A major health union has accepted the government's enhanced wage offer for NHS staff, in a decision that may cause unions to disagree on whether to continue going on strike for higher pay.&nbsp;The agreement agreed by all 12 health unions and the health secretary, Steve Barclay, last month has been approved by GMB members who work in the UK's&nbsp;NHS by a vote of 56 per cent&nbsp;to 44 per cent.

The NHS continues to prepare for a new nursing strike on Sunday as the GMB made its decision just hours after the plan was rejected by another union, Unite.

This&nbsp;indicates that the deal has been accepted by two of the major NHS-related unions, including Unison and the unions that represent midwives and physiotherapists.&nbsp;But two other unions – Unite and the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) – have rejected it, as have those representing podiatrists and radiographers, reported The Guardian.

The NHS Staff Council, which represents all 12 unions, will meet on Tuesday to discuss and vote on the enhanced offer for both last year and this year.

The electoral college mechanism used by the staff council allocates votes according to the size of each union's membership. According to insiders in the unions who spoke to The guardian,&nbsp;the system and the decisions made thus far by the unions make it likely that the council will vote to approve the agreement.&nbsp;

But if Unite continues to strike for a better NHS deal and the RCN receives a renewed legal mandate from a vote of its members, that could cause a rift in the coalition of NHS unions.

The London-based Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital expressed "serious concerns" regarding whether it will be able to care for its patients over the weekend, many of whom are very ill. In an effort to ensure patient safety, the hospital&nbsp;declared a "business continuity incident" on Friday.

For the first time since they started striking in December, tens of thousands of RCN nurses are anticipated to stage a 28-hour strike&nbsp;from 8 p.m. on Sunday until midnight on Monday with no exemptions for life-or-death areas of care like A&amp;E and intensive care.

“We respect the right of our staff to take part in lawful industrial action. But after exhausting all options, at the moment we have serious concerns over how we will safely staff our hospital during the strike”,&nbsp;Mat Shaw, Great Ormond Street’s chief executive told The Guardian.

On May 2, the RCN was scheduled to go on strike until 8 p.m. But on Thursday, the top court in London ruled that the union's planned strike was unlawful since its mandate, which was determined by a vote last autumn, had ended on May 1.

An Indian citizen has been arrested in Britain by Scotland Yard for allegedly funding the banned terrorist outfit Hezbollah. The nabbed individual has been identified as 66-year-old&nbsp;Sundar Nagarajan and hailed from Madurai, a district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

According to a statement released by the Metropolitan Police, Nagarajan, also known as&nbsp;&nbsp;Kasiviswanathan Naga and Nagarajan Sundar Poongulam was presented before the court where he was denied bail.

"Sundar Nagarajan, (27.08.57) of Hayes UB3, was taken into police custody before appearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court this afternoon for commencement of extradition proceedings," read the statement, adding that he is scheduled to appear for the next court hearing on April 25.&nbsp;

Nagarajan was arrested in West London by the officers from the National Extradition Unit,&nbsp;following an international arrest warrant. He could be extradited to the US where he faces charges of laundering money and supplying it to&nbsp;Hezbollah.&nbsp;

His arrest came hot on the heels of&nbsp;Met’s Counter Terrorism Command arresting&nbsp;one Nazem Ahmad - a wealthy art collector, accused of terrorist financing and money laundering. According to reports,&nbsp;Nagarajan was Ahmad's international accountant and used numerous companies as a front to launder money for the terror organisation.&nbsp;

The Scottish National Party's treasurer was arrested by police on Tuesday as part of an investigation into the finances of the governing pro-independence party that has damaged its image and undermined its new leader.

Police Scotland said a 71-year-old man had been arrested as a suspect in its ongoing inquiry. The party's leader said the arrested man was the SNP treasurer Colin Beattie.

The investigation is looking at what happened to more than 600,000 pounds ($750,000) raised by Scottish independence campaigners in 2017, which was supposed to have been ring-fenced but may have been used for other purposes.

The arrest comes as the SNP, Scotland's dominant political party, faces deepening questions about its governance and finances. Opposition parties said the party was mired in scandal and struggling to govern Scotland.

They recorded the entire 'castration' process on their cameras and later broadcast it on the website, charging money from subscribers for viewing the content. Gustavson has been charged with five counts of 'Grievous Bodily Harm' (GBH). He is also being tried for producing and distributing an inappropriate image of a child and possessing criminal property. Baroness Casey was appointed in October 2021 to look into the Met internal misconduct system.&nbsp;

This report is an effort to review the Met police after the horrific incident when two years ago in March 2021, one of the department's officer Sarah Everard was abducted, raped and murdered by a serving Metropolitan Police Officer, who was later sentenced to whole life imprisonment for his crime.&nbsp;

As per the report, there are people in the Met with racist attitudes. It underscores that Black, Asian and ethnic minority officers and staff are more likely to experience racism, discrimination and bullying at their hands.&nbsp;

"Discrimination is often ignored, and complaints are likely to be turned against Black, Asian and ethnic minority officers. Many do not think it is worth reporting. Black officers are 81% more likely to be in the misconduct system than their White counterparts. The organisation has failed to significantly improve the recruitment and retention of Black officers at all levels. This is particularly true of Black and ethnic minority women," the report stated.&nbsp;

Casey review also pointed out that Black Londoners in particular remain over-policed and are more likely 
to be stopped and searched, handcuffed, batoned and Tasered, are overrepresented in many serious crimes.&nbsp;

It adds that when Black Londoners are victims of crime, they are less satisfied with the service they receive than other Londoners.&nbsp;

The Met police assessment was done by engaging current and former Met personnel and other stakeholders and reviewing relevant Met internal policies. Moreover, it also included polling over 1,200 Londoners, conducting surveys of 6,751 current and former personnel and listening to the voices of those who have faced adverse consequences inside the service.&nbsp;

The review report touches upon a series of incidents and scandals involving the Met police. It underlines that the public confidence in Met police over the last few years has declined and in some communities it has hit rock bottom.

Black and Mixed ethnic groups have consistently lower trust and confidence in the Met, frequently scoring around 10-20% lower than average on trust and belief in fairness. LGBT+ community also has low trust in the police.&nbsp;

It concludes that the Met has become disconnected from Londoners and their consent is largely assumed. "Londoners’ voices are missing from London policing," the report states.&nbsp;

In comparison to the three months ending in December, the unemployment rate was steady at 3.7 per cent in the three months ending in January, according to a statement from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

Without bonuses, wages increased by 6.5 percent, but when inflation is factored in, wages fell by 3.5 per cent.

"Although the inflation rate has come down a little, it's still outstripping earnings growth, meaning real pay continues to fall," said ONS economic statistics director Darren Morgan told AFP.&nbsp;

The first day of a three-day salary strike by UK hospital physicians began on Monday. The walkout is part of a weeklong labour action planned to coincide with the budget that will also see teachers, railway workers, and public officials walk out.

The economy currently has more than 1.1 million open positions, the ONS also disclosed on Tuesday.&nbsp;

"The jobs market remains strong, but inflation remains too high," Hunt said in reaction to Tuesday's data.

In part due to a lack of EU employees after Brexit and a record number of people classified as long-term unwell, the government is trying to fill vacancies.

Although annual UK inflation has decreased recently, it is still higher than 10 per cent,&nbsp;or five times the Bank of England's goal rate.

Two of the biggest icebergs are being tracked by British scientists as the frozen blocks continue drifting towards areas where there are chances of it affecting fishing, wildlife and shipping.

These icebergs, which recently, broke off from Antarctica, may take decades to melt and wither away. One of the icebergs, named 'A81', was photographed by a group of researchers when they were flying off the Halley base in the UK. The iceberg 'A81' is said to be as large as Greater London.

Another group of researchers sailed around A76a, which is bigger than the size of Cornwall. This giant frozen block is not just similar in size to the English county, which is spread over an area of over 3,000 sq km, but also in shape as the iceberg is long and thin.

Prof Geraint Tarling, who was present at the Royal Research Ship Discovery, took the opportunity to look into the iceberg as it floated out of the Weddell Sea, Antarctica into the South Atlantic.

"It was directly in our path as we sailed home so we took 24 hours out to go around it," said the biological oceanographer, while speaking to BBC News.

"We got in quite close in some places, and had a really good view of it. We collected water from around the berg using special non-contaminated pipes under the ship, so we've got lots of samples to study,” he added.

The British Antarctic Survey scientist stated that tabular or huge flat-topped icebergs have a major influence on the environment - both productive and disruptive.

The icebergs, while melting down, will produce huge volumes of fresh water into the sea, which can make it difficult for few organisms to function.

The melt will also release the mineral dust which was incorporated into the ice when it was connected to the glacier scraping along Antarctica's rock bed. The dust contains nutrients which will spur life in the open ocean.

"If it does become grounded, our major concern is break-up and the impact of (smaller) icebergs on vessel movements in the area," Dr Mark Belchier, the director of fisheries and environment with the government for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, explained.

"Although the tourist season is coming to an end, our fisheries operate during the winter months so it may impact on their operations. It does have the potential to cause localised issues for some of our wildlife, although that's likely to be less of an issue if it breaks up over winter when most animals can forage over greater distances and don't have to keep returning to land to feed young - or have moved away from the island completely,” he added.

He was three years old when he was diagnosed with a form of Autism Spectrum Disorder which meant he was unable to speak until he was 11. But he overcame illiteracy at age 18, his bio on the varsity's official website highlights. Born and raised in Clapham, South London, Arday faced all barriers that people from lower socio-economic backgrounds, and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities face when trying to build careers. He even proved therapists wrong who had predicted he "would spend his adult life in assisted living and require lifelong support."

Set to assume his new post, he intends to use the platform to inspire more people from under-represented backgrounds into higher education, building on the university’s many initiatives in this area.

His personal determination is being hailed on social media too. "Huge congratulations to Jason Arday the youngest ever black professor at Cambridge! Emphasising on the changes in the party, Sir Keir Starmer was quoted as saying in a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-64640069">BBC report</a>, "We are not going back, and that is why Jeremy Corbyn will not stand as a Labour candidate at the next general election."

This was followed by a Twitter tirade by Corbyn. "Ever since I was elected as a Labour MP 40 years ago, I have fought on behalf of my community for a more equal, caring and peaceful society," he underlined in a long note shared on Twitter. Poverty, rising rents, healthcare crisis, safety of refugees, and fate of the planet - he counted the issues in focus during his stint as Islington North MP.&nbsp;

Keir Starmer's statement "about my future is a flagrant attack on the democratic rights of Islington North Labour Party members," he further wrote, and added: "It is up to them - not party leaders - to decide who their party leader should be. Any attempt to block my candidacy is a denial of due process, and should be opposed by anybody who believes in democracy."&nbsp;

The UK is faced with "worst cost-of-living crisis in a generation", he insisted, terming Starmer's comments as diversionary tactics, taking his former party away from the goal of defeating the Conservatives.&nbsp;

The skyline of London at night may look very different from what it looks today as new rules have been drafted by the city authorities according to which skyscrapers will be required to dim their lights overnight.

The step will “cut light pollution and save energy”, as stated by the City of London Corporation, which is the governing body of the financial district.

After the new rules are adopted, the high-rise buildings in the Square Mile – the area in London where most of the high-rise buildings remain clustered – will be required to switch off unnecessary lights in the building after sunset.

The new buildings will have to compulsorily follow the rules. The authorities will encourage the existing buildings to adopt the policy, however, it won't be mandatory.

The authorities have introduced the rule as an increasing amount of evidence shows the light pollution's devastating impact on human health and biodiversity as well as the wasted energy.

What is the new policy?

The new policy has been stated in the 'Lighting Supplementary Planning Document', as reported by Britain’s Financial Times.

According to the plan, different curfews will be imposed on various ‘brightness zones’ across the capital. If the rule is implemented, businesses in heritage and residential areas will have to switch off lights at 10 pm and businesses in tourist and cultural areas will be allowed to keep the lights on till 11 pm.

In commercial areas, people are allowed to keep unnecessary lights on until midnight. City of London Corporation planning and transportation committee chairman Shravan Joshi said that currently, the document is under the process of consultation.

“The City is a unique place in which 24/7 business districts and busy transport hubs rub up against historic buildings and residential neighbourhoods,” he said.

"The strategy laid out in this document is aimed at ensuring an intelligent, sensitive approach to lighting which ensures the City is safe and accessible while protecting its historic character and the amenity of our residents,” Joshi added.
