. We will continue to support lawful protest but criminal activity is not acceptable."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, critics have been staging anti-ULEZ protests, the latest in central London late last month.</p>

<p>Phil Elliott, 59, a haulage industry driver who has long campaigned against aspects of London's road-charging schemes, has been spearheading opposition, largely through Facebook.</p>

<p>He told AFP the new toll is the final straw for many and predicts growing civil disobedience in Britain, emulating the so-called yellow jackets protests seen in France.</p>

<p>"Desperate times take desperate measures and unfortunately what you've got (is) people are getting desperate now and governments aren't listening," Elliott said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Before it gets too messy, people need to start listening."</p>

Legal battle looms over London's expanding vehicle pollution fee

<p>A Malayali expatriate in London has received a life sentence after strangling his wife and two young children, aged six and four. Saju Chelavalel, aged 52, was sentenced at Northampton Crown Court with a minimum term of 40 years for the murder of his partner, Anju Asok, and their two children, Jeeva and Janvi.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The body of the wife was discovered on the bedroom floor, while those of the children were found together on a double bed in a separate room.</p>

<p>The tragic incident occurred on December 15 last year when all three victims were discovered with severe injuries at an apartment in Petherton Court, Kettering, Northamptonshire. Saju’s wife Anju used to work as an NHS nurse.</p>

<p>Following the killings, the murderer was then arrested from his house by police officials. A recently released video shows the moment when the police officials tasered and arrested the man. In the body-worn video footage released by Northamptonshire Police, Chelavalel can be seen urging the police to shoot him at his Kettering residence.</p>

<p>The United Kingdom’s Metropolitan Police, on Monday (June 26) named a major suspect in the decades-old investigation of the Stephen Lawrence murder and admitted making too many mistakes in the initial investigation. The name of the new suspect emerged following a BBC investigation which found that the Met police “seriously mishandled key inquiries” related to Matthew White, which the report said was central to the case.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is the case about?</strong></h2>

<p>Stephen Lawrence, a Black teenager was murdered in a reportedly racially motivated attack in south-east London in April 1993. It is said to be the UK’s most notorious racist killing while the failure of the first police investigation also&nbsp;prompted a public inquiry into the Met police which found that they were institutionally racist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lawrence, who was 18 at the time, is said to have been stabbed to death by a “gang of young white men,” as per BBC. The UK-based media outlet also reported that the five prime suspects became widely known after the murder while the public inquiry said there were “five or six” attackers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The newly named suspect, Matthew White, was publicly named in 2011 for the first time at the trial of David Norris and Gary Dobson. The duo had been given life sentences for Lawrence’s murder in 2012, while the other three suspects – Luke Knight and brothers Neil and Jamie Acourt were, acquitted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Matthew White is now the sixth suspect named following the BBC investigation. White, who died in August 2021, at the age of 50, first appeared on the police radar after he was presented&nbsp;as a witness related to the case for Norris and Dobson in 2011.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new investigation by BBC finds that White was central to the case. Initially, he was known as Witness K and was granted an alias despite never really cooperating with police said the UK-based media outlet.&nbsp;</p>

BBC’s investigation also found that when the relative was eventually traced by the police 20 years later,&nbsp;the relative said that White had admitted to being present during the attack.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This was in addition to another witness back in 2000 who reportedly said that White had admitted to being a part of the attack. The media report citing evidence also said that White’s alibi was false and that police surveillance photos of White showed a resemblance to witness accounts of an unidentified fair-haired attacker. &nbsp;</p>

The name of the new suspect emerged following a BBC investigation which found that the Met police “seriously mishandled key inquiries” related to Matthew White, which the report said was central to the case. What is the case about? Stephen Lawrence, a Black teenager was murdered in a reportedly racially motivated attack in south-east London in April 1993. It is said to be the UK’s most notorious racist killing while the failure of the first police investigation also prompted a public inquiry into the Met police which found that they were institutionally racist. An inquiry into the police investigation found that it had been “marred by a combination of professional incompetence, institutional racism and a failure of leadership”. Lawrence, who was 18 at the time, is said to have been stabbed to death by a “gang of young white men,” as per BBC. The UK-based media outlet also reported that the five prime suspects became widely known after the murder while the public inquiry said there were “five or six” attackers. The newly named suspect, Matthew White, was publicly named in 2011 for the first time at the trial of David Norris and Gary Dobson. The duo had been given life sentences for Lawrence’s murder in 2012, while the other three suspects – Luke Knight and brothers Neil and Jamie Acourt were, acquitted. Who is Matthew White and what did the investigation find? Matthew White is now the sixth suspect named following the BBC investigation. White, who died in August 2021, at the age of 50, first appeared on the police radar after he was presented as a witness related to the case for Norris and Dobson in 2011. The new investigation by BBC finds that White was central to the case. Initially, he was known as Witness K and was granted an alias despite never really cooperating with police said the UK-based media outlet. BBC’s investigation also found that when the relative was eventually traced by the police 20 years later, the relative said that White had admitted to being present during the attack. This was in addition to another witness back in 2000 who reportedly said that White had admitted to being a part of the attack.
