New Delhi: India has firmly rejected Chinese comments on the Union Territory of Ladakh and New Delhi’s formal identification of 28 places and geographical features on official maps, declaring that no amount of “denial” can change the established fact of India’s sovereignty over the territory. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “It is reiterated that the UT of Ladakh is an integral and inalienable part of India. No amount of denial by the Chinese side can change this established fact.” He added that the Ministry of Home Affairs press release on the matter was self-explanatory. The announcement, made earlier this month, stated that the 28 places and features located in the Union Territory of Ladakh had been identified with standard place and feature names on the official map of the Survey of India. This was done in consultation with the Union Territory of Ladakh and local stakeholders. “Identifying these places formally on the Survey of India map of UT of Ladakh is aimed at facilitating their accurate recognition and better awareness among the public at large,” the spokesperson noted. The Chinese Foreign Ministry had earlier objected to the exercise. Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China had never “recognized” Union Territory of Ladakh. The 2019 reorganisation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir created the Union Territory of Ladakh as a distinct administrative entity. The list of 28 features includes peaks, mountains, passes, glaciers, valleys, rivers, lakes and land areas, including in China occupied Ladakh-Aksai Chin. Among them are locations such as Gogra and Hot Spring, sites associated with the 2020 military standoff along the Line of Actual Control, as well as culturally resonant names linked to Buddhist heritage and historical figures. The exercise follows a similar standardisation of names for places in Arunachal Pradesh earlier this year, which is part of New Delhi’s aim of official mapping and public awareness.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has arrived in Leh, beginning the Ladakh leg of his two-day India visit. This is Gor’s first visit to the Union Territory, putting the strategically important region in focus. His trip comes as India and the US continue to deepen ties on defence, trade and regional security. The visit is also being closely watched because of Ladakh’s sensitive location near India’s borders with China and Pakistan.

Jammu and Kashmir marked the 7th anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370 and Article 35A under heavy security across the Valley.

While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) celebrated August 5 as a landmark in Jammu and Kashmir's integration and development, opposition parties including the National Conference (NC) and the People's Democratic Party (PDP) observed the day as a "Black Day", demanding the restoration of statehood and special constitutional status.

Security was tightened across Srinagar, with checkpoints reinforced and restrictions imposed to prevent protests. Opposition leaders accused authorities of denying them the democratic right to demonstrate, while BJP leaders highlighted improvements in security, tourism, and economic activity since 2019.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described August 5, 2019, as the beginning of a transformative chapter for Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, emphasizing peace, prosperity, and development over the past seven years.

India has achieved a historic engineering milestone as the Zojila Tunnel, located on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, successfully reached its final breakthrough point this June. This 13.15-kilometer engineering marvel—set to become the world’s longest single-tube bi-directional road tunnel at high altitude—will finally provide reliable, all-weather connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and Ladakh. By bypassing the treacherous, snow-prone Zojila Pass, this project will slash travel times, bolster national security, and integrate the remote Ladakh region into the national economy year-round.

Ladakh is home to several high-altitude natural wonders, but few are as captivating as Pangong Tso. Located in the Changthang region at an elevation of approximately 4,350 metres, this 134-kilometre-long lake is widely famous for a distinct visual phenomenon. The water frequently shifts shades, moving from pale turquoise to deep indigo and even reddish tones within a single day. If you are planning a Himalayan road trip, here is the exact science behind why this saltwater lake constantly changes colour.
A unique mineral and saline composition
Unlike standard freshwater mountain lakes, Pangong Tso is an endorheic basin. This means the lake has no natural outlet or river drain. Over thousands of years, glacial water has evaporated, leaving behind a heavy concentration of salt and minerals like magnesium and calcium. This brackish, mineral-rich water interacts directly with sunlight. The suspended particles scatter the light waves differently than pure freshwater, producing vivid shades of green and bright turquoise depending on the depth and salinity of the specific section.
Sunlight angles and thin atmospheric clarity
The extreme altitude plays a major role in the visual effect. Sitting 4,350 metres above sea level, the lake exists in a very thin atmosphere with virtually no industrial pollution or thick dust. This absolute clarity allows raw, unfiltered sunlight to hit the water. As the sun moves across the sky, the angle of refraction constantly shifts. By midday, the direct overhead sun turns the lake a deep electric blue, while the low-angle light at sunset frequently creates a surreal copper or reddish reflection on the surface.
Cloud cover and surface reflections
The surrounding environment acts as a massive natural mirror. Pangong Tso stretches across the border, with one-third lying in India and two-thirds in Tibet. When the sky is entirely clear, the lake perfectly reflects the brilliant blue atmosphere above. However, sudden cloud cover instantly blocks the light, shifting the water to a dull, steely grey tone. Additionally, wind patterns ripple the surface, breaking the light reflection and causing different sections of the massive lake to display contrasting colours simultaneously. Reaching this destination requires driving across the high-altitude Chang La Pass. Visitors must secure an Inner Line Permit and pay an environmental fee of roughly Rs 400 before entering the protected area. Travellers should plan their trip between June and September for the sharpest colour transformations and clearest Himalayan skies.

Every year, thousands of travellers drive through the high-altitude roads of Leh and Ladakh. Most itineraries strictly focus on popular spots like Pangong Lake and Khardung La. However, the Union Territory holds several remote areas that offer quiet landscapes and distinct local cultures. If you are planning a Himalayan road trip this summer, here are three lesser-known locations to add to your route.
Turtuk: The last northern village
Located roughly 205 kilometres from Leh in the Nubra Valley, Turtuk sits at an altitude of approximately 2,900 metres. According to regional historical records, this village was under Pakistani control until the Indian Army reclaimed it during the 1971 war. Opened to civilian tourists only in 2010, it offers a rare look at Balti culture. Visitors can walk through vast apricot orchards and view the Karakoram mountain range on clear days. A standard homestay here costs roughly Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,000 per night, providing a direct source of income for the local farming community.
Hanle: India's first Dark Sky Reserve
Hanle is positioned at an altitude of 4,500 metres in the cold desert of the Changthang region. According to a recent notification by the Department of Science and Technology, the Hanle region is now officially India's first Dark Sky Reserve. This status strictly controls artificial light pollution, making it one of the best locations globally for astrotourism. The Indian Astronomical Observatory operates a massive gamma-ray telescope here, utilising the clear, dry air. Tourists require a special Inner Line Permit to visit this border area, and accommodation remains limited to basic local guesthouses.
Umling La Pass: The highest motorable road
Travellers often mistakenly assume Khardung La is the highest mountain pass. However, the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) recently completed the Umling La Pass, connecting the villages of Chisumle and Demchok near the Line of Actual Control. Standing at an extreme elevation of 5,798 metres (19,024 feet), it holds the Guinness World Record for the highest motorable road. The oxygen levels at this altitude are roughly 50 per cent lower than at sea level. Medical guidelines advise visitors to spend a maximum of 20 minutes at the summit to prevent acute mountain sickness. Exploring these remote sections of Ladakh requires careful logistical planning. Travellers must spend at least two days acclimatising in Leh before moving to higher altitudes. Always carry spare fuel and physical cash, as digital payment networks frequently fail in these border regions.

Srinagar: A wave of excitement and optimism is sweeping across Kashmir and Ladakh as the much-awaited Zojila Tunnel nears completion, promising to revolutionise travel, tourism, and trade in the region. Residents, tourism stakeholders, and visitors alike are eagerly awaiting the opening of the strategic tunnel, which is expected to significantly improve connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the Ladakh region. Tourism operators in Sonmarg, one of Kashmir’s premier tourist destinations, believe the tunnel will usher in a new era for the sector by making travel faster, safer, and more convenient. The improved road connectivity is expected to boost tourist arrivals and open up several new destinations for visitors exploring both Kashmir and Ladakh. With the opening of the tunnel, tourists visiting Sonmarg will be able to access scenic destinations across the Zojila Pass, including Minamarg, Drass, and the picturesque Mushkoh Valley in Ladakh, and return the same day if desired. Similarly, visitors staying in Kargil will be able to make day trips to Sonmarg, creating new tourism circuits and increasing visitor movement across the region. Local tourism stakeholders in Sonmarg have welcomed the development, expressing hope that easier access to previously remote destinations will attract larger numbers of tourists in the coming years. ''The opening of the Sonmarg-Ladakh tunnel will have a transformative impact on the tourism industry. It will significantly boost tourist arrivals in the region and create new opportunities for local communities associated with tourism. The tunnel will make travel easier, safer, and faster, allowing visitors to explore more destinations within a shorter period of time. This landmark project will benefit both tourists and tourism stakeholders, and we are grateful to the government for making this dream a reality,'' said Muhstaq Ahmad Raina, a tourist guide. Visitors are equally enthusiastic, noting that the tunnel will eliminate the need to cross the often-challenging Zojila Pass, reducing travel time and enhancing safety while cutting transportation costs. "Tourists always look for convenience and easy accessibility, and the opening of this tunnel will greatly reduce travel time between Kashmir and Ladakh. For instance there’s a plan for an alternate road (Sasoma–Sasser–DBO) to improve connectivity to key forward areas. The airstrip will also serve as a deterrent to further Chinese incursions.
