The Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday raided the premises of close associates&nbsp;of Hemant Soren in Ranchi, chief minister of the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. The raids were part of an ongoing&nbsp;alleged illegal mining case in Sahibganj.

According to news agency ANI, the federal agency carried out the raids on Soren's press advisor Abhishek Prasad alias Pintu,&nbsp;Sahibganj deputy commissioner Ram Niwas Yadav as well as an architect in connection with an illegal mining case.&nbsp;

The raids come a day after Soren refused to pay heed to the seventh summon issued by the ED, requesting&nbsp;him to join the investigation.

"Since you have not come to the office of the Directorate of Enforcement in obedience to the summonses issued to you, we are giving you this last opportunity to record your statement under section 50 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002, at the place, date and time, mutually convenient to you as well as the undersigned (ED), which should be within 7 days of receipt of this notice/Summons," read the seventh ED summon.&nbsp;

<h2>Soren to challenge ED's investigation&nbsp;</h2>

Soren has refused to comply with the authorities saying summons are 'illegal' and that he would challenge the entire investigation in a court of law.&nbsp;

"He has also accused ED of making the media trial of the whole matter. In his reply, he also said that he had already given the details of the properties. He has also accused ED of trying to destabilize the government," a source was quoted as saying by ANI.

Notably, Soren's press advisor has been previously questioned in the Sahibganj case over allegations that he owned mines there.&nbsp;

“Yes, I do own mines, but the consent to operate was given to me during (former CM) Raghubar Das’s time," he told The Indian Express newspaper earlier.&nbsp;

There have been speculations that&nbsp;Soren's party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha was planning&nbsp;to make his wife&nbsp;Kalpana Soren the chief minister in case ED makes some breakthrough in its investigation. However, Soren refuted the speculations, saying there was not an iota of truth to them.&nbsp;

The Income Tax Department has intensified its crackdown of the black money in Odisha and Jharkhand. The Income Tax officials revealed that they had seized cash worth millions of rupees from two lockers in what is now being called the first phase of the operation.

The cash seizure figure may go further up as counting is still on.

Boudh Distillery Private Limited in the Indian state of Odisha is the location&nbsp;from where the amount was discovered and&nbsp;the counting of notes is still underway, media reports said. As per reports the cash found was in such a huge quantity that some of the counting machines broke down. 
 
The raids also extended to Sahu's business premises in Jharkhand and West Bengal, including areas in Naxal-affected regions, prompting cautious procedures.&nbsp;

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also reacted to the ongoing raids and spoke of the commitment to recovering every penny.

“The countrymen should look at the pile of these notes and then listen to the honest 'speeches' of their leaders…Whatever has been looted from the public, every penny will have to be returned, this is Modi's guarantee," PM Modi said in a post on X social media platform by sharing a newspaper article on the raids.

The Jharkhand unit of the Congress has not been commenting much on the Income Tax raids and the large sums of money which was found by the authorities.

Congress spokesperson Neeraj Sinha reportedly defended Dheeraj Sahu and his business activities claiming that the business has a long history and is not a matter of sudden wealth accumulation like Adani group, the Indian multinational conglomerate that has been&nbsp;often criticised around alleged favouritism.&nbsp;

He also reportedly shared that the income tax department had not communicated any information to Sahu.&nbsp;

<h2>Bundles of cash stack in almirahs,</h2>

The Income Tax Department reported that over 30 officers are involved in the ongoing cash counting process, with videos of note bundles stacked in almirahs going viral. Around eight machines are being used to count the substantial amount of cash.

Additional locations under scrutiny include Sambalpur and Sundargarh in Odisha, as well as Bokaro and Ranchi in Jharkhand.

As the raids continues even after three days, the BJP seized the opportunity to target the Congress leadership, accusing them of amassing black money through corrupt practices.

Gaurav Bhatia, a leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), remarked, "The IT dept has seized more than ₹100 crore in cash from the residence of a Congress MP in Jharkhand. The Congress leaders are filling up their pockets with these black earnings made out of corruption."

$34.7mn cash seized in I-T raids on Cong MP’s properties; Modi vows ‘every penny will have to be returned’

As millions of Indians were glued to their TV sets to receive information about the rescue of 41 workers trapped inside the collapsed Silkyara tunnel for over 400 hours, 70-year-old Barsa Murmu from Jharkhand was praying for his son, who was among the workers, to return safely.

On D-day, that is Tuesday (Nov 28), when workers were being pulled out one by one amidst cheers and chants, an anxious Barsa Murmu passed away hours before his son, Bhaktu (28), was rescued.

What is even more tragic is that Barsa couldn’t even hear the news of his son coming out of the tunnel in Uttarakhand.

His family members told PTI news agency on Wednesday (Nov 29) that Murmu, a resident of Bahda village in East Singhbhum district, died around 8 am (local time) on Tuesday while sitting on his cot, around 12 hours before Baktu was rescued.

<h2>Officials suspect heart attack&nbsp;</h2>

Though the reasons for his sudden death are yet to be confirmed, local government officials suspect that Barsa died of a heart attack.

Murmu's son-in-law Thakar Hansda, who was with the 70-year-old in his dying moments, said that he was anxious about the well-being of his son and suddenly fell from the cot and died.

The relatives said that Barsa anxiously kept waiting for information regarding his son's rescue.

Dumaria police station’s in-charge Sanjeevan Oraon told PTI that the reasons behind the death are not known.

Civil Surgeon, East Singhbhum, Dr Jujhar Manjhi said they had information of the death but no medical report has reached them as yet.

<h2>Jharkhand labourers under medical observation&nbsp;</h2>

Bhaktu, along with 14 others from Jharkhand, is recuperating at AIIMS Rishikesh where he was taken for the health check-up around 2 pm on Wednesday.

It hence becomes a happy news when a father decides to bring his daughter home with a celebratory procession, a daughter who wanted to come out of her marriage.

The 'separation baraat' (procession) in Indian state of Jharkhand is being talked about on social media. Sakshi Gupta, daughter of Prem Gupta got married to an engineer in April 2022. She soon learnt that the man was already married. After trying to sort out the situation for months, she confided her predicament to her father, who stood behind his daughter and fully supported her decision to end her marriage.

His steadfast support did not end there. As his daughter left her in-laws' home, Prem Gupta arranged for a celebratory procession with fireworks to mark return of his daughter who told him that she felt as if she was leaving a jail. The baraat was complete with drums being played and firecrackers being burst, just like a marriage procession.

The video of the procession, originally posted by Prem Gupta is being widely shared on social media.

India: Man arranges celebratory procession, fireworks for daughter after her marriage failed

A 26-year-old man who was going through unbearable toothache died after watching YouTube videos that supposedly recommended a quick fix.

The incident took place in India’s eastern Jharkhand state on Saturday. Times Of India news outlet reported that Ajay Mahto died after allegedly consuming too many Kaner (oleander) seeds, that were recommended in a few YouTube videos.

According to the report, Mahto’s health started deteriorating after consuming oleander seeds, following which he was rushed to a nearby community health centre in Hazaribag.

But the doctors couldn’t do anything as he was declared dead on arrival.

There is no known medical record that says oleander seeds can cure toothache. In fact, health experts have noted that ingestion of oleander seeds or leaves is a common cause of accidental poisoning worldwide.

Father of the deceased Nunuchand Mahto said that his son was staying at a lodge in the Nutan Nagar colony and was preparing for competitive exams. He experienced intense toothache a week ago.

After watching a plethora of YouTube videos, Ajay believed that only oleander seeds can help him&nbsp;relieve his pain, Nunuchand said.

His father rued over the fact that Ajay, instead of consulting a doctor, relied on YouTube videos to relieve his tooth pain.

The video of the incident had gone viral that purportedly showed a mob forcing Ansari to chant gods' names— 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Jai Hanuman' —in the Saraikela Kharsawan district of Jharkhand.

He died five days later. His family claimed that the police denied him treatment despite his injuries.

The verdict was pronounced on June 27 by Additional District Judge Amit Shekhar ruling the 10 men "guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder", PTI news agency reported.

The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 15,000 ($182 approx.) on each of them.

<h2>Prime accused was already in jail</h2>

The prime accused, Prakash Mandal alias Pappu Mandal, was already in jail, while the others were taken into custody after they were convicted by the court last week.

One of the accused Kushal Mahali died in the course of the trial.

The convicted persons - Bhim Singh Munda, Kamal Mahato, Madan Nayak, Atul Mahali, Sunamo Pradhan, Vikram Mandal, Chamu Nayak, Prem Chand Mahali, Mahesh Mahali – were taken into custody soon after they were convicted by the court.

The incident in the state, which was ruled by the BJP at that time, sparked a national political furore. The opposition parties had even raised the issue in the parliament and disrupted the proceedings for a few days.

Even the police were slammed for not invoking stringent murder charges against the accused. They relented after immense pressure and added murder charges in a supplementary charge sheet.

On June 25, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who was the Member of Parliament at that time, termed the lynching a "blot on humanity" and said the "silence" of powerful voices in the BJP-ruled central and state governments over the incident is shocking.

The following day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Rajya Sabha (upper house) said that he was “pained” by the lynching and the guilty must be severely punished.

Ansari was working as a labourer in Pune. He had come home to celebrate Eid. On the night of the incident, locals at Dhatkidih village caught him over suspicion of trying to steal a motorcycle. He was tied to a pole and beaten up with sticks through the night.

“My parents and other family members tried to pacify them by offering chicken and fish instead, but they were adamant on their demand for mutton and started misbehaving with us,” the bride said.

"My father even bowed down and pleaded before them, but they remained unmoved. It seemed wrong to me and I told them to leave the place without marriage,” she added.

As per eyewitnesses quoted by the media, local villagers were engaged in illegal coal mining at the site when the mine caved in. "With the help of the locals, three persons were brought out from the debris and taken to a hospital where doctors declared them dead," an eyewitness said.&nbsp;

A report by India Today claims hundreds of people were present inside the mine when its roof collapsed, triggering concerns that the death toll might increase. The illegal mining was being done at ATDev Prabha Outsourcing company. When the roof collapsed, the panic-stricken workers tried to vacate the site in a rush, leading to a fatal stampede. A total of five people sustained injuries, and they were taken to a nearby hospital by the authorities.

Illegal mining activities have been widespread in open and abandoned coal mines in Jharkhand. In March, there were reports of two incidents of mines caving-in in Hazaribagh.

The first incident occurred at the West Modidih colliery of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, located within the jurisdiction of the Tetulmari police station in Dhanbad. During illegal mining, the mine wall collapsed, resulting in the death of four individuals and injuries to several others.

Video: Illegal coal mine collapses in India's Jharkhand, at least 3 people killed, several feared trapped

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Dinesh Gope, the self-styled supremo of the proscribed People’s Liberation Front of India (PLFI), an agency spokesperson said on Sunday. The PLFI, which mainly operates in Jharkhand, is a splinter group of the Maoists.

Gope alias “Kuldeep Yadav” alias “Badku”, who had more than 100 criminal cases against him and was carrying a reward of Rs 30 lakh on information leading to his arrest, was held in Delhi, the official said. 
Gope, a resident of Khunti district in Jharkhand, was charge-sheeted by the NIA in a 2018 case related to the recovery of demonetised currency notes worth Rs 25.38 lakh from PLFI operatives, the spokesperson said.

He had been absconding for almost two decades. The NIA Ranchi branch is investigating three cases against the PLFI, which was previously known as the Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT), the official said.

According to the NIA, the PLFI is responsible for hundreds of terror incidents in Jharkhand.

“More than 102 criminal cases are registered against Gope in Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha. Most of these cases relate to murder, abduction, threat, extortion, and raising funds for the PLFI, a militant Maoist outfit formed in 2007 in Jharkhand and a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist),” the spokesperson said.

The official said the NIA had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh for leads on Gope, in addition to the reward of Rs 25 lakh announced by the Jharkhand government.

On February 3 last year, an encounter had taken place between a Gope-led PLFI squad and security personnel in a forested area under Gudri Police station of West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand.

Several rounds were fired in the encounter before the rebels sneaked into the forest and Gope managed to escape, the official said, adding he had been taking shelter at different places while making all efforts to re-establish the PLFI’s stronghold in Jharkhand.

“Gope used to extort money and execute attacks through his PLFI team members to terrorise businessmen, contractors and the public at large,” the spokesperson said.

The official said the accused, along with his associates, was involved in depositing the demonetised currency notes in a bank account and later collected them through extortion.

“The illegal money was then invested through banking channels and dubious shell companies in the name of close associates and family members of Gope,” the official said.

The NIA said the case was initially registered on November 10, 2016 at Bero Police Station in Ranchi and re-registered by the NIA on January 19, 2018.

Currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 were withdrawn from circulation in 2016.

“The police had filed the first charge sheet against four persons on January 9, 2017. NIA filed the first supplementary charge sheet in the case against 11 accused, including Gope. Subsequently, NIA filed the second supplementary charge sheet in the case on July 23 last year against five individuals and three private limited companies,” the spokesperson said.

The official said the NIA had also attached 14 bank accounts and two cars, along with cash and immovable property worth more than Rs 1 crore, in the case.

“The outfit used to lure unemployed youths by providing them motor bikes, mobile phones and easy money and after imparting training, used to equip them with lethal weapons to carry out terror incidents,” the spokesperson said.

The NIA said extortion is PLFI’s major source of income and the outfit has been targeting coal traders, railway contractors and various private entities involved in developmental projects in various districts of Jharkhand.

The Naxal outfit had also formed alliances with different criminal gangs in order to spread their nefarious activities and executed murders and arson in Jharkhand, the official said.

“Gope was part of a criminal conspiracy to channelize the extorted funds collected from the contractors/businessmen engaged in the developmental projects in Jharkhand. He was involved in investing these funds in dubious shell companies like M/S Palak Enterprises, M/s Shiv Adi Shakti, M/s Shiv Shakti Samridhi Infra Pvt. Ltd., M/s Bhavya Engicon, formed in partnership with other PLFI associates and his family members.

“The extorted money was also being transferred from Jharkhand to other places through a network of hawala operators,” the spokesperson said.

In July 2007, Masi Charan Purty, a renegade of the CPI-Maoist, along with several of his followers, had joined Gope in order to raise PLFI as a Naxal outfit, the official said.

Though Purty was subsequently arrested, the PLFI spread its activities under Gope’s command, the NIA said, adding the outfit used to extorted money to procure sophisticated weapons, including AK 47s and foreign-made rifles such as HK 33.&nbsp;

Gope, a resident of Khunti district in Jharkhand, was charge-sheeted by the NIA in a 2018 case related to the recovery of demonetised currency notes worth Rs 25.38 lakh from PLFI operatives, the spokesperson said. The NIA Ranchi branch is investigating three cases against the PLFI, which was previously known as the Jharkhand Liberation Tigers (JLT), the official said. According to the NIA, the PLFI is responsible for hundreds of terror incidents in Jharkhand. “More than 102 criminal cases are registered against Gope in Jharkhand, Bihar and Odisha. Most of these cases relate to murder, abduction, threat, extortion, and raising funds for the PLFI, a militant Maoist outfit formed in 2007 in Jharkhand and a splinter group of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist),” the spokesperson said. The official said the NIA had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh for leads on Gope, in addition to the reward of Rs 25 lakh announced by the Jharkhand government. Several rounds were fired in the encounter before the rebels sneaked into the forest and Gope managed to escape, the official said, adding he had been taking shelter at different places while making all efforts to re-establish the PLFI’s stronghold in Jharkhand. “Gope used to extort money and execute attacks through his PLFI team members to terrorise businessmen, contractors and the public at large,” the spokesperson said. The official said the accused, along with his associates, was involved in depositing the demonetised currency notes in a bank account and later collected them through extortion. “The illegal money was then invested through banking channels and dubious shell companies in the name of close associates and family members of Gope,” the official said. The NIA said the case was initially registered on November 10, 2016 at Bero Police Station in Ranchi and re-registered by the NIA on January 19, 2018. NIA filed the first supplementary charge sheet in the case against 11 accused, including Gope. Subsequently, NIA filed the second supplementary charge sheet in the case on July 23 last year against five individuals and three private limited companies,” the spokesperson said. The official said the NIA had also attached 14 bank accounts and two cars, along with cash and immovable property worth more than Rs 1 crore, in the case. “The outfit used to lure unemployed youths by providing them motor bikes, mobile phones and easy money and after imparting training, used to equip them with lethal weapons to carry out terror incidents,” the spokesperson said. The NIA said extortion is PLFI’s major source of income and the outfit has been targeting coal traders, railway contractors and various private entities involved in developmental projects in various districts of Jharkhand. The Naxal outfit had also formed alliances with different criminal gangs in order to spread their nefarious activities and executed murders and arson in Jharkhand, the official said. “Gope was part of a criminal conspiracy to channelize the extorted funds collected from the contractors/businessmen engaged in the developmental projects in Jharkhand. He was involved in investing these funds in dubious shell companies like M/S Palak Enterprises, M/s Shiv Adi Shakti, M/s Shiv Shakti Samridhi Infra Pvt. Ltd., M/s Bhavya Engicon, formed in partnership with other PLFI associates and his family members. “The extorted money was also being transferred from Jharkhand to other places through a network of hawala operators,” the spokesperson said. In July 2007, Masi Charan Purty, a renegade of the CPI-Maoist, along with several of his followers, had joined Gope in order to raise PLFI as a Naxal outfit, the official said. Though Purty was subsequently arrested, the PLFI spread its activities under Gope’s command, the NIA said, adding the outfit used to extorted money to procure sophisticated weapons, including AK 47s and foreign-made rifles such as HK 33. The Jamtara fraudsters often use tactics such as social engineering, where they build rapport with the victim and convince them to trust them. In recent years, the Jamtara-styled fraudsters have become operational in other parts of India as well. It has been a major concern for law enforcement agencies in India, and there have been several efforts to crack down on these scammers and dismantle their operations.

In the latest, the Delhi Police arrested six people from Jamtara for conning over 2,500 individuals in India of Rs 1 crore via customer care centres. The accused people would publish their cellphone numbers as customer service numbers for the majority of the banks. People looking for customer service information for banks or online retailers would often then come across the provided fake numbers and become a victim of cyber fraud.&nbsp;

According to police, the accused reportedly employed mirroring software to gain access to the victims' registered cell phones in order to steal money.

The suspects impersonated customer service personnel for many reputable banks and online retailers. Authorities claimed to have found 12,500 pre-activated SIM cards that had been given to scammers in Jamtara from West Bengal's Murshidabad city for over a year.

According to DCP (Outer North) Ravi Kumar Singh, the issue came to light when a complainant from Dubai travelled to Delhi to see his daughter. He used Google to look for the customer service number to update his daughter's bank passbook.&nbsp;

“His location was shared with the accused and the net banking page was opened. The accused forwarded the call to a person posing as a senior executive and remotely got access to the mobile phone and made two transactions of Rs 9,50,000 and Rs 50,000 from the account. A case of cheating was lodged and investigation was taken up," reported Indian Express quoting DCP Singh.&nbsp;

“It was found that the accused used the call forwarding method and kept changing Google web page customer phone numbers to hide their locations. The phone numbers and IMEI were analysed and it has been noticed that these persons were carrying out cyber fraud in an organised and professional manner on a pan India basis,” the DCP added.

On April 11, a raid was carried out in the Jamtara village of Nawadih as part of the ongoing investigation into the case. Six persons were detained, and 25 mobile phones with fraudulent SIM cards and incriminating data were recovered.

“During the call, the accused would pose as a customer care official. They would get a sharing or mirroring application installed in the victim’s device with the prefix coinciding with the bank name such as SBI ANYDESK, and once they got the application installed, they would siphon off the money,” he said. “A fraudster would keep three to four smart mobile phones and choose a remote place in Nawadih village…where police access is difficult,” added the DCP.

According to reports, if adequate action was not done, the majority of the community would take to the streets in protest.

To avoid any negative effects from the incident, district officials have restricted people's freedom of movement.

Soon after the incident came to light, people were seen protesting in the streets of Dumka.&nbsp;

Speaking to ANI, Dumka Superintendent of police (SP) Ambar Lakda said, "The accused Shahrukh has been arrested. We will apply at fast track court for a fast trial. People are cooperating with us. We appeal to people to maintain peace. The situation is under control and Section 144 has been imposed."

Reacting to the matter, Jharkhand Health Minister Banna Gupta said stringent action will be taken against perpetrators ensuring a fast trial.&nbsp;

"The state government is serious regarding the murder of a girl in Dumka. Stringent action will be taken against perpetrators. We will ensure a fast trial. We have talked to DC in this regard," Gupta said.

The rescue operations have ended after a fatal accident at the Trikut Ropeway service in Jharkhand's Deoghar in India took place on Sunday, authorities said.&nbsp;

The cars collided when one of them became partly dislodged from its cable. None of the cars fell to the ground but both became immobilised.&nbsp;

Reports have stated that the accident occurred due to the breaking of the sap of the ropeway operated on the mountain.&nbsp;

All the tourists trapped in cable cars have been rescued, while one more person fell off a helicopter when she was being winched up. The death toll in the incident is reported to be three.&nbsp;

"Three people have died in the mishap, including two tourists who fell from helicopters on Monday and Tuesday during rescue attempts, while 12 injured people are undergoing treatment at hospitals," officials said as quoted by news agencies.&nbsp;

Additional Director General of Police RK Mallick told India-based news agency PTI, "Of the remaining 15 people trapped in cable cars, 14 have been rescued while a woman fell off the chopper during the course of rescue operation."&nbsp;

The woman has been identified as 60-year-old Shobha Devi, who was apparently declared dead on being taken to a hospital.&nbsp;

The rescue operations were undertaken jointly by the Indian Air Force (IAF), Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the district personnel.&nbsp;

The aerial tramway takes pilgrims to the top of a hill called Trikut, which Hindus consider holy.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Jharkhand High Court on Tuesday took suo motu cognizance of the mishap and ordered an inquiry into the matter. The court will hear the matter on April 26. The state has to file a detailed inquiry report through an affidavit.&nbsp;

The ruling YSR Congress bagged All the four Rajya Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh in the biennial election held on Friday as expected.

According to Legislature sources, Deputy Chief Minister Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose, Minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana, industrialist Parimal Nathwani and realtor Ayodhya Rami Reddy of the YSRC were elected with 38 votes each.

The opposition Telugu Desam Party, which had forced the contest despite not having the numbers, lost badly, with its nominee Varla Ramaiah polling only 17 votes against its technical strength of 23 in the assembly.

In Jharkhand, JMM supremo Shibu Soren and BJP state unit president Deepak Prakash won.

Prakash secured 31 votes, while Soren, a former chief minister, won 30.

Congress candidate Shahzada Anwar finished third by bagging 18 votes, the official said. 
This will be Soren's third term as a Rajya Sabha member. Soren, whose Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) now governs Jharkhand, had also served as a Union minister.

It will be Prakash's maiden term in the Upper House of Parliament.

Polling in the two seats was held during the day as the tenure of Independent member Parimal Nathwani and RJD's Prem Chand Gupta ended in April.

Ruling YSRC bags all four Rajya Sabha seats in Andhra; JMM, BJP win in Jharkhand

From noted&nbsp;playwright Girish Karnad and rationalist, K S Bhagawan to Gauri Lankesh and others, the gang had also prepared a list of the people whom they wanted to kill.&nbsp;

Sanatan Sanstha&nbsp;was also accused of&nbsp;killing of the&nbsp;rationalist MM Kalburgi.

Gauri Lankesh Murder Case: SIT arrests absconding accused Rushikesh Devdikar

When I travelled across Jharkhand- my home state in 2017 - public opinion was still in the BJP's favour. Saffron flags could be seen outside houses in a tribal village on the outskirts of Ranchi. People said that BJP volunteers met them and that they are hopeful that the government will bring development. The changes that central schemes like Ujjwala Yojana brought were visible as many houses got gas connections. Many of them built toilets from the funds allotted by the government.

Yet, the BJP's defeat was in the offing months ahead of the state elections. Polling in Jharkhand was underway when the Citizenship Amendment Act&nbsp;was passed by Parliament but national politics had little impact on the state elections which was fought on regional issues.

Raghubar Das who not only became the state’s first non-tribal chief minister, but also the first to complete a full five-year term was an unknown figure when he took over the post.

His compatriot and former CM Arjun Munda remained much popular. Munda was also a formidable tribal leader in the state.

But Das’ rift with Munda was an open secret and this meant that the latter was mostly not involved in campaigning.

It didn’t help much for an already unpopular CM to sideline well-known veterans and give tickets to Congress turncoats. Anti-corruption crusader Saryu Rai who spoke against tainted ministers in Das’ cabinet was denied a ticket.

Rai later defeated Das as an independent from Jamshedpur East.

The BJP hardly won any seat in the tribal belt while Hemant Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) swept the region. Tribal discontent against the government was growing. One of the major concerns was proposed amendments to two land laws- the Chotanagpur Tenancy and the Santhal Parganas Act.

The amendments which did not materialise sought to lift restrictions on the sale of tribals' land to industries. The opposition dubbed the government as 'anti-tribal' and a lack of communication with the people made the situation worse for the BJP.

While Das addressed rallies in Hindi, his rival Hemant Soren - a tribal leader - spoke in regional languages.

The lack of a prominent tribal face was made worse by the saffron party’s fallout with its ally All Jharkhand Student’s Union (AJSU) which was popular among the tribals as well as the OBCs.

The BJP eventually fought the elections alone in a state where no party has been able to secure a majority on its own.

Policy failures too served a blow to the BJP government. The global investors’ summit ‘Momentum Jharkhand’ gained a lot of traction but failed on the ground. The event failed to create jobs and attract investments as the state lacked enough infrastructure to support the establishment of new industries. And once again, the government failed to assuage tribal anger on the issue of land. This as new industrial projects meant acquisition of land in tribal areas.

Polling in Jharkhand was underway when the Citizenship Amendment Act was passed by Parliament but national politics had little impact on the state elections which was fought on regional issues. Raghubar Das who not only became the state’s first non-tribal chief minister, but also the first to complete a full five-year term was an unknown figure when he took over the post. His compatriot and former CM Arjun Munda remained much popular. Munda was also a formidable tribal leader in the state. But Das’ rift with Munda was an open secret and this meant that the latter was mostly not involved in campaigning. It didn’t help much for an already unpopular CM to sideline well-known veterans and give tickets to Congress turncoats. Anti-corruption crusader Saryu Rai who spoke against tainted ministers in Das’ cabinet was denied a ticket. Rai later defeated Das as an independent from Jamshedpur East. The BJP hardly won any seat in the tribal belt while Hemant Soren's Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) swept the region. Tribal discontent against the government was growing. One of the major concerns was proposed amendments to two land laws- the Chotanagpur Tenancy and the Santhal Parganas Act. The amendments which did not materialise sought to lift restrictions on the sale of tribals' land to industries. The opposition dubbed the government as 'anti-tribal' and a lack of communication with the people made the situation worse for the BJP. While Das addressed rallies in Hindi, his rival Hemant Soren - a tribal leader - spoke in regional languages. The lack of a prominent tribal face was made worse by the saffron party’s fallout with its ally All Jharkhand Student’s Union (AJSU) which was popular among the tribals as well as the OBCs. The BJP eventually fought the elections alone in a state where no party has been able to secure a majority on its own. Policy failures too served a blow to the BJP government. The global investors’ summit ‘Momentum Jharkhand’ gained a lot of traction but failed on the ground. The event failed to create jobs and attract investments as the state lacked enough infrastructure to support the establishment of new industries. And once again, the government failed to assuage tribal anger on the issue of land. This as new industrial projects meant acquisition of land in tribal areas. The three parties are together leading in 46 seats in the 81-member assembly.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das was trailing from his traditional Jamshedpur East seat behind party rebel Saryu Rai by over 7500 votes.

Jharkhand Vikas Morcha (Prajatantrik) and AJSU were leading on three seats each, Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) (Liberation) and NCP were ahead on one seat each and independents on two.

The state had a five-phased assembly election which concluded on December 20.

Congress leaders expressed confidence that the pre-poll alliance of the party will come to power.
