<p>Prime Minister Fumio Kishida instructed search and rescue teams to prioritise saving lives, despite the challenging access to affected areas. The earthquake, situated in an area with simmering seismic activity, raises concerns about potential aftershocks.</p>

<p>President Joe Biden extended US&nbsp;support to Japan following the devastating earthquake.</p>

<p>"As close allies, the United States and&nbsp;Japan&nbsp;share a deep bond of friendship that unites our people," Biden said in a statement.</p>

<p>"My administration is in touch with Japanese officials, and the United States stands ready to provide any necessary assistance for the Japanese people," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Japan Meteorological Agency issued tsunami warnings for Ishikawa, Niigata, and Toyama prefectures. Although initially a major tsunami warning for Ishikawa was issued, it was later downgraded.</p>

<p>Prime Minister Kishida urged residents in potential tsunami areas to evacuate promptly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I urge people in areas where tsunamis are expected to evacuate as soon as possible," Kishida said.</p>

<p>The earthquake led the US Tsunami Warning System to initially issue a tsunami warning for some parts of the Philippine coast. However, the alert was later withdrawn.</p>

<p>“Based on all available data, … the tsunami threat from this earthquake has now passed,” it said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, a separate tsunami alert was issued for Japan, with the country's&nbsp;meteorological agency saying the waves could reach a metre (3 feet) in height.</p>

<p>On Sunday, high waves were also expected to hit parts of Indonesia, Palau and Malaysia.</p>

<h2><strong>500 aftershocks in the Philippines</strong></h2>

<p>As per media reports, the Saturday quake claimed one life in the Philippines, while some residents reported damages to buildings in the Mindanao region, which is less populated than some parts of the archipelago.</p>

<p>More than 500 aftershocks were recorded, and the Philippines&nbsp;Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) urged caution as people resumed normal activities.</p>

<p>According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, 280 kilometres (170 miles) south of Tokyo, Hachijojima island was hit by tsunami waves of height 60 centimetres (24 inches). Smaller tsunami waves of 40cm and 20 cm were recorded in the western Kochi prefecture and southern Miyazaki prefecture, respectively.</p>

<p>Seismologists from JMA, as per an AFP report, said there were no immediate reports of damage from the minor waves generated.</p>

<p>However, despite that, Tateyama city of Chiba, located near Tokyo, had urged residents in coastal areas to evacuate after the advisory.</p>

<p>During a press conference, JMA official Toshihiro Shimoyama warned that "it is dangerous in the sea and near the coast".</p>

<p>Now, on February 13 of this year, another earthquake hit Japan — a little before the 10th anniversary of the disaster — which was described as an aftershock of the March 2011 disaster.</p>

<p>When Sakano went to check if any damages had occurred in the main hall, he heard the clock ticking.</p>

<p>The 58-year-old feels this is a sign of never giving up. "Maybe it's pushing me to move forward with new determination," Sakano told local media. “It’s like a sign of encouragement that the real restoration is yet to come."</p>

<p>The clock's manufacturer, however, feels it might have started again due to multiple reasons. "It's possible that the pendulum, which had stopped, started moving again with the shaking of the earthquake, or that dust that had built up inside came loose," a representative of Seiko told local media.</p>
