Iran sentences two LGBT rights activists to death

A prominent non-governmental organisation (NGO) that advocates for LGBT rights has been banned by the Uganda government.

Sexual Minorities Uganda’s (SMUG)&nbsp;operations were halted with immediate effect for “operating illegally” in the East African country, Stephen Okello, who heads a government agency that regulates NGOs, said in a statement shared with Reuters on Saturday.

They said that SMUG had failed to register its name with the National Bureau for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) properly.

The group, however, criticised the order calling it a "clear witch hunt" by the government against LGBT Ugandans.

"This is a clear witch hunt rooted in systematic homophobia, fuelled by anti-gay and anti-gender movements," BBC quoted SMUG's director Frank Mugisha, who is a gay Ugandan activist, as saying.

He slammed the government for treating Uganda's LGBT members as second-class citizens and accused the officials of trying to erase their existence completely.

Homosexual relationships are illegal in Uganda, and they are a punishable offence. A person charged for “unnatural offences” is punished with up to life in prison.

Earlier, President Yoweri Museveni, who has been ruling since 1986, had described homosexuality in Uganda as an example of the West’s "social imperialism" in Africa.

In a 2016 interview to CNN, he called gay people "disgusting."

The reason to ban the operations of the advocacy group stems from SMUG's name itself.

The NGO acknowledged in a statement that it had tried to register with authorities in 2012, but the application was rejected because SMUG's full name was considered "undesirable."

Smug, since its establishment in 2004, has campaigned for LGBT rights in Uganda by promoting access to health services and supporting members of the community to live openly.

The action against SMUG also comes in the wake of a series of campaign run by it the NGO which as vocally criticised anti-gay speeches delivered by Ugandan politicians - including in the run up to national elections in 2021.

South Korea's capital Seoul celebrated its first pride parade in three years with thousands of citizens taking part in an LGBT festival in downtown.

State media Yonhap reported that approximately 13,000 people were estimated to have participated in the 'Seoul Queer Culture Festival'.

Showing his support for the community, Philip Goldberg, the US ambassador to South Korea also attended the festival.

Members of the LGBTQIA+ community are still harshly stigmatised and frequently exposed to hate speech and crimes, while views on sexual minorities in South Korea have gradually improved in recent years.

According to his check-up report, his levels of the male sex hormone androgen were below average. On the other hand, his levels of ovarian activity and female sex hormones were comparable to those reported in healthy adult women.

In the end, it was determined that Chen had both male and female reproductive organs.

Chen, who has identified as a man for&nbsp;33 years, found the outcome disconcerting. In June, he requested a procedure to remove his female reproductive organs.

According to NBC News, the state's public school districts have already started implementing policies and rules to prevent discussions of LGBTQ issues and identities in the classroom.

In one incident Orange County Classroom Teachers Association representatives have claimed school administrators verbally ordered them to take down pictures of their gay spouses from their desks and to remove LGBTQ safety stickers from classroom doors.

UAE's crackdown on homosexuality isn't new.

Recently, according to a report by state TV Al Ekhbariya, authorities in Saudi Arabia also seized rainbow-coloured toys and children's apparel on the grounds that they promote homosexuality. According to the report, representatives from the commerce ministry confiscated a variety of merchandise from stores in the capital, Riyadh, including hats, skirts, T-shirts, hair clips, and pencil bags.

Saudi Arabia and more than a dozen other nations have also outlawed Disney's most recent animated film, Lightyear, which depicts a same-sex kiss.

The executive order addresses "discriminatory legislative attacks against LGBTQI+ children and families, directing key agencies to protect families and children."

The order signed by Biden seeks to prevent the so-called "conversion therapy," boost health care programs against youth suicide, support LGBTQ foster families and protect against homelessness in the community.

A senior official was quoted by AFP as saying that the high profile intervention by Biden was aimed at countering an "onslaught of hateful... legislation that we're seeing in the states."

The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there had been more than 300 laws introduced at state level this year alone that infringe on LGBTQ people and their parents.

Among those invited to the White House were "kids and families from across the country who have been personally impacted by these discriminatory bills," the official said.

These included 18-year-old Javier Gomez, who gained renown as an activist while still at school in Florida and also joined Biden on the stage at the White House.&nbsp;

Recounting the bullying he suffered in school, he said an early teacher had been key in providing "the support I needed to understand my identity."

Canada&nbsp;announced Thursday a lifting of restrictions on blood donations by gay and bisexual men that dates back to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s.

Instead, donors will be screened for high-risk sexual behaviours, regardless of gender or sexuality.

"Under the new screening approach, Canadian Blood Services will introduce a sexual behaviour-based donor-screening questionnaire that will apply to all donors of blood and plasma," the health department said in a statement.

The policy change&nbsp;to be implemented by September marks "a significant milestone toward a more inclusive blood donation system," it said.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called it "good news for all Canadians," adding at a news conference: "Our blood supply will continue to be safe and we're doing away with a discriminatory blanket ban."

The move follows several changes to the blood donation regime over the past decade that saw deferral periods for donations by gay men progressively lowered from a lifetime ban to three months in 2019.

Google Play has pulled down an app made by Malaysian apps with a view to help members of LGBT community 'back to nature'. The app was reportedly found to have violated the platform's guidelines.

The app was released for the first time in 2016.

Malaysia government's Islamic Development Department recently promoted the app on Twitter. The department said that the app helped members of LGBTI community return to a state of so-called purity.&nbsp;

The ministry also said that the app has an e-book that details a gay man who "abandon", "homosexual behaviour".

“Whenever an app is flagged to us, we investigate against our Play store policies and if violations are found we take appropriate action to maintain a trusted experience for all.” said Google in a statement sent to The Guardian.

The app is no longer available on Google Play Store.

No immediate reaction from the Malaysian government was reported.

There is a surmise that such step are being taken by the government for electoral gains since elections are just around the corner.

According to critics, this wording could apply to older children as well.

Republicans counter that teachers and students can actually discuss these issues spontaneously and that the bill only forbids lessons on these topics from being included in school curricula.

A state court in Texas on Wednesday temporarily halted the child abuse investigation of a family providing medical treatment for its transgender 16-year-old, but allowed other investigations to continue under a contentious policy initiated last week by Gov. Greg Abbott.

Soon after, President Joe Biden issued his first comments on the Texas policy, calling it “a cynical and dangerous campaign targeting transgender children and their parents.” He said he had directed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to take steps “to keep transgender children in Texas and their families safe — putting the state of Texas on notice that their discriminatory actions put children’s lives at risk.”

The intervention by the court in Austin, the state capital, came in response to a lawsuit filed Tuesday by the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas and Lambda Legal on behalf of the parents of a transgender child who were being investigated for abuse by the Department of Family and Protective Services.

That inquiry immediately followed a directive by Abbott to conduct child abuse investigations when medically accepted treatments — including hormones or puberty-suppressing drugs, which doctors describe as gender-affirming care — are prescribed to transgender adolescents.

But the ruling Wednesday, a temporary restraining order by Judge Amy Clark Meachum, fell short of what the groups had asked the court to do: stop such child abuse investigations altogether. They argued that the governor’s directive and the investigations by the agency broadly violated the Texas Constitution and the constitutional rights of transgender youth, as well as of their parents, and were improperly issued under state law.

The court is set to consider those arguments March 11 and will decide whether to block the governor’s directive statewide, which would stop all related investigations or prosecutions.

Abbott’s directive followed an opinion by the state attorney general, Ken Paxton, that certain medical treatments for transgender children could be considered child abuse. The moves have had an immediate and chilling effect on the families of transgender youth in Texas, forcing some to consider halting recommended courses of medical treatment or even to leave the state. Investigations into other families have already begun, lawyers said.

The court’s ruling applied only to the family that brought the suit — identified as John and Jane Doe, the parents, and Mary Doe, their daughter — and a licensed psychologist in Houston, Dr. Megan Mooney, who is required to report suspected child abuse under Texas law. Mooney has a practice that includes transgender patients.

The court found that the family would “suffer irreparable injury” unless the state was immediately restrained from enforcing the governor’s directive. Jane Doe, an employee of the family protective agency, was placed on administrative leave after Abbott’s order. Investigators have already interviewed the family at home and sought medical records related to Mary.

The family members, Meachum wrote, “face the imminent and ongoing deprivation of their constitutional rights, the potential loss of necessary medical care, and the stigma attached to being the subject of an unfounded child abuse investigation.” She blocked the state from taking any adverse employment action against Jane Doe.

And in the case of Mooney, the judge wrote that, if she followed the governor’s directive, she would have been forced to choose between criminal prosecution for not reporting abuse, or potential civil liability for not treating patients “in accordance with professional standards and loss of licensure for failing to follow her professional ethics.”

Though the ruling was limited, lawyers for the plaintiffs argued that the message had been clear: The state’s investigation had “put the Doe family at incredible harm,” said Karen Loewy, senior counsel for Lambda Legal. “It would be pretty unconscionable for the agency to continue investigations when that’s the assessment,” she added.

Loewy said she thought the state was unlikely to appeal the temporary restraining order given its limited scope. “It would be extraordinary, and incredibly punitive for the state to appeal when at the moment the only relief is to the parties,” she said Wednesday evening.

Soon after, the state, represented by the attorney general’s office, appealed the ruling.

A spokesperson for the governor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

But in a call with reporters earlier Wednesday, the top strategist for Abbott’s reelection campaign, David Carney, said that being against medical treatment for transgender children, and treating it as child abuse, was a “winning issue” for the governor. Abbott is running for a third term in November.

“That is a 75 to 80% winner,” Carney said. “This is why the Democrats across the country are out of touch.”

It has no basis in science or in health care practices. Too many Canadians have undergone conversion therapy and have had to live with its harmful effects. Most countries have stopped practising the therapy but there are still many institutions that continue to resort to similar methods in order to convert gay people. The American Medical Association has deemed the practice is “harmful and ineffective”.

As part of its ongoing crackdown on media outlets and rights groups, Russia has declared the main organisation defending LGBTQ rights to be a "foreign agent" on Monday.

She was charged earlier this year after attending a 2018 religious event dressed in women's clothes, and faces up to three years in jail or a fine if convicted.

She is also facing separate charges of obstructing and threatening a public servant, which she denies.

The entrepreneur said Australian officials have kept in constant communication with her, but did not reveal how she travelled to the country from Thailand early this month.

Canberra's department of home affairs said it does not comment on individual cases because of privacy concerns.

The 36-year-old said she fled to Thailand earlier this year because she "was abused and treated inhumanely" by religious officials in Malaysia.

She was arrested by Thai authorities in September over an invalid passport and later released on bail.

"The decision to run away was my last decision for me, because I did not feel happiness. (I was) not free," she said.

Sajat also said she will not return to Malaysia because "people like me are abused and intimidated" there.

"Many LGBTIQ people have migrated and uprooted their lives because of the increasingly repressive environment in Malaysia," she said.

The European Union is set to take legal action against Poland for setting up “LGBT-free” zones in many places.

These zones have been set up by some local authorities.

The EU reportedly said that LGBT+ rights must be respected by all its member states, even though Poland’s ruling party has initiated a series of homophobic policies to lead the country.

The European Union is set to take legal action against Poland for setting up “LGBT-free” zones in many places. These zones have been set up by some local authorities.

The EU reportedly said that LGBT+ rights must be respected by all its member states, even though Poland’s ruling party has initiated a series of homophobic policies to lead the country. In March, Poland banned same-sex couples from adopting children. Following this, over 100 towns declared themselves “LGBT-free” zones. Reuters news agency quoted a EU official as saying that they were checking the possibility of any violations of “EU treaties” in the process of creating those zones. The assessment is currently underway. Another official confirmed to Reuters that they’re studying the issue. Officially known as an “infringement procedure”, the legal action would challenge Poland to eliminate the zones. In case the country fails to comply, they could face hefty fines.
