<h2><strong>Rigging the elections&nbsp;&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>The investigation into the issue was prompted by James Hardy, the deputy returning officer for the vote who wrote a letter to the review committee accusing Ghose, an Old Etonian, of one of “the most astonishing acts of electoral malpractice I have seen”.</p>

<p>Reports state that when polls closed around 6 pm on Wednesday last week, Ghose, who was acting as chief returning officer for the vote, allegedly accessed the spreadsheet on which votes were stored.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The results were to be announced on Friday but after allegations of voter fraud appeared, the Union released a statement confirming the delay in the publication of the final outcome. It cited a "potential irregularity in the electoral process" as the reason for the delay.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Ghose's election victory&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>In March, Ghose defeated David Eagleson with the poll plank of a “better and bolder union” in a landslide victory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“I’m delighted to have had such overwhelming support from the members. I’ve been given a mandate to deliver and I will do exactly that," said Ghose after the result.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Conservative Party has said that four people were disciplined over the event, but has not named them. The infamous lockdown parties at the Tory party’s headquarters were organised by the campaign team for Shaun Bailey, who was running for London mayor at the time the video was filmed.</p>

<p>Notably, a spokesperson for Mallet who was also the campaign director for the Conservative Party’s candidate in 2021 said that he did not send out the invitation himself and it was sent by an administrator, reported BBC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The invitation procured by BBC was also released a day after the Mirror released a video which is said to be that of the Tory staff drinking and dancing. The UK’s Metropolitan Police has since said that they are in the midst of assessing the video.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though the Daily Mirror provided still images from the footage, Bailey himself is not visible in the film. He had earlier apologised for attending the party. According to BBC, Bailey said that the event “turned into something” after he had left and claimed he was “very upset about the video” as he had “never seen it before”.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the lockdown, London was placed under Tier 2 Covid restrictions, which bar people from socialising indoors, except with members of their household or a support bubble.</p>

<p>According to Indian media reports, the&nbsp;student was identified by a cousin of Tejaswini in Hyderabad, Vijay, who also said that one of those accused was a Brazilian man and had moved into the shared accommodation, where she&nbsp;lived with her friends, less than a week ago. According to the Metropolitan Police, she died on the spot.</p>

<p>According to a statement by the police in London, a 23-year-old man located in Harrow was arrested at 6:00 pm (local time)&nbsp;after the incident on suspicion of murder, while another 24-year-old man and woman aged 23 were arrested on suspicion of murder at the scene.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report mentioned that in a letter, seen by the outlet, Mark Rowley, who is the Met's chief officer, said that an order will be issued to his officers not to attend thousands of calls they get every year to deal with mental health incidents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter was reportedly sent on May 24 to health and social care services, with a deadline of August 31. After the deadline, the new scheme will come into force.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Met chief believes the change is necessary as officers are being sidetracked from their primary mission of combating crime, and patients who require medical professionals are being let down when a police officer attends instead.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the letter, Sir Mark stated that it takes over 23 hours on average from the time someone is detained under the Mental Health Act until they are given over to medical care.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But BBC has reported that mental health charity Mind raised concerns over the plan and Zoe Billingham said the proposals could create a "vacuum". Billingham was previously Her Majesty's Inspector of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He writes that his officers spend more than 10,000 hours per month on "what is principally&nbsp;a health matter," and that police and other social services are "collectively failing patients" by not ensuring&nbsp;they receive appropriate help, as well as failing Londoners more broadly due to the impact on police resources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He mentions in the letter that Humberside Police's right care, right person (RCRP) strategy, ensured that mental health calls were handled by medical professionals rather than officers.</p>

<p>As quoted by news reports, part of the letter mentioned: "It is important to stress the urgency of implementing RCRP in London. Every day that we permit the status quo to remain we are collectively failing patients and are not setting officers up to succeed. In fact, we are failing Londoners twice.</p>

<p>"We are failing them first by sending police officers, not medical professionals, to those in a mental health crisis, and expecting them to do their best in circumstances where they are not the right people to be dealing with the patient," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We are failing Londoners a second time by taking large amounts of officer time away from preventing and solving crime, as well as dealing properly with victims, in order to fill gaps for others," it further added.&nbsp;</p>

Royal Mail parent sinks into red on costly UK strikes

<p>Indian author and philanthropist Sudha Murthy recently described her awkward encounter with an immigration officer during her visit to the United Kingdom. She spoke about how an immigration officer refused to believe her when she filled in her residential address in London as 10 Downing Street, where her son-in-law and current British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak lives.</p>

<p>She shared the story during an appearance at Indian Hindi-language stand-up comedy TV show, <em>The Kapil Sharma Show</em>.&nbsp;</p>

<p>10 Downing Street, which is the official residence and office of the UK prime minister, is currently home to Rishi Sunak. The first Indian-origin prime minister is married to Sudha Murthy’s daughter Akshata Murthy.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Once when I had gone, they asked me my residential address. ‘Where are you staying in London?’ My elder sister was with me and I thought should I write ‘10 Downing Street’,” said the Indian philanthropist. She also spoke about how even though her son also lived in the UK at the time, she couldn’t recall his complete address.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“But I finally wrote 10 Downing Street,” she added. “The fellow [the immigration officer] looked at me and said ‘Are you joking?!’” To which she responded, “Nahi, sachchi bolti hu [No, I am telling you the truth].”</p>

<p>She also went on to point out how no one believes that a 72-year-old, “simple lady” can be the mother-in-law of the PM.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a video that went viral last month, Murthy was heard saying, “I made my husband a businessman. My daughter made her husband the Prime Minister of the UK."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The reason is the glory of the wife. See how a wife can change a husband. But I could not change my husband,” she went on to say.</p>

<p>Sudha Murthy is the wife of NR Narayana Murthy, the co-founder of Indian IT giant Infosys. She is also the Infosys Foundation chairperson.</p>

<p>Murthy, who was recently awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, also recalled another incident where she was brushed aside by two business class passengers because of her simple apparel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On the show, she also recalled a separate incident and&nbsp;being called “cattle class”.</p>

<p>She&nbsp;overheard the passengers say, “What do these economy class people know of Business Class?” She immediately confronted them and asked them what is this “cattle class” and during the show, went on to criticise this mentality which equates class with the amount of money a person has.&nbsp;<br />

Using the pretext of violence while I was inside the jail, they have assumed the role of judge, jury and executioner. The plan now is to humiliate me by putting Bushra Begum (Khan's wife) in jail, and using some sedition law to keep me inside for next 10 years."</p>

<p>"This is a deliberate attempt to instill so much fear in people that when they come to arrest me tomorrow, people won't come out. <p>Islamabad High Court granted two-weeks bail to Imran Khan which will end on 17 May.&nbsp;Khan said that he will fight for Haqeeqi Azaadi [rightfull freedom] till the "last drop of my blood because for me death is preferable than to be enslaved by these assortments of crooks."</p>

As quoted by The Guardian, a spokesperson for the House of Commons said: "We are aware that the clock dials on the Elizabeth Tower were temporarily displaying incorrect time on Wednesday afternoon." The spokesperson added that clock mechanics worked quickly to rectify the issue and the clock is now "functioning as normal". A disturbing video is making rounds on social media. It shows officers pursuing a man holding the two dogs, and an officer is heard telling the owner they need to assess the dogs and him. The dogs can be seen barking at several armed policemen, as the man turned to walk away from the officers. The man was then reportedly pursued by seven officers who told him to come back. The situation seemingly became heated, and the man was tasered to the floor, while the animals were shot dead.

<p>Dozens of commuters scrambled outside after the windows were destroyed because they were afraid to stay inside.</p>

<p>The Mirror was informed by one of the terrified British passengers who was stranded inside the carriage that the carriages started to fill with smoke as the doors would not open.</p>

<p>According to Jake Sharp, who spoke to the Mirror, the only reason people were able to flee was because of the presence of workers on the station who were able to break windows with their tools.</p>

<p>They claimed that the atmosphere inside the carriages was "turning into hysteria" as they filled with smoke and the driver failed to provide any information, leaving the terrified crowds in the dark as they watched other passengers exit the train from the opposite platform and leave the station.</p>

<p>"There was a smell of smoke on the train. The train went down about five carriages into the tunnel and stopped, the train on the opposite side pulled in and people were running to get off the platform," sharp said.</p>

<p>Later, British Transport Police confirmed that a faulty train was probably to blame for the incident.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It tweeted: "We received a report of a faulty train at #ClaphamCommon shortly before 6pm this evening, and we are aware of a video showing passengers trying to leave the train.&nbsp;The issue is believed to have been caused by brake dust which can often be confused with burning."</p>

<p>There was no sign of a fire, according to the London Fire Brigade, who confirmed this to the Mirror.</p>

<p>A spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a report of smoke issuing from a train at Clapham Common Underground Station this evening (May 5).</p>
