<p>Wangchuk and those accompanying him were detained at the Delhi border for violating prohibitory orders and were taken to different police stations, including Bawana, Narela Industrial Area and Alipur, according to a police officer.</p>

<p>"We tried to convince them to go back as Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) (which prohibits assembly of five or more people) is imposed in the national capital, but they were adamant," the officer said. They remain under detention, he said.</p>

<p>A representative of the group claimed that Wangchuk was taken to Bawana police station and was not being allowed to meet his lawyers.</p>

<p>The activist and others have launched an indefinite fast at the police stations where they have been kept, the representative said.</p>

<p>Wangchuk and the other members of the group had sought official permission and even emailed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah but that information was used to detain the protesters, the representative claimed.</p>

<p>Ladakh MP Mohmad Haneefa told&nbsp;<em>PTI</em>&nbsp;that around 30 women were among those detained and they were kept with the male detainees.</p>

<p>"Around 30 women were also detained.&nbsp;They were kept in a place where male detainees were also there," Haneefa said.</p>

<p>However, Delhi Police had said on Monday night that women protesters were not detained.</p>

<p>"Several people from Ladakh have been detained. They have been kept at different police stations. I met some of them late last night and early today," Haneefa said.</p>

<p>On being asked whether the two countries&nbsp;were close to a breakthrough to revive the bilateral ties frozen for over four years due to the military standoff in Eastern Ladakh, Foreign Ministry spokesperson&nbsp;Mao Ning told reporters on Friday that&nbsp;the two militaries realised disengagement in four areas and the situation along the border is stable.</p>

<p>“In recent years, front-line armies of the two countries have realised disengagement in four areas in the Western sector of the China-India border, including the Galwan Valley. The China-India border situation is generally stable and under control,” Mao added.</p>

<p>Mao's remarks came a day after Indian Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said&nbsp;that roughly 75% of the “disengagement problems” with China had been sorted out&nbsp;but the bigger issue was the increasing militarisation of the frontier.</p>

<p>The Indian and Chinese militaries have been locked in a standoff since May 2020 and a full resolution of the border row has not yet been achieved though the two sides have disengaged from many friction points.</p>

<p>"We did not have an easy relationship in the past. What happened in 2020 was in violation of multiple agreements, the Chinese moved a large number of troops to the Line of Actual Control. We, in response, moved our troops up.. Some progress on border talks with China. 75 per cent of disengagement problems are sorted out. We still have some things to do," Jaishankar said during his conversation with Ambassador Jean-David Levitte at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy.</p>

<p>"If there is a solution to disengagement and there is a return to peace and tranquillity, we can look at other possibilities. That is the immediate issue," he added.</p>

The Home Minister of India, Amit Shah, took to social media and said to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. <p class="MsoNormal">Five soldiers died after their tank met with an accident while they were crossing a river during an exercise near the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Leh's Daulat Beg Oldi area on Saturday (June 29) morning.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Rescue officials have recovered body of one soldier, while the four others are still missing.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">A Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) is among the five killed in the accident.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The soldiers were on a training mission and were crossing the Bodhi River near Mandir Morh, 148 kilometres from Leh, on their T-72 tank when suddenly the water levels began to rise, official sources said.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The tank and the soldiers were submerged in the swelling river, they added.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">A rescue operation has been launched.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Defence Minister Rajnath Singh led the nation in mourning the deaths.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal">"Deeply saddened at the loss of lives of five of our brave Indian Army soldiers in an unfortunate accident while getting the tank across a river in Ladakh. We will never forget the exemplary service of our gallant soldiers to the nation. My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families. The nation stands firm with them during this hour of grief," he posted on X.</p>

He took the lead with over two lac votes and left&nbsp;Omar Abdullah far behind.</p>

<p>Sheikh Abdul Rashid also known as Engineer Rashid has been a former MLA from the Langate assembly seat of North Kashmir's Kupwara district. Engineer won the assembly seat twice in a row and headed a party with the name&nbsp;Awami Ittehad Party. Engineer has been languishing in the Jail since 2019. He is booked by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a terror funding case and has been lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi. He is the first mainstream politician to be arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the time when Engineer was an elected MLA from the Langate assembly seat, he was&nbsp;considered a separatist sympathiser.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Omar Abdullah conceded his defeat on social media to Engineer on the day of election results after trailing by a huge margin.</p>

<p>''I think it’s time to accept the inevitable. Congratulations to Engineer Rashid for his victory in North Kashmir. I don’t believe his victory will hasten his release from prison nor will the people of North Kashmir get the representation they have a right to, but the voters have spoken and in a democracy that’s all that matters," he said on X.</p>

<p>Omar also took to social media today and shared a quote from a story that&nbsp;read, ''Rashid’s victory, without doubt, will empower secessionists, and give Kashmir’s defeated Islamist movement a renewed sense of hope. Efforts to draw secessionism back into electoral politics led New Delhi to support the rise of the People’s Democratic Party, and its alliance with the BJP. That, however, ended up empowering violent secessionists, not mainstreaming them—a warning of the unpredictable outcomes of trying to manipulate politics.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Although these were not Omar Abdullah's words, sharing them on social media today meant nothing but the endorsement of the same thoughts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another Surprise was Independent Candidate Haji Haneefa Jan, who won the Ladakh Parliamentary seat. Haji was associated with the National Conference earlier and was the district president of the same party in Ladakh. He decided to go solo in this parliamentary election as the INDIA alliance fielded Namgyal as their candidate. The Kargil Unit of the National Conference had resigned en masse after Namgyal was fielded as their candidate.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2023, Haneefa lost the Kargil Elections for the Barro Constituency in the LAHDC Kargil by a mere 66 votes. And after Omar Abdullah decided to field a different candidate from the Ladakh seat, Haji decided to quit and fight solo.</p>

<p>Earlier, we had also witnessed how Environmentalist and Educationist Sonam Wangchuk had demanded statehood for&nbsp;Ladakh for which he had done a 21-day long hunger strike and also asked to bring UT under the Sixth Schedule of article 244 of the Indian Constitution, facilitating the creation of autonomous district council to give ladakhis legislative, judicial and administrative powers. It is said that all these incidents together played a major role in Haji's win.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Omar Abdullah took to social media and congratulated his former member Haji for the victory. '' I’m really very happy for you today. A few months ago, you tasted defeat in the hill council elections &amp; now you will represent Ladakh, especially the marginalised people of Kargil in the Lok Sabha. Your victory cost @JKNC_ its Kargil unit but it was well worth the price," said the&nbsp;National Conference party chief.</p>

<h2><strong>Northern Lights in the UK: What happened?</strong></h2>

<p>Last weekend, aurora borealis, bands of pink and green light lit up the night sky. Rare sightings of Northern Lights made quite a splash across the UK, Europe and as far as Ladakh in India. This came after an "extreme" geomagnetic storm caused them to be more visible, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.</p>

<p>Krista Hammond, a space weather forecaster at the Met Office, told the British media that the phenomenon was likely to occur more frequently over the next few years – but not uniformly so.</p>

<p>"This is all down to what’s known as the sun’s solar cycle. The sun has a roughly 11-year cycle of activity, and this is from what’s known as solar minimum, which then goes towards solar maximum, and back to solar minimum. And we’re now approaching the solar maximum," she told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme.</p>

<p>The aurora borealis, typically seen in polar regions due to disturbances in the magnetosphere caused by solar wind, made a rare appearance in Indian skies. For the first time, the Indian Astronomical Observatory captured this phenomenon above Mount Saraswati in Ladakh's Hanle region.</p>

<p>This celestial display, also known as the Northern Lights, is uncommon at lower latitudes like Ladakh's 34-36°N. The auroral red arc appeared around 1 am&nbsp;on May 11 and is expected to persist over the weekend as more coronal mass ejections interact with Earth's outer atmosphere.</p>

<p>Despite Ladakh's mid-latitude location, it experienced a severe G4 geomagnetic storm, as classified by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center. A similar event occurred on April 22-23, 2023, attributed to a coronal mass ejection on April 21, which induced a G4 geomagnetic storm on Earth.</p>

<p>Explaining the phenomenon, Scientific Officer of Institute for Plasma Research Centre Dr Ravi A V Kumar said, as quoted by news agency&nbsp;<i>ANI</i>, "Solar flares are very common, it happens all the time...It happens when the sun gets to the peak of its activity of 11-year circle...After every 11 years, the activity of the sun goes from high to low and in 2025 the activity is going to be at its peak...The chance of solar flares coming out at this time are more...These are highly charged particles of plasma which can travel at very high velocities... The faster these particles move the more dangerous they are...Since these are charged particles from the sun they can get deflected from Earth's magnetic field..."</p>

<p>"Some of these deflected particles can come to polar regions of the earth which then interact with gas molecules in the upper atmosphere and they produce a colour called Aurora...When there is a very strong solar flare like the one which happened yesterday when combined with the Earth's atmosphere and magnetic field produces Auroras.&nbsp;People are very fortunate to even see this right upto Northern Italy...The Aurora could also be seen in Hanle Ladakh..." he added.</p>

Indian Army rescues 80 people stranded amid snowfall in Ladakh

<p>Activist Sonam Wangchuk has cancelled his planned border march on Sunday (Apr 7) after the Ladakh administration imposed restrictions under Section 144 and enforced internet curbs in the region. Wangchuk had intended to lead a march to the Line of Actual Control (LAC) at the Chungathung border area to demonstrate China's land encroachment since 2020.</p>

<p>Expressing concerns about potential clashes and riots, the activist, who advocates for Ladakh Union Territory's statehood and 6th Schedule status, cited apprehensions about the government's "overreaction."</p>

<p>"There may be attempts to upset this peaceful agitation and then blame it for violence and make it an excuse to disallow the peaceful protests in Ladakh," said Wangchuk.</p>

<p>He said the agitation in Ladakh has created awareness among people across the country, and the government fears that the border march may impact elections and their vote bank. "So they decided to stop me from marching to the border even at the cost of disturbing peace," he said.</p>

<p>Wangchuk called the government's control measures as "madness". "We are concerned about its impact on national security and peace in the region and, therefore, we have decided to withdraw the march," said Wangchuk.</p>

<p>Previously, Wangchuk stated that if the government intervenes to halt the march, it would strongly suggest that the government wants&nbsp;to conceal the extent of land acquisition by China in Ladakh.</p>

<p>"Our objective is already achieved, which was to make the country aware about what's happening in Ladakh and its pastures, what's happened with Indian land on the border," said Wangchuk.</p>

With the stormy Indian Parliament winter session ongoing, the country's Supreme Court is set to deliver its verdict on the validity of the scrapping of Article 370 of the Constitution. The Indian government on 5 August 2019 abrogated Article 370 of the Consitution and completed the reorganisation of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, namely Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.

<p>The source also said that India will continue to develop its infrastructure in the strategic areas despite harsh conditions.</p>

<p>During the 20th round of military talks last month, there was no significant progress on the ground. However, both parties agreed to sustain dialogue and negotiations through various military and diplomatic channels, while committing to uphold peace and tranquillity.&nbsp;</p>

India and China ramp up engagements to prevent escalation during brutal winters

Indian and Chinese ground commanders have been holding interactions to rule out any incident as troop deployments are re-adjusted for the harsh months ahead. This is the fourth winter since the start of the military standoff along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh.
