The opening of a new Harry Potter store on London’s Oxford Street was met with protests by transgender rights supporters on Wednesday. Around 26 demonstrators gathered outside, holding signs reading “Protect Trans Lives” and “Stop Funding Trans Erasure”. They also used megaphones to chant slogans and urged fans queuing outside to reconsider supporting the franchise and its creator, J.K. Rowling.

A strong beam of light cutting the sky in half baffled Londoners over the weekend. It peered through the sky to an extreme height and appeared to be something straight out of science fiction, similar to an alien invasion movie. What people were seeing was one of the most powerful lasers on Earth and visible for kilometres. One Londoner explained that the light was emitting from the Danish Church in Regent’s Park. "This is apparently an art installation laser shining tonight in north London, & not The War of the Worlds," the person explained on X. So even though the light was not linked to any mystifying source, there was still something extremely fascinating about it. The artist behind the installation said that it was a modified military-grade laser system which emitted a high-intensity beam of light. During the tests, it was even "detected from the International Space Station", stationed 402 kilometres above Earth. The laser display appeared after sunset on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October.

Light installation by famous artist known for his work with light beams
The light which can be seen from space was the work of a British artist, Chris Levine, who has previously talked about his desire to use the laser beam to "make light, not war". He is known for his pioneering work with light and lasers, and works primarily at the intersection of light, optics, geometry, and sacred space. One of his most famous works is the Lightness of Being, a holographic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The other one is Equanimity, also a meditative, laser-scanned portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. He also has light sculptures and physical installations to his credit, like Light is LOVE, Geometry of Truth, etc.

A beam of blue light shot through somewhere in London and into the vastness of the night sky. It was so strong that it was even detectable from space. However, there is nothing mysterious about it, as the light was the work of a famous artist.

A pod of 27 pilot whales got lost and became stranded in the River Thames last week and were directed towards the sea in an operation that ran for six hours. Two of them died amid the rescue operation. The pod was spotted by Marine Pilots on September 17. After Port of London Authority officials learned about the whales, they alerted the public on September 18 and told them to stay away from the area to avoid hurting them or themselves.
Whales looked confused
The operation to help them return to sea proved cumbersome. The pilot whales, which appear similar to dolphins, looked visibly confused in the Thames. Port of London Authority harbour master Lyn Kindlen told The Times that "they were heading off in all different directions." Many vessels also move through the area, and halting them was not an option. With this in mind, as well as the distress among whales, the rescue team kept adjusting the plan and regularly assessed the animals.
Six-hour operation saved 25 whales
The operation was carried out slowly over the weekend of September 19. Crews with the British Divers Marine Life Rescue organization (BDMLR), Marine Pilots, and local authorities in Gravesham and Thurrock led the pilot whales out. The "carefully co-ordinated effort" started at 7 am with experts in eight boats. They started directing the whales towards the sea. It was a slow process since the pod comprised mother whales with calves who needed to rest. The crew covered 20 nautical miles over six hours and rescued 25 pilot whales. Two members of the pod died. One of them appeared unwell and washed up on the shore Friday. A second whale also reached the shore but managed to return to the water. However, officials said that it also likely died.
Thames River “not normal” environment for whales
Port of London Authority said in a report that the River Thames "isn’t a normal place to see them," especially such a large pod, as it is not a "normal environment." It added, "This is not an environment where they do well, and the worst-case scenario was that we would see a mass-stranding, with the whole pod eventually washing up on the foreshore and dying." Kindlen said it was "one of the most unusual and memorable operations" he had been involved in. "Herding a pod of lost pilot whales is not something I have ever done or thought I would end up doing!" He admitted that initially they thought that this might not end well. However, thankfully, they were able to save 25 of them.

River Thames is not an ideal environment for whales. If the pod had not been steered safely to the sea, a mass stranding would have occurred, leading to most of the animals dying. However, rescue teams safely steered them for over six hours, but two of them died.

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat took his centenary outreach tour to London, telling British Hindus that "Hindu" isn't a religion but a philosophy that embraces every path — atheists to polytheists included. Speaking at the "Celebration of Oneness" event, he said the goal of "Hindu Rashtra" is simply to show the world that diversity is natural and unity is truth, adding that conversion isn't needed since different paths lead to the same destination.

It was chaos at London Gatwick on Wednesday after nine flights preparing to land at the airport declared an emergency. The flights were forced to divert to other airports or enter holding patterns. The disruption affected hundreds of passengers, most of whom were coming from popular vacation spots. All of them declared a squawk 7700, the universal aviation transponder code used by pilots to signal a general in-flight emergency. The incident was triggered by a British Airways flight from Palma de Mallorca blocking a runway.
Affected flights at Gatwick
Flightradar24 confirmed that a total of 14 flights were diverted or circled over the airport before they could finally land at Gatwick after it reopened at about 1.30 am. According to reports, the affected flights were travelling from Tenerife, Valencia, Lanzarote, Rhodes and Athens in Greece, Bari and Rome in Italy, and Agadir in Morocco. They were diverted to London Luton, Stansted, Heathrow, and Birmingham airports. Those with the Flightradar24 app on their phones, would have received back-to-back squawk 7700 push notification alerts at the same time. Passengers shared accounts of what they knew on social media. One of them, travelling from Tenerife, wrote, "Still on the plane to see what’s happening next !! Hoping we can be flown back to Gatwick soon! It’s been a much longer flight from Tenerife than usual."
